The name of "Pudu" 富都

History of Pudu

Pudu in Chinese means a "rich city".

How the streets are name

The name of "Ban Shan Ba" 半山芭

-According to the elder generation, along t he road from Jalan Pudu to the t-junction at Pudu Jail, it was an underdeveloped and remote area, almost a forest area.

In 1980s, they named Pudu as "rich city" because Pudu is congested with all the lower class people(quite poor).

They are looking forward Pudu area to be rich.

-In chinese, "ban shan ba" literally means forested area or country side. Even many commercial buildings are built now, people still used to call it as "ban shan ba".

-Brunei area is made up of few Jalan Brunei.

-Jalan Pasar also known as electronic street, it has more than 15 years of history.

-printing business is the hottest, thus people called it Printing street. It hits its peak at 1970s.

-At the back of Jalan Pasar is the location of wet market - In 1970s, peddlers are operating without license.

-Jalan Sayur also known as "wei sek gai" in which many food peddlers open stalls at night.

-60 years ago, Jalan Sayur was a lane selling groceries, in chinese people called groceries as vegetable(sayur). Therefore, they named it as Jalan Sayur.

Jalan Pudu is originally doctor street but now become pawn street.

Drama 家在半山芭 Drama <My Kampong Days> is made and Pudu as the backdrop of this drama to show the life of people living in Pudu. This indicates the realization of people on Pudu

Jalan Sayur

Jalan Sayur Food Street (Wai Sek Kai-为食街) is popular Chinese food markets for the locals.

-Street food stalls start operating at around 6.30pm, owned and operated by the senior citizens.

-What makes the food stalls more popular is the taste and flavour of local condiments that they use here.

-The only part in Pudu which attracts younger generations to come (working class people, college students and families which are from other areas)

Jalan Pasar -“Electronic Street” is just some peddlers used up the corridor space in front of the shops to set up stalls.

-The number of stall has grown until now more than 100 stalls.

-However, the stalls here are illegal even it has history of more than 15 years.

-Nowadays, with the emergence of foreigners and also the increase of competitors caused individual business has dropped dramatically.

Pudu Wet Market -Located along Jalan Pasar Baharu -One of the largest wet markets in Kuala Lumpur -Started operation before Malaysia independent (year 1940) -Large paved area ringed by two and three-story apartment buildings and shop lots. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s opened to the sky but almost seamlessly roofed by hundreds of market tents.

-Variety of products is offered to satisfy the customers from difference races therefore visited by different races -Some of the tents are left there until the next day to start over again thus blocking the road.

Normally, the Chinese run their businesses as dried fishes and herbs in the dry market.

Market tent left after the peak hour.

The rubbish and the terrifying smell.

The number of rats are horrible.

Street Heritage

-It was the Pudu Dam, located where the Pudu Bus Stand is now.

-By 1900, as Petaling Street became overcrowded, the British government moved the residents to Pudu and Batu Road, and shops and houses were built rapidly to accommodate the need.

-New railway was constructed to connect the sites of Pudu Bus Station, Pudu Jail and Jalan Pudu all the way to Cheras.

-Pudu gradually expanded with the earliest shops built along the main road, near the Pudu market. It started to thrive and became popular, but mainly to complement the busy Petaling Street area.

-People flocked to Pudu for the market, which was originally located in Jalan Pasar (the Electronics Street), hence the name.

-In the 1950s, as the city was recovering from World War II, the agricultural land of Pudu was converted for commercial development and a cluster of four- to five-storey buildings emerged behind the old shophouses.

Some old facades have been replaced by modern structures. Development is taking shape and weaving into the lives of Pudu community.

Hints of Art Deco could also be spotted.

Mix of old and new: The landscape at Pudu has changed dramatically as the city grew rapidly, however a few shophouses built back to 1890s can still be found along Jalan Pudu.

Part of its culture: The spiral staircases and utility spaces such as laundry rooms, bathrooms and toilets portray the living culture of Pudu

School & Provinces/Clans -Pudu is a very traditional area for Chinese, therefore many Chinese school and provinces were built.

-Many of the provinces and societies were concentrated in Petaling Street nearby, therefore the history of the provinces and societies in Pudu aren't long.

-There were total of 5 chinese primary school in Pudu, Chong Fah Phit Chee, Kung Min, Chin Woo, Jalan Imbi and Sam Yoke(Sam Yoke was closed).

-Number of students drop dramatically in 5 years mainly due to the moving out of chinese from Pudu.

-Efforts (renovation & maintenance of school) were made in order to attract more sudents.

-Some of the provinces in Pudu donated a lot of money in these effort like Chha Yang(the most active and contributing association)

Demolished Significant Buildings 3 Cinemas There were 3 well-known cinemas: 大华戏院, Majestic Cinema (beside da hua bus stop) 金华戏院, Metropole Cinema (Jalan Pudu beside a restaurant) 星光戏院, Star Cinema (replaced by E-mart).

-One of the main source of entertainment.

Pudu Jail -The historical Pudu jail is a national treasure but due to its black history and the structure itself located in the middle of Kuala Lumpur, it faced to be demolished.

-Been problem to the ever growing fast paced city center causing obstacles to developments that include road widening projects, new buildings & etc.

-According to the government, restoring the pudu jail itself would require a huge sum of money.

-Now, it is only remained with the main entrance of the Pudu Jail.

Built by British colonial government between 1891 and 1895.

-The pudu jail was was built on the site of a former Chinese burial ground.

-During World War 2 the Japanese occupation forces incarcerated many allied prisoners of war there.

Old Peng Hwa Food Court -Peng Hwa Food Court which is red light district, was also a hot spot before year 2008 as compared to it is now.

-Had larger floor area and with some illegal food stall being set up beside the food court and the food court was illegally extended.

-Local council demolished some part of the food court and demolition called off after senator's appeal.

-Stall operators and the food court were temporary allowed to operate until chinese new year 2008 is over. But after that, there is no follow-up action or information on the demolition of the food court.

-The food court is now still operating after renovation.

-Activity of prostitution still ongoing -Number of customers has greatly reduced.

Provide a platform that plays the role as traditional chinese cinema Film a video about the history of Pudu (from past to present) and show to the public to increase their awareness toward Pudu.

Example:

Old movies to be played in the public so that public especially elder people can recall their memories in 1970s.

Example:

Preventative Action promoting the voices of civil societies and local residents in development-related decisions. suggesting improvements to land-use, urban planning and heritage policies in order to make Pudu a more livable and holistic city which does not neglect its historic roots.

Were built between 1970 to 1990.

Some were renovated to 5 stories high.

Consideration on the overall outlook of the project to complement to the adjacent buildings

Vegetation

Understand the size, type and benefits of the chosen vegetation on site so that green areas can be incorporated into proposed design.

Create the ambience on site while acting as green lung in a condensed urban area.

Recommendation: Bring in more greenery to lighten up the proposed site.
