Dear Esteemed Travellers, We shared with you earlier this year, our vision for the current year . Air Namibia will indulge in some sincere soul searching and further refinement of our service and product offerings. To this end, we have undergone a “mystery shopper” assessment of our on-board services. This exercise whilst being a daunting task, was undertaken to ensure that any pointers stemming from the outcome of the assessment, will be embraced to ensure that we continue to better the on-board experience. As was also previously stated, we will be bringing more Namibian content and products to be part of your travel experience with us. On the Domestic and Regional routes, in 2014 we added local culinary delicacies to the menu, which has received positive feedback from many passengers. In the same vein, locally made articles, will be considered in the review of on-board products to be used, including the convenience pouches for the Business Class. Please watch this space as we continue the roll out of locally produced

items. The travel experience focus for this month is promoting Air Namibia’s flight to Rundu as a destination and Popa Falls Camp (which is from the stable of Namibia Wildlife Resorts) as a beautiful resort to visit. During the month of May, we shall have special fares to and from Rundu. The Popa Falls Camp is a gateway to the north-eastern corner of Namibia and home to perennial rivers, magnificent indigenous woodlands, riverine forests, floodplains and reed-lined channels. The camp is located on the Kavango River, and the falls are accessible by foot from here. The falls, in fact, are not falls as one may expect from its name. Instead, they are a series of cascades created naturally over time by the running river, which splits the rock and forms a vast network of river channels. Local and international visitors will enjoy a mesmerizing experience. As we continue to strive to be an African carrier which can hold its own

amongst the best in the world in terms of Safety Standards – Air Namibia wishes to inform its flying public as well as all its stakeholders, that it has achieved the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) Third Country Operator (TCO) Authorization. The TCO Authorization is issued after EASA has conducted a thorough and rigorous assessment of the airlines policies, procedures, management, flight operations, crew training, aircraft maintenance standards and airport operations and found these to meet EU standards. This means the authorization was issued as testimony to the high safety and operational standards of Air Namibia, and in fact means the airline is now permitted to fly into any EU airport provide it has the traffic rights to do so. To exploit the opportunity presented by the newly acquired EASA TCO Authorization, Air Namibia has embarked on a strategic review of the airline’s route network to broaden its long-haul routes to include other European destinations.

Thank you for flying with us; you remain Air Namibia’s much treasured assets. We look forward to welcoming you back on-board soon! |5

Standard Bank ready to support the mining sector Standard Bank has a rich pedigree in the mining industry. As a Bank well-versed in serving the mining sector in Africa, Standard Bank has been framing its products to ensure that the country has more bankable projects that can take the country to new economic heights. The Bank has been ready to finance large-scale mining projects, understanding that the projects require big chunks of financing. One recent key highlight has been the co-financing of Debmarine Namibia’s latest sampling and exploration vessel (approximately N$1.8 billion). “Like many large investment banks, we work with the government, corporates and financial clients in multiple sectors and geographies. Unlike most, we are first and foremost Namibian; we have a long, proud history that gives us a unique depth of expertise and breadth of footprint. We are set apart by our scale, by the strength of our regional and international connections, and by our ability to innovate. Our track record shows our success in building businesses across Namibia, especially in natural resources, mining, power and infrastructure sectors, ” thus Standard Bank’s Head of Client Coverage in Corporate and Investment Banking Division, Adri Spangenberg.

tbwa.com.na

While this year may be a challenging one for the global mining industry, mining prospects remain Standard Bank’s strength and passion for Africa as a region. And so when clients speak with Standard Bank, they are actually having a conversation with an entire regional regional backbone. We are always ready to finance business ventures with an established business plan and viable outlook. Exploration projects, however, have a very unique business structure in that income streams tend to be highly speculative and dependent on what’s in the ground and the interested extraction counterparty. For this reason, most exploration projects are funded by owner equity or by sizeable minerals extraction firms. Mining is a risky business that is influenced by several factors, including uncertainties in commodity prices on the world markets. However in terms of the outlook, commodity prices are not anticipated to exhibit material improvement, impacting on sector valuations and the ability to raise financing. But Standard Bank Group research shows that African mining remains underexplored.

122 |

Adri Spangenberg, Head: Client Coverage, Standard Bank Corporate and Investment Banking

In 2013, African exploration accounted for 17% of the worldwide exploration budget despite the fact that the continent holds more than 30% of the world’s mineral resources. So amid a more sober outlook, the prospects for mining in Africa remain essentially intact over the medium term. And although cautious, our appetite for mining projects is quite strong. What financing products is Standard Bank offering to medium and large scale exploration and mining firms? We offer solutions in Advisory, Capital Markets, Debt and Transactional Services. All these capabilities bring together complementary skills from corporate finance and balance sheet banking to geology and mining engineering. And with our global footprint, our transactional banking network is able to provide our clients with a more seamless solution for their day-to-day operations.

Debmarine Namibia’s latest sampling and exploration vessel (approximately N$1.8 billion) financed by Standard Bank Namibia

How do you convince a local miner to access project financing from your Bank, other than foreign financial institutions, understanding that it is always cheaper to borrow from Banks in foreign countries where interest rates are relatively lower? This question symbolises our strength as a regional bank. We are able to finance miners on both local and foreign exchange expenditure needs within our integrated Group structure. How will Standard Bank contribute to the growth of the mining sector in Namibia? Because of our history as a mining bank and our enduring expertise in this sector, we work to understand our clients‘ individual requirements. We coordinate and execute our clients’ financing and banking requirements across Africa and emerging global markets. Our highly regarded commodity and currency trading desks offer 24-hour trading capabilities to support price-risk management and hedging strategies. In addition, we carry out in-depth analyses of commodity trends and stay on top of the latest developments in the mining and metals industry. We continue to play a leading role in arranging facilities for many of the most significant mining projects in Africa and other key emerging markets. Our comprehensive suite of financing and advisory solutions for the mining and metals sector includes: • Project finance • Corporate finance advisory solutions

• Working capital facilities • Bridging finance • Acquisition finance • Inventory financing • Structured trade and commodity finance • Commodity price risk management solutions • Foreign exchange and interest rate hedging • Global transactional banking services In the meantime, we continue to participate in dialogues that promote sustainable business and growth in the mining sector. Standard Bank Namibia is confident that the mining sector promises positive growth opportunities for the country, despite a downturn in the global mining industry. Mining prospects, however, look bright for Namibia as the country is currently the world’s fourth largest producer of uranium and is expected to overtake Niger and Australia by 2017 through the commencement of the Husab mine production. As Standard Bank, our eminence talks to financing power and infrastructure, mining and metals, oil and gas, and other key sectors such as fast-moving consumable goods, real estate and telecommunication. As the world looks to emerging markets to power growth, Namibia is taking its rightful place at the heart of this.

Namibian candidates have benefitted from the programme that extends field guide training, provided by EcoTraining in association with the Field Guide Association of South Africa (FGASA). The initiative comes at a time when Namibia’s travel and tourism industry is set to significantly increase its contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP). According to the World Travel and Tourism Council, travel and tourism accounted for 14,9% of GDP in 2014, a contribution that is expected to rise to 21,6% by 2025. The growth of the sector will also result in more jobs. The council anticipates that by 2025, it will represent 25% of the country’s total employment. Hardie Basson - marketing manager for Amarula’s parent company Distell, in Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland - said the building of rural skills to support eco-tourism was Sheldin Naruseb, a student from the Erindi Private Game Reserve, explains to his fellow students how to analyse elephant dung.

The Amarula Field Guide Scholarship programme is a very important part of the work of the trust. “Candidates with the potential to develop their careers, who are currently working in entry-level positions at game lodges and private reserves, are chosen by their employers for the project, he explained. When they are promoted after undergoing the course, their vacant positions create employment opportunities for others. The latest Namibian course involved 8 candidates from 6 game lodges and private reserves. Students were taught about the natural, physical environment and ecology, with an accent on climate, biomes and diversity. Some of the areas they

Photographer of the year contest results 2016 These stunning images are the winners from the Underwater Photographer of the year 2016 contest. Italian Davide Lopresti, beat entrants from 54 different countries to be named Underwater Photographer of the Year for his image “Gold”.

