Developments such as these suggest that private aviation in China is swiftly moving from c oncept to reality. More innovations are on the way. For example, several investment groups in the region plan to build generalaviation towns to attract high-end tourists and encourage aircraft industry growth. In such locations—which will include amenities like boutique hotels and golf courses—business and social life will revolve around flying.

The Year in Business Aviation Activity in China has slowed a bit, but that’s good news for some. by James Wynbrandt cooling economy combined with new government policies to control corruption and extravagant spending may have dampened business aviation activity in China this past year, but these factors have also created opportunities for business jet travelers. Moreover, the slowdown has had little impact on regional growth in support services and infrastructure, or on optimism about future prospects. “It’s not so much a frenzy as it was before, but in the long term it’s going in the right direction,” says Carey Matthews, general manager of Shanghai Hawker Pacific Business Aviation Service Centre at Hongqiao International Airport. Matthews reports that Shanghai Hawker Pacific saw 6 percent growth in traffic at its facility last year, while his company expanded its services, becoming an authorized Cessna service center and receiving approval from the Civil Aviation Administration of China to perform structural repairs. The less froth in the market and the more services, the better, so as a business jet traveler, you could say it was an excellent year. But there’s no denying the impact the government’s anticorruption and austerity campaigns have had on charter activity. “We estimate 50 to 60 percent of that market disappeared overnight, by virtue of all the charter flights being government-business driven,” says Robert Molsbergen, president of Executive Jet Management, a subsidiary of U.S.-based NetJets. Molsbergen heads NetJets China Business Aviation, which began charter operations last October from

its base in Zhuhai with two Hawker 800XP midsize business jets. The company is a joint venture by NetJets and private Chinese investment firms Honey Capital and Fung Investments. NetJets China has no current plans to offer the fractionalownership programs its parent company sells, but it will provide the management services Executive Jet Management specializes in (under the EJM China brand). EJM, which manages more than 200 aircraft worldwide, recently brought aboard its first aircraft in the region, a Hong Kong-based Global 6000. Molsbergen points out that management fees are often offset by discounts on insurance, fuel, crew training and other costs that companies like his can offer owners because of their buying power.

eanwhile, the charter downturn has a silver lining for business jet travelers: reduced demand means lower pricing. “It’s a buyer’s market,” says Jeffrey Lowe, director of Hong Kong-based business consultancy Asian Sky Group. “Sometimes when we’re getting [charter] quotes for a client, we look at the numbers and say, ‘I don’t know how [the operator is] making money.’” Perhaps this heightened competition is what led to Hong Kong-based Metrojet’s recently announced collaboration with Qi, an haute Sichuan-style restaurant that provides menus for the aviation company’s charter customers. General Aviation that operates a maintenance, repair and overhaul facility in Zhuhai. Sales of new business jets in China have cooled in the past year. In 2012, however, Harbin Embraer Aircraft Industry announced plans to build Embraer Legacy 600/650 executive jets in the country. (Harbin is a joint venture partnering Brazilian manufacturer Embraer and Harbin Aircraft Industry (Group), a subsidiary of Aviation Industry Corporation of China.) Last June Harbin Embraer delivered a Legacy 650, the first large business jet assembled by a joint venture in China, to ICBC Financial Leasing. This year the company is set to deliver a Legacy 500 midsize jet to its launch customer in China, Jackie Chan. urrently, several investment groups and agencies are planning to create general-aviation towns, where business and social life will revolve around flying. The proposed Ordos World Aviation Expo Industrial Zone and its World Aviation City in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, announced last fall, aims to spark both an indigenous aircraft industry and high-end tourism. A partnership of the Ordos Airport Industrial Zone (OAIZ) and China Aviation Investment Group, the planned $8 billion industrial zone will feature an eight-square-kilometer airpark along with a shopping mall, amusement park, golf course and boutique hotel. “The region is ideally suited for the growth of key industries and foreign investment,” says Wang Jian, OAIZ party committee secretary. A terminal, intended to serve as the airpark’s FBO (aviation ground-support facility), has already been

