AlMasria Universal Airlines opts for Rusada’s ENVISION

To achieve greater efficiency and cooperation during their planned growth, AlMasria will adopt Rusada’s ENVISION software to manage an array of activities through one solution. Modules to be implemented include Fleet Management for airworthiness, Operations Control for flight ops, Base & Line Maintenance, and Inventory Management. Rusada’s in-house implementation teams will deploy each module in a staged approach to ensure a seamless transition for AlMasria.
In late August 2022, Egypt’s second largest carrier, AlMasria Universal Airlines, announced that it has selected Rusada’s ENVISION software to unify its airworthiness, maintenance, and flight operations.
From its base in Cairo, AlMasria serves destinations across North Africa, Europe, and the Middle East with a growing fleet of Airbus A320s and Boeing 737s.

The Akasa Air team relies on Swiss-AS’ cloud hosting service. The AMOS cloud hosting package, combined with AOS (management of application and database server), provides the customer with a fully cloud-hosted AMOS environment and ideal operating conditions to benefit from the full potential of AMOS. This option relieves Akasa Air of the need to operate a technical infrastructure on premise and provides an attractive and cost-effective alternative — being the perfect setup for a start-up airline.
Due to these two reasons, the airline was looking for a partner who could develop a strategy tailored to Akasa Air, with the objective to initially support a timely go-live and, in a second phase, to increase the usage of the software functionalities and the automation of the processes.
The implementation was finalised in late August 2022 after just three months of project work with a successful go-live — on time with the operational start of their first B737 MAX. The timely operational start of AMOS was possible due to: as a start-up company with brand-new aircraft, only minor data transfer is required, a process that is often the deciding factor of the project duration; and the broad AMOS experience of the project team.

With the seamless integration of the Swiss-AS eTLB with AMOS and AMOSmobile/EXEC, customers benefit from a product suite that becomes the one source of truth for cockpit, cabin and maintenance staff. Each airline will profit from streamlined end-to-end processes across AMOSdesktop, AMOSmobile and the eTLB, providing increased data access and consistency across departments… to better achieve the usual benefits expected from an eTLB.
Swiss-AS eTLB main functions
Admin: being able to manage users and roles, workflows and configuration directly in AMOS, roll-out updates and configuration through their Mobile Device Management.
Authorities: in an analogy to the paper TechLog, the authorities need to consult and access the continuous airworthiness of the aircraft associated with the specific eTLB. They can consult every page but are not able to edit any detail.
Cabin: being able to report a cabin defect in a simple way; if needed, a highlighted picture can be added in order to enhance the Flight Crew — Cabin Crew communication.
Pilot in command: reporting defects in an intuitive way, selecting them from a pre-existing list and being able to add any additional relevant information for the maintenance staff, it goes beyond a defect report.

A joint development effort including the AMOS airline customer community Swiss-AS collaborates closely with customers to specify the product scope, as performed previously for the development of various AMOS features. This tradition is extended and even enhanced for the Swiss-AS eTLB project, which involves requirement gathering from cockpit crew, cabin crew and maintenance staff.Over the past months, Swiss-AS had the privilege to onboard several AMOS customers to the eTLB development partners group, such as EL AL ISRAEL AIRLINES, Luxair and Cebu Air. Since the project kick-off in September 2021, both Swiss-AS and customer project team members attended numerous workshops to define key features to be used by pilots, cabin crew and maintenance users. We consider this customer-centric scope definition and validation process to be a highly constructive and successful model to facilitate the delivery of a mature and functionally advanced product. Thanks to this strategic partnership with AMOS airline customers of several types and sizes, Swiss-AS will deliver its eTLB solution in Q4 2023.
At the early stages of its development project, Swiss-AS decided for a Type-A EFB application running on a portable EFB. This strategic choice simplifies the aviation authorities’ approval process for customers, while avoiding, once implemented, the continuous certification process of each new release of the application. Moreover, Swiss-AS is currently working closely with EASA to obtain an NTO letter to even more ease the adoption of the Swiss-AS eTLB by its customers and their authorities.

Lufthansa German Airlines and Lufthansa Cargo live with AMOS
In late July 2022, Swiss AviationSoftware Ltd. was proud to announce the successful cut-over to AMOS M&E system at Lufthansa German Airlines and Lufthansa Cargo. The ‘big-bang’ go-live took place on May 14th and 15th and marked the ultimate finalization of an implementation unique in Swiss-AS history in terms of size and complexity: 3,500 users, 150 new processes, a multitude of individual legacy IT systems being replaced and close to 300 aircraft ranging over seven aircraft-types including the A320s with up to 30 years of history. Both airlines have fully adopted AMOS for their whole active fleets in a multi-CAMO setup — two completely separated CAMOs (LHA + LCAG) plus one SCAMT service provider working in one AMOS environment — all approved by the German aviation authority.Theglobal pandemic had a significant impact on the AMOS implementation as all projects at Lufthansa had been put on hold in 2020. Fortunately, the airline’s Management then decided to continue the AMOS rollout as one of few strategic projects: ‘AMOS Restart’ was born and came with an adjusted scope and limited manpower. To eventually achieve go-live with AMOS, it was required to create a complete new Technical Fleet Management organization inside the Lufthansa Group, adjust processes to existing group standards that follow the AMOS built-in industry best practices processes, and convince the users that the rich functional scope and configurability of AMOS matches the customized legacy system features.
The AMOS implementation was flanked by the group-wide Technical Fleet Management (TFM) initiative that focusses on the standardization and harmonization of the technical business processes among the Lufthansa Group members in order to boost the performance of the individual Tech Ops departments and to allow an easy exchange of aircraft and other assets within the group.

