HOW TO RESPOND TO HOMELESS PEOPLE The life of a homeless person is undoubtedly tough, but of all the challenges they face, the loss of human dignity in the eyes of the public is perhaps one of the toughest to bear.

It’s important to remember that the homeless are human like everyone else, so how you respond to them can go a long way towards making them feel better. • Body Language – If you come across a homeless person, make eye contact and stay aware of your body language. Maintaining eye contact helps the homeless person feel acknowledged, and something as simple as a smile can brighten their day. • Greetings – A basic ‘hello’ can turn into a small conversation, which can happen if the other person wants to talk. Just keep it respectful and don’t take offence if they don’t want to chat. • Safety – Safety has to be at the top of your mind at all times. So rather than offering shelter in your home, working with homelessness advocates and professionals to find solutions would be a better alternative. • Money – If you’re going to give money, don’t proceed to tell a homeless person how to spend it. An alternative to giving money is to offer to buy a meal if they’re hungry.
