TRUE GOLD BEHIND THE GLITTER DAVID McINTOSH

As exciting as these exotic flying machines may be, the real treasure behind business aviation is its ability to deliver on its core mission–efficient, cost-effective transportation.

Facing austerity woes, bizav focuses on value by Ian Sheppard If there’s anything ABACE 2015 revealed this week, it was that the austerity heralded in a year ago by the Chinese government only changed

the way the business aviation sector is behaving outwardly, whereas the underlying excitement, potential and activity is muted by a drop, perhaps

temporary, in charter demand and aircraft deliveries. However businesses in Greater China are becoming increasingly aware of the value of business aircraft as tools, something that might help reshape the image of these aircraft from luxury toys to workhorses that save time and add value for corporations. flow of new aircraft into China. In Asia, purchase expectations favored medium and heavy helicopters, Park said. “Demand has shifted toward heavier helicopters,” he said, adding: “The lightsingle class is much less popular.” The utility of the heavier helicopters makes them more attractive to Asian buyers, Park said, but he also noted the survey does not reflect piston helicopters. As far as use, flying hours are significantly increasing in the tourism sector as China eases restrictions on flights in lowaltitude airspace. But corporate use ranks among the lowest in terms of flight hours. Intermediate and medium twin-engine helicopters ranked second worldwide in purchase plans, accounting for 31 percent. Honeywell suspects that the emerging class of supermedium helicopters, such as the AgustaWestland 189, Bell 525 and Airbus EC175, might be underrepresented given current volatility based on the energy markets. Park, however, said Honeywell does not expect fuel prices to remain depressed, and this class may see even more demand in the future. Unlike in the Asia Pacific region, the light-single class is the most popular worldwide, accounting for 49 percent of the purchase plans. o

The first two aircraft to be managed by Farnborough, UK-based Gama Aviation’s (Booth P706) new joint venture with Hutchison Whampoa, Gama Hutchison, will be Hong Kong-based Bombardier Globals, the companies announced yesterday at ABACE 2015. The aircraft owners were not disclosed. According to Gama Aviation CEO Marwan Khalek, “The Asia Pacific business aviation market has boomed in recent years, with 714 aircraft delivered across the region since 2010. The growth has been driven by demand in China and Hong Kong, and there is an increasing need for market-leading service companies to provide the requisite expertise to manage these aircraft properly.”

The Asian business aviation market is “geared toward larger aircraft, with just over a quarter [26 percent] of the current fleet comprising either heavy jets, such as the Global 5000, or jet airliners,” he added. “We are confident that we will be able to grow our managed fleet in the region and continue to offer our customers market-leading aircraft management, maintenance and support, as well as aircraft charter services, in future.” Meanwhile, Gama Aviation signed a deal this week in Shanghai to add a Gulfstream GV based in Mumbai, India, to its own managed fleet. “This is our first aircraft in India and is another landmark achievement for us,” Gama said. o

The business jet market is quite similar in these two countries. Both have young fleets–more than 70 percent of the business jets in Russia are less than 10 years old, while 60 percent of those in China are less than five years old. In addition, customers in both countries prefer large-cabin, long-range aircraft. And with Chinese buyers becoming more accepting of the concept of buying pre-owned aircraft to avoid long waiting times involved with purchasing new aircraft, ArcosJet believes cross-border deals will become more attractive between Russian sellers and Chinese buyers. According to ArcosJet, aircraft sold on behalf of Russian owners are mainly operated and maintained by major European companies under European registries, ensuring they are in good condition with a transparent ownership and flight history. –C.E.

Bombardier anticipates a $30 billion local market Han pointed to several factors positioning China for the growth in aircraft deliveries, including sustained economic expansion, growth of high net-worth individuals that are increasingly flying internationally, and continued improvement in the operating environment in the region. Currently, Bombardier has an installed fleet of 120 aircraft in China. As the fleet grows, Bombardier is expanding its support in the region. In fact, the company is finalizing contractural agreements and plans to break ground shortly on a new support center in Tianjin, according to Gary Martin, Bombardier vice president sales, marketing and service programs. Bombardier announced in November 2013 that it had signed a letter of intent for a joint venture with the Tianjin Airport Economic Area to increase maintenance services in Mainland China. This includes the development of a maintenance facility that would service Bombardier business jets and possibly commercial aircraft. The center, expected to open in 2017, will join Bombardier’s new facility in Singapore supporting business jets in the Asia

Pacific region. That facility, which opened a little more than a year ago, already has serviced 150 aircraft and obtained authorizations from 10 countries. The most recent authorization comes from India, granted just this week. The facility, which supports the range of Bombardier business aircraft, includes 3,000 sq m (32,000 sq ft) of hangar space, 3,500 sq m (38,000 sq ft) of dedicated ramp, and 3,500 sq m (38,000 sq ft) of workshop, warehouse and office space. Bombardier recently added capabilities under an agreement to house a Singapore office of interiors specialist Flying Colours at the facility. o

Bombardier Aerospace, (Static/ Chalet Display) which opened ABACE with the signing of a sale contract for a Global aircraft, is projecting a market for up to 950 business jet deliveries worth $30.9 billion into China through 2023. Michael Han, regional vice president-China for Bombardier Aerospace, announced the Global order, saying it was the culmination of an 18-month negotiating period. The manufacturer was not ready to detail the customer or exact model, but said delivery would be later this year. This latest order buoys Bombardier’s optimism for China, believing it is poised to become the third-largest region in terms of business jet deliveries over the next two decades. Over the forecast period, Bombardier forecasts that as many as 285 large-cabin business jets valued at $15.5 billion will be delivered to China. This represents 30 percent of all business jet deliveries and 50 percent of total delivery value. Medium jets, meanwhile, are expected to account for 430 deliveries to China, or 45 percent of all business jet deliveries, and $12.3 billion, or 40 percent of total delivery value.