With their extensive AMOS knowledge, colleagues from the sister airlines supported the implementation as key users in areas such as training, user acceptance testing, process definition and data transfer, while further cementing the collaboration within the Lufthansa Group.
From the beginning the project was designed around the hypothesis of a big-bang go-live with approx. 300 aircraft across all stations. This approach will eventually allow to exploit expected benefits faster and avoid the complexity of running multiple systems in parallel for an extended time.
The AMOS centric IT eco system includes advanced interfaces to around 15 major external software sources, such as Flight Operations Systems, Digital Archiving Solution, Crew Briefing Systems, Warehouse Management and Transport/ Logistics Management Systems etc. One of the most advanced integrations connects AMOS with the customer’s main pool provider Lufthansa Technik, through an advanced bi-directional integration to support an automated supply chain process.
A big-bang implementation with unparalleled dimensions
Leveraging existing AMOS experience in the Lufthansa Group AMOS has been used for more than 20 years within the Lufthansa Group; therefore, Lufthansa German Airlines and Lufthansa Cargo were in the lucky position to profit from the extensive experience of
outsourced the CAMO and Line Maintenance activities to Lufthansa Technik. In parallel with the AMOS implementation, these activities have been insourced along with the integration of approx. 2,500 staff and many of the legacy IT systems, used to manage these activities.
From the IT perspective, Swiss-AS in partnership with Reist Telecom (Zurich) hosts the airline’s AMOS servers and offers in this context its proven AMOS Operation Service (AOS) package. Swiss-AS is already performing hosting, AMOS application server and database administration for other Lufthansa Group members, which convinced Lufthansa German Airlines and Lufthansa Cargo to also entrust these crucial tasks to Swiss-AS.
In total 60 million records had to be transferred into AMOS. This major task of legacy data cleansing, mapping, extraction, transfer and validation had been mastered by a mixed project team of Lufthansa Group and Swiss-AS.
For the cut-over, a duration of 48 hours had been scheduled. During that time Swiss-AS had allocated around 40 employees onsite at Frankfurt, Munich and Hamburg to support the users during the switch-over and the post-go-live stabilisation period. In addition, the Swiss-AS headquarters was on standby for any challenges that might occur during such event.

In early September 2022 Aviation InterTec Services published a paper on maintenance assembly and component position control using their RAAS solution.
In this scenario, a configuration template would be created for the FCU PN to describe the fact that for it to track correctly it must have the MPD-based maintenance limitation implemented. The engine PN would also have a configuration template, which would describe the need for each engine to have one FCU installed. The aircraft would also have a configuration template, identifying that each aircraft must have two engines installed, and those engines should have position labels of, perhaps, LH and RH.
In the simple template scenario described above RAAS has enough information to impose rules and behaviours on users of the system, at various levels and in multiple departments. At a very high level, the templates allow a program manager or QA auditor to perform aircraft and assembly configuration verification analysis with a click of a button, with the ability to have the system keep a log of anomalies. What are assembly templates in aircraft maintenance?
RAAS assembly template control utilities allow users to define the structure of any assembly, be it a minor virtual assembly such as a battery with one or many associated limitations, or a complex major assembly such as an engine or landing gear. Assembly templates are set at the assembly type, and assemblies are nested, which by extension means assembly template management in RAAS is based on inheritance.
A routine data quality check for Quality Assurance and Technical Records personnel includes confirmation that aircraft and their respective major and minor subassemblies are configured to ensure all necessary components, inspections, ADs and SBs are tracking correctly data-wise. Such confirmation of data quality is necessary given the nature of aviation maintenance tracking and related regulatory oversight, so is it surprising that many maintenance management solutions do not offer comprehensive assembly template control utilities.
RH engines and each engine has a single FCU installed. Let’s imagine each FCU has a position label of ‘Only’. In this situation and due to inheritance, RAAS will set the position label of the FCUs based on their parent assembly locations, such that the FCU attached to the LH engine will be called ‘LH-Only’ and the FCU attached to the RH engine will be called ‘RH-Only’. Wouldn’t it be great if a software solution allowed a person to create a library of forecast templates, schedule those templates for repetitive periodic execution, and deliver the automatically executed forecast results to a user or group of users? In addition to that, how about having the software solution auto-generate work orders in cases where there is something coming due within the forecast period?Obviously, RAAS does all of these things. Scheduled automatic forecast execution is a very popular feature used by a wide array of users on the basis that RAAS forecasting features allow forecasting against aircraft, aircraft types, major assemblies, ground equipment, inventory shelf lives and even tool cribs. First and foremost is always Safety and Wellness which are core to what Etihad does and the number one priority. We live and breathe safety and every decision must be viewed in that light. During the pandemic, Etihad deployed a wellness program to provide passengers with the confidence that if they were travelling with Etihad, they could feel comfortable to be on board and that everything would be done to eliminate any sense of threat or stress coming fromCOVID-19: it was a really successful initiative. There is also a strong focus on our people who

