MACKENZIE EBEL MacKenzie Ebel is a well-known hockey athlete at Princeton University and it was her humble beginnings in the Airdrie Minor Hockey Association (AMHA) that launched her hockey career. Ebel began playing hockey at age five in Airdrie and played for seven years before moving on to the Rocky Mountain Raiders Female Bantam AAA, based in Cochrane, Alta. After two years on the AAA team she moved to southern Alberta to play for the Warner Warriors in the Junior Women’s Hockey League (JWHL) for her three years of midget. After graduation, Ebel continued to play hockey for two

years at a prep school in Kent, Connecticut, and prepared herself for Ivy League school consideration. While at Kent, she committed to play for Princeton University, a Division 1 program in the NCAA. “Looking back, playing in Airdrie is where it all started for me,” says Ebel. It took a lot of hard work and commitment to be where she is but Ebel encourages aspiring hockey athletes to continue working hard to make it to the next level, especially young girls. “It is one of the best decisions I have ever made.” Ebel graduates in June with a degree in psychology and has future plans to become a clinical psychologist.

DUSTIN TAYLOR Dustin Taylor played for the CFR Chemicals Midget AAA Bisons from 20072008 and 10 years later returned as associate coach. In 2018, he took over as head coach and has been there since. As head coach, Taylor has been able to further shape young hockey players who started their hockey career the same way he did. In his position, Taylor is looking to build on the strong cultural foundation that is already established in the Bison program and create even more success on the ice. Since his involvement with the team Taylor has seen 25 players graduate to junior hockey, two of which have received NCAA Division 1 Scholarships. “Bison athletes have a specific identity when they leave this program,” says Taylor. “One that emulates integrity, enthusiasm, perfect effort and competitive excellence.” KURTIS CHAPMAN Kurtis Chapman played for the CFR Chemicals Midget AAA Bisons in the 2015-2016 season and then continued on to travel across Western Canada playing for various Junior A teams and a WHL team. Chapman was traded several times during his junior hockey career and played for different teams, including the Olds Grizzlys, Estevan Bruins, Portage Terriers, Regina Pats, Kootenay Ice and Calgary Mustangs. He was then traded to the Victoria Grizzlies where he was able to finish his time as a junior. “I know a lot of players who didn’t know what to think when they got traded,” says Chapman. “I see it as an opportunity to see new people and make new friends.”

Chapman, who is currently attending Mount Royal University, is casually a part of the MRU hockey team, the Cougars. He is signed to begin playing for the SAIT Trojans in September, while he takes Instrumentation Engineering and Technology. “It is amazing where hockey will take you,” says Chapman. “I am grateful for the team players, coaches and lifelong friends I have made.”

CAYDE AUGUSTINE Cayde Augustine played for the CFR Chemicals Midget AAA Bisons for two seasons, starting in Strathmore and moving with the team to Airdrie in 2017. After his final season with the Bisons, Augustine moved up to the Western Hockey League (WHL) and played for the Kelowna Rockets, then was later traded to the Moose Jaw Warriors. He finished off his most recent season with the Warriors, but still looks back fondly on his time with the Bisons. “Being a part of the Bisons helped build my character to move on to the next level of the game,” says Augustine. After his WHL career, Augustine would like to advance to the next level and become a professional, either in Europe or the NHL. “It’s always been a dream of mine to be a professional hockey player and I want to see that through,” he says.