Several investment groups are planning general-aviation towns where business and social life will revolve around flying. built at Ordos Ejin Horo Airport, and a corporate aircraft exhibition is planned for this September. The grand opening of World Aviation City is slated for Aug. 1, 2016. China’s Superior Aviation Group announced plans last summer for Superior Aviation Town and Executive Airport, to rise some 10 miles east of Beijing, an airport-centric community focused on general and business aviation. “Superior Aviation Town is as much about encouraging a flying lifestyle as it is about flying airplanes,” says Superior Group CEO Timothy Archer. The two-square-mile, $3.2 billion development, which will take an estimated two and a half years to complete, will include a manufacturing center, an exhibition center, residential complexes and what the company promises will be China’s first aero club. The project is being directed by the Superior Freesky Investment Management Company with the support of the Shunyi district’s government. “A lot of provinces within China are trying to create aviation or industrial parks,” says Archer, “but no one is doing it to the scale we are.” Before you start house hunting at this development or any of the other planned aviation communities, be aware that they may fail to take root. “They all want to create the whole industry value chain,” says Kevin Wu, chairman of the Asian Business Aviation Association (AsBAA). “Can you imagine 40 to 50 general-aviation towns in China, where the U.S. has only several? In my opinion, this results in waste.” hile general-aviation town developments seek to bootstrap a homegrown aviation industry and culture, an indigenous capability, and sensibility, is already flowering in China. Last year the former Taeco Cabin Completion Center in Hong Kong changed its name to Haeco Private Jet Solutions, in part to underscore its suite of services covering the entire lifecycle of an executive aircraft. The only company in Asia that has both an Airbus- and Boeing-approved completion facility, it has its sights on the local market. “Ultimately, the objective

is to serve ultra-high-net-worth individuals in China,” says Henry Chan, Haeco’s vice president, commercial. Haeco also aims to bring traditional homegrown culture to its completions. Last December the company introduced its “Xiao Yao” design concept for executive-configured airliners. The design brings feng shui principles used in traditional Chinese architecture to the cabin, expressed in curving interior lines, relative positioning of living and sleeping areas, and the balance of the “five elements” of fire, earth, metal, water and wood. “We’ve seen good, respectable designs from Europe or the States, but these are modern Western designs,” Chan says. “We have not seen designs that are of genuine heritage and based on the respected philosophy of ancient Chinese philosophers.” The company’s Haeco Xiamen facility has six massive hangar bays, each capable of accommodating two wide-body and one narrow-body aircraft simultaneously, and the facilities are 80 percent occupied by aircraft undergoing maintenance and refurbishment as well as green completions. Wu of the AsBAA sees China’s model of requiring foreign companies to have local partners as a good path forward. “The outsider can bring experience, best practices, and newer business models, and the indigenous partners can put in financing, understanding [of local markets] and connections.” Last year China’s Sparkle Roll Technik and completion and refurbishment specialist Flying Colours of Canada, formed a joint venture for business jet cabin modifications and maintenance. In their first project, eight China B-registered Bombardier CRJ-200s are being converted from commuter to executive interiors at Flying Colours’ facility, where Sparkle Roll Technik technicians are learning modification techniques. The final stages of later conversions will be performed at a hangar facility that will be established at Linyi City in Shangdong Province.

In November, UAS International Trip Support opened its Asia Pacific headquarters in Hong Kong and a regional office in Beijing. The Hong Kong location will offer 24/7 service in English, Mandarin and Cantonese. “If a charter or corporate jet needs a landing permit in Wellington for a flight from Bangkok, but they need it relayed in Mandarin, we’ve got them covered,” says Roman Stampouis, the company’s Asia Pacific regional director. Whatever its current stance toward business aviation, Wu says, China’s Central Government has attached “great importance” to growth of the industry. He points to several measures adopted over the past year, such as simplifying the Air Operators Certificate application process, expanding a subsidy program for segments of the general aviation industry, and supporting the movement of authority for approval of flight plans and other general aviation activities from regional to local authorities. Removing airspace restrictions remains a challenge. Last November the Central Government hosted a national meeting with civilian and military authorities to develop an implementation plan for loosening strictures. The plan looks good “on paper,” Wu says, but “we need to watch, and to push” to ensure follow through. The AsBAA itself is muscling up to help that effort; the organization added 15 members in the last year, bringing its total to more than 100 companies. Going forward, realizing China’s business aviation potential and building out its infrastructure will require more than government encouragement, business community buy-in, and money. It will take time. Even if China builds “10 or 15 general aviation airports each year, it still won’t meet demand,” says Wu. “That’s going to be a long BJT process, longer than five or 10 years.”