As the national carrier for the UAE, Etihad Airways was launched in 2003 and so might now be considered a mature business. But, in many ways, Etihad Airways today is quite different from what the airline was even ten years ago. We are now in the process of implementing a five-year transformation plan and have adopted a revised strategy positioning the airline as a mid-sized carrier with a focus on being commercially sustainable and on delivering high levels of customer satisfaction.Thereare more than 8,000 employees which will grow as the business grows. Those people are drawn from 127 nationalities, a real cultural mix and an impressive example of people from different cultures working together. Etihad Airways currently flies to 71 destinations across 45 countries. There are currently 71 aircraft in the fleet: 15 Airbus A320 and A321; 5 Airbus A350 with a brand-new cabin; there are also 12 Boeing 777, five of which are freighters; and 39 Boeing 787, a very efficient aircraft that was very useful during the pandemic to keep operating with reduced costs. Across the fleet, the average age of aircraft is 5.8 years, quite young and it’s nice to have aircraft that are really efficient and which allow the airline to reduce its carbon footprint.

COVID-19 epidemic was both an unprecedented and unpredictable crisis which drove the airline sector to adapt to some incredibly fast changes. In this article, we’ll try to share with readers how Etihad managed to get through that time and used a digital transformation to turn the crisis into an opportunity. But we’ll first tell you a little about Etihad Airways.

We knew where we were and where we wanted to be in five years, and had a clear roadmap. We initially identified that Etihad is using a dual maintenance information system which proved to be really inefficient. There were inflexible contracts with a lack of visibility or understanding on costs; there was definitely room for improvement. In the five-year plan, we wanted to maximize the use of AMOS, our MRO system from Swiss Aviation Software, to exploit its full capabilities — we knew that we hadn’t made full use of the system. There was also an objective to become fully paperless and to link Etihad’s safety performance to the business’s performance and to be able to visualize this type of information. It was not always possible to make the best-informed decision based on the data generated from our systems. Another objective was to use automation for processes where that could not only be successfully achieved but could also be achieved quickly — a worthwhile investment.

Those objectives have been refined to three pillars. First to enhance airworthiness control, then to improve financial performance and governance and, finally, to enhance operational efficiency. These three pillars will be used to achieve Etihad’s target or vision which is to be an organization of choice, setting global standards. This statement is the same as that which guides the executive team.

Of course, service is key; Etihad wishes to provide the best service to customers. Customer satisfaction, as already mentioned, is at the heart of our work. Finally, technology; like everybody, Etihad seeks to innovate but we want the technology to enable the outcome, it should not itself be the outcome, should not be the final result. What we do with the technology is the important thing.
There was a good vision with a fantastic plan, and Etihad had already started some initiatives but then COVID-19 came. Although some great starts had been made, everything had to then be re-imagined. Etihad Airways was already using AMOS and we knew that we wanted to improve our performance with the system (see above) whether that was going over to a full AMOS solution or adding to the information system. So, for this data migration exercise we transferred 60 million parameters from the old MRO system to AMOS in just one day. We had also already tested some systems linked to maintenance, using some systems for big data to give us some confidence in the technology, plus we also identified something important which was our champions in the team who would be the high performing people to drive this change.
Drilling further down, there are also strategic priorities and a digitization vision for the technical division (figure 2)

With costs, it’s important the we make the right decision for the right reason so we have good control over costs, including total cost of ownership. Sustainability is a subject that gets regularly aired in the sector because everybody wants to be sustainable. Etihad has already taken a leading position with a number of ecoflights which readers might have read about; involving new technologies with a young and efficient fleet really helped to reduce the airline’s carbon footprint. There have already been some great successes and it is something that Etihad wants to continue to pursue with the objective to be net zero by 2050.
In 2018, we started with a new management team and a five-year vision (figure 3).

One of the major projects implemented was the eTechLog8 (ETL/ELB) which we had to deploy at the worst possible time. On 23 March 2020, all of the passenger fleet was grounded. Nonetheless, the eTechLog8 project was deployed during the pandemic, over a few years (figure 4) and is now live across the whole fleet.

We’ll cover both the journey to implementation of the eTechLog8 and what Etihad sees as the approach as well as the key elements and the results achieved with this implementation. It reflects what we see as our core digital transformation values.

The project started with a mandate in August 2019 when Etihad Airways decided that we wanted to transform our log book system. The first thing we did was to select what we felt was the best partner with the best solution for Etihad’s needs. This was Conduce’s eTechLog88 solution. We partnered with Conduce to ensure that the airline had the right solution to support this ambition going forward. We also teamed up with our authorities early in this phase to ensure that they also took part in our journey of transformation because, at that time there was no operator in the UAE with an approved electronic techlog.
Let’s start with the key milestones of the project (figure 4).
without a single passenger aircraft flying. The project team with management decided that they had to take a critical decision to move backwards or forwards. The decision was taken to move forwards. The eTechLog8 project was re-deployed on the only fleet in operation, the freighters. Within three months we were able to transform the project onto the triple seven freighter fleet and approached the authority to give the go-ahead for a proof of concept, which they approved. That meant that Etihad was able to run the electronic log book and the paper log book in parallel. In a further three months, the go-live was agreed with the authority to go ahead and deploy the ETL/ELB on the Etihad Airways fleet. That made Etihad the first airline in the UAE to deploy an electronic techlog solution on their fleet.
The first step was to make sure that the project was not too complex: we didn’t want to identify a lot of deliverables without being able to deliver, so the project

Since then, a point was reached in September 2021 where it was possible to deploy the electronic log system across the whole fleet along with integration with the MIS and archiving systems. That was the journey and milestones but readers will want to know how it was done, how it was achieved and the approach taken to get there (figure 5).
How we achieved that was with a lot of focus on two areas: the key elements of the project itself. One is the things that need to done to make sure that the projects is successful; and two is who will do the project.

