President’s Message
How quickly a year can pass in our life. I feel
practical at more formal meetings. I love the coffee chat and especially the camaraderie discussion, particularly since we were all experiencing a global shutdown due to the pandemic. The timing of this event could not have been more perfect and the coffee chat became a comfort relief for all of us participating in it. I look forward to seeing how this event will evolve into something even bigger. And no, it is not going to evolve into a “Weekend at Bernie’s”. That is an inside joke for those of us that have participated in the chat session.
as though I was inaugurated as President of the AIBD just a few days ago. Time flies when you are having fun or as Alexander Pope quoted “swift fly the years”. shared with me, “My website traffic reports reveal the most visited pages are those with content that is a direct result of my AIBD membership.” Many of those pages are ones announcing his ARDAwinning projects.

ARDA Chair’s Message ARDA,
the American Residential Design Awards is a program that judges each project on its own merit. Three judges are given the task of determining which projects deserve an ARDA, and for the truly outstanding entries, a Grand ARDA. I am excited to continue as chairman of this program. Residential Design is more than putting lines on paper. It is a true passion. You can see that passion in the entries of this year’s program. We have submissions from all types of projects, from the simple easy living to the extravagant dream homes. The best thing about the AIBD ARDA is that all submissions have the same chance of winning an award, regardless of its type and size. As in past years, the judges had the challenging task of reviewing each entry on its own merits as it pertained to the criteria of the category. And it definitely was a challenge. We had a 14 year high of entries. And this year seemed to take a record number of hours to complete the judging.
I would like to thank this year’s judges for their time and effort. As in past years, I have learned a few things from them in the process. Thank you Marina Bourderonnet, David Bruce Lee, and Jeff Ecleberry, for your time and talent. I would also like to give a special thanks to the AIBD staff, Steve Mickley, and Garrett Mickley, for helping to keep the program running smoothly. If you are considering submitting your projects to the 2022 ARDA, check out the categories and past winners at: www.ResidentialDesignAwards.com And don’t forget the Building Design Awards program for commercial and multifamily entries at: www.aibd.org/building-design-awards

want to take this opportunity to provide an update on the progress in our moving toward accreditation of the AIBD building designer certification program.
certified does not help you in your career, you may be correct. But I ask, how does this example affect the up-and-coming new talent? Most likely, they will need to be certified.
As of July 6, our application is in the hands of ANAB, which is the accreditation board for ANSI. The application Is in review, and God willing, we will know very soon if the last nine years of hard work are finally recognized.
Certification provides a level of commitment that I believe will be required for building departments and the code council to take us more seriously, not only now but in the future. project was designed to provide the most state of the art and luxurious environment for a dog training and boarding facility. The raw site was purchased with a master plan in mind. In addition to the facility structure, two ponds are being built on sight for aiding in the training of retrieving birds, as well as providing habitat to native wildlife. The facility includes and on-site dog spa and grooming center as well as in house vet clinic. For the owners, there is a private luxury residence. This provides 24 hour access to all boarding canines as well as the ability to enjoy the natural setting giving this facility a very “homey” feel. The dogs can also board in luxury with a number of suites
being outfitted with individual air conditioned suites, closed circuit cameras for security as well as individual tv’s for their entertainment. Lakeside Cove
GOLD WINNER
DESIGNED BY DvL Custom Concepts PHOTOS BY 9001 Productions
This luxury gated community forms part of a larger development
situated around a lake which includes a golf course, clubhouse, resort, and conference center. It consists of Mediterranean-style villas architecturally inspired by cities along the eastern coast of Spain. Three-story attached villa homes overlook the lake and golf course. The villas are ideally suited for empty-nesters, business professionals, and families who love to entertain and who enjoy the outdoors. It has unparalleled access to 5-star dining amenities, retail, and the town’s center.
The primary design objective for the development was to create an authentic Mediterranean-style community that took full advantage of the surrounding lake views. The lot configurations and home placements are designed to best capture the views of the lake. Rear alleys serving homesites facing the water and three-story designs provide expansive lakeside vistas. A particular constraint for this project was to create enough density to make this investment financially viable while giving homeowners a sense of spaciousness.

