Bolen: ABACE Reflects Evolving Bizav in China ABACE is continuing to reflect the evolving and growing nature of business aviation in China, National Business Aviation Association president and CEO told reporters yesterday as ABACE was set to open. “China is still in the early stages of business aviation,” he said. “[The industry] is evolving in a very different way than it evolved in the U.S.” In the U.S., business aviation initially grew out of use of small general aviation aircraft and eventually into larger, long-range aircraft. In China, business aviation began with the largest aircraft and is pushing down into smaller and lighter aircraft. Business aircraft operations also are evolving differently in China. “Because it is still in the early stages, we see a lot of management and charter companies,” he said. “We don’t see as many individuals in China that are flying corporate planes for business.” That might change, he said, but it has evolved from more of an airline-oriented operating environment. To continue this evolution, the industry needs to build up a pipeline of pilots and maintenance technicians that are focused on the business aviation market. o

ABACE attendees have traveled from more than 40 countries to attend the Shanghai show, according to organizers. Bolen was also happy to see diversity growing among the ABACE exhibitors. “We’re seeing the China market evolve,” he said, “and it’s expanding to various types of aircraft and operations.” This includes the Beijing Red Cross Emergency Medical Center air ambulance Falcon 2000LX on the static display, a representation of the public

Shanghai Hawker Pacific, host of the ABACE show, enjoyed a 30 percent increase in its maintenance business last year, compared with 2015. Overall traffic increased by 11 percent year-over-year. And 2017 is starting off promising to do even better.

SHPBASC saw its best year ever in 2016 For every year since its opening in 2010, the Shanghai Hawker Pacific Business Aviation Service Center (SHPBASC)— the perennial host of ABACE—has experienced growth. Last year was no exception, with the facility, the only FBO serving the metropolis of Shanghai, reporting an 11 percent increase in traffic year-over-year. According to general manager Carey Matthews, the FBO, which serves business aviation operators using both Hongqiao and Pudong Airports, is on a path to exceed that pace. “It was our

busiest three months to start the year ever through March, and it was our busiest year ever last year,” Matthews told AIN, noting that last month finished up with a 12 percent increase in traffic compared to a year earlier. “That goes back to the fact that we set up high-density parking in both Hongqiao and Pudong,” he said. The location’s maintenance business— which is authorized to work on aircraft from Bombardier, Cessna, Dassault and Hawker Beechcraft, and is approved for maintenance on the Gulfstream G450 and G550 by the CAAC and FAA—also

HondaJet CEO hopes to find a welcoming market in China The HondaJet is one of the stars of ABACE 2017, where it is making its Chinese debut. The new light jet has been developed by the U.S.-based Honda Aircraft subsidiary of Japan’s Honda Motor at Greensboro, North Carolina. “This is a historical moment for the HondaJet development and the program,” said Honda Aircraft president and CEO Michimasa Fujino. Deliveries began after initial U.S. FAA certification was achieved in December 2015, and this was followed by approval from Europe’s EASA in May 2016. As of the end of March, the manufacturer had delivered 37 of the light jets. According to Fujino, Honda Aircraft intends to deliver around 60 more in its next fiscal year, which starts this month and runs to the end of March next year. While the company doesn’t provide a backlog number, Fujino has for a long time acknowledged orders for more than 100 HondaJets, and in November the company increased its production rate from four to five per month. To date no Asia Pacific sales have been logged, but Fujino told AIN that he expects this to change soon. “There has been some

strong interest from Asia and that’s why we’re coming to ABACE, because we want to verify this interest,” he said. Fujino and his team believe that the technology delivered by the HondaJet represents such a leap forward in the private jet market that it will significantly expand the light jet segment. So far, the aircraft has attracted interest from a mix of private individuals (some of them

noted an increase of approximately 30 percent over the previous year. Matthews said his staff of technicians has “stepped up and evolved to where I think they are one of the most competent and well rounded group of business aviation mechanics in China.” Last week, the airport completed the rerouting of the main fuel feed pipeline into Hongqiao, paving the way for construction to start on the FBO’s new 4,500sq-m (48,437-sq-ft) hangar. The new building is funded by SHPBASC. Larger than the structure currently occupied

by ABACE, and able to accommodate the latest generation of ultra-long range business jets, it could be available by next year’s show, Matthews noted. While its main facility is at Hongqiao, SHPBASC has a full time staff of 30 at Pudong with offices, a VIP lounge and 24 parking spots for aircraft. The airport currently is building its fifth runway, which is expected to enter service next year. Use of that runway will be largely reserved for flight testing of Comac’s new 919 narrowbody airliner. Once that is complete, SHPBASC hopes to see construction of a full-fledged FBO there, to rival its facility at Hongqiao. o

wanting to pilot their own aircraft), companies and, increasingly, charter operators. The latter could open the door to larger fleet sales. According to Fujino, rising wealth across Asia is paving the way for market expansion, with China now having one of the world’s highest concentrations of highnet-worth individuals (HNWIs). For now, the ratio of private aircraft per HNWI in China is 2.6:1, whereas in North America it is around 18:1, according to the company. “We hope the Chinese people like the HondaJet and stimulate the light jet market in China,” Fujino said. “For domestic flights in China, most cities are within the [2,266-km/1,223-nm] range of the HondaJet,” he explained. Another advantage that the aircraft has in a country with limited airport infrastructure is its ability to land on less than 3,050 feet of runway and take off with just 4,000 feet. “And business people in China are now more focused on efficiency,” rather than aircraft size. He maintained that the younger generation of wealthy Chinese is “very particular about their lifestyle and the quality of the products they buy.” In his view, these factors play to the strengths of the Honda brand. Beyond China, Fujino sees prospects for the HondaJet in other strong Asia Pacific economies, including Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore. He believes

that his native Japan might also be ready for an aircraft in this class, but observed, “This may have to wait until some more [airport] infrastructure is available.” Honda Aircraft is still evaluating the prospect of obtaining Chinese CAAC certification for the HondaJet. “There is no concrete timing yet,” he said. “The China market has strong potential.” Fujino hopes that this year’s ABACE show will provide an indication of the strength of the Chinese market for the HondaJet. “When the time comes we will consider applying [for CAAC certification].” The HondaJet boasts a higher maximum cruise altitude than most aircraft in its class, at 43,000 feet versus no more than 41,000 feet. It can cruise at up to 422 knots (781 km/h) and, according to Honda Aircraft, has 17 percent better fuel efficiency than direct competitors. The journey from Greensboro, North Carolina, to Shanghai for this week’s ABACE show is the HondaJet’s longest yet. The direct distance is 12,258 km (6,624 nm), but the aircraft made nine stops on the way, including in Canada, Alaska, Russia and Japan. Previously, it has flown to Japan and also to South America. Following the ABACE show, the HondaJet is due to visit Hong Kong International airport next week (on April 19) and Taipei Songshan Airport on April 21. o

Asian Sky releases latest business jet fleet report Asian Sky Group (ASG, Booth P119) released its latest, and fifth annual, Asia Pacific Business Jet Fleet Report yesterday here at ABACE 2017. The report’s structure has changed this year, according to ASG managing director Jeffrey Lowe, with individual country reports not included as they are all available online now. The company has set up a new website for its growing media content, reflecting the new Asian Sky Media division of the Hong Kong-based company. According to the report, the Asia Pacific business jet fleet reached 1,155 aircraft at the end of last year, up 3 percent from 2015. The region added 112 aircraft—57 new and 55 pre-owned business jets—but 78 aircraft left the region. This represent a net increase of 34, compared with 58 in 2015. The number of pre-owned aircraft saw a “dramatic increase” from 71 in 2015 to 127 last year, the latest report notes. Total transactions—both new and used—rose 40 percent year-over-year, from 131 to 184 aircraft, with total value increasing 38 percent. Intra-region business jet transactions decreased, mainly due to the “strength and current drawing power” of the U.S. market, which took nearly three-quarters of the 78 aircraft that were sold in Asia Pacific last year, the report shows. The top-four markets in the region— namely mainland China, Australia, India and Hong Kong—represented twothirds of the market. According to the fleet report, the largest single market was mainland China, with 313 jets, but there was a “deceleration of growth.” Greater China—mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan—remained the largest market, with 477 aircraft (41 percent of the Asia Pacific fleet).

Covering detailed statistics on Asia Pacific business jet activity, the fifth annual issue of Asian Sky’s Fleet Report went public yesterday here at ABACE.

Bombardier, Gulfstream and Cessna were the top-three OEMs in the region last year, accounting for 26 percent, 24 percent and 19 percent of the Asia Pacific fleet, respectively. In net fleet additions, Gulfstream “significantly outperformed” other OEMs in 2016 with 20 net aircraft. The most popular aircraft type added in the region was the G650/G650ER, adding an “incredible” 23 aircraft (17 new and six pre-owned). Asia Sky’s report notes that the top 10 operators in the region operate 26 percent of the fleet; nine of these operators are located in Greater China. This has changed little since 2014, despite a few new entrants to the market. Deer Jet remains the top operator, though its fleet has contracted with the retirement of older aircraft types in the past couple of years. BAA’s fleet also declined,

by 15 percent, but it remains the top Asia Pacific operator of Airbus bizliners; Deer Jet is the top operator of Gulfstreams. TAG Aviation ended 2016 with 41 aircraft in the region. From an age perspective, 62 percent of the region’s business jet fleet is less than 10 years old. ASG believes that 2017 will see growth flattening out at around 1 percent and “sees a modest return to growth in 2018, when the market should also get some stimulation from new deliveries of Falcon 8Xs, Gulfstream G500s and Bombardier Global 7000s.” The report notes China’s new initiatives on infrastructure, pointing specifically to the planned new Beijing Daxing International Airport, which is expected to open in 2019 and serve Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei. ASG said, “The new airport will free up capacity at current airports

Asian Sky Group Poised for Further Growth Hong Kong-based Asian Sky Group (ASG) has experienced significant growth over the past year. As well as “securing large completion and consulting contracts across Asia,” it professes to being “very focused on our core expertise of brokering, consulting projects, market research, luxury chartering and media.” The company has expanded into Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur) and has a new sales vice president, Neil Marshall, covering the southeast Asia market. Lynton Van Aswegen joined also the company to head up its South African division, “To give us better insight and presence in Africa; we feel that Africa is China five years ago,” said the company. ASG’s headquarters in Hong Kong has also grown with a “full service marketing department including three graphic designers, an editor and a digital analyst, a data team of six, in-house legal counsel, a charter service desk, a market analysis department and new senior management. In total our team has grown to 18 in Hong Kong alone,” said a company spokesperson.