arcy Campbell’s love of hockey has him at the rink more than ever. Airdrie’s first hockey player to hit the ice in an NHL arena finished his globe-trotting pro career in 2014. He’s since settled in Airdrie with his wife, Kristina, and two kids, Gavyn, 8, and Rylum, 7. Now 35 years old, Campbell’s at the rink as an assistant coach for his sons whenever he can. “I could live at the rink if I had a bed there,” he says while sitting on a bench at Explosive Edge, his kids nearby in a training session. “This is like a second home to us.” Raised in Airdrie, Campbell played his minor hockey years here before moving to Strathmore for AAA play with the Bisons in 2000-2002. His Junior A seasons were played with the Canmore Eagles and the Olds Grizzlys. Campbell accepted a scholarship to Fairbanks, Alaska, for three years and signed with the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2007, playing one game with the NHL team. He spent the next seven seasons with the Syracuse Crunch (AHL), Lake Erie Monsters (AHL), teams in Finland and the Czech Republic, back to the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees (Texas, CHL), the Chicago Express (ECHL), and wrapped up his pro career in Germany and Italy in 2012-2014. Gavyn was born in Calgary right before the family moved to Chicago; they then moved to Germany where Rylum was born, and spent the next year in Italy. Campbell met Kristina in high school and they were married in 2009. “Everywhere we went to play hockey, she was there,” says Campbell, who retired from professional play at 30 and moved back to Airdrie. “I can’t really picture myself living somewhere else.” He’s pleased with the experiences he’s had, and how they aided him in achieving his career of four years with the Calgary Police Service (CPS). “They really look for life experience.... Without hockey I wouldn’t have even gotten this job,” says Campbell, a constable with CPS. He and his wife didn’t lace up skates on their boys at three or four years old for the sake of tradition. “You surround your kids with good people, and for me, good people come from the hockey community,” says Campbell. They have the upstairs bonus room of their home devoted to being the “hockey spot” where the boys can “work on their shooting or snipe goals on one another.” “They love it,” says Campbell with a smile, noting they don’t live at the arena; the family enjoys other sports and recreation during the hockey off season. He still gets on the ice himself, playing weekly games in the Airdrie Recreational Hockey League’s A division with the Beavers, and with CPS teams. “It’s good fun, I enjoy it still,” says Campbell. “We’re in a good place now with our family and I don’t know if there’s a whole lot I would change at this point.”

AIRDRIE MINOR HOCKEY 2019-2020
FEMALE HOCKEY IS FLOURISHING IN AIRDRIE. Airdrie Minor Hockey Association (AMHA) female peewee A coach Trevor Simpson is happy to be a part of coaching girls like his daughter, Silas, for the last four years. His ethos is simple. “If you don’t see smiles on the kids’ faces, you’re not going to have a successful season,” said Simpson over the phone while in Kamloops for a peewee A female tournament. He said the girls’ side of the game having fewer players than the mixed stream is an advantage for building morale among teammates. He’s coached about eight of the same girls over four years, where he said that doesn’t happen for his son, who is on a mixed U10 team with only one or two teammates remaining constant year over year. “I see best friends being formed on our team, because they stick together and they’re playing consistently every year together,” said Simpson.
The same happens among parents, and has him saying it’s “almost like being a kid again.” With fewer teams comes lots of travel around south and central Alberta and beyond. Fortunately, Airdrie girls don’t have to commute as far as some rural peers. “It’s tough if you want to play female hockey,” said Simpson, noting it’s a big commitment, but balanced his response with “the girls love it.” “Even if they have the aspirations to play on Team Canada or to go to college, they’re all there for the same reason, and that’s to play girls hockey and to hang out with the girls in the locker room,” he said. Simpson tips his hat to Tara Huck, female director for the AMHA. Huck is one of many volunteers, coaches and parents working to make the sport a success among girls. “We’re trying more to hold events just for our girls, to let them see what it’s like to be on the ice with girls,” says Huck,

