T

o say Happy New Year in March seems odd but this is the first issue of Aircraft IT Operations for 2018. And don’t imagine that we’ve been taking it easy for the past couple of months: far from it. Now in our seventh year of publication, we’re immensely proud and pleased at the way in which Aircraft IT has grown both in the number of vendors associated with and contributing to the publication, and in its standing as the go-to resource for airlines’ and operators’ Operations departments, keeping up with the latest developments in and researching the aviation Operations IT market. But, not to rest on our laurels, we wanted to make Aircraft IT Operations eJournal even more useful for users and readers. So we’ve revamped the publication with a fresh new look, making it clearer to view on tablets and mobile phones as well on the traditional laptop and desk PC screens. In short, you’ll be able to more easily read your latest edition of Aircraft IT Operations wherever you are and on whatever device you have. However, one thing that won’t change is what we deliver. That will continue to be real Case Studies from other professionals doing similar jobs to those of readers in similar working environments where they have faced and successfully addressed similar challenges. And there will still be White Papers

offering the latest thoughts in the sector from the people who are doing the thinking. This issue includes how SmartLynx Airlines has upgraded their iPad EFB to fulfil a range of Operations’ needs and calculations that can be used by flight crew throughout the whole flight. Then we have another case study from Lufthansa CityLine on their new electronic Technical Log Book (ETL/ELB) and how they have applied its capabilities to improve their operations in a range of areas such as environmental performance. And the final case study in this issue looks at the experience of Pegasus Airlines deciding to build its own fully connected and mobile EFB solution on an existing and reliable hardware platform. Still looking at EFBs, our column in this issue considers the pros and cons of different device mounting solutions plus we also have the regular round-up of news and technology developments, a feature where our new look will make it easier to navigate the plethora of material available. Add to that, useful features such as `Upload Tender’ and `Operations Software Directory’, and you have Aircraft IT Operations: professional experience adding to your knowledge. Ed Haskey

The SA Group was proud to announce at the start of November 2017 that Enter Air had selected the SA EFB solution for their Boeing 737 fleet. The selected solution consists of two mounted ruggedized 10.1” Panasonic FZ-G1 tablets, and the SA Control Panel for tablet power and Ethernet. EASA and FAA Certification of the full solution is provided and installation was in progress at the time of writing. Based on the EASA Part-21J and Part-21G privileges, The SA Group can design, manufacture and certify tailored EFB products in house. These added values, limit risk exposure and increase predictability for customer projects. This is in line with the philosophy of the SA Group to provide Turn-Key projects to its valued customers. The solution provided to Enter Air follows the industry path to introduce COTS tablets in the cockpit while leaning on avionics components for functions to reside in the aircraft for many years. USAF Selects UTC Aerospace Systems DB-110 Airborne Reconnaissance System for Multi-Nation Foreign Military Sales Acquisition UTC Aerospace Systems announced in late February 2018 that it has been awarded an indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) contract with an initial ceiling of $22.9 million from the U.S. Air Force (USAF) for the DB-110 Airborne Reconnaissance System. The acquisition supports requests for the DB-110 system from multiple countries via the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program. As the single largest acquisition of DB-110 pods ever procured through FMS, it highlights the growing need for advanced intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities among U.S. allies worldwide. The DB-110 is a dual-band 110-inch focal length reconnaissance system that is capable of producing high-resolution imagery from nadir to a stand-off range of 80-plus nautical miles, day or night. Developed as a derivative of the strategic Senior Year Electro-optical Reconnaissance System (SYERS) sensor on the USAF U-2, the DB-110 can collect more than 10,000 square miles of high-resolution imagery per hour and serves as the cornerstone of many air forces’ tactical and strategic ISR capabilities. It is currently in service with 14 nations on multiple platforms. In addition to operations on the F-16 and F-15, the DB-110 is operational on special mission aircraft like the Bombardier Global Express and maritime patrol aircraft like the P-3, and was recently demonstrated on the MQ-9 Reaper In addition to procurement of the DB-110 pods, the USAF IDIQ also includes multiple UTC Aerospace Systems Ground Exploitation Stations. These systems are deployed worldwide with U.S. and allied countries to enable the ingest, exploitation, archival and dissemination of intelligence products from not only the DB-110, but also Full Motion Video (FMV) gimbals and Non-Traditional ISR (NTISR) targeting pods. Operating as nodes within a larger network, the ground stations provide a repository for multiple intelligence products and a platform to discover and share information between broad tiers of end users. AVTECH starts SIGMA service and launches Aventus SIGMA severe weather service AVTECH Sweden AB starts SIGMA service delivery to BRA-Braathens Regional

BRA-Braathens Regional Airlines, Sweden’s largest regional airline operator, announced in midNovember 2017 that it has chosen AVTECH as partner for its ongoing evaluation of systems that improve information given to pilots on turbulence and other weather phenomena that may affect a flight. AVTECH has a unique capacity to process and deliver weather information disseminated from the most advanced forecasts, directly to pilots and airlines. The forecasts, based on the high-resolution meteorological models produced by Met Office (UK), allow the Aventus SIGMA service to inform pilots in detail of areas of turbulence, ice formation, volcanic ashes, etc. Such information is an essential

tool when pilots need to navigate around areas containing weather phenomena that may affect safety of a flight. After a period of intense and partly complex development work together with BRABraathens Regional Airlines, AVTECH has now started delivering the service to BRA´s pilots

AVTECH Sweden AB recently announced the launch of its Aventus SIGMA severe weather service.

Moving to early February 2018, AVTECH Sweden AB recently announced the launch of its Aventus SIGMA severe weather service. First to use the service are BRA-Braathens Regional Airlines and Norwegian Air Shuttle. The service is available for all types of operators, regardless of their communication solution.

“We can keep flight crews informed of any severe weather expected on their flight regardless of what communication solution an airline has decided on. It can be infused in the pre-flight briefing package, sent via ACARS or be presented in our iOS table APP”, said Soren Skog, Marketing Director at AVTECH. Read the full story on Aircraft IT Website More than 300 passengers and crew were injured in incidents related to turbulence last year, and with global warming the number of turbulence encounters is expected to rise. By processing Met Office’s global High-Resolution model, making it easily available on Flight Deck, AVTECH believes pilots can make better decisions to maintain safety and improve passenger comfort.

Eagle Cap Software triples headcount in 2017 and adds two airline clients At the end of 2017, Eagle Cap completed their third full year of operations tripling headcount to 32 teammates. They also added two airline clients, including Allegiant Airlines, completed projects for AOPA and a UAV GCS system, and signed partnerships with M&E software provider Rusada and the GE Predix platform. In the past three years, Eagle Cap has served seven clients establishing itself as The Flight Operations Development Studio for the aviation industry. Also in 2017, Eagle Cap continued to invest profits back into the company and is building cool new products for the aviation industry. The company planned to have Aviation Charting Service (ACS) launched in 2017, but due to a change in mapping engine for the mobile version, experienced a delay. ACS allows

application developers, wanting to add an aeronautical chart display (based on ARINC 424 data) to any map. The year was a success with a launch customer committing to integrate ACS into their app. Eagle Cap has been working closely with them to refine ACS, and their requirements have led to the development of another product, Data Download Service (DDS). DDS allows an organization to manage, deliver, and update any type of data or files to a mobile application. ACS and DDS will both be deployed by the beginning of this summer. Furthermore, Eagle Cap established two partnerships in 2017 to develop a new practice area in the growing Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul market. The first is as a Rusada Envision nGen integration partner. Envision nGen is an aviation Maintenance & Engineering technology platform. In the Americas, Eagle Cap is their go-to source for integration and custom software development services when an operator needs a system implemented. The second partnership is with GE as a Digital Alliance Program partner focused on Predix, the platform for the Industrial Internet of Things. As a Digital Alliance Partner, Eagle Cap can build and customize applications to maximize the data analytics and operations optimization of the platform. skybook will help deliver change

In early December 2017, Bytron set out the five key principles around which skybook has been engineered to meet the needs of the airline industry and operators. The five principles are: Integration — seamless integration with other operating systems ensures core data from multiple sources is made available within the skybook Dispatch Portal, a single intuitive and user-friendly suite. How much time alone will be saved by not having to trawl multiple systems for important flight information and data.

