Jetstar - Win a year in the clouds

Several years ago at SimpliFlying, we became aware of a phenomenon called Cloud Spotting, with its own Cloud Appreciation society and conference. We advised a few partner airline clients that this could be a good starting point for a marketing campaign.

At the time no one went for it, but another carrier has since independently also identified this group and trend and developed activity around it. Namely Jetstar Australia, which has launched a ‘win a year in the clouds’ competition (a year in the clouds, being a year’s free flights).

Launched by Australian TV meteorologist Jane Bunn, the mechanic is fairly straight-forward. Australians are being asked to post their best cloud photos onto Facebook or Instagram using the hashtag #Jetstarclouds.

Gavin Pretor-Pinney, the founder of the Cloud Appreciation Society has additionally recorded a video for Jetstar Australia, promoting the art of cloud spotting, and announcing the fact that he will be judging the entries.

The mechanic is simple, the link to air travel obvious, and the prize is one that people will actively want. As a result at the time of writing there had been well over 6000 images posted to Instagram using the hashtag.
