SETTING THE PACE With some important observations concerning its versatility, business aviation is gaining traction as a key contributor to the national Chinese economy. Visitors to ABACE are seeing first-hand evidence that the industry has much to offer in helping build prosperity.

Bombardier business jet unit enjoys Asian growth Fresh off the heels of what Bombardier Business Aircraft regional vice president for Greater China Michael Han described as “a great year” in the country, the airframer is confident that private aviation will build on 2016’s success and continue to grow. The Canada-based company, which claims the largest installed business jet fleet in the Asia Pacific region, last year exceeded its stated guidance, delivering 163 aircraft worldwide, more than the 150 it projected earlier that year. Approximately 280 Bombardier business jets are based in the region, including more than 120 aircraft in China alone. It forecasts deliveries of more than 700 of its jets in Asia

over the next decade, and Han expects the business aircraft market to improve even further. “Starting from the second half of 2015, in terms of sales, we have already started our way to recovery,” he said. Han noted the preference in the region for medium-to-large widebody business aircraft and highlighted the company’s newest jet under development, the Global 7000, which currently has two flight-test vehicles flying in the program, which is proceeding smoothly. “In fact, the Global 7000 recently reached Mach 0.995, making it the largest business jet to fly so close

GAMA AVIATION OFFERS MX AT HKIA MAP.png

Gama Aviation Hutchison (Hong Kong), the joint venture formed early 2016 between the UK’s Gama Aviation and Hutchison Whampoa, announced at ABACE yesterday that it has firmed up its new maintenance offering in collaboration with Hong Kong International Airport-based CASL. The new maintenance check packages will be available starting this summer, said Gama Aviation (Booth P624). The packages have been designed “to provide a cost-effective, transparent pricing model for fleet and private owners.” Sergio Oliveira e Silva, general manager of the joint venture, said the company “identified

that business aircraft owners and operators often face opaque pricing and final bills that can climb alarmingly from the initial quote. Through our collaboration with CASL, we are introducing a simplified pricing structure for standard maintenance inspections on Gulfstream and Bombardier aircraft.” The offering gives aircraft owners maintenance at a cost that means they no longer have to fly three to four hours away to Singapore, or further afield, for an annual check. This is “inconvenient for the operator, adds hours to the aircraft and, in our view, is completely unnecessary,” said Oliveira e Silva. n

to the sound barrier,” he said. “This is very impressive.” According to Han, the four-zone twinjet is expected to enter service in the second half of 2018, and the company has already received purchase agreements for the new Global from Chinese customers. Support for the Long Haul

“Our exceptional service doesn’t stop once the sale is completed,” Han said on Monday at ABACE 2017. “Another way we have of ensuring that we answer the customer’s needs is by focusing on customer service and support.” To that end, Bombardier last week officially inaugurated its first service center in Tianjin, China, adding to the company’s network of nearly 100 locations around the world. Tianjin Aviation Services, a joint-venture with local governmental agency Tianjin Airport Economic Area, represents a “significant” investment on the part of the company and its partners, and the culmination of several years of planning, according to Lanny Schindelmeiser, the facility’s general manager. The Beijing-area facility received its CAAC authorization on March 15. With a staff of 30, the location can provide tipto-tail support, including engines, airframe and interiors, as well as base and line maintenance. Schindelmeiser noted that the facility is authorized to perform up to 96-month inspections on Challenger series jets and up 120-month inspections on Globals, and is currently engaged in its first inspection, a 60-month check on a Global 6000. “We are proud to bring our expertise closer to our customers’ bases of operation and to ensure faster access to topquality services, and to always provide them with an exceptional experience,” he concluded. o

Dassault Aviation brought its flagship Falcon 8X to the ABACE 2017 static display (Chalet 9), and if the success of the 7X in China is any indication, the 8X should do quite well in this market. According to Jean-Michel Jacob, president of Falcon AsiaPacific, Dassault already has one 8X under contract with a Chinese customer. “Prospects [for the 8X in China] look extremely good,” he said. “And there are many negotiations in progress already.” In China, the market for business jets “is waking up,” said Jacob. “It was quiet for the last two years, but now there is some real movement. Not as good as five years ago, but certainly an active market. The driver is the economy of China. China is getting bigger and more global, and its investments are located far away.” China is the second-largest market for the 7X, with 29 of the model currently in the country,

Now, people who need one buy one. It’s based on the requirements of the company, not the political aspect. That was true two years ago, but not anymore.” Highlighting more than 100 years in business, Dassault Aviation noted that it has expanded its customer service capabilities, growing the number of frontline representatives by 25 percent from 2010. At authorized service center Shanghai Hawker Pacific Business Aviation Service Centre, two Dassault maintenance engineers are based there to serve China-based Falcon operators. At Beijing Capital Airport, Deer Jet provides line maintenance services for Falcons and is applying to become a U.S. FAA-approved repair station, which it plans to achieve by the end of this year. Meanwhile, Dassault’s Beijing spares depot stocks more than 3,000 spare parts worth more than $6 million, and parts can be

although at one point there were nearly forty 7Xs in China. With a range of 11,950 m (6,450 nm), the 8X can fly from Shanghai to much of the U.S., including Chicago, all of Europe, most of Africa and all of Asia Pacific. “With one stop you can go to all of the places that you want,” said Carlos Brana, senior vice-president of civil aircraft for Dassault Aviation. “When you think of a given market, you try to meet the needs of the customer. The 8X can link the city pairs that the customer needs. [Our designs] are also based on technology. Most of us are engineers, and we manufacture a well-engineered airplane. The 8X is the most comfortable and quietest ever,” he added. Asked whether political factors in China have affected the business aviation market, Brana expressed optimism. “Yes, two years ago the anti-corruption campaign affected sales of business jets.

retrieved from its bonded warehouse in just two hours, according to Kathy Liu, director of customer service for the Asia Pacific region Dassault is working on offering FalconResponse flights to deliver parts and technicians to AOG (aircraft-on-ground) Falcon jets in Asia, Liu added. The company currently bases a Falcon 900 in the U.S. and one in Europe for FalconResponse flights. In Asia, Global Jet operates a Falcon 2000 that can be used to assist Dassault customers. So far, that jet has completed just one trip. To serve 8X customers, Dassault has been training customer service representatives and technicians and recertifying authorized service centers for 8X maintenance, as well as adding 8X parts at the Beijing depot. “From the customer-support side, we’re ready for the 8X,” said Liu. o

Dassault: bizjet market ‘waking up’ in China

IT SAYS, ‘LOOK FOR THE BUILDING WITH THE BIG JET ON IT’ With more than 35 aircraft on the static display ramp, there’s got to be something for just about everyone. Whether it’s a tiny helicopter or a large-cabin, long-range jet, if it’s in the program, it’s part of the show.