On the information side, ASG published its latest Asia Pacific Region Civil Helicopter Fleet Report at the Heli-Expo show in Dallas early last month, while its business jet year-end fleet report is being released here at ABACE this week (see main story). The sixth issue of its Asian Sky Quarterly magazine is also available here at ABACE. This issue of ASQ highlights Korea in its country profile and the Bombardier Global XRS /6000 for its aircraft spotlight. It also has a special section on aircraft chartering in Asia, which follows the issue of Luxury Chartering, a new publication that the company launched in January. “A few other special features are in the works too,” said the spokesperson, “including an infrastructure report and a China GA report.” Meanwhile, a new company division, Asian Sky Media, has been officially launched here at ABACE 2017 to house the expanded publishing activities, and will have a separate booth at the show. Its website includes all of ASG’s reports and magazines, as well as market information listed by country. Podcasts and webcasts are also planned. n

and provide considerable support to the business aviation industry.” In terms of aircraft registrations, the U.S. N-register remains the most popular and grew 4 percent in the region last year. Cayman and Isle of Man registration numbers each grew 1 percent. Meanwhile, mainland China registrations decreased 7 percent, and ASG observed, “Until the tax environment for business jets improves, this trend is unlikely to change.” Growing Mandates

ASG’s consultancy side has been growing with recent contract awards, including being selected by an Asia-based client in the completion of itswidebody bizliner. ASG’s oversight includes everything from contract negotiations to design, engineering, certification, manufacturing, procurement, final inspection and completed delivery. The company also continues to gain remarketing mandates for business aircraft, while a significant recent consultancy project was its carrying out of a study into the feasibility of using Clark Air Base in the Philippines for business aviation. The study, carried out for a local aviation services provider, analyzed the business jet fleet and infrastructure availability within a three-hour flight range, providing an overview of the potential market, as well as evaluating the viability of aviation operations to be located at the airport. By identifying the region’s overall business jet fleet size, available parking and infrastructure, including FBO and MRO services, ASG assessed the need for future aviation infrastructure through a detailed financial forecast and project risk analysis. o

That, however, has all changed over the past 18 months—perhaps jolted into action by the need to respond to various obstacles to business aviation growth in the region. Charlie Mularski, chairman of AsBAA, told AIN in an interview last month that the association’s recent success started with it being more organized and focused. This, started with the establishment of a strategy based on the following three core sets of goals: the first, to explain the value of business aviation to the media, politicians and regulators and to start to overcome negative perceptions of the sector; the second, to act as a “networking platform” for aviation and nonaviation parties; and the third,

wanted to look at their plants and factories.” Another example has been in Hong Kong where AsBAA has been very active to improve the availability of slots at an airport that is working at more than 95 percent of capacity already. “We’ve been working with the authorities to maximize the availability of slots for our operators,” said Mularski. “The airlines and cargo are taking more and more slots, but more than 140 business aircraft have Hong Kong as their home base; that’s more than Teterboro [just outside New York] and one of the highest concentrations in the world.” For the future, Mularski said, the vision is to be able to treat Macao/Hong Kong/Zhuhai as one area for aviation purposes. This would build on the initiative whereby aircraft can already use Zhuhai [in mainland China] as a temporary base for parking, although approval takes some hours. “We hope to get more volume there,” he said, noting that when the new Hong KongZhuhai-Macau bridge/tunnel opens, it will help make the case for aviation too. Additionally, he said the first commercial helicopter flight between Hong Kong and Zhuhai showed the Hong Kong government regular operations on this sector could be achieved. This new operation was flown by Sky Shuttle, which already flew to Macau and Shenzhen. “That’s in progress—but we’ve had great feedback from the Hong Kong legislative council, who are all aligned and willing to help,” said Mularski. AsBAA is also campaigning to keep the helipad at the Kai Tak site of Hong Kong’s former international airport. The city center site is being targeted by real estate developers, although

Membership Growth

“Our membership has grown 20 percent year-over-year, and we’re striving to add a lot more in 2017,” said Mularski, who explained that AsBAA has also added more layers of membership for small companies and individuals to join, and to bring in service providers such as brokers, law firms and insurance companies. “A few [aircraft] owners have also asked how they can help,” he added. “They don’t want to be in the newspapers, though.” AsBAA, itself, is keen to engage with the media, however, both within aviation and the mainstream press. “We have been very busy doing media articles and editorials. Our biggest goal with the media is to continue to convey the message of the value of business aviation. Sadly, though, reporters are usually looking for the bad news. Our goal is to turn that around.” All the main business aircraft manufacturers are members of AsBAA. “We praise them for being fully aligned with AsBAA, and we don’t see any rivalry.” And they’ve got local people selling to locals, and all are very well in tune with market needs.” Mularski acknowledged that AsBAA is operating to a tight budget and so is increasing the focus on fundraising to maximize the human resources. “We’re looking to have a business development person working on commission. At the moment we have one full-time staff member in China and one in Hong Kong,” he explained. “And the ultimate goal is to be able to hire a managing director as the key person for all the issues. Then we would have a lot more traction—we could triple our effectiveness and complete projects faster.” In June, AsBAA will hold elections for a new board and Mularski is hoping to get a strong and effective roster to take the association forward. In response to the need for AsBAA to have a broader reach around the Asia Pacific

region, Mularski admitted that, “some of the guys in Southeast Asia feel a little left out, but every year ABACE attracts more companies from across Asia Pacific. We [AsBAA] have chapters in Indonesia and Malaysia and have an increasing presence in Thailand—so we’re not just focused in Hong Kong and China. But the challenge is that most individuals [active in the association] are in Hong Kong. We had a meeting in Hong Kong in December and developed our strategic plan for 2017, to focus more on the important things.” AsBAA has close ties with other associations in the region, including in the Japan Business Aviation Association (JBAA), ABAA in Australia and the BAOA in India, while AsBAA covers from China down to Indonesia. “All of us are under IBAC—and we see each other four times a year at their meetings, sharing intelligence and best practices,” he said. In 2017 the main focus is on facilitating cross-border low-level helicopter flying in to China. At the same time, AsBAA is more active in the Southeast Asia market, where it faces some challenges in Thailand, for example, with charter operating licenses and permission to fly routes within the country. In June, the group will hold its annual general meeting in Singapore. The other major event of AsBAA’s year is its gala dinner and awards ceremony. Last year 300 people attended and it raised a lot of money, partly for the Orbis flying eye hospital. This year it will take place on November 10 in Hong Kong.“It’s becoming the highlight of the aviation calendar,” said Mularski. Market Resurgence?

Overall, while business aviation activity in Asia has not stalled, the region has so far failed to generate the growth that was widely anticipated by the industry a few years ago. In China, there has clearly been an image problem associated with private aircraft ownership. “From member comments and trends it’s clear the economic growth in China is still very strong, and we see that the market is continuing to grow,” said Mularski. “And new aircraft continue to arrive, even if not at the volume of three-to-five years ago. There is less speculation [over aircraft transactions] now, and the market has normalized to match real demand.”

The midsize aircraft market in particular is strengthening, he told AIN, “and we hear from brokers that the preowned market is very strong.” However, he said, buyers are putting more emphasis on “optimizing their requirements for their flying needs…we

see more and more corporations looking at that, and also moving more to seeing the aircraft as a tool. So it’s all positive.” According to Mularski, access to low-level Chinese airspace for civil aircraft is improving as long as operators confine themselves to a limited number of specific corridors. “The good news is that we’re seeing

airports being built in large numbers,” he said. However, one challenge is that the new runways tend to be below 800 meters (2,625 feet) in length, because it is so much easier to gain approval for construction with those limits, which are of little use to business aviation. However, Mularski pointed out that some of the new runways

Singapore remains a staple of business aviation support and activity in Asia Pacific. are being built with provisional approval for extensions to be added at a later date. Overall, Mularski sees the lack of airports and capacity at hubs as being “the biggest limitation we have all across Asia. We are still confined to the big commercial airports, and all have [increasing traffic] from airlines, so the situation is going to become worse and worse.” What about the availability of ground handling and maintenance services around Asia for business aviation? Mularski pointed to Seletar Airport in Singapore as an example of a hub of business aviation activity, and contrasted this with the limitations in Hong Kong. “Hong Kong was a hub for maintenance with Metrojet and others, but the capacity constraints have hurt its market share,” he commented. China has a few dedicated maintenance, repair and overhaul facilities for business aircraft, but AsBAA can see a case for more to be established there. “We may also see facilities built in Thailand and Indonesia, but the challenge is that they will still be at main hubs. We also need airports where we can have parking and other services. Seletar is an exception,” Mularski. In his view, Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport could have continued to operate successfully had it been kept open as a dedicated business aviation gateway. Here at Shanghai’s Hongqiao Airport, where the ABACE show is once again being staged, authorities in early March decided to limit business aviation traffic to off-peak hours, because there is so much demand from scheduled airlines. Still, Mularski said that AsBAA is more optimistic about future prospects now than it was at the time of the 2016 show. “ABACE needs to be seen as an Asian show, not just a Chinese one,” he concluded. o