Accessibility — skybook can be securely accessed from any internet enabled device, regardless of where a user may be at the time, helping improve two way information sharing between Ops, Dispatch and the cockpit, even when the flight is airborne. Flexibility — modular and flexible by design, skybook is tailored to the requirements of each operator and can be implemented in phases to minimise the disruption to flight dispatch when switching across to an all new system. This also helps ensure skybook can grow and change in line with the needs of each operator as further modules can be added at any time. Automation — Improve accuracy and remove repetition with skybook’s seamless data feeds that ingest, review, convert, decode and highlight the very latest data, via a series of direct feeds from the most trusted providers including NOAA, UK MET Office, EURO CONTROL and NAVBLUE.

Inclusivity — skybook works closely with clients to further develop skybook in line with their needs and the needs of the industry. And they don’t keep this to themselves, as all new skybook updates are shared with clients who can simply decide if the functionality is to be turned on or not. skybook CTA — more than just an EFF

In mid-January 2018, Bytron reminded us that Electronic Flight Bags are nothing new, in fact they had launched their first version back in 2007 which, looking back, seems like a whole different era. Now, Bytron’s Companion Tablet App has been born out of both industry needs and the needs of users, taking the award winning skybook technology and class leading data feeds and creating an intuitive,

user friendly, multi-functional application that is a true companion for aircrews. The app has been engineered to deliver a user experience that is second to none, giving flight crews mobile access to skybook’s comprehensive digital briefing packs, class leading charts, unique airfield situational awareness and more. It’s not all one-way traffic either as the app also features a Journey Logging module that allows crews to record actual data during each phase of a flight, providing an accurate insight into costs incurred, delays experienced, inflight incidents and most importantly the ability to record data against each waypoint to create a comparison showing how the flight performed against the flight plan. The app takes the skybook offering to the next level. It is modular and versatile offering a range of solutions that can help to modernise flight dispatch, crew briefing and airfield monitoring. Bluebox builds customer base and launches first IFE Platform for passengers with sight loss Bluebox and Virgin Atlantic launch first fleet-wide accessible IFE Platform for passengers with sight loss Bluebox Aviation Systems Ltd. has launched an accessible IFE (aIFE™) platform which took to the air with Virgin Atlantic on 1 December 2017, entertaining passengers with visual impairments aboard flights serving destinations across North America, the Caribbean, Africa, China, India and the Middle East. This makes Virgin Atlantic the first global airline to make IFE accessible for passengers with sight loss across its entire fleet. Bluebox worked closely with long-standing customer Virgin Atlantic and representatives from The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association (Guide Dogs) in the development of the platform to ensure that both

the airline’s and users’ needs were met. Through Virgin Atlantic’s relationship with the charity, Bluebox was introduced to a group of individuals with a range of visual impairments and who worked closely with Virgin Atlantic and Bluebox providing input and feedback through the development process. At the end of the development, one user commented that what they liked most about the platform was: “First, that you asked us for feedback, and second, that you updated it based on our recommendations — you really listened to us.” “We distilled the most critical elements of our Bluebox Ai IFE platform into a simple design that someone with sight loss can easily and consistently navigate, enriching this with additional background

functionality,” said James Macrae, CTO, Bluebox Aviation Systems Ltd. and contributor to the IFE Accessibility Working Group (ACCESSWG) of the Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX). “For example, rather than using a traditional screen reader function to read out on-screen text, information like film synopses are read out after a single tap of the film title. By putting these in the background, we kept the interface uncluttered and simple to navigate, but still providing information to help the passenger choose their selection.” Controls and menus are easy to detect and navigate for different types of sight loss and there is support for multiple languages, closed captions, and audiodescribed content. Solaseed Air Inc., a leading Japanese regional carrier, has deployed Bluebox Aviation Systems’ portable wireless IFE system — Bluebox Wow — across its fleet of Boeing 737-800s. Operating from Tokyo’s Haneda airport and across Japan, Solaseed Air operates a fleet of 12 Boeing 737-800s, all of which are flying with Bluebox Wow. “We’re honoured that Solaseed Air has selected Bluebox Aviation Systems as a partner in the development of their new IFE service,” said Kevin Clark, Chief Executive Officer, Bluebox Aviation Systems Ltd. at the end of November 2017 announcement. “IFE is evolving rapidly — no longer is it just a service to entertain passengers, but a channel for revenue generation, an important factor for any regional or low-cost carriers, which have not traditionally offered IFE.” Bluebox Wow provides wireless content streamed to passenger devices in any aircraft cabin, offering up

to 1.6TB of content including film, TV, audio, games and other digital media. The system is designed to support advertising, inflight shopping, and payment processing options, which make it an ideal platform for generating ancillary revenue, whether the IFE service itself is offered as a free or charged service. With a remarkably low cost of ownership, Bluebox Wow is a discrete, portable, lunchbox-sized unit. Stowed in overhead lockers, each box’s single swappable and rechargeable battery offers 15 hours of streamed content to 50 passengers. Read the full story on Aircraft IT Website

n this article, we’re will look at one of the key topics of the day, connected systems. We’ll do this by sharing SmartLynx’s experience connecting all of their systems through their EFB solution. But before that, some background information on SmartLynx to set the scene.

SMARTLYNX

As at the time of writing, SmartLynx’s fleet included 13 aircraft on two AOCs (Air Operator’s Certificates) in Latvia and in Estonia. The Latvia fleet has 7 A320 and 1 A321 aircraft with a further 5 A320s based in Estonia. The Latvian fleet obtained EFB (Electronic Flight Bag) approval in September 2014 and ETL (Electronic Tech Log) approval in August 2017 while, in Estonia, the EFB approval came in January 2015 and the ETL was also approved in August 2017. The

two parts of the airline operate together for training, including training pilots on the A320. Three further aircraft will be added to the fleet during 2018, bringing it up to 16. SmartLynx is an ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance and Insurance) service provider with an impressive customer community. The operation complies with EASA AIR-OPS-1 and IOSA (IATA Operational Safety Audit) as well as being EASA Part 145 approved. Competences include ad hoc wet lease, long-term wet lease and full charter operations. SmartLynx offers Cabin Crew conversion training, can issue CC (Cabin Crew) attestation and holds dangerous goods, low visibility on take-off and CAT2, CAT3A landing approvals. It also flies an extensive route system on its own account (own flight numbers) as the map (figure 1) illustrates and if all the flights undertaken for other airlines are included, it can be seen in figure 2 that SmartLynx aircraft and crew fly over most of Europe and some of the Middle East plus a Vietnam operations not on this map.

International Flight Support, the main subject for this article. The Airline Management System is Aviolinx RAIDO while Air Support PPS is the Flight Planning System, Navblue monitors performance and charts are Jeppesen Jepp FD-Pro. HubMobile supports the Document Library and Conduce eTechlog8 is the electronic techlog (ETL). The maintenance system is Commsoft OASES, MINT is the Training management system and AeroCloud is used for cosmic radiation calculations.

As an integrator, IFS with its Paperless Flight Bag™ does not provide any of the back-end system services but imports and integrates all data from/ between partner systems and fills it into the work flow on the EFB. Looking at the solution implemented at SmartLynx, the information is pushed to the pilot’s iPad through the interface that feeds the systems with data from IFS. From there, the Jeppesen Charts system auto-loads departure, destination and alternate airports, and plots a route using the EFB; this is a feature that pilots particularly like. Also, Navblue works as the online performance calculator. The maintenance Control System is OASES which also has online access to open MEL (Minimum Equipment List) items. Crew information and General Declaration The interface is used to feed flight deck crew information from RAIDO to PPS Flight Log, including

Pilot in Command (PIC), First Officer (FO) and Additional Crew Member (ACM). It‘s managed through the Ops system where crew planning is undertaken. The PFB™ EFB matches the flight with data from the Ops system to check if there is a match with crew information (the crew is already shown on the EFB). That is useful for the pilot because he’ll see the crew’s full names with their three letter codes. This connection led to another because, with a full name and a three letter code, a connection can be made to create a General Declaration (GenDec). The standard procedure is for the crewing department to create a GenDec and send it somewhere to be printed but once in a while, you end up in a place, especially in an operation like SmartLynx, where there is a GenDec missing. So SmartLynx had IFS build them a button for ‘GenDec’ which, when pushed, will AIRCRAFT IT Operations • MARCH-APRIL 2018 • 31

pre-populate the General Declaration form, connect to the Ops system, grab the data (name, date of birth, passport number…) from all crew members available in the crewing department and put that information on the GenDec form so that the pilot can send to wherever is convenient to have it printed; it’s a nice back-up procedure.