Rolls-Royce bullish on bizav redux UK-based Rolls-Royce (Booth H502) is confident that it can maintain its position as the engine-maker of choice for large-cabin, long-range business jets, despite recent competition for its BR700 powerplant family. The 15,000-lb class BR710 engine, produced by Rolls-Royce Germany in Dahlewitz, powers the Bombardier Global 5000 and 6000/Express/XRS, as well as the Gulfstream G500/G550. Its larger BR725 turbofan powers the Gulfstream G650/G650ER. These large-cabin aircraft still dominate the business aviation market in China and are also proliferating in other parts of Asia. Key to the company’s future is globalized customer service and support—Rolls-Royce CorporateCare has been adopted by the majority of its

customers—and new technology. Regarding the latter, RollsRoyce has a significant development effort, dubbed Advance 2, taking place to develop the next generation of engines, as well as for inserting new, advanced technology into existing engine lines. Last month, the company told AIN that it was confident the market for large-cabin business aircraft would continue to flourish, partly because the number of billionaires and other highnet-worth individuals continues to grow, especially in China. “In 2007 China had zero billionaires, but by the early 2020s it will overtake the U.S,” it said. Meanwhile, the main developments that will take the BR710 and BR725 into the next generation include an Advance 2 core, improved engine health

management, newer materials and cooling, a titanium “blisked” fan and an overall pressure ratio of 50:1. Joe Hoelzl, chief engineer of future programs, said Advance 2 was intended for new engines entering service in the 2020s, broadly offering a 10 percent specific fuel consumption reduction, 50 percent NOx margin improvement, 99.995 percent reliability and a 20 percent thrust-to-weight ratio increase. The scaleable architecture being developed in the 10,0000 to 20,000-poundthrust range can then be finetuned when airframers define their needs. In the near term, the technology will be able to improve the current BR700 family and also provide a larger member with a 52-inch fan. o

Gulfstream expands resources for its Asia Pacific customers Gulfstream Aerospace continues to add product support resources for operators in Asia Pacific, the U.S.-based aircraft manufacturer announced on Monday at ABACE 2017. This region accounts for the company’s “largest and fastest-growing international fleet,” it said. “Our Asia Pacific fleet grew by 25 aircraft in 2016 and is now well over 300 [aircraft],” said Gulfstream product support president Derek Zimmerman. “Strong customer response to our aircraft over the past several years in the region, especially Greater China, has resulted in us building a significant support presence there, which we enhance and supplement whenever possible. We are committed to providing our customers with first-class support throughout their Gulfstream ownership experience.” Of the 314 Gulfstream aircraft in the Asia Pacific region, more than 180 are based in Greater China. The company has thus strengthened its depth of customer support in the area, doubling the number of field service representatives (FSRs) in Hong Kong from two to

four. Gulfstream also has two FSRs in China and one each in Japan, Singapore, Australia and India. “The additional FSRs give operators easy local access to our growing network,” Zimmerman said. “Their technical expertise complements our strategically located presence in the region and is a resource that can be called upon 24 hours a day, seven days a week.” At Gulfstream Beijing, technicians have serviced more than 600 jets in the facility’s more than four years of operation at Beijing Capital International Airport. Earlier this year, Gulfstream Beijing was certified as an authorized maintenance organization by the Cayman Islands. The facility is also authorized to work on most Gulfstreams registered in the U.S., China, Macau and Hong Kong. To support its growing fleet in Asia Pacific, Gulfstream (Chalet 2) maintains nearly $55 million of “strategically placed” spare parts inventory in Hong Kong, Beijing, Singapore and Melbourne, Australia. o

With three of its business jets on display here at ABACE, Gulfstream announced new support assets.

Sino Jet celebrating five years, and a fleet of more than 30 jets Sino Jet returns to ABACE this year marking the successful completion of its first five-year plan that has helped it expand into one of the largest operators in the region. Sino Jet (Booth P202) was founded in 2011 with a vision of becoming a market leader within five years. The company now operates more than 30 aircraft with operational bases in Hong Kong and Beijing, as well as ground service branches in Tianjin, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Shenzhen and Macao, among others. Sino Jet further has established a Geo Start Entrepreneur Flying Club to provide a one-stop package covering private jet management, ground service, charter and destination travel.

Beyond growth of its fleet and service options, the company also emphasized the integration of safety into its business culture, Sino Jet said, noting that it has obtained IS-BAO Stage II registration. The company has dedicated a safety committee to conduct, discuss and evaluate safety management and the execution of safety programs. Sino Jet credited ABACE as an important platform for the company, not only to exhibit its latest developments but also to review the past and look into the future. As the company embarks on its second five-year plan, Sino Jet said it hopes to continue to play a role in the development of the business aviation market in Asia. o

THE WORLD IS LISTENING One of the most compelling missions for business aviation is simply telling its story. Here at ABACE, media from around the world listened attentively to all the reasons why it’s a key element in a future transportation system that makes sense for Asia Pacific.

Chinese airport growth plans provide possibilities for bizav NBAA president and CEO Ed Bolen has welcomed China’s commitment to adding a steady stream of new airports. Speaking to reporters at ABACE 2017 this week, he stressed that this is critical to the development of business aviation in the nation. Bolen noted that the development of airports in China has followed a similar path as the development of business aviation itself, starting with the largest facilities and scaling down slowly. This is opposite of how airports evolved in in the U.S., he added, citing as an example Chicago O’Hare International Airport. That facility is now one of the largest and busiest in the U.S., but grew out a small airfield that once was an orchard (thus the designator ORD). In China, the focus initially had been on large commercial facilities, but now officials are expanding the number of facilities throughout the nation, giving hopes that more facilities will open up for business and general aviation operations. “I am encouraged by the rapid pace of airport development in China,” Bolen said, noting that China has been adding airports at a rate of 10 to 20 a year for the past two decades. That number is expected to pick up to 25 to 30 airports annually for some time to come, he stated. “The U.S. has a very old and established airport infrastructure,” which includes 5,000 facilities, he said. China has less than 400 airports “so there is room to grow,” Bolen noted. “Our hope is as the country focuses on developing airports, China will develop general aviation airports.” Along with China’s focus on new airports, Bolen has also been encouraged by the regulatory approach to business and

general aviation. He pointed to the gradual liberalization of the airspace and the inclusion of the industry in the recent five-year plans. The Civil Aviation Authority of China has taken a strong interest, Bolen added, as evidenced by the participation of Jiang Huaiyu, director general of the eastern regional headquarters for the Civil Aviation Authority of China, not only in the ABACE opening general session, but by the hosting of a CAAC forum. The forum provides a dialog that can serve to educate people about the unique role that business aviation plays. o

the time previously taken in filling the trucks and moving them to the parking ramp. HKBAC’s executive terminal, apron and the three hangar complexes, pilot lounge and other resting facilities are also being upgraded as recommended by customer surveys and feedback. Service Improvements:

Efficiency has been increased in towing aircraft from remote bays and preparation for departure, through the introduction of HKBAC’s own backup cross runway towing service. A brand-new tug was added and a team of experienced staff to provide service when the three existing line maintenance operators are otherwise occupied. The Mobile Operating System (MOS) offers a one-stop solution, allowing operators to complete flight bookings, make changes and record additional orders on a single platform. Once the service request is carried out by HKBAC’s operations team, a real-time completion status will be sent to clients. Slot & Parking Improvements at HKIA

With new parking stands at HKIA, business jet users have had a zero rejection rate since December 2016. Recognizing the dynamic business schedule changes executives require, the airport authority fully supports granting extension of parking commitments. As Hong Kong International Airport is an international and regional aviation hub, landing slot availability has always been tight. In this respect, HKBAC is committed to enhancing takeoff and landing arrangements for business aviation. Currently, Hong Kong CAD, AA, HKBAC and all business aviation operators are working closely for runway slot application and utilization. There are 20-to-25 slots available daily between the hours of 23:00 and 13:59+1 UTC, while five exclusive runway slots for GA/BA (in compliance with the Relatively Quieter Aircraft Type list of HKCAD, Hong Kong’s Civil Aviation Department) during 14:00-22:59 UTC. LEASING & LENDING SOLUTIONS FOR PRIVATE AIRCRAFT