Marina Bourderonnet is a Registered Architect in New York and a LEED Green Associate. She was trained in sculpture, painting, and art history at the Ecole Des Beaux-Arts; studied Italian, Latin, Spanish, and English; graduated from the French National School of Architecture in Paris, and studied design at one of America’s leading architecture universities. Marina’s primary focus is consultant relationships, interior design, and construction administration. In her work, she loves solving problems and making sure things get done. Marina is highly opinionated and loves to joke! Marina is from a small town in the countryside of France. Surrounded by picturesque landscapes with Paris nearby, the town had an innate respect for history which Marina both adored and desired to rebel against. This urge for something new likely started at the age of six, when she watched her father tear down and rebuild the family home—a shocking and captivating process. How could a destructive act produce something so complete and loved? From the outside, the completed home would be a quaint structure nestled in a garden with a small pond. Inside, however, it expelled a striking variety of bold colors and an array of eclectic collectibles (a palette expressive of her mother’s addiction to bright pastries). The intense duality of the house both intrigues and annoys Marina to this day.

He graduated from one of the highest-ranked Architecture schools in the United States, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo; studied music and architecture in the Fontainebleau Chateau, France; earned a Master of Urban Design Degree in New York City; and has performed as a trumpet player in the Los Angeles Walt Disney Concert Hall. David’s primary focus is client relationships and conceptual and exterior envelope design. In his work, he is thoughtful and seeks perfection. David loves talking a lot and looking good! David is from one of the most impressively ordinary suburban cities in Southern California. However, the particular house and cul-de-sac David grew up in were far from boring to him. His family’s ranch-style home was more ‘architectural playground’ than ‘house’ with his father’s many ambitious remodels. For David, this perpetually incomplete structure, its long driveway, and quiet street were the boundaries of a blank canvas—a space for creative expression. With an ironic garage-full of home-building tools, music-making, and imagination, David’s ordinary suburban life was made exhilarating. To the dismay of his mother, the home is still undergoing several remodels to this day and is likely less complete than it was 30 years ago.

Riverglass (Best In Show) GRAND ARDA WINNER - Custom Homes (Built) DESIGNED BY Mathison | Mathison Architects PHOTOS BY Jason Keen
Located
at a wide bend in the river, with dramatic wooded westward views across the water, Riverglass is a four-level private home for a young, active family. The project was inspired by the water’s reflective quality and conceived with a warm modern aesthetic, employing horizontal roof lines with long, narrow clerestory windows, western red cedar cladding and simple concrete panels to comfortably nestle the home among its shorter suburban neighbors. Programmatically, the house includes two primary zones: a private area for the family, and a more public area for entertaining, fundraising, performances, and guest quarters. A three-story interior courtyard divides the two and provides a powerful organizing element and connector that emphasizes a dynamic spatial sequence and a backdrop for extraordinary views and light. Glass railings, wood screen walls, and a twosided fireplace carefully articulate the edges of the courtyard, while glass bridges interlace

upper living areas and create a sculptural effect within the three-story space. At the main entry, views through the space visually connect directly to an outdoor courtyard and to the river beyond. The public area includes a transparent social space extending beyond the west edge of the house to reveal an expansive 200-degree river vista. Special lighting and sound systems easily accommodate fundraisers, artists and speakers. The playful, undulating ceiling detail of the adjacent, intimate speakeasy is a counterpoint to the social space formality. During entertainment events, the private side of the house can be separated for privacy and quiet. The private side of the main level includes kitchen, dining, and family room with fireplace, as well as access to garage and storage. The second level is reserved for children’s bedrooms, study spaces, and an activity area, each with dramatic views of the river and natural light
passing through each space. The uppermost levels contain the master suite, as well as personal offices, spa/exercise room, outdoor sauna, and outdoor roof deck. All spaces are naturally-lit with river views as a priority. The lowest level, below-grade, contains a family theater, music room, play area, arts and crafts / maker space, storage spaces, and mechanical spaces. This high performance project includes a double-layer, super-insulated building envelope with triple-pane windows and doors, radiant floors throughout, and passive heating and cooling with integrated shading controls. The home includes Zehnder energy recovery ventilators and is solar ready for a future date.
Adjacent to the kitchen, the covered outdoor dining and relaxation deck is a favorite family place. With matching floor heights, the spaces flow naturally together. Beyond the deck, and one step down is the pool patio, including landscaping surrounding the pool. The pool level is an additional 18 inches lower, with the goal to screen the pool from view from the interior of the house in the off-seasons. Beyond the pool, the landscape slopes down to a flat area adjacent to the waterfront and dock. The terracing site accommodates multiple activities while maintaining a full view of the river.

