IC 2015 Bid India

Page 1

My fellow AIESECers,

International Congress 2015 stands lofty as the arena to shape the future of AIESEC 2020. This milestone conference will converge our youth leaders, under the canopy of leadership development for a positive impact. AIESEC India has always shared the responsibility of pioneering a host of activities within the network and been the recipient of Global Contribution Awards over the last two years, which is a clear testament to our efforts. Central to our growth has been a keen focus on quality while enhancing our relevance within India. The historical significance of this landmark 5-year conference stands as a test to the caliber of the standards that have been held before be it at Agra in 2005 or at Hyderabad in 2010 and AIESEC India would like to extend it’s contribution by bringing AIESEC 2015 back to India. AIESEC India exists in the paradox of a nation that effortlessly interweaves globalization within a rich historical tapestry. With a united membership, a passion that runs deep in our veins and a commitment to excellence, AIESEC India is ready, eager and willing to once again carry the mantle of hosting the largest youth congregation of the network. Romain Rolland famously wrote: “If there is one place on the face of earth where all the dreams of living men have found a home from the very earliest days when man began the dream of existence, it is India”. It is to this land of ancient civilizations and modern marvels that I invite the network to celebrate and co-create AIESEC 2020 together at International Congress 2015 hosted in the shadow of Taj Mahal in Agra.

Yours Sincerely, AIESEC India

3. Political Situation: For nearly 65 years now, India has enjoyed the privilege of being an independent nation. However, it has faced a decent struggle for stability over the last couple of years, standing up against corruption, disarray of political parties, policy implementation, diversity, and mild radicalism. Like any other country India has been facing instability due to Naxal rebellion in its countryside and its intermittent border battles in the Kashmir region with Pakistan, And like always India has been able to stand tall. Being a democracy, India is heading towards the 2014 General Election, which will decide which party is going to get the clear majority in the Parliament. As a part of preparation for the big political battle, all the parties seem to be ready with their campaigning strategy and issues. Specific issues like corruption, inflation, subsidies on LPG, and hike in Petrol prices are the current topics of discussion, as a solution to the previous year which saw a full, high voltage worth of political activities. A solution to the above mentioned issues that is being debated over currently is building international relations to support the current economy and peace. However, with all this activity, there is now a nascent interest in building young leaders in the country, with the support of political as well as corporate institutions. Several initiatives have been introduced and backed, which enable young people to take action on a micro level. India today has an environment which is friendly and open to discussions involving international agenda. Several enterprises today are encouraging dialogues themed ‘global’ and are supporting all positive outcome of these discussions as well. Although, India is facing certain barriers, its inclement is towards a sound and steady nation looking for ideas that lead to growth. Travel in India India is a vast country that's just over one-third of the size of the United States. Much of it is rural, and there are some incredible sights to be seen and discovered. To the north, there are the Himalayas. To the south, beaches. To the west, desert. And to the least, tribal territory. India is often thought of as a backpacker destination with grotty hotel rooms and dirt everywhere. Let me assure you that this definitely isn't the reality. You can travel as cheaply or as lavishly as you want in India, and that's definitely part of its appeal as a tourist destination. The luxury segment of the market offers some mesmerizing accommodations, such as authentic palace hotels.Alternatively you might prefer a quant guesthouse or homestay. Options, such as these top budget hotels in India, abound. There's a saying in India, "Athithi Devo Bhava", which means "the guest is God". Indians consider it a huge honor to have guests in their home, and go out of their way to please them. There's nothing like Indian hospitality. And, as a result of the growing popualarity of homestays in India, there are plenty of opportunities to experience it. Many homestays are far from the humble abodes you may expect too! India is place that everyone should visit once in their lives to get out of their comfort zones and get a different perspective on life. The culture shock in India can be hard to deal with. However, you'll quickly come to appreciate what you have back home and how fortunate you really are. Indian food can take a bit of getting used to for some people, but it really is worth it. You may be surprised to find that Indian cuisine is vastly different to the standard fare served up in most Indian restaurants, which is in fact predominantly north Indian cuisine. Railway: Main article: Railways in Agra Cost: Avg. 430 INR Time: 3hrs Agra is on the central train line between Delhi (Station Code: NDLS) and Mumbai (Bombay) (Station Code: CSTM) and between Delhi and Chennai (Station Code: MAS) and many trains connect Agra with all major Indian cities like NewDelhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, etc. every day. Some east-bound trains from Delhi also travel via Agra, so direct connections to points in Eastern India (including Kolkata) (Calcutta) are also available. There are close to 20 trains to New Delhi and Gwalior Junction every day, There are three main railway stations in Agra:

Agra Cantt (Station Code: AGC) is the main railway station and lies southwest of the Taj and Agra Fort, both of which are a short ride from the station by car, auto-rickshaw, or cycle rickshaw.

Agra Fort Railway Station (Station Code: AF) near Agra Fort, is infrequently serviced by the interstate express trains, it is one of the oldest railway stations in the country. The station serves trains to east (Kanpur, Gorakhpur, Kolkata, Guwahati) and central India Ratlam, Nagda, Kota(Haldighati Express). Some of these trains also stop at Agra Cantt. The luxury trains – the Palace on Wheels, and the Royal Rajasthan on Wheels also stop at Agra on their eight-day round trip of tourist destinations in Rajasthan and Agra. The Buddhist Special Train also visits Agra. Distance from Delhi Airport to Railway Stn: 15.8km Means of Transport recommended: Delhi Metro Apporx Cost: 80-120 INR [1-1.5 EUR] Distance from Agra Railway Stn to Venue: 8km Means of Transport recommended: Cab Apporx Cost: 160-200 INR [2-2.5 EUR]

Flight: Agra Airport is about 12.5 km (8 mi) from the city center (Indian Air Force Airport – no scheduled commercial flights)

Local Travel in Agra: Bus services are run by Agra Municipal Corporation. Other para-transit modes include rickshaws and autorickshaws. While passengers need to negotiate rates for the rickshaws and they are usually expensive, there is a system of (what is called) 'Tempo' which are autorickshaws that run on specific routes called out by the drivers. Tempos take around 6 people simultaneously and work out to be the most economical and practical. Polluting vehicles are not allowed near the Tāj Mahal, so one needs to take electric autos or Tanga (Tonga) from a few kilometres outside the Tāj Mahal. Now, Tempos have been largely replaced by three wheeled auto-rikshaws which run on compressed natural gas. UP State Road Transport Corporation does run some air-conditioned and non-airconditioned low-floor buses within Agra which run on specific routes including M G Road. A lot is being done to improve the traffic system of Agra but the efforts seem in vain due to poor civic sense of the residents here. Blaring Horns and hurry of people at road may give you headache.