We went on to build up the integration with the MIS system, a lot of testing was involved with new versions and old versions; there was a lot of development on that area. The final phase was coordinating a deployment plan which was not only about an electronic log system that was coming in but also about making sure that we had the right resources, that the aircraft were on the ground on time for the deployment with all the other departments prepared for possible impact through the deployment having issues. It was a massive exercise to make sure that everything went smoothly and that had to be done with a very competent team (figure 6).
On the right side, you’ll see that the team wasn’t only eTechLog8 specialists. We assembled a team from within the organization; our Part 145, our flight operations, our CAMO and our quality; we also made sure that the MCC (Maintenance Control Center) and the Business Centers were fully equipped to support this project. The Training Department along with the IT and the AMOS departments were supporting the project to ensure that it was all implemented together.Itwasn’t only about having the people from those departments, they were staff who had no previous project experience, but we approached it with the same philosophy of investing in our people, making sure that they were able to stand up and deliver where it mattered most. All of the focus elements and the teams put together made sure that the project was linearly progressive to avoid having any department or any core area left behind. The project was able to deliver on all fronts and in all departments together at the time of deployment.

The first one was to keep it simple: remove the paper techlog, deploy the electronic techlog. That was done on the only fleet that was operating at the time, the B777 freighters, and the team made sure that they were able to sustain and satisfy the authorities that it would be possible to be completely competent on the electronic log system.

We had to focus and make sure that we covered every element of this change process. We had to look at the existing documentation and procedures because a new platform, a new landscape meant there would be changes to procedures and processes. The device had to be configured to make sure that it gave the airline what it needed and that we changed where the device was giving more. The biggest challenge was training the
The next and the biggest phase was to deploy the electronic tech log to the remaining aircraft in the fleet. We also decided to go ahead fully with the integration with the MIS system and the archiving system. Today, the Etihad Airways fleet operates with these systems completely integrated.

A further phase which is also a continuing phase is to develop the cabin log solution so that Etihad is able to realize all the benefits of the digitization platform of the electronic solution plus develop enhanced integration with the existing platforms at Etihad Airways as well as looking for new platforms.

there were any transmission failures and which were able to be used without any delay to the aircraft. More than 59,000 defects have been raised through the system with nearly 10,000 deferred defects running (closing and opening). It was not a smooth run to start with and there were a significant number of delays that related either to a limited knowledge or user interface or just clarifications. However, we made sure that we addressed these delays, there was a supporting system to ensure that delays were immediately addressed and rectified or supported. As a result, user satisfaction, measured through a user survey, was 99 percent either relatively happy or very happy with the new system.

The post deployment statistics are on the right of the figure, statistics that Etihad wanted to use to measure how much of a challenge this deployment would be. The MCC received supporting calls and you will see a big spike at the beginning when the system was first deployed and there were a huge number of calls coming in to the MCC which had been prepared to make sure that they would be able to address most of the regular queries. As the deployment went through and stabilized, the number of calls reduced. Then, with a second phase of deployment, there was another increase in calls with another set of queries and the stabilization again.

In figure 8, we’ve illustrated what is quite normal for any project but it is a matter of how the change is presented and what an electronic and digitized solution brings to the environment.
Initially there was a spike in delays which, again, were related to user experience or lack of user knowledge and them calling up the MCC (see above). Most delays were less than 15 minutes and reportable delays were less than ten minutes but we wanted to still measure every single delay and find out what the reasons for the delays were. Similarly, reportable events, whether it was the device or the process, were monitored so that, right after the initial spike there was a drop. All this data was then presented back to the authority to make sure that they could see the confidence in Etihad being in control of the whole process. It wasn’t that there were no issues, there were issues but the team was transparent and knew that we were able to advise and bring solutions to the process and to the issues in good time and to take corrective action.

The paper tech log is just a conventional system and the information it records is only the tip of the iceberg. Whatever happens on the paper tech log doesn’t come back in for a long time which means one cannot see everything that’s running behind the scenes. But, with the electronic tech log it is possible to get better visibility of the whole iceberg with: a full view of the iceberg; live visibility

Now that the deployment has been achieved, we want to start talking about the Cabin eLog solution. We also want to participate in AMOS optimization and development. Etihad has some very competent people supported by a great AMOS Competence Center. We want to progress with paperless maintenance, something that every airline and operator should aim for. The aim is to enhance the eTechLog8 and AMOS design. Etihad has one of the best integrations currently in the market but there is always room for improvement and we can help our people to improve those integrations with AMOS and with the technical system. The focus is on smart data as opposed to big data. Etihad has already tried big data solutions and wants to work with them but has also identified that if we don’t know how to use the data, we don’t get to best outcome. Smart data involves the people in the business who can really use the data and give a meaning to the data.
KEY AREAS AND CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTORS
First is the system; it is a critical element and needs to be a good fit for your own airline. Also, data is something really important. There must be clean data plus you need to know how to use that data. The process needs to be aligned with the system and the process will feed the data to the system. Finally, the people who are the ones who will drive the change, will be able to use the system,

There were also workflow driven notifications with data driving any notifications, any warnings needed somewhere for someone to action immediately. the eTechLog8, the digitization and transformation brings greater visibility leading to improved airworthiness while pushing Etihad to get faster enhancements across the organization. Overall, figure 8 is a key slide for take-aways because it really shows what the eTechLog8 will create. It will create a lot of problems because the increased visibility will suddenly raise a lot of previously hidden issues but such problems are not linked to the eTechLog8, they were already there but not visible. Nevertheless, it is something that people in the organization need to be alerted to at the outset of the project.