New-jet programs come in two flavors: clean-sheet-of-paper designs and updates of existing models. This article deals strictly with the former. The category is well populated, but mostly with midsize and super-midsize jets—a reflection of continuing softness in the entry-level sector, but also of growing strength in the large-jet and bizliner field. Bombardier, Cessna and Embraer all have models under development in what can be called the greater middle market, the most attractive category for fractional programs and other fleet customers. The largejet business is also seeing renewed action: projects are underway at Bombardier, Dassault and Gulfstream. The new midsize aircraft all evidence a focus on passenger comfort, with improved seating, larger windows and flat-floor cabins. In addition, all c ategories are moving toward touchscreen avionics in the cockpit and more fuel-efficient engines, which translate into better range and time-to-climb numbers. Winglet design is being revised with more swooping shapes. Manufacturers also are changing the way they sell aircraft, with greater focus on simplified maintenance and life-cycle costs and hourly maintenance programs that are wrapped into the purchase price. This should increase reliability across the board and inch dispatch rates up to near 100 percent. Development and certification schedules on select programs continue to fall behind, the victims of financial challenges at some companies; technical d ifficulties integrating new technologies into airframe, avionics and flight controls; and certification slowdowns attributable to budgetary and other constraints at both the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and the European Aviation Safety Agency. All that said, nearly all aircraft now under development have one thing in common: a near-perfect balance of versatility, performance, comfort and costs. The big differentiator will be customer service and support.

Cirrus Vision SF50: Cirrus anticipates late 2015 certification for its long-delayed SF50 single-engine jet. It flew the first conforming prototype in March of 2014 and added two more to the flight-test program last November and December. The conforming test aircraft differ just a little from the non-conformal, proof-of-concept prototype the company has flown since 2008: they feature a slightly longer nose and higher fuselage loft than the model currently flying. The five-plus-two seating layout is retained but Cirrus has added options such as weather radar, a “relief station” and upgraded leathers. The company already is beginning to gear up for production by adding factory robotics and a fuselage lay-up mold for the all-composite aircraft. The first production Vision is planned to take flight in the second half of this year. Cirrus has received deposits for more than 500 of the $1.96 million jets, which feature the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System for emergency recovery of the entire aircraft. Flaris LAR 01: Poland-based aviation newcomer Flaris unveiled its five-seat, single-engine light jet at the Paris Air Show in 2013. The eye-catching model features rear-hinged main cabin doors reminiscent of 1960s Lincoln Continental cars, detachable wings and stabilizers, a fuselage fuel tank, electric deicing and an in-the-nose wholeaircraft ballistic parachute for emergency recovery.
LIGHT TWIN ENGINE HondaJet: Honda Aircraft expects certification of its unique light twin in the first quarter of this year. Honda claims the jet has 15 to 20 percent greater fuel efficiency and higher speed than competing models. The five- to six-passenger model will be certified for single-pilot operation. The HondaJet mates a carbon-fiber composite fuselage to metal wings, and the positioning of the engines on over-the-wing pylons means larger cabin volume and generous passenger legroom as well as an enclosed and externally serviced lavatory. Top cruise speed is 778 km (420 knots) and range with four occupants is 2,185 km (1,180 nautical miles).

