01 | SITE ANALYSIS Pudu Urban Community Center In Urban context like Pudu, community center plays an important role to get people to meet, gather, interact, share information, support each other and celebrate certain occasions. With the location of the site beside Jalan Sayur which is one of the important spots in Pudu to be remembered among the youngsters. Pudu is the place where elderlies gather regardless from pudu or other places like Cheras. Therefore, this proposed community center should also pay attention to the elderlies after detailed site analysis in Pudu area.

Design Studio VI January 2015

Students are expected to integrate all issues like theory, design, social, history, culture, technologies, science and services in solving task given within urban context. Design proposal to address programmatic, cultural, social, functional, contextual issues, urban sustainability and demonstrate understanding of inuences of building structure, construction, materials and the interior environment.

Pudu was the entertainment spot for youngsters in 1970s. People will go for supper at Jalan Sayur after watching movie. (Pictures of cinema which has been demolished.) There were 3 of the well-known cinema.

Pudu Plaza is a main spot for the elderlies to gather, chit chat, hang around or play games.

Jalan Sayur or called ‘Wai Sek Gai’ is the main attraction of Pudu at night. People from different age group come here for traditional local delicious food.

An exterior view of the Pudu LRT station, as seen from Jalan Sarawak to the northwest, illustrates the station design's consistency with other elevated Ampang Line stations. This is the main public transpotation line to reach Pudu

The site currently is a carpark area

Pudu Wet Market One of the largest wet market in KL area. People from Pudu or other area come here to shop for groceries every morning.

SITE PLAN 1:500

SWOT Analysis Strength : The site attracts people from different age groups travel to Jalan Sayur to enjoy local tranditional food from other area in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. Pudu is not celebrated by younger generations, but Jalan Sayur has played a very important role in keeping the visitation of the younger generation. Thus this strength should be enhances at the same time preserve how is it now. Weakness : Poor eating condition. It has no proper lighting which depends mainly on street lights and the lights of individual stalls. Hygienic is an issue due to the rubbish bin located near to the stalls. Jalan Sayur does not have any proper sheltering system in which people will not be able to dine in during the rain. The main shelter will be only the five foot way of the shop lots facing Jalan Sayur. Opportunity : It is the only thing that can attract non-local people to pay a visit due to the foods. During the night in Jalan Sayur, there are working class people, old folks, families and even college students will dine here in groups. This is a good opportunity to promote interaction among different groups of people Threat : Aging population. The food sellers are mostly in their 50s or above. The food stalls mostly are being operated since 1950s and passed down by their parents or grandparents. The threat faced by the site is making Jalan Sayur go downhill as there are no youngsters to operate the food stalls. The food stalls may be also operating illegally in which operators may be fined unless permit is obtained.

LJ’s New Landmark Libraries | Palo Verde Library/Maryvale Community Center Architect: Gould Evans Associates + Wendell Burnette Architects Location: Phoenix, Arizona Associate Architect: Wendell Burnette Architects Landscape Architect: Ten Eyck Landscape Architects Client: City of Phoenix Project Area: 43,000 sqf

Large expanses of glass create transparency make the activities in each space visible to the other across a central shaded promenade, people passing by can interact with activities inside. It also prevent inappropriate behavior, makes everyone feel safe. One of the reasons why people seldom go to the site of the project is due to its comfort level. The site is dirty and abandoned may let people feel that the site is not safe. If a community center were built at the site, certain level of transparency has to be maintained with the use of glass in Maryvale Community Center to create the sense of safety.

Inner-City Scapes. Live & play is the focus of this community center. The 2 disparate activities found common ground and rejuvenate a neighborhood. It demostrates how cross-pollination creates stronger neighborhoods.

“Streets” inside the shared complex, as well as those to the pool and into the park serve as pedestrian links to park amenities, parking, public transit, and the surrounding neighborhoods.

The concept of implying street into the complex makes the project stands out and leads to the highest foot traffic. The site of our community center project which also beside a street with traditional hawker food stall. Street should be put attention to like this Maryvale Community Center that use street as attraction.