Load Sheet On all flights, the load sheet is prepared by the pilot; it’s not connected to DCS (Data Coding Scheme) systems in the airport because SmartLynx flies for so many customers that it’s never worth the effort to set the uplink to a DCS system. The pilot creates the load sheet on the EFB which is fully OFF-line capable and which takes 25-30 seconds. He signs it and the load sheet goes to a pre-defined list in the back-Office so, when they’re departing from one

CASE STUDY: SMARTLYNX

“The pilot creates the load sheet on the EFB which is fully OFF-line capable and which takes 25-30 seconds. He signs it and the load sheet goes to a pre-defined list in the back-Office so, when they’re departing from one place, it is sent to wherever the customer wants…” place, it is sent to wherever the customer wants in a really easy process. But then we got a requirement from one customer that they wanted to have a type B message sent to their Ops system because their Ops system wasn’t reading the email or the copy of the load sheet itself and they, of course, wanted the numbers into their Ops system. So SmartLynx asked IFS to add the LDM (Load Distribution Message) format to the bottom of the load sheet itself but then had to work out how it could be taken from there and displayed as a type B message. The way this was resolved, SmartLynx asked IFS to pull the load message itself after it has been signed by the pilot and drop it into the airline’s database. Once there, it is processed using a Pentaho transformation engine to a Connector+ from ARINC that can send type B messages; so the load sheet is dropped into the Connector+ Outbox where there is the opportunity to define a call sign and destination. It works well and, at SmartLynx, everything concerning the load sheet is done on the iPad. The pilot completes the load sheet, signs it, a copy is sent to the handling agent and a type B message is sent to whoever wants to receive it. In the final step for the load sheet, the process has to copy generated LDM

files for ARINC using the eHub Connector+ from ARINC. From there, it is an automatic process using whatever settings have been loaded to the system.

post-flight report is signed, everybody gets a copy of everything.

Back end portal

SmartLynx grabs any digital data that can be taken and processed into information. For instance, navigation fees are calculated by the flight planning system, PPS from Air Support, which used to generate a printed report that the airline has used to challenge the navigation fee invoices from Eurocontrol. Now, finalizing the step, we are in a preparation process that will enable information to be automatically sent from PPS to the EFB, processed to SharePoint from where it goes directly to AX/Axapta to challenge invoices and into the Ops system where it will be used to forecast estimated navigation costs. With post flight data, the data goes from the EFB server into RAIDO which is then locked for editing. SmartLynx considers the data as defined by the pilot to be the Master Data: as soon as he has signed it, it will go into the Ops systems and is locked so that all the duty times (figure 7) calculations become the actual data. Also available is the load information, fuel (figure 8), and take-off and landing pilots, to ensure that pilots complete their required number of take-offs and landings and to help manage pilot rotations.

The back-end portal in the IFS solution is also its strength. The focus is usually on what the pilot is doing from the Ops side and, from the company side, users are very interested to use the data that comes after a flight has completed. So, again SmartLynx approached IFS to make it easier to process the data. Now, there is an excellent back-end portal with all the data from which a user can select what they want, download it as a CSV file and then process it. SmartLynx is currently working with IFS to develop a report generator so the back-end portal digital data can be analyzed to detect areas on which the airline can take action and improve processes. The report generator lets the system administrator create any rule using digital data from the portal. Also, warnings and notifications can be emailed based on the rule: if someone is overtankering, putting on too much fuel, they can be notified; equally, if the landing/arrival fuel is less than it should be, an email to that effect can be sent to the dispatcher and to the civil aviation authority (mandatory) so that someone can check why that has happened. The important thing is that the tool allows users to take immediate action.

Digital data

Post-flight report When the post-flight report has been signed, data from the flight is made available on the back-end portal. SmartLynx then sends the post-flight report to the customer with a full Journey Log, a copy of the load sheet and a picture of the fuel slip. Before this all became operational, emails were used for this job, copying in a lot of people which led to emails bouncing back and forth trying to find one fuel slip. Now that doesn’t happen because as soon as the AIRCRAFT IT Operations • MARCH-APRIL 2018 • 32

eTechlog8 The eTechlog8 from Conduce is the latest approval for SmartLynx: the goal is for SmartLynx to only have a single entry of data for the pilot to minimize the risk of typing mistakes. When the flight is completed and the post-flight report has been signed on the pilot’s PFB™ EFB, there is an interface from the EFB to the Conduce server so that, when the post flight report has been signed, the pilot will be able to refresh the eTechlog and pre-populate all the data that has been generated from the flight into the eTechlog.

OTHER SYSTEMS

In addition to the above, SmartLynx uses several other systems, all referred to above, including Aviolinx RAIDO, Airline Management System, Air Support PPS Flight Planning System, MINT Training management System and Aerocloud for Cosmic Radiation reporting. The interface from RAIDO to PPS flight planning deals with the problem of flight call-sign similarities among aircraft operating in the same area on the same ATO (Air Traffic Organization) frequency giving rise to potential and actual flight safety

“… there is an interface from Aerocloud to RAIDO that will predict the cosmic radiation dose for every flight. When the measured value is available postflight, the file is updated with that actual dose. Crew members have access to these figures through their crew portal…” incidents; the danger of an aircraft taking and acting on a clearance intended for another due to call sign confusion is a common occurrence. So SmartLynx has its flight numbers fed into the flight planning system and linked to the appropriate call signs and the process is reversed in the Ops system where a call sign list is linked to the appropriate flight numbers to check for consistency and accuracy.

Cosmic radiation SmartLynx did not wish to base calculations on a city pair but rather on an actual route flown. So the AIRCRAFT IT Operations • MARCH-APRIL 2018 • 33

flight plans are fed to Aerocloud and PCAire who run it through their engine; there is an interface from Aerocloud to RAIDO that will predict the cosmic radiation dose for every flight. When the measured value is available post-flight, the file is updated with that actual dose. Crew members have access to these figures through their crew portal along with predicted doses for future flights. The effective dose should not exceed 50 milliSievert (mSv) in any single year. (1 mSv = 1000 microSievert (uSv). A warning appears in the rostering system if any of the following limits is exceeded:

CASE STUDY: SMARTLYNX

• 20 mSv (20.000 uSv) — the average maximum dose in 1 year (soft rule); • 50 mSv (50.000 uSv) — the maximum dose in 1 year; • 100 mSv (100.000 uSv) — the maximum dose in 5 years. All of Smart Lynx’s training is logged into Mint to determine that crews are legal (or not legal) to fly based on the most limiting expiry date which is exported to the Ops system. The status is then made available for the crew to see what they need to know: • FCL (Flight Crew License) • MED (Medical License) • ENG (English) • PPO (Passport) • LC32 (Line check) • FC (Master Qualification) • CC (Master Qualification) There is an interchange of information between the Ops system and the training management system so that the crew trainer knows if the crew member is off ill or on vacation. There is also an on-line access for SmartLynx to Sofia Flight Training web portal and, when the SmartLynx Training Coordinator books the SIM (Simulator) and manually enters it into the Training Management system, which can automatically assign the training.

