I
t would be easy to think that all that mattered in the past year was the COVID-19 pandemic. Of course, it certainly had a, hopefully, once-in-alifetime impact on commercial aviation but it also meant that a whole raft of processes and new technologies that had previously been considered but, perhaps, not acted upon, came to the fore. In order to operate safely while the pandemic was still rife but also to future-proof the industry from having to endure another full shut-down should another such event occur in the future, it has been necessary to re-think some of the ways things are done. Also, none of the challenges that pre-dated COVID have gone away. The ‘green revolution’ continues to influence the way things are done and not only by making fuel management important but also by bringing to the fore a whole range of efficiency measures and improvements. In light of that, the articles we’re bringing to you in this issue are especially relevant to all of those priorities and they highlight not only the role of ever improving software but also that the industry needs to take time to think about the future and where it thinks it should be going in order that any technology developments support a better way of working rather than just speeding up old and outdated processes. There is a superb case study from Norwegian about how that airline has adopted a Cruise Profile Optimizer which has not only improved flight planning but has also delivered fuel savings as well as time savings. In a similar vein, the Solutions in Practice
article from Wizz Air emphasizes the importance of weight and balance in supporting efficient flying but also supporting other green objectives that the airline is pursuing. The case study from Edelweiss Air tackles a familiar topic of documentation. It explains how solutions based on dynamic and digital technologies doesn’t only get rid of paper but generate efficiencies in all sorts of processes which saves time, saves money plus improves safety and regulatory compliance. The Vendor Flight Log in this issue comes from Logipad. We’re very familiar with EFBs by now but, of course, developers continue to improve their solutions, add further functions and Apps and integrate the solutions into the broader IT infrastructure of airlines; in short, adapt to changing markets and needs. Finally, we have an article (the first of three) that considers the need for the industry to radically re-think some of the fundamental functions, attitudes and processes that have served it well up until now but which might need to be a lot different if they are to serve the sector as well in the future. Korean Air chooses NAVBLUE’s Flysmart+ Korean Air, the flag carrier of South Korea, announced at the start of February 2021 that it had signed a contract with NAVBLUE to digitalize and optimize its cockpit operation with the electronic flight bag (EFB) solution Flysmart+ on iOS devices. This state-of-the-art solution, the most installed EFB in the air not only streamlines the processes of take-off, landing performance, inflight performance, documentation and eQRH but also provides plenty of fuel saving opportunities. Korean Air, was already using ROPS+, and will benefit from NAVBLUE’s Electronic Flight Bag solution to improve cockpit operation efficiency and optimize aircraft performance computations. More than 260 airlines are using Flysmart+, representing more than 6000 Airbus aircraft in operation. 2020 was a busy year for the team at Bytron HQ. Qantas renews contract to use Vistair’s Docunet

Bristow Helicopters renews their charts and navigation data service with NAVBLUE Bristow Helicopters Limited, a NAVBLUE customer for more than 10 years, announced in late January that they had recently renewed their Charts+ and Navigation+ services. Part of the world-leading Bristow Group Inc, UK operations serve government and civil organisations including UK Search and Rescue [SAR] and North Sea rig transport. A fleet of approximately 50 helicopters rely on navigation data and electronic charts for planning and flight operations. eTT Aviation adds customers in 2020 In mid-January 2021, eTT Aviation was able to announce that it had wrapped up a successful 2020 adding nine clients—including a drone operator, growing the team 81% to 47 people, and acquiring Eagle Cap Software. eTT added nine aviation customers in 2020, including Aquiline Drones, CSA Air, Eastern Airlines, Kalitta Charters II, Mountain Air Cargo, R1 Airlines, and Ravn Alaska. The addition of Aquiline Drones demonstrates the flexibility of the SkedFlex product and ability of eTT to rapidly respond to ever changing industry requirements. Aquiline Drones plans to use the application to support their rapidly expanding group of drone pilots.
“The passion of the eTT team to adapt their SkedFlex product to the UAV market dovetails nicely with the Aquiline Drones spirit of approaching the use of drones as aircraft operating in an airline environment. Aquiline Drones picks eTT Aviation SkedFlex to support expanding pilot operations In late January 2021, Aquiline Drones announced that it has signed a multi-year agreement with eTT Aviation to use the SkedFlex product to support Aquiline’s network of thousands of pilots nationwide. Aquiline Drones operates a small airline making it one of only a few drone companies in the US operating under a 14-CFR Part 135 Air Carrier Certificate. Because of this, they are implementing the same systems in use in a traditional airline for added safety and security of their drone operation. EVA Air confirms its confidence and renews contract for codeshare management solution with Lufthansa Systems In early February 2021, Lufthansa Systems announced that EVA Air has signed a long-term agreement extending the use of the codeshare management solution SchedConnect. “We’ve been using SchedConnect for several years and have found it to be a valuable system for both our passengers and EVA. From the day we began using it, we have experienced a continually improving product and excellent customer service from Lufthansa Systems. SchedConnect supports codeshare management and helps us more effectively navigate a fully automated process,” said Eric Chiu, Senior Vice President at EVA Air. “SchedConnect enhances benefits and synchronizes with our partners’ schedule data. We always have access to a complete schedule in one central system.” SchedConnect is currently the most technologically advanced system of its kind. Uganda Airlines signs-up for the Paperless Flight Bag™ EFB Platform In mid-February 2021, IFS, the Copenhagen based EFB Software Platform SaaS provider, announced that it has signed a contract with Uganda National Airlines Co. Ltd. based at Entebbe International Airport, Uganda, to implement the Paperless Flight Bag™ EFB platform solution from IFS. AeroLogic implements SITA’s eWAS to deliver operating efficiencies Towards the end of FGebruary 2021, it was announced that AeroLogic has become the first European cargo airline to implement the SITA eWAS Pilot weather monitoring solution, minimizing the associated cost of weather-related flight disruption. Weather phenomena are a significant cause of flight delays, which cost airlines billions of dollars annually, according to research from data group Cirium. Adverse weather, such as icing conditions, can also cause up to US$500k in damage to a modern aircraft engine. eWAS Pilot, used by 50,000 pilots worldwide, provides accurate 4D weather forecasts and real-time updates from various sources to warn about weather hazards such as thunderstorms, lightning, clear air turbulence, strong winds, icing, and even volcanic ash. Armed with a complete and most-up-to-date picture of weather events, AeroLogic pilots can make informed, proactive decisions to re-route flights to
avoid significant weather where needed. Furthermore, they can develop more economical, intelligent, and flexible flight route plans, ensuring strong on-time performance while reducing fuel burn and carbon emissions. Viva Aerobus embarks towards an even greener future with predictive eco-flying solution ‘Opti Climb’ In late February 2021, Viva Aerobus, Mexico’s ultra low-cost carrier with the lowest CO2 emissions per passenger, announced that it is taking its culture of ‘The Future is Green’ into the digital age using machine learning performance models to recommend customized climb speeds to its pilots for each flight to significantly reduce fuel burn and emissions.
Leveraging data to reduce emissions
Climb-out, which represents the first 20 to 30 minutes of flight at high thrust rates, offers the most potential for fuel savings. However, it is also the most complex phase, with many parameters changing at the same time as the aircraft ascends. The use of historical flight data and Artificial Intelligence allows users to address this complexity and predict fuel burn in different scenarios to recommend optimal climb speeds to pilots for each flight, taking into account individual aircraft performance and accurate 4D weather forecasts. Thanks to OptiClimb, which Viva Aerobus has implemented from January 1st 2021 further
to extensive validation tests, the airline will be able to save in average 70kg of fuel for each climb, which could represent a fleetwide carbon footprint reduction of at least 14,000 tons of CO2 per year.