Universal Aviation inks JV on FBO at Manila Airport by Curt Epstein Universal Weather and Aviation (Booth H325) has formed Universal Aviation Philippines, a joint venture with Asian Aerospace Corp. to manage the company’s FBO at Manila International Airport. Under the agreement, the newly-renovated facility will be rebranded as a Universal Aviation location starting in May, staffed by Universal employees, under the same procedures, protocols and training as the company’s other global locations. It marks the Texas-based company’s first foothold in the Philippines and the seventh Asia Pacific country where it will provide aircraft ground handling, according to Charlie Mularski, Universal’s regional vice president. “We are continuing to strategically expand our Universal Aviation ground support network in the Asia Pacific region at challenging locations our clients frequently request,” he said. “As one of the fastest-growing economies in the world, the Philippines is also seeing rapid growth of business aviation.” The FBO, which operates 24/7 has a hangar that can accommodate aircraft up to a Gulfstream G550, and is the only private aviation facility at the airport to offer both direct ramp-side and streetside access. The 5,276-sq-m (56,790-sq-ft) terminal has

four passenger lounges and the crew-dedicated Philippine Clipper lounge on the second floor, which offers an airport ramp view along with a private pantry and shower facility. On-site customs and immigrations clearance is available either planeside or in the terminal, depending on time of day, with after-hours call out available. “We’re bringing our know-how and network power to enhance their services and really open up a Western brand into that market,” Mularski told AIN. While the name on the FBO will change, Asian Aerospace will continue to have a presence at the airport through its aircraft charter and MRO operations. The company also has hangars at Cebu International Airport and Clark International Airport, which will have Universal ground handling personnel stationed as well under the joint venture, according to Mularski. Overall, Universal provides ground-handling services at more than 40 locations in 20 countries worldwide. o

BBJ’S LONGRIDGE SEES SALES MOMENTUM CONTINUING

DAVID McINTOSH

Boeing Business Jets is hoping to build on momentum from last year, when the division sold a record 13 aircraft, including four widebodies, and delivered ten. “Last year was a very good year for BBJ,” said David Longridge, speaking at ABACE for the first time as president of the company. Longridge late last year succeeded Steve Taylor at the helm. A 21-year Boeing veteran, he returned to the division that he first joined during its infancy in 1996, when he served as a sales director for almost two years. But after concentrating on the airline market for a number of years, Longridge is happy to jump back into the business jet arena. “It is one of the most fascinating corners of the aviation world,” he said. Overall he is pleased by the balance of sales. While interest has been strong in widebodies, the BBJ is “what butters our bread,” he said. Of the 228 VIP aircraft sold, the BBJ accounts for 164. Boeing has been steadily building up completion capacity to accommodate both wide- and narrow-bodied aircraft. The company has a network of 18 authorized completion centers capable of accommodating the BBJ, and 10 that can handle widebodies. A number of them have work under way. Boeing expects that four 747s will come out the pipeline this year along with one or two 787s. “This is going to be a great year for big aircraft,” said Longridge, who added that he’s been “pleasantly surprised” by the –K.L. level of sales activity this year.

order announcements were lacking this week in Shanghai, there have been an increasing number of joint ventures and previously announced ventures coming to fruition. The next few years should see these take root and with them the entire industry will start to bloom on a broader basis. And as the Asian Business Aviation Association (AsBAA) starts to find its footing, it is to be expected that the industry will find a single voice on various issues that create

obstacles to development. Charlie Mularski, the new chairman of AsBAA (as of this week), told AIN, “The anti-corruption cloud [in China] is really targeting high-end luxury items, and sadly business aircraft fall into that. But the point is that it is not a luxury item, it’s a tool– so how can we persuade the authorities and the public of this?” He recognized that there had been an impact on orders and deliveries in China, but said AsBAA is determined to have its own “No Plane, No Gain” drive–“but the reason for it here is to fight the stigma.” Another question then is whether ABACE itself, as

the main annual forum and showcase for business aviation in China and the wider Asia Pacific region, can in fact encompass the whole region and be less China-centric. While the People’s Republic represents an incredible engine for driving industry growth, it will be as a wider region that real progress is made. Certainly, international entities coming to ABACE are expending a lot of time and effort coming to the key “Asian” business aviation event, and want to be able to meet and interact with representatives of the business aviation sector from all over the world, where they have interests in the Asia Pacific. o

Avic relishing its role as Nextant’s sales rep by James Wynbrandt Avic International Aero-Development Corp. (Avic ADE; Booth P102, Static Display), exclusive sales representative in the Greater China region for Nextant Aerospace, U.S.-based business aircraft remanufacturer, is displaying here at ABACE a Beechcraft King Air C90 turboprop twin–the platform for Nextant’s latest product, the G90XT. When their partnership was announced at ABACE last year, Avic ADE was expected to take delivery of a Nextant 400XTi, a remanufactured Beechjet 400A/ XP light jet, by the end of 2014. Since it’s remanufactured from an existing aircraft, the 400XTi, powered by Williams FJ44-3AP engines and featuring a Rockwell Collins Pro Line 21 integrated flight deck, it costs about half the price of new aircraft in the light jet category, according to Nextant. But due to customer demand in other parts of the world, no 400XTi is yet available for Avic ADE, said Wu Jianghua, the company’s senior business aviation sales manager. However, China’s first 400XTi is on the way and a customer is waiting in the wings, said Jianghua. “The aircraft was completed just this month, but we could not get it in time for ABACE.” Nonetheless, during the past year Avic ADE helped Nextant receive CAAC certification and arranged the agreement appointing maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) provider Staeco (Beijing) Business Jet Maintenance Co. ALLPOINTS JET IS AN ABACE POSTER CHILD AllPoints Jet (Booth P712) has grown up with ABACE. Its first aircraft order was announced at the first rebooted ABACE in 2012, and the Gulfstream G450 (pictured here at the show) was delivered a year later at ABACE 2013. The company has since added a G550 to its charter operation and last year put more than 800 mostly international flight hours on the pair. This year, the Chengdu-based operator added a privately-owned G550 to –C.E. its certificate.