GRAND ARDA WINNER - Custom Homes (Built)
DESIGNED BY TR Design Group PHOTOS BY Werner Straube Photography
The home was built for a married couple and their two young
children. The couple presented drastically different views right from the start regarding what they envisioned for their home. The wife’s preference? A traditional exterior. The husband’s preference? A slick, modern, transitional style. One preferred minimal use of color, the other enjoyed rich colors. Designing one home – floor plan layout and exterior - that is mindful of both ends of their taste spectrum would be a challenge. There is an undeniable elegance radiating from this Eclectic home. The eggshell tone that dominates the exterior works beautifully
with the creamy beige shutters and shake shingles – a calm, enduring presence to take in. A symmetrical pair of gables stand tall over the porch centered below. The vertical board and batten siding leading the eye down to the entry, sending a warm welcome to visitors. Slightly set back on the façade, a third elevation presents an independent look. Three stacked rows of adjacent windows extend up to its hip roof, sending light into the staircase beyond. The windows pop through making themselves known, the line of the bold dark trim stands out against the light exterior.

From
a steep, south facing slope in upstate NY, the Hudson Valley House is a residence and retreat for a multi-generational family who invites visitors to enjoy the property year-round. The house is built on the same foundation footprint as a previous multi-story house for the same family. The 80-acre site captures the top and surrounding slopes of a mountain foothill that includes a large hilltop pond and space for additional off-grid family cabins in the future. Primary goals of the family included continuing to use this special site by creating a place with large, open spaces that could more easily accommodate family gatherings, take better advantage of spectacular views to the distant Catskill Mountains, address the physical limitations of aging family members, be energy-efficient and be relatively easy to maintain.
56 - AIBD magazine
The new Hudson Valley House maximizes dramatic views of the Hudson Valley and the Catskill Mountains through the design of a raised, cantilevered living volume, rotated 45 degrees to the foundation. The primary building form of the new living level is simple - a single sloping shed roof with expressed wood ceilings and soffits throughout. The higher elevation of the main living volume provides a spectacular view of the forests and mountains beyond. A new driveway access to the house from a part of the road that is almost level with the elevation of the entrance provides a much more accessible approach for the entire family.

Lakeside Modern GRAND ARDA WINNER - Custom Homes (Built) DESIGNED BY David Charlez Designs PHOTOS BY Landmark Photography
This custom home was designed for a young family on
a peninsula on a lake. The home is surrounded by panoramic water views. The family wanted to take advantage of lakeside living and entertaining. These were the driving design focus for this design. The exterior is a combination of materials including stone, Ipe ship lap siding, fiber cement board and panels. The custom entry pivot door is grand, measuring a boasting five feet wide by eight feet tall. Truly a statement feature. Elements of the exterior were brought to the inside by showcasing the exterior stone to the inside on the stone pillars

and repeated again on the fireplace. The custom wood ceiling was carried from the outside soffit into the interior ceilings. The true definition of carrying the outside elements indoors. The lakeside of the design features floor to ceiling glass windows, massive slider doors and a grand screen porch offers indoor/ outdoor living with retractable screens. The interior flow has a comfortable open relationship between the kitchen, dining, and great room. The main floor master suite is tucked away with a secluded entry away from the living and entertaining space. The close proximity of the office and master suite gives the owner easy access to work, yet privacy.