TAG Farnborough is London gateway by Charles Alcock London has at least half a dozen good options for business aircraft operators looking to access the UK capital. But TAG Farnborough Airport is the only purpose-built facility that is totally dedicated to business aviation, and this probably explains why it continues to score highly in the annual survey of FBOs in which the readers of AIN—the group that publishes ABACE Convention News— rate their favorite providers of ground handling. In generally flat economic conditions, the airport saw marginal growth in movements last year, rising to 25,149. But, significantly, there was a 5.5 percent increase in the largest aircraft types, such as Airbus Corporate Jets and the Embraer Lineage, with almost 1,000 of these flocking to Farnborough. The increase in the average size of aircraft using the airport is reflected in one of TAG’s most recent improvements—the addition of a separate lounge on the top-floor of its three-story 4,830 sq m (52,000 sq ft) terminal to accommodate larger groups such as professional sports teams and rock bands. “This has been a great success, attracting more larger aircraft,” commented TAG Farnborough Airport CEO Brandon O’Reilly. “It means we can separate larger groups from other passengers, which is better for both of them.” Another popular new addition is a gym built for visiting pilots who want to keep fit while waiting for their passengers. One day, the gym had to shut for two hours due to a technical problem and flight crew were soon bombarding staff with demands to re-open it. TAG (Booth H512)

also uses an iPad app to gather customer feedback on all aspects of its services. TAG has also invested time and money in being a better neighbor to the local suburban community, while offering pilots greater flexibility. As part of an airspace change proposal made to the UK Civil Aviation Authority, it hopes by around May to have permission for air traffic controllers to allow standard instrument departures that would avoid flights flying directly over the most populated local areas. This is part of a wider green initiative under which Farnborough aims to be a completely carbon-neutral airport by 2019. It is one of a handful of airports that is ISO14001-compliant with an auditable environmental management system and last year sent no waste whatsoever for landfill. Everything was recycled or incinerated to make energy. “The key difference is that we are the only [UK] airport solely dedicated to business aviation,” O’Reilly told AIN. “There are others that are hybrids with other activities like flying schools but here we are completely dedicated to business aviation and the ownership of the airport and the operation of the FBO are all concentrated in one company so there is no compromise on service.” On the edge of the large airport site (formerly a British government military aviation research establishment), TAG owns and operates the Aviator Hotel, which has proven popular with operators and other customers. This year, the company is rolling out a new service that will mean flight crew can be given their hotel room keys as they arrive on the aircraft,

avoiding the need to check in. The FBO was one of the first in the world to achieve the IS-BAH standards for ground handling set by the International Business Aviation Council. In addition to TAG Farnborough’s eye-catching terminal building, Farnborough offers around 31,167 sq m (400,000 sq ft) of hangar space, and 130,064 sq m (1.4 million sq ft) of ramp parking area. The airport is located about 56 km (35 miles) south west of central London with convenient access via the M3 highway. o

NEW PRIVATE TERMINAL IN BANGKOK SCORES HIGHLY IN SURVEY The top-rated Asian FBO in the most recent annual survey of FBOs in which the readers of AIN—the group that publishes ABACE Convention News—rate their favorite providers of ground handling was MJets in the Thai capital Bangkok. The company opened its new FBO at Don Mueang International Airport last September. The facility is located in a 2,397 sq-m (25,800-sqft) private terminal with a 316 sq-m (3,400-sq-ft) executive lounge, including meeting rooms and a separate area for private accommodations, on-site customs, immigration and security service. It also has a new shower-equipped crew lounge and rest area, nearly tripling the size of the crew area in the previous facility, along with four conference/training rooms. In 2015, the company became the first FBO in Southeast Asia to earn IS-BAH accreditation through the International Business Aviation Council and it expects to complete stage-two certification in July 2017. Since the new building was opened, MJets has added a shaded area for parking cars, providing protection from intense sunshine. The MJets facility also includes four separate hangars, ranging in size from 1,500 sq m to 3,000 sq m.

The on-site gym has proven highly popular among air crews looking to keep fit while awaiting their next flight.

The largest hangar can accommodate a pair of Boeing Business Jets simultaneously. The company provides comprehensive training for its staff and this process is recorded and managed by its quality and safety department. Employees have twice-yearly reviews and opportunities for career advancement, with the company emphasizing the need to comprehensively understand and respond to customer needs, as well as the importance of honesty and sincerity. According to FBO director Roj Kulnaratana, traffic levels are starting to pick up after a couple of “pretty flat” years due to a mix of global economic factors and political instability in Thailand. Based on positive indicators since February, MJets now anticipates around 4 percent growth in 2017, compared with 2016. “It looks like the existing military government has recently reached its learning curve and is running the country more effectively than before,” Kulnaratana told AIN. “Wider acceptance has been obtained from other countries and more confidence has been earned from foreign investors.” —C.A.

Japanese plan to boost bizav starts to show positive results Japan’s push to become a business-aviation-friendly environment for foreign operators is paying off, with the sector showing signs of a steady upward trend, according to Kenji Sakata, the deputy director of the Policy Research Office, Aviation Strategy Division at Japan’s Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB). Speaking to AIN before this year’s ABACE event, Sakata said international business aviation recorded strong doubledigit growth of 10.4 percent in 2016, with a 5 percent increase at Haneda International Airport and a staggering 25.5 percent increase at Narita International. “The demand from business aviation has been so strong that some of the landing requests [at Haneda] have been rejected,” said Sakata. “Taking this situation into consideration, we have reviewed the acceptance conditions for business aviation, such as the expansion of slots in April 2016.” Conveniently located 10 miles from downtown Tokyo, Haneda Airport has become a hotspot for business aviation travelers. According to Makoto Tsunogae, secretary general of the Japanese Business Aviation Association (JBAA, Booth P109), more than 60 percent of foreign business jets are destined for the Metropolitan Tokyo area, and more than 80 percent fly into Japan’s big four airports—Haneda, Narita, Kansai and Chubu. Moreover, 40 percent of Japanbound business jets come from China. The number of parking spots at Haneda was increased last year, and landing slots were doubled, from eight to 16 per day (between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. local time), with the maximum number of arrival slots from four to 15. The authority also eliminated slot restrictions past midnight. “To be friendlier to business jets, lead time for operational application of foreign business jets coming to, and flying within, Japan was shortened [last October], mostly to three days. Ferry flights between Haneda and Narita can be made with 24 hours’ pre-notice,” said Tsunogae. Still, for those looking to avoid the general congestion of the Tokyo area, Sakata noted that any airport that accepts commercial aircraft has the ability to accommodate business jets. “In March 2016, Kansai International Airport opened a new customs and immigration facility, named ‘Fast Lane,’ which ensures smooth immigration procedures for business aviation passengers,” said Sakata. “Likewise, some other airports, such as Chubu, Nagoya and Kobe, have exclusive customs and immigration facilities for business aviation passengers. These dedicated facilities ensure fast and smooth customs clearance.” For travelers flying into Chubu, Centrair, Kansai International, New Chitose, Sendai, Hiroshima, Fukuoka, Saga and Naha, the permit lead-time is

three days, or 24 hours in the case of urgent business. In principle, one week is required for all other airports in the country. “There are many rural airports that accept business jets, especially for sightseeing purposes. We need to disseminate how they can be utilized,” said Tsunogae. Close collaboration and proper utilization of Japan’s airports is now high on the agenda for aviation authorities, as the country gears up for the Rugby World Cup in 2019 and the Olympics/Paralympics in 2020. Universal Support