China, expected to be operational in the first quarter of 2016. Avic ADE hopes to make “one or two” 400XTi deliveries this year, Jianghua said. Meanwhile, Jianghua expects the G90XT to make a big splash in China. “Chinese customers are very excited by this product. A lot of C90s are in China right now, but due to design they cannot satisfy CAAC Part 135 charter regulations.” The G90XT, however, will meet these standards, greatly increasing their potential commercial applications. FAA certification of the G90XT is expected this month, and CAAC approval is expected at the end of this year or early 2016. Nextant completely guts, strips, and essentially “zero times” each airframe before installing new engines, avionics and interiors, and then repainting them. As remanufactured aircraft, CAAC certifies Nextant with a VSTC (verified supplemental type certificate) rather than the VTC (verified type certificate) it bestows upon original aircraft it approves. Nextant is now developing its third remanufactured product. “They’re going to do a large business jet,” said Jianghua, citing Avic ADE’s discussions with Nextant. Speculation has focused on the Gulfstream GIV as the platform. Whatever the model, Avic ADE will be ready to offer it to customers in the region. “Our relationship is solid,” said Jianghua. “Nextant trusts us in our ability for sales and marketing in China.” o

Eclipse Aviation and Kestrel Aircraft announced a merger yesterday, forming ONE Aviation Corp., which will be led by Cirrus Aircraft co-founder Alan Klapmeier. Its core products include the Eclipse 550 very light jet and Kestrel K350 turboprop single. It plans to design, develop and manufacture a family of aircraft. “Combining the synergies of Eclipse and Kestrel under the leadership of [CEO] Alan Klapmeier is a perfect fit. Customers will appreciate Alan’s vision and his prior experience in leading the design, development, and production of one of the world’s most successful aircraft programs,” said Mason Holland, chairman of ONE Aviation. The Eclipse is currently in production and the Kestrel K350 is under development. n

Dassault is upgrading Falcon support in Asia Dassault Aviation detailed the latest improvements to its customer support in the region here at ABACE 2015 on Monday. The airframer’s Beijing-based Asia Pacific customer service base was set up in 2013 to provide support services for both local and transient operators, and the office currently has seven employees who have established relations with all the local Falcon operators. According to Kathy Liu, the company’s director of customer service for Asia Pacific, among the facility’s responsibilities are fieldservice support through locations in Beijing, Hong Kong, Singapore, Mumbai and Shanghai, as well as parts supply with warehouses in Singapore (the largest in the region with $40 million in spares inventory), Beijing, Hong Kong,

Chennai and Sydney. The regional service division also supports customers at the regional service centers that include Hong Kong, Singapore (the largest in the region), Mumbai and Sydney. Here in Shanghai, ABACE host Shanghai Hawker Pacific Business Aviation Service Centre is an authorized repair provider and Dassault has two highly experienced technicians positioned at the facility to handle aircraft-on-ground situations throughout the region. An agreement signed Monday between Deer Jet, which operates seven Falcon 7X trijets, and Dassault saw the establishment of a new China service center at Beijing Capital Airport that will provide maintenance and AOG support for the model. o

Bizav heads to Geneva for EBACE next month by Mark Phelps Next month, the business aviation industry meets again, this time for the European Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (EBACE) in Geneva, Switzerland. Conducted in cooperation with the European Business Aviation Association and the U.S. National Business Aviation Association, the show kicks off on May 19 and runs for three days. This year marks the 15th annual EBACE show. In addition to exhibit halls filled with more than 500 exhibitors in the Palexpo conference center and ramp chocked with more than 50 aircraft on the static display at the adjacent Geneva International Airport, a series of education, networking and advocacy meetings are scheduled to mark the milestone. More than 13,000 attendees are expected. Chris Strong, senior v-p of conventions and membership, oversees the event for NBAA. He said, “Obviously, the business aviation community has faced significant challenges over the past decade and a half, but we’ve also experienced great innovation in equipment, safety and management methodology. These innovations will be celebrated at EBACE 2015.” Even before the event officially kicks off, there will be a one-day EBACE Safety Workshop on Monday, May 18. Mayfair-theme interiors tap into British elegance

‘Flying Apartments’

Brand Awareness

The design is an outgrowth of two trends, said AWD’s Jim Dixon: “Chinese clientele like English style,” while “a new breed of heavily branded London hotels such as Armani and Bulgari are making inroads, particularly among the more youthful clientele we’re finding here in China. It’s slightly different from the rest of the world. They’re very brand aware.” Jason Liao–co-founder, chairman and CEO of China Business Aviation Group, parent of CBAJet–said the company is “pleased to be collaborating with Andrew Winch Designs on Project Mayfair. Their design quality, proven record and client-focussed approach, combined with the standard configuration, will enable us to deliver unique and luxurious aircrafts for clients in a shorter timeframe.” More design collaborations may be forthcoming. Concluded Winch, “We are thrilled to be working in partnership with CBAJet on the Project Mayfair design, and look forward to creating future aircraft designs with them.” o

DAVID McINTOSH

The interior’s angled bulkheads create an impressive entrance vestibule to what AWD calls a “flying apartment,” and the main cabin space includes a circular dining table and circular bar area with a faux skylight. Recognizing the importance of Asian social culture, the round dining table easily converts into a Mah Jong table, while the adjoining lounge and main cabin area is highly flexible, capable of serving as an office, cinema or for other uses. The rear cabin includes a

fully appointed master suite and bathroom. Despite all having the same cabin configuration, the Mayfair’s bespoke materials and tailored detailing offer “an uncompromising palette to the owner’s individual taste and personal expression,” according to AWD. The Mayfair design ethos extends to the exterior of the aircraft, where complementary livery creates a “maximum ramp presence” projecting the “youthful aesthetic” of the design concept.

The Mayfair interior series from Andrew Winch Designs is inspired by hotels in London’s most exclusive district. Clients can select from AWD’s elegant materials or choose their own.

LEKTRO CONTINUES GROWTH WITH EMBRAER Lektro (Booth P115) recently secured Embraer approval for use of its largest aircraft tug on the ERJ-135, 140 and 145. The tug, AP8950SDB-AL-200, was introduced in 2013, marking the 70-year-old company’s expansion into the major airline/bizliner markets. Lektro credits this expansion for a 65-percent surge in sales last year. The company said it remains on pace for a continued pick-up this year. The tug received Airbus and Boeing clearance seven months ago for use on the manufacturers’ respective A320 and 737 aircraft families. It is capable of towing up to a 210,000-pound (95,250 kg) aircraft and was designed to carry a variety of aircraft, from the Bombardier Dash 8/Q400 up to the Airbus A321 and Boeing 737-900ER. Lektro already targeted the regional aircraft market with its AP8700 and AP8800 tugs and has a strong presence in the business jet segment, with approvals from Bombardier, Dassault, Embraer Gulfstream, Pilatus and Textron Aviation, among others. It also sells its tugs for military applications. The Portland, Oregon-based company delivered its 4,300th tug to Million Air in Calgary, Canada, last year. –K.L.