Chateau De La Chevre GRAND ARDA WINNER - Custom Homes (Unbuilt) DESIGNED BY Windstar Homes RENDERINGS BY Windstar Design Group
The design of this 185’ wide three-story home presented
many design challenges due to the topography and a large number of trees on the property. In addition, the property is approximately 20 acres, and part of the program is to have numerous features on the site, such as a golf driving range and putting green; two feature lakes; a nature trail, volleyball court, etc. The main design objective was to create a plan that allowed the clients to entertain large groups of people while enabling them
66 - AIBD magazine
to live in an exceptionally large home without it feeling cavernous and cold. In addition, the orientation of the home and outdoor living areas had to take full advantage of the 20 acres of rolling hills and arbors the property has to offer. One of the more notable features of this residence is the vast number of glass doors and windows that open up the entire rear of the home. The indoor/outdoor connection is seamless and quite breathtaking.

Gaston Avenue GRAND ARDA WINNER - Custom Homes (Unbuilt)
DESIGNED BY Bob Chatham Custom Home Design RENDERINGS BY Michael Moore- renderings
Our clients wanted a French/English style vernacular that while
having a modern appeal would have the beautiful ornamentation of a charming older home. The neighborhood is comprised of custom cottages with historical appeal on quiet tree lined streets only blocks from the bay, where gentle breezes encourage outdoor living spaces. It is the type of community where neighbors still meet in the streets to talk while watching the children ride bicycles. A breezeway is allowed to connect the house and garage and must not exceed ten feet in width. This required us to get creative in the design to provide a modern twist combining a beautiful custom cottage with a matching detached garage/carport combination
equal in charm to the home. The sophisticated brick exterior has a prominent roof line that highlights the welcoming entry. The decorative roof brackets and copper accents that adorn the exterior add rustic appeal, characteristic of this style. Transom windows along with brick fencing adds the charm of a classic English countryside garden cottage. The historical appeal to the home compliments the style of the neighborhood and overall hospitality of its residents. The lot challenges were overcome by research, planning and careful consideration to create a uniquely beautiful façade.

Reeds Lake Contemporay GRAND ARDA WINNER - Custom Homes (Built) DESIGNED BY 42 North - Architecture + Design PHOTOS BY Tracey Illustrations
A lack of a phenomenal view is not applicable to this lakefront residence. Though it is placed on a narrow lot, the home utilizes every opportunity the site provides for a fantastic view with its many notable features. The use of large glass windows and doors combined with the contrasting wood siding and limestone bring a bold and eye catching appeal. Stone piers pepper the perimeter of the home creating a repetitious pattern.
70 - AIBD magazine
A house full of glass walls anchored by stone piers make this home truly substantial and worthy of praise. The home is perfectly designed and positioned to take in the natural beauty of the lake beyond from every angle. Whether you are enjoying a cup of coffee under the cantilevered balcony or sipping a glass of wine from the soaking tub, there is always a picture perfect waterfront view in this home.

Our
client grew up on the East Coast and has a deep appreciation for the Cape Cod style vernacular. We faced the challenge of designing the home to incorporate all her wishes and keep it outside of the flood zone. We were able to design a slab foundation for the home to blend the interior and exterior living by adjoining the beautiful courtyard to the porch and providing gorgeous bay and pool views from several vantage points including the kitchen, dining room, living room, and master bedroom.
exterior and interior were equally important to the client and blend beautifully into a cohesive environment perfect for entertaining. The yard, despite being in a flood zone, has no marshy area and instead will create a fantastic outdoor oasis with the addition of her pool, patio, courtyard, pool/guest house and outdoor grilling station all overlooking the sparkling bay water. Her home will provide the grand presence that she hoped for and will have all the space for entertaining that she could ever need.
The homes exterior features curved roof and wall lines leading to a stone base around the perimeter for a whimsical look. The