To ensure a seamless travel experience, Texas-based Universal Weather and Aviation (including its ground support division, Universal Aviation) is one company that offers established expertise in the Japanese market. Established in 2004, Universal’s unit in Japan—Universal Aviation Japan— provides supervisory services at all of the country’s airports, in addition to its

ground-support facilities at Haneda, Narita, Osaka-Kansai and Sapporo. The team also offers services in English, Japanese, Chinese, Korean and Spanish. “[We are] already ramping up staff and bringing expertise from our sister company in Brazil to bring best practices and lessons learned from the recent Summer Olympics in Rio,” said Charlie Mularski, Universal Weather and Aviation regional vice president for Asia Pacific. “Our ground-handling and full coordination staff in Japan are undergoing ramp safety training, customer service workshops, procuring new vehicles and ground support equipment, and we are hiring more Chinese-speaking supervisors to help serve the large volume of business jets expected during the games in Tokyo.” Mularski added that Universal Aviation Japan’s managing director, Hiroshi Higashiyama, who also serves as a volunteer director at the JCAB, is working with the authorities to prepare recommendations for logistics, parking options and slots. Convention attendees who want to know more about flying into Japan are invited to visit the Japanese team booths (located between P107 and P113) and Universal Aviation’s booth (H210). o

APG introducing pilots to dynamic curtailment Aircraft Performance Group (APG) is exhibiting at ABACE 2017 in its ongoing effort to educate pilots and aircraft operators about runway analysis and takeoff performance, as well as the importance of considering “dynamic curtailment” in weight-and-balance calculations. Runway analysis and dynamic curtailment are both features available in APG’s iPreFlight iOS app, and ABACE visitors can view demonstrations of the software at APG’s booth (P135). Runway analysis allows operators to fly with a maximum payload while meeting safety requirements in case of loss of one engine after takeoff. Dynamic curtailment also maximizes payload while calculating the effects of fuel and fluid consumption, passenger movement and other changes in weight-and-balance during flight. If runway analysis or dynamic curtailment are not taken into account, then the aircraft’s maximum payload will be lower, thus reducing the number of passengers and baggage that can be carried and also lowering maximum range. In many cases, regulators require commercial operators to calculate dynamic curtailment effects. “We’re continuing to see a lot of blank looks from pilots and training organizations when we bring [dynamic curtailment] up,” said APG CEO Mike Caflisch. “They’ve never heard of it before.” Likewise runway analysis. “There continues to be unawareness or misinformation or lack of information or understanding in the pilot community, so that we continue to do outreach

and education to make sure that everybody understands the regulations and requirements for runway analysis calculations versus all-engine gradient calculations, he said.” The dynamic curtailment features that are now part of the iPreFlight app are based on the recommendations of FAA Advisory Circular (AC) 120-27E. While many FAA inspectors and not just pilots are unaware of the dynamic curtailment AC, APG is focusing on educating pilots, operators and regulators. “We’re just calling to mind, this is there for a good reason, and here’s what we’re doing to support the customers’ ability to comply with that AC. It reflects how the center of gravity changes when, say, the pilot moves aft to the lavatory or the flight attendant pushes a galley cart aft.” Typically, Part 135 charter operators with large-cabin airplanes were the first to adopt dynamic curtailment, but Part 91 operators are also using the technique. “The common denominator is those departments and organizations that typically go above and beyond the minimum standards,” Caflisch said. “These are true professional flight departments, [they fly] by the book, and have structured systems and standards and compliance oversight.” The smallest aircraft using iPreFlight and dynamic curtailment are Cessna Citations, he said. “Any cabin where you would experience passenger or crew movement in flight is one that lends itself to needing to a curtailment.”

Jinggong Global Jet now has this Falcon 2000EX EASy available for charter within China and internationally.

Jinggong Global Jet adds to its fleet Jinggong Global Jet—the jointventure charter provider that was formed last year between the Jinggong Group and Atlanta, Georgia-based aviation services provider Global Jet—has expanded its staff and its fleet. At its launch last year, the company had a Dassault Falcon 2000Ex EASy based at Hangzhou International Airport available for flights within China. “The aircraft is flying almost every day, we are quite amazed at the continuous demand,” said Bjorn Naberhuis, the company’s vice president for business development. “This increasing interest is clearly a sign that the country was looking for this type of high-end, tailor-made service.”

That aircraft is now capable of long-range international flights, according to Jinggong Global, which has now added a Dassault 7X trijet to its AOC as the second member of its fleet. The company (Booth P602) has two offices in mainland China, as well as another in Hong Kong, and provides what it describes as a true understanding of local market mechanisms and an extensive knowledge of the country’s culture and expectations, offering grooming classes and Chinese tea ceremony workshops to its staff. Yet, even as a boutique operator it has been able to successfully increase its visibility. “When targeting a specific niche clientele like ours, the best promotion remains word-of-mouth, and

even more so in this region,” said Jenny Chen, the company’s assistant general manager. “If a customer has enjoyed the services provided from the beginning to the end, they will most likely recommend it to their relations and so on. This is priceless for us.” Having added five new recruits recently, the company’s staff based in Hangzhou now numbers 45, with a goal of providing safety, unrivalled crew service on board and efficient ground customer service. “Jinggong Global Jet is proud to be a unique local operator, providing the highest-level training to its crew members to fully meet European standards of excellence and satisfy the Asian market,” noted company CEO Franck Dubarry. o

APG is also partnering with aircraft manufacturers and simulator training providers to spread the word about dynamic curtailment. Bombardier, for example, is using iPreFlight at its training center in Dallas, Texas, and adding it in Montreal, Canada. Embraer has also been using iPreFlight for many years. o

BUSINESS IS BLOSSOMING APG’s iPreFlight app assesses runway performance and “dynamic curtailment,” enabling operators to maximize their payload while still remaining safe. Dynamic curtailment is the effect of fuel burn/transfer and passenger movement on weight and balance.

The large-cabin business jet experience is about to be redefined, thanks to Gulfstream Aerospace’s G500. The approximately $45 million large-cabin, long-range jet—which the airframer now expects to begin d elivering to customers by late 2017—has a maximum speed of Mach 0.925. It has a range of 5,000 nautical miles at Mach 0.85 and can be configured to convey up to 19 passengers in a three-zone cabin. The aircraft features Gulf stream’s Symmetry flight deck, which is driven by Honeywell Primus Epic avionics and characterized by clean lines and an absence of much visible switchology. The avionics include Gulfstream’s enhanced vision, Honeywell’s synthetic vision with 3-D taxi, and a head-up display system. Pilot inputs are made through five Honeywell touchscreens with large, easily viewed icons. Gulfstream’s familiar cursorcontrol devices (CCD) are integrated into the center console at the head of the handgrips. The console extends aft of the pilot seats, but it is lower-slung,

making step-over entry and exit easier. The CCD gives each pilot control of three of the four main display screens and allows data to be shifted between them in the event of a failure. Out the windshield and over the nose, visibility is expansive. The gaspers are large and located to provide optimum ventilation. The new-design Ipeco crew seats have multiple adjustments. The elbow rests behind the sidesticks are adjustable, as are the rudder pedals. The sidewalls offer ample storage space for personal items. Two 110-volt power outlets are located aft of the pilot seats. In development for seven years, the G500 is slated to replace the G450 in Gulfstream’s product lineup and shares considerable proven designs and systems with the airframer’s wildly successful ultra-long-range, large-cabin G650. Equipment and systems in common with those on the G650 include air data and secondary power; primary avionics content; auxiliary power unit; cabin acoustic treatment; satellite, navigation, and radio communications;