At the side of the community center project, there is also 2 big existing trees that need to be reserved. Although the scale is smaller than in the Maryvale Community Center but the location of the 2 trees makes the project challenging.

This project’s challenges included the need to maintain the existing recreational park and establishing a renewed civic presence in the community.

Precedent Study 02 Summer Cinema at Fili Park Address: Bolshaya Filyovskaya, 22, Moscow, Russia Workshop leaders: Dmitry Likin, Oleg Shapiro Architect: Olga Rokal Photos: Ilya Ivanov Facilities: Amphitheatre, cafe, recreational area, cinema, make-up room, store + The success of summer cinema at Gorky Park is triggering a wave of interest as memories of this of outdoor entertainment revive. +The cinema has a ‘kit’ design that can be adapted to the needs of any particular park. +Open-air element as design solution and more joy to movie-watching experience

deep wooden steps create sitting areas Seating area made flexible allows more activity and interaction between the people and the community center and interaction among the people

Fully Utilise Large Space (Cinema/Theater) Back of the cinema screen always made unpleasant. Adding some green at the contary side making the whole project as attraction point and create a relax and environmental-friendly atmosphere. Back of the screen can always be different by adding something simple.

Day-time use as multi-functional spaces. (celebration/ classes)

Night-time use to watch movies. As an issue to concern, the theater or cinema occupies a large space. Provide only one function for the space will be risky as if people are not using it often, the space becomes wasted considering from the viewpoint of the gross floor area. Fully utilising the big space by providing more than one function to it like the open cinema in Fili Park can avoid the spaces being wasted.

space frame screen doubles as a vertical wall on the contrary side

Site + Roof Plan

Cantilevered terrace is covered by timber louvers. Cantilevered terrace increased the interaction of the people with nature and other happening outside the building. The use of material, timber louver shows a lower profile like community center to welcome people. Timber louver also help to shelter the interior of the space.

The shape of the structure functions as an amphitheater that fits more than 300 people on the integrated stone chairs and grass surface for outdoor performances. It is accessible by walking from ground floor

The area for watching performance are connected to the ground floor of the performance area to increase the interaction between building users and performance at ground floor. Connections are both way of in and out of the building as one. Interaction is accessible from every floors. In the community center, the street that being included in the building’s gross floor area, it will be the focal point of the building in which it should be accessible from each level and every corner in the building.

Precedent Study 04

Places are open to public with an courtyard and a old building at the back of the restaurant has attracted many people to visit regardless of local or tourists.

Sekeping Kong Heng, Ipoh Sekeping Kong Heng, in the charming old town of Ipoh, is located in a 3 storey neo-classical building which also houses a famous coffee shop of the same name on the ground floor that serves coffee and local dishes in town.

Many new shops opened around which themed on the vintage, nostalgia and fascination with childhood years. For example and indian-operated barber shop, second hand vintage goods stall, new cafes such as Burp & Giggles.

Plan B Cafe

Kong Heng Square

To form a very close relationship between the historical buildings, Kong Heng restaurant with a modern cafe, Plan B by using a uniform design elements and the spaces are opened up to public. In the community center project, a strong relationship is needed to tie the community center with the existing traditional hawker stall.

Ground floor is remained as public space like reading corner, dining area, public toilet, gallery Old-fashioned Indian barber shop The theme of the shops in Kong Heng Square are consistance, thus attracting people to here for the vintage fashion

Even though ground floor area is very important as prime area, in this design, ground floor is remain public and open with provision of public toilet. In the community center project, the site is now currently a parking lot which is open and beside the famous hawker stalls. The openess of the building at the ground floor need to be remained so that public do not feel strange and have the sense of familiarity.

Subtle entrance of the hotel by just staircase so that it doesn’t entrance to the main place is not necessary grand and welcoming. At the place full of overpower the beauty of the The historical feature like Kong Heng, a staircase leading up to the hotel rooms sits peacefully here. In the community project, a subtle entrance to upper floors will not overwhelm the surrounding environment happening side of the hawker stalls.