The home’s collection of rooms are also complete with a
variety of surprises including a small entertainment room between the twin girls’ bedrooms and jack-and-jill bathroom, and a lower level workshop that is accessible from the over-under garage. One room that encapsulates the attention to detail and whimsy is the main floor powder room, which is painted in Benjamin Moore Narragansett Green on the walls, trim and ceiling. This striking room is all about the accents, as well, with exposed brass pipe and all brass finishings. Another quiet yet surprising detail about the house is the painting of the trim. Typically, modern homes include trim in brighter colors than the walls. On the upper level of the home, bright white trim is still a mainstay, but on the two lower floors, darker grey trim creates an inviting, old-world atmosphere.
78 - AIBD magazine
Possibly one of the most classic elements of the house is the hearth room just off the open concept kitchen that was designed as a place for respite and entertaining. The hearth room fireplace is cast in place concrete with a finish to match a rustic limestone appearance. The concrete forms were built in reverse for the curves to be accurate. The wood-burning fireplace provides yet another classic touch of warmth to the home, and plenty of seating invites family members and guests to stay awhile. With so many unique elements to enjoy, the family of five has settled into a home that fits their needs and their style perfectly.

Two Creeks Screened Retr GRAND ARDA WINNER - Outdoor Living DESIGNED BY Visbeen Architects PHOTOS BY Mike Buck
With
the massive addition, the Porch at Two Creeks creates the seamless flow of indoor/outdoor living that meets the needs of West Michigan’s climate. During renovation at Two Creeks, the original screened porch needed to make way for the addition of the Great Room. But outdoor living was a must, with the client’s love for entertaining.
With arguably some of the best summers in the world, Michigan’s cooler seasons prove a bit more challenging. The retractable Phantom Screens and vinyl walls easily open and close this outdoor living room, where professional ventilation means using the food grade stainless steel kitchen and pizza oven in November as easily as July.
The outdoor living space flows from the Great Room’s south end, easily opening up outdoor options for events. The porch overlooks the valley and wraps around the house to a large grass lawn. Multiple access points off the side of the house mean roving in and out as the client’s desire.
Vaulted, wooden panelled heated ceilings, the continual bluestone flowing from the porch, it’s own fireplace and dining room and kitchen. All the advantages of indoor living spaces are here in this dual sunroom, screened porch, where you’re nestled into the landscape.

Ann Arbor Infill GRAND ARDA WINNER - Published Design DESIGNED BY TR Design Group PHOTOS BY Werner Straube Photography
The home was built for a married couple and their two young children.
The eggshell tone that dominates the exterior works beautifully with the creamy beige shutters and shake shingles – a calm, enduring presence to take in. A symmetrical pair of gables stand tall over the porch centered below. The vertical board and batten siding leading the eye down to the entry, sending a warm welcome to visitors. third elevation presents an independent look. Three stacked rows of adjacent windows extend up to its hip roof, sending light into the staircase beyond. The windows pop through making themselves known, the line of the bold dark trim stands out against the light exterior. The interior of the home is bright and airy as natural light pours into the space and bounces off the walls. The ceiling height sitting 10 ft. overhead, stretching to 12 ft. in the family and harvest room where it goes virtually undetected. Trim line work added to the walls and ceiling are a subtle detail that makes the room feel even more spacious. As the trim runs up and carries across the ceiling it visually encourages the faces to merge, comprehended mentally as an endless room. This sensation is continuous throughout the interior.

Duck Island Renovation GRAND ARDA WINNER - Renovation (Built) DESIGNED BY John W. Ross PHOTOS BY John W. Ross
This project is located on a narrow causeway fronting on its
own private sandy beach and open sound waters to the east and backing on a tidal harbor to the west. This location is subject to high winds and rising tides in storm conditions. The home was originally built as a summer beach cottage in the 1920s and through the years had under gone many changes and additions. The owners were satisfied with the layout of the home but wanted to take better advantage of the view with new windows and decking / basically upgrade the appearance and character with only exterior modifications. However, upon further inspection of existing conditions, many additional issues needed to be addressed. Parts of the home had insufficient structural bracing and exterior walls
100 - AIBD magazine
had little or no insulation. Exterior Styrofoam Board with composite stucco finish provided only a minimal thermal barrier. This exterior finish actually hid places in the home that had deteriorated from water and moisture infiltration thus weather-resistance and long term maintenance were to be strict requirements in the project. The insulation was addressed by using spray foam to code in the ceilings and walls and the buildings instability by constructing sheer walls where necessary. After exploring many architectural styles and details, the clients decided on Timber Frame Post and Beam construction for the final design. They loved the rustic appearance and felt that this theme would add the size and stability to the home that they envisioned.