the wireless Gulfstream Cabin Management System; and hydraulic and electric power generation. The fly-by-wire flight controls and actuation, cabin pressurization and control, landing-gear control, and aircraft health and trend monitoring system all employ architecture and design similar to what you’ll find on the G650. The G500 also shares the G650’s expansive cabin windows and emergency exits and has a similarly styled electric main entry door. In a recently announced minor change, the G500 has 14 main cabin windows, up from an originally envisioned 12. The G500 maintains Gulf stream’s signature style, from the clean cabin design to the large oval cabin windows to the slick wing with an aggressive 36-degree sweep. The cabin cross section measures 91 inches wide and 74 inches tall—about seven inches wider and two inches taller than the cabin cross section in the G450. New cabin seats have controls in the inboard armrests and pockets sculpted into the interior arms for more hip room. The aircraft features forward and aft lavatories and a roomy 175-cubicfoot baggage compartment that is accessible in flight through the aft lavatory. Additional floor and ceiling tracking allows for flexible loading and incorporates folddown shelving and space that can be configured to store golf clubs, ski gear, or large suitcases. The G500 can be configured with a forward or aft galley that allows for a high degree of customization. The galley offers a four-cubic-foot refrigerator, a microwave/convection oven, and an oversized sink. A steam oven is optional. Gulfstream designed the G500 with simplicity in mind. The flight controls need just eight line-replaceable units as opposed to 16 on the G650. In addition, major inspections

The G500 test fleet has flown well over 2,000 hours, achieving a top speed of Mach 0.995—just barely under the sound barrier. It has flown at up to 53,000 feet, successfully crossing the Atlantic, and logging a longest flight of nearly eight and a half hours. It has smartly survived a variety of ground-based extreme temperature chamber and crosswind torture tests at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. Besides flying four certification test aircraft and one production evaluation aircraft, Gulfstream has conducted over 53,000 hours of testing in the systems integration bench, integration test facility, and “iron bird” test fixture. Human-factors testing has been completed with the FAA and its European equivalent, EASA, in the integration test facility and a FlightSafety International cockpit simulator. Among the human-factors tests was one that validated the pilots’ ability to use the G500’s touchscreen avionics in turbulence. FlightSafety had a G500 full-motion simulator up and running at its Savannah Learning Center before the aircraft made its first flight. It’s fully conformed to the G500’s flight deck and features new Vital 1000 high-resolution graphics. Gulfstream used it to develop flight-crew procedures for the G500 and to support crew training, familiarization, and human-factors testing. —M.H.

London City Jet Centre is leveraging its location by Ian Sheppard London City Airport’s Jet Centre (Booth P400) has launched a new incentive scheme, designed

to encourage new operators and travelers to experience the airport’s benefits—including its

quick links to central London, especially the popular Square Mile financial district. The airport wants people “to understand the value this represents in terms of both customer time and experience.” The new broker incentive will reward those that introduce their clients to London City (LCY) as a travel option. The airport says London City Airport’s closeness to the city center comes with challenging approaches and departures for big jets.

it wants to become “the gateway of choice for passengers arriving and leaving London.” The scheme will be in place throughout 2017 and awarded for every flight that is placed through London City Airport. It will reinforce another recent LCY initiative that prices charter flights at a competitive rate compared with other airports around London, while offering “a far superior ground time to the most frequently requested destinations of Mayfair & Kensington.” The Jet Centre is housed in a standalone self-contained facility with dedicated security and immigration staffing and boasts a 90-second passenger transfer from car to aircraft. The facility was recently awarded IS-BAH certification and says it has “full support services on site including limousines and black cabs on account, a partnership with U.S.-headquartered in-flight catering company Air Culinaire, aircraft cleaning and a dedicated fuel bowser.” Aircraft types recently approved to perform London City’s steep approach (5.5 degrees) include the Bombardier Global 6000, Dassault Falcon 8X, Embraer Legacy 550 and Gulfstream G280. Meanwhile the airport has launched a $427.5 million private sector infrastructure investment. It will add seven new aircraft parking slots at the main terminal, a full-length parallel taxiway (so aircraft won’t have to back-taxi down the runway) and a terminal expansion. The development will allow LCY to welcome 6.5 million pas sengers, operate 45 aircraft movements per hour and accommodate the next generation of regional aircraft including the Bombardier C Series CS100 and the Embraer E2 regional jet. Work is scheduled to begin this summer, coinciding with the airport’s 30th year of operation. o

Nomad expands Asia-Pacific menu with a Challenger 604 in Singapore by Ian Sheppard Having moved its base from Berne to Kloten, near Zurich Airport, last year, the Swiss company Nomad Aviation (Booth P139) is broadening its customer base and reach. Nomad will, as part of a new strategic expansion plan, base an aircraft in Singapore, it’s first outside

Europe. The aircraft will be a Bombardier Challenger 604. Heinz Keohli, executive chairman and CEO of Nomad, told AIN that the company now operates three Challenger 604s, an Embraer Legacy 650, a Bombardier Global 5000, a Beechcraft Premier 1 and one

Cessna Citation CJ1. Charter work is predominantly assigned to two of the Challengers, the Global and the Legacy, said Koehli. “In addition we have a fleet of five managed planes for corporations and private individuals—including a Global XRS and Citation CJ,” he added,

“The company’s strategic goal is to expand, as the company mainly did charter work in the Russia market previously,” said Koehli, who before acquiring Nomad in June 2015 was a founder of AMAC in Berne, having been with Jet Aviation for many years before 2007. “We want to expand into the Middle East and Europe, especially with more direct clients, and we also want to grow the aircraft management side.” Koehli reflected on how tough the market is. “Charter is a tightmargin business, but expanding into the Middle East and Far East, the margins are better. So we’re planning to base one of our Challengers in Singapore and start charter there in April or May this year,” he said. “It’s a test—we have a venture established with Hawker Pacific locally,” he added. Two-leg Business Plan

So the company’s main goal this year is to start a new outshoot of the company in the Far East, while continuing to grow and serve the European, Middle East and Russian markets. “Our core is still Russia, with 90 percent [of the operations],” said Koehli, “However we used to fly 90 hours a month in Russia, but now it’s about 60.” Koehli continued, “We would like to find owners of planes we can manage and also run on charter on our AOC. But we have to be careful, as we are dependent on the owners; you risk having an AOC but no planes available.” He suggested companies such as Nomad need “two legs” with its own planes “that you control” and an extended fleet of managed aircraft. He said the company Nomad Aviation’s portfolio includes jets from Cessna’s light Citation CJ series (below) up to large-cabin Bombardier Global 6000 (left). The Swiss firm recognizes charter margins are higher in Asia and the Middle East and has made inroads into those markets.

would like to place more planes in both Russia and Singapore. Meanwhile, Koehli suggested that the market in Europe “has picked up” but more for the smaller Embraer Phenoms and Cessna Citations, while “larger cabin are more popular in the Middle East and Russia.” He said that the U.S. was not an option for the company as “the U.S. market is completely full— the emerging markets are better.” Nomad is interested to explore the market more in places like India and the Far East, and “possibly new places, like Iraq.” Europe remains of considerable interest though. Having built its business on the Russian market through local brokers after being founded in 2008, Nomad “neglected the European side of the business, so when the Russian side turned south, they were on the wrong foot.” He was referring to the founders of the company, two very experienced business jet pilots, Claude Neumeyer and Rainer Schurr. In conclusion, Koehli commented on consolidation in the market, or the lack of it. “Everyone hoped it would happen, but it hasn’t really happened so far. Everyone hopes that the cheap operators will go away, because they can’t afford to be an operator.” He noted that the Middle East suffers in particular from “operators without a license—grey market people. The hope is that a handful of good operators will survive—but the differentiation is price.” He suggested also that op erators were fighting back against brokers by trying to get direct customers. “The brokers took away the business,” he explained, by wrapping the operation up as a package with other services and taking most of the margin for themselves. “The operators gave it away as they just wanted to fly from A to B, so they have become just providers of flights to brokers. So operators are flying for minimal margins, 3-to-5 percent.” Another driving factor is that the charter market is “extremely competitive” so it is attractive to find new “green field” markets out East—“in Southeast Asia, Indonesia and Thailand for example.” o

