Baggage Guidelines

At Air Namibia we are committed to ensuring that our passengers are re-united with their luggage at end of their journey. Given the complexity of the environment in which we operate, passengers’ luggage often gets out of our control and care, (for brief moments when they are subjected to control and handling by various agencies.) It is for this reason we request passengers to check their luggage on point of arrival (immediately after collecting their bag) to ensure that bag was not tampered with; and to report any suspected losses immediately. We request passengers not to check-in valuable items, especially those that are susceptible to theft, such as cash, jewellery, electronic devices like mobile phones, watches, sunglasses, to mention a few. In line with International Industry Conventions on passenger baggage liability, Air Namibia cannot be held liable if these valuable items are pilfered from checked-in baggage. We encourage our passengers to lock or wrap their bags where possible.

Our rules pertaining to baggage include the following We offer our passengers a generous free hand baggage allowance, with maximum weight of 10kg each, and maximum size 55 x 38 x 20 cm; plus an overcoat, an umbrella, a walking stick, a ladies hand bag, a reasonable amount of reading material, and a laptop. We also allow a fully collapsible wheelchair and/or a pair of crutches as hand baggage.

The number of visitors to the Zimbabwean side of Victoria Falls has historically been much higher than the number of tourists visiting the Zambian side. Why? Probably due to the greater development of the visitor facilities there.

The decline seems to be caused by natural and human-caused deaths, low rates of reproduction and offspring survival, and emigration. “Our

in Sossusvlei, our next quintessential landscape with beautiful dunes, as well as the world known iconic Deadvlei. Sossusvlei is an ancient river flowing into the desert, which creates a one of a kind landscape. Namibia’s desert winds have sculpted the world’s highest dunes out of red sand and it is these dunes that make the Namibian landscape like no other on earth. As it stands today, Sossusvlei is about sixty kilometres from the coast. In some places, the dunes rise out of endless fields of grass and in others; the dunes are as high as mountains. Sossusvlei also offers shifting shadows and ancient fossil trees, which allow you unparalleled creative stimulation. Here we stayed at the Sossusvlei Dune Lodge, built in an environmentally sensitive manner, primarily from wood, canvas and thatch, in an attractive ‘afro-village’ style. Sossusvlei Dune Lodge offers guests an evocative and life changing experience. Situated within the park, guests benefit from being able to reach Sossusvlei before sunrise, and stay until after sunset, and on their return after an exhilarating day, to relax in the tranquility and splendor of the Namib Desert, under the spectacular African sky.

Tips on Star Gaze or Night Photography: 1. The first step is to find dark skies Find a dark area, which is close to you, or a location you would like to explore on a future trip without any city or town lights nearby. It is imperative that the sun sets and that the moon is not in the sky when viewing the stars. It’s also best to wait an hour or two after sunset and/or moonset for maximum darkness. You will need something interesting in the foreground. It must be something that doesn’t move such as a mountain or a building 2. Find clear skies It should also be a clear night with no clouds. When the humidity is high, there is excessive water vapor in the air, which impedes the view of the night sky. 3. Selecting photography equipment ● Tripod (the lower it can go the better); ● Camera with Manual Mode that can capture in Raw; ● Wide angle Lens 10-35mm (Full Frame); ● Head light and torch for light painting; ● Remote shutter release; and ● Walking shoes. 4. Focusing your lens at night We focus at infinity (the furthest point on the horison), for nearly all of our night photos. You can lighten up your subject and also use live view to focus on your subject, for instance a tree in the foreground. 5. Selecting Exposure; Time; Aperture and ISO settings Reference the 500 Rule Chart for your exposure time. We usually use a 25-30 second one exposure for a Star trail photo. An Aperture value of f/2.8-f/4 will work very well for taking photos of the night sky, but f/2.8 is preferred. An ISO of 3600 for a F2.8 Lens and an ISO 6400 for a F4 Lens will work fine. De-noising can be done in post processing if needed.