The entire staircase was built on site. Each tread is unique, varying slightly within it’s location along the ellipse. The handrail was carved in place and finished by hand. But for all it’s drama and detail, a simple material palette imbues a quiet elegance to the space.

Villa Verdelle GRAND ARDA WINNER - Working Drawings DESIGNED BY Patricia Carvajal DRAWINGS BY Patricia Carvajal
The clients wished to build a large, beautiful home that would
primarily be fully accessible to her disabled husband and would also accommodate that all the kids and their families. The designer had to keep the pool as built. They currently live in a 7000 SF home that they built about 6 years ago. To their disappointment the home presents a challenge for him at every corner. Along with several accessibility issues, such as hallways too narrow for the wheelchair or doorways being too narrow for him; they have accepted that he could never enter his house using the front door as it is only steps with no ramp. Another big disappointment is that there are areas of the home to which he cannot access in his wheelchair altogether. The designer consulted with an excellent Designer that specializes in Accessible Design. The result is a beautiful home with wider
hallways without any obstacles such as opening doors encroaching on corridors. No corridor is less than 48” wide. The home as strategically located 5’-0” diameter turn areas throughout. All openings are 36” or wider. The Master Bathroom is equipped with an accessible, yet majestic tub. There are grab bars throughout and a semicircular, walk-in shower which is, of course, fully accessible. The Master Closet offers pull down system for the different hanging tiers. The outdoors also offers full accessibility to all areas. There are no changes in levels without an accessible sloped ramp. The planting beds are designed specifically for him to be able to pursue his gardening. The shape and height of the main planter allow him to reach all areas of the planter without any unusual effort.

Honeysuckle Cottage GRAND ARDA WINNER - Working Drawings
DESIGNED BY David Charlez Designs DRAWINGS BY David Charlez Designs
This
7,200 square foot home is a charming design with inspiration from Cape Cod. Designed with a cedar shake exterior and roof, the grid pattern on the windows offers a classic design that could place the home on the east coast. One of the most striking features of the design is the symmetry of the front. It is created with balancing matching doors that flank the front door – the office on the left, the formal dining room on the right side. A design that is created for entertainment and poolside enjoyment also creates a sense of privacy in different areas of the home. Privacy is achieved in the owner’s suite by being tucked on the left side, away from the everyday action in the heart of the home. The main level everyday action features a kitchen that has an expansive pantry perfect for hosting catered events. The informal dining space opens to the covered porch, which hosts an outdoor
kitchen. The screen porch is connected to a covered porch, adding enjoyment to the outdoor activities of the patio and pool. The pool bath is equipped with a stackable washer and dryer, access to the outdoor shower and has easy access to the pool and main part of the house. The oversized rear entry has ample storage with a walkin closet, built-in lockers and a bench. The upper-level offers privacy for each bedroom with their own individual bathrooms. The craft room serves a dual function with incorporating the laundry room. The upper level also includes a bonus room and loft. The loft has a secret ladder and elevated reading loft – every child’s dream. The lower level is a very comfortable area with a family room, wet bar, billards room, a hockey recreation room, an exercise room, the fifth bedroom, a bathroom, and ample storage space. As shown, the working drawings of this design capture each detail of the design, making this family’s dream home a reality.

and expansions spanning 50 years and 3 separate builders. It had become a melding of modern and Spanish styling with a certain appeal to our soon-to-be clients. The overall layout was interesting as the home had 2 large courtyards as part of its design. One Interior courtyard the house surrounded on 4 sides and an entry court of similar size bordered on 3 sides. The owner wanted these courts retained although we determined early that the drainage of these courts, poor at best, was the downfall of the design. And so the process began.