AIRPORT CATEGORIZATION

This is something with which SmartLynx is very pleased because nobody can fly to an airport unless it’s Airport categorized. SmartLynx devised a system whereby, if an airport is put into the Ops system it is checked against a list of airports that are already approved and, if the airport is not approved, an email warning will be sent to the person responsible for categorizing all the airports to which Smart Lynx aircraft fly asking him to categorize that airport and add it to the authorized list. For the pilot, if he is allocated to a flight that he has not flown for the last

year, the system will detect that and send him a link with a briefing of the airport category. He will complete the briefing and, if it’s yes then he’s authorized to fly there but, if it’s no, he will not be able to fly there. If he does that flight within every 12 month period he will not have to go through the procedure again.

Getting the best from a paperless techlog Gerrit Jassnowski, Project Manager Paperless Maintenance, Lufthansa CityLine and Udo Stapf, CEO, CrossConsense share the path to an Electronic Technical Logbook (eTL/eLB) AIRCRAFT IT Operations • MARCH-APRIL 2018 • 36

CASE STUDY: LUFTHANSA CITYLINE

I

n this article we hope to offer readers an overview of Lufthansa CityLine’s implementation of an electronic TechLog. For ease of understanding, we’ll break the whole project into manageable steps but first, a profile of the airline that is the subject of this case study.

• Because of the cockpit size (see above) it should be possible for maintenance staff to finalize documentation without entering the cockpit or interfering with the boarding process or preparation of the flight.

LUFTHANSA CITYLINE

Lufthansa CityLine went into this project with some specific ideas on gains they wanted to realize. These can be seen in the strategic targets set for the project. The first target was to reduce the workload. The old manual system required complaints to be entered into the TechLog by the crew and also entered into the ACARS (Aircraft Communications, Addressing and Reporting System) system for transmitting to the CAMO (Continuing Airworthiness Management Organization). On the maintenance side it was the same with every complaint needing to be written down in the paper book and, later on, entered into AMOS. Either way, every complaint had to be reported twice. Looking at the process from an environmental point of view, it would be in everybody’s interest to save paper and Lufthansa CityLine will be able to save up to 2 tons of paper each year by using an electronic TechLog. Also, in the old system, the hard copies were sent to a scanning center for conversion into a PDF format for archiving. Lufthansa CityLine wanted the new solution to eliminate both the hard copy papers and the need for a separate electronic archive and the costs of these processes can be nearly eliminated by using a wholly electronic solution. Especially on the maintenance side there has always been a gap in the transfer of data into the AMOS System, so aircraft status on the CAMO side in the system was not really up-to-date. Also, one obvious reason for using an electronic solution is the elimination of human errors such as readability or mismatches. The problems with unreadable

Lufthansa CityLine is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Deutsche Lufthansa AG serving around 80 destinations throughout Europe and around the world with a fleet of Embraer 190/ -195 and Bombardier CRJ-900; as well as Airbus A340s on behalf of Lufthansa. The airline operates up to 330 flights daily out its Munich and Frankfurt hubs. The home base is located in Munich and together with the line station in Frankfurt and the base maintenance location in Cologne about 2200 employees work for the company. Every year, Lufthansa CityLine flies some 8 million passengers.

THE eTLB PROJECT

In 2015, at the culmination of a two-year project, Lufthansa CityLine implemented AMOS as its main MRO system. After some adjustments and with the stabilization of the system, the airline decided that it was the right time to replace the traditional paper Technical Logbook with an electronic solution. But, before anything further steps were taken, some minimum requirements were established. • Because of the small cockpit size on current aircraft, compatibility with already existing hardware was important. • As Lufthansa CityLine does not currently have in-flight connectivity, the solution had to be one that does not require constant connection to ground. • It clearly made sense that, as AMOS was by then the Lufthansa CityLine MRO system, any eTechLog solution must be able to interface with AMOS.

STRATEGIC TARGETS

“Because of the small cockpit size on current aircraft, compatibility with already existing hardware was important” • Processes around the TechLog at Lufthansa CityLine are optimized around short flights and short turnarounds so the new eTechLog had to be able to be integrated with these approved and proven processes. • Because all operators within the Lufthansa Group are considering electronic TechLogs, the solution would have to be one that could be used across the whole Lufthansa Group. • Any solution would have to be easy-to-use for pilots and maintenance engineers; intuitive and able to be used without extensive training to open and close complaints. • The solution should be compliant with EASA regulations. CASE STUDY: LUFTHANSA CITYLINE

support). One further key point is that CROSSMOS was seen to be compatible with Lufthansa CityLine’s proven and approved TechLog processes.

INSTALLATION

Next, the airline checked the possibility of integrating the eTLB into the existing EFB infrastructure (figure 1) to avoid having to install additional hardware in the cockpit.

“…one obvious reason for using an electronic solution is the elimination of human errors such as readability or mismatches. The problems with unreadable documents will be familiar…” documents will be familiar to readers. One objective was to improve data quality by loading complaint templates into the system so that, for example, an ATA chapter would be pre-built by use of mandatory fields. Documents in the old system were 100% quality checked in the quality department prior to dispatching to the archive whereas that process can also be reduced by use of an electronic solution. And, as mentioned above, the delayed entering of data into AMOS was previously compensated for by a high level of telephone communication which can be reduced with a real-time and up-to-date record of the aircraft status in the system. The new solution has enabled Lufthansa CityLine to reduce the workload in this by half which, in turn, saves up to €250,000 per year.

THE SOLUTION

Taking all that into account, Lufthansa CityLine settled on the CROSSMOS solution from CrossConsense for a number of reasons. First, the system is already in use with a successful two years track record at SWISS International Air Lines. It’s also a system based on standard processes and is flexible which means, for Lufthansa CityLine, Maintenance can connect the devices on the aircraft into the master devices in the back office, creating the opportunity to deal with issues raised without the need to be in the cockpit. Also, CROSSMOS safely complies with EASA regulations and uses the standard AMOS interface (CrossConsense has been working with Lufthansa CityLine for some years, hosts the airline’s AMOS and provides system AIRCRAFT IT Operations • MARCH-APRIL 2018 • 38

FIGURE 1

Currently, the EFB includes 2 fixed laptops installed on each aircraft, each with its own monitor. Crews bring their personal devices into the cockpit which use Windows Surface Pro. On EFB Laptop 1 there is an LTE (Long Term Evolution) router installed that is automatically activated and de-activated according to ground speed. This router establishes Wi-Fi in the cockpit as well as connectivity to the ground server. In addition to this, the crews bring one mobile router to act as a back-up in case of the failure of EFB 1 or its router. And the co-pilot’s personal device is used to update the entire system. Although this EFB infrastructure is not revolutionary, it is reliable with the opportunities for back-ups that were also needed for CROSSMOS. So Lufthansa CityLine decided to implement the CROSSMOS eTLB into the existing EFB infrastructure (figure 2).

CASE STUDY: LUFTHANSA CITYLINE

EFB 1 has also been designated the master for the electronic TechLog. The connectivity and synchronization is established by the fixed and installed router. EFB 2 serves as a back-up and as master in the event of a failure of EFB 1. Synchronization can then take place using the mobile router. Maintenance will connect their devices into the master device through logging in to the Wi-Fi established by the router. And since Lufthansa CityLine has not been using a cabin log for more than fifteen years, all complaints are entered into the technical log book so there’s no need to implement a cabin log book at the outset.

CHALLENGES OF THE PROJECT

EFB and eTLB infrastructure setup eTLB solution : • Use EFB1 as master, connectivity established by EFB1 router • EFB 2 becomes master in case of EFB 1 failure, connectivity established by mobile router • Maintenance connect to eTLB by login into router WiFi of EFB • No cabin device/ logbook

FIGURE 2

specifications of the airline’s requirements were established with the definition of the project plan and set-up of the project team. February saw a kick-off meeting with the whole team, including CrossConsense, and the then current paper TechLog process was compared to the CROSSMOS eTLB process which culminated in a new eTLB process flow. It was also decided how the change management would be achieved through regular meetings and newsletters and, looking to the end of the project, a simple and efficient training program was developed using a short introductory video for cockpit crew, to be available through the EFB at any time; while, on the maintenance side, there was a short training program using CBT (computer based training) and, on the aircraft, through key users. The final step, and still pending at the time of writing, was approval by the authority. The roll-out was originally planned for December 2017 but was postponed to Q1 2018 for two good reasons. That pending approval from the authority is one reason while the other is the need to get the software onto all aircraft EFB systems which has to await the regular EFB updates scheduled for Q1 2018.