Falling in love and being inspired by

Namibia

Xenia shares her story with us at Flamingo Magazine. Photographs by: Xenia Ivanoff-Erb

X

enia Ivanoff-Erb, was born in South Africa to a German mother

and a Don Cossack father, the well-known South African political cartoonist, singer and artist Victor Ivanoff. Her mother had worked as an advertising executive and Xenia grew up surrounded by art, and, from an early age, came to appreciate the value and beauty of design. In fact she says, “Good design and balance of composition are part of my daily well being, without them I feel lost and agitated.” She lives in Swakopmund with her husband Georg and her teenage son Michael. Her daughter Tatjana is a paramedic and her son Nikolai is a professional equestrian and is training to be a pilot, they both live in Johannesburg. After completing her schooling in Johannesburg in the mid 80’s, she went on to study a BA degree in Fine Arts at Rhodes University, Grahamstown, where she majored in Graphic Art. She admits that art for her was never a matter of “art for art sake”; it was during her studies that Xenia’s interest grew more towards commercial art and specifically towards logo and brand design. At Rhodes she also studied photography, under the guidance of the renowned photographer,

38 |

Obie Oberholtzer who was her lecturer for an entire year. However, Xenia says, “In those years photography was not deemed a “real career” and my parents were adamant, advertising was my calling.” Alongside her artistic talents, Xenia was also a successful sportswoman. She has a deep-rooted love for sports and it was due to this passion, that she was approached in the early nineties to redesign the South African national emblem of the springbok and create a new emblem namely the “Protea”.

A family affair It’s a wonderful story about a family who came to Namibia, and half a century later, are celebrating fifty years and three generations of Anton family hospitality at the well known Hotel Schweizerhaus & Café Anton in Swakopmund. By: Heidi Snyman

I

n 1954, my dad, Manfred Anton, and his mother Lisbeth immigrated to what

was then South West Africa. They had family there. Before they left Germany, my dad had secured a job as a master baker and confectioner at the Putensen Bakery, where Café Treff is today. In 1956, my mother too, left Germany, and arrived in Swakopmund. She was employed at the Strand Café by Mr. and Mrs. Schiessl. In his off time, dad baked cakes at the Strand Café... and met my mother. They married in 1958, and in 1959, I was born, and a year later, my sister Marion.

| 55

My parents dream was to own a little guest-house with a café. In 1965, they bought a piece of land from Mr. Kaiser. They didn’t have sufficient funds to purchase the ground with an old house on it, so – amazingly - my mother’s previous employer, Mr. Pruter, handed her a blank cheque with the words: ‘Mrs. Anton, you can fill in any amount!’ What employer would do that? Within a few months, my parents built the first four guest-rooms on the first floor: the Balcony Room, sea-facing; the Blue Room, with its blue curtains; and the North and East Rooms. We lived on the bottom floor, and also used the attic! As kids, we had the most enjoyable playground in this house, as it had big rooms - I have very fond memories of it. My parents believed that the house had been imported from Switzerland and that was where it had

the industry didn’t actually want women... and I wore glasses. I then applied to be an air-hostess, but was too young, so off I went to the Hotel School in Johannesburg. I reapplied for a job as an air-hostess, but was still too young even though they’d increased the age limit. They said, however, you can start now as a ground hostess and when you’re old enough, you can qualify for an air-hostess. But by the time that date arrived, I had realised it was not the ‘dream job’ I’d always thought it would be! Luckily, within a few months at South African Airways (SAA), I became Senior Ground Hostess! Three years later – at the end of 1981 - my mom became very ill, and asked me to return home to assist, as the high season was ahead. I resigned and went home! It was easy for me, as I’d grown up in the Hotel and Café, and always had to help when it became busy. That way,

much of the usual work there became second nature. In February 1982, I married André Snyman, who was then still working at SAA. He left SAA in April/May, and joined us here in the business. In 1984, Silvia was born, and in 1986, Desirée. We worked with my parents until 1990, when my parents retired. We then renovated the Café, followed by the entire Hotel. One important issue for us was the foundation of the Hospitality Association of Namibia (HAN). André - together with Jonny Hamman and three others - founded HAN in 1987. Shortly after that, André sat down with other Swakopmund Hoteliers, and HAN Coast was born, the only regional HAN subdivision which has remained active! HAN has been instrumental in achieving much for many hotels and hoteliers in Namibia, and is today one of

