NCBDC President’s Message
Iwant to take this opportunity to provide an update on the progress in our moving toward accreditation of the AIBD building designer certification program.

As of July 6, our application is in the hands of ANAB, which is the accreditation board for ANSI. The application Is in review, and God willing, we will know very soon if the last nine years of hard work are finally recognized.
Thank you to the Council and our staff for their continuous hard work to make this happen. Their dedication to this organization is something I have always admired. I also recognize and thank our recent past Presidents, John Fought and Alan Abrams, for having the foresight to set this path in motion.
This path we are on is so critical. I recently heard someone ask, “Are we a big enough organization for this?” My answer is yes, we are! It only must start with one person who believes they are big enough, recognizes their worth, and is willing to stand before the world and say, see me, see what I do, and know that I do it with a knowledgeable mind and for the greatest good.
With our accreditation, being a Certified Professional Building Designer, I believe it provides more validity to our jobs. If you have been in the industry for a lifetime and feel that becoming certified does not help you in your career, you may be correct. But I ask, how does this example affect the up-and-coming new talent? Most likely, they will need to be certified.
Certification provides a level of commitment that I believe will be required for building departments and the code council to take us more seriously, not only now but in the future. As the government imposes more regulation on the building industry, we need to stand together to show that we take our craft seriously and practice with credentials that are not questioned.
For people like me who have an engineering education, but not a P.E. nor an architect, I am tired of people asking if you’re just a designer, do I need an architect or an engineer to stamp your plans? The answer is no! I am a Certified Professional Building Designer.
My mission is to encourage all of us to come together and support the certification and accreditation process and get all residential designers certified. By doing so, we will convey our value as design professionals and industry leaders.