Cessna Citation Latitude: Announced in 2011, the light midsize Citation Latitude first flew last February and is slated to enter service in the second quarter of this year. The Latitude is the first Citation with a flat floor (no dropped aisle), and the cabin is 8.38 m (27.5 feet) long, 1.83 m (6 feet) tall and about 1.98 m (6.5 feet) wide. The standard seating arrangement accommodates passengers with a forward, dual-seat, side-facing divan, a club-four grouping of single seats with extra legroom and two more single seats aft of that. The Latitude features Garmin G5000 avionics and Cessna’s wireless fiber-optic Clairity cabin-management system. The G5000 has three 14-inch LCD primary and multifunction displays and four touchscreen control panels. It offers all the latest safety equipment, including synthetic vision, electronic charts and Garmin’s Safe Taxi airport charts. The Clairity system allows completely wireless control of cabin functions, and it is compatible with personal devices. During the flight-test program, Cessna was able to increase the Latitude’s range, from 4,630 to 5,000 km (2,500 to 2,700 nautical miles), and lower landing distance from 1,228 to 1,118 m (4,030 to 3,668 feet). Embraer’s Legacy 450: The Legacy 450 medium light twinjet made its first flight last December; certification is expected late next year. The shorter sibling of the Legacy 500 midsize, the 450 shares many of its systems and characteristics, including engines, avionics, fuselage diameter and fly-by-wire flight controls. The aircraft pressurization system keeps cabin altitude at 1,829 m (6,000 feet) at the 450’s maximum cruising altitude of 13,716 m (45,000 feet). The 19.2-cubic-meter (678-cubic-foot) cabin offers seating for seven to nine passengers. Cabin management and in-flight entertainment are courtesy of Honeywell’s HD Ovation Select system, which allows for control of entertainment, communications, lights, temperature, window shades and more via drink-rail-mounted units, wireless handheld devices or a galley touchscreen. The system can interface with high-speed satellite communications and a variety of consumer electronics. The cockpit offers Rockwell Collins Pro Line Fusion avionics. The four large active-matrix LCDs in the panel connect the pilots with synthetic and enhanced vision including an optional head-up display; electronic charts, maps, graphical weather depiction from an intuitive MultiScan weather radar system that “sees” up to 515 km (320 statute miles) out; and an airport surface-management system that minimizes the chances of ground mishaps.

Pilatus PC-24: Pilatus’s PC-24 combines light-jet operating economics with super-midsize-jet capabilities and comfort and is aimed at more conventional offerings from Cessna and Embraer. Like the company’s iconic PC-12 single-engine turboprop, the PC-24 retains an aft cargo door and the capability to operate from short, unpaved and unimproved fields. The new Williams engines have unique features, including automatic thrust reverse, passive thrust vectoring nozzles, quiet power mode in place of an auxiliary power unit to provide ground power, integral pre-cooler to condition bleed air and reduce drag losses and an anti-ice and noise-suppressing engine inlet. Up front, the customized avionics suite dubbed Pace—Pilatus Advanced Cockpit Environment—is based on the Honeywell Primus Apex and Epic systems and features all the latest advances. The voluminous passenger cabin provides more overall space than either the Cessna Citation XLS+ or the Embraer Phenom 300 and has a flat floor, which means less headroom in the aisle. The aircraft will come with seven layout alternatives that include executive, commuter, combi and quick-change configurations as well as options for an externally serviced lavatory, either forward or aft, and galleys. Pilatus expects certification of the PC-24 in 2017.