Honeywell’s visual tech is on stage here The future is here at Honeywell Aerospace’s ABACE 2015 display (Booth H529) as the company showcases a pair of visual technology innovations demonstrating its avionics and cabin connectivity solutions. Choose the cabin view, and experience the company’s Ovation Select cabin management system (CMS), K-Band connectivity and additional communication and entertainment offerings. Occulus Rift was created as a sales tool, providing customers with a virtual introduction to the company’s products, said Julie Curtis, Honeywell’s events and tradeshow manager. Honeywell worked with the developer of the visualization system to adapt the technology for Honeywell’s needs.

Created for Airbus Corporate Jet (ACJ) and Boeing Business Jet (BBJ) narrowbodies, the Mayfair interior merges a Saville Row attention to classic British elegance with the efficiencies of a pre-prepared design. A key advantage is that “it will offer clients their own design, but also a reduction in cost to buy, engineer and design, and a short turnaround time from purchase of a green aircraft,” said Andrew Winch, AWD’s founder. The Mayfair interior’s visual styling features dark high-gloss veneers, golden onyx, Qing upholstery and leatherwork, satin almond gold fixtures and Loro Piana cashmere. Alternatively, clients can choose their own combination of materials and textures.

Also showcased at the Honeywell display is a Google Glass prototype solution the company developed that can raise and lower window shades, adjust temperature and lights, and control all other functions on its Ovation Select CMS via voice or by touching the frame of the glasses. William Rowell, senior manager, technical sales, cabin systems at Honeywell Business & General Aviation, noted Google has withdrawn Google Glass from the market, and Honeywell is now developing a similar control for the Apple Watch, which the company believes is a better interface device than are glasses. In other news, Honeywell Aerospace also announced signing an agreement here at ABACE with aviation services provider Hawker Pacific to

provide DU-875 Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) upgrades for the Primus Elite Flight Deck aboard Embraer Legacy 600s. The installations, to being in the second quarter of this year, will be performed at Hawker Pacific’s Singapore facility, making it the first maintenance, repair and overhaul provider in Asia Pacific to perform the upgrade. –J.W. Aircraft cabin interior specialists find ABACE an ideal showroom by James Wynbrandt The interior of today’s business jet is a marvel of design and engineering, combining artistry, ingenuity, practicality, and luxury. OEMs invest heavily to stay ahead of the competition in delivering cabin comfort and style, yet the custom cabin community, the specialists that complete new and refurbish old executive aircraft, often set the pace on interior innovation and aesthetics. The following article highlights what some of the world’s leading completions and refurbishment companies are showcasing at ABACE here in Shanghai. Amac Aerospace is a few weeks away from finishing a lavish completion of an Airbus ACJ319 for an undisclosed Chinese customer. The company’s Basel, Switzerland, facility has also been busy working on a head-of-state/VVIP-configured Boeing 747-8 for an owner based in the Middle East and it also recently started working on its third VIP Boeing 777 completion. The group’s success in both the completions and maintenance fields has prompted further expansion plans in Basel, where it intends to open a fourth hangar in October 2015. The addition of the 78,364-sq-ft (7,289 sq-m) building will increase Amac’s overall hangar space by 35 percent, giving space for additional workshops, offices and storage areas. It will be able to accommodate one widebody jet or a pair of narrowbodies. The ACJ319 now being finished is the second of its type that Amac has completed, and its 12th airliner-class completion since its launch back in 2007. The design features extensive use of carbon fiber that has involved extensive materials research by the company’s engineering team. Amac also holds maintenance approvals for various Boeing, Airbus, Bombardier and Gulfstream aircraft. From its facility in Istanbul, Turkey, it also provides support for the Pilatus PC-12 and Dassault Falcons.

U.S. affiliate leverages its parent company’s global MRO reach, with facilities in Guangzhou, Xiamen and Singapore, to help service customers in China and in the Asia Pacific region. Based in San Antonio, a capital of completions centers, Aeria’s 100,000-sq-ft hangar is currently at full capacity, the company said, and a 21,000sq-ft expansion for a two-story cabinetry and upholstery shop, and sales/marketing and design building is in the works. What a difference a year has made for Bombardier completion specialist Flying Colours (Booth H320), here at ABACE for the fourth time. After last year’s gathering, the Canadian company partnered with China’s Sparkle Roll Aviation to work jointly on aircraft refurbishment projects, and this year the company is touting the first project-in-progress, the conversion of eight CRJs into executive aircraft. Flying Colours’ ExecLiner conversions and green Challenger 850 completions, along with its experience dealing with the CAAC, make it a good partner, said Eric Gillespie, the company’s v-p. “Our understanding of the certification paperwork, registration process, STCs and extensive modification knowledge complemented [Sparkle Roll’s] ambitions to further develop this sector of their aviation business,” added Gillespie. The conversions will be performed at Flying Colours’ facility in Peterborough, Canada, with the interiors ranging from executive configuration to shuttle. Sparkle Roll technicians are undergoing training in completion processes and techniques, and will assist in the conversions at the facility. The first

three 850s have been inducted and will be finished as mixedclass, with half corporate shuttle, half VIP combo interiors. The interiors of the remaining five, due at the facility this spring, are still being finalized. All will feature Ebony Black seat leather, and black trim with rose-gold plating, and an exterior custom SR Jet scheme with in mauve palette. The long term plan calls for transferring the conversion work to China. Flying Colours is also celebrating the February opening of its Singapore maintenance, repair and overhaul facility, which includes a full finishing shop for woodwork, upholstery shop, and paint spray booth. “There’s a lot of demand in the Asia Pacific region” for completion and refurbishment services, said Gillespie. Two projects have already been completed: A Challenger 605 softgoods and woodwork refurbishing (restaining and refinishing); and an upholstery refurbishment on a Bombardier Global. A team of about a dozen is on site, combining four technicians from the home office to assist with the transition, and local employees the company has hired and is training. “The idea is to have a 100 percent local workforce,” Gillespie said. “The skilled people are good, they just need training in business aviation.”