03 | CONCEPTUAL DEVELOPMENT Community center is a place for giving back to the community. Jalan Sayur remained as one of the place which attracts different age group of people. In stead of taking away the site (curent car park area) to become commerciallized, the concept is to give back the to the jalan sayur by extending that up to the site.

From the research found that, Jalan Sayur contains some memory for the elderlies nowadays in Pudu as they will go for supper in Jalan Sayur after watching movie in cinemas near by back in their 20s and 30s. This project wish to bring back that experience as closely related to jalan Jayur and Pudu context.

Site (currently as parking area)

Concept of Street

To extend Jalan Sayur, ground floor with high room head will be extracted out.

To acheive certain level of openness and the perception of extension of street, 1st floor will be extracted out.

Top 2 floors will be clean finished as the environment of the site gives impression of messy which intention of the project to create contrast with it.

Big tree that need to be maintained that interupt the block on the top 2 floors.

Extracted out the tree branches area at the block. Conceptual form of building is formed.

Strategic Framework The feeling towards the site is negative which is a place that dying, a place that people aware of it but no effort was put in. The site is a very subtle place that doesn't overwhelm Jalan Sayur. The concept of the community center is to extend the Jalan Sayur at the same time remain the sense of "life". To make the design more subtle, ground floor has no great entrance to welcome the visitors. The pavement will be same from the Jalan Sayur up to building ground floor and eating area will still remained as open to sky. The community center is to create contrast to the building surrounding it because the site is too chaos and messy. Clean facade to make it contrast with the chaotic site. The intention of the site is to bring back the old times memories and experience of the elderly in Pudu. Jalan Sayur itself will be so much meaning to them, with this, the project will enhance the experience by both tangible and intangible elements. For example the mobile food peddle, movie experince, game experience and the original way of operation of the street food stalls

Impact of Project This urban community center does not only focus on the elderly but the people around Pudu such as elementary school kids, people from other area for dining in Jalan Sayur. The community serves the users by providing a community library and classes for public, comfortable game area and halfway housing for elderly. A small dental clinic is provided and the Chinese physiotherapy is replaced from the current site. There is also urban farming provided for the local. The urban farming not only serves as a ingredient provider but also for education purpose. With the implication of the rainwater harvesting system to be used as watering system for the urban farming, this green and sustainable architecture could give a lesson to the public and also school kids. Not all elderly need life assistant, in fact many elderlies are still healthy and intact in which they would be enjoy doing the volunteer work. Elderly from outside can do volunteer work in in the community center for example taking care of the elderly who needs life assistant or they can gather and discuss of volunteer activity or fun raising activities to be held in the community center.

05 | PROJECT MAIN FEATURE There are 2 approaches in designing the community center. One is embracing the tree another one is celebrating the street. In the design, I am celebrating the street by extending the street by a tall room height and double volume space which can go up to 8m height. The street furniture is also extended into the building at ground floor. The food stalls are to maximize to originality as it is now to maintain the familiarity of the people towards Jalan Sayur. There are also shop “lot to be rent which complied to the concept of STREET. Shop lots will have no walls but vehicle-designed stalls will be provided. People who has business will have to rent a parking lor instead of a shop. Shop can be a) a abandon car which is already broken down and cannot be repaired b) the stall owners' van for their business. Big screen for open cinema is having 2 sides of screen. This attracts people to visit the site for example people from the main road, Jalan Pudu. This open cinema is a new concept where it attracts younger generation at the same time giving the old-time movie experience to the elderlies in Pudu. The additional art park on the Jalan Sayur is to welcome pedestrian from the other site of access. Designed bench in which people can relax and play around with it. As the inspiration from the Summer Cinema at Fili Park, different functions will be provided throughout the day. a) day-lit hour, art park will become a small performance area for artists like playing music instrument or musical drama b) night time it can be used as part of seating area for the open cinema.