本田飞机的OTWEM(引擎悬置机翼 上方)的配置不同寻常,但却改善了 内部环境。 The HondaJet’s OTWEM (over the wing engine mount) configuration is unusual, but it makes for a better interior environment.

aviation history has played out largely “top down” in the sense that airlines came first, unlike Western aviation where small airplanes formed the bedrock of the industry, and airlines evolved from there. So how can Honda’s small jet find its way into the culture where private flying has typically meant a global jet, either as big as an airliner, or close to it? The answer is all about the HondaJet cabin. Savvy business aircraft designers agree that a successful project—large or small—launches from the inside out, with the main focus on passenger space and comfort. That’s where Honda started with plans for its HondaJet many years ago. The location of the engines is a direct result of that focus. Even though rear-mounted engines, themselves, don’t take up space inside the cabin, they require beefed up structure to handle the weight and stress they create on the airframe. That takes up space in the airframe that cannot be used for creature comfort. There is also the matter of fuel and hydraulic lines, control cables, wiring and other connections from the fuel and oil tanks, hydraulic reservoirs and the necessary connections from the cockpit having to run the length of the cabin. With wing-mounted engines, the run of delivery lines, wires and cables is significantly reduced, with the resulting savings in weight as well as space and complexity. For example, the longer a wire has to run, the thicker it needs to be to handle the current. All that structure and hardware, while not visible from the passenger seats, takes up space and weight. And when the engines are on the wing, right next to the fuel tanks, there is no need to run fuel through the main fuselage, not

While it ranks among the “light” jets, the HondaJet’s cabin has extra space and is very quiet, thanks to its wing-mounted engines.

When you walk up to the red-andwhite H450 HondaJet, making its debut on the ABACE aircraft static display line, the most noticeable feature is the location of its engines. The “over the wing engine mount” (OTWEM for short) raises eyebrows the first time people see it. Why are the pair of Williams International FJ44 jet engines attached above the wing, rather than on the tail, where most business jets have them? To answer that question for ABACE attendees, the HondaJet is on staticdisplay at the ABACE show for the first time, and Honda believes its entry into the light-jet market will be particularly successful in the Asia-Pacific region. This has been a challenging category for manufacturers, largely because small jets just haven’t fit well into the image of private aviation. China’s

only saving weight and complexity, but also adding a safety element. On-the-Wing Works

Wing-mounted engines are also more efficient in their weight-and-balance distribution. And tailmounted engines produce significantly more vibration throughout the cabin, along with the noise and discomfort that goes along with it. That’s one reason most airliners have their engines mounted under their wings. Honda uses the low decibel levels of the HondaJet as one of its marketing tools. Michimasa Fujino, president and CEO of Honda Aircraft and designer of the HondaJet understood all of this, but he also had to acknowledge that underwing engines are impractical in an aircraft as small as the HondaJet—or just about any business jet. Putting them on pylons above the wing is an unusual solution, but with the HondaJet, it works. The result is an airplane that is the most efficient in its class by a factor of 17 percent, with a maximum cruise speed of 782 km per hour (422 knots) and a maximum cruising altitude of 43,000 feet. With a range of 2,265 km (1,223 nautical miles) it has impressive runway performance, able to take off and land in as little as 372 m (4,000 feet) at its maximum weight—an important consideration for Chinese customers with the shortage of large airports in the region. It might look like the tall pylons the engines are attached to would create lots of drag but, in fact, wind-tunnel tests showed that by placing them carefully, Fujino was able to achieve neutral aerodynamic drag from the pylons. It’s as if they weren’t even there. Wind tunnel tests also allowed Fujino to set the angle of the engines so the airflow into their fans is not compromised, even when the airplane is flying at steep nose-up attitudes, as on climbout after takeoff and on landing approach. The configuration is not unheard of. The Russian Beriev Be-200 amphibian has its pair of turbofans located on pylons above the fuselage, but they are there for another reason. Since the Beriev takes off from water, it’s necessary to have the engines up high to keep them from sucking water into the fans and drowning the combustion chamber. So that’s how Fujino’s engines found a home atop the HondaJet’s wings, leaving lots more space inside the cabin than would have otherwise been available in a light jet. It’s one big reason Honda expects the HondaJet to be attractive to AsiaPacific customers.

24 ABACE Convention News • April 12, 2017 • www.ainonline.com

Another reason for Honda’s optimism is the step forward the HondaJet represents in efficiency. A lot of that has to do with the increase of laminar flow in the design, not only on the wings, but also on the nose of the aircraft and the rest of its fuselage. The front end of the HondaJet does have a bit of a duck-bill appearance. That is the result of wind tunnel testing that optimized the front of the airplane for slipping through air with minimal drag, and also generating some of the lift that makes it fly. Any lift generated by the body of the aircraft is lift that does not have to come from the wings, and that translates to less drag and greater efficiency. Downstream effects include lower fuel burn, greater range and less environmental impact. Among the recent trends in business aviation in the Asia Pacific region, the practice “right-sizing” aircraft for the mission is gaining traction. Not so long ago, large-cabin jets were to top sellers, even if their owners seldom took advantage of their seating capacity or their long-range capability. But following the recent austerity movement, a more practical, efficient tone has overtaken business aviation. Midsize jets are doing better, and that bodes well for the HondaJet, even though it technically ranks among the “light” category. Another reason for operating a small jet with an oversize cabin is runway performance, especially in the Asia-Pacific region where airports are scarce. At full-up weight, the HondaJet’s can take off in 372 m (4,000 feet), and land in three quarters of that distance—much less than large or even midsize jets. As China expands its aviation infrastructure, authorities might find that building many small- to mediumsize airports will be more effective than building fewer large ones. Linking multiple regions of the country with air service could depend on smaller aircraft with versatile performance. The HondaJet could find critical roles in medical transport, emergency relief and utility flying, such as delivering work crews to remote sites, or doctors to far-flung regions where medical care is vitally important. So, as China’s general aviation industry expands and matures, the traditional large-jet preference ought to give way to more rational, practical aircraft such as the HondaJet. At least, that’s Honda Aircraft’s hope. With its first ABACE appearance, the HondaJet and its unusual engine configuration could launch a movement that will make it much more visible in the future. o

Guan said that the Legacy 500 was the first to a Chinese customer (in Tianjin), and added that in September 2016 Embraer “signed a firm order with Colorful Yunnan General Aviation for two light Phenom 300s and delivered them to the customer by the end of the year.” Asked what the main factors are affecting the Chinese market at present, Guan said the market had huge potential for Embraer “considering the economic volume, the great consumption of power, the HNWI (high net worth individual) numbers etc. “However, there are two major challenges all the OEMs have to face and conquer: the infrastructure lags behind compared with mature markets, leading to tight flight slots and high costs; and the shortage of experienced professional aviation talent, including pilots, crew, engineers, managerial talent. This restrains the fast growth of the executive aviation market in China.” Embraer has been producing small regional aircraft in China for some years, but the executive jets have always been produced in Brazil (centered on São José dos Campos, between Rio and São Paulo) and, more recently, also in Melbourne, Florida. The latter, said Guan, manufactures only the Phenom 100 and 300, and the Legacy 450 and 500. “Based on the current import duty and VAT position in China, it will be more economical and efficient to manufacture in Brazil or the U.S. However, we attach great importance to the Chinese

market and Chinese customers. [So] in the future Embraer will continue to seek the best solution to serve its customers and supply them with the products and services they really need.” He noted that the fact Embraer has set up a Beijing office reflects its attitude to the Chinese market, with its Singapore office handling the rest of the markets in Asia. Regional Hubs