Underwater Photographer of the year. Overall Title Winner. Also winner of Category 2, International Macro. Lopresti’s winning picture is artistic portrait of a spiny seahorse taken in Trieste, Italy. He set out to photograph the seahorses to celebrate their return to areas of the Mediterranean that have been protected from destructive fisheries, such as trawling. Artistically and technically impressive, Lopresti’s photo combines panning and a long exposure, which create painterly textures from the seabed. He then used a flash restricted to a spotlight to pick out the details of the seahorse. It is simply “beautiful and creative, a very worthy overall winner,” commented chair of the judging panel, underwater photographer and marine biologist Dr Alexander Mustard.

here were also categories solely for photos taken in UK waters. The full results are listed below. Three esteemed judges; Alex Mustard, Martin Edge and Peter Rowlands had the pleasure of going through the entries to select the award winners. “It was astounding and humbling seeing the quality,” said Alex Mustard, chair of the judging panel and the driving force behind UPY. “It is a tough job distilling them down to the very best. Every single image that was placed is an amazing moment from the underwater world. And many that nearly made the collection, were almost as stunning. There has never been such strength in depth in underwater photography.”

“Selecting the winners is enjoyable, but also pressured. Nobody’s work is judged as meticulously as the judges! We take the process very seriously, bringing all the judges together in one room, all looking at and discussing the images face to face over two days,” said Mustard. “Many competitions are judged online these days, with judges never meeting and I think that our old school approach really strikes a chord with the entrants, who appreciate the effort we put into evaluating their images. I think that is a big reason why we attract entries from underwater photographers in 54 different countries. “ Comments on the two awarded images by Martin Edge, judge of UPY and author of “The Underwater Photographer”.

“Gold”: Blue surrounds the entire four corners, which helps to keep the eye of the viewer firmly focused on the detail of the seahorse. The eye cannot escape the frame; it continues to rotate in circles. Complementary colours of blue and yellow are entirely responsible for the ‘wow factor’, which this image has from first viewing. “Catshark Supernova”: This image grew on me through the judging. Day one, it was all about the silhouette of the shark within the egg. By day two it was the balanced shape and ethereal light of the silhouette. Its masterstroke is to shape the backlighting in the form of wings. Outstanding.

Runner Up. Category 3. International Wrecks Copyright: Anders Nyberg / UPY 2016 Nationality: Sweden Image caption: Truck Parking Country taken: Egypt, Red Sea Location: SS Thistlegorm Camera make: Nikon D800 Lens: Tokina 10-17mm at 17mm ISO: 320 Aperture: f/10 Shutter: 1/25 Lighting used: Inon Z240 and 3 off camera strobes, Inon and Ikelite Housing : Hugyfot D800

Back story: I really like the SS Thistlegorm and can not get enough of this beautiful wreck. What makes the wreck so unique is the great opportunity to create stunning wreck images, especially if you add one or more off camera strobes to create more depth in the image. For lighting, my buddy and I placed the 3 off camera strobes, one strobe in each truck and a torch in the engine compartment in the first truck. I could easily spend many dives entirely inside this captivating wreck.

Judge’s Comment: This picture sparked an interesting debate in the judging room: can a photographer show off too much in a competition?! Joking aside, these Ford trucks inside the Thistlegorm wreck are in almost total darkness and 25 metres of water. This is not an easy place to produce an image that uses four separate off-camera light sources (and two on camera). More importantly Anders has produced a striking and well-crafted composition with the row of repeating windows, the sprinkling of fish and the blue opening in the background providing depth and a feeling of place. - Alex Mustard

Runner Up Category 4, International Behaviour Copyright: Alejandro Prieto / UPY 2016 Nationality: Mexico Image caption: What Feeds Beneath Country taken: Mexico Location: Todos Santos Camera make: Canon 5D Mark II Lens: Sigma 15mm Fisheye ISO: 200 Aperture: f13 Shutter: 1/160 Lighting used: Sea & Sea Housing : Subal CD5DII

Back story: I entered the cold November the water to photograph a pair of humpback whales which passed away very quickly, swimming back to the boat I saw a small moving object in front of me; it was a Hawaiian petrel submerging its head to feed on the tiny crustaceans. Under normal circumstances as you get close it will fly away, but surprisingly instead of this it just kept feeding in-front of me. By approaching very slowly I was able to get close from beneath, thankfully it stayed there for a few moments allowing me to capture this behaviour. The Hawaiian petrel is a species classified as endangered by the IUCN.

Judge’s Comment: It’s common for sea birds to join in with the bait balls and on this occasion a beautiful portrait was created by the author. The bright tones within Snell’s window give an ethereal look to this Petrel submerging to feed. The dark tones outside Snell frame the composition and keeps the eye of the viewer within the frame. The result is a beautiful and original image. – Martin Edge

Back story: French Polynesia is an amazing place for nature lovers. In the lagoon of Moorea I was snorkeling with an abundance of marine life, most notably these black tip sharks. The topography of the mountains in the background inspired me to realize this half and half photo.

Judge’s Comment: If ever there was an image that captured ‘excitement’ it is this perfect combination of frozen movement, split level scene setting and great composition. The reflected surface lighting on the sharks and the sand lifts it to another level. - Peter Rowlands

Back story: Callistoctopus macropus, also known as white-spotted octopus is a species found in shallow areas of the Mediterranean Sea. The shot is made in a little harbour near Sorrento by night. When I took this shot I was very close to the octopus and, perhaps annoyed by the strobes, it jumped to attack the camera, so i had this strange position of the octopus just just before it grabbed with its tentacles housing. I am always very fascinated by cephalopods and the way they interact with the underwater photographer.

Back story: This delightful little guy was on a strand of kelp at 15 metres in a gulley of the South Coast of the UK. It was an emotional experience all round. Judges Comments: Martin Edge. What first attracted me to this image in the judging room was the angle of view. ‘Straight On’. The feeling of depth from front to back comes about as a result of the pin sharp foreground with the soft bokeh towards the background. Notice how the author has left just enough space at the bottom of the frame for the slug to swim into. The traditional compositional technique for this type of image is usually a slightly downward angle but this ultra eye level ‘take’ is something to think about the next time you are shooting a similar subject.

Pier Mane from South Africa was named as Up & Coming Underwater Photographer of the Year for his image “Three Pillars” photographed in the Bahamas. “Shark dives are exciting, but that makes them one of the hardest places to think as a photographer,” commented Mustard. “Pier deserves particular praise in producing such a powerful composition, when most of us would have our eyes and lenses fixed only on the sharks.”

Most Promising British Underwater Photographer 2016 Title Winner, Also Runner Up in Category 5, Up & Coming Worldwide The title of Most Promising British Underwater Photographer, 2016, was awarded to Marty Engels Dunmore from Suffolk for her image “Fired Up” taken on the Kittiwake wreck in Grand Cayman. Preparation paid off for Engels Dunmore “it isn’t easy to produce a unique image of this well loved wreck. This picture was planned long before I’d ever seen the wrecks with my own eyes. Deep inside I found this wonderful old machine, and placed my dive torch inside, as if the fire was still burning.”

Back story: Our skipper Charles Hood had attracted five hungry Blue sharks to his boat by submerging a sack of frozen rotten fish to create a tempting downstream trail of smelly oils and particles. I’d already captured a few shots that I was happy with by leaning over the side of the boat so decided it was time to get in the water with the sharks. The dramatic atmosphere of this image was produced using a technique I learned from Dr Alex Mustard, who in turn had been inspired by an epic shark photograph by Tobi Bernhards. It involves using a relatively slow exposure with a bright flash at the beginning to capture the sharp elements then quickly panning the camera in front of the subject to create the naturally lit blur behind it. Doing this with the camera on a slight angle added another level of complexity but after many failed attempts I eventually got the shot that I?d visualised.

Back story: Living in the midlands I am not blessed with living near the coast so often spend my weekends at local inland dive sites. I think the photographic potential is often overlooked with inland sites, so I attempt to take images that showcase these sites in the best possible way. This particular wreck is a Dickens Class Harbour Minesweeper, built in 1944 specifically to clear mines in and around harbour entrances during WWII. I particularly liked the angle of the wreck, and felt it could make an interesting composition as the perimeter of the wreck leads the eye in and out of the image. Using a wide angle lens I got close to enhance the size of the wreck. My dive buddy kindly offered to model for interest and scale using a dive torch. I processed the image using a monochrome finish which I feel lends itself well to the tonal range and also to add atmosphere to the image.

Back story: In the summer of 2015 Scottish Natural Heritage a Dive Team conducted site monitoring of Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) which included North Rona which is where this image was taken. We had come to the end of a dive inside a cave; just before we reached the surface we noticed an unusual amount of zooplankton which had become trapped inside the cave entrance. We then spotted a couple of tiny, post-larval monkfish feeding on the plankton, something none of us had ever seen. Getting an in-focus shot with my macro lens was easier said than done with prevailing swell, but I managed a few before the boat came to pick us up.