Nothing can stand still and already Etihad Airways is looking to its future plans (figure 10).

Proactive maintenance: here again we have tried a system but were not very satisfied and there is currently a lot of information with the current format and there is a lot of work that can be done in this area before we try to predict something which is not yet happening. Our priority is to work on proactive maintenance. Etihad Airways has already had some great wins on process automation which is definitely something that the business wishes to progress.

I have been with CrossConsense for more than ten years and most of my colleagues have also worked here for a very long time. PZ: I do not have a specific disappointment; I can only say that we learn from our mistakes. There are times when we do something that is not correct or does not lead to the desired solution. When that happens, we do not try to sweep the problem under the carpet but face any mistake proactively, contact the customer, discuss what went wrong and learn from it.

In a similar manner DARS will also speed-up the offboarding process. If an airline is selling or doing a lease return on an engine, there’s a huge amount of reporting that needs to be created to go back to the leasing company; but also, audit and verification on the compliance of that engine with lease and lease return terms. With DARS, that process will be automated. This type of idea is one that people in the industry have been thinking about for a long time. TrustFlight commenced development on the project when they opened the Vancouver office in 2020. Part of what they applied for was called a Super-Cluster project, generally the Canadian Government is open to supporting projects like this, and so, from June 2021, the project got support from Canada’s Digital Technology Super-Cluster. That was also when the other partners got involved. Development of the systems is still underway with an intention by the beginning of next year, 2023, to have a launch customer for the Digital Engine Log and the underlying DARS system.
From a user perspective, the partners are also developing what they call digital workflow applications that sit on top of DARS. The ambition, ultimately is to have many different software companies and providers being able to build applications on top of DARS and the collaborators have started that with building the Digital Engine Log which will be used for managing engines. The initial focus within DARS will be on engines because they represent a mini-airframe in this context with the same technical challenges, the same number of stakeholders that need to be involved but, compared to an airframe, engines are bit more manageable in terms of component numbers and complexity. The program can then be scaled up. The Digital Engine Log is essentially a tool that will be used to manage engines within airlines and leasing companies to provide a lot of the ongoing quality and compliance information and automation to make sure that that engine continues to comply with SBs and ADs that have arisen for that model: what it will also do is make the onboarding and offboarding of those engines a lot easier than it has been. At the moment, for an airline that buys or leases a new engine, there is usually one to two weeks of work to get that engine onboarded into the system; all of the component data has to be uploaded with the current status of those components and the current status of any modifications on the engine; it all has to come into the system and then all of the data has to be quality checked. DARS will reduce the onboarding time from one to two weeks to less than a day; a real saving because usually the airline is still paying for the engine in that time but cannot use it until it’s in the system in order for the airline to ensure full control of it from a maintenance perspective (figure 1).

In the Summer 2022 issue of Aircraft IT MRO, we looked at why DARS (Digital Aircraft Records System) was needed, who is involved in its development and what they each bring to the project. In part two, we’ll look at what DARS is, how it will work what will be its impact on the industry and how it can be implemented.

There are two main components to DARS. One is more back-end infrastructure to support integrations between systems. In order to facilitate the transfer of data from an MRO which has one system where they’re tracking maintenance data versus an airline that has a different system, DARS facilitates the integration between those systems but also provides automation in terms of the audit and verification of that data. So, in a paper world, someone would have to go through and manually audit and check to make sure that the right items such as Service Bulletins (SBs) and Airworthiness Directives (ADs) have been complied with, DARS builds in technology to be able to automate a lot of that verification. That’s all part of the back-end infrastructure, the plumbing for the industry that will allow data to flow between different systems: it’s not that exciting from an end-user perspective as it’s all hidden technology that users don’t see.

leveraging some of the existing standards where they do exist. The ATA SPEC2500 and SPEC2000 standards are being used, as well as other standards which aren’t so well developed. What’s also been interesting on the standards side is that a lot of the existing standards are built around replicating the paper way of doing things as opposed to being more forward looking and understanding the benefits and opportunities that can be gained from having data stored digitally. For example, an

standards because they’ll be whatever was decided when they implemented those systems. So, the project is having to deal with multiple systems, integrating those systems and figuring out how to get all the data to align and tie together. In the context where there might be a common component which was being managed in multiple different systems, having to tie all that together and make sense is a challenge, especially when there might be conflict

Another challenge is more cultural. As we’ve already said, the aviation industry is quite risk averse and is still at an early stage of digital transformation within the industry. So, trying to make sure that people understand the benefits and what can be gained from having new systems or better ways of doing things always comes up against a cultural barrier. Also, the industry is not that fast moving and a high turnover of staff in some businesses during COVID can mean that someone with whom there has been good progress on digital adoption either leaves or is replaced which slows things down.
Airworthiness Directive (AD) will have compliance information written into it which might be based on serial numbers so that all aircraft with the serial number will have to have the AD incorporated. Even things like that are not standardized today and computer programs have trouble working with different standards for the same thing. The DARS program is setting out, at that level, to align standards and design things for the future in order to be able to automate a lot of the processing of that data.