Dassault Falcon Paris interior

Stylish living takes to the sky by James Wynbrandt The business aircraft cabin represents the pinnacle of interior design, and attendees at ABACE 2016 can see it all right here. The latest in cabin styling and technology is on display in the aircraft open for inspection on the ramp, and at the booths of the interior design, installation and modification specialists. Here are some of the highlights to look for at this year’s show. Switzerland-based Jet Aviation (Booth H218) has a delegation of completion specialists here “to engage prospective customers in one-on-one sessions at our booth,” said Matthew Woollaston, vice-president, completions sales and marketing. The experts will be equipped with the

company’s proprietary JetVision app for tablet-based 3D presentations, which include its latest “Limitless” design video. The presentation “captures the essence of the cabin completions process, from design through to installation and redelivery,” Woollaston said. “It’s a demonstration of our commitment to both beautiful design and craftsmanship, alongside the newest technologies.” Attendees can upload the app and presentations to their own devices for later viewing. Jet Aviation recently redelivered an Airbus ACJ330 from its Basel Completion Center that showcased several examples of these qualities. They include

high-end finishes and, as a result of its weight management processes, a “significantly lighter” aircraft than the customer required, making this “the longest-range VIP A330 completed to date,” Woollaston said. Two current green completions underway for Chinese customers demonstrate the company is “already experiencing success in this area”: A BBJ1, and an ACJ330-200 inducted late last year. “We definitely foresee an increase in customers from Greater China,” said Woollaston. He also noted an increased interest from Chineselanguage press in business aviation and aircraft, boding well for the future prospects. Jet Aviation ACJ350

A full services provider with one of the world’s largest fleets of managed aircraft (more than 30 in Asia), Jet Aviation will open a new MRO operation in Macau later this year. Meanwhile, back in Basel, technicians and craftsmen are at work completing the interior of the first privately owned Boeing 787-900 Dreamliner for an undisclosed Middle Eastern customer, scheduled for redelivery next year. The interior was developed by London’s Andrew Winch Design, a bespoke firm that often designs clients’ homes and yachts, as well as their jet cabins. The Dassault Falcon family of jets—today the Falcon 2000S, 2000LXS, 900LX, 7X and 8X— has long been known for sophisticated design flair, both in its airframes and cabin interiors. Here in Shanghai, the French manufacturer (Chalet 9) is also highlighting the cabin refurbishments Dassault Falcon Services (DFS) offers for its in-service fleet. Current and legacy models alike can be restored “close to the original aircraft,” said Thierry Salaun, vice president, service center marketing and sales. But today the emphasis is on bringing a modern, up-todate cabin to older Falcons. “We have developed our own interior products, very similar to a brand new aircraft, with the same interior philosophy as the 5X,” Salaun said, referring to the company’s forthcoming model, which features a cabin 8.5 feet (2.6 m) wide. Salaun pointed out the Service Center’s location alongside Dassault’s headquarters and completions showroom at Paris-Le Bourget

Airport provides direct access to the best of the OEM’s interior styling and technology. Here at the ABACE show, Dassault is showcasing its new Falcon Paris interior refurbishment. The six- to eight-week upgrade can be performed during a major inspection or on its own. The first Falcon Paris refurb, for a recent purchaser of a preowned Falcon, was underway just prior to ABACE. Attendees can see renderings and photos of the Falcon Paris interior at the company’s booth. Dassault also performs refurbishments at its U.S. facilities in the states of Arkansas and Delaware. Dassault sees Asia—particularly Greater China—as “a key arena,” Salaun said, and is already “deeply involved in supporting customers in the region.” The refurbishment services take that support to a new level, he said. Last November DFS opened a new facility at BordeauxMérignac Airport adjacent the OEM’s final assembly line. The facility’s primary focus is support for 7Xs and 8Xs, and DFS can leverage the proximity to manufacturing and engineering expertise in its aftermarket services. That’s “important for this area of the world” Salaun said, while Dassault pursues CAAC approvals for providing major maintenance under its own brand here. U.S.-based Boeing completion specialist Greenpoint Technologies (Booth P108) comes to the show on the heels of winning completion contracts for two head-of-state Dreamliners (787-7 and -8) for an undisclosed customer. Greenpoint has more than 300,000 hours of engineering design and development experience on the revolutionary composite 787 airframe, according to Brett Neely, Greenpoint’s executive vice-president. Greenpoint is also currently “re-customizing” a head of state 787-8 that was scheduled for redelivery earlier this year. The execliner changed hands shortly before redelivery, and it’s now being “personalized to accommodate the new owner’s mission and requirements,” the company announced. The interior currently features a contemporary executive style with glossy wood veneer, white paneling and headliners, and patterned carpet in light neutral tones. Redelivery is now slated for early next year. Jinggong Global Jet Co. (Booth P602) of Zhejiang, China, a joint venture launched

last year between China’s Jinggong Group and international aviation services provider Global Jet, offers cabin design services through its partnership with Pegasus Design. Pegasus, with offices in London and Monaco, made its reputation in executive airliner interiors, but works on interiors

of any size airframe and is also known for its inventive exterior paint schemes. The Pegasus team believes designers should treat aircraft interiors “like jewels,” and that “for every specific requirement, a technical and artistic solution can be found.” At its booth here, Jinggong has iPads and large screens displaying an extensive

selection of images showcasing these design capabilities. Interiors capabilities are critical not only for completions and refurbishments, but for removal of customized interiors for heavy maintenance. U.S.based BBJ completions specialist Aloft AeroArchitects (Booth H107) completed late last year a six-year maintenance inspection

Greenpoint Technologies Dreamliner 787 lounge that required extensive removal and replacement of the interior of a head-of-state aircraft. At the conclusion of the inspection, company technicians and craftsmen demonstrated “the art of reinstalling the components with perfect fit and function the first time,” said John Eichten, Aloft’s senior v-p sales and marketing. “Every BBJ is an individual, custom work of art, and as experts on the BBJ platform, we’ve also become experts at managing the technical impacts of variance and individuality into our system of ensuring complete accuracy, efficiency and the highest degree of quality.” Aloft has also managed completions on more than 25 new executive airliners including the Embraer Lineage 1000 and Bombardier CRJ200, as well as its refurbishments and “numerous” interior reconfigurations of these aircraft, Eichten said. Aircraft owners often engage on-site representatives to oversee completions and refurbishment projects, a service Singapore’s Aviation Camo PTE (Booth P136) provides, in addition to its other maintenance management capabilities. The independent Continued Airworthiness Management Organization (CAMO) holds approvals from several international aviation registries, including the U.S. FAA, European Union’s EASA, and the Isle of Man, invaluable for its completions and refurbishment management services. Aviation Camo also offers completions and refurbishment consulting on issues regarding regulatory mandates and in-service maintenance requirements. Avion Pacific Ltd. (Booth P502) of China, a general aviation services provider with bases in Shenzhen, Beijing, Shanghai, Xian, Chengdu, Penglai and Zhuhai, also offers consulting services, including advising on acquisitions, completions and refurbishment. The company’s offerings also include aircraft financing, and combining these two areas of expertise can help buyers of preowned aircraft fund both purchase and refurbishment. o

Chinese operators installing Honeywell’s cabin electronics Honeywell Aerospace’s Ovation Select cabin management system and Aspire 200 satellite communications systems will be installed in Jiangsu Jet’s VIPconfigured Bombardier CRJ200. This marks the first time that Aspire 200 has been certified and installed on a Chinese operator’s business jet. The Aspire 200 system offers cabin voice and data service via Inmarsat’s SwiftBroadband satellite system at rates up to 650 kbps. It allows passengers to communicate with family, friends and coworkers from the moment they step on the plane to the moment they step off. Meanwhile, Ovation Select allows passengers to control aspects of the aircraft, such as lighting, temperature, video and audio streaming, in-flight Wi-Fi and the water system. Approximately 150 business aircraft already have the cabin management system installed. While ABACE show visitors at the Honeywell exhibit (Booth P336) will be able to interact with Ovation Select, they also will be able to see its Primus Epic integrated avionics and Primus Elite avionics, installed on the Embraer Lineage 1000E and Legacy 650 (respectively) aircraft on the static display here. Primus Epic offers integrated communication, air traffic management and navigation functions for owners, pilots and operators, as well as offering features such as synthetic vision. The avionics displays XM graphical weather data, Jeppesen electronic charts and

maps as well as video, and is available as a retrofit option for in-service Legacy 600 aircraft. The displays have replaced older cathode ray tubes with liquid crystal displays. Other technology on display at Honeywell’s booth includes the GoDirect services platform and its TPE331 turboprop engine. China’s Potential

According to Andy Gill, Honeywell Aerospace’s senior director for business aviation in the Asia Pacific region, prospects for the sector’s growth in China are still strong. He told AIN that Chinese authorities have been consulting with the industry as to how changes in airspace organization and management might improve access for business aircraft. “I’m seeing a pick up in the pace at which they [Chinese officials] want to see change. They recognize that business aircraft need to be able to operate in lower airspace below 3,000 meters [9,843 feet],” he said. “China is a big part of the industry’s growth in this part of the world, and I’m very bullish about it.” In 2016, Honeywell achieved completed the first installation for a Chinese operator of its JetWave connectivity solution for larger aircraft. “Consumers in this part of the world are very interested in this type of technology. CAAC unveils a genav expansion plan The Chinese government is rolling out a two-year pilot project designed to expand general aviation across four regions in China, including some of the more populated areas. Recently announced by the

Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), the plan involves efforts to improve efficiency, services and regulations in the Northeastern, Eastern, Northwest and Xinjiang regions.

