Fly Greener with Frontier

Frontier Airlines - Green Week

Is your last name Green or Greene? If so, you would have been able to fly for free, or almost free, with US LCC Frontier Airlines in mid August, when Frontier staged ‘Green Week.’ As part of this people called Greene or Green received refunds of up to $400 when booking flights.

What’s the significance of Green? It’s of course a primary colour in the Frontier Airlines brand.

However, as a specially built micro-site explains, the campaign is also designed to show how Frontier is reducing its overall carbon footprint. As a result, Frontier flew a new A320neo from Denver to Greenville (get it?), North Carolina, calling it ‘America’s Greenest Flight.’

The micro-site lists various ways in which the airline claimsit is ‘greener’ than the competition. Some of these are of course simply a by-product of its business model.

For example, yes, Frontier does have relatively more seats on its aircraft, and that does mean that the carbon footprint per passenger is lower, but as an LCC, flying more people per aircraft is simply how it operates.

Similarly, Frontier doesn’t offer an IFE system or inflight WiFi, which reduces the weight of the aircraft. But the reality is, this is a money saving measure which happens to have environmental benefits.

However, overall the campaign and micro-site does a good job in showing how different improvements are making a difference (e.g. Frontier has stats such as that the the A320neo introduction will result in a 50% reduction in the noise footprint).

It’s a good example of how an issue like this can be communicated in clear, easy to understand language.