A further obstacle has been that the industry often goes from feast to famine. One minute everything is going well and people are just making sure that aircraft are flying day to day operations, in which case it’s harder to get people to look long-term; then there is the scenario where, as in COVID when operations come to a complete halt, people get furloughed and no-one has the time or resources to be investing into long-term projects.
WHAT AIRLINES WILL NEED TO MOVE TO DARS
These days, most IT infrastructure is in the Cloud and most offerings are software as a service (SaaS), of which DARS will be one. So, users are unlikely to encounter any needs for new equipment in order to access DARS. There are not that many drastic changes required to make the move to the new system. The project is not replacing existing systems; it is more about building tools that fit into the processes where those existing systems stop, often at the interfaces between different organizations. Say an engine is going out to a shop visit to get overhauled, the work scope might be produced in an existing M&E system but, in many cases still, that will be within a separate Excel file; then all the way to providing that to the external MRO and then receiving the package once that

The immediate impact of being able to speed up the on/offboarding of engines will benefit both sides. For an MRO, there is currently a lot of work for them to generate the package once they’ve completed, say, an overhaul on an engine; that takes time and can, in some cases, delay getting the engine out of the shop and back to the airline. DARS will help speed up that process as well as the onboarding into the airline when they receive it back.

IMMEDIATE AND LONGER-TERM BENEFITS OF DARS
We’ve already covered the benefit to the spares inventory plus, on the offboarding side, being able to more quickly complete a lease return. An issue that many airlines currently face is that they have legacy fleets which they need to sell or to return to the lessor. Often, a rate-limiting step is assembling the packages and doing the return: DARS will significantly speed that process as well as helping to provide more proactive guidance as to whether an asset is complying with the lease return conditions. Separately from the regulatory side of a lease, there will also be quite a few different lease return conditions in terms of how much time is remaining on an engine, component requirements, modifications, service bulletin requirements. With DARS it will be possible to automatically validate all that and provide a guide as to how long it’s going to take to make that engine compliant for a lease return. That will provide real saving on not prolonging a lease return which is often where an airline incurs the cost of paying excess lease fees after the engine has left revenue service but has not yet been returned to the lessor.
THE IMPACT OF DARS ON MRO/M&E FUNCTIONS
overhaul has been completed with that package coming in as paper, which someone will have to type into the M&E system. DARS will replace that part of the process which tends often to be made up of manual paperwork. In terms of implementing DARS, the main thing that needs to be done is building interfaces with the existing systems that the operators or MROs will have. After that, it’s largely process changes from the old manual ones to using the new tool. A big system like AMOS will touch a lot of parts of an organization so they would be naturally reluctant to make a dramatic transition.
Technical records will be impacted by the move to DARS; at the moment, many people are still dealing with paper records and the move to DARS will make that process a lot more efficient. Also, general functions will be improved in areas such as asset management of airframes and engines. The asset management department which is responsible for managing leases, for example, and the general condition of engines, will be using DARS and specifically the Digital Engine Log, to manage the engines as opposed to the using the combination of spreadsheets and other tools as they do today. More generally, planning and forecasting will change on the maintenance side of the business but even on the operations side as well because, when we’re talking about the onboarding and offboarding of engines, that changes a lot of how things are planned. The fact that there will a saving of a week or two weeks on both processes will have a significant impact because, for instance, it might become possible to get rid of one or two spare engines that are no longer needed when, across a large fleet, there might with DARS be enough spare capacity within the engine pool to reduce the spares inventory. Usually, a fleet with 50 engines in service will keep around a further ten percent of that number as spares. If those five spares can be cut to three, that will be a considerable saving.
Longer term, as more data insights to the system are gained, things like reliability will also be impacted and some other parts. In the short term, a lot of the impacts will be on the process side with reductions in on/offboarding times and also general visualization and understanding of the status of the engines. There is, built into the tool, a timeline which shows what stage the engine is at so that it can be tracked throughout.
The other area of benefit is in compliance and the auditing of records to make sure that everything is correct. Many of the errors that occur are human errors; automation of processes will avoid that. In the longer term, the ability to utilize the data, having more of a whole life history for an engine or component will provide benefit in terms of higher reliability and availability for those components. What is surprising at the moment is that about sixty percent of maintenance costs come from unscheduled events. One of the longer-term goals with DARS is to reduce that sixty percent as far as possible.

Regulators themselves will also be set to benefit from the digital transformation enabled by DARS. Put simply, the role of the regulator is to maintain oversight of organizations within their remit and ensure they are complying with regulations. Today, this is mostly achieved by auditing: going into organizations and spotchecking records and processes to verify compliance. In organizations with manual and paper-based processes this is the only way to do it. However, DARS paves the way for what’s called continuous compliance. Already being rolled out in other regulated sectors such as healthcare and finance, continuous compliance involves using systems to constantly monitor data and automatically highlight noncompliances. This enables oversight to be achieved in a much more efficient manner, while also reducing the risk of non-compliances not being caught — a common event today as spot-checks are only carried out at a point-in-time, usually annually, and only targeting a small sample of records or processes.

Longer term this is not just an initiative for TrustFlight or the other partners to do; it’s something that we’d want to be a cross-industry initiative with airlines, software companies, MROs and other industry stakeholders involved in building an ecosystem around DARS that will facilitate a lot of the transactions in and management of maintenance data longer term.