StorkJet’s aircraft performance monitoring — advanced aircraft diagnostics In early January 2021, StorkJet announced the introduction of a new technology for the advancedAPM system, which transforms observed flight data to specified conditions with unparalleled precision. This enables tracking of aircraft performance on a daily basis and in close co-relation with undertaken maintenance actions. The possibilities of this new feature (based on different engine examples) are presented in this paper. Up until now, StorkJet has shown key aircraft performance diagnostic parameters on the advancedAPM platform. While this is a helpful tool that shows the status of performance related components over time, this indicator struggles with volatile changes of flight conditions like attitude, weight or temperature. In some cases, meaningful results can be observed only after months of regular flights. To significantly improve this method, StorkJet introduced Normalised Diagnostic Parameters to advancedAPM. This system shows how the key parameters affecting aircraft performance would change if all flights were performed under the same conditions. This method removes the effects of seasonality, different flight conditions and data anomalies. It allows analysts to extract pure changes in parameter behaviour, the impact of deterioration and unbiased trends. The Normalised Diagnostics Parameters therefore, allow users to narrow down the list of suspects during analysis.

The thin line on the graph shows a conventional N1 run. A very low N1 value can be seen at the turn of March and April, and according to StorkJet’s analysis, this is the result of a very low cruising altitude of one of the flights. The thick line shows a normalised N1 without a visible jump. This is because the normalization shows what the N1 values would be if each flight was performed under the same conditions and, therefore, the same altitude.

The large fluctuations in parameters shown in November were due to extreme height and weight values. On a normalised chart, one could observe the undisturbed changes in parameters easily. When considering the EGT range, it’s important to note that it’s much smaller in the Normalised Engine Parameter chart because of the lack of environmental influences (primarily temperature dependence) that were removed by normalization.

An increase of normalized N2 (not visible on averaged N2) is reflected as higher deterioration (calculated from fuel burn). When viewing the conventional N2 chart, it is important to note the amount of noise and trends related to seasonal changes (Summer to Winter). By narrowing down the parameter changes, normalisation also highlights the rapid N2 growth in late March. Results show that the rapid growth is strongly associated with the increase in deterioration. While this change is difficult to see on the ordinary chart, the new system can effectively extract it thanks to the fact that it calculates what the parameter would look like if the flight

conditions were exactly the same every time. Engine parameters are normalised by combining two machine-learning models that learn from one another. These models can precisely show the changes in the parameters regardless of the conditions of the actual flights.
CASE IV
Thanks to the Normalized Diagnostic Parameters, more advanced and predictive diagnostics are available. Now, it is possible to catch changes in engine behaviour, pinpoint the root cause of deterioration to avoid increased fuel burn. On the example of fan blade erosion, it is easy to indicate how maintenance action changes the parameters. Charts 4 & 5. Normalized N1 and Fan Pressure Ratio as a function of engine hours. Fan blades replacement occurred around 11500 engine hours. The top chart shows Normalized N1 speed, the bottom chart shows normalized Fan Pressure Ratio (FPR). Up until 11 500 engine hour N1 was steadily increasing and FPR was steadily decreasing. Such behaviour is most likely caused by deterioration of the fan blades. The pressure generated by the fan decreases and to maintain the same thrust the fan has to rotate at higher speed. At 11 500 engine hour replacement of the fan blades took place and parameters returned to normal. This maintenance action resulted in 0.2% lower fuel burn. I
n this article, I want to share with readers what has been a very successful implementation, leveraging an in-flight cruise profile optimizer solution at Norwegian. Given that the COVID-19 pandemic has distorted so many outcomes and especially in the commercial aviation sector, all the numbers in this article are pre-COVID, so will be relevant for comparison with normal times. But first and for context, let me explain a little about the airline that is the subject of this case study.
NORWEGIAN
In 2019, Norwegian was the fifth largest low-cost carrier in the world with around 10,000 employees, flying 500 routes, and serving 150 destinations in Europe, North Africa, the Middle east, Asia, the Caribbean, South America, the US and Canada. Norwegian has been ranked the most fuel-efficient airline across the Atlantic (figure 1).

If airlines want to improve the fuel and cost efficiency today, it’s not enough on its own to be flying a brand-new, efficient aircraft but it is also sensible to optimize how the airplane is flown. As you can see, figure 2 depicts an aircraft flying at different altitudes utilizing the weather and flying the optimum area and level for the flight.

This is, in part, due to the fleet of very fuel-efficient aircraft but also to how those aircraft are operated, which is the subject for this article. Norwegian’s fleet includes Boeing 737 800 and 737 MAX aircraft.
So, what sort of projects does Norwegian undertake? A lot of vendors approach airlines with this or that product to save 2 percent of fuel. In order to determine which solution, if any, might be suitable for their purposes, Norwegian ran a trial. The problem was, as you can see in figure 3, is that there are significantly different wind speeds at different altitudes, even at the same way point or location.