noting lots of girls are on a mostly-boys team at a variety of ages and levels. They’ve held several events just for younger girls to be mentored by older teenage players. “It’s good for them to see where they can go, and how fast they can skate one day,” says Huck. She says the recent success of the program started with an all-girls novice team (U9) in 2017-2018, which led to a retention of girls playing atom (U11) the following season for the first time in Airdrie. Those girls won the mixed-gender city league that year. “It was successful, and then our program grew,” says Huck. She acknowledges the challenges for girls playing on co-ed teams. “I think the dynamic in the dressing room changes as they get older.” she says. (Female players do not enter the dressing room until 15 minutes before a game so the bonding with other players is not the same.)
18
Jasmine Rai, 14, faced those challenges herself. Rai followed her younger brother into hockey about five years ago as a first-year atom girl among boys for two months at the end of the season. “I started on the boys’ side, but I didn’t like it because they didn’t involve me in anything,” says Rai. “When I moved to girls, it was just I was more involved ... I like it much better.” The centre has become an advocate for the sport, encouraging a few of her school friends to join, and along with regular linemate, right-winger Marissa Jackson, they were leading the team in points (13 and 11 each, respectively) in mid-January, with 14 games played. With a handful of minor hockey seasons left as a teen, Rai’s not stressing about what’s next for her hockey career. “I think it’ll just come to me as I go,” she says. *Note: Starting with the 2020-2021 season, Hockey Canada is changing age levels to Under-9, 11, 13, 15 and 18, which were formerly known as novice, atom, peewee, bantam and midget.

U11 Player Pathway
for 2020-21 season
The U11 Player Pathway is supported by the Hockey Canada Long-Term Player Development Model. This framework provides the guiding principles for age-appropriate and skill-specific programming for all players in Hockey Canada’s youth hockey system.
The U11 Player Pathway must be followed for the 2020-21 season. The U11 Player Pathway provides an environment that helps all players at the U11 age level (9 and 10 years old) to realize their full potential. Hockey Canada strongly believes that the needs of the player should be at the forefront of the programming. The U11 Player Pathway delivers numerous benefits to participants and their families. The benefits include: • creating a positive experience during evaluations with planned pre-evaluation ice sessions; • avoiding evaluations the first week of school; and • allowing all U11 players to play actively for 100% of the season. FAIR AND EQUAL ICE TIME is a key principle of the U11 Player Pathway. Fair and equal ice time is designed to ensure that all players get the same opportunity to contribute to the outcome of games, regardless of skill or ability. • A coach’s responsibility is to develop all players to contribute. • Shortening of the bench is not permitted. • All players should receive as close to equal ice time as possible, including opportunities on special teams (powerplay and penalty killing). • All skaters should rotate through all positions to ensure each player can try each position. (LW/C/RW/LD/RD) • Full-time goaltenders are allowed. If a team has two goalies, they should rotate for equal playing time and the goalie not playing should be allowed to play out as a skater.
U11 Player Pathway Phases 1. Preparation Phase (September 2020) a. Opportunity for first-year U11 players to become familiar with the rule changes and larger ice surface. b. A player’s first experience in the new hockey season should not be a tryout. This gives all players the opportunity to get back on the ice in a more ‘player‐friendly’ environment. c. Help level playing field; not all players go to hockey schools or prep camps prior to the start of the season.
Every U11 player must have a minimum of four ice sessions prior to formal tryouts starting. 2. Team Selection Phase (September 2020) a. Players should be selected for teams based on overall skill and not position. b. Talent ID is about keeping kids around long enough to see what they can really do.
AIRDRIE MINOR HOCKEY 2019-2020

Tryouts must be a minimum of three formal ice sessions. Recommendation is one skills session, one smallarea games session and one scrimmage game session. 3. Development Phase (October to Mid-November 2020) a. E xhibition games can take place during this phase to finalize team selection. b. League tiering games can take place during this phase for purposes of creating meaningful competition. c. Tournament style tiering weekends should be considered.
Every team must have a period of development time following team selection and prior to the regular season starting. Skills before tactics, tactics before systems. 4. Regular Season Phase (Mid-November 2020 to February 2021) a. Travel time for league games must be considered. b. For longer travel times it is recommended to play multiple games or set up tournament style weekends for league play games when necessary.
This refers to the period from the first regular season game to the start of playoffs. 5. Playoff Phase (March 2021) a. Can take place over multiple weekends and does not have to be in one location. b. Goal is to have more teams playing meaningful games longer into March. c. 100% of players, playing 100% of games.
Playoffs must be tournamentstyle format versus elimination rounds. 6. Off-Season Phase (April to August 2021) a. No player evaluations or formal games are permitted. b. Associations may choose to run development initiatives in April and May, or conditioning initiatives in August. Must be optional for players to attend. c. Multisport activities are recommended during this phase. This refers to the period of time from the end of the playoffs to the start of the next Preparation Phase.

