Yana Makaveeva CEO AIESEC in the United Arab Emirates
Why AIESEC? It was a pleasure and honor to welcome our distinguished guests and young leaders to the first ever edition of UAE Youth to Business Forum. Heading a youth organization in a country like UAE, I stand at a unique position of being in one of the most central and important economic hubs in the world, a world capital as you might call it. What makes a city, a world center? What is that cities like New York, Paris, Rome, Tokyo and London have in common? It’s vibrancy. I see that vibrancy everywhere. From the hardworking constructions laborers, the taxi drivers, the store assistants, the waiters to the executives of large corporations who come from so many different countries and so many walks of life, all, chasing the UAE dream. It is a generous country with compassionate people who have left their doors open for the world. UAE gives millions the chance to hope for a better future if you are willing to give it all. And as the youth what is our responsibility? It is up to our generation to sustain or build global cities like Dubai. There is an entire generation, be it locals or expatriates who are born of the UAE, moved here in recent years and all of them call it home because they’ve built their lives and relationships with the people here. As a young person, living in UAE, you are already global citizens.
And as global citizens, sustainability of world cities of such a monumental proportion becomes your responsibility. Relationships between different nations are not formed on the basis of governments and leaders but are actually formed by people. And as the youth and future leaders, we have a shared destiny and a certain obligation towards the coming generations. This is really what an organization like AIESEC gets its principles from and this is what we aim to do. The entrepreneurial spirit of the country has given so many the opportunity to hope that no matter where you are from, and what you are doing, you can still make it big if you are willing to work hard. Let’s show the world that we are not really about our BBMs and fancy cars but are actually responsible and young global citizens who are more than capable of running value driven businesses and organization. Let’s show the world that we are passionate to build a future that is worth investing in. Carpe Postremo, seize the future!

Scott Ragsdale Chairman Naseba Scott talked about the difficult climb to success. In order to reach it, you must believe in your goals, but before that, you must first believe in yourself. He mentioned that the beginning of the climb to success starts out great, but there is a point in which you have to face difficult situations and setbacks, and this is why not everyone’s goal is met, because the enthusiasm of starting a goal starts to disappear and many people stop the climb and start going down, in other words, they quit and start another goal. Scott’s speech ended as he stated that in order to be great at something, you must be able to show focused commitment at what you do.

The Sessions The Leadership Experience by Iyad Mourtada, General Manager, Open Thinking Iyad mentioned that “leadership is a journey. It starts with modeling the way when leaders align their actions with their words and then by inspiring a shared vision. Then it is based on challenging the process and enabling others to act and it followed by encouraging the heart and recognizing the people who made it happen.” These are the five practices of exemplary leadership, based on the 25 years of research by Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner called “The Leadership Challenge”. Iyad demonstrated these five practices by making them do many exercises that allowed them to apply each one of these practices in creative way and learn how they can lead us to the future.