Judges Comments: The most remarkable looking creature I have ever seen photographed in British waters. This juvenile monkfish doesn’t even look like it comes from our planet, let alone our shores. An amazing subject photographed flawlessly, it is definitely one of the most memorable pictures in this year’s collection. - Alex Mustard

Off the beaten track Tamasa Trading continues to take our Flamingo readers on their exclusive boutique wine route, we head out on the Old Paarl Road to find a little known wine estate that is Hoopenburg. By: Phil Ruimte Photographs by: Mark Pettipher and supplied.

Y

ou may have come across the Hoopenburg wine range in a boutique wine shop, or a select restaurant perhaps, and then again, you may have tasted it at the Real Wine Extravaganza in Windhoek; whichever way, the wine will not have disappointed you. Anton Beukes – General manager and all round marketer met me in the tasting room on the estate and promptly took me outside to give us a little background on the estate. Situated between Stellenbosh, Paarl and Durbanville, is Muldersvlei, also known as the Great Simonsberg. Here you will find Hoopenburg Estate, with its picturesque views – depending on which way you are facing – your panorama will be the Simonsberg, and following it round, right across to the distant Table Mountain and Durbanville Hills. Hoopenburg Estate was originally part of a larger Hoopenberg farm Anton explains. Hoopenberg with an ‘e’ was a pastoral farm made up of a number of title plots - the Hoopenburg (with a ‘u’) Vineyards is made up of two of the title deeds. The Schmitz family from Germany, bought the title deeds in 1992 and proceeded to plant bush vines. Hoopenburg Vineyards used to be the only wine estate in South

Africa where 100% of the vineyard comprised bush vines, however in recent years, Anton has begun to pull out those labour intensive vines and has planted varieties that are more suited to trellising and mechanisation. When Anton joined – some seven years ago – the estate had 35 hectares under bush vine. Anton went on to say, where the various varietals were only producing one and half to two tonnes of grapes, this proved to be economically prohibitive. Further more, the original planting was mainly Merlot, which made up about 1/3rd of the estate’s produce. After discussion with Helanie Olivier – the estates’ wine maker – Anton is grubbing out the older and under producing ‘bush vines’ and replacing them with trellised cultivars: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Merlot and Sauvignon. He is trying to find a formula that will produce wines that are more in demand.

The Terrior and Cellar “At Hoopenburg, we follow and believe in the principle of farming as environmentally friendly as possible and responsibly look after our terrior,” says Anton, “We have taken a decision to convert some

| 37

Anton is happy with his wines, “I can drink any of our wines.”

50 year old Anton went the traditional viticulture education route – he went to Stellenbosch – where he obtained a Bsc in viticulture oenology. There were only eight students, who broke down to only three who went into the industry as people who were not originally from estate owners. Anton was at Môreson in Franschhoek for 13 years, and then onto Seidelberg for a short spell before joining Hoopenburg. Anton’s decicision to join Hoopenburg was based on many factors; among them was that he wanted to have something new as a challenge, also he was able to live outside of the estate.

of our vineyards into the rest of the estate to strict integrated wine production standards.” The terrior is nourished by pure underground water. These good soils, combined with a moderate climate, cooled by afternoon breezes that sweep across the vlei, makes it possible for Hoopenburg to achieve top quality grapes. “Our wine making process compliments the grapes’ natural potential,” says Anton, “All our grapes are handpicked and sorted to ensure

that only the best berries are chosen to be used for the juice extraction.” “Fermentation takes place, mainly in stainless steel tanks, but some in open casks, after which the wine is aged in French Oak barrels,” Anton goes on to explain, “On average, in a good year, we produce some 15,000 cases, 180,000 bottles; ideally I’d like to be producing 240,000 bottles a year though.” “We produce three ranges of wine; Hoopenburg Integer, Hoopenburg Estate and The Guru.”

Hoopenburg Integer “The unique character of South African vineyards is the diversity in our soils and the micro climate of each vineyard. Non is truer at Hoopenburg; we too have different soil types and areas in our 35 hectares” says Anton proudly; “with the Hoopenburg Integer range we select the grapes that will give you the unique tasting experience of the cultivar and the terrior.” There are five varieties to choose from in this range; Integer Cabernet Sauvignon, Integer Red blend, Integer Chardonnay and the Integer Cap Classique.

The Hoopenburg Estate As with the Hoopenburg Integer range, the Hoopenburg Estate range also captures the flavour of the fruit of each cultivar. These wines are matured

in barrels for up to twelve months before the start of the selection blending process. By far the estate’s largest range of wines, this range consists of: Hoopenburg Sauvignon Blanc, Hoopenburg Chardonnay, Hoopenburg Rosé, Hoopenburg Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon, Hoopenburg Shiraz, Hoopenburg Cabernet Sauvignon and the Hoopenburg Merlot.

The Guru This range is aimed at the ‘lifestyle’ wine drinking market. These wines are created so that they are easily accessible, and will be enjoyed by ‘new’ wine drinkers as well as the more seasoned, yet uncomplicated wine drinker. There are two wines in this range, the Guru Merlot and the Guru Sauvignon Blanc.

HOOPENBURG ROSÉ For each wine on the farm we select the grapes best suited for the style of wine we would like to produce. Some of the older Cabernet Sauvignon blocks have been known for lots of fruit but lacking in the colour intensity sought in the red wines. These are the blocks are harvested to make the Rosé. Freshness and fruit is important for this wine. Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from the farm. VINIFICATION After minimum skin contact the wine was cold fermented in stainless steel tanks.

HOOPENBURG CABERNET SAUVIGNON The grapes from this wine come solely from 15 year old Hoopenburg bush vines. VINIFICATION The grapes were picked at 23.5° balling. They were de-stemmed but not crushed to preserve the fruit. The grapes were fermented for 3 weeks on the skins before being pressed and laid to rest in French oak barrels - 20% new and the balance went into 2nd and 3rd fill. Here the malolactic fermentation occurred. The wine was lightly fined and filtered before being bottled

WINEMAKER’S TASTING NOTE Nose: A delightfully bright and cheerful wine with notes of strawberry and Turkish delight. Palate: Clean acidity and a crisp dry finish.

WINEMAKER’S TASTING NOTE Nose: Typical black current nose with a hint of minerality. Medium bodied with hint of well integrated wood. Palate: Fresh springbok liver, black pepper an open fire and a crisp Karoo night has imprinted this wine to memory.

Technical Analysis Alcohol 12.0 % RS 2.4g/l TA 5.2g/l pH 3.24

Technical Analysis Alcohol 14.0 % RS 2.1g/l TA 5.8g/l pH 3.40

HOOPENBURG SHIRAZ

The total production of this wine comes solely from the eleven year old bush vines on Hoopenburg’s 35 ha farm.

VINIFICATION The grapes were picked at a ripe 24° balling late February 2008. They were fermented on the skins totaling 3 weeks. The grapes were then pressed off, with the wine going into French oak barrels for malolactic fermentation to occur. Here the wine was aged for 24 months in 2nd and 3rd fill barrels. The wine was then lightly filtered and bottled.

VINIFICATION The grapes were harvested at a modest 24° balling, and then crushed and de-stemmed. Fermentation lasted sixteen days in stainless steel tanks, pressing occurred on day seventeen, with the wine ageing for twenty months in French Oak barrels (20% new). A minimal filtration was done before being bottled

Technical Analysis Alcohol 14.0 % RS 3.6g/l TA 6.4g/l pH 3.41

This is the only variety that is not grown on Hoopenburg. The grapes for this wine are sourced only from the coolest slopes in the Western Cape, enabling only the best Sauvignon grape flavours to be released into the wine. VINIFICATION The grapes were harvested by hand earlier this year into small 20kg cases. The grapes were then transported in the cool of the morning to the Hoopenburg cellar. Here they were hand tipped into the press for a long three hour whole bunch pressing session. After this the juice was cold fermented for 3 weeks in stainless steel tanks. Once dry the wine was racked off its ferment lees and aged for a 6 months before being bottled.

HOOPENBURG MERLOT

The grapes that this wine is produced from come from a single block of 10 year old bush vines on Hoopenburg.

INTEGER CHARDONNAY

HOOPENBURG PINOTAGE These grapes were selected from a high lying vineyard overlooking False Bay and the Stellenbosch hills. VINIFICATION The picking of these grapes were done when the grapes were at a ripe 25° balling. Grapes were harvest in the earlier part of the morning to preserve freshness and fruit by the time we reach the cellar. The Pinotage berries were gently crushed and de-stemmed into and open fermenter where it was cold macerated for 7 days before fermentation started. The wine was then pressed and laid down to rest in French Oak barrels for ten months. No racking occurred to limit oxidation. Finally the wine was racked into a tank. No fining occurred and a very coarse filtration was done, so as not to damage the fruit.