PROJECT TIMELINE

Figure 3 shows the project timeline and associated milestones. In January 2017, management approval was given to start the project following which the

The most important challenges have been the implementation of the electronic signature and to get approval for the solution from the relevant authority — the German Federal Aviation Office (LBA). Another challenge was to establish the change management project — employee mind sets and concerns regarding the collection and use of electronic data

CASE STUDY: LUFTHANSA CITYLINE

BUSINESS CASE

The business case on the cost side was based on the investment in the software license and for the operational fees for the software and interfaces. On the savings side, the project took into account the savings on the paper books and the improvement in efficiency for the maintenance engineers as well as the reduced archiving costs. The calculations were very conservative, taking into account items that were, in the event, no longer needed. Even with those higher costs, that cost is projected to be amortized over three years, until early 2020.

PROJECT ORGANIZATION

Every project needs an organization to manage the project and its relations with the wider business. The organization to manage the eTLB project in Lufthansa CityLine can be seen below (figure 4). Project Lead Steering ering Board

Continuing Airworthiness

“The most important challenges have been the implementation of the electronic signature and to get approval for the solution from the relevant authority — the German Federal Aviation Office (LBA).” have to be taken seriously and addressed so that they can use the new system with confidence. And, of course, the new system must remain in compliance with all relevant authorities’ regulations. For Lufthansa CityLine, it was also important to establish and maintain standards within the Lufthansa Group; so, all

adaptations and modifications of the system had to be discussed within the Group. Furthermore, it was important to have a stable and safe process for login and for the signature. Finally, one of the most challenging aspects was completing the project within the tight timeline set. AIRCRAFT IT Operations • MARCH-APRIL 2018 • 40

“Lufthansa CityLine are one of the first commercial operators in Germany applying for an approval to use an electronic TechLog (eTLB) solution.” GETTING APPROVAL BY THE REGULATORY AUTHORITY

Lufthansa CityLine are one of the first commercial operators in Germany applying for an approval to use an electronic TechLog (eTLB) solution. one. This law was superseded by an EU directive in 2014 and expired on 29 July 2017. Fortunately, Lufthansa CityLine and CrossConsense worked closely together to ensure compliance with the regulations and CROSSMOS was already approved by EASA in relation to the implementation at Group company SWISS International Air Lines. That said, the authorities were involved in this Lufthansa CityLine project from the beginning, discussing the scope of the project. A CAME draft of the new electronic log book was available for the authorities and the LBA came forward with some requirements and comments during the course of the project. Those requirements were taken into account by Lufthansa CityLine and the changes reported back to the authority. In October 2017, CAME (Continued Airworthiness Management Exposition) approval was requested. At the time of writing, a final meeting with the CAMO auditors with a full demonstration of the system to the authorities and the approval were still pending.

THE eTLB PROJECT AT CROSSCONSENSE

CrossConsense took the decision to develop an electronic Technical LogBook in 2013. The developer and solution vendor had been working with AMOS implementations for 15 years but wanted to also develop a CrossConsense product. As a start, about 150 user stories were collected as the basis for workshops with airlines, stakeholders and authorities, at which CrossConsense presented its thoughts, up to that point, on an eTLB solution. Based on the outcome from those workshops, CrossConsense developed a flexible eTLB solution, CROSSMOS, and, in early 2016, the first implementation went live with SWISS International Air Lines. Since then, Edelweiss has gone live with CROSSMOS in April 2017 and contracts to implement the solution

have been signed with other airlines including Air Dolomiti, Deutsche Lufthansa and, of course, Lufthansa CityLine, the subject of this case study. Because of the close affinity between CrossConsense and AMOS, people sometimes assume that CROSSMOS is an AMOS related solution, but it is not. The name CROSSMOS is derived from ‘CrossConsense’ and the word ‘Cosmos’, a term that stands for unlimited possibilities for interfacing. The goal was always to develop a standard software solution; CrossConsense never wanted to have a stand-alone solution for one airline or one customer but rather wanted to develop something that could be used by any customers. The developers feel that CROSSMOS can be considered a standard solution because the

development started with 12 airlines and the authorities who participated in the two-day workshops (see above), saw the ideas that CrossConsense had on the subject of eTLB, and contributed their own thoughts to discussions which led to some desirable features being agreed and refined in later monthly calls. The whole development used agile methodology (figure A). There are two main ways to develop software. The ‘Waterfall’ method is where the developer collects a catalog of requirements, develops the software and presents it to the customer who might say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ — which could turn out to have been a significant waste of resources. ‘Agile’, on the other hand, is where the customer (user) participates in the development process with regular involvement and changes during the

AIRCRAFT IT Operations • MARCH-APRIL 2018 • 42

development where necessary — a methodology that anticipates the need for flexibility and applies a level of pragmatism into the delivery of the finished product. With this, there is a very high likelihood of acceptance by the customer, which means a very low likelihood that money will be wasted.

GERRIT JASSNOWSKI

Around CROSSMOS There are a number of functionalities around CROSSMOS but an essential feature is that it does not interfere with a user airline’s current back office; rather the eTLB solution works with the back office supplying data that can be used in a number of ways. So, there is only one source of data for users to maintain. There is a good enterprise service bus (ESB) available which allows users to collect and map data to all back-end systems on the market today. The system currently interfaces with AMOS and with SAP but is able to interface with other E&M systems a customer airline is using. A rule engine is available where users can set-up workflows, perhaps related to a specific issue raised by a pilot but that has a wider application or perhaps to ensure that some data goes to a specific system. Computer based training (CBT) is offered with the solution for pilots, cabin crew and maintenance personnel. Associated apps have also been developed such as ‘Aircraft Status’ where the pilot can see the aircraft status even while he is in the briefing room. And there is an advanced trouble shooting system called ACSIS that can be connected with CROSSMOS and helps users to better manage the aircraft. At the time of writing, SWISS International Air Lines had performed about 120,000 flights using CROSSMOS, of which some 2,360 had had no connectivity so had to use a back-up solution (for SWISS that is a USB stick) for the legal ‘leave data on the ground’ process. That meant that more than 117,000 flights were able to use a regular sync process (98% connectivity reliability) with an average synchronization time of 20 seconds.

In 1993 he moved to Augsburg Airways and 1997 to Lufthansa CityLine. In 2014, he completed his bachelor’s degree in professional aviation and became team leader in the MCC. In 2016, he became responsible for implementation of paperless maintenance and ELB and, in 2017, completed his master’s degree in technical management. He now leads the team responsible for aircraft systems and structure for the Lufthansa CityLine regional fleet.

ROLL-OUT PLANNING

LUFTHANSA CITYLINE

The plan at the time of writing was to commence training with the new eTLB solution in Q1 2018 (figure 5) and to receive the final software from CossConsense by the end of January 2018 so that it can be sent to Lufthansa EFB Support Team in Frankfurt. Lufthansa CityLine discussed with their authority a trial using four aircraft over four weeks starting in Q1 2018. There was planned to be a review with the authority after the trial phase in order to get final approval following which the fleet will be activated and move on to the stabilization phase over several months, during which the paper based technical log book will remain on board aircraft as a back-up in case of unforeseen problems. FUTURE AMBITIONS

Although the Cabin Log is not going to be used at the outset there is still an interest in adding that in to the system at a later date. Also, once CROSSMOS is up and running, the Dent & Buckle chart from AMOS will be loaded to the system along with some other technical documents plus there is a plan to improve the use by connecting personal pilot devices. Looking further ahead, Lufthansa CityLine will work with CrossConsense and the wider Lufthansa Group to continue to improve the solution. Finally, Lufthansa CityLine has a project to introduce in-flight connectivity which, when it has been implemented, will also be used for the eTLB. We hope that readers have found this outline of the Lufthansa CityLine eTLB project useful. Pegasus Airlines EFB: buy or build?