“Efforts must be made to break through the current operation modes, consolidate and streamline flows, build a system-wide platform, improve management service, make innovations and allow

mistakes, so as to achieve outcomes that can be copied and popularized,” the CAAC said. In the Northeast region, officials will work to simplify the business license process, regulatory oversight for noncommercial activities and security requirements for general aviation airports. The plan in this region also includes adding

general aviation airports and fee policies that are specific to general aviation, as well as changing the agency’s evaluation of non-commercial general aviation accident and incident safety data. In the Eastern region, the pilot project would establish a general aviation service platform, including network support and extended services, as well as develop administration offices to provide integrated government services. Additionally, the plan focuses on expansion of drones with research and flight test initiatives, including a specified zone for test-flight-based equipment with ground-based surveillance. In the Northwest, the plan would introduce surveillance and service capabilities for low altitudes, integrating civilian and military information and control measures. And in the Xinjiang region, the plan also targets bolstering tourism, permitting air-tour operations over a 40-km (nearly 25 mile) radius with CAAC authorization. “This is a very encouraging move from the the CAAC and one that will benefit the business and general aviation industries in Greater China,” said Kevin Wu, Asian Business Aviation Association (AsBAA) vice chairman. The association hailed the plan for building on its long-term efforts to foster the development of business and general aviation throughout Greater China. “From this announcement we expect to see further cooperation between associations like AsBAA…and the CAAC, with a view to working together in simplifying regulatory oversight and creating win-win outcomes for the private and public sectors.” The plan marks the latest step by Chinese authorities to boost the sector as it slowly frees up airspace and eases operating restrictions. General aviation has remained a key goal in its “five-year plans,” with the most recent target, according to the CAAC, “to vigorously promote the development of general aviation by building more infrastructure, putting in place a standard system, continuously improving the operating environment and expanding service areas.” Earlier this month, the CAAC outlined its targets for its 13th five-year plan: more than 500 general airports and 5,000 general aviation aircraft, with the total flight hours reaching 2 million. o

The newest offering from Jeppesen consolidates flight planning, crew scheduling, runway performance and more in one product.

Jeppesen Operator app combines multiple roles Boeing subsidiary Jeppesen (Booth P516) is well known for providing aeronautical charts and flight planning products, but also offers a variety of other services. Now it has combined all of these product lines in a new singlesource software solution called Jeppesen Operator. The main functions included in Operator are flight planning, trip planning, runway performance, weight-andbalance, crew scheduling, and management and reporting. The Operator project started more than six years ago, when Mike McCready joined the company and took a look at all of Jeppesen’s varied products to try to figure out how they could be developed for the future. Jeppesen has offered flight planning for decades, having purchased Lockheed’s DataPlan service in 1989, and it also is in the international trip-planning business, in addition to publishing aeronautical data and, more recently, developing mobile apps to display that data. “This was a grand opportunity to write a small White Paper,” McCready recalled. “I called it ‘Flight Department in a Box.’ I looked at all the Jeppesen services and products and realized that Jeppesen could be in a position to bring a single-source solution [to the market]. It’s a platform to run a flight operation.” To gauge industry interest and obtain feedback, Jeppesen formed a customer advisory board in 2011. “We started refining what the product should look like,” he said, “and what the software should do.” The next step was to make sure there were enough internal resources to make the new product possible. “Over the years there was lot of work and interviews,” he said. “The customer advisory board gave us a lot of

direction.” The board included private jet flight departments and commercial charter passenger and cargo operators. Jeppesen’s international trip planning (IPT) team was key to a fundamental aspect of Operator: supporting professional schedulers and dispatchers that can do much of this work themselves, provided they are given the right tools, such as Operator. The software did need input from the IPT team, but the software’s users should not be dependent on the team to set up and release flights for their operations. “We found a way of doing that through using flight planning,” said McCready. When creating a flight plan, all the requirements of the flight must be met, so Operator then creates a queries database and from that a checklist for the trip, he explained. The checklist outlines items that the user—perhaps a pilot in a small operation or a scheduler or dispatcher— must either obtain or check. For example, an international trip might require a navigation permit. Operator not only specifies this requirement but includes information that will help the user satisfy the requirement, such as contact information for securing the navigation permit. Behind the scenes, however, the Jeppesen IPT team stands ready to assist. “We know it’s going to take people time to get comfortable with that, and we built in a concierge button,” McCready said. “We want to provide the expertise of the team that you have access to through software.” Jeppesen understands that some private jet operators may fly infrequently to a complicated international destination such as China and need help, or a large charter operator might be busy and wants to offload some

of this work. “We still have our IPT team there to support you,” he said. “We built that functionality into the system to make it do-it-yourself. But we’re not going to forget you.” Jeppesen isn’t trying to replicate what other software providers have created for operations and trip-planning software, and one of Operators big differentiators is a tie-in with BoldIQ,

the creator of the Astro platform and its Solver optimization engine. “We’ve worked with them and helped them refine Astro,” he said, “and we’re in the process of building in the optimization piece so we can provide the Solver module for our customers. It will still have a single user interface, but Astro and Solver run in the background.” Solver helps operators optimize resources (aircraft, crew, schedules, etc.) to make the operation as efficient as possible and also to help effect a recovery when something unexpected happens, such as an aircraft stuck because of a maintenance issue, sick pilot or other unplanned event. “It’s quite amazing,” McCready said, “and it’s saving customers 10 to 20 percent due to increased utilization.” The BoldIQ features weren’t available in the initial release of Operator but will be deployed later this year. Customers will be able to subscribe to Operator and

all of its capabilities, or pay more for Operator plus the BoldIQ features. The runway performance, weight-and-balance and other Operator features are all Jeppesen-developed. Operator will also integrate with third-party programs such as Camp Systems maintenance tracking and financial and accounting systems. While Operator is cloudbased and runs via a browser on any computer, Jeppesen is planning to tie apps such as its Mobile Flitedeck together with Operator and develop other apps to enhance Operator’s performance. “It’s all about making sure we’re connected through the whole process,” McCready said. “How to bring flight planning, runway performance, weightand-balance, and make those talk with the trip-planning database so it’s easy to use. You don’t have to be a six-year-trained international trip planner. You’ll be able to execute on trip plans and fly around the world.” o

Friendly customer service has long been a hallmark of Castle & Cooke. The FBO service provider has three locations in the U.S. that cater to Asian traffic, including at Los Angeles-area Van Nuys Airport (left).

Castle & Cooke FBOs see rise in Asian traffic As an ABACE attendee and exhibitor for the past six years, Tony Marlow, vice president of aviation operations and business development with U.S. FBO operator Castle & Cooke Aviation (Booth P531), has seen a great change in the level of showgoers’ business aviation understanding. Back in 2011, he spent much of his time at Hongqiao explaining the function of an FBO—or fixed based operation—to members of China’s fledgling business aviation industry. “Today there is much more awareness of what an FBO is, what it does, and what service it can provide,” he said. Back then, Marlow recalls, he mainly described the services at the company’s Honolulu, Hawaii location, which offers a friendly oasis in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, ideal for quick refueling service along with U.S. Customs, immigration and agricultural clearance as well as international trash disposal. Large-cabin aircraft can be processed and depart in approximately half an hour, according to Marlow. At its Hawaii facility, which is one of three service providers at Honolulu International Airport, Marlow has noted a recent increase in flights from

Asia. “I would say that over the course of the year, we’ve probably seen about a 30 percent increase in flights from the region through our FBO. Whether the traffic has increased or we’ve just gained a little bit of the market share, that I don’t know for sure. But for us, we’re seeing more frequent flights.”

Either way, he attributes much of that increase in aircraft activity from China, Australia, Japan and Indonesia to his company’s participation in ABACE and the ability to meet directly with customers from the region. To cope with increasing activity, the company recently added two additional

customer service representatives and two more full-time line service technicians to its staff. Yet with the advent of U.S. Customs service two years ago at Los Angelesarea Van Nuys Airport, where Castle & Cooke operates one of its two mainland U.S. FBOs, non-stop flights using ultralong-range business jets now have the option of avoiding the congestion at Los Angeles International. Marlow has also seen increases in flights arriving from the Asia Pacific region at Van Nuys. Once customers clear customs, immigration and quarantine at the airport’s facility, which is attached to the Signature Flight Support FBO, their aircraft are moved to the Castle & Cooke campus. It recently underwent a $12 million upgrade with the addition of a new 3,716-sq-m (40,000-sq-ft) hangar, a 139-sq-m (1,500-sq-ft) transient passenger lounge and two acres of ramp space. In addition to its standard level of upscale amenities, the FBO also offers a VIP facility known as “7501,” which includes its own gate entrance and dedicated ramp space directly off the taxiway. The private building includes a large conference room, reception desk, cocktail bar, fully functional kitchen with industrial refrigerators, and lounge areas for large or small groups. The company’s third FBO is located in Everett, Washington, at Snohomish County Airport/Paine Field. It offers a U.S. entry port into the Seattle area, with U.S. Customs, immigration and agriculture inspection services. The location can handle virtually any aircraft up to a Boeing 747. One recent change by the company is the selection of Avfuel as its fuel provider in all three of its locations. “For Hawaii in particular and the Asia market, their contract fuel program is very important,” Marlow told AIN, adding that he looks forward to participating in the Michigan-based fuel supplier’s marketing opportunities. The Honolulu facility was also recently named the Corporate Aircraft Association’s preferred location at the airport, and can now participate in that organization’s contract fuel pricing program for members. o

Zetta Jet showing rapid growth in trans-Pacific charter market by Charles Alcock Since launching in August 2015, Singapore-based Zetta Jet has quickly established itself as one of the fastest growing charter flight providers in the Asia Pacific region. The Chinese market has been a critical driver of the private company’s growth. The most recent expansion came in late December when Zetta Jet (Chalet 7) agreed to merge with fellow Singapore private aviation company Asia Aviation Company, along with U.S. aircraft management specialist Advanced Air Management. The acquisitions will expand Zetta Jet’s international reach, as well as service offerings. Zetta Jet will remain headquartered in Singapore and merge operations with Asia Aviation Company under the core Zetta Jet Pte Ltd. brand. Advanced Air Management, which is based at the Los Angeles-area airport Van Nuys, will be renamed Zetta Jet USA. The group will expand its aircraft management portfolio under the name Zetta Jet Management.