HOOPENBURG CHARDONNAY The grapes in this wine come solely from the thirteen year old bush vines surrounding the cellar. VINIFICATION The grapes were picked at 23.5° balling. The grapes were hand-tipped directly into the press without any crushing or de-stemming. Pressing of the grapes then took place for three hours, with the juice being naturally settled overnight. The following day a small percentage (5%) was put into French oak barrels, with the majority going into stainless steel. Fermentation took three weeks to finish. The wine was then immediately racked and left for twelve months to age on the fine lees. The barrel fraction was then blended with the fruity tank component and bottled with a light filtration. WINEMAKER’S TASTING NOTE This Chardonnay is produced to be an elegant, medium bodied wine with an abundance of tropical fruit and lime flavours. An elegant style of wine, with just a touch of French oak on the palate. This wine has a lovely, fresh citrus character with hints of grapefruit and a pinch of creaminess. Technical Analysis Alcohol 12.34 % RS 2.1g/l TA 5.5g/l pH 3.41

HOOPENBURG CHENIN BLANC The grapes for this wine come from Stellenbosch. VINIFICATION The grapes were picked at 22.5° balling and handtipped directly into the press without any crushing or de-stemming. Pressing of the grapes then took place for three hours, with the juice being naturally settled overnight. Fermentation took three weeks to finish. The wine was then immediately racked and left for a couple of months to age on the fine lees and bottled with a light filtration.

WINEMAKER’S TASTING NOTE A lovely summer wine with a full-bodied fruity palate and notes of greengages and apples and a crisp finish. A versatile companion, this wine is at its best with seafood, light meats and salads. Technical Analysis Alcohol 13.09 % RS 2.5g/l TA 6.0g/l pH 3.45

WINEMAKER’S TASTING NOTE Nose: Upfront aromas of strawberries and raspberries, with subtle hints of coffee and chocolate. Palate: Medium bodied. Fresh and fruity, along with a very fine grained mid palate tannin. food suggestion will range from Springbok to Carpaccio and salads.

The fruit for this Chardonnay comes from one of the oldest Chardonnay blocks on the farm. VINIFICATION Two pickings were done for this vintage, a quarter was picked at 22° balling with the balance at 23.5° balling. The bunches were whole bunch pressed for 3 hours, settled naturally for 12 hours over night, then transferred to French oak for fermentation. Once completed the wine was aged on full ferment lees for 12 months with no malolactic, minimal battonage and no racking. A barrel selection was then done to make up the blend. 35% new, 30% 2nd fill and 35% 3rd fill. WINEMAKER’S TASTING NOTE Nose: Complex, fresh, apricot and citrus with a subtle hint of oak vanilla flavours. Palate: Round soft bodied, balanced with lingering limey texture rounded up with integrated oak. Technical Analysis Alcohol 13.5 % RS 2.5g/l TA 5.0g/l pH 3.45

HOOPENBURG PINOT NOIR

This wine originates from a three hectare block of fourteen year old bush vines next to the cellar. VINIFICATION There were two pickings this year, one at 22° balling (50%) and the balance at 23.5° balling. Both of these were done before any summer heat waves, thus preserving the freshness of the wine. The fragile Pinot Noir berries were gently handled and fermented for thirteen days on the skins. The wine was then pressed and laid down to rest in French Oak barrels for twelve months. No racking occurred to limit oxidation. Finally the wine was racked into a tank. No fining occurred and a very coarse filtration was done, so as not to damage the fruit. WINEMAKER’S TASTING NOTE Nose: Upfront aromas of strawberries and raspberries, with subtle hints of flowers, spice and farm aromas. Palate: Medium bodied. Fresh and fruity, along with a very fine grained mid palate tannin, allowing it to compliment a variety of food types ranging from carpaccio and salads, to most heavy meat dishes. INTEGER CAP CLASSIQUE

INTEGER RED BLEND

The fruit for the Syrah was selected from the rows of vines that showed the most fruit flavour uniformity. The Mouvedre and Carignan were selected from bush vines on farms in the Swartland region.

WINEMAKER’S TASTING NOTE This is a classic Rhone style blend with lots of depth on the pallet with spice and black berry on the nose. Nose: Mulberries and whiffs of cinnamon, dried herbs and liquorice with very subtle spices in the background. Palate: Forward fruit at first, structured midpalate, with lovely elegance, finishing with silky savoury tannins. The wine has a sinewy strength to keep it in perfect shape for ±5 years. Technical Analysis Alcohol 14.80 % RS 1.8g/l TA 5.9g/l pH 3.60

INTEGER CABERNET SAUVIGNON The fruit for this Cabernet Sauvignon come from solely from 15 year old Hoopenburg bush vines on the farm. VINIFICATION The grapes were picked at 23° balling. They were de-stemmed but not crushed to preserve the fruit. The grapes were fermented for 3 weeks on the skins before being pressed and laid to rest in new French oak barrels for 12 months, then 2nd fill for a further 18 months. Here the malolactic fermentation occurred. The wine was lightly fined and filtered before being bottled. WINEMAKER’S TASTING NOTE The typical blackcurrants and prunes, sprinkling of mixed dry herb combined with a sleek and elegant structure makes this an old world South African Cabernet Sauvignon. An alcohol of around the 13 % makes helps to unhide more of the offerings this wine. Technical Analysis Alcohol 13.0 % RS 1.0g/l TA 7.0g/l pH 3.63

The fruit for the wine were all from our own vineyards at Hoopenburg. VINIFICATION Grapes for this wine were harvested at 19/19.5° balling. We believe that we should harvest slightly riper than our European colleagues when it comes to South African MCC. This ensures that we do not only get the fresh and crisp taste we are looking for in our bubbles but also the flavour of nice ripe Granny Smith Apples. A second component of this wine is harvest a lot riper and matured in barrels for 11 month before blended back just before the secondary fermentation is started in the bottle. Disgorging of this wine is done after 15 to 18 months on the lease.

VINIFICATION Picked ripe at 25.5° balling the grapes were de-stemmed, without crushing and tipped into an open tank under carbon dioxide blanket. The grapes were cold soaked for roughly ten days until the natural yeast started to ferment the sugars. The wine finished fermentation on the skins, with punch downs and pump overs 4 times a day. The wine was then left for a further week on the skins stabilizing the tannins (totaling 30 days) before being pressed directly into barrels. Here the wine underwent Malolactic fermentation in 40% new and 60% 2nd and 3rd fill French oak barrels. The wine was aged for 18 months before being blended and bottled with a very coarse filtration. Blend of 36% Syrah, 36 % Mourvedre and 28% Carignan

THE GURU SAUVIGNON BLANC This is the only variety that is not grown on Hoopenburg. The grapes for this wine are sourced only from the coolest slopes in the Western Cape, enabling only the best Sauvignon grape flavours to be released into the wine.

WINEMAKER’S TASTING NOTE A typical champagne colour, with a very fine, lively mousse. The nose has Granny Smith apple fruit complemented by yeasty dough and biscuit aromas. The palate is as lively, with a creamy balanced finish. Hoopenburg MCC will complement wide range foods from cheese, seafood, salads and pastries.

VINIFICATION The grapes were harvested by hand earlier in the year into small 20kg cases. WINEMAKER’S TASTING NOTE Nose: Expect gooseberry, passion fruit and a touch of greenness. Palate: Good balance of fruit and acidity on the mid palate. Great with crayfish, crab curries and Asian food. Technical Analysis Alcohol 13.5% RS 3.5g/l TA 5.6g/l pH 3.4

Technical Analysis Alcohol 12.5 % RS 1.9g/l TA 6.9g/l pH 3.0

Simply mmmarvelous BMW's blisteringly brilliant M2 Coupe is everything a pocket rocket should be, writes an enchanted JAMES SIDDALL...

50 |

James Siddall

| 51

I

t is agile. Astoundingly agile. It is blisteringly quick by class standards. Actually, make that by almost any standards. And it is entirely covetable. It is BMW's all-new M2 Coupe. A car that BMW – a company not given to wild flights of hyperbole – quite simply says “sets a fresh benchmark for dynamic potency and agility in the compact high-performance sports car segment.”