Now, let’s look at an example for a typical wind altitude trade-off. Figure 5 is a table with an aircraft flying at 39,000ft and that’s the optimum level for the aircraft but there is no wind there whereas, at lower altitudes there are more favorable tail winds. The question is, will the tail wind encountered by flying lower not only break even against the optimum flight level with no wind but also deliver a benefit?

In the case used for figure 3, that variation ranged from 45 knots to 100 knots. For a pilot, if they’re flying against that wind, they will probably wish to be lower in order that the headwind is less whereas, if flying with the wind, they’ll want to be at a higher altitude to catch that better tailwind. However, as readers know, things are not that simple. Figure 4 shows the wind altitude trade-off that has to be considered.
WIND ALTITUDE TRADE-OFF
If there were no winds at all, aircraft would be flying at the Flight Management Computer (FMC) optimum level which is the best level for the aircraft in terms of its performance in still air with no wind to consider. But let’s introduce the factor of more favorable winds at lower levels and let’s say, for the example in figure 4, if the aircraft is flying 4,000 ft lower than the FMC’s optimum level, there would need to be 15 knots more tail wind or less headwind than at the FMC’s selected level to counter that level change and be at break-even.
FMC OPT is FL390 at 61.5 tons. At that level there is 0 WIND but tailwind is reported at lower levels. Actual TW at various levels in the table to the right. The level with the highest excess wind is FL 330 where 45 kts tailwind is 17 kts above the 28 kts break even wind. This is then the best FL, with a fuel saving of 3.7% compared to FMC OPT. Note that there is even more tailwind at FL310, but less excess wind, hence less savings. (Same saving for FL370 and FL310)

If the aircraft goes just 2,000ft below the current level, to 37,000ft, there would be a saving of 1.9 percent on fuel and most pilots might be pleased enough with that. But what if they could know that by dropping further to 35,000ft, there

could be a saving of 3.3 percent on fuel and at 33,000ft, a saving of 3.7 percent? Any further down to, say, 31,000ft, would take the aircraft so low that the added fuel burn would no longer be so well compensated for by the wind. This is a typical wind altitude trade-off; you need to look at the wind at each level, compare that with the increased fuel burn of the aircraft for that level, compared to the optimum level before you correct for the wind and then, after correction what would then be the optimum level. In the right-hand column is a calculation of fuel saved but it will be necessary to consider the full cost component in terms of the cost index.
IMPROVING PILOT DECISION SUPPORT
The challenge for Norwegian was how to better support pilots in the decision as to what would be the optimum level. It’s no use to retrospectively decide that this or that would have been the optimum level if there was no way for the flight crew to have known that on the day of operation. The challenge is that the planned profile from the flight planning system is not optimal because it is based on old weather forecasts; forecasts that are several hours old (figure 6).

If the flight plan was filed in the morning, the crew fly to the destination and then have to make the return flight back to base, by the time that return journey is started, the plan might already be as much as ten hours old which means that it won’t much help the crew on that return flight. So, having the most accurate information, optimizing the altitude calculation minutes before the flight is airborne or shortly after, will make for a more accurate prediction. The optimization that Norwegian started to look at was the subject of a collaboration between Norwegian and AVTECH in Sweden (figure 7), and was also supported by the Swedish energy agency. The purpose was to identify the optimum flight path, taking the most accurate weather information into account.

whereas the Met Office high-resolution wind data service reduces flying time to under one minute between each point. This means that the high-resolution weather data builds a much clearer picture about what is happening along an aircraft’s planned flight path. As a result, pilots are able to make more dynamic decisions based on the prevailing weather conditions. The system is a ground-based service which has a real-time communication with the aircraft providing a total cost optimal flight path based on the aircraft route, high-resolution weather forecast and high-resolution aircraft performance models (figure 9).

AVTECH’S VALUE PROPOSITION
AVTECH were able to offer a solution that addressed the pain points that Norwegian had identified in this ‘optimum flight level decision’ process (figure 8). Norwegian knew that crews were not performing the wind altitude tradeoffs but the AVTECH Figure 8 solution can identify the optimum positions and locations for a step climb, and send that information directly to the cockpit through an ACARS print-out or send it to the FMC to be displayed on a screen. This information is based on a 4D trajectory with a much clearer representation of winds which are derived from a 10K high resolution model. The current World Area Forecast System (WAFS) provided by the UK Met Office and NOAA has approximately 9 minutes of flying time between each point,

Comparing the weather forecast that is the default in the flight planning system (WAFS) and which is a 140km gridded data set with the weather forecast in the AVTECH algorithm, which is derived from a high-resolution grid, the density of forecast units is approximately 200 times more (figure 10).

the flight management computer will actually use the real wind to apply the algorithms to calculate optimization at any given point. With the wind altitude bands provided by AVTECH, the pilots are able to determine where to make the step-climbs and descents.

The team also looked at the wind data being produced by the flight planning system using WAFS and compared it with the high-resolution weather grid and there was an up to 50 percent reduction in wind error. This level of resolution supports a much more accurate prediction of the wind at a given way point or at any given location which will enable pilots to make more accurate decisions as to whether they should change the cruising level or stay at the current level. If more accurate winds are entered into the flight management computer, for the cruise phase of the flight, flying at the cruise level, there will be no performance gain unless the wind information is used to change level and for better steps; that’s the real achievement. Some believe that if you just have more accurate wind information into the FMC, you’ll automatically save fuel but, at any point in space,
The report itself is sent to the aircraft (figure 11) before or just after departure. Norwegian experimented with the timings starting with about eight minutes after departure, then down to five and now to three minutes after departure for the report to be delivered to the flight deck.

As readers will see, figure 11 shows a profile where the initial altitude in the flight plan was 34,000ft and then there are steps… step up to 36,000ft at Elvom, then drop back down to 34,000ft 24 miles prior to MAC before going up again to 36,000ft 217 miles prior to LPPO and, finally, up to 38,000ft 82 miles prior to LPPO. That would be the profile of the flight and the good thing with this profile

is that the print-out also quantifies the estimated savings: this is a comparison between what would be the case if the crew followed the original flight plan exactly and if they used this up-to-date profile calculated by AVTECH. For this particular flight, quite a long one from Stockholm to Tenerife, it can be seen that the fuel saving is 207.2 kilograms of fuel. Those 207kg of fuel for a Boeing 737 is equivalent to 1.6 percent of fuel. There is also a saving of 93 seconds of flying time and, converting those seconds of flying time into the equivalent amount of fuel, using the cost index as a conversion factor, the amount of fuel saved is 224.8 kilos: that’s the equivalent saving for this flight. The crew can inspect the printout at the very start to verify that the aircraft weight is correctly recorded and that the cost index also is correct. If either is not correct, they can send a message to change those parameters to the correct ones. The report format is in figure 12 and readers can see that it’s also very easy for the crew to send a short update to the ground whilst enroute. The print-outs are clear and self-explanatory with the wind speeds at each waypoint and optimum altitudes displayed in brackets for the wind altitude trade-offs.