Geoffery Cassidy will continue to lead Zetta Jet as managing director, based in Singapore, while Matthew Walter is to remain director of sales and James Seagrim director of operations. Walter and Seagrim are based in Zetta’s office in California. “The merger of both companies under Zetta Jet is a significant milestone, which will greatly strengthen our value proposition as the world’s first truly personalized private airline,” Cassidy said. In less than two years, the company has since expanded to a fleet of 12 Bombardier Global 5000s and 6000s and four Challenger 650s that are averaging 100 flight hours a month. Asia Aviation, based at Seletar Airport in Singapore, provides a range of aircraft management, charter and flight department services. Advanced Air Management has concentrated on managing longrange business jets. Back in early November 2016, Zetta Jet signed a $129 million deal to lease four Bombardier

Challenger 650s from China’s Min sheng Financial Leasing, which bought the 12-seat twinjets from the Canadian manufacturer. The new aircraft, which will supplement its larger Bombardier Global 5000 and 6000 aircraft, are now being operated out of the company’s North American hub in Los Angeles. The Global 5000 and 6000 cabins can seat up to 14 passengers and can be reconfigured to provide beds for between five and seven people. The aircraft feature Rockwell Collins’s Venue cabin management system and Bombardier Wave wireless connectivity package, based on Honeywell’s JetWave hardware and Inmarsat’s Ka-band JetConnex service. The cockpit is built around Bombardier’s Vision flight deck with a synthetic vision system and MultiScan radar as standard equipment, as well as an optional enhanced vision head-up display. According to Zetta Jet, it is the only Part 135 charter operator approved by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration to fly in the polar regions. This allows it to plan shorter routes for many flights between the U.S. and Asia, avoiding fuel stops. The company also has made significant investments in outfitting its aircraft cabins. It recruits cabin crew from leading aviation and hospitality industry groups, providing training at Switzerland’s École hôtelière de Lausanne. Flight attendants use luxury products such as Christofle silverware, Hermès Egyptian linens and Salon champagne. As well as individual flights, Zetta Jet customers can buy 100hour blocks of charter time at discounted rates and guaranteed availability. This allows clients to switch between the Global 5000 and 6000 models. o

Sky Services is China’s bizav gateway to Italy by Charles Alcock Asian business aircraft operators planning trips to Italy may well want to meet ground

handling specialist Sky Services at the ABACE show. The company, which is making its first

appearance at ABACE (Booth P537), has built a network of FBOs at almost a dozen Italian airports over the past two decades and can provide handling supervision at more than 40 airports in total. The most recent addition to the chain is Siena Airport in the Tuscany region. Last year, Sky Services won an international

tender for the right to manage the airport and to handle business aviation traffic at the airport through the end of 2035. The company already has FBOs at the following airports: Milan Linate and Malpensa, Venice, Treviso, Verona, Rome Ciampino, Naples Capodichino, Bari, Brindisi and Salerno on the Amalfi coast.

At Siena Ampugnano Airport, Sky Services is overseeing modernization work to a VIP terminal. Unusually, Siena has about 180 hectares (445 acres) of space and so has plenty of room for private aircraft to park for prolonged periods of time. Sky Services is offering customers the chance to use Siena as a base for visits to Italy, since it can be very hard to get longer-term parking at other airports in the country. Hangar accommodation also is available. Privately-owned Sky Services has made significant investments in facilities and décor at its FBOs. These all include rest areas and work stations for both crew and passengers, as well as its own Sky Cafés serving food and beverages. The company also operates its own catering division, called Sky Cuisine, which can provide an extensive choice of high quality inflight meals. Attractive Fuel Prices

According to Sky Services, the company has negotiated competitive pricing for Jet-A fuel at multiple Italian airports. Its fuel department can provide bulk pricing based on multiple trips or for ad hoc purchases. Through a new partnership with the Avcard payment program offered by World Fuel Services, Sky Services, which is now part of the Air Elite FBO network, offers its own branded Sky Card. Clients can use this to settle all invoices for services including handling, fuel, flight planning, hotels and ground transportation. It is fully integrated with the Avcard network and can be used at over 7,500 locations worldwide. The company has its own ground handling equipment at all locations, and provides extensive training for its personnel. It also employs a team of CAMO and EASA Part 145approved mechanics who can provide emergency aircraft-onground support at any of its FBOs. Another component of the Sky Services portfolio is its flight academy, which provides pilot training in Milan, Naples and Brindisi. According to the company, it offers Chinese operators full support with all aspects of flying to, from and within Italy, including flight permits and slots. Through agreements with handlers in other parts of Europe, it can also offer preferential arrangements for further travel. In 2016, Sky Services supported almost 40,000 movements, which represented an increase in traffic of 6 percent compared with 2015. o

Now, there’s a focus on [capabilities] the market needs, what they’re going to actually use them for.” So with the XLS, he said a similar, step-by-step increase in the support capability would follow, as the market allows, “and we’ve got the full support of the [Textron] group too.” That includes Singapore, so service support can be brought in relatively quickly. Textron Aviation has three local Chinese support technicians in the country as well.

and rich contact base and reputation among government officials and other industry officials. We’re often consulted and meet with CAAC [for example].” At ABACE, Textron has on static display a Citation XLS and a Caravan, with something new, having “specific product presentations at our chalet, three or four different presentations”— including on the new Citations. “We think these are going to be game changers in terms of how people think of GA.” Last but not least, Schultz discussed the burgeoning market for small training aircraft

While large-cabin, ultra-long-range jets have grabbed most of the interest among Asia Pacific buyers, versatile utility turboprops such as the Beechcraft King Air Series twins (left) and the Caravan single (below) have multiple roles waiting as China builds infrastructure. That leaves Textron Aviation senior v-p of business development for China, Bill Schultz (lower left), optimistic for the future of his company’s products.

Sales have been going well, senior v-p business development for China Bill Schultz told AIN. “We don’t publish numbers, but generally speaking what we’re seeing in China is that the government has gotten behind the growth of GA, especially in relation to the latest [13th] five-year plan—which calls for 500 airports by 2020,” supported by the devolution of power to local governments to approve such small airports. “We have seen an encouraging amount of activity, and people interested in establishing special operations and regional commuters, for example.” So the trend is continuing, he added, despite the “austerity” drive by the government that started a couple of years ago to root out corruption. “That’s like a sweet spot for us,” said Schultz, “for example, we have seen a particularly strong response for the King Air and 208 [Cessna Caravan].” He noted that these more utilitarian aircraft typically play a big part in developing countries, particularly where regional road and rail networks are lacking. And “one

absolutely gorgeous. For example that can open up the possibility of a regular service with a King Air 350.” He said the Caravan can be used in many different regions to develop air services, and it will prove itself in China’s Western Province. Textron Aviation has two joint ventures in China to produce aircraft; the Caravan in Shijiazhuang, just south of Beijing, and the Citation XLS in Zhuhai, near Hong Kong. The former is at a more advanced

year for the 350,” he said, indicating that the fleet is growing in the region. He anticipates that Citation jets will be a major focus now that the Latitude is in service and the Longitude is approaching certification next year, followed the large-cabin Hemisphere after that. He said that “the economics are right” with these Citations and expects them to sell well in China. “They’re getting lots of attention. We’re seeing a transition in the thought process [of buyers]—before,

Schultz’s office is in Shanghai, and he shares it with two other Textron subsidiaries, Bell Helicopter and Textron Finance. Beyond that, Textron has interests in China outside aviation, which gives the group additional depth of knowledge, he said. “We have a strong presence in China with tool and special-vehicle companies, a manufacturing facility for automotive fuel tanks [and so on]. So few aviation companies have as much presence in China. We have a lot of group expertise in the market here, a deep

such as the company’s venerable Cessna 172. “CAFUC [The Civil Aviation Flying University of China] is already operating more than 100,” he said. Aviation in China is growing very differently to the way it grew in the U.S. Here, it started with the airlines, and is filling in now at the lower levels, starting with the large-cabin bizjets. But he noted what is really holding the industry back is having enough trained people. There is a “need for talent, a need to train,” he concluded. o

New Tianjin maintenance center marks Bombardier’s stake in China by Charles Alcock Bombardier’s newly opened service center at Tianjin in northeastern China is testament to the Canadian aircraft manufacturer’s strong commitment to the local business aviation market. The 9,290-square-meter (100,000 sq-ft) facility has been constructed over the past two years through a joint venture with the Tianjin Airport Economic Area authority. According to Bombardier, its new Global 7000 jet will have strong appeal in China and the wider Asia Pacific region due to its exceptional range and cabin space (see below). Its existing Global 5000 and 6000 models, along with the Challenger 650 and 605, also have contributed to the company’s claim that it has achieved a 35 percent share of the 114 business aircraft delivered to the region in the 2014-16 period (tying it for first place with Gulfstream). Overall, there are now around 280 Bombardier business jets based in the region—the vast majority of them being Globals and Challengers. “The Tianjin center will strongly complement the role of our customer service representatives on the ground in China, as well as our service center in Singapore,” Brad Nolen, Bombardier Business Aircraft’s director of product strategy and market development told AIN. It will open with capability to support Global aircraft, and by year-end this will be extended to include Challengers and the smaller Learjets. Bombardier is training Chinese mechanics at its maintenance facilities in Singapore and North America. The manufacturer already has regional support offices in Hong Kong and Shanghai, as well as parts and component-repair and overhaul facilities in Beijing, Hong Kong and Singapore. Apart from China—where much of Bombardier’s installed base of aircraft resides—the company has seen significant growth in India, Australia and

