Themes circling around identity, humanity, social change, and society inspire me greatly, as do many artists and photographers who convey these themes in their work. Tracey Emmin, Cindy Sherman, Man Ray, Richard Avedon, Andreas Gursky, Yoshitomo Nara, Julian Schnabel, and Roy Lichtenstein, are just a few examples of artists who inspire me.

I have used a variety of artistic techniques, skills and processes this year. Beginning with watercolour to demonstrate a colour scheme and black and white pencil studies to exhibit form and light. I next combined my pencil studies with embroidery in order to bring an element of abstract expressionism into my work, simultaneously experimenting with black and white acrylics. Deciding to zoom further into ‘nonconformist’, slightly abstract techniques, I developed my skills in collage and line drawing so as to gain a broader

understanding of other forms in art. Inspired by many 20th century photographers, I decided to this artistic form next, creating ‘unusual’ images using paper cut-outs and mirrors (sometimes using photoshop). I next practised oil paints, creating two large oil paintings (one of which was my final exam) before the whole class practiced our skills in expressive forms of art like continuous line, ink painting, scribble drawings, and blind sketches. Following this, I was able to use clay for the first time, creating a clay relief sculpture of my own with the rest of the class, before I refocused once more on photography and oil painting in preparation for my next mock exam.

To develop my initial ideas, I often began by choosing an artist who portrays a similar theme to the one I have in mind. After choosing a variety of their pieces, I de constructed the elements in each one (the different principles of design, for example) and then chose a few elements of their work which I would like to use as inspiration. Next, I created a base for my outcomes (photography studies, pencil sketches, colour studies in watercolour - inspired by the artists’ work) and, from there, I developed my ideas from the ‘ground up’ to create more developed art pieces.

My outcomes focus mainly on the events surrounding childhood innocence. The innocence which comes with not caring about, nor abiding by societal standards. Others focus on the events surrounding the concepts of identity and self-expression.