Now, I’d like to tell you a little about the system through a case study that Norwegian did, comparing the fuel saved or fuel penalty switching from the Lido flight plan to the AVTECH system used in flight with the optimizer. The print-outs also list the most accurate descent winds for the descent and it was with those descent winds that Norwegian first started with the uptake trial. In that, the descent winds were used to make sure that they were the most accurate winds to position the top of descent, including the ISA (International Standard Atmosphere) deviation and the QNH (barometric pressure adjusted to sea level) forecasted. Then the ClearPath (flight profile optimizer) was included, with the step-climbs. Of course, it could be that the flight plan is already optimum in which case, the AVTECH read-out will just be a confirmation of that.

the total saving here would be the surface area of that graph which is what was also on figure 13.4. The monthly total fuel saving with the fleet was a total of 761 tonnes of cruise fuel saved between December and February as well as 2359 tons of CO2 emissions over the same period. This was fairly consistent from month to month.
SUMMARY
To sum up Norwegian’s experience with this fuel saving solution so far (figure 14) it was first very easy to get started. Norwegian was able to run the trial with very little effort.
Summary As a result, there was a very good average saving per flight. Savings were relatively consistent between the three months. In December the average saving was 23 kilos per flight with 24 kilos per flight in January and 22 in February. Translating these absolute values of fuel saved into percentage values, the average was roughly 1.6 percent on average cruise fuel saving per flight. That roughly 1.6 percent is the potential difference between flying to the operational flight plan with no corrections, and following the optimizer. Some flights have more savings than others so figure 13.3 is just a distribution with the savings.

As can be seen, most of the flights had small amounts of savings with, in the end, more and more savings with a longer frequency. There could be some flights at the very extreme ends that might have been a flight plan that was filed as very low due to air traffic restrictions and then the crew managed to climb higher. But

The system provides an optimum profile to minimize total cost, not necessarily just the fuel cost but, of course, the fuel cost is the main cost driver. As part of the trial, Norwegian ran a survey among the pilots to gauge their appreciation of the system — it would not have made sense had the pilots not supported it — and they were very happy with it. They could see, for example, that, if the descent forecast said that, at 24,000ft the wind will be 2.2 degrees and 71 knots, and the pilot descended to that level and could see that the actual wind was spot on or extremely close to the forecast, that impressed them and ensured their buy-in to the solution. The cruise saving potential, as we’ve already explained above, ran out at roughly 23 kilos or 1.4-1.6 percent fuel saving. Just in those three months, 761 tonnes of

Of course, that’s the potential between the standard flight plan and running the optimizer but it doesn’t mean that will be the saving on every flight: that would require everyone to always follow the recommendations to the letter. But there could be Air Traffic Control restrictions that mean a pilot cannot secure the ideal level; however, savings will be somewhere in that potential space between to flight plan and optimized profile which is still a good business case.

Dirk Leese explains how Logipad’s dedication to a flexible solution has driven a strong business that is able to react to user needs Dirk Leese has more than 15 years’ experience in the aviation industry. After his studies, which combined mechanical engineering and computer science, Dirk developed the Logipad software in 2002 as a developer. As an absolute Logipad expert, he not only knows the technical side but also looks at the processes from the user’s point of view. Aircraft IT: Your name, your job title and the name of the business? Dirk Leese: Dirk Leese, Manager Process Automation, Logipad provided by DextraData GmbH Aircraft IT: How did Logipad get started? DL: Initially, Logipad was developed at the request of a customer. In 2002, the former airline LTU commissioned us to develop a system to synchronize Computer Based Training (CBT) to laptop devices. We were asked to create a system with an automatic and manageable installation and synchronization process. Since then, Logipad has been further developed and improved.
Aircraft IT: What is the attraction of aircraft-related software? DL: Airline processes are subject to very high security standards, which are also important in the deployed software. The combination of high quality, security and compliance rules and the constant changes in IT technologies are the attraction of aircraft related software and a challenge that we can meet with Logipad. Another attraction of aircraft-related software is the requirement to bring together existing information from various systems — such as flight planning, weather information, maintenance — and to electronically map and automate the individual business processes of airlines.
Aircraft IT: What is the guiding business principle that drives Logipad? DL: Providing efficient process support: We love technology but our main focus is always the user’s point of view — for us it is important to understand the business of our customers and their requirements. Due to our agile approach, we are in regular dialogue with our customers during the implementation and beyond. Because our work does not end with the implementation, we accompany our customers, continuously ask for feedback and directly optimize our solution according to their individual requirements.

Aircraft IT: What has been Logipad’s greatest technical achievement to date, and why? DL: One of Logipad’s greatest technical achievements is probably its high flexibility and the bundling of numerous types of information in one interface with a very simple synchronization and comprehensive search function. Logipad’s high flexibility makes it possible to integrate into the solution necessary information and dashboards for management as well as for pilots and flight operations. Characteristic values, which we receive via the AID (Aircraft Interface Device), can be directly compared and evaluated with the planned figures. In addition, the form function allows us to

offer a wide range of applications for the crew (performance and training dashboard), ground staff and technical personnel. The Logipad is used in MRO to provide the legend of technical tools with the QR-Code function. Aircraft IT: What has been Logipad’s greatest business achievement to date, and why? DL: Today, Logipad has more than 10,000 users and a good three-digit number of aircraft are equipped with Logipad. We have achieved this primarily through process automation and optimization helping customers such as Virgin Atlantic and Ethiopian Airlines to improve their operational processes. It is crucial to us that Logipad fits into our customers’ existing processes and optimizes them, not the other way around. This way the customer does not have to implement completely new processes in order to use Logipad. Existing applications and tools can be connected to or integrated into Logipad. Thus, Logipad brings up to 80% time saving, resource savings and a significant cost advantage due to two key factors (1) no redesign of key processes is necessary and (2) training costs are significantly reduced. Aircraft IT: What have been Logipad’s disappointments and what have you learned from them? DL: We are currently seeing a situation where commercial travel is almost non-existent and EFB solutions are therefore currently not in full use in all areas. Nevertheless, there are many