52 |

At this Bavarian’s heart is a new, six-cylinder in-line engine – which, of course, provides all the stirring, vaguely feline acoustics that BMW sixes have long been so famous for. And with M Twin Power Turbo technology, this gem of a three-litre power plant puts down 272kW at 6 500rpm and 465Nm of torque. Or up to 500Nm in short bursts under over boost. Its performance statistics

make for riveting reading. With the optional seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission (M-DCT) and Launch Control it will howl from zero to 100km/h in just 4.3 seconds. And let us just pause to remember that not very long that was the sort of acceleration that exotic supercars with price tags in the millions were turning in. Top speed is electronically limited to 250km/h. Yet with its M-DCT

transmission, fuel consumption in the combined cycle is pegged at a rather reasonable 7.9 litres per 100km. Its styling – muscular yet purposeful – entirely echoes the ethos and ability of this lightweight, rear-wheel-drive rocket, from the low front apron to the M-specific twintailpipe exhaust system to the 19inch aluminium wheels in familiar M double-spoke design. So does the interior. And ensconced in the cabin – no, make that cockpit – there's little doubt that you are in one of BMW's fabled M cars, what with lashings of Alcantra, sports seats, and an M sports steering wheel and an M gearshift lever. And the handling! With the lightweight aluminium front and rear axles from the BMW M3/M4 models, those forged aluminium wheels with mixed-size tyres, M Servotronic steering with two settings, and suitably gripping M compound brakes, the car is a track demon – as we discovered on the recent launch. Plus, as BMW points out, when the Dynamic Stability Control system’s M Dynamic Mode (MDM) is activated, controlled drifting of this machine

is entirely within the realms of the possible. On a racetrack of course! It is also well-specced and wellequipped, this car – which is the direct successor to the 1 Series M Coupe. In fact, besides brimming with technology and creature comforts, it is perfectly tractable and tame – and entirely useable as a daily driver. Tap into its dark side, however, and the M2 is intoxicating, addictive and enthralling all at once, with the years of motor racing

experience built up by the BMW M engineers shining through. You'll pay in the region of N$791 000 for the six-speed manual, and N$841 000 for the 7-Speed M-DCT model. And while it would be glib to pretend that that is not a substantial outlay, it suddenly seems rather reasonable taking into account the extraordinary levels of engineering apparent here – plus the fact that even in the glittering firmament of BMW M cars, this is a veritable jewel.

Beamer brilliance As it celebrates its centenary, BMW is in brilliant shape – and so is its iconic 3 Series, writes JAMES SIDDALL...

54 |

I

t is one hundred years since Bavarian Motor Works, to give BMW its full name, was founded. And to try and encapsulate the highlights of this company over the past century is a Herculean task, for they are as numerous as the stars – which is not quite as hyperbolic as it might sound. But just some of them – and I do stress “just some” – include the R 32 motorcycle of 1923, the first bike to sport the blue-andwhite

roundel on its tank, and a machine that innovatively sported a design not only far ahead of everything else with two wheels, but which was developed entirely around the engine. Then there was the achingly gorgeous BMW 328, a sports car rich in cutting-edge dynamics, aesthetics, and sheer innovation, and which was first unveiled in 1936. Leaping ahead now to the early Sixties, the “Neue Klasse” (“New Class”) BMW 1500 became the founding member of the family sport saloon segment. A segment in which today virtually every premium manufacturer has an offering. In keeping with this class-leading innovation, the BMW X5 – the world's fast “SAV,” or Sports

Activity Vehicle – hit the road in 1999. And I remember just how groundbreaking this machine was, just how astounding, having driven one for a good few thousand kilometres in the USA shortly before it was launched in our part of the world. Today, of course, the X5 sits in a segment brimming with competitors, yet it is now in the best shape of its life. In 2001 and 2003 respectively, the BMW Group – which today employs some 122 000 people at 140 locations around the world – rekindled the success of the UK’s MINI and RollsRoyce brands. Both of which are now responsible for remarkable machines. The BMW Group is also well aware of its responsibility, and redefines the term “conscientious corporate citizen” – and has since 1973. Back then, BMW was the first automotive producer in the world to instate an

| 55

Environment Officer. And since 1990, the company has cut the emissions of its vehicle fleet by an astounding 40 percent – due to the application of Efficient Dynamics technologies, launched in 2007. Plus by transitioning from combustion to all-electric power and running vehicles such as the BMW i3 and the BMW Motorrad C evolution Scooter, the BMW Group is creating completely new and groundbreaking ways of experiencing driving pleasure, sustainability and interconnectivity in urban settings. Which is just one way it is looking to the future. Then, of course, there is the recently launched, all-new 7 Series, a technological tour de force that takes the super saloon class to a new level altogether. But it is impossible to write about the Bavarian brand without looking at one of its best-loved, most successful vehicles: the 3 Series. Now subtle evolution is the name of the game with BMW, and specifically this model, these days. Which is a good thing indeed, not least because the advent of a new or upgraded model doesn't alienate and annoy existing owners. And so it is that following a midlife update to the 3 Series late last year, you would be hard-pushed to immediately recognise the changes bar the fact that it somehow looks a little crisper and sharper. But cut beneath the skin of this segment-defining sedan – now in its 41st year of production, with well over 14 million having been built – and you'll find a whole new lineup of engines. Perhaps the biggest and

most controversial news is that the entry-level 318i now uses a threecylinder, 1.5-litre turbo petrol motor, which ties in with all 3 Series now having 500cc per cylinder. It is a punchy engine this, with its 100kW and 220Nm, and an excellent way to enter the world of the 3 Series - something I myself did over 20 years ago when I bought my first BMW car (having already owned two of this manufacturer's motorcycles) in the guise of a carb-fed 316. At the other end of the spectrum of new motors lies the 340i. This uses a new three-litre, in-line six-cylinder motor with BMW Twin Power Turbo technology, and bangs down 240kW and 450Nm. An eight-speed auto is standard on this baby, which will hiss to 100km/h in 5.1 seconds, topping out at a governed 250km/h. But perhaps my own favourites in the 3 Series range are the 320i and the 320d, both available with either six-speed manual gearboxes or eightspeed automatics, with the latter being my favourite – simply because they're so technologically outstanding. In fact, I recently spent a week with each of these models, in self-shifter guise,

and they proved polished and poised, refined and well rounded – but with lashings of that fabled performance. The 320i uses a two-litre, twinturbo petrol motor to make a 135kW and 290Nm of torque, while the turbo diesel 320d also uses a two-litre motor. This one good for a smooth, seamless 140kW and 400Nm, allied to a fuel consumption of less than five litres per 100km in the combined cycle. Overall, a total of four petrol units (318i, 320i, 330i, 340i) and two diesels (320d and 330d) are new to the range as of last year. All, of course, use forced-induction, and it hardly needs to be said that the 3 Series remains rear-wheel drive. At the top end of the 3 Series range, meanwhile, the M3 lies essentially unchanged. But in any guise this machine is crushingly competent and hugely sophisticated, and having tested 3 Series models in a massive range of incarnations since the very early Nineties, it is rewarding to see how slickly it has evolved. Yet it has never lost its Sheer Driving Pleasure, and while the compact luxury sedan category in which it sells is one of the most competitive of all, in many ways the 3 Series remains a benchmark. And here's looking to another 100 years of BMW brilliance, and blistering brilliance at that...

The wheel story:

New Models round up JAMES SIDDALL on what's happening in the wonderful world of wheels... Tucson charmer It is a little hard to believe that I have been test driving Hyundais for 21 years – since the first Elantras hit our market in 1995. In that time the brand has surged ahead, and the days when these vehicles were bought purely because they were good value is long gone. Indeed, Hyundais are up there with the major players in terms of engineering and quality – as evidenced by the new Tucson. This is the successor to the successful ix35, whose predecessor in turn was called the Tucson. But never mind the name changing: the latest Tucson is a very good machine indeed, with slick, sharp styling, and it is available in a total of five derivatives, stretching from the entry-level Hyundai Tucson 2.0 Nu Premium with a either a manual sixspeed gearbox or automatic six-speed transmission, to the range-topping Hyundai Tucson 1.6 TGDi Elite with

58 |

the 7-speed Dual-Clutch Transmission (7DCT) and all-wheel drive. I have just spent a happy week with the Tucson 1.6 TGDi Executive (manual), with its new turbo petrol engine, making 130kW and 265Nm from 1 500 to 4 500 rpm. It is laden with creature comforts and technology, this machine, as well as all the active and passive safety measures you would expect at this price point, and the whole package has a decidedly, deliciously premium feel to it. Adding to the allure is Hyundai's five-year/150 000km manufacturer's warranty, enhanced by a new groundbreaking seven-year/200 000 km drivetrain warranty. That's confidence. Prices start at N$359 900 for the Tucson 2.0 Nu Premium (manual) through to N$499 900, with the two-wheel-drive model I tested coming in at N$419 990.