Bombardier Challenger 650: Bombardier unveiled the Challenger 650 last October. The Montreal-headquartered airframer is refreshing its classic, 10-passenger 600-series Challenger with a redesigned cockpit and cabin and improved GE CF34-3B MTO turbofans that will provide more takeoff thrust to facilitate use of shorter runways, greater payloads and more range from challenging airports during high/hot operations. Planned maximum range of the new model is 7,408 km (4,000 nautical miles) with six passengers. Deliveries of the $33.35 million Challenger 650 are targeted for this year’s second quarter. Fractional-ownership provider NetJets is the launch customer with a firm order for 25 (and options on 50 more) to be completed to the Signature Series standard specified by NetJets. Cessna Citation Longitude: The biggest Citation yet is a stretched and longer-legged variant of the Citation Latitude. Scheduled to enter service in 2017, it shares the Latitude’s avionics, cabin-management system, seats, windows and fuselage cross-section but is 2.7 m (9 feet) longer and relies on Snecma’s new Silvercrest engines for power. control” avionics architecture that the company is using on the Latitude. The cabin-management system will build on Cessna’s Clairity equipment. The aircraft seats eight passengers in a cabin featuring a large forward galley and an aft lavatory with vacuum-flushing toilet. The forward cabin may include a crew lavatory as well as a third crew/flight-attendant seat. Like the Latitude’s interior cross-section, the Longitude’s is 183 cm (72 inches) tall and 196 cm (77 inches) wide. The forward club-four configuration is capacious and the single executive seats are full-berthing. There is room for another club-four in the aft cabin or a three-place divan, certified for takeoff and landing, opposite an entertainment center with a large flatscreen monitor. The Longitude has limited, computerized fly-by-wire capabilities for controlling the rudder, spoilers and brakes (“brake-by-wire”). Its 30-degree swept wing incorporates leading-edge slats, winglets, centrifugal ailerons and five speed-brake/spoiler panels per side. All this combines to give the aircraft good short-field capabilities under most load conditions.
Dassault Falcon 5X: Dassault launched its long-anticipated large twinjet in 2013 and expects it to enter service in 2017. The 5X features an expanded fuselage diameter of nearly 2.7 m (8.9 feet)—the widest ever for a Falcon—plus flyby-wire controls, new Snecma Silvercrest engines and advanced flight-control surfaces on the wings. It has a range of 9,630 km (5,200 nautical miles) with eight passengers. Dassault claims that it is 50 percent more fuel efficient than current, comparable aircraft on a 2,778 km (1,500-nautical-mile) mission.

Dassault Falcon 8X: Dassault Aviation unveiled its Falcon 8X trijet last May, a significant step up from the popular 7X. A longer cabin offers more layout possibilities, including the option to install a large aft lavatory with a shower and a crew rest area in the front section and still have a comfortable three-lounge cabin in between. The 8X also offers greater range—11,945 km (6,450 nautical miles). From Los Angeles, Beijing is within reach. From New York, the 8X can travel nonstop to Dubai. The first flight is planned for early this year, with deliveries set to begin in the second half of 2016. The model will reportedly sell for about 10 percent more than the 7X, which would put the price in the neighborhood of $58 million. Direct operating costs are estimated at $4,075 per hour. Gulfstream G500/G600: Gulfstream Aerospace unveiled its G500 and G600 last October. The jets are expected to enter service in 2018 and 2019, respectively. Both models have a wider cabin cross-section than the G450 and G550, but not quite as wide as that of the G650. The new jets—nestled between the G450, G550 and G650—will have more composite content than existing Gulfstreams. At a normal cruise speed of Mach 0.90, the G500 and G600 will fly 7,038 and 8,890 km (3,800 and 4,800 nautical miles), respectively; at Mach 0.85, they will have a range of 9,260 and 11,482 km (5,000 and 6,200 nautical miles), respectively. Each of the new large-cabin jets will be powered by a pair of Pratt & Whitney Canada PW800 turbofans—the 6,869-kg- (15,144-pound)thrust PW814GA for the G500 and the 7,112-kg- (15,680-pound)-thrust PW815GA for the G600. The aircraft feature fly-by-wire flight control and will be the first Gulfstreams equipped with active sidestick controls. The G500/G600 flight deck, branded as Gulfstream Symmetry, is based on Honeywell’s Primus Epic suite. The first flight-test aircraft are under construction, and the G500 is slated to fly this year; certification is set for 2017 and service entry for 2018. The G600 will fly 12 to 18 months after the G500 and enter service in 2019. Pricing for the first 50 serial numbers has been set at $43.5 million BJT for the G500 and $54.5 million for the G600.

cabin-management and entertainment system, a better environmental-control system, uprated Pratt & Whitney Canada engines, a redesigned cockpit and an upgraded cabin with seats for eight to nine passengers. While it may look almost identical to a legacy Sovereign, the new model offers wingspan that is 2.74 meters (9 ft) longer, holds more fuel and boosts takeoff weight from 13,743 to 13,959 kg (30,300 to 30,775 pounds).