When Pegasus Airlines wanted a new EFB, the decision was, as Mehmet Akverdi, EFB Technical Admin and Capt. Korhan Celik, Boeing Type Leader explain, to build one that exactly matched their needs

H

aving developed our own EFB program at Pegasus Airlines, we’d like this article to offer readers a glimpse into what we have achieved and how we have achieved it as well as an insight into our EFB and how it works, our aircraft tracker and the dashboard that the whole solution uses for analysis. First of all, though, it will be useful to understand something about Pegasus airlines.

PEGASUS AIRLINES

The 5,000 employees at Pegasus Airlines deliver almost 3,000 flights a week and fly nearly 25 million passengers a year to over 100 destinations, including more than 70 international destinations in 40 countries (see route maps below). With its hub at Istanbul’s Sabiha Gokcen International Airport, Pegasus, founded in 1990, was the first low-cost airline in Turkey and remains the fastest growing. The business was acquired by ESAS Holding in 2005 and is a purely private company with the largest fleet in the region.

critical to navigational safety were stored in aircraft cockpits and, with a weight of up to 50 kilograms, they added to fuel burn plus every update had to be made manually at the cost of increased workload and higher expenditure — paper, printing and copying costs. EFB improved in-flight efficiency for Pegasus, coupling the EFB software with the Panasonic Toughpad FZ-G1 10” tablet which has EFB certification and has been proven to withstand impact, water, dust, vibration and extreme temperatures, with a screen that can be read in direct sunlight.

PEGASUS INTERNATIONAL ROUTE NETWORK

As well as the named brand itself, Pegasus also has two subsidiary airlines: iZair, based in Izmir, Turkey and AirManas, based in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Pegasus flies 43 Boeing 737-800NG plus 24 Airbus A320, 12 –CEO and 12 –NEO types; Pegasus was launch customer for the A320-NEO. iZair has seven B737-800NG and AirManas has two B737-800 plus one B737-400. In addition to the current 77 strong fleet across the businesses, a further 65 Airbus A320s are on order so that, by 2023 we expect the fleet size to exceed 150. For a number of reasons, we decided to build our own EFB at Pegasus and, at the same time, we built an aircraft tracking system so that the airline can know where all its aircraft are at any time.

The journey to today’s EFB

The Pegasus development and implementation team worked for more than a year to create a unique user-friendly system. In fact, the airline had been using EFB applications since 2009 (figure 1) when we started to use a laptop in the cockpit before take-off and after landing but not enroute. Following the arrival of Cloud technology and tablets we started to use tablets in our cockpits with the introduction of the new solution. With Windows OS and Cloud technology we now enjoy a near flawless package that has become indispensable for all flights. We did look at EFB software from different vendors but we feel that EFB needs to be an integrated system, not just software (figure 2). Also, while off-the-shelf

“Once we had decided to build our own EFB, we worked very closely with the pilots as a result of which, the development team understood what the pilots thought and got a better understanding of the limitations in the software.” solutions might well take pilots’ views into account, they cannot involve them either as early or in as much depth as Pegasus was able to do when developing its own EFB solution. Once we had decided to build our own EFB, we worked very closely with the pilots as a result of which, the development team understood what the pilots thought and got a better understanding of the limitations in the software. Our requirements were limitless but the pilots enabled us to prioritize in a way that would support them. The team also learned in detail what the pilot was doing in the cockpit and what they needed.not a software! EFB is an integrated system,

automatically. Dispatch calculations can be made within ‘landing performance’ and there is also a capability for In-Flight calculation. It’s possible to add MEL (Minimum Equipment List) and CDL (Configuration Deviation List) for the aircraft before the flight plus take-off performance, calculate maximum take-off weight, assume temperature, etc. Also there are engine out procedures charts plus SID (Standard Instrument Departure) calculations — if the pilot selects SID, this module will offer the pilot the variance for using one engine out or SID procedure. MODULES — PEGASUS EFB

Looking more closely at our modules, here are a few specifics.

Flight Module There is an electronic version of the OFP, the eFlight Plan, as well as an eLoad Sheet and eTrim Sheet plus an eVoyage Report. Also, pilots can ‘order’ fuel before they go to the aircraft so that, by the time they arrive onboard, the fuel is loaded and even if the pilot remains in the cockpit between flights he can still use this facility.

Documentation Module

We have established a good specification for our pilots with a Versioning System and a High Speed PDF Viewer, plus we are publishing documents based on Airport or Aircraft so pilots can access the documents easily on their tablets.

Performance Module Performance modules include take-off and landing performance, and weight & balance. This screen supports mixed fleets and we can show all performance calculations on the same page. There’s also live weather with the information filled

TAKE-OFF PERFORMANCE SCREEN

Handling Module

The EFB offers handling information for pilots on approach and information about airports, with access to airport related memorandums as well as information about contractors and suppliers. After the implementation, those essential EFB applications could be accessed more easily. Past flight plans were time consuming to prepare and approve whereas, with the new system, flight plans

can be received through the system, be approved and then returned; all electronically. Performance calculations crucial to flight safety are also completed through the system and their accuracy (planned versus actual) can be monitored during the flight. Pegasus cockpits are now free of those heavy documents clearing cockpit space for the manuals that are mandated by the civil aviation agency and to keep important reference documents within easy reach.

BENEFITS

As a result of this program, Pegasus Airlines has gained some tremendous benefits in terms of safety, regulatory compliance, pilot workplace quality and, not to forget, savings. The new system decreases the pilot’s workload and saves time by supporting faster aircraft turnaround times which is a very important benefit for a low cost airline such as Pegasus. Increased pilot efficiency has been another benefit gained from the new system with pilots focusing on their flight rather than on maintaining/completing the documentation or making calculations. And a further benefit has been improving onboard safety and efficiency of flying. This EFB solution pays its way as can be seen from the savings detailed below. Using the application we are able to track ground and air traffic movements live and in real time as well as follow our KPIs using the Pegasus dashboards. Readers will understand when we say that any aircraft sitting on the ground is losing money; so one of our key objectives was to keep the aircraft flying.

CASE STUDY: PEGASUS AIRLINES

Pegasus (at the time when the new EFB was being developed) was achieving ten to eleven hours utilization per day but our aim was twelve hours. However, first we had to give the flight crew the right tools to improve safety and to reduce the workload, and to give them the time so that they could be faster when on the ground. Our standard turnaround time was 35 minutes, which we aimed to improve down to 25 minutes, towards which end our calculations now show we are achieving that, especially in Istanbul. We feel that the program and the new EFB has achieved its objectives and that users are all happy with improved revenue and profitability: aircraft are flying more with 12.4 hours utilization at the last count. Using the dashboards, the airline management and board can see how much things have improved (and how much money we are making). The Pegasus’ EFB project using the Panasonic Toughpad, stands out as a comprehensive cockpit software solution including tablet mounting, database, data connectivity tools, MDM, modules and support. It allows pilots to focus and work more carefully; pilots using EFB are kept up-to-date with quick and easy version based updates, and several applications can be run at the same time. When the flight map is open, the pilot can examine other documents, make take-off calculations and dynamically monitor runway conditions using Dynamic Runway to easily navigate to parking areas using the airport moving map. All necessary updates are delivered to the device online and no time is wasted trying to locate information among hundreds of documents. As well as the fuel saving from less weight in the cockpit, the EFB also supports low engine take-off to further reduce fuel burn. Overall, using the EFB has saved Pegasus €135,000 per plane per year (2016 figures); totalling around €11 milion savings a year.

MEHMET AKVERDI

In 2013, After graduating with honours in Avionics and Industrial Engineering, Mehmet started to work as aircraft performance engineer in Pegasus Airlines. He now has four years’ experience with Electronic Flight Bag (EFB), performance engineering, business intelligence and IoT (Internet of Things) systems in the airline industry. He has undertaken work related to aircraft performance engineering, software development, system integration, performance-based navigation and EFB solutions.