How to make the
AAA Level of Hockey BY JACEY CONWAY
P
laying on a AAA-level hockey team is a great achievement and popular goal for many young hockey athletes. What does it take to play AAA level hockey? Hockey coaches Dustin Taylor and Terry Sydoryk share what they look for when recruiting new players for upcoming seasons. Taylor, who was made head coach of the CFR Bisons Midget AAA in 2018, has high expectations for his team players and looks for devoted athletes who are focused and committed to always being their best. “It requires a sincere amount of focused and disciplined training in all aspects of becoming a great hockey player,” says Taylor. Sydoryk has been coaching AAA hockey teams for eight years, both in Airdrie and Cochrane. In his time as head coach, he has seen the importance of building a strong team and looks for team players when recruiting for new seasons. “In any team sport there is no room for individuals,” says Sydoryk. Playing well on a team is only part of making a AAAlevel hockey team. Both coaches are looking for young athletes who show good character and attitude. “Talent and skill come second to character,” says Taylor. The difference between a good hockey player and a great hockey player is the willingness to take on more work, whether it be more cardio or game work, says Sydoryk. The player who will show great initiative on and off the ice is what both coaches are looking for when putting together the team of 19 players. “We are looking for those who are always hungry for more,” says Sydoryk. It is important for aspiring hockey athletes to come prepared, with an “insane desire to compete.” “That goes a long way for us,” says Taylor. “That drive to be your best when your best is required.”
Being a AAA hockey player comes with many high expectations, the biggest one being the time commitment. Practices are held several times a week, in both the mornings and evenings. In addition to practices players are expected to keep up with team workouts, meetings and games on the weekends, all while maintaining high academic scores. “The program we run and the league we play in is very demanding and heavily scouted,” says Taylor. Both coaches understand the weight of their leadership roles and see the commitment as more than just building up good hockey players. “We are developing young men for a future in life, not just sports,” says Sydoryk. Taylor and Sydoryk have seen sports contribute to the longterm success of individuals, beyond hockey. “The mentality, commitment and focus that is required on a daily basis prepares these young men for the work ethic that’s going to be required at the next level, and life after the game,” says Taylor. Playing for a AAA-level hockey team leaves players with a specific identity when they leave. The identity is one that emulates “integrity, enthusiasm, perfect effort and competitive excellence.” Sydoryk outlines the three important necessities required of a AAA hockey athlete. “Show up, work hard and listen,” he says.

“
very year teams enter into tournaments early as they are a hot commodity and we had our eye on a mountain getaway. We entered the Kimberley tournament before Tiering Round, it being a tier 5 tournament, where we’d started our Tiering Round. In the end we slotted in T3. After much deliberation with the coaching staff and the tournament co-ordinator, we decided to continue on with our plans to head west and take part in the tournament. The parents and kids alike took this weekend with a grain of salt. We didn’t know what we were heading into competition wise, but we did know one thing, we were going to make the most out of this time together and grow as a team. From skiing, mini sticks, sledding and pool time, there was plenty fun to be had for all! Like human nature, you always try and do your best, and although winning is always fun, winning isn’t everything. As it turned out, we ended up moving through the round robin with players trying out new positions and working on the elements of hockey that makes a team successful; communication, support, respecting the game and its participants, and so on. As we reached the final on that Sunday morning, we as a team decided it would be best if we would forgo the gold medal final and allow two teams of equal calibre to compete for the medals. Our players and parents took the news very well. We explained to our team that they have just brightened the day of 17 kids and allowed them to play for the gold. Once we returned to Airdrie each player received a token of appreciation and a letter of recognition for their hard work, dedication and sportsmanship. It’s hard not to get wrapped up in all the excitement of winning; however, we all felt we won that weekend; cruising the slopes, wiping out on the sled hill, a few frosty pints in the hot tub, hanging with friends and even sneaking in a few hockey games! That’s what it’s all about.” – Kristin Senft, parent, Atom Tier 3 Lightning