But why is China so important to the Brazilian company? Guan listed the main reasons: It has five cities that rank as regional hubs for global billionaires, compared to only four cities in the Americas. “The appearance of more high net worth individuals—333 super rich individuals whose personal assets total over 10 billion yuan [U.S. $1.45 billion]—brings more consumption power and dynamics to the executive aviation market.” He continued, “Besides, compared with the fleet size of the American market, the development of executive aviation in China lags far behind. By 2016, there were only 482 executive jets in the Greater China area, while the number has surpassed 10,000 in the USA. The fleet size does not match the economic volume of China, which reflects the great potential of the market.” Another factor Guan touched upon was finance, and its importance to market growth. He reflected, “Embraer has very

good cooperation with domestic and international banks, lessors and other financial providers that can help our customers with different credit ratings to obtain financial support in the China and overseas financial markets,” with financing being conducted in USD or Chinese RMB. He added that such institutions “recognize Embraer’s products and services.” Aircraft Size

A question on everyone’s lips at ABACE is what the trends are with aircraft sizes—are the bigger jets doing best, how are the smaller ones doing, and not forgetting the midsize markets. Guan told AIN, “The first executive jet entered the Chinese market in the 1990s. At first, Chinese customers preferred ultra-large jets, but after more than 10 years’ development, Chinese consumers have a more profound understanding of executive jets and have started to treat them as time and efficiency machines. “So those midsize and light executive jets with excellent performance and economic operation are [now] well accepted. “In 2015, Embraer delivered the first entry-level Phenom 100 in the Chinese market to a customer. In 2016, Embraer delivered one midsize Legacy 500 and two light Phenom 300s in the Chinese market. These deals reflect that the Chinese consumers are getting more mature when purchasing executive jets,” said Guan. Asked how he believes Embraer is doing compared to the other business jet manufacturers, he said, “‘Market and customer driven’ should be treated as the DNA of Embraer. Compared with other executive jet manufacturers, Embraer’s advantages lie in the products that combine with good performance and economic operation. “Besides, the complete customer service and support system ensures that we can supply

them with the best service quality. In August 2016 Embraer was ranked again as first place for product support both on AIN and ProPilot [magazines], which demonstrates customers’ recognition of our products and service. This is also the base of Embraer’s development in previous years.” Government Stimulus

With all this potential, what does Guan believe is the government’s role? “The government encourages the development of general aviation and has issued several favorable policies for the development of the industry. According to ‘Guidelines on the Development of the General Aviation Industry,’ issued by the State Council, by 2020 there will be in total over 500 general aviation airports,” he said. “The situation of infrastructure construction will be greatly improved,” he suggested. “Furthermore, on March 3, the CAAC issued a document which says the approval procedures of general aviation aircraft import will be canceled. This will further stimulate the development of executive aviation.” The State Council has also adopted policies such that by 2020 a further 50 commercial airports will have been built as well, so the total number of these “will surpass 260,” said Guan. “As for general aviation, the total number will reach 500 by 2020.” AsBAA, ABACE

How important is the Asian Business Aviation Association (along with NBAA) and the ABACE annual event in helping the market to prosper? “As a professional association that promotes executive aviation culture and business, AsBAA has been playing an important role,” said Guan. “In the future, Embraer hopes that AsBAA will continue to be a bridge that links operators, OEMs, government authorities, aviation service providers, finance and insurance providers as well as business aviation users. “More importantly, it can better promote the right concept of

executive aviation as a ‘time and efficiency machine’ to more of the Chinese public.” On ABACE he supports keeping Shanghai as the location for the event; “Embraer does believe that Shanghai is the best location to hold ABACE in China, considering the economic factors, geographic factors, infrastructure construction, influence, etc.” He did not comment on whether it might be held outside China, for a wider Asian audience, but did say, “The successful organization of ABACE from 2012 to 2016 has proven [that Shanghai is a good location for the event]. ABACE is becoming one of the most influential executive aviation exhibitions in the world. Embraer in China

Turning back to Embraer itself, Guan told AIN that the company had almost 17 years of development in the executive jet business, since it entered the market in 2000 with the Legacy 600, “which was based on the mature technical platform of the ERJ145.” Now, “Embraer has become one of the leading executive jet manufacturers and the only manufacturer that produces a full line of jets, from entry level to ultra-large [the Lineage]. It has delivered more than 1,000 executive jets in the global market. “In China, Embraer delivered the first Embraer jet in the Chinese market, an ERJ145 to Sichuan Airlines. To date, Embraer has logged 190 firm orders for commercial jets in China, and 143 jets have been delivered. The economic operation and stable performance of the ERJ145 and E-Jet family have won very positive feedback from customers and passengers, and now they have taken up more than an 80 percent market share in the 70-130 seat category of the Chinese market. [This] helps more customers to get to know the quality of Embraer products and the complete customer service and support system, which helps the promotion and sales of Embraer’s executive jets in the market.” o

policies that support that effort. At the local level, Jing Yiming, president of the Shanghai Airport Authority, noted that local officials are dedicated to help business aviation take off. But he added that to ensure growth is not constrained, infrastructure must be put in place to accommodate business aviation. Local officials are in the preliminary stages of planning a “new business aviation area” that could be in addition to Shanghai Hongqiao and Pudong International Airports. Such a facility could provide a “brand-new opportunity for business aviation,” he said, adding that his hope is that the municipal government, the local airport authority and the industry can work together to advance such a project. Flexible Approach

Internationally, Stephen Creamer, director of the Air Navigation Bureau for the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), cited a need to adopt flexible policies that are more suitable for business aviation operations. He noted that ICAO has rigid rules (Annex 6 Part 1) tailored for commercial operations but a more flexible approach (Part 2) for business and general aviation that ensures an equivalent level of safety. According to Creamer, a number of aviation authorities have yet to implement Part 2 to support development of business and general aviation authorities

and encouraged attendees at the ABACE session to support that adoption on an international level. Advocating for the more flexible rules was one of three broad initiatives that Creamer offered to help foster growth of business and general aviation globally. He also noted the importance of industry stakeholders participating in association, community and government efforts. And he stressed the need to develop safety management systems. “All these activities need to be taken together,” he said. Creamer also outlined several issues that business aviation needs to pay attention to on a global scale, including the development of a cybersecurity strategy, implementation of advanced technologies and simplification in the implementation of performance-based navigation. Other speakers—including Geoff Jackson, executive director of the U.S.-China aviation cooperation program; Hanscom Smith, consul general of the U.S. Consulate General in Shanghai; and Axel Cruau, French counsel general in Shanghai— highlighted the partnerships between their countries and China to ensure development of business and general aviation and flow of products between the countries. “Its pretty clear that, thanks in part to supportive government policies, business aviation is not just growing, but is evolving and becoming more diverse [in China] in ways that are profound and encouraging,” NBAA president and CEO Ed Bolen told the audience. “Simply put, the industry is becoming ever more established in this region.” o

VistaJet rolls out WeChat platform as charter surges Eyeing a growing market in Greater China, VistaJet is launching a WeChat sales platform that will provide charter customers in the region easier access to the booking process. The first international operator to provide a booking service via WeChat, VistaJet said the platform is designed to simplify flight requests for Chinese corporations, travel department and high net worth individuals. Customers can requests for one-off charter flights or purchase blocks of flying hours, and the sales teams are available 24 hours a day through the WeChat platform. “Being global means not only flying our customers anywhere they wish to go, but also creating a service dedicated to regional cultural demands,” said VistaJet founder and chairman Thomas Flohr. “Our Chinese consumers don’t tend to use email as a primary communication tool and instead pointed us to the incredible popularity of WeChat.” The company is rolling out the platform as its sales have surged in Greater China. The region now accounts for 17 percent of VistaJet’s customer base. VistaJet credited the region for helping to propel the company to 23 percent growth in flight traffic in 2016. That growth is continuing. In the first quarter of this year, sales of flight hours are double that of the first quarter last year, VistaJet said.