CAPT. KORHAN CELIK DOCUMENT VIEWER

SUMMARY

To close, readers can look at the following demonstration: http://bit.ly/Pegasus-EFB-Demo The program and development were still live at the time of writing with feedback emails through the EFB system on whatever topic the pilots wished to raise and the team could reply at any time; but more importantly, they could address whatever issue had been raised to improve the solution. As pilots work with the EFB modules, they can leave evidence of their completion of each stage and, once the flight has finished all of that information is transferred to a PDF file, a copy of the OFP. So if somebody wants to see what happened or the civil aviation authority wishes to inspect a flight, they need only to check the PDF file — there is no need for Pegasus to store a load of paper. It’s all in the servers and can be accessed anywhere at any time. All approvals remain as before but in electronic form plus, to meet EASA regulations, the system records who will be flying and who is monitoring the flight. We hope this has given readers an insight into the EFB that we developed for ourselves at Pegasus Airlines using the Panasonic Toughpad. Readers can visit www.pegasusefb.com website for more details. THE WORLD ACCORDING TO IT & ME!

Moving forward with a tablet EFB program David B. Abbott, Director of Business Development, Avionics Support Group (ASG)

E

veryone has seen and agrees that tablet devices (whether you choose an iPad, Surface or Toughbook) have changed the airline industry for good. The major questions now are deciding how to start your EFB program and how to get the most from it. As an analogy, let’s look at today’s parents who are teaching their children how to swim. Most choose to put ‘water wings’ on their kids to introduce them to the pool. There is nothing wrong with this approach. The good news is that the child learns there is nothing to be afraid of in the water and that the pool is actually a really fun place to be. The bad news is that no child can learn how to swim properly while wearing water wings. They must shed the water wings and start from scratch. Now we look at an EFB program. A lot of airlines are starting their program by using a suction cup mount or some other home-grown

mounting solution. This approach is fine. The good news is that it’s cheap and lets Flight Ops prove to management and finance that a tablet device can be used as a successful EFB device. However, the bad news is

that this is the end game, just like water wings. A long term, successful EFB program requires the ability to add power to the tablet and to be able to tap into the data busses on the aircraft to support more complex

tasks like communication, weather and own ship position. This cannot be achieved with a suction cup or other temporary mounting devices. The airline must scrap this first implementation and start over with a dedicated STC mount, power and cradle. The question is this: Do we start with a cheap suction cup as a temporary solution or start with a more solid foundation on which we can build a more robust EFB program? With our in-house FAA DAR / DER as principles of the company, we at Avionics Support Group (ASG) believe in doing things right the first time and that there is no reason to throw good money after bad. You can only build a great house once you have first built a solid foundation. Lufthansa Cargo uses weather information to improve fuel efficiency: Bjorn Ostertag, Head of Punctuality and Fuel Management shares the project

LUFTHANSA CARGO

The airline has about 4,500 employees and a fleet of 17 aircraft — 12MD11F and 5 Boeing 777F — serving over 300 destinations world-wide. The business turnover is roughly €2.1bn each year with fuel costs amounting to € 259m or 20 per cent of all costs. Given that proportion of costs, fuel efficiency measures have quite a big leverage on the cost structure (figure 1). The mathematics are quite easy: price multiplied by quantity.

“… it’s important to focus on the quantity of fuel consumed which is where the value of fuel savings can be realized. That can be both in increased fuel efficiency leading to reduced costs and, because less fuel is burned…” FUEL CONSUMPTION AND COSTS

Of course, the price of fuel can hardly be influenced by the airline so, instead, it’s important to focus on the quantity of fuel consumed which is where the value of fuel savings can be realized. That can be both in increased fuel efficiency leading to reduced costs and, because less fuel is burned, it also reduces CO2 emissions. Lufthansa Cargo takes an overall view across six different fields where we try to find measures to be implemented and steadily improved on year-by-year (figure 2). Fuel efficiency measures are mainly related to six areas ñ

L

ufthansa Cargo (LH Cargo) has recently conducted and implemented an interesting trial and project involving a modern wind uplink solution. I’d like to share the experience with readers looking at three elements: an overview focusing on fuel consumption and costs in the Lufthansa group; The Aventus Nowcast system at the heart of this project; and the trial and evaluation process undertaken at Lufthansa Cargo, including weather analysis. But first I’ll give you a brief introduction to LH Cargo.

Ground / Handling

Air Traffic Control Flight Operations

responsible for flight planning with many small opportunities to save fuel, so their involvement in fuel efficiency is quite intense. Network might not, at first, seem a major contributor to fuel efficiency but Lufthansa Cargo works with the Network Department who determine block times, ground times; negotiate traffic rights etc. The contribution of Flight Operations is, perhaps, easier to understand with most airlines’ fuel efficiency departments being part of their Flight Operations. Finally, Air Traffic Control (ATC): LH Cargo has a good relationship with German ATC and meets regularly with them to discuss ideas as to how flight operations over German airspace might be improved. These are the six areas where fuel efficiency measures are generated and undertaken and, in figure 3, there are a few examples, without going into too many details, of what they can contribute. It starts with Ground Handling at the very beginning of the process because Ground Handling will determine the center of gravity (CG) and the trim which, of course, influences fuel consumption. Morning Arrival Stream) or iSTREAM (integrated SESAR TRials for Enhanced Arrival Management); Paris Charles de Gaulle was the first airport in Europe to trial this, Zurich followed and now Frankfurt is being talked about as the next. EMAS is about the sequence of arriving aircraft, especially in the morning, after the night ban has lifted, which will, of course, have an impact on fuel usage.

Dispatch

Readers will certainly understand what lays behind these fuel efficiency measures.

Flight Operations Calculating the correct cost index is an issue and something that LH Cargo does on a regular basis, individually for each flight — not a flat cost index per month or per city pair. Also, from the IATA fuel book, there are measures such as Single Engine Taxi that can be implemented.

Technical Operations Technical Operations determines the frequency of aircraft washing and engine washing but even something like a fan blade re-contouring can improve the performance of an engine; so the airline decided to do that, even though it’s quite intense work.

Ground Operations We’ve already looked at a couple of measures where Ground Operations can affect fuel efficiency. CG optimization is an important one but also, how

precise is the Zero Fuel Weight (ZFW) prediction — the closer one can get with the ZFW prediction, the better the flight plan will be. LH Cargo also invests in its ULDs (Unit Loading Devices) with lightweight containers and pallets.

Network

Readers might wonder what ‘Traffic Rights’ have to do with fuel efficiency but, for example, if an aircraft enters Chinese airspace, it’s only allowed to enter at a certain waypoint and the airline has to have already secured clearance before the flight period has started so it’s a good idea to negotiate with the Chinese authorities as to which waypoint is the best one at which to enter Chinese Airspace.

ATC This is a very broad field and it’s not only about Continuous Descent Operation (CDO) or ‘Directs’ over certain airspace. Through the SESAR (Single European Sky ATM Research) project, many things are being generated: for example, at the time of writing, there was the project called EMAS (Early AIRCRAFT IT Operations • MARCH-APRIL 2018 • 52

As mentioned above, Dispatch can influence many things. For example: contingency procedure — it’s not only about a 3% or 5% flat contingency and ‘has one protected or not protected?’ It might be better to analyze contingency but that’s not easy because a lot of data is needed; that said, there is the possibility to implement a procedure called Analyzed Contingency Fuel (ACF) and LH Cargo will be the frontrunner here within the Lufthansa Group.