FLOORBALL?
ISN’T IT JUST
F
FLOOR HOCKEY?
loor hockey refers to a type of indoor hockey sport that derives from various hockey codes. This includes, but is not limited to, floorball, field hockey, ball hockey and roller hockey.
HISTORY The game of floorball was invented in Gothenburg, Sweden, in the early 1970s and was played for fun in schools. As the sport began to grow in popularity, formal rules were developed and floorball clubs were formed. THE IFF The International Floorball Federation (IFF) was founded in 1986 and was created mainly by people who couldn’t skate well enough to play ice hockey. However, floorball serves as an excellent complementary sport to ice hockey as it allows for the development of many similar skills. As of 2009, floorball is now played in almost 80 countries around the world, with 55 countries that are recognized members of the IFF.
FLOORBALL CANADA Floorball Canada has been a member of the IFF since 2001. FLOORBALL FACTS · Floorball uses a special lightweight stick and ball, as well as rules of play that promote less aggression than floor hockey. · Floorball does not require that you have skills relating to hockey to compete. · Floorball requires stick play to be under waist-level height. · The sport does not allow body checking. · It follows rules of play that are similar in nature to soccer whereby strategies of using the full gym to move the ball to create scoring opportunities is encouraged. · Floorball goalies are on their knees and have protected creases to prevent players from entering into their net area. · Goalies do not have a stick and can handle the ball in ways that resemble a soccer goalie. For more information on floorball, visit Hockey Canada’s website: www.hockeycanada.ca/en-ca/hockey-programs/ schools/floorball/what-is-floorball

Graduating Midgets A MESSAGE FROM THE AMHA BOARD WOW! Congratulations on graduating from minor hockey! Graduation is often a time to reflect on how much you’ve accomplished and to look forward to where you will be going. This is very true for your journey through hockey as well. Whether you have gone through minor hockey from Tykes (Timbits, U7 etc.) or started later, I am sure it has been filled with joys, like winning banners, or city championships, and hard times, like tough overtime losses or playoff losses. Where will you go from here? Will you get the opportunity to play hockey through continued education, in the juniors, or for fun with friends? I hope so! It has been an absolute pleasure to have you in our hockey family, part of Alberta Minor Hockey Association. AMHA is our athletes; it is their families; it is our volunteers, our coaches and managers; it is you. Go on to your next adventure with pride, being proud that you are what makes AMHA great. Please know that you will always have a home here in AMHA. Come back; volunteer, as a coach, on a committee, as a board member. You are always welcome! It can be so scary and exciting at the same time to move from one chapter to the next in life, but hockey has undoubtedly given you skills that will make that transition easier. Herb Brooks once said: “Great moments are born from great opportunities.” From this great moment you will have great opportunities! Congratulations, all the best to you in your future endeavors, from your hockey family!

“To watch these guys in the beginning was pure torture. They couldn’t get along or work together as a team let alone play as one. They didn’t know each other and clearly came from very different backgrounds. Watching them grow and learn together and becoming an amazing team was the highlight of the season for all of us; team members and parents both. Despite a sad and abrupt end to our season, (it) only brought these guys closer. They are best friends now who I’m sure will remain tight for many, many more years in their AMHA future!” – Aimee Avery, parent, Airdrie Lightning PeeWee RHL G team

“One of my favourite memories from this year was when I scored the first goal in our Tier 4 tournament in Rockyford. I got a pass from my centreman and I shot in the bottom left corner so hard I fell over and slid straight into the boards after seeing the puck just hit the goalie’s right pad and went in! My left winger, my center and I all remember seeing the puck push the goalie into his net!! This is one of my favourite memories of the 2019 to 2020 season.” – Nathan Yablonski, #12 Airdrie Lightning RHL B