picture made from paper, using the quilling technique: “I had no idea what it was called, and honestly, my first attempt was really awful.” Sena explored different ways of doing this, and discovered her own style whereby she combines paper quilling and sketching. Sena described her process: “After I decide on the image, I draw a template, then decide on the colours. After this, everything is spontaneous (details within the papers, I mean). The creative process for each item changes, so preparing one piece takes about a day to complete, and this is for designs which I’ve made before. Creating a new design takes longer.” Now, Sena quills paper to express the world around her. “Everything inspires me,” she admits. “When I see a photo on Instagram, or a contest on a website or in a magazine, anything you could imagine inspires me. For example, while I was drinking my coffee the other day, I asked myself ‘Why don’t you make a coffee cup?’ and I created a small frappuccino cup that same day.” For Sena, it doesn’t have to be a particularly extraordinary item – everything can be inspiring. Like any true artist, it’s always about

style:

“That gives me a sense of freedom,” she says. “I love designing something which hasn’t been quilled by anybody else.” The strips which Sena cuts are 1cm and 2cm, distinctively wider than those used by most quillers. Quilling is an ancient paper art-form, sometimes known as paper filigree. It’s the art of taking thin strips of paper - of varying widths - rolling, gluing and shaping them into different shapes. You then take them and glue

them together to create a quilled artwork. Why is it called quilling? Because the paper used to be rolled on to feathers. Today, there are tools used instead of feathers... for example, toothpicks, needles, or indeed, any thin, round, cylindrical object will do. You can make your own tools. Sena has produced over two hundred of these quilled works, and she sells them all around the world... or else, she grins, “Sometimes a family member or friend gets one as a gift.” Lucky them. She works seven days a week at her art, but because it’s her passion, it doesn’t feel like work at all!

The GX, the way, comes with eight airbags, and the VX gets no less than ten. The 200’s heartbeat comes courtesy of a proven 4.5-litre, V8 turbo-diesel making 173 kW at 3 200rpm, and 615Nm from 1 800rpm. This runs through a six-speed automatic gearbox, and you can expect this big vehicle to lope from rest to 100km/h in 8.9 seconds, topping out at 210km/h, while sipping just 10.3 litres of diesel per 100km in the combined cycle. Get yours in a choice of nine colours, including two new hues: Sunset Dune Metallic, and Midnight Ocean Metallic. The GX model costs R850 000 and the VX costs R1 141 700. Standard equipment includes the likes of CD/radio with Bluetooth connectivity, and pliant, smooth ride quality aided and abetted by generous 245/70/16 rubbers means less operator fatigue. Safety levels also happen to be excellent by bakkie standards. All LE and LX models, and the two new Fleetside models, come standard with electronic stability control (ESC) – a feature that can be a true life-saver, as anyone who has had their bacon saved by a vehicle thus equipped will attest. And by year end ESC will be added to the single-cab high-output Fleetside, meaning that all Isuzu’s bar the two entry-level LEED (low-pressure turbo) models will pack this electronic nanny. As it is, the whole range bar those LEED versions, also packs ABS, EDB and EBA. What’s pretty cool, too, is the standard Isuzu Complete Care, as it’s known. Rhino Facts: In the late 1970s aggressive poaching took the Namibian Black Rhino to the brink of extinction. Thousands of rhino were slaughtered to satisfy the demand for fashion accessories and oriental medicines. By the early 1980s the population had plummeted from 65,000 to just 60. The ‘Rhino for Erongo’ project was established to reintroduce and conserve rhino in the Erongo region, reintroducing Black Rhino into the area after the last of its kind was caught in 1974. For every bottle of OASIS sold a contribution is made to the ‘Rhino for Erongo’ project, helping to conserve and protect these beautiful creatures.