In these areas, digitalization is more important than ever and will continue to gain in importance. This will certainly bring a digital boost. With Logipad, we already offer a paperless solution that integrates features such as e-signature and face-recognition and are happy that we can support our customers in digitizing their processes and business. Aircraft IT: In a sentence, how would you summarize what Logipad does for aviation customers? DL: Logipad is an EFB/EFF solution, which enables flight crews to perform flight management tasks more easily and efficiently with only one solution. It stores and retrieves data and documents and digitizes workflows and processes. Logipad is available as a cloud or an on-premise solution for iOS and Windows devices. Aircraft IT: What is new on Logipad’s development horizon? DL: Soon Logipad will be available as a multiplatform application besides the existing native application. The new multiplatform application is not only
able to run on iOS, Android and Windows devices, but also supports cross-operating system device-todevice communication and data exchange. Creating a consistent user experience for all platforms was important to us, so the look and feel is almost identical on all devices as well as in our Web Client. Integration to numerous other systems is also supported. In addition, we are working on a completely redesigned and redeveloped backend system based on the latest technology and frameworks. The focus is on security, modular micro services and a new workflow engine. Aircraft IT: What do you want your customers to say about Logipad? DL: A customer who uses Logipad not only benefits from the simplification of processes and the flexible adaptation to individual needs but also saves enormous costs compared to other solutions. I
n this article, we’re going to look at the digitization of EFB and flight operations manuals plus regulatory compliance. But before we get into those topics, let me introduce Edelweiss Air.
EDELWEISS AIR
Edelweiss (a member of the Lufthansa Group) operates 16 Airbus aircraft and serves over 70 destinations worldwide. We have about 300 pilots with 750 Cabin Crew, plus roughly 150 employees in the back office and administration. Looking at where we fly to (figure 1), the operation covers quite a large area. There are also a significant number of destinations throughout Europe, albeit not shown in the figure below.
THE CURRENT EFB SETUP
Looking at our present EFB setup, we use iPads as electronic flight bags with the following operational applications (figure 2).

We have all of the OEM software from Airbus and FS+ for performance and aircraft manuals. In the flight planning domain, we use Sabre eFM for charting material and both Lido/mPilot and Honeywell WIS for weather information. Meanwhile, reporting is managed via the IQSMS reporting system. However, most noteworthy for the topic at hand is that we use GoodReader to display manuals. These are also synchronized with the document module of mPilot, as we’ll discuss in more detail below. In figure 3 you can see an example of how we currently present documents to our pilots, namely via the Present setup Edelweiss Intranet that is based Static library of PDF documents: on a SharePoint site collection. As can be seen in figure 3, documents are presented to pilots via a static library of PDF documents. While SharePoint may be a good collaboration tool, it certainly isn’t for publishing documents that need to be managed rather rigidly. For example: SharePoint doesn’t devise a naming convention nor does it check whether a given file Figure 3 name adheres to a pre-defined set of rules. Thus, we have to manually implement our naming convention, which frequently leads to mistakes, mainly due to documents

being published by editors and publishers that don’t necessarily adhere to the agreed upon naming convention. In fact, we had to address this issue by providing additional training and reducing the overall number of administrators in order to stabilize our setup and to ensure that crews are able to locate the necessary information in a timely manner. When it comes to uploading files to our electronic flight bag (EFB), there are two ways in which Edelweiss has done this in the past (figure 4).

The second method syncs files from the Intranet to GoodReader. Unfortunately, we’ve also encountered some issues with that approach, since admins could alter documents on GoodReader and would then push them back into our SharePoint Library, thereby accidently changing files without adhering to our document revision processes. Speaking of revision and approval processes: These were available to us by means of paper-based Process Manuals, without a dedicated workflow tool at our disposal. To that end, change requests were usually sent to us either by email, by physically passing on a piece of paper, via the reporting system, and sometimes even orally over the counter. It goes without saying that this is not really a workflow that we can stick to and by no means a reliable alternative to a workflow-based IT system.
WHY CHANGE THE SYSTEM?

One way is for the documentation to be automatically synchronized with Lido/ mPilot via an API (Application Programming Interface). However, results are rather unreliable since, at times, SharePoint fails to execute the upload correctly.
We really want to get rid of the fixed file names for the sake of organizing files more reliably and to avoid editors publishing documentation that doesn’t adhere to our naming convention. At times, admins may have even put in a wrong file name altogether or uploaded a document in the wrong format (e.g. Word instead of a PDF). In short, there was room for improvement. We’d also prefer to avoid the extensive publisher training from the past and would instead rather prefer a system that carefully controls what and how content is published. As alluded to before, the process of syncing documentation to mPilot is not reliable and, on the GoodReader App, there is the potential issue of altering files by accident and pushing these changes back to the document library. Another issue that we face with GoodReader is that it doesn’t provide a full text search functionality, which surely would be advantageous to have. All things being considered, we certainly want to achieve reliable document synchronization to one single App in the future. Yet another priority is to limit the number of sources for revision inputs and to manage approval processes by means of document specific workflows.

REQUIREMENTS
Given all of the above, what are the requirements established for a new system at Edelweiss Air? We need the new system to include the following features (figure 5).