China Expansion Zurich-based Comlux (Booth P132), well known for its global charter and aircraft management services, is also showcasing here at ABACE 2015 its cabin completion and refurbishment capabilities. The company has been gaining traction in China in all three categories since opening its Hong Kong office in 2012. Comlux’s entrée to completions in the region came through its acquisitions services. Following its involvement in the

sale of three aircraft, the client selected Comlux for the completions “just after the signatures” went on the sales contract, said Richard Gaona, Comlux president and CEO. “It was a good entry into the market.” In the last year, Comlux America, the company’s completions and service center in Indianapolis, Indiana, signed two contracts (for a green ACJ320 completion and BBJ refurbishment) and delivered two green completions (a BBJ and ACJ321) for customers in Asia. The new BBJ cabin features “ultra-modern” custom electric POD seats created by Iacobucci, and four different configurations with lounges and offices that convert to bedrooms. The ACJ321 is the first of its type ever completed, according to Comlux. Working against an “extremely strict timeline for redelivery,” Comlux America not only met the schedule, but beat the weight and sound-level targets. Last month, Scott Meyer, former COO, was named CEO of the U.S. facility. Comlux is also currently performing a BBJ cabin completion for an aircraft purchased by Hyundai, as well as an ACJ319 refurbishment for a regional customer. Here at the show, Airbus Corporate Jets has a Comluxcompleted and operated ACJ319 on static display, used to illustrate the refinement, craftsmanship and comfort of today’s ultimate executive transports. While Comlux’s ACJ and BBJ completions garner lots of attention, Gaona noted the company also has extensive experience with Bombardier and Dassault, “and we’ll operate our first [Gulfstream] G650 in a couple of weeks,” he said.

Gulfstream’s director, product support business and program support. Huhn noted that as the aircraft OEM, Gulfstream can offer a warranty on its refurbishments. Additionally, “We can make refurbishment decisions with the best possible understanding of how the aircraft was designed, certified and built,” he said. “The OEM’s product

knowledge and intellectual property rights mean it can make more informed and better decisions about modifications and more accurate predictions of the upgrades that will impact aircraft performance and safety.” Huhn also pointed to a benefit specific to Gulfstream: its private-label Gulfstream Portfolio Collection of fabrics, leathers

and carpets. “These carefully curated materials shorten the lead time and cost for a cabin refurbishment because they are in stock,” he said. Haeco Private Jet Solutions (HPJS, Booth P310), based in Hong Kong, is showcasing its new “Xiao Yao” design concept for the ACJ (Airbus Corporate

Jet) shown at ABACE for the first time. It brings feng shui principles used in traditional Chinese architecture to the executive-configured airliner cabin. These principles are expressed in the interior’s curving lines, the relative positioning of living and sleeping areas, and the balance of the “five elements” of fire,

earth, metal, water and wood. “We have not seen designs that are of genuine heritage and based on the respected philosophy of ancient Chinese philosophers,” said Henry Chan, HPJS’s v-p commercial. Haeco offers several other signature narrowbody designs. “Auspicious Clouds,” for the A319, incorporates colors, symbols and patterns associated with good fortune, the deep red of its carpet representing happiness and pleasure, while the woven cloud pattern suggests success. The inspiration for “Panda,” another A319 interior, is evident in its black and white color scheme, and the generous curve of the seats. “Lingering Garden,” or Liu Yuan, for the BBJ, features rich earth tones and was designed to create a feeling of wholeness and freely flowing style.

HPJS performs completions at Haeco Xiamen, its MRO facility at East Gaoqi International Airport in Xiamen, the only facility in Asia that is both an Airbus and Boeing approved completion center. Jet Aviation (Booth H331), which provides a complete suite of aviation services from a score of facilities throughout the world, including Hong Kong, is highlighting here at ABACE the recent expansion of its Singapore facility, which has moved into new quarters. John Riggir, v-p and general manager, Jet Aviation Singapore, reports all regulatory approvals have been successfully transferred, and battery, wheel and interior refurbishment approvals have been added to the FAA certificate. MRO work on larger, heavy maintenance projects that encompass refurbishment work is increasing. “Now that JSIN can offer excellent interior and exterior refurbishments and avionics upgrades in a ‘one stop shop’ environment, our proposition is becoming more attractive to regionally based customers, versus flying to the USA or Europe,” Riggir said. “We are also experiencing increased demand from the maturing fleet of long-range large-cabin aircraft that are

based in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Jakarta.” Jet Aviation is still aglow from its selection last month by Boeing Business Jets to complete the interiors of two Boeing 777-300ER aircraft for an undisclosed client in Asia. Slated to begin immediately, the project is scheduled for completion in Q3 2018. Lufthansa Technik (LHT, Booth P118), the German completions and refurbishment specialist, is presenting here in Shanghai its entire range of VIP products and services, said Florian Krauthoff, director sales Asia, VIP and special mission aircraft. The focal point of the company’s display (Booth P118) is a scale model of a B747-8 executive airliner, being shown at ABACE–and in Asia–for the first time. The cutaway top enables attendees to see in miniature LHT’s boundary-pushing interior design and technology integration. LHT is also highlighting its trio of completion offerings: “Executive Shuttle,” “Leadership Select,” and fully customized, highly individualized VIP cabin interiors solutions. The “Executive Shuttle” concept offers more than 20 different cabin layouts for the A320 and Boeing 737 families for executive shuttle services, with seating configurations ranging from 20 to 50-plus passengers. The interiors allow customers to provide executive shuttle service for their topmanagement while at the same time providing special guests an exclusive on-board ambience. The “Leadership Select” concept allows VIP customers to combine a multitude of different pre-customized cabin elements to create an almost completely individualized VIP cabin layout. ACJ319 owners, for example, can choose from 96 layout variations, and 720 combinations are available for the longer BBJ2 and other comparable aircraft. For clients who want the ultimate in customization, Lufthansa Technik can handle all aspects of design, production and installation of executive interiors meeting the highest standards of innovation, artistry and craftsmanship, Krauthoff said. Also for the first time in Asia, LHT is showing its new seat, called simply “chair,” designed in association with renowned aircraft interior designer Jacques Pierrejean. “It’s not just another seat, but a revolution in seating,” Krauthoff said. Passengers want something new at the highest level.”

