Kuala Kangsar is 130 years old upon establishment. It is royal town of Perak with rich historical values, heritage buildings and unique living heritage or art and crafts. Kuala Kangsar located at the downstream of Sungai Kangsar and joins Sungai Perak. Kuala Kangsar is approximately 25km nortwest of Ipoh, 25km southeast of Taiping. PURLIEU TOUR CENTER Kuala Kangsar is a royal town despite its humble setting. The late Perak Sultan was a humble ruler and often mingled with the citizens. This earned the citizens’ full respect towards him as he understood their needs, thus the relationship among them were like intimate friends. The current Sultanate of Perak is inherited to a more authoritarian ruler where citizens pay their respect only due to the fear of the royal family’s authority. This is where the rift of engagement between the citizens and the royalty becomes evident. The concept of the project is to reestablish the engagement between the royalty and the citizens, as well as tourists. The Purlieu Tour Center aims to promote interaction between tourists and the history of the royal town of Kuala Kangsar by having tour packages, an information center, exhibitions and a historical library of Kuala Kangsar. K-Style Hub has the information to meet all tourists' needs, from a tourist information center to a hallyu experince, hansik exhibition and experience hall, medical tourism information and more. Expounding upon the center of just providing information, K-Style Hub also aims to provide various chances to learn about Korean culture and food, as well as easily participate in traditional experiences.

Korean-star zone

A double dome 180 meters in diameter, offering radiating geometry, a randomly perforated woven material, providing shade punctuated by bursts of sun, creating “shower of lights”. At night, this protected landscape is an oasis of light under a starry dome. Space to experience Korean Culture

Synthesis: Interesting Tourist Center which “only-in-Korea” by giving the experiences that one can go through in the tourist center where tourists can spend hours in. It includes the significant Korea culture in the tourist center such as KPOP, Medical (Plastic surgery) information, Korean food experience area by letting tourists to experience things instead of just getting tourist information

Dappled shadows created by the dome were reminders of “the souk or the light through the leaves of palm trees”. The inspiration was by weaving palm leaves which is the traditional roofing technique. The canopy is anchored at just four points, giving the impression of floating.

An innovative element of the IMA is the advanced responsive metallic brise soleil on the south façade. Nouvel’s proposal for this system was well received for its originality and its reinforcement of an archetypal element of Arabic architecture – the mashrabiyya. The system incorporates several hundred light sensitive diaphragms that regulate the amount of light that is allowed to enter the building. During the various phases of the lens, a shifting geometric pattern is formed and showcased as both light and void. Squares, circles, and octagonal shapes are produced in a fluid motion as light is modulated in parallel. Interior spaces are dramatically modified, along with the exterior appearance.

Studies: Inspiration of facade inspired by the old palace of Kuala Kangsar, Istana Kenangan and casting the shadow. Istana Kenangan remained as a tourist spots but due to safety & conservation, it is currently closed for upgrading and maintenance. Intention is to create the similar experience in the interior of Istana Kenangan.

1.0 The intention of the facade mainly is to create the experience of being in the old Kuala Kangsar Palace. The old palace were built without nail. After the new palace is built, the old palace suppose to serve as a tourist spot. However there are too many maintenance works have to be carried out, often tourists and visitors will not be able to enter to the old palace but just view it from far. This facade intents to create the shadow as if a visitor is visiting the old palace

1.0 Another purpose of facade is also play as a shading device to filter out some east sun. The shadow is casted to the library area. The library will be the resource center to look for the historical memory of Kuala Kangsar and the palace. The shadow helps to enhance the reading experience in the library about Kuala Kangsar.

The lack of technological development is part of the reasons that Kuala Kangsar remained slow paced and not welcoming to the youngesters. This interactive curtain wall provides view to Kuala Kangsar with interactive information display.

GREEN DESIGN STRATEGY

GREEN DESIGN STRATEGY During the preliminary design stage, it is important to look at the green design strategy. In the section, green strategies are used based on the 5 categories of GBI criteria in order to maximize the value to achieve GBI certificate.

A. SUSTAINABLE SITE Develop pedestrian path & bike path [2.1] Main transportation to Kuala Kangsar is bus. Pedestrain path is proposed to link bus terminal, [2.2] Existing pedestrian crossing provided but at a dangerous zone (roundabout). Therefore pedestrian linkage is proposed from bus terminal to the site and linked to another side of the vibrant area by going through existing park [2.3] Proposed pedestrian walkway to be linked near the adjacent green/landscaped area (recreation park) to connect with crowd.

[3.4] -Inactive adjacent recreation park (due to lack of convenient pedestrian path) - Pedestrian linkage from bus terminal to site, then to the riverfront area by going through existing landscaped area. - To utilize the shades that provided by the canapy of the tree at the park and the 5ft way of shoplots.