The new system needs to be capable of managing the entire documentation life cycle. Hence, from creating and publishing content, all the way to revising it based on document specific workflow and approval procedures. And although
we still want the possibility to publish to different file types (e.g. PDF), we want documents to be based on an XML based structure via an editor that allows users to specify documentary units (DUs) that can be easily controlled. Furthermore, the visible content of a given document should be limited to display only information that is actually relevant to someone’s particular role and that can be dynamically filtered even further based on document specific metatags. Document specific workflows must ensure that we can reflect our internal revision and approval procedures without compromise. Moreover, such workflows must allow for inclusion of the Civil Aviation Authorities (CAA) on a documentary unit level, thereby enabling the collaboration with our CAA and allowing it to review changes in a transparent and efficient manner. The system must further allow to limit access to information based on user permission (document access control) and also provide insights on who has read what and when. A seamless audit and revision trail must be available at all times, in order to accommodate for CAA and IOSA (IATA Operational Safety Audits) related audits, which will facilitate demonstrating how changes are managed and on what grounds changes were issued to begin with. Last but not least, we would also like for DUs to be directly linked to the corresponding regulation (e.g. IOSA) whenever that applies, and to receive automatic change requests whenever the official counterpart changes. YONDER MIND
After researching the market, we came to the conclusion that Yonder Mind is the content management solution (CMS) best suited to our needs. It includes an easy-to-use editor that allows for the creation of DUs or information modules, in Yonder speak. Information modules are discrete units of information that can be further refined by means of adding additional information to them. In that sense, a document is merely a collection of such information modules, which brings about many benefits: information can easily be copied (or referenced, in Yonder speak) between documents without physical duplication. Meaning that whenever the source module is being changed, it is automatically updated wherever it has been reused, thereby avoiding conflicting information and outdated duplicates that may otherwise be scattered across the documentation landscape. As briefly mentioned, a given module can also be enriched with metadata and tags, consequently enabling functionalities such as dynamic filter capabilities (e.g. limit visible content of a document for a particular role or topic) and linking modules to regulatory databases (e.g. IQSMS), to name but two examples. Now let’s take a brief look at Yonder Mind and how we will work with it in the future. Figure 6 shows an excerpt of Edelweiss Air’s Operation Manual — Part A (OM-A), including the custom role-based content view (the sidebar can be collapsed at any time of course). We defined some roles (figure 6) and filters (figure 7) to make it easier for crews to get straight to the information that they need. This custom role-based content
view will be pre-set by our active directory. For A320 pilots, there will be a mark both on the A320 and cockpit field, ensuring that they’ll see exactly what they need according to their function. Users are of course able to change these settings on the fly, should they like to display all of the content instead, for example. Meanwhile, figure 7 shows the filters that we’ve decided to use for the OM-A: ‘Best Practice’, ‘Policy’, ‘Procedure’, and ‘Winter Ops’.

Document Revisions
Each and every information module can be accessed by means of clicking on the corresponding chevron displayed on the right-hand side of a given module (see figure 6 and 7 for examples). By clicking on a chevron, users can pull up additional information about the module at hand. It’s also where qualified users can issue change requests (figure 8), namely by clicking on the ‘CHANGE REQUEST’ tab and choosing the appropriate option.
particular. What follows are the respective steps necessary to approve a given change. During each of the stages (‘Preconsultation’, ‘In Edit’, ‘Internal Approval’), there’s a defined set of stakeholders (or roles) that can jointly discuss the change in detail and one that can move the workflow along. During the ‘In Edit’ stage for example, it is the Editor that can trigger the action ‘Request Approval’ to progress to the ‘Internal Approval’ stage of the workflow. Since all of the discussions and decisions are made within the system, a seamless audit and revision trail is available at all times. Once the change is ‘Ready for Publish’, we can even specify which stakeholders shall be actively informed about it, thereby allowing us to selectively communicate changes based on someone’s particular role. Hence, instead of having to go through lengthy highlights of revisions, users get notified about only those changes that actually have an impact on their role and are Figure 9 therefore relevant to them. A given notification also includes instructions on whether the related information only has to be read or whether a given user group must actively acknowledge having done so. Consequently, the system is indeed capable of providing us with insights on who has read what and when. Figure 10 shows a generic example of a Yonder Mind Dashboard including two such change notifications in the ‘My Tasks’ section for a particular user, who may access the change details simply by clicking on the respective item.

Once a user has issued a change request, relevant stakeholders are automatically notified based on the document-specific approval and revision workflow. We decided that we will manage changes by having three available workflow options, depending on the scope of the change: • Editorial, which is used for change requests with no real impact (e.g. misspellings); • Minor Changes, for true content changes without concern to the Swiss CAA; and… • Major Changes, for changes that need to be approved by the Swiss CAA as well. Figure 9 shows an example of one of these workflows, namely the minor one. It’s important to understand that it is during the ‘In Analyze’ stage where the responsible person (Document Owner in this case) can classify the change request coming from a given user. Hence, this is where we decide whether to classify a change either as an editorial, minor, or major change. Depending on the classification, the workflow will branch out differently thereafter; in the case of figure 9, we get to see what that would look like for the minor workflow in

and revision procedures without constraints and ensures proper control over our entire documentation. Since everything in Yonder Mind is role-based, document access control is ensured by default, including the provision of insights on the read status of users for crucial information. Regulatory compliance is covered to our full satisfaction by linking content within our documentation directly to corresponding EASA and IOSA regulations, automatically triggering a workflow for the information module whenever the official counterpart changes. Lastly, a seamless audit and revision trail is available at all times, since Yonder Mind is set up to manage the entire document management life cycle without exception. With that being said, it is safe to say that Edelweiss Air’s transition from static documentation to dynamic content management has been a true success for all stakeholders involved.

Bruno Speck has 30 years’ experience in the industry, starting as a Swiss Air Force pilot before transitioning to Swissair as a commander on the A320 and A330. Today he is a Captain and Type Rating Instructor on the A320. With a BA in law from the University of Zurich, Bruno flies fighter jets as a reserve officer. Edelweiss Air is a Swiss leisure airline and the sister company of Swiss International Air Lines. It operates flights to European and intercontinental destinations from its base at Zurich Airport. The long-haul fleet consists of four Airbus A340-313 and two Airbus A330-300, while ten Airbus A320s serve shortand medium-haul routes. When necessary, the fleet is extended by SWISS aircraft types with a SWISS crew.