Singapore. “Even if Chinese economic growth has slowed somewhat, it’s still at 6.5 percent, and there is still very low penetration of the potential market for business aircraft,” stated Nolan. “For the most part, customers in this region need aircraft with range of more than 4,000 nm so that they can make trips such as connecting directly to the Middle East and then on to Europe,” Nolan said. “It’s all about access to global markets.” According to Bombardier, the new Global 7000 has the only true four-zone cabin with the separate crew rest area necessary for flights of up to 12-to-13 hours. The available space also makes room for up to six beds on the aircraft, and this, claimed Nolan, has resulted in Asian customers being among the early orders for the 7000, which is due to enter service in the second half of 2018. On March 4, the second Global 7000 flight-test vehicle (FTV2) achieved its first flight. The first flight test vehicle started the certification campaign back in November as Bombardier seeks to catch up on a program that has been delayed by two years. Long Legs and Fleet of Foot

The Global 7000 will offer range of up to 7,400 nm (13,705 km) carrying eight passengers and cruising at Mach 0.85, allowing for nonstop flights such as London-toSingapore and Dubai-to-New York City. High-speed cruise will be Mach 0.925. FTV2, which Bombardier has dubbed “The Powerhouse,” is being used to test aircraft systems, including propulsion, electrical and mechanical. “We now have a flight-test vehicle dedicated to testing the aircraft’s systems,” explained François Caza, Bombardier’s product development vice president and chief engineer. “Data from FTV2 will supplement the successful results we have already obtained from the test rigs, including the integrated systems test and certification rig and, from the extensive flight testing of FTV1 to date. We are on track with our [revised] test program and we are very pleased with the progression and performance of our flight-test vehicles to date. The dedication and collaboration of our teams have shown were critical in achieving this significant milestone.” The production wing for the Global 7000 is now in final design and expected to be flying on a production-conforming airplane later this year. Bombardier cited issues related to the Global 7000 wing as a factor in its decision for a two-year program delay. Nolan concluded that long-standing difficulties associated with limitations on access to Chinese airports and airways for business aircraft is slowly being alleviated. “[For the Asian market] the next 12 months will be similar to 2016, which improved in the latter half of the year. In the longer term, we expect to see 700 more aircraft delivered to Greater China over the next 10 years,” he predicted. o

Jet Aviation milestone has ties to Asia Pacific by Ian Sheppard Jet Aviation (Booth H218), which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, continues to develop its presence in the Asia Pacific region through existing locations in Singapore, Hong Kong and Macau. The company was founded in Basel in 1967 and has grown to almost 30 facilities at airports all around the world staffed by almost 4,500 employees. It is now a wholly owned subsidiary of U.S. company General Dynamics. The most recent Asia Pacific developments saw its Hong Kong facility receive EASA approval for Gulfstream G650 maintenance (in February), while G650 approval was received from the Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department just before ABACE. This allows the company to provide line and base maintenance to G650s registered in the PRC, Macau and Hong Kong. “Our goal is to provide required business aviation services as close to demand as possible,” said Nigel Parker, managing director of Jet Aviation Hong Kong. Jet Aviation also has a 24/7 aircraft management and charter operation in Hong Kong that currently manages more than 30 aircraft (six of which are G650s), said Parker. According to John Riggir, v-p and general manager, Jet Aviation Singapore, the company has been busy adding G650, BBJ and ACJ approvals to its site capabilities in the region. He also reported that Jet Aviation Singapore had “set new records” over the past year. Meanwhile, in Europe, the Swiss company’s Basel facility has completed its first Split Scimitar Winglet (SSW) retrofit on a Boeing Business Jet (BBJ). In this case it was for a first-generation BBJ (which is based on the 737-700), with the work completed under an EASA Supplemental Type Certificate. The winglets, based on a design by Aviation Partners Inc. (API), increase the aircraft’s range by 2 percent. API is the exclusive provider of SSWs for all BBJ, BBJ2 and BBJ3 aircraft. “We have been working closely with personnel from Aviation Partners to gain experience and proficiency with the SSW retrofit,” said Jet Aviation senior v-p and general manager of its operations in Basel. “We look forward to supporting more Boeing

aircraft owners and operators with SSW retrofits in the future,” he added, “whether in conjunction with routine maintenance, an interior refurbishment, a green completion or as a standalone installation.” The company has been adding other capabilities at its Basel facility as well as the API winglet. Jet Aviation large-aircraft maintenance director, Estelle Thorin, noted that “Our new Honeywell APU overhaul system went live last year, and our refurbishment, modifications and upgrades division has been very active in new avionics upgrades and connectivity developments.” Completions

To summarize the company’s recent completions activities (covered in more detail in a separate report, see page 14), Jet Aviation accepted delivery of an ACJ330-200 for a Chinese customer in late 2016 for a VIP completion. The project is underway in the company’s Basel facility. In parallel, it is completing a BBJ1 for another Chinese customer. Jet Aviation recently delivered an ACJ330, which it said represents a number of technological “firsts,” including reductions in weight that allow the aircraft to have the “longest range of any VIP Airbus A330 completed to date.” The company said that it has experienced increased interest in Greater China with several current and potential customers being based here, along with increased interest from the Chinese-language media. At its booth here at ABACE, the company has a delegation of completions specialists who are ready to meet potential customers. They will also be demonstrating the company’s Jet Vision design app, which customers can upload to their mobile devices. 21 Years in Singapore

Jet Aviation first established its Asia Pacific headquarters at Singapore’s Seletar Airport in 1996, so it has been building momentum in the region for 21 years now. In 2014 it completed a major expansion at Seletar that almost tripled the size of its facility there, with the addition of a 54,000-sq-ft maintenance hangar. In 2015 the company completed an extensive refurbish-

Jet Aviation’s history in Asia Pacific dates back more than two decades, with its Singapore base (above) continuously adding new aircraft approvals to its service menu. The latest include the Gulfstream G650, the Boeing BBJ line and the Airbus ACJ family. The Swiss company’s Hong Kong facility (below left) is now an authorized line and base maintenance center for the ultra-long-range G650. Meanwhile, Jet Aviation Basel recently installed a set of split-scimitar winglets (below right) on a Boeing BBJ.

ment of its FBO, which provided ground handling for around 1,500 movements in 2015. Jet Aviation also offers handling at Singapore’s larger Changi International Airport. More Asia Pacific expansion came more recently with a new 43,000-sq-ft maintenance facility and hangar being opened in Macua last year. This now provides much needed extra capacity, given that Hong Kong International Airport, where Jet Aviation already has a significant maintenance and aircraft management operation, is very congested. Jet Aviation Macau last year won the public tender to operate a private aviation MRO business from Macau International Airport’s new purposebuilt hangar, with Jet Aviation signing a 10-year concession agreement with the Macau Airport Authority.

The company has leased half of the new 86,000-sq-ft hangar in addition to 11,000 sq ft of workshop and office space. Jet Aviation is adding Macau to its Dassault and Gulfstream authorized service center approvals and extending its EASA and FAA Part 145 approvals to cover Macau, gaining Part 145 approval for the Civil Aviation Authority of the Macao Special Administrative Region (AACM). When AIN visited the Hong Kong Business Aviation Center in early 2016, before last year’s ABACE event, Jet Aviation Hong Kong was finding the congestion at the airport caused considerable frustration, given its presence is in one of the HKBAC hangars, as it is a shared facility. The airport has since made many improvements, according to HKBAC, which has also been working to improve its

efficiency and better deal with its clients’ needs. The Macau facility is a welcome relief valve, which will become more useful with the opening of the Hong KongZhuhai-Macau causeway/tunnel in 2018. There is also the possibility that a third runway will be built at HKIA, but it is unlikely to be in place until 2023. Singapore remains the hub of Jet Aviation’s maintenance capability in Asia, however, holding approvals from the local civil aviation authority, as well as from the U.S., Europe, China, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Bermuda, the Cayman Islands and Australia. The facility mainly specializes in working on Gulfstream jets, as well as the Boeing Business Jet family and most Bombardier Challenger and Global Express types. o