Caddy can do

Electric dreams Lexus was responsible for the world's first luxury hybrid – the RX 400h SUV, which went on sale in 2005. Now in a little over a decade the company has sold a million hybrids, with the millionth vehicle, a new NX 300h, delivered to a customer in Milan, Italy. "The hybrid drive system continues to be our core vehicle technology to help reduce CO2 emissions, while providing a pleasurable driving

60 |

experience," Lexus International President Tokuo Fukuichi says. "We have set ambitious environmental goals for 2050, and hybrid popularity worldwide is extremely important if we are to achieve those goals. “Today, Lexus manufactures ten hybrid models, with more on the way. I'm pleased over one-million customers worldwide have put their faith into our hybrid line-up."

There is a reassuring solidity to the new fourth-generation VW Caddy. Shutting the doors, for instance, elicits a solid-sounding “thunk!”. And when people asked me what I thought of the Caddy Maxi Trendline 2.0 TDI that I have been moving in for the past week, my immediate reply was: “It's incredibly well built.” Now naturally the Caddy in Crew Bus people-moving guise (there are also Panel Van versions) lacks the slick fashionability of an SUV or cutting-edge MPV, with its slightly utilitarian lines, although the front styling especially does now ape the VW corporate look. But it is those same utilitarian lines that lend it huge practicality and versatility. The long-wheelbase Maxi version here (fitted with the option of a second rear sliding door) seats seven happily, and swallows cargo like a hungry dinosaur, with easy loading access. In fact, with those two rear rows of seats that can be folded or even removed, total load area is a huge 3 880 litres. Power in the version I tested comes from a two-litre turbo diesel making

81kW and 250Nm between 1 500 and 2 500 rpm. That is enough to move it from rest to 100km/h in an ample but certainly not explosive 12.8 seconds, topping out at 170km/h, while fuel consumption is a claimed 5.8 litres per 100km in the combined cycle. Power runs to the front wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox, with the more powerful range-topper using a DSG self-shifter. Equipment levels are pretty good, and include VW's Automatic PostCollision Braking System. Standard, too, on this model is a Driver Alert system – basically it warns the driver when they're getting sleepy. In Trendline spec here, the vehicle also gets the likes of 16-inch alloys, electrically adjustable and heated mirrors, air-conditioning, and roof rails in black. The standard Composition Colour radio system, meanwhile, comes with a five-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, and an MP3compatible CD player. The whole cabin is redesigned, and the interior quality matches that of the exterior. The Caddy leaves you with the very distinct impression that it would stand up to years of robust use.

It is built in Poland, this vehicle, and with a retail tag of N$377 300 it is good value indeed.

Facebook bonanza We live in the age of social media. So it is entirely understandable that Mercedes-Benz South Africa is on a high as it has become the first automotive brand in the country to reach an important milestone – onemillion Facebook fans. As Mercedes notes, this is an especially huge achievement as the luxury automobile industry is highly competitive, particularly on social media, where the landscape is rapidly evolving. Social media has long been a vital part of the brand’s marketing and communications, speaking not only to its existing customers, but to a highly aspirational fan base who love the three-pointed star and enjoy being part of its digital community. “We started our Facebook page in late 2011, and soon realised that it was a crucial component in getting our message across to both existing and prospective customers,” says Selvin Govender,

the likeable, engaging Marketing Director: Mercedes-Benz Cars. “It was therefore imperative that we continuously assessed and changed our approach to ensure that we provided the most engaging and interesting content that our followers would appreciate and with which they would want to engage. “The continuous introduction of new and exciting models, and the creation of niche segments, has contributed positively to the popularity of the brand, clearly indicating that our rejuvenation strategy is bearing fruit.” Check them out at www.facebook.com/ mercedesbenzsouthafrica.

Blue-oval billions Ignore the pessimists. Investment is still flowing into the sub-continent. Ford Motor Company, for one, is investing R2.5-billion ($170 million US dollars) to expand operations in South Africa at its Silverton Assembly Plant in Pretoria, South Africa, to produce the all-new Ford Everest, along with the new Ford Ranger that was launched at the end of last year.

| 61

Just as importantly, this will create around 1 200 new jobs at Ford South Africa and within the South African supplier network. “Our customers love the capability and utility offered by the all-new Ford Everest,” said Jim Farley, Ford executive vice president and president of Europe, Middle East and Africa. “By producing the Everest in South Africa, we will be able to make it more readily available, and in a greater variety of models, for customers throughout Sub-Saharan Africa. “The R2.5-billion investment reaffirms the importance of these

62 |

markets as part of our growth strategy across the Middle East and Africa,” Farley added. “It further reinforces South Africa’s position as a strategic export base for Ford Motor Company.” And I agree with Jim. The Everest especially is superb.

Astra travel It is here. The eleventh-generation Opel Astra – the 2016 European Car of the Year – has hit our shores. And it is excellent. The five-door hatchback – the brand's C-segment contender, sitting

in the same category as the likes of VW's evergreen Golf – weighs up to 200kg less than the previous model, while with a range of three turbocharged and direct injection ECOTEC engines, efficiency is notably up. What is really great is that in an age where models seem to grow ever larger with each incarnation, the wind-cheating Astra is more compact than ever, with an overall length down by 50mm, and height down by half that – yet interior space is up. Handling, technology and luxury are all areas in which the Opel excels, and the eight-model range kicks of with the 1.0T Essentia at N$254 000, culminating in the 1.6T Sport PLUS MT at N$407 000. Now let's see how it fares against the might VW....

Amazing mazda When the all-new Mazda MX-5 launched recently it was clear it was destined for greatness. So it is perhaps not too huge a surprise that it has just been crowned both the 2016 World Car of the Year, and World Car Design of the Year. Nice one.

O FORTUNER! Toyota's all-new Fortuner brilliantly builds on this lifestyle legend's reputation, writes JAMES SIDDALL...

64 |

| 65

I

f the Toyota Hilux is a bona fide automotive legend, then its Fortuner sibling is not far off. More precisely, the Fortuner is a legend among SUVs, with the previous model having been a consistent sales success. But never mind cold old statistics. You only need look around virtually any parking lot on the sub-continent, and you will notice an abundance of these machines. Now, of course, an all-new Fortuner has just been launched. And it is not just a mild improvement over its predecessor, which was first launched in this part of the world in 2006. Nope, it is a quantum

leap forward – which is saying something given the previous model's richly deserved reputation for everything from reliability to usability to desirability. Styling is yet sleeker and slicker, and the new vehicle has a longer, wider stance than before, while it offers more refined on-road use – and improved offroad capability. This truly is a vehicle for all seasons, and one with a decidedly, distinctly premium feel. It also boasts new-era diesel engines, and there is now a 4WD electric switch (on 4X4 models, obviously) – just as is the case with its Hilux sibling.

Starting with the cabin, well, it is precisely what you would expect from an upscale SUV – perhaps even one bearing a German nameplate – and there is generous seating for seven people over three rows. The second-row seating is split 60:40, FORTUNER PRICING 2.4 GD-6 Raised Body Manual: N$436 400 2.4 GD-6 Raised Body Automatic: N$453 400 2.7 VVT-i Raised Body Automatic: N$429 400 2.8 GD-6 Raised Body Manual: N$513 400 2.8 GD-6 4x4 Manual: N$571 400 2.8 GD-6 Raised Body Automatic: N$531 400 2.8 GD-6 4x4 Automatic: N$589 400 4.0 V6 4x4 Automatic: N$633 400 Prices include a three-year 100 000km warranty and five-year - 90 000km service plan.