The beauty of this is that, whenever an EASA or IOSA standard linked to an information module changes, Yonder Mind automatically generates a workflow for Edelweiss, prompting us to have a look at the regulatory change and to decide thereafter whether we need to amend the content of the information module to reflect the new reality and remain compliant. So, looking again at the requirements formulated at the beginning (figure 5), let’s see if we actually have met them. We wanted one publishing system for all documents which we have achieved. The year 2020 was an exceptionally difficult time for all airlines and aviation companies. The circumstances caused by COVID-19 required an even more efficient approach to cost management, and initiatives to identify potential areas for cost reduction became crucial. Despite the unfavourable conditions, Wizz Air kept on investing heavily in growth, and one of its strategic decisions was to select a global Weight & Balance software partner with the aim to reduce costs, improve safety and increase flight punctuality. The partner selected was Evionica but, first and for some context, a few words
about the two businesses involved in this partnership.
ABOUT WIZZ AIR
Wizz Air, Europe’s fastest growing and greenest airline, offers passenger flights to over 170 Destinations in 47 countries. It operates a modern fleet of 135 Airbus A320-family aircraft with an average age of five years. Wizz Air is constantly looking to expand its network of routes and make air transport more accessible including, this year, commencing operations at its new base in Abu Dhabi, the capital city of the United Arab Emirates. Delivering intelligent solutions to improve the operations of companies in the aviation industry, Evionica offers software for Weight & Balance calculations, as well as a range of systems to enhance the pilot training process. Services are provided on all continents for clients such as Wizz Air, Lufthansa Aviation Training, LOT Polish Airlines and Gulf Aviation Academy.
OBJECTIVES
As with any initiative of this nature, the first task was to define what the user, in this case Wizz Air, wanted to get out of the program; the objectives.
Cost reduction
For Wizz Air, offering flights to more than 170 destinations and managing more than 30 Departure Control Systems (DCS), including Weight & Balance systems, had become a challenge. Not only does it require taking responsibility for the compliance of 30 different suppliers, but it also means paying for a range of services provided by the ground operation agent. Weight & Balance software cost can be included in the fee for the entire handling service or listed as an additional system fee. In short, Wizz Air was in need of a cost-effective tool for Weight & Balance control, and, after a careful selection process, Evionica was considered to be the

best possible partner. So, the airline decided to implement, Evionica’s Weight & Balance software together with Navitaire DCS Go Now. Not only were internal compliance costs immediately reduced by EUR 30,000 per annum, but also the business analysis showed that using Weight & Balance software from Evionica saved Wizz Air more than EUR 400,000 per annum.

Improve Safety
Ground Operations Managers report that the system is very intuitive, needing just 60 seconds to create the load sheet and a few minutes to deliver it to the crew. The Load Controllers and Load Masters are very happy with the software.
Manual load sheets, software complexity, staff changes and, most importantly, human errors, all affect the Weight & Balance process. There are many entities involved in the operation, including the refuelling agent who refuels the aircraft based on the airline’s fuel order.

Filling in manual load sheets is exceptionally time-consuming and, in the case of last-minute changes (LMCs), it can result in flight delays. The user-friendly

The entire implementation process was performed remotely, including training and setup. A total of 63 training sessions were conducted over a month, giving Wizz Air complete flexibility. A low staff training time of just 90 minutes and fully remote examination and certification considerably increased ground operations efficiency.
Ideal Trim / Fuel Efficiency
Fuel consumption is one of the biggest cost-related parameters for any airline. With a centralised system, it is possible to monitor, for example, the ideal trim for a specific route or aircraft and apply corrective actions with a specific ground operations agent.

Load sheets can be distributed via email automatically through the system in txt/PDF format or printed directly at the ground operations agent office. In order to ensure a digital and fully automated workflow, Evionica will integrate with Wizz Air’s selected EFB provider. This will enable the load sheet to be distributed directly to the crew in the cockpit of the aircraft. For the load sheet to be sent through ACARS, Evionica can also integrate with a customer’s supplier’s system.

t’s no surprise that everyone in the aviation industry, including its leaders, are focused on what the sector might look like after COVID but so far not much in the way of concrete activity is going on to make things happen. There are many opinions, leaflets and new manuals in circulation but unfortunately, not much real planning or execution in the overabundance of ‘good ideas’ that are not much more than exercises in managing perception. In this article, we consider two possible options for which way the industry might go. In one, the sector looks backwards to its past, where things weren’t actually as rosy as we want to remember them to be, and severe inefficiencies were a handbrake on the industry. The other is to look forward, and for the industry to grasp the opportunities that it has been handed by the pandemic because the rear-view mirror won’t return us to an industry looking the same as it was. This article is intended to challenge thinking and hopefully generate some action and is co-authored by Marcus Carr, Closed Loop’s Director of Projects and Data Science and Captain Martin Mitev, Aviation Futurist well known for his challenging perspective on the aviation industry. Marcus is known to readers for his work with the military and pharmaceutical industries, and our work with customers. Martin is well-known through his regular LinkedIn posts and webinar appearances. Together, we’ll delve into why the industry focuses on 2019 as the bellwether to the industry’s exit from COVID. Is it because 2019 was known to us? Something with which we were comfortable, and which was working for us? It turns out 2019 wasn’t a great year for the industry, and some long-term issues were emerging that had been ignored for a while. The article will include abstractions because abstraction allows everyone to fill in the gaps with their own reality. We’ll propose a framework for something different — working together to design a new vision for the industry. Together, we’ll confront the status quo.
NOVEMBER 2019 AND SINCE
It wasn’t long ago that some of us were worried about the explosive growth of the industry. While most applauded it, it was running into problems (figure 1). It had been for a while, but few had noticed.

The aviation industry was becoming a victim of its own success. Scarcity was creeping into our lexicon, but not many seemed to understand its looming consequence. It took the industry 71 years to carry 10 billion passengers but, by the end of 2019, it looked as if the next ten billion would be reached in less than a quarter of that time. 8 billion annual passengers and a near doubling of flights in most markets were being forecast for the early 2030s. But there was an omen in all of that good news: the success required an urgent solution to the ballooning, multi-billion-dollar cost of system delays, the unintended consequences of success. Everyone looked at the growth as something to be celebrated, and new players continue to attempt to get a piece of it, but how did that end up? Others worried about where the industry was going to put all the people and all the airplanes. The ideal solution has been conceptually designed, but it means working together on the outcome, something the industry had tried before in numerous committees that take decades to get their work done, some more successfully than others. Trajectory Based Operations (TBO) (figure 2) will test everybody but not Figure 2 because it’s technologically

challenging. Instead, it requires modernization of thinking, co-ordination, sharing information about operations, schedules, flight plans, with everyone. It means integrating every aspect of the passenger journey with the airline operation, and it will mean streamlining every element of the operational landscape — data, process, people and technology. This topic was recently covered in a two-part article in Aircraft IT (issues 9.2 and 9.3 in 2020), in the context of whether the airlines are ready for it. The piece concluded that the gap in capability required to make it work was in the realm of science fiction—but not for the reasons you might think. The article proposed that for the solution to work, we need to break industry and airline silos down and start coordinating and collaborating with partners, suppliers, competitors… everyone, to keep stuff moving as efficiently as possible. Furthermore, we said there’s no choice; things will have to be different. Have a look at the last paragraph in the article and decide for yourself: science fiction? Except that it’s not. Words meant to drive action for a different era, but seemingly just as appropriate now. Here’s why.