B. WATER EFFICIENCY

[4.1] Undulating roof increased the potential of rainwater harvesting system to be implemented in the project design. [4.2] Rainwater harvesting tanks / cisterns are located in the building which toilet will be located near to the “tail” of the roof due to lower ceiling height, thus reduce the travel distance of the water to the tank and to the toilet (reduced cost of plumbing) Area of use : ceiling above toilet [4.3] Perimeter drain at the “tail” of the undulating roof (connects the ground and the roof) will be used to collect stormwater runoff. Water collected after treatment will be used for landscape irrigation

C. ENERGY & ATMOSPHERE [5.2] building is oriented in such a way that major opening are facing north and south-east whilst west facing facade has minimum sides with solid walls to reduce evening sun heat

Passive cooling system

[5.1] Natural ventilation is introduced by creating air pressure difference which helps to increase air speed. Breeze from the river is captured and cross-ventilate the building. Bushes and trees to filter the incoming air.

[5.3,5.4] Building is oriented to welcome the breeze from the river. The tree acts as a turning loop and also the cooling channel for breeze from the river

[5.5] Louver with diamond motif derived from old palace to create similar experience as if in the old palace. The louver also helps to filter out most of the direct sunlight which reduce heat gain of the building. Area of use : east-facing facade

[5.6] Green roof is proposed and creeper plants from the roof creeping down above drop off area which helps to filter out some contaminants and dusts from entering to the site

[6.2] Diagram indicates easten sun casting shadow into the building. Program located at the daylight perimeter zones are benefited (exhibition, activity romm and multipurpose hall)

[6.4] the use of light wells / courtyard to allow penetration of lights into interior spaces, thus reduce dependency on artificial lighting during the day.

[8.1] List of proposed materials that are locally available and area made from locally renewable resources. Grasscrete •open patterns allowing grass or other flora to grow •improve stormwater absorption and drainage. (refer to building plan C) Area of use : car park area

BUILDING PLAN C [9.2] Building openings are facing existing landscape, green in the building boundary and river. Pockets of green (bushes) also provide green space views to the users in the building. [10.2] Building block is setbacked and provide landscape and green area in order to act as buffer zone for the busy street and roundabout. The green also helps to prevent pollutants from entering the building. Case Study

Porous Concrete As pavement for all the outdoor area to reduce surface runoff. The water is then be treated by underground soil before discharged to the river. (refer to building plan C) Area of use : ground floor area

Vo Trong Nghia Architects designed a kindergarten (in Vietnam) as a giant spiral ramp which the roof uses green roof with reserved walkway for pedestrian

1. THERMOBIMETAL BUILDING SKIIN

2. TRANSLUCENT CONCRETE (facing road) One side of the exhibition facing the busy roundabout, translucent concrete is used on that facade to give a sneak peek of the exhibition space to the pedestrain at the same time do not distract driver.

Building Facade is designed to allow for shadow casting into the interior space. Amount of light need to be controlled to reduce glare and heat gain Advantage of thermobimetal building skin: - reduce insallation of too many light sensors - reduce heat gain of the interior of building - the opening of the louver fins allow cross ventilation

Advantage of using translucent concrete: - allow penetration of sunlight - it is west-facing facade, the exhibition get the light penetration but reduced heat gain

Proposal Interior of exhibition *arrangement of the translucent wall is disconnected to allow cross ventilation.

3. LUMINOUS TEXTILE (facing courtyard) Luminous textile integrates multi-coloured LEDs seamlessly within fabric panels that also soften sound. Case study: Gallery Toto, Narita, Japan A digital gallery of state-of-the-art toilets presented by TOTO and Narita International Airport, boasting the Japan-first use of 17 luminous textile with Kvadrat Soft Cells panels.

At the exhibition, the wall (facing the inner courtyard) will be using luminous textile as wall facade. This wall will display toursit information or some historical facts about Kuala Kangsar / Royal town. This also makes the whole internal spaces as an information hub/ exhibition/gallery

The Gallery Walk - a glass hanging platform spanning about 20m. This area is not suppose to have vertical column as it will disrupt the activities at the amphitheater below.

Open staircase is supported by the column at the perimeter of the courtyard. Glass railing is secured to the metal stringer and bolted to the column (bolted to allow for easy dismantling for future reuse)

The structure of the platform will be supported by space frame on both sides and cable rod from column at the perimeter of the couryart is used for extra support

6. INTERACTIVE WINDOW DISPLAY Interative window display showcase the technology at the same time message can be delivered in a more effective & efficient way.

7. GREEN ROOF & CREEPER Advantage of green roof & creeper: - lower ambient temperature - elevated park for public - temporary retent water form hard surface runoff - filter pollutants from entering the building - absorb noise

- Trees are planted along the perimeter of main street (roundabout) to filter sound and air polutants from main street. - Green roof incorporated with bike lane and pedestrian lane to promote people to utilise the green roof as park - Creeper plant acts as railing and the planter box allow the structure of the dome to be hidden


THE HERMIT RECYCLE-HUB

Under this section, a 2-week architectural design was done in the group of 2. Architectural solution is proposed to solve some site issues in Kuala Kangsar in the form of “parasite”. Annie Cha and the author proposed a recycle hub after goign through the site analysis.