and includes a slide function, and reclining backrests. Third-row seating is split 50:50 and incorporates a recline function, and both rows can be stowed to provide epic luggage space. Equipment levels are simply superb – and the higher you go in the range the better they get. For starters, all Fortuners pack audio systems with four to six speakers. Upper-spec 2.8 GD and 4.0 V6 models include a seveninch screen with DVD compatibility and reverse camera display, while the V6 also includes satnav. Yet more standard kit includes air-con with separate airflow controls for second-row passengers, power door locks, windows and mirrors, steering-wheel audio and telephone controls, plus vast storage space, and cup and bottle holders aplenty. And that is just for starters. Underpinning this machine – which is “built for bush and boulevard,” as Toyota quite rightly says – is a rigid body, all-coil suspension, and a highstrength frame. Huge attention went into the likes of torsional rigidity, corrosion protection, crashworthiness, and all-round strength. Built-in obsolescence is most certainly not part of the package. Like the Hilux, this machine is powered by two new turbo diesels – the 2.4 and 2.8 GD series – plus 2.7 VVT-i and 4.0 V6 petrol power plants. The diesels are especially noteworthy,

with the 2.4 GD making 110kW and 400Nm of torque between 1 600 and 2 000 rpm. The 2.8 GD punches out 130kW and 420Nm from 1 600 to 2 400rpm in manual guise. Automatic transmission versions receive a boost to 450Nm over the same rev span. Fuel efficiency is brilliant, and the 2.4-litre GD in high-output guise, for instance, will sip just seven litres per 100km in manual form, and 7.9 litres in auto form. The 2.8 GD turns in figures between 7.5 and 8.5 litres per 100km, depending on the model, while towing capacity is up to three tons. Important that, because as lifestyle vehicles Fortuners are going to be regularly called on to haul everything from horseboxes to boats. The petrol engines, meanwhile, make 122kW and 245Nm in VVT-i

guise, and 175kW and 376Nm in 4.0 litre V6 guise. Healthy stuff. Transmissions include six-speed manual and auto boxes, and my own personal preference would be for the latter – especially given the seamless technology incorporated into Toyota's self-shifters. And when it comes to safety, it is hardly a surprise that the Fortuner incorporates a reassuring alphabet soup of safety aids. Vehicle Stability Control (VSC). Active Traction Control (ATC). Downhill Assist Control (DAC - on 4X4 models). Trailer Sway Control (TSC). You name it. A barrage of airbags is also present and correct. Also present and correct is sheer durability mixed with refinement and resale values, which I safely predict will be bulletproof. Indeed, while I drive around a hundred or more new cars annually as a motoring journalist, I have already been wholeheartedly endorsing this machine to anyone shopping in this category and at this (relatively reasonable) price level.

Elephant heaven at Camp Kuzuma There’s an exciting moment when you set off on a game drive and the ranger asks what animals you’d like to see. It always makes me laugh, as if this khaki-clad Dr Doolittle can conjure up spectacular animal sightings on command. But you don’t even need to go out looking for the animals at Camp Kuzuma, because they’re going to come right to you. By: The Roving Ambassador

| 71

C

amp Kuzuma is a private luxury safari lodge in Botswana’s famous Chobe region. It sits in the world’s busiest ‘elephant corridor’ linking two of Africa’s most amazing parks: Chobe National Park and Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe. The lodge overlooks a waterhole used by herds of elephant as well as wildebeest, buffalo, roan antelope, sable, giraffe, lion and elusive leopards. If you prefer your wildlife a little smaller, you’ll be blown away by the abundant variety of birdlife. Surrounded by the Kuzuma Forest, the lodge is 5km from the open plains

72 |

of the Kazuma Pans. Daily game drives will take you to explore these areas and you can also join a foot safari, where a trained ranger takes you closer to nature on a bush walk. Camp Kuzuma blends in perfectly with its surroundings, with elevated wooden walkways connecting five luxury tented suites to the main lodge. Don’t let the word ‘tent’ deter you though – each large individual suite offers crisp white linen on spacious king-size beds, with twin and triple bed options available. The en-suite bathrooms include a Victorian bath, double basins and ‘his and hers’ inside

showers. But don’t miss the treat of an outdoor shower for the deliciously naughty feeling of watching the wildlife when you’re as naked as they are! The suites stand under a canopy of mopane trees, at night, maybe, you’ll hear a lion roar from the luxury of your big, safe bed. Each suite boasts a romantic and nostalgic ambiance with safari memorabilia and a private sun deck looking onto vast African landscapes. It’s eco-friendly too, with solar power providing electricity in the day and storing energy in batteries to power the camp at the night. Solar geysers supply hot water, so you can have a refreshing shower when you come back from your morning and evening game drives. For more rejuvenation, book a treatment at the on-site bush spa for a massage or facial against a backdrop of the sounds of nature. The main lodge has an open plan bar, lounge and dining area, and a large wooden deck with a sparkling swimming pool. Take a magical midnight dip under a million stars whilst looking out over the floodlit waterhole.

| 73

The sunken boma is a great place to read a book in comfort in the cool afternoon breeze, and guests often congregate around the boma’s open fire after dinner for a nightcap and to swop their stories of the day. Dining at Camp Kuzuma is another delicious experience, with gourmet cuisine with an African flair prepared by top-notch chefs. You can eat in the simple but elegant dining room open to the breezes, dine on the deck beneath the stars or have a private romantic dinner next to the pool while watching the watering hole. You can also use the camp as a base to explore the rest of the famous Chobe National Park, take a cruise on the Chobe River or visit the spectacular Victoria Falls. All these trips can be arranged through the camp, as well as a visit to the local community to meet the village chief and see the children in the local schools. Five-star Camp Kuzuma offers an incredible and unforgettable African adventure just an hour’s drive from Botswana’s Kasane airport.

SAFARI ETIQUETTE There are unwritten rules when self-driving on safari (and being on a group vehicle)... some for safety, others for the animals’ safety, and some are just plain good safari manners. They’re worth listening to By: Anne Schauffer Cartoons: Gary Larson

Shouldn’t have to mention it, but drive through some game parks, and see rusting cans, plastic bags and bottles, and you’ll understand why. Litter is dangerous for animals – the effects of which are seen repeatedly with animals tangled in plastic and so on. Keep a litter bag in your car. Put a new one in every day. And...never ever throw a cigarette butt out your window. Aside from the obvious litter aspect, Africa can be very dry, and a cigarette butt can spell devastation. 4. Rhino Facts: In the late 1970s aggressive poaching took the Namibian Black Rhino to the brink of extinction. Thousands of rhino were slaughtered to satisfy the demand for fashion accessories and oriental medicines. By the early 1980s the population had plummeted from 65,000 to just 60. The ‘Rhino for Erongo’ project was established to reintroduce and conserve rhino in the Erongo region, reintroducing Black Rhino into the area after the last of its kind was caught in 1974. For every bottle of OASIS sold a contribution is made to the ‘Rhino for Erongo’ project, helping to conserve and protect these beautiful creatures.

Kano Computer and Coding Kit Teaches children to create technology, not just consume it The Kano Computer and Coding Kit is a great tool used to teach children about building their own computer, just like LEGO. It’s the first step for parents to introduce their children to science, art, coding, hardware, and even more. Kano Kit is a computer that anyone can build, simply follow the storybooks and the simple steps to start building the computer. This award winning product has been designed based on 10,000 hours of research with educators, artists, and children. It’s a fun way to teach

Norlan Whisky Glass Offers you a perfect whisky drinking experience Whisky is a distilled alcoholic beverage made up of hundreds of compounds, and just like wine, with proper aeration. The volatile undesirable elements will evaporate faster than desirable aromatic, flavourful ones, giving you a concentration of the aromatics. Norlan Whisky Glass has been carefully designed and developed to offer you a perfect whisky drinking experience through the combination of design, science, and sociology. The combination of science performing inside and with aesthetic beauty performing outside, this glass aims to capture a whisky’s complex perfume by delivering it to your senses better than any existing whisky glass on the market. The specially developed protrusion which forms inside the glass is adapted through studying biomimicry. When swirled around the glass, fluid forms a standing wave shape, thus, increasing the surface to air ratio and rate of oxidization. The effect is usually that more ethanol evaporates. By

Recreational Island Portable floating platform for recreational use Henry Ward Design has teamed up with BMT’s Nigel Gee to develop a highly innovative “Recreational Island”. Compared to the Tropical Island Paradise Mega Yacht, this one is a simpler version and more portable. Measuring 10m x 8m when deployed, this design is a floating foldable platform when in its folded position. It can be kept in a tender bay of a large yacht. User’s can deploy this unit by using standard overhead tender cranes, or it

can be towed when in a folded position to the preferred location. “Recreational Island” is a good choice to use when in a shallow bay that a yacht cannot access, or if preferred, a yacht owner can also use this platform simply as a stern extension to the yachts existing transom platform, thereby creating a large and flexible space for dining or just relaxing. At this moment, the development team is doing extensive research, to provide an option for yacht owners to configure this “Recreational Island” as a portable helicopter landing platform. This could be very useful for existing yachts that have no landing facilities,

where they don’t have to sacrifice their valuable deck space. “Recreational Island” at first, was Henry Ward’s project that formed part of his final year project as a yacht designer. BMT recognized his ingenious design and has taken into serious consideration the possibility of investing in the undertaking of technical studies, to assess the technical feasibility and engineering of the design. Can you see the potential of this design? It can be applied to the hotel industry, as well as the military and many others. Designer: Henry Ward Design

mobility, that allows an individual to avoid traffic jams. As the use of a car keeps declining, small electric vehicles might be in our future mobility. Weighing in at 25kg, when folded out, it has dimensions of 1200mm (H) x 300mm (W) x 1500mm (L). When folded, its length shrinks to just 400mm. The automatic folding mechanism gives you a magical feeling, it can be triggered with just the press of a button, by tapping your smartphone thanks to a integrated app, or by simply using a hand gesture.