VistaJet has offered domestic China flights since 2015, when it placed its first Chinese-registered aircraft into service in partnership with Apex Air. Beijing, Shenzhen, Shanghai, Tianjin and Guangzhou led the destinations in mainland China last year. The top three destinations departing from mainland China were Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Seoul. o

Hongkong Jet gets 2-Reg AOC

From humble beginnings (inset), Satcom Direct has grown to a truly international company with its global headquarters in Melbourne, Florida. Its aeroCNCT teaches aircrews to operate inflight connectivity systems.

Satcom Direct kicking off 20th anniversary festivities At ABACE 2017, U.S.-based Satcom Direct (Booth H226) is launching its 20th anniversary celebration and noting that one of the first international offices it ever opened was in Asia, years ago. “The market has supported us and grown with us,” said Nathan Andrews, the company’s regional director for Asia Pacific, “so we are delighted to begin our twentieth anniversary celebrations at the Shanghai event. As our product range diversifies, we are well placed to offer our clients an even greater range of products to improve and enhance their flight experience.” One of those new products to talk about is aeroCNCT, which is the business aviation industry’s first crewmember network and connectivity training certificate program, according to Satcom Direct. The “aero connect” program was developed to help crewmembers learn how to manage and operate airborne connectivity—satellite and air-to-ground communication—systems during flight. Its aeroCNCT program includes training on understanding airborne connectivity, the effect of handheld devices

on flight operations and how to troubleshoot basic cabin networking issues, Satcom Direct said. Emphasis is placed on Internet connection basics, network familiarization, data management, flight operations preparation and passenger device and application troubleshooting. The classroom training takes place over two days and includes hands-on practice and preparation for the examination. Students can prepare before the class begins by studying online via Choice Platform. The class is available at the customer’s site or at Satcom Direct’s headquarters in Melbourne, Florida, and the exam can be done under the supervision of a proctor at Pearson Vue testing centers or at Satcom Direct’s facility. After completing the examination, students receive a professional credential. AeroCNCT certification is valid for three years, and students can renew the training by studying online or at classes with Satcom Direct. The company also offers the aeroIT certification course as part of its airborne connectivity offerings, and this course is designed for management and aviation networking professionals. o

Airbus Corporate Jets offers Easystart for ACJ customers Airbus Corporate Jets (Chalet 5) is rolling out a new program to offer tailored support for buyers of pre-owned ACJ or government variants. Dubbed Easystart, the program is designed to provide buyers with an understanding of how Airbus corporate aircraft perform on their missions. It also walks buyers through key services, including training, support and upgrades to help ensure a smooth entry into service. These are services that the customer previously have had to find on their own, Chadi Saade, Airbus vice-president commercial, said Monday on the eve of ABACE. The program is designed to facilitate contact between a potential new customer and with Airbus, easing the process for customers, he added.

This program comes as the ACJ fleet has continued to grow and more secondhand aircraft are making their way onto the market. Airbus has delivered corporate jet versions of the A320 family since the late 1990s, and more than 180 Airbus ACJs are now in service and are based on every continent, including Antarctica. “The trend is really growing,” Saade said, noting eight pre-owned ACJs were placed last year. Facilitating those contracts are key because a number of buyers want the ACJs, but don’t want to wait the time it takes to get a new aircraft. Easystart is part of Airbus Corporate Jets’ approach of providing advice and support throughout an aircraft’s life, said Airbus COO for customers John Leahy.

Hongkong Jet (Booth H110) has received an air operator certificate (AOC) from 2-Reg, the civil aviation registry from the island of Guernsey (in the Channel Islands) for its recently formed aircraft management subsidiary BAS Guernsey. According to Denzil White, who serves as CEO of both companies along with the title of chairman of BAS Guernsey, Hongkong Jet is turning its attention to expansion outside of Asia, and he views the establishment of BAS Guernsey as a springboard to the European business aviation market. The company was informed that they had met the standards of the registry, which meets all ICAO regulations, late Sunday night, capping the three-month review process. Established in 2013, it has since registered more than 180 aircraft. In March 2016, the registry adopted new regulations that allow it to also issue registration and certificates for commercial air transport for companies that are located and registered in Guernsey, leading Hongkong Jet to establish its offices there. The first aircraft to be registered on Hongkong Jet’s AOC is one of parent

company Deer Jet’s managed aircraft, a Boeing BBJ787-8, which will be available for worldwide charter under the registration number 2-DEER. White expects to add four more business jets to the 2-Reg AOC by year-end, and another five in 2018. Among the benefits cited for the registry is its speed. “With a lot of the other traditional registrations, we’ve been quoted months as opposed to weeks in terms of registering the aircraft,” said White. It took just a week to register the BBJ 787 as 2-DEER, he said. Hongkong Jet is also anticipating the receipt of an AOC from Malaysia in the third quarter. o

WARM TO THE TOUCH Heat makes the world go ‘round, and there are few hotter spots than the inside of a turbine engine. These ABACE attendees get a close-up view of the inner workings of a turbofan at the Pratt & Whitney Canada booth.

Airbus aircraft are designed to fly several thousand hours a year over a span of 20 years or more. In corporate use, the aircraft might fly only a few hundred hours a year, strengthening the residual value, the company noted, while it added that pre-owned aircraft have “a lot to offer.” Airbus Corporate Jets considers the Asian market a particularly important one for both its used and new jets. Of the 180 ACJs delivered worldwide, more than 30 have been placed in Asia, 20 of which are in China. The manufacturer is expanding its ACJ family with the new ACJneo family. The Neos have attracted eight orders so far, including six ACJ320neos and two ACJ319neos. The Airbus 319neo, the smallest member of the Neo family, took to the skies for the first time 10 days ago. Airbus anticipates first delivery of the ACJ319neo in the second quarter of 2019, a few months after the ACJ320neo is expected to reach the market.

The next generation ACJ319/320neos are powered by either CFM International’s LEAP-1A engine or Pratt & Whitney’s PurePower PW1100G-JM, and are equipped with sharklet wingtips. The efficiency improvements provide a 11,112km (6,000-nm) range for the ACJ320neo or a 12,501-km (6,750-nm) range for the ACJ319neo. As for its widebodies, Saade noted it has “many campaigns” ongoing for the potential sales of the ACJ350, adding that he was confident that the company would soon have a commitment in hand. Airbus Corporate Jets last year introduced ACJ350 XWB with “Easyfit” provisions to smooth the cabin outfitting process. The XWB has 270 sq m (2,910 sq ft) of cabin space in the -900 version, and can fly up to 20,000 km (10,800 nm), equating to 22 hours of endurance. With Easyfit, the carbon-fiber fuselage is pre-fitted with hundreds of attachment points, which will simplify the completions process. o