Satcom Direct growing by upgrades, acquisitions by Ian Sheppard Satcom Direct (Booth H226) has helped revolutionize the communications capabilities of the typical business jet cabin over the past 20 years, since it was founded by Jim Jensen in Satellite Beach, Florida. It comes to ABACE after one of its most active years ever, with the launch of SD Pro, roll-out of the SD Wi-Fi Hub, plus the acquisition of Comsat, AircraftLogs and TrueNorth Avionics. Nathan Andrews, regional director for the Asia Pacific, who was appointed to the role last October after many years with the company, told AIN, “We are hoping to take on additional resources in Hong Kong and Australia this year” to help grow the business in the region. “The company has developed rapidly since 2013,” he added,

putting part of that down to aircraft owners wanting to upgrade, now that new capabilities are available. Although upgrades are proving popular, and Satcom Direct has a dedicated person in the region advising and assisting clients, Andrews said customers should plan “from the outset” to equip the aircraft at its entry into service. That way you have “a happier customer” and also a less frustrated service provider, he said. Either way, “We can sit down with the customer and their preferred MRO to plan the installation and provide them with the cabin Wi-Fi block diagram, breaking it down into multiple Wi-Fi zones for example. “Then, once we have a draft, we can hand it off to the engineering facility.” He said the

time to do the work can “vary widely, but recently we’ve seen a 12-month timeframe. The caveat is how soon the aircraft is going in for scheduled maintenance anyway,” as that would be the best time to do the work, “and how long it takes to get the avionics to them.” Getting on new aircraft platforms such as with Gulfstream is helping given that “now things are a lot more complex, with networks, equipment etc. The OEMs are recognizing it’s better to do the airframes earlier,” said Andrews. He noted the “great takeup rate” of the Satcom Direct Router and Wi-Fi Hub “and now we have TrueNorth too” offering the Optelity family of satcom systems. SD Pro has provided “an integrated flight operations platform bringing all the elements into one platform—connectivity, maintenance, automatic flight log and data links. You can avoid the pilot having to tally everything up as the data is taken straight off the cockpit avionics

Avinode apps right for Asia Swedish company Avinode, which hosts the Marketplace online platform for buying and selling air charter services, has taken a step closer to integrating its PayNode payment platform with its existing TripManager and SchedAero systems. Users can now create PayNode payment requests automatically with “just a few clicks” within their workflow, ready for emailing to a customer, said the company. PayNode was launched at NBAA 2016 in Orlando, Florida. Magnus Henriksson, global business director for PayNode, said: “We’ve had a highly positive response from brokers and operators to the launch of PayNode. The solution has been designed to target key pain points in their businesses: the need to work faster, to move large sums of money internationally at short notice and to get paid swiftly.” Henriksson said that manual processing consists of two separate transactions, “payer to broker and broker to operator.” The problem with this, he explained, is “the operator won’t take off until they have the money, and the broker won’t pay [the operator] until they have been paid.” He said that PayNode “is the only platform that ensures

Annika Abraham, Avinode managing director, EMEAA

brokers and operators receive payment within 24 hours following a flight, which is a huge cash flow benefit.” The system is based on transaction fees, not any sort of up-front or membership fee. Henriksson said, “The integration of PayNode with Avinode TripManager and SchedAero ensures funds can flow through the links in the payment chain and into our customers’ bank accounts more effortlessly than ever.” He said that PayNode is to the charter marketplace what PayPal is to eBay. “The technology is meant to bring business

aviation into the 21st century by adopting modern technology.” Payment was an area Avinode had been exploring for some time, “especially since 2014 when World Fuel [through its subsidiary MultiService] bought a majority share of Avinode,” said Henriksson. MultiService is a specialist in electronic payment technology, so it was a turning point when it became an Avinode sister company. According to Henriksson, the day is coming soon when photocopying IDs and the fronts and backs of credit cards will be eliminated with PayNode. Users need not be members of Avinode or its SchedAero sister company to take advantage of the system. “Our focus initially is EEA [European Economic Area] countries and North America,” he told AIN, adding that the transaction side would be brought in gradually beginning this year. New Asia Head

Reflecting the company’s commitment to the Asia Pacific region, it recently appointed Annika Abraham managing director, EMEAA (Europe, Middle East, Africa & Asia). She had worked at Avinode (Booth 525) for six years as CFO and

Satcom Direct is all about consolidating connectivity, blending cockpit, maintenance and cabin entertainment platforms. Acquisitions have helped bring capability in-house.

to the server. So now you can open up the concept of connectivity much wider than the cabin, to operations, maintenance etc.” And these don’t impact the cabin (Live TV for example) as they don’t take up much bandwidth. Beyond Email

One thing people insist on now is “24/7 connectivity,” said Andrews, who noted, “the airlines are looking at that now, previously worked in financial roles at PricewaterhouseCoopers, Nordea and Volvo Business Services. “There is huge potential for business aviation in Asia to grow significantly over the coming years,” said Abraham. “In the past 24 months, there has been substantial growth in brokers throughout the region which has resulted in a steady increase in charter requests through the Avinode Marketplace. “This year, ABACE is a great opportunity to showcase the range of our products and services in the region,” she said. “Brokers will be able to demo our recently enhanced TripManager tool, which has been designed to help them identify their top customers and improve service. We will also be showing visitors the benefits of our payment platform, PayNode, which has been integrated across all Avinode Group systems.” Oliver King, acting CEO of Avinode Group, said: “Annika has been centrally involved in all investor discussions and oversees all commercial policies and membership agreements. We are delighted that she has accepted the offer to head up the international teams.” —I.S.

too.” He also predicted that data rates and bandwidth would continue to increase, driven by the increasing uptake of videoconferencing. “People use this a lot now, as you can really go beyond e-mail” “There is a general perception that Asian customers are tech savvy and connectivity hungry,” said Andrews. At ABACE this year Satcom Direct is focusing on its 20th anniversary “and what the evolution has been,” including explaining to customers and potential customers what the acquisition of TrueNorth Avionics (completed in December) is bringing to the business. With Satcom Direct’s services and equipment widely used in the U.S. and elsewhere, it is making Asia Pacific growth a priority. For example, Andrews told AIN in late March that the first Asia Pacific customer had signed up for the AircraftLogs web-based aircraft/crew scheduling service. The company believes it has the market pretty much covered as a reseller, with ViaSat, Inmarsat, Iridium, etc. “And we have just brought on Panasonic as well,” said Andrews. “It gives customers other options and continues our [service/platform] agnostic position, which also allows us to deliver the best solution for the customer depending on their operational requirements.” He suggested that China’s next step may be the addition of an air-ground system. “If the Chinese government wanted to get this done, they would…but one problem Asia may have [overall] is different regulatory regimes, unlike the U.S. and Europe. You can overfly half a dozen countries in a very short space of time—so that might be the biggest stumbling block. But China could do it—assuming there will be a staggering number of airframes eventually.” o

Embraer Executive Jets delivers a pair of milestone aircraft On March 31, Embraer Executive Jets (Chalet 4) handed over the first Phenom 100EV and, separately, the 400th Phenom 300 from its customer delivery center in Melbourne, Florida. These were two of six business jets delivered from the facility that same day, which marked the end of the first quarter. The milestone 100EV went to an undisclosed U.S. customer. A second Phenom 100EV is expected to be handed over to Toluca, Mexico-based operator Across later this month, Embraer said. The new light jet model, announced last year at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, is an upgraded Phenom 100

with a Prodigy Touch flight deck based on the Garmin G3000 and more powerful Pratt & Whitney Canada PW617F1-E engines. With 1,730 pounds of thrust each, the engines provide a cruise speed of 405 ktas and 15 percent more thrust at hot-and-high airports. Range is 1,178 nm with NBAA IFR reserves and four occupants. Its flight deck is touchscreencontrolled with larger HD displays, splitscreen capability and weather radar. Meanwhile, the the 400th Phenom 300 to roll off the production line went to EliteJets, a new Naples, Florida-based air charter firm that plans to start ondemand service next month. EliteJets

An undisclosed U.S. customer has taken delivery of the first Embraer Phenom 100EV.

also took delivery of another Phenom 300, S/N 403, on the same day, bringing its all-Embraer fleet to four of the light jets and one Legacy 500. EliteJets founder and CEO Daniel Randolph—who made his fortune by founding, and later selling, Personalization Mall—told AIN that he decided to get into the air charter game after his personal experiences in flying charter. “Most charter outfits are using old airplanes, and it’s outrageous what is being charged to fly on newer

aircraft such as Phenom 300s,” he said. “We can do better.” The first Phenom 300 rolled off the production line in December 2009, and the light jet has been the best-selling business aircraft for the past four years. All Phenoms are now being assembled at the company’s Melbourne facility. Here at ABACE 2017, Embraer Executive Jets is showing a Phenom 300, Legacy 500 and Lineage 1000, reflecting its products that range from light jets to bizliners. o

Comlux inks new deals; seeks an Asian partner The Comlux business aviation services group on Monday announced the expansion its presence in the growing Asian market with deals involving both charter and aircraft completions activity. Meanwhile, here at the ABACE show, the Europe-based company (Booth P324) is stepping up its search for a prospective partner in China. It already has offices in Hong Kong and Macau. Comlux’s Kazakhstan aircraft management and charter operation Comlux KZ has just taken delivery of the first Sukhoi Business Jet (SBJ) to be certified by the European Aviation Safety Agency. The interior for the 19-seat aircraft was completed at the Indianapolis facility of the group’s Comlux Completion division on behalf of its Kazakhstan-based owner, Kazakhmys PLC Corporation. Separately, Comlux Completion announced that it has been commissioned by a pair of Asian clients to comprehensively

refurbish a Bombardier Global 6000 and a Boeing Business Jet (BBJ). In the case of the undisclosed Global 6000 operator, this is the second time it has turned to Comlux Completion. The Global 6000’s new interior will feature a new design that the company described as “luxurious,” including all new soft furnishings, seats, metallic treatments, fixtures, wood, stone counter tops and decorative trim. The facility is currently working on a Global Express aircraft for a Chinese customer. The work on the BBJ will include various cabin reconfigurations, including the addition of a specially designed bed that pulls out from the cabin’s side ledge to allow more passengers to sleep. The aircraft is owned by an undisclosed client and is being managed by Hong Kong-based Sino Jet, whose CEO Jenny Lau was closely involved in selecting the completions center.