For an MRO using DARS, they’ll be able to process more work in less time with the potential to realize greater profit. Also, for OEMs, assembling documentation for new engines and new aircraft is quite a difficult process as they have to assemble material such as reports and compliance statements from multiple different parts of the organization. That takes time and is not error free using current processes.

more recognition of regulators within themselves: there’s a lot of work and inefficiency that gets generated at the moment when moving assets and components across jurisdictions. What a European country might have in terms of requirements might be different from what, say, Transport Canada requires; this is especially true when looking at modifications or changes that have happened to an aircraft or engine. Part of the difficulty with that is because the full history and timeline of a modification might not be known because it might be a surveyor or inspector in Canada who has signed it off and said they’re happy with it but there might not be any supporting documentation for that. One intent with DARS is to be able to have that supporting documentation on the system but also to get the regulators to recognize it. So, if there is a regulator in one jurisdiction, they could look at a modification of change and see the background material and why this modification was accepted in another jurisdiction. Whereas today, it is often necessary to undo a modification or change in order to move an asset or component to a new jurisdiction.
The major step will be the launch of the Digital Engine Log in 2023 and we’d hope to soon be able to confirm who the launch customer for that will be.

JC: A scenario that played out early in our company history comes to mind; however, I would not classify it as a disappointment, but rather a challenge and learning experience. During one of our first system implementations for a customer servicing the U.S. DoD, we were met early in the project with a lack of electronic data. Most of the fleet data was still in a hardcopy format and sporadically stored due to the deployed status of the fleet. Understanding our project timeline, we made the challenging decision to send personnel into an austere environment to find, review, and manually upload the required data. We worked jointly with our client and the U.S. DoD to reconcile the fleet data, which, ultimately allowed us to complete the project successfully and on time. The valuable lesson learned from that early experience, of leaning into a problem and continuing to find a solution for our clients, has driven ROTA’s success over the years.
JC: Expanded application within the VR/AR (Virtual Reality / Augmented Reality) environment, utilizing digital twins, and integration into existing M&E IT systems allowing maintenance personnel to evaluate the current conditions of the asset, predict future behaviors, refine the control, and optimize the operations. A digital twin reflects the current asset conditions and includes relevant historical data, allowing access to a library of data that can be shared across operators to improve reliability and maintenance practices.

necessary to have a developed aviation software system which could support the CAMO. Seabury, having started in 2002, had only recently entered the aviation market and, being a young airline, we felt there would be an advantage to be gained from working and co-operating with another business at roughly the same development stage as Enter Air, and to develop the system based on the needs of Enter Air.
Mostly, this is tourists in the summer whereas in winter, autumn and spring, it’s more ad hoc flights and special flights as for military customers and for sports customers (players and fans). The fleet comprises Boeing 737s with 23 NGs and two MAXs. This case study is about a specific function that a satisfied client wanted from their long-standing MRO IT solution provider.
A number of factors led Enter Air to the decision that a new MRO software and fleet management program was needed. From 2011, there were discussions inside the airline about implementing MRO software instead of using Excel workbooks and other Microsoft products to manage MRO processes and workflows. It was understood that, in order to grow the fleet, it would be

ALKYM; THE SOLUTION CHOSEN FOR ENTER AIR
Three years ago, Enter Air approached Seabury Solutions with the need to have a planning optimization tool that would enable them to better understand flight scheduling as well as to understand all, of the work orders that are created, together with the job cards that need to be executed inside those work orders. It sounds simple but this was a huge endeavor not only from a software development point of view but also as far as the user interface is concerned. Both parties worked together; Seabury Solutions designed the first stage of the tool, Enter Air approved it and Seabury started developing the actual solution which is now an established solution used by Enter Air plus it gives Seabury a great inroad into flight operations because it’s possible to combine flight scheduling with maintenance activity. That was a useful project on which both parties worked and there are more to come.

The process started with a normal RFP (request for proposal) from the responses to which Enter Air selected three short-listed vendors from which group the final selection was made for Alkym from Seabury Solutions. A key reason for that was the developmental compatibility of the two businesses; the Enter Air team highlighted to Seabury Solutions that they were keen to have a partnership in which they could grow with the IT vendor. For that reason, the relationship between the two has always been special, not only from a technical support point of view but also with special requests: recently at Enter Air there have been some large-scale special projects to improve the operation: the airline worked together with Seabury Solutions on those challenges. Even after an eleven years relationship, everything is renewed whenever there is a push for a new objective and new levels of excellence. For instance, working with Enter Air, Seabury Solutions developed a planning optimization tool.
SELECTING AND IMPLEMENTING A NEW MRO SOLUTION

Furthermore, all of those areas have inside of them different applications that communicate with each other, it is an integrated solution that all works on a platform that has been developed over twenty years. The philosophy of that platform is empowering the end user. Everything that Seabury does is about how the user could modify it, use it and extract data so as not to have to keep returning to the vendor for reconfiguration of the software.
CHALLENGES ENCOUNTERED
This is an important factor from Enter Air’s point of view; with the definition of the interfaces, we also have plans for our next steps, for future interfaces or improvements. When COVID started, Enter Air was significantly affected by the measures. Now, the airline sector is once again on a firm footing and Enter Air has re-started conversations about future projects, including working alongside one of the project managers from Seabury with normal co-operation resumed.
During the time when COVID had to be considered, the Enter Air team requested Seabury Solutions to finish a particular interface which communicates the airline’s Operations with the Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) operation. It’s a massive project, the type of project that does not require too frequent site visits but still needs visits every two or three months. With COVID, that was impossible so it all went online which was a challenge and there was some delay. It meant there had to be some creative ideas to replace the on-site presence with online alternatives. One specific delay was the development of the requested interface based on SPEC 2000 Charter 80.