Additionally LHT is presenting its E-configuration tools for pre-customized cabin designs, which show 3D views of aircraft interior configurations, simplifying the mixing, matching and selection of interior design elements. Sharing space with LHT is the company’s narrowbody completion division, U.S.-based

Bizjet International (BJI), which has completion news of its own. BJI presently has three narrowbody aircraft undergoing completions for Chinese customers, said CEO Manfred Gaertner. delivery, as we went to press. A head-of-state BBJ2 is midway through completion, and a green ACJ319 has just been received, with completion work scheduled to commence in Q3 of this year. One of the three completions features “the first electric mahjong table on an aircraft,” Gaertner said. Another features upholstery created in collaboration with a French design house. Nonetheless, the Central Government’s austerity campaign, corruption crackdown, and cooling economy have chilled demand for luxury completions, and “prospects on the market right now are not looking into the VVIP segment or price range, so we speak about converting existing aircraft into executive-style VIP aircraft,” Gaertner said, echoing sentiments expressed by many. “People are really looking for more economical choices for VIP cabins.” Separately, maintenance group Ameco Beijing, which is a joint venture between Air China and Lufthansa, opened a new hangar dedicated to business aircraft completions and repairs. The new facility can accommodate one widebody aircraft and three narrowbodies simultaneously and also has interiors workshops. The company (Booth H215) has been involved in VIP completions of Boeing and Airbus aircraft in China since the 1990s. It now offers a comprehensive service covering all aspects of design, engineering, manufacturing, installation and certification of cabin interiors. U.S.-based executive airliner completion and maintenance specialist Pats Aircraft Systems (Booth P728) is celebrating here at the show its “long history of success in the Asia Pacific region and China in particular,” said Matthew Hill, v-p business development. “We’re highlighting our experience over the years with 25 full, VVIP interior projects in the category, including three active BBJ interior completion projects, all of which have customers based in the Asia Pacific region.” Pats is “focused on finding cost effective ways to support the large and growing existing fleet of operating VVIP aircraft,” Hill said, including creating new solutions to update and upgrade antiquated systems. Additionally, Pats is “now

making substantial inroads in China and the larger region” in providing ODA (Organization Designation Authorization), certification and engineering services as a distinct, standalone offering, Hill said. “The service can be expanded to include the certification engineering to create the plan to satisfy the regulations and, more broadly, can include actual component or systems/integration engineering, kit manufacturing and assembly and installation services.” Pats’ ODA has recently been delegated ICA authority, which means even greater control by Pats ODA over STC approval schedules, Hill said. “With the hundreds of STCs issued by Pats’ ODA over the years, we have broad and extensive experience receiving foreign regulatory approvals for STCs in China and worldwide including validations of our industry leading Auxiliary Fuel System STCs in just about every region where customers register aircraft.” Wipaire (Booth P315), U.S.based manufacturer of aircraft floats, has expanded its services to include custom refurbishment of floatplane interiors. These services are likely to become more in demand as the acceptance of floatplanes increases in China, exemplified by the CAAC’s approval a year ago for the Cessna Grand Caravan (which are now produced in China by CessnaAVIC Aircraft (Shijiazhuang) Co., Ltd.) to operate on floats.

“We have offered executive interiors for the Caravan series for years but have added cabinet-making capability inhouse to support our existing soft goods capabilities,” said Amy Gesch, Wipaire’s marketing manager, promising more announcements shortly. “In 2015, we are planning on some new interiors offerings.” Italy’s Delta Interior (Booth P104) highlights its bespoke, Italian-style expertise in interior design, development and construction. Best of all for local customers, Delta now offers its services in Shanghai through the Shanghai Hawker Pacific Service Centre, where the company has opened an interior shop providing carpet change, panel reupholstery, crew-seat refurbishment and more. U.S.-based Aeristo (Booth P414) is displaying its high-end aviation leathers, all from South German bull hides, and highlighting its leather quilting, custom perforation, embossing, splitting and skiving services. China Aircraft Maintenance & Engineering Co. (Booth P318), China’s first maintenance, repair and overhaul specialist for small and midsize aircraft in China, and its first privately owned facility, is showcasing its full suite of refurbishment capabilities, including component design and engineering services, interior design and installation. o

Sparkle Roll wins role as Aerion sales agent be comparable to current ultralong-range business jet offerings, Aerion said. While the minimum projected range is 8,797 km (4,750 nm), Aerion is aiming for 9,816 km (5,300 nm). Its trijet configuration yields better runway performance and a lower noise profile, which is “especially important with Stage 5 noise requirements looming,” Aerion CEO Doug Nichols told AIN. The company is currently in discussions with “leading engine suppliers” to find the optimum core engine for adaptation to supersonic requirements. The selected engine core will be in the 15,000-pound-thrust range–a list that includes the Pratt & Whitney Canada PW800, GE Passport and Rolls-Royce BR710. Inside, the aircraft’s cabin will have a cross-section dimension nearly identical to that of the Gulfstream G550, sharing the same 1.88-meter (6-foot 2-inch) height though the AS2’s Aerion’s supersonic business jet will be sold in Asia Pacific by Sparkle Roll.

base for the AS2 and will play a key role in introducing routine supersonic flight in China and beyond,” said Aerion co-chairman Brian Barents. “Chinese business leaders will save hours on every longrange flight in the AS2 versus a subsonic jet,” noted Mr. Li Xuefeng, chairman of Sparkle Roll Technik Co. Ltd. and executive director/CEO of Sparkle Roll Aviation (Holding) Group. “There is no question that the benefit of substantially greater speed will be highly valued by aviation users in our markets.” SSBJ Attributes

The AS2 will have two cruise “sweet spots,” where range and efficiency are at a maximum– one at about Mach 0.95 Mach, for efficient cruise where supersonic flight is prohibited; and one at about Mach 1.4. At both speeds, total operating cost will

width is just a fraction narrower at 2.21 meters (7 foot 3 inches). The 9.14-meter-long (30 foot) cabin, which is 5.18 meters (17 feet) shorter than the G550’s, will feature a two-lounge layout, galley and both forward and aft lavatories, as well as a baggage compartment that is accessible in-flight. Outside, the AS2’s fuselage is 48.77 meters (160 feet) long, with a wingspan of 21.24 meters (70 feet). According to Aerion, the AS2’s balanced field length is 2,286 meters (7,500 feet) at its 52,160-kg (115,000-pound) mtow. However, this can be lowered to 1,829 meters (6,000 feet) at takeoff weights below 45,360 kg (100,000 pounds) to allow for operations at airports with shorter runways or weight restrictions while retaining a transatlantic range of 7,408 km (4,000 nm). This would permit the AS2 to operate from major business aviation hubs

THINK OF THE PLACES YOU’LL GO In Western countries, civil aviation grew from the grass roots up. A small private jet, like this developmental Cirrus Vision SF50, represents a big step up for most pilots. In China, the reverse is true. Aviation is first thought of as an airline-only activity. In future, it is hoped that personal flying in aircraft like the SF50 will be the norm.