INU folding scooter is constructed using aluminium alloy in its 6005T5 frame, 14.5-inch (70/80-10) type approved tires and a 1100mm wheelbase. It can accommodate a maximum load of 120kg and reach a top speed of 25km/hour, with its brushless hub-motor of 500w/750w. The li-ion battery requires three hours charging time from 0% to 100%, but only one hour from 50% to 100%. From: INU

This unit features a fully adjustable 6,000-BTU horseshoe-shaped, stainless steel burner that provides even heat distribution. The ignition offers pushbutton lighting so you don’t have to carry matches. The cooking surface is a porcelain-coated stamped-steel grate and is removable for easy cleaning, and is dishwasher safe. There’s also a convenient carry handle. Its removable grease tray keeps excess grease off your food. From: Coleman

The journey matters in reaching the desired investment destination I

f the investment destination, or objective, is to retire comfortably with a good income stream, it matters how you get there. That’s according to Mario Fisher, Portfolio Manager at Prescient Investment Management: “Ultimately the investment journey comes down to taking short and medium-term risk controlled opportunities that give the benefit of continuously compounding off a higher base, keeping the focus on the long-term destination and hopefully exceeding those expectations.” Fisher stressed the importance of starting to save as soon as possible to take advantage of the power of compound interest. “Never lose sight of the longterm goal to maximise returns, but take risk-controlled opportunities along the way. Along the investment road there will be the potential for bankable profits which grow through compounding. By taking advantage of these it’s possible to exceed investment goals,” said Fisher. However, he noted the danger in taking excessive short-term risk to maximise short-term gains. If the investment declines, the longterm goal to maximise value will be affected, and a few successive bets that blow out will severely compromise objectives. To avoid getting caught up in “short-termism”, Prescient’s approach as a fund manager is not to lose sight of the destination. “We never forget whose money is being managed, and we recognise that our decisions have consequences and that our actions carry weight.

108 |

Mario Fisher is a portfolio manager and analyst and focusses on the Global Growth Fund and the Index Portfolios at Prescient Investment Management in South Africa, a subsidiary of the JSE listed company Prescient Limited (PCT:SJ), whose operations span Sub-Saharan Africa incl. Namibia, also Europe, Australia and Asia.

This helps to avoid falling into the trap of taking excessive short-term risk in the hope for a short-term reward,” said Fisher. In this regard, he said that because many forecasted events never materialise, while others happen without being anticipated, a pragmatic approach to investing delivers better results. “We actively manage risk and build investment portfolios by evaluating current market pricing, with a view to trading assets based on their current valuation, without forecasting. This pragmatic approach ensures that we are able to navigate through uncertain times and plot a course that generates consistent returns, without a crystal ball.” According to Fisher, economic growth, earnings, valuation, interest rates, inflation and a plethora of other factors, including unpredictable events, ultimately decide the future direction of investment markets. Attempting to predict the simultaneous magnitude, direction and effect of these forces renders most forecasts meaningless. In the context of its approach of taking decisions on the basis of the value of assets as they currently stand, Prescient Investment Management’s view is that the domestic equity market offers little opportunity. “Liquidity in markets is based on the psychology of the participants. When it becomes increasingly negative, bids dry up and valuations fall. Prescient’s preferred approach is to get exposure to the South African equity market through derivatives.”

Baggage Guidelines

At Air Namibia we are committed to ensuring that our passengers are re-united with their luggage at end of their journey. Given the complexity of the environment in which we operate, passengers’ luggage often gets out of our control and care, (for brief moments when they are subjected to control and handling by various agencies.) It is for this reason we request passengers to check their luggage on point of arrival (immediately after collecting their bag) to ensure that bag was not tampered with; and to report any suspected losses immediately. We request passengers not to check-in valuable items, especially those that are susceptible to theft, such as cash, jewellery, electronic devices like mobile phones, watches, sunglasses, to mention a few. In line with International Industry Conventions on passenger baggage liability, Air Namibia cannot be held liable if these valuable items are pilfered from checked-in baggage. We encourage our passengers to lock or wrap their bags where possible.

Our rules pertaining to baggage include the following We offer our passengers a generous free hand baggage allowance, with maximum weight of 10kg each, and maximum size 55 x 38 x 20 cm; plus an overcoat, an umbrella, a walking stick, a ladies hand bag, a reasonable amount of reading material, and a laptop. We also allow a fully collapsible wheelchair and/or a pair of crutches as hand baggage.

Your business trip may be a tax risk New Namibian tax laws for cross border business Namibia passed a number of tax law changes in December 2015. These amendments affect withholding taxes, VAT on imported services, income and employee taxes. In the recent budget speech discussions, the Ministry of Finance confirmed their focus on transfer pricing and general tax compliance. New sections in the law can now hold officers and shareholders personally liable for the tax debts of a company. These developments put cross-border business and travelling employees in the tax spotlight. Talk to us today about understanding and managing your Namibian tax exposure.

PASSENGER’S AIRPORT TAX Great flights begin at well-maintained airports; in terms of service delivery, superior facilities, and memorable experiences. In Namibia, Airports are run and maintained by the Namibia Airports Company (NAC), a State-Owned Entity (SOE) formed in 1998 by Act of Government (Act 25 of 1998). The NAC provides airport infrastructure, amenities, and facilitates airport services for domestic and international airlines and passengers. In fulfilling its mandate, the NAC ensures that airport infrastructure and safety and security equipment are well maintained and meet world-class standards. Airports under the NAC are: Hosea Kutako Airport, Eros Airport, Walvis Bay Airport, Luderitz Airport, Keetmanshoop Airport, Ondangwa Airport, Rundu Airport and Katima Mulilo Airport.

WHAT PORTION OF AN AIR TICKET’S PRICE IS PAYABLE TO NAC? In line with NAC Tariff Publication 2016/2017 the following VAT inclusive tariffs currently will apply at the airports/aerodromes under the NAC’s management:

Description International passengers

WHAT IS AIRPORT/PASSENGER TAX? Airport tax, as it appears on return or one way flight tickets, refers to the fee charged to departing passengers. When you buy your flight ticket (whether directly from the airline, or as part of a holiday package), a portion of the total cost for the ticket is for airport taxes. This service fee is in line with Section 5 (1) of the Airports Company Act 25 of 1998.

Domestic passengers

HOW DOES NAC GENERATE MONEY TO MAINTAIN AIRPORTS? The NAC generates revenue via airport tax fees charged to the different publics – such as airport tax payable by departing and arriving passengers who use their services.

NAC tariff excluding VAT 2016/2017

N$ 115.00

N$ 17.00

N$ 132.00

All passenger service charges for foreign-bound flights are zero-rated for VAT administration purposes.

WHO REGULATES / CONTROLS THE IMPLEMENTATION OF AIRPORT TAXES IN NAMIBIA?

The charging of these fees is regulated in compliance with ICAO Doc 9562. In Namibia, the NAC, in compliance with Doc 9562 and its mandate per the Airports Company Act. Both these statutory documents regulate and control the continued implementation, review and collection of these fees. HOW REGULARLY IS AIRPORT TAXES REVIEWED AND BY WHOM? The NAC reviews the charges in consultation with the Board of Airline Representatives (BAR), who represents the airlines, and aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), who represents general aviation operators. This review is conducted annually or as decided by the relevant parties in order for the fees to remain commensurate with ever escalating operational and other costs. NAC has over the years invested billions of dollars into its key capital projects to improve amongst others; runways and terminal facilities at its various airports.

WHAT ARE AIRPORT TAXES USED FOR? Airport tax is one of the key revenue streams of any airport and is levied on passengers to recover the cost of running and for the up keep of passenger terminal facilities that are dedicated to passenger services, including the costs of security services attributable thereto (unless security services are charged for separately), and the cost of ground handling facilities and services attributable to passenger arrivals and departures.

In line with its mission and vision , the NAC ensures that every experience at landing and departure is of world - class standard and airport taxes play an integral part in making it all possible.