The backlog of work at Comlux Completion has been growing after a busy 2016 that saw it involved in three major completions—an Airbus ACJ330, a BBJ and the SBJ. The Indianapolis facility also has been handling extensive maintenance work on three BBJs and an ACJ. ‘The Right Business Tool’

The Russian-made SBJ has been completed with a contemporary interior design, consisting of a VIP area at the front with club-four seating across from a side-facing sofa and then 15 first-class seats in a 2+1 (threeabreast) layout. The SBJ is the first of its type to be available for private charter services. “The SBJ has been delivered on quality and on time and as per the highest standard of the industry,” commented said Kazakhmys CEO Eduard Ogay. “The addition of the SBJ to our corporate fleet successfully operated by Comlux KZ allows a large number of our company executives and employees to travel all together efficiently and in full comfort. It’s the right business tool for our company.” The SBJ is the first of its type to be equipped with a corporate

cabin configuration and also approved by European authorities. “This made it especially challenging given that the completions center is in the U.S., for an aircraft without an FAA type certificate, showing once again how Comlux can adapt and find solutions in any environment to best serve our customers,” said Comlux Completion CEO Scott Meyer. “The Comlux team has performed an outstanding job on the aircraft interior, including flight testing and certification under full EASA oversight. Thanks to our cabin innovation research center, we have demonstrated our ability to complete new aircraft interiors beyond ACJs and BBJs.” According to Comlux group chairman and CEO Richard Gaona, the Asia Pacific market has great potential for business aviation. “We could do much more here if we had a local partner, and especially in China,” he told AIN. “Private jet operations are still fairly new here. There are huge opportunities, but it’s going to take time. Second-hand aircraft sell quite fast in China, but longerterm projects for new aircraft are complicated.”

JETSOLUTION NOW OFFERS JETCREW SERVICE PROGRAM JetSolution Aviation Group has launched its JetCrew International Services aircrew training and placement service, which combines training in the “ultimate luxurious cabin experiences” with placement services for cabin crewmembers. JetCrew joins JetSolution’s JetSales and JetParts as one of the company’s three core divisions. JetSolution has also expanded with a new office in Australia, where it will offer integrated aviation and yacht services for Australasia-based clients. To further serve cabin services clients, JetSolution (Booth H225) has hired Jessie Pan as training specialist. With more than 20 years of experience in cabin services training for VIP clients, Pan has studied hospitality business management at the University of Birmingham in the UK

Comlux holds delivery positions for corporate jet versions of Boeing’s new Max family of narrowbody airliners and Airbus’s Neo models. These bizliners will feature new, fuel efficient engines, and Gaona’s team already is offering these to Chinese clients. The first of the new aircraft could be delivered to Comlux, which would handle the interior completions, by the end of 2018. “We can get these aircraft into service sooner than Airbus or Boeing,” he said. “Our customers could have the aircraft in service by September 2019, instead of late 2020.” Last November, the group’s Fly Comlux management/charter arm launched a new operation that will make flights available in its own fleet, as well as in aircraft owned by other companies. The new OneAbove program started with an alliance with U.S.-based Polaris Aviation Solutions as its first third-party operator, with the Comlux charter sales team set to market flights in its Gulfstream G550 and Boeing Business Jet, based near New York. Comlux intends to add other partner operators around the world, including in Asia. o

and advanced studies at the Institut Villa Vierrefeu in Switzerland. “Through progressive development of JetSolution,” said Jackie Wu, JetSolution group president and aviation specialist, “we strive to add value to each aircraft and our relationship with individual clients, promoting safety and the comfort level of each air journey. Considering the rapid growth of aviation in greater China, [along] with the increasing demand of aviation personnel, JetCrew inherits the excellence of JetSolution to offer aircrew services, [and] gather world-class elites for dedicated and outstanding services for our clients.” With its headquarters in Hong Kong, JetSolution has regional offices in the United o States, Malaysia and the Middle East.

Flying Colours has added new personnel in Singapore, bringing its workforce there to a total of 18.

Future is looking bright for Flying Colours Flying Colours Corp. (Booth H119) has seen its business take off in the Asia Pacific region, experiencing 40 percent annual growth at its Singapore interiors facility. Based at the Bombardier Business Aircraft Service Center at Seletar Airport, since it opened three years ago the unit has handled many projects— including more than 50 in the past year alone. “We are excited by this year’s progress,” said Flying Colours executive vice president Eric Gillespie. “The facility has been extremely busy since we launched, and we’ve seen a notable increase in demand and requests over the last 12 months. Indications are that this will continue into the future, too.” Cabinetry refinishing and soft furnishing refurbishment and repairs have comprised most of the work. Flying Colours has also been proving mobile repairs for customers in the region. The customer base has included operators, private individuals and corporations. A maturing market in the region is helping to drive the

growth, Gillespie said, noting that more customers are seeking the value of refurbishing and repairing interiors. “The market is getting more sophisticated and savvy aircraft owners and buyers are realizing that refurbishment and overhaul can be a good choice for their needs,” he said. Keeping up with the growth, the company has added four more personnel to the Singapore location, bringing the total workforce there to 18. In addition to its work at the Singapore facility, the Flying Colours North American facilities have redelivered five completely overhauled aircraft to the customers in the Asia Pacific region. These include two VIPoutfitted Bombardier CRJ200s that Resorts World of Malaysia is operating to transport customers between resorts. Sparkle Roll also took delivery of two aircraft configured for corporate shuttle and another in executive VIP format. Sparkle Roll has two more aircraft in the pipeline. In addition to the interior overhauls, the aircraft underwent extensive maintenance. o

Leasing could be key to realizing bizav’s potential According to a new report from U.S.-based aircraft financier Global Jet Capital, approximately 450 midsize to large-cabin private jets worth more than $22 billion combined were delivered to the Asia Pacific region between 2012 and 2016. The company noted that those aircraft each typically cost between $25 million and $75 million and up to 80 percent of the funding to purchase them came from external financing. Over the past five years, China accounted for 57 percent of all aircraft deliveries in these categories to Asia Pacific customers. And as Global Jet Capital reports a growing number of financing inquiries from the region, it is increasing its local staff to meet demand, starting with the recent appointment of Violet Kwek as its sales director for Greater China. “Over the next ten years or so, as many as 90 private jets [in these categories] are set to be delivered to Asia every year, which is over

STEP UP THIS WAY Airliner-derived business jets have long been the preferred avenue for exploring private aviation in Asia Pacific. Airbus’s ACJ319 is among the most popular. Here at ABACE, visitors can step up to examine it up-close.

LHT gets CAAC nod for ACJ work Lufthansa Technik (LHT has received Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) approval for Airbus A319 maintenance. The approval expands the German company’s service offerings for Chinese B-registered A319 bizliners, including line and heavy maintenance service. “This approval is a milestone for us as the A319 is a popular aircraft type in Greater China,” said Thomas Decher, vice president of VIP maintenance and

modifications for Lufthansa Technik (Booth H316). “It helps us to further extend our MRO services for VIP customers from that region. I am sure that we will create significant additional business thanks to the approval.” The company already has begun a six-year check of a B-registered ACJ319 at its facility in Hamburg, Germany. Lufthansa Technik Group had originally outfitted the aircraft with a VIP cabin for a Chinese customer. Along with the heavy

17 percent of the world’s total,” she said. “The region has been taking a bigger share of global deliveries and is a key market for us, where we are growing our team to help capitalize on the huge opportunities.” Seventy-one percent of China’s business jet fleet consists of midsize or larger business jets, while that number is even higher for Hong Kong (92 percent) and Singapore (75 percent). “A number of the Asian economies are currently some of the best performing in the world, and we expect this to contribute to strong growth in the business aviation sector here,” said Kwek. “This, combined with the fact that the market has a high concentration on midsize to heavy jets, makes this region very attractive for us, and we anticipate enjoying strong growth here over the next few years.” With that growth, the company (Booth P302) is anticipating an increased interest in operating leases in the region.

The operating lease, which is still relatively uncommon in Asia, is a financing tool where clients can enter into a sale and lease-back agreement for their pre-owned aircraft, identify an aircraft for a lender to purchase, or assign the lender their purchase contract for their new, onorder aircraft. In each situation, the client does not take ownership of the aircraft, but has full use of it as if they did. Instead of a large downpayment, the client supplies a more modest security deposit and returns the aircraft to the lender at the end of the lease term. According to Global Jet Capital, the benefits of the arrangement include better allocation of capital since the lender can fund up to 100 percent of the aircraft cost; no residual value risk as the aircraft ownership shifts to the lender, allowing the lessee to simply walk away at the end of the lease; certainty of cost, by which the lessee will not have to worry about any additional costs incurred while waiting to sell the aircraft; flexibility in allowing a client to transition more easily between aircraft at the end of the lease; and possible accounting and tax benefits. o

maintenance check, the aircraft is undergoing a cabin refurbishment. The maintenance event requires removal of the VIP outfitting and reinstallation. In addition to the A319, Lufthansa Technik holds CAAC approvals to perform heavy maintenance on other Airbus and Boeing aircraft, including the A340, A318 and B747. Lufthansa Technik further has outfitted more than 30 VIP aircraft for customers in Greater China.

At ABACE this year, Lufthansa Technik and designer Mercedes-Benz Style are showcasing the final version of VIP cabin design for the first time to a broader Asian audience. Lufthansa Technik’s VIP and Special Mission Aircraft Services engineering firm worked with Mercedes-Benz Style to refine the initial design concept to meet airworthiness and certification requirements. A virtual 3D presentation and scaled physical 3D model, along with material samples, are on display this week at the show. The cabin features a

modern design that incorporates the latest communications and other interior technologies. A unique helix structure providing a dynamic spiral layout is the central them of the design and extends from the entrance to the bedroom. This approach provides new independent spatial zones without the typical arrangement of lining and wall elements. The design includes an open entrance area, a kitchen and VIP lavatory. The aft cabin includes an entertainment zone and en suite private area with open design. o