with 1,524- to 1,829-meter (5,000 to 6,000-foot) runways. Airbus Collaboration

In September, Airbus Group and Aerion announced a partnership agreement to collaborate on “technologies associated with the future of high-performance flight.” Under the agreement, both companies will exchange knowledge and capabilities in aircraft design, manufacturing and certification. For Aerion, this means collaboration to further develop and bring to market the AS2. “This agreement accomplishes two major objectives,” said Aerion CEO Doug Nichols. “It provides validation from the industry leader in aerospace innovation, and it decisively kicks the program into high gear. Aerion moves quickly toward building a supersonic jet, and Airbus Group gains exclusive access to our research and technology.” Under the agreement, Airbus Group’s Defense and Space division will provide technical and certification support, including the assignment of senior engineering staff to Aerion’s development organization. Notably, the collaboration provides expanded engineering capabilities to Aerion. Over the longer term, “Airbus gains exclusive access to Aerion proprietary research and technology, and to proprietary multi-disciplinary design tools whose accuracy has been validated in flight tests,” Nichols said. These technologies include Aerion’s extensive research in natural laminar flow airfoils, design tools and patented aerodynamic designs. o

King Air sim on order for Chinese university FlightSafety International received an order from the Civil Aviation University of China (CAUC) to design and manufacture a King Air C90GTx fullmotion simulator. The device, which is expected to receive level D qualification from China’s CAAC, will be an integral part of the university’s ab initio pilot training programs. Delivery to the university’s Chaoyang City, Liaoning Province, campus is slated for the first quarter of 2016. “FlightSafety was selected to build the King Air C90GTx simulator due to the quality and value they provide, and their excellent reputation in China,” said Xu Jianxing, president of Chaoyang Flight College, part of CAUC. “We look forward to using the simulator to help meet

the ongoing strong demand for pilots in China.” The new FlightSafety FS1000 simulator features integrated computer hardware and software that allow for accurate, high-fidelity simulation. It offers a new multi-function instructor operating station that enhances the effectiveness of training by providing an intuitive interface, scalable graphics and large touchscreen displays. The simulator will be equipped with FlightSafety’s Vital 1100 visual system, electric motion control and cueing. To date, New York-based FlightSafety has delivered more than 1,000 visual systems and 800 flight simulators and other training devices to customers around the world. –C.T.

When Airbus launched the A340 in 1991, the wholesale price of a gallon of jet-A fuel was 55 cents. In February 2014 it was $2.97. However, it spiked at $3.89 in July 2008, and that’s when the world’s airlines began parking their A340s and shortening their routes to enable them to use more fuel-efficient twinjets such as the Airbus A330 and Boeing 777. Today, more than 50 A340s are in storage. Airbus shut down the A340 production line in 2011 after 377 were made. The bulk of these (218) are Dash 300 series—fitted in airline configuration with seating for up to 295 passengers and a range of 12,408 kilometers (6,700 nm). Airlines Thinking in ‘Twos’

Values of used A340s are still plunging, even though they’re well equipped, relatively new and burn only marginally more fuel than comparable twinjets. But for airlines, pennies count, sometimes disproportionately, occasionally illogically. This is how crazy it has become: the A330 twinjet and A340 share a

fuselage, have nearly identical wings and carry about the same number of passengers. Indeed, the aircraft were developed in tandem and use many of the same parts. Nevertheless, an A330 of identical vintage sells for up to four times as much as an A340, simply because it burns slightly less fuel. (However, new-generation widebody twinjets such as Airbus’s 350XWB and the Boeing 787 are up to 30 percent more fuel efficient than an A340.) Airline actuaries are focused on only one equation: four engines equals bad. I disagree. Most of the world remains covered with water and a twinjet traversing it is governed by the doctrine of ETOPS, or extended-range twin operations, something of a complex formula with a simple implication: if one of the two engines quits or a major aircraft system fails, you likely will be required to divert to an airport that is not your destination. And there’s a long list of countries near large bodies of water where you wouldn’t want to do this if you are a wealthy or highprofile individual. With four engines, you could continue to your destination at the pilot’s discretion.

“You can do more with four,” quips David Velupillai, the marketing director for Airbus Corporate Jets. Because of the huge price chasm between a twin widebody and the A340, the extra-fuel-burn argument is a non-starter. Assuming you pay full retail for fuel, an A340 carries direct operating costs of around $14,000 an hour on the Dash 200s and $21,000 an hour on the long-range Series 500. One in private hands would be unlikely to be used even 400 hours per year. And Airbus and engine-maker Rolls-Royce are working diligently to bring costs down. Rolls recently announced an improved support program and engine modifications designed to cut maintenance expenses and reduce fuel burns to levels that rival those of a twinjet widebody. Airbus, on the hook for potentially $2 billion in resale price guarantees on the A340, is moving to end the fire sale by attempting to get the airplane approved to carry up to 475 passengers, about 35 more than its current capacity in airline configuration. Doing that requires removal of the mid-cabin galley and lavatory and it remains to be seen how many airlines will find that option attractive—their passengers certainly will not. A340s will never return to robust resale prices, but for those who want a truly insane discount, time might be running out.

A340s come in four main variants—the Dash 200, 300, 500 and 600 models—starting with footprints that are nearly 61 meters long (200 ft) and a wingspan of almost 61 meters (200 ft) and proceeding to 75.29 meters long (247 ft) and a wingspan of 63.40 meters (208 ft), with maximum takeoff weights of 274,876 to 381,018 kilograms (606,000 to 840,000 lbs). Outfitted in mixed-class configuration, the A340-200 came fitted to carry 240 to 261 passengers with a range of 15,000 kilometers (8,100 nm); both it and the slightly larger A340-300 are powered by CFM56 engines, with maximum thrust levels of 25,000 to 34,000 pounds each. Both models of aircraft have been fitted for VVIP usage, with the latter being operated by the German government. The larger A340500 and 600 variants are powered by the