AVENTUS NOWCAST

Having taken an overview of the big picture, I will now focus down on one issue that has been engaging LH Cargo during the past twelve months (at the time of writing) with a trial to get some more precise wind data into the aircraft. The history of this started five years ago when I started to take over the Fuel Efficiency department and heard from pilots that they wanted more precise wind data because there is so much potential in it. It actually took a while before the airline could take that step but in 2016 it was started. LH Cargo does not use data from DWD (the German Weather Service) anymore but uses the wind data from the UK’s Met Office which has the advantage that it works on a 10km grid, as opposed to the 140km grid used by most weather services, and with many more levels, which makes Met Office data very precise. How it works is that the Avtech tool Aventus NowCast communicates directly, via datalink, with

“…in the real world it will never be the precise wind being loaded into the FMS but if the error level can be reduced, the more accurate the wind loaded into the FMS is, the better the FMS is equipped to determine the trajectory.” the Flight Management System (FMS) of LH Cargo’s aircraft; it wasn’t necessary to set up any specific IT tool or interface which made the job quite easy and not complex to use. Messages are sent automatically to the aircraft and the pilot has only to ‘accept’ with a single click for the wind data to be uploaded into the FMS which then has actual wind data available in order to calculate the next flight trajectory. Wind data can also be requested manually by the pilot at any time. Here’s the theory where some fuel saving should come from. Usually there are standard levels where one gets wind data from different providers but it’s normally levels 100, 200, 300 or 100,180, 240; and, no matter what the weather situation is, it will always be wind data for these flight levels in the FMS. However, it’s very unlikely that any changes to wind will fit exactly into these levels so Avtech applies an algorithm to those levels that are needed for that flight and for that profile. The aim is to reduce wind error. Of course, in the real world it will never be the precise

wind being loaded into the FMS but if the error level can be reduced, the more accurate the wind loaded into the FMS is, the better the FMS is equipped to determine the trajectory. Both on the Avtech database and in the FMS there are procedure constraints plus the FMS will always follow these procedure constraints to move the top of the descent and the vertical speed to that which is most efficient. That’s the theory and, over the last year, LH Cargo tested it to discover whether there really are savings available. So, how did the trial work?

TRIAL AND EVALUATION

LH Cargo started a ten month trial of Avtech’s Aventus NowCast from November 2016 until August 2017 using the twelve aircraft in the MD11F fleet operating all around the world; there was no focus on any particular city pair or airport so that a broad database could be generated. One reason that the trial took so long was that we didn’t wish to focus on one specific month but to conduct the trial over a longer period. Especially

Figure 4 shows the wind delta during cruise: the blue line shows the error levels from the new wind uplink while the yellow line shows the equivalent error levels using the old system. It’s quite obvious that the level of error between the actual wind encountered and what had been loaded into the FMS is lower with the new wind uplink; there’s still some error but it is a definite improvement. Also, the quality of the data is not as volatile as it was with the old system. The second step was to investigate wind delta during descent which generates more or less the same outcome (figure 5). Next step: wind error has to be transferred into fuel savings Average Daily Head-tail Wind Error – Cruise – Aventus vs Previous System versus NoWinds

between February and April 2017, all FDM in-flight data was collected. LH Cargo has a tool to collect FDM data and to measure and monitor the results of any fuel efficiency measures. The trial covered more than a thousand flights that could be analyzed in detail, which entailed quite a lot of manual work but it was felt that the large number was needed in order to be sure that it wasn’t just a single week or a single flight that gained some saving. The first step was to compare the wind error of two different wind sources (figure 4).

● Fuel Saving analysis of LCAG only based on descent winds – enroute savings on top, but out of scope in this trial ● Boeing performance tables were used to calculate fuel savings in dependence of wind error ● No savings calculated below FL100

First step: Comparison of wind error of two different wind sources Average Daily Head-tail Wind Error – Cruise – Aventus vs Previous System

FIGURE 4

FIGURE 5

The challenge now was to translate those improved and more consistent levels of wind error into fuel savings and LH Cargo used the manufacturers’ performance tables which take weight, temperature and altitude into account: from there, it’s possible to calculate a fuel penalty between the wind error and the fuel used. We then decided, for our business case, that we would take fuel savings during descent into account, but neither during cruise nor during final approach, below flight level 100 (figure 6). FIGURE 6

On average, the fuel savings during the trial amounted to 26 kilos per flight and some might wonder whether that was a lot of savings. However, there are only a few single measures that would generate savings of more than 50 kilos per flight, so 26 kilos was a satisfactory saving per flight. It was decided that, for the business case, a more conservative figure should be used. So a calculation was done which gave the various figures a weighting because Frankfurt showed a different average fuel saving compared to Dakar and JFK; it was also taken into account that not all pilots would use the tool or that a technical problem might mean there was no wind uplink. The outcome was a saving figure for the business case of 17 kilos per flight to be sure that, over a whole year using this tool, there would be some substantial savings to be realized. Interestingly, there were quite large variations including some days when there were hardly any fuel savings and others when quite large fuel savings were realized. The reason behind this, we learned, was a dependency on the current weather phenomena.

WEATHER ANALYSIS

Figure 7.1 is a graph showing the average daily fuel saving per flight for the descent into Frankfurt. The map is a typical one but, of course, would differ for every day during the period.

FIGURE 7.1

The blue line in the graph records the fuel saving in kilograms and it can be seen that there were days when there was hardly any fuel saving while there were other days when the fuel savings were huge. The map shows the weather situation on one day (in this case, 18th February, a zero savings day) with the focus on Frankfurt (blue dot on the map) because the majority of LH Cargo’s descents are into Frankfurt. On that day, as the chart shows, the weather was stable over Frankfurt. The next day (19th February) the weather changed (figure 7.2), becoming rougher over Frankfurt, and the fuel saving increased… Weather Analysis ● Average Daily Fuel Saving (per Flight) - Descent into Frankfurt - Aventus vs. Previous system

… then on 23rd February (figure 7.3), it was very unstable weather over Frankfurt so that the fuel saving went up significantly. Weather Analysis ● Average Daily Fuel Saving (per Flight) - Descent into Frankfurt - Aventus vs. Lido

Bjorn Ostertag is currently with Lufthansa Cargo in the position of Head of Fuel Efficiency & Punctuality Management. His career with Lufthansa group started with his apprenticeship while studying for Master’s degree in Business and Commerce at University of Hagen and Frankfurt. His responsibilities within the company varied from brand evaluation, multilateral pricing, airport services and ground handling. The latter project was Bjorn’s position prior to the current one — the Head of Aircraft Ground Handling in Frankfurt within Lufthansa Cargo.

LUFTHANSA CARGO

Lufthansa Cargo ranks among the world’s leading air freight carriers. The carrier serves around 300 destinations in approximately 100 countries with its own fleet of freighters, the belly capacities of passenger aircraft operated by Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines and Eurowings, and an extensive road feeder service network. As of August 2017, the Lufthansa Cargo fleet consisted of 12 MD11F and 5 Boeing 777F aircraft.

AVTECH FIGURE 7.3

The fuel savings depend very much on what the weather situation is and, of course, it’s not possible to predict what the weather will be like next year which is one of the reasons why LH Cargo assumed only 17 kilos per flight saving on average. The project has entailed twelve months of intensive work, at the end of which LH Cargo decided to use the Aventus wind uplink on all of the MD11F aircraft and on the Boeing 777F fleet as well. Furthermore, other airlines within the Lufthansa Group are looking at what LH Cargo is doing. That said, the implementation work will have to AIRCRAFT IT Operations • MARCH-APRIL 2018 • 55

Through our EHM services, we monitor around 10,000 engines, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, analysing billions of data points on-board per flight, and millions every day on the ground. Our data services complement the Group’s TotalCare® Service Solutions of Maintenance, Availability, Efficiency and Asset Value, allowing our customers to increase availability of their critical assets, minimising risk and operational disruption to ultimately improve their operational efficiency.

The concept consists of two ruggedized 10.1” Panasonic tablets installed in the cockpit combined with a data integration center and a communication unit installed in the avionics compartment. The data integration center is used for power, aircraft interface and server capability and the communication unit enables and controls the data communication between the EFB system and the airline’s ground infrastructure. The SA Group provides complete turn-key avionics solutions for civil and military aircraft.

OptiClimb is based on Machine Learning combined with Optimization and aims at reducing the fuel consumption through the use of flight data. After 2 years of R&D, it was applied to a fleet of Boeing 737 at Transavia France and demonstrated that 10% of the fuel used during climb ended up in $40 savings per flight. Yearly, it means that for one aircraft the savings can reach $80’000. With 25 aircraft in its fleet, Transavia can save $ 2 M per year. It is a very promising offer for any airline. SafetyCube is an integrated risk and compliance management software that provides airlines with a ready-to-use solution for new IR-OPS requirements. FlightScanner allows you to automatically identify the factors which explain hazardous situations based on all flights data. AirsideWatch determines the runway condition without interfering with operations at a time when airport safety and capacity issues have become increasingly complex to manage.