The airplane incorporates these improvements while retaining its ability to use runways as short as 1,076 m (3,530 feet), cruise at 852 km (460 knots) per hour and post slightly faster climb times. Bundled together, the changes on the Sovereign+ also yield an airplane
with a range of 5,556 km (3,000 nm), 278 (150) more than its predecessor, making it officially transcontinental in the U.S. It executes the trip with dramatically improved functionality and comfort, while— so far, at least—holding the line on price: $18.1 million. This is the type of incrementalism Cessna does better than anyone else in the business. Certified in 2004, the original Sovereign quickly built market appeal, selling 350 copies through the end of last year, more than half for export. The basic design is simple: mechanical linkages to the control surfaces, no exotic flyby-wire here. Stylistically, from the cruciform tail to the trenched center aisle in the passenger cabin, the Sovereign harks back to the first transcontinental business jets of the 1960s, such as the Rockwell Sabreliner 65. You can’t really call this airplane super-midsize as it has nowhere near the cabin volume, wide floors or headroom of a true super-midsize such as a Gulfstream G280 or a Bombardier Challenger 350, but then it costs millions less. As previously suggested, the Sovereign borrows from several Citations. It has the same 168-cm (66-inch) tube width at

The trenched dropfloor center aisle provides 173 cm (68 inches) of headroom. The passenger cabin is just over 7.62 m (25 feet) long. Eight individual swivel, slide and reclining passenger seats are arranged into two facing “club 4” layouts. A single side-facing seat opposite the aircraft entry door can be added, bringing passenger capacity to nine, if you select the shorter 79-cm- (31-inch)-wide “refreshment center.” It holds an ice drawer, storage, trash and two beverage containers. The nine-seat layout is the most popular, as most operators use their Sovereigns in roles akin to corporate shuttles: they skip the frills, load up the seats and go.

Stowage space remains respectable for an aircraft in this category. A heated, externally accessed 2.8 cubic-meter (100-cubic-foot) baggage hold in the tail section can swallow 453.6 kg (1,000 pounds); inside the lavatory is a .77-cubicmeter (27-cubic-foot hanging closet rated for 142 kg (312 pounds); and another smaller closet, in the front opposite the galley, can take 56 kg (123 pounds). The sole lavatory is aft of the main cabin and separated by a pair of sliding doors.

one of this changes on the Sovereign+, but plenty else does. The cabin is completely restyled with more flowing cabinetry and new LED lighting to brighten the space. Other touches include a more robust side-table design and the elimination of traditional cup holders in favor of multifunctional storage for keys, cell phones and beverages. But it is the new air conditioning, seats and cabin electronics that passengers will appreciate most. Cessna says the air conditioning provides 37 percent better cooling. Passenger seating has long been the bane of midsize Cessnas: the comfort of a church pew locked into the styling of a 1980s minivan. Working with Ipeco, the European