A340s will never return to robust resale prices, but for those who want a truly insane discount, time may be running out. Rolls-Royce Trent series 500 engines, with 54,000 pounds of thrust each. The 500 was the world’s longest-range commercial aircraft at its introduction in 2002, able to carry 313 passengers 16,020 kilometers (8,650 nm); in VVIP configuration that range can be increased to 18,335 kilometers (9,900 nm). At just over 75 meters (247 ft), the 600 remains the world’s longest airliner, and it can carry 379 passengers 13,890 kilometers (7,500 nm). Both the 500 and 600 are so massive that they have cameras to help pilots navigate during ground taxi. Airbus made 28 Dash 200s, 218 Dash 300s, 34 Dash 500s and 97 Dash 600s. Due to their range, the 500s appear to be the most desirable aircraft for conversion to VVIP configuration, a process that can take up to two years and—depending on the opulence of material selection and features—cost more than $100 million. However, Airbus has developed a refurbishment option called Gala that considerably reduces the cost and time of this conversion by limiting its scope to the section of the aircraft between fuselage doors two and three—still a big chunk of real estate, but not as big an endeavor as recompleting the entire aircraft. “If you limit the VIP bit to the middle of the aircraft, you can have it more cost effectively and easily” and still have room to carry guests and support staff in airline first, business and economy classes, points out Airbus’s Velupillai. With Gala, the principal still gets a private lav, bedroom, office and conference area. Airbus doesn’t do the work itself, but will assist customers in finding a qualified completion center and provide engineering and project-management services. So if you need to span the globe in the style of a potentate while saving tens of millions of dollars, the A340 might be just the ticket. But you’d better hurry, folks. At these prices, they won’t last long. o

AND THEY COME IN ALL COLORS, TOO There’s nothing like seeing a flying machine up close to raise the excitement level. Most young people get to see aircraft only in movies or video. These lucky youngsters get to see, touch and smell the real article at ABACE.

Nagoya Airport serves as bizav gateway to Asia Representatives from Nagoya Airport in Japan’s Aichi Prefecture are here at ABACE (Booth P113) to discuss its convenient location within the country, as well as its suitability for business aviation travelers in the region. Nagoya is one of the few airports in Japan to be considered business aviation-specific, as the larger Chubu Centrair International Airport was built nearby to handle the majority of the area’s commercial traffic. Combined, the two Japanese airports handled more than 200 private aircraft last year, including 70 at Nagoya, according to Tominori Kato, Aichi Prefectural Government’s Deputy DirectorGeneral of the Department of Regional Development and Tourism, who expects that number will grow this year. Chubu has a handful of long-range based business aircraft, including a BBJ and a Gulfstream G650 and G450. The airports are little more than a two-hour flight from Shanghai, and less than three hours from Beijing. For business aviation, centrally located Nagoya is removed from the congestion of the Tokyo area, yet due to its central location it is easily connected to the capital and to hubs such as Osaka and Kyoto by high-speed train. Indeed, Nagoya will be the

first city linked to Tokyo by an under-construction, next-generation maglev train that will be nearly twice as fast as the current “bullet trains.” Dedicated Services

Nagoya, which is open from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m., offers a dedicated customs, immigration and quarantine facility, staffed on demand for international business arrivals, and ground handling is supplied by two FBOs: Nakanihon Air Service and Aero Asahi. The business aviation terminal is centrally located, less than 300 feet from the ramp, and aircraft can taxi directly to their own parking spaces under their own power. The airport, which has a 9,000-foot runway, is also suited as a fueling stop for long-range business jets from the U.S. East Coast heading for mainland

China. Larger aircraft carrying more passengers are currently referred to the international airport due to constraints on the customs facilities, but as demand increases, the airport will adapt to meet it. As a spur to that demand, Nagoya has been designated as a “Special Zone to Create Asia’s No. 1 Aerospace Industrial Cluster” by the Japanese government, with several heavy industry manufacturers engaged in the construction of aircraft components and subassemblies, including Mitsubishi which is soon anticipated to begin flight tests on its MRJ regional jetliner. The world headquarters for Toyota are also located nearby. With Tokyo designated as the site of the 2020 Olympics, the airports operators are already planning for an increase in business operators looking to avoid congestion elsewere. o

Hong Kong-based private aircraft management provider Bellawings Jet Limited has selected Hong Kong Jet to provide maintenance services for its growing aircraft fleet, sealing the deal during a signing on Tuesday in Shanghai at ABACE 2015. Hong Kong Jet, itself an IS-BAO level II aircraft operator with a fleet of 18 largecabin business jets and bizliners, holds Part 145 maintenance approval from China, Macau, Cayman Islands, Bermuda and Hong Kong, and provides maintenance support for Boeing, Airbus, Gulfstream and Bombardier jets. “We feel that our friends at Hong Kong Jet will give us what we want, which is a shared interest, a quality product and good maintenance AOG support, and even possibly commercial AOC support, which means charter backup if our aircraft do have a problem,” said Glen

Reghenzani, Bellawings’ director of flight operations. He added that further relations between the companies could possibly lead to sharing of flight crews. Formed in October 2014, and making its ABACE debut, Bellawings (Booth P232) presently operates a pair of B-registered aircraft–a Gulfstream G550 and Bombardier Global 5000. According to Reghenzani, it expects to add up to another 20 aircraft to its roster by next year. The company currently has four flight-crew per aircraft. The company has also established the Bellawings Club, an exclusive membership offering not limited to managed aircraft clients that provides personalized concierge services. In addition, it offers travel opportunities through its partnerships with luxury travel organizer Abercrombie and Kent and Hong Kong Airlines. –C.E.

Bellawings executive v-p Zhang Yijia, left, shakes hands on a maintenance deal with Hong Kong Jet director of business development Harold Wu, as Hong Kong Jet COO Denzil White looks on. The deal will support Bellawings’ growing jet fleet.

TOKYO’S AIRPORTS GETS FIRST BIZAV HANGARS With the Tokyo area beginning preparations to host the 2020 Olympics, its airports are already seeing improvements to handle the expected influx of private aircraft. Tokyo Haneda International Airport received its first private aviation hangar last month when Wings of Life began operations in a former 12,067-sq-m (129,850-sq-ft) Japan Airlines facility purchased by the company. The hangar features 5,007-sq-m (53,894-sq-ft) of aircraft storage, and is large enough to shelter aircraft up to a Boeing 747. In addition to storage, the hangar will provide space for private aircraft maintenance activities at the airport, and the company plans to add full FAA maintenance authorization in the future. At present, its JCAB Class 1 certified aircraft mechanic staff can provide assistance, including troubleshooting, parts procurement and mechanical support, along with a full suite of tools and equipment available for rental. The location features available office space, as well as mechanic and crew lounges for handling and maintenance companies to support their work within the hangar. At Narita, the airport corporation has leased a former 7,655-sq-m (82,400-sq-ft) JAL maintenance hangar to AGP Corp., which will provide private aircraft storage and accommodate third-party maintenance activities. Limited operations there began at the beginning of February, as the facility undergoes renovation. Like the Haneda hangar, it will be able to accommodate any class of business aircraft. –C.E.