Have a look at Figure 3. The first quote is a no-brainer: Everybody is saying it, including us; but it’s what everybody is doing about it that needs some examination, particularly when it’s followed by the inference in the second quote. “...in times of crisis leaders come together, put aside their differences and work cooperatively.” How are we going with that? The comments that follow come from aviation industry leaders; what do they say about the industry’s cohesion as we move through the COVID crisis? There’s an abundance of ‘thought bubbles’ from the likes of ICAO and IATA

But it seems that everyone, governments, airlines, States and even global airline bodies are doing their own thing instead of developing that comprehensive and holistic solution we keep reading about. Where is the coordinated approach? Quotes four and five in figure 3 are telling; is anything changing? We keep hearing about what’s needed to facilitate the recovery, but the implementation details remain conspicuously absent. IATA is working hard but seems to have missed the flight on its travel pass with governments and individual airlines developing their own systems. How is that all going to come together, particularly for international travel? Is it just an issue that the industry can’t seem to come together, even in a crisis; is it leadership; or is it more fundamental? Last year, Europe tried to fix COVID travel by itself and Australia, like others, was negotiating travel bubbles, both ostensibly ignoring ICAO’s proclamations about a harmonised re-start. What does a coordinated re-start look like anyway?
MARTIN MITEV: A COORDINATED RE-START
At an online IATA event last year, I was reminded how, more than ever, the industry needs what it is actually good at — communication. The significant business perturbations that COVID has required of us have generally stressed just that — coordinated action through that communication. However, what has bothered me since March 2020 is, what we are going to talk about when the next crisis hits us? Assuming everybody agrees that the industry is indeed cyclical, we should expect to see the next ‘crisis’ eight to twelve years from now. When I look back, I see that after 2010/2011 and the GFC, we did what we had done after 2001 which was, basically, to try to grow as much as we can, as fast as we can and then we ended up in… what looks like the same place. In other words, nothing changed. So that is the place that Michael has been referring to above. In light of that, my question is, in 2029, will it be déjà vu? Will we be sitting around virtual meeting spaces or even real ones with somebody asking, ‘You remember that event we had in 2020, from which the outcome could have been one from a myriad of possibilities, but we ended up in the same place?’

There are several messages from the past that could help us in our search for the future. “Never let a crisis go to waste.” — Winston Churchill c1940. “In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.” — Albert Einstein. If so, what are those opportunities for the airline industry amid COVID and beyond? Can the airline sector collectively take advantage of the once-in-a-lifetime event, or will historical fragmentation, silos and irrational market behavior keep it stuck in its present or, worse, back in its past? Let’s examine 2019, where everyone, it seems, wants to be (figure 4).

IATA Economics tell us the airline industry made a profit of about $26 billion in 2019. That ‘great’ profit represents a paltry average margin of about three per cent of revenue, globally. For the year, the margin over the cost-of-capital was less than one per cent. Significantly, only 30 per cent of the world’s airlines contributed to these results; the rest, almost three-quarters of the industry, were in various stages of distress; again, according to IATA economics. Our exploding growth has generated massive capacity and delay costs — the costs of scarcity. Yields have declined, profits have sagged the industry has been unable to achieve its cost-of-capital for most of the past two decades. It seems reasonable to ask then, why are we in such a hurry to go back there, and why are we so resistant to changing the model? Marcus and Martin discuss the conundrum. Through parable and simile, Marcus and Martin imply that our industry is often caught in a doom loop of its own making. Although COVID was unleashed upon us through no fault of our own, we wonder if the industry’s collective approach to doing the same thing over and over, but expecting different outcomes, is the best

WHY GO BACK TO FAILURE?
Marcus Carr: I think that the analogy is that when you’re lost and don’t know how to get out of a situation, like being lost in the jungle, you tend to just keep following the same path: you have no reason to think that things are going to come out any better by following that path, but humans are optimistic creatures, so we tend to just put trust in the fact that it’s all going to be OK. The problem is that by the time we realise that it’s not OK and we get to the hard part of the jungle, it becomes clear that we should have turned back long ago, or deviated from our course. But we had nothing to tell us to do that and human nature is just to blindly keep plodding on. Our industry is suffering from the same thing: nobody really knows what a change to the industry would look like, or what sorts of things it would produce. So, the tendency is just to try to get back to what we knew, where we were in 2019. It’s the same as following a blind path because we have no idea or become unwilling to see what’s in front of us and backwards always seems simpler. Unfortunately, history would suggest that’s not going to be a very productive approach. Martin Mitev: The current state of things, as I’ve observed for a couple of years, reminds me about the ‘Allegory of the Cave’, which was first penned about four thousand years ago by Plato. It tells of a group of people chained inside a large cave, only able to face the inner wall. A fire burns behind them, throwing shadows from what passes on the wall. As far as the people are concerned, the two-dimensional shadows represent their reality. But even a child would tell you that’s not an accurate representation of the real world. In our context here, Plato’s story illustrates the inward thinking of airlines. Aviation sector thinking tends to fixate on how we’re doing things now as the only way to do them. However, if allowing ourselves to experiment lets us, figuratively, get up and turn around to see that the real world is full of colour and three-dimensional objects. The back wall of the cave, our constant internal reflection is a mirage that limits us. To move on, the industry and its airlines have to consider whether how they are doing stuff is the optimal way of doing it. To use a cliché, we have to challenge our thinking and see whether a different way is possible. COVID has forced the industry to examine its worldview. It’s time to get up, turn around and build the new one. way to rebuild? Or is it time to reexamine the inward focus, look up from the inside wall, turn around and consider a really different path? In the second part of this article, we’ll look to the future and air some creative ideas about how it could be different and better than what we’ve allowed ourselves to accept in the past.