It is the new air conditioning, seats and cabin electronics that passengers will most appreciate. manufacturer long lauded for its cockpit seating, Cessna designed a common seat platform, used now in the Sovereign+ and new Citation X and soon in the under-development Latitude and Longitude. It features eight degrees more pitch, allowing passengers to lean back farther—and more comfortably. The armrests retract into the seatback, widening the aisle and providing more seated thigh room for larger passengers. You get the sensation that you are sitting in the seat, as opposed to on it. It’s not the same level of comfort you get in a high-end Mercedes, in which the seat-cushion side bolsters automatically inflate and deflate as you round corners, but it’s light years away from a minivan. You can enhance comfort more by ordering the adjustable mechanical lumbar. Passenger electronics have also made a quantum leap in this airplane, thanks to the new Clairity cabin-management system. system, avionics and communications through a fiber-optic backbone. Six 110V outlets are located throughout the cockpit, cabin and lav with jacks at each club-four seat grouping, and USB charging ports are standard at each seat. As an option, the 110V outlets can be added at each seat. Interactive touchscreen controllers at every seat, about the size of smartphones, operate cabin lights, window shades, temperature, digital audio and video and an interactive moving map. The controllers also have built-in Web browsers (Internet service required). Options include
RGB mood lighting, Wi-Fi, highspeed Internet and satellite radio. Five basic fabric and color combinations are available for the Sovereign+. Customers can also choose their own fabrics and colors. The restyled cockpit is built around the new Garmin G5000 touchscreen avionics suite, which features three 14-inch flat-panel displays, an integrated autopilot and autothrottles. The G5000 offers the latest communications, safety and navigation technology, including synthetic vision, weather radar, GPS with wide-area-augmentation system for precision approaches, traffic-collision-avoidance system (Tcas II), terrain-awareness and warning system (Taws), ADS-B out, radio altimeter and cockpit voice recorder. Automatic functions built into the G5000 speed engine start and preflight checks and add additional layers of idiot-proofing. While more refined inside for passengers and pilots, the Sovereign+ retains a few of the handling drawbacks of its progenitor, mainly the truck-like handling in the roll axis. But that’s a small price to pay for a thoroughly modernized aircraft that offers almost the ideal combination of economy, range, utility, speed and payload. Even with all this, the Sovereign+ still may not be the perfect airplane. But BJT it’s really close.

Beechcraft Corporation traces its roots back to 1932 with the Model 17 “Staggerwing,” which saw military service in China. In 1937, Walter Beech introduced the Model 18, arguably the first cabinclass, twin-engine business airplane. That effort morphed in 1964 into the twin-turboprop King Air, which has since undergone multiple upgrades and remains in production. Raytheon bought Beech in 1980, adding the Hawker business jet brand, and the company became Hawker Beechcraft. It emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2013 as the Beechcraft Corporation, which no longer produces business jets and instead focuses exclusively on its turboprop line. In 2014, Textron acquired Beechcraft, merging it with Cessna to create Textron Aviation, which is retaining the Beechcraft and Cessna brands.

The sleek, pusher-turboprop Piaggio Avanti was developed in response to the energy crisis of the 1970s. Piaggio delivered the first Avanti in 1990. In 2005, the company updated the aircraft with the Rockwell Collins Pro Line 21 avionics system, gave it slightly more powerful Pratt & Whitney Canada engines and branded it the Avanti II. Last May, Piaggio announced an upgraded version of the original P.180 Avanti, called the Avanti EVO, which received European certification late last year. The EVO’s aerodynamic improvements boost cruise speed to 403 knots, maximum cruise range to 1,770 nautical miles and maximum altitude to 41,000 feet. Climb rate is 10 percent higher and takeoff and landing distances are lower.
Honda Aircraft has begun production of the HA-420 HondaJet and expects to receive certification from the U.S. FAA early this year. The light jet carries up to six passengers and features over-thewing engine mounting, which frees up space in the composite fuselage and allows for a fully enclosed, externally serviced lavatory, unique in this size aircraft. Top cruise speed is 420 knots and range with four occupants is 1,180 nautical miles.

Aircraft in production: N/A, production expected to resume production late 2015 SyberJet Aircraft broke ground on a completion and delivery center last May at Cedar City (Utah) Regional Airport, where its SJ30 light jets will be finished and turned over to customers. SyberJet owner MSC Aerospace also owns the adjacent Metalcraft Technologies, a long-time manufacturer of metal aircraft and turbine engine components, including about 70 percent of the SJ30’s airframe structure. SyberJet was formed by MSC in 2011 and purchased the SJ30 assets from bankrupt Emivest Aerospace. The company plans to deliver the SJ30i—the newest version, which is equipped with a Honeywell Primus Epic-based SyberVision cockpit and Jason Castriota Design interior—late this year. It will be followed in 2017 by the SJ30x, which will feature more powerful and efficient Williams FJ44-3A engines and offer about 200 nautical miles of added range.

nce again, our annual Readers’ Choice Survey has produced a record response. We heard from more than 1,200 of you this year, a 13 percent increase from 2013. Our thanks to everyone who took the time to participate.