With an amphitheatre and performance stage recently completed, and a number of trader stalls in the planning stages, the project continues to evolve in almost as impulsive a fashion as envisioned by the designers. Terrafugia TF-X Hybrid Electric Flying Car A flying car is no longer impossible in the near future. In fact, Terrafugia has made it pretty clear that they might be heading in that direction, sooner than they thought possible. The Terrafugia TF-X Hybrid Electric Flying Car is the realisation of the futuristic flying car. This project aims to bring you better personal transportation with enhanced safety, simplicity, and convenience. Operating

this

vehicle

should

statistically be safer than driving a normal car. As a futuristic vehicle, learning to operate the Terrafugia TF-X Hybrid Electric Flying Car should take an average driver no more than five hours. It should be user-friendly without any complicated navigation. The user would experience freedom in flight, by controlling the flying car in a similar way as steering a normal car. This flying car can accommodate up to four people, with a non-stop flight range of at least 500 miles. As a car, this vehicle fits into a standard single car garage, so there’s no need to worry about parking it inside your house. The TF-X would be able to take off vertically, yep, from a level clearing of at least 100ft in diameter, with electric ground drive and electric power assist. It’s a flying car! Do you have a gap? ...chances are that you do. Most people are unaware of their retirement and insurance gap. Only one in nine Namibians save for retirement in the form of a pension or provident fund. 88% will need help from the government or their family. Almost 5% of our nation is disabled. More than half not being able to find a job. FundsAtWork can assist you, as a business owner, to help your employees to close their retirement and insurance gaps. The tooth fairy won’t.

Highhumour 8 - “Trails need to be reconstructed. Please avoid building trails that go uphill.”

Namibia is a great country for camping, touring and enjoying a plethora of natural attractions. Apparently this is also true elsewhere on this dirtball we call home. We loved this feedback page that was (apparently) left on the U.S. Forest Service registration sheets - and comment cards by backpackers completing wilderness camping trips:

1 - “A small deer came into my camp and stole my bag of pickles. Is there a way I can get reimbursed? Please call.” 2 - “Escalators would help on steep uphill sections.” 3 - “Instead of a permit system or regulations, the Forest Service needs to reduce worldwide population growth to limit the number of visitors to the wilderness.”

4 - “Trails need to be wider so people can walk while holding hands.” 5 - “Ban walking sticks in the wilderness. Hikers that use walking sticks are more likely to chase animals.”

6 - “All the mile markers are missing this year.” 7 - “Found a smouldering cigarette left by a horse.”

134 |

9 - “Too many bugs, leeches, spiders and webs. Please spray the wilderness to rid the area of these pests.” 10 - “Please pave the trails so they can be ploughed of snow in the winter.” 11 - “Chair lifts need to be in some places so that we can get to the wonderful views without having to hike to them.”

Mail your submission to humor@media-namibia.com and you might become our latest high altitude joker.

Some Camping Tips: 1 - When using a public camp ground, a tuba and an electric guitar placed on your picnic table, will keep the camp sites on either side vacant.

2 - Acupuncture was invented by a camper who found a porcupine in his sleeping bag. 3 - When smoking a fish, never inhale. 4 - Lint from your navel makes a handy fire starter. Warning: Remove lint from navel before applying the match. 5 - You’ll never be lost if you remember that moss always grows on the north side of your compass.

6 - You can duplicate the warmth of a down-filled bedroll by climbing into a plastic garbage bag with several geese.

The loaded mini-van pulled into the only remaining campsite. Four children leaped from the vehicle and began feverishly unloading gear and setting up the tent. The boys rushed to gather firewood, while the girls and their mother set up the camp stove and cooking utensils. A nearby camper marvelled to the youngsters’ father, “That, sir, is some display of teamwork.” The father replied, “I have a system — no one goes to the bathroom until the camp is set up.”

8 - A two-man pump-up tent apparently does not include two men - or a pump. 9 - You can start a fire without matches by eating Kalahari chillies, then breathing on a pile of dry sticks. 10 - The guitar of the noisy teenager at the next campsite makes excellent kindling.

7 - When camping, always wear a long-sleeved shirt. It gives you something to wipe your nose on. | 135