What was found to be pleasantly surprising at Enter Air, with projects there having been long-term and not being certain of the effects from the delays, was that, once the re-starts got underway, things picked up quite smoothly.
case of Alkym at Enter Air, although the system is well-developed with many options so would not be easy to learn in one two-week class even working intensively, Enter Air has been using Alkym since 2011. That meant that training was not necessary but Seabury did make visits where one of their project managers went to the airline to work side-by-side with users on the new tool.
As important as training is the continuous support that Seabury Solutions maintains for Enter Air and, indeed, all customers. That allows both parties to regularly review how the solution is performing and, as importantly, how it is affecting the processes in the airline. The system is built for everybody but specific airlines will have their own CAMO requirements or even the regulator might have other requirements: Seabury’s continuous support ensures that each airline can ensure the system meets their own needs.
With CAA audits twice a year, the auditing of the system is constant so that the CAA knows exactly how the system is behaving and what changes are being implemented. Seabury has many years of experience working with CAAs around the world through their safety oversight software and has a number of CAA customers.

For other airlines who might be considering a similar development to that undertaken by Enter Air, we’d suggest that a key feature that we were looking for is flexibility. From discussions with colleagues around the sector, it seems that the biggest software providers are good for a ready solution for each operator. Each CAMO, each technical department, each airline is organized in its own specific way; so, a system that is flexible and can adjust to the operator’s or airline’s needs is the most important consideration. It is important to know whether the system under consideration can be tailored to the user’s needs plus how they will see the system in the end. It is also very important to know the provider’s manpower resource, how fast changes can be made, how long it would take in adjusting the system, how often there are system updates. If the software cannot be tailored to the user’s needs, then it’s not a solution.

BENEFITS REALIZED
One thing that, on reflection, could have been done differently, is that we should have devoted more time to the change process and/or arranged for more on-site support. As a specific example, the Maintenance Program report was covering all the information needed but the format that Enter Air wanted to use to provide that information to the civil aviation authority was very specific to them. So, in the spirit of Seabury Solutions’ philosophy of empowering the end user, the vendor brought forward a development that had been scheduled for the next version of Alkym and instigated it right away. The development process was accelerated and now Enter Air can customize their own maintenance program reports. If ever changes need to be added or removed, the airline can do that for themselves while, should there be any technical support needed, they can call Seabury Solutions. This all fits with Seabury’s continuing to visit customers for a few months after a new implementation or upgrade. Those interactions ensure an all-round view of the system in use, and how to resolve any problems that might arise.

Konrad Dymowski started his career at Enter Air in July 2011, working in the Technical Department where he has continued but with changing positions and responsibilities within that department. He currently holds the position of Technical Manager, managing a team of 50 people, building the structure of a PART-CAMO. The biggest benefit that we have appreciated at Enter Air is that the system is tailored for the airline’s needs. We did not have to adjust to the system but rather the system was adjusted to fit the airline. As a result, we are very confident that the system is controlling our CAMO and, from that, each responsibility, whether that is logistics, spare parts control, warehouse invoicing, maintenance tasks and planning, or all of the engineering responsibilities. These estimates show that the Digital Thread maturity is high at the beginning of the lifecycle, during the engineering and manufacturing of the asset, but drops significantly when the asset is in its operational phase. You can imagine the glow of the Digital Thread dimming once the asset enters service, causing the Digital Twin to become less reliable and detailed.
operational use there are several stakeholders with a vested interest in the digital twin. The main stakeholders are the operator, OEM, MROs and lessor. Since these stakeholders do not have shared access to all generated data, the challenge in maintaining the Digital Twin becomes the accessibility of the generated data. This accessibility for the OEM drops drastically as the asset enters into service.
A Digital Thread is made up of all the records and data generated and stored throughout the lifecycle of an asset, from design to operational use and retirement. Imagine a thread running through time, buzzing and glowing with all the information generated about the asset. This information includes automated and human-made digital records, as well as sensor data generated by the asset itself. The Digital Thread lays the foundation for the Digital Twin, meaning that the more data that is continuously gathered about the asset, the more reliable and detailed the Digital Twin will be. Modern engines and aircraft generate ever larger volumes of sensor data, increasing the value potential of data-driven solutions. The digital records, in turn, are essential for understanding the context of the sensor data as, without them, the raw sensor data is less valuable, or even worthless. More on these two categories later in the article.
Typically, the OEM lacks access to the majority of data generated during operational use of the asset, yet has much to gain from maintaining a high-quality Digital Twin. Analytics-based insights from Digital Twins feed into the OEM’s product development process, but also allow them to offer value-added services such as health monitoring and predictive maintenance, enabling extended, predictable and more reliable operation for the operator. The digital twin also enables the OEM to offer performance-based contracting, such as Rolls-Royce’s ‘Power by the Hour’ lease model, in which the customer is billed based on actual utilization of the asset.
During the operational phase of an asset, there are two main categories of generated data; sensor data generated by the asset, and digital records generated by information systems and people. These categories of data are fundamentally different in the following aspects:
