TOP 6 REASONS TO VISIT AJARA
THERE ARE MANY REASONS TO VISIT ADJARA BUT HERE ARE OUR TOP 6:
1. GEORGIAN HOSPITALITY AND GOODWILL Exceptional hospitality and the goodwill of the Georgian people make every trip to Georgia very special. As a guest in Georgia, you will not only experience unparalleled hospitality, but you will also be astounded by the genuine kindness of the Georgian people.
3. HISTORICAL AND MODERN ARCHITECTURE Batumi is one of the oldest cities in Georgia founded as before the Common Era. The initial settlement “Batus” is mentioned in sources from the 4th century BCE. The city’s unique history has contributed to the city’s vast architectural diversity. In the 19th century, during the “Porto Franco” period, European architects completed a number of interesting architectural projects. Later during the soviet and post-soviet times, Batumi was developed into a popular seaport and tourist destination. To this day, Batumi is still distinguished by a variety of buildings of different architectural styles.

2. THE CULTURE OF GEORGIAN SUPRA AND TRADITION OF TAMADA The Georgian Supra (a traditional feast) has no equivalent around the world. The culture of toasting does exist in many cultures; however, the Georgian “Tamada” or toastmaster has no parallel. The role of the Tamada is to lead the Supra. The Tamada is considered to be the most honorable member of a traditional Georgian Supra. The ideal Tamada is well educated, has extensive knowledge of Georgia’s history and culture, is eloquent, is sociable, has a good sense of humor and has musical ability. The Tamada should be able to lead a series of toasts on a variety of topics. He should also be able to entertain guests with poems, songs and interesting stories. The Georgian Supra is a fundamental element of Georgian identity, which is why the tradition has been preserved to this very day. In total, there are approximately 300 different toasts, some of which are obligatory for each Supra, regardless of its duration.

HISTORIC FIGURES WHO HAVE VISITED BATUMI John Steinbeck
In the summer of 1947, John Steinbeck, an American writer along with the legendary war photographer Robert Capa began their journey to the Soviet Union. In his “Russian Diary” Steinbeck describes Georgia with particular admiration and pays great attention to Batumi with its beautiful landscapes, tropical climate and natural diversity. Many health resorts were located in Batumi at that time and citizens of the Soviet republics had to work really hard to get a chance of spending their holidays there. “We have come to believe that the majority of Russians hope to go to Georgia, and not to heaven when they die, since Georgia has a wonderful climate, rich soil and a small private ocean”- he wrote.
Mikhail Bulgakov The famous Russian writer visited Batumi twice, first in 1921, when he came to Caucasus in search of more favorable conditions for his creative life. Bulgakov had even planned migration from Batumi to Turkey, but returned to his homeland in the end. The second visit took place in 1928 when Bulgakov arrived in Batumi with his wife, visited Green Cape, and decided to write his “Master and Margarita” novel. He is the author of a play called “Batumi”, which was written for the 60th anniversary of Stalin.
Since its founding, Batumi has often attracted foreign visitors and people of different professions, interests and social status visited it at different times. Among many such visitors, there are people of special interest. 30 AJARA Life Magazine

During these two months in the city, Yesenin, managed to fall in love with two girls - Shagane Talyan, whom he dedicated a poem “Shagane, oh my Shagane!” and someone known as Kabtsova, whom he jokingly introduced to his friends as his new wife . Evenings spent with his new friends in Batumi, had a very positive influenced on his creative work. A poem “Anna Snegina” and dozens of others were written here, including those dedicated to the city.
Nobel Brothers In 1873, the founders of “Branobel” company went to the Caucasus in search of cheap resources. Already in 1875, in Baku, they established Nobel Brothers Oil Extracting Partnership, which then became the largest company of the Russian Empire. Baku-Tbilisi-Batumi was chosen as a transit route for oil transportation which has contributed significantly to the establishment of the “free port” regime in the city of Batumi. Nobel brothers have made a noticeable contribution to the construction of the Baku-Batumi pipeline, railway and Batumi Oil Terminal and were the first to transport oil from Batumi to Europe. In 2007, the house that once belonged to the Nobel brothers was transformed into a Technological Museum of Nobel Brothers, where in addition to the Nobels’ achievements, one can also get acquainted with the accomplishments of the Rothschilds and Mantashev, tea and tobacco extension process in Adjara and development of printing industry in Batumi. WEDDING IN GEORGIA
WEDDING TRADITIONS Georgia is a bright hospitable country with beautiful mountain landscapes, the delicious variety of national dishes, ancient temples, and unique wedding traditions. Furthermore, the marriage registered in Georgia is valid throughout the world.
38 AJARA Life Magazine
The real Georgian wedding is a bright bustling colourful event during which many of old traditions are respected. Traditionally, a huge number of guests is invited to the Georgian wedding – their number may exceed several hundred. Of course, not all modern couples follow all the old national traditions of their ancestors. But most of the young still prefer traditional weddings. Before the ceremony, the couple must go through three stages: the courtship, engagement and wedding ceremony. Earlier in the old days, parents were involved in the choice of the bride or groom. Now the young choose their life partners, following their hearts. The only important point is that marriage must be approved by the parents of both sides. On the day of the wedding, the beautiful ceremony of entering to the grooms’ house is held. First, the groom goes up to the roof of the house and releases a white bird. Then he goes down to the bride, and they are treated to the glass of wine. The groom makes a sip and then puts the engagement ring to the glass of wine and passes it to the bride. In the end, the groom gets the ring, hands it to the bride and says beautiful words of love and fidelity. Almost all couples get married at church and register their marriage the same day. The feast is often held in a restaurant because the house can not fit such a huge number of guests. During the celebration, the tables burst from a variety of dishes and drinks. Tamada says beautiful toasts – the first in honour of the bride and groom. The guests present expensive presents or money for the newlyweds. In general, the Georgian wedding is a colourful fun-filled memorable spectacle. If you manage to take part in it, you will definitely have a good time. In recent years, many foreign couples prefer to celebrate their weddings in Georgia – to get married in beautiful churches, make great wedding pictures on the background of the Georgian nature and celebrate on Georgian traditions. It was here that he recognized his desire to delve deeper into this world, an aspiration that led him to explore
diverse culinary traditions from around the globe. Along this path, he enthusiastically participated in professional competitions, fine-tuning his skills and expanding his knowledge. European, Asian, and the ever-enchanting Georgian cuisines became Giorgi’s playgrounds. With each cuisine, he honed his techniques and refined his palate, mastering the art of blending flavors, textures, and traditions into culinary symphonies. “In Georgia, the Guest holds a paramount role. Every Guest is ensured to relish in the delectable delights

For Giorgi, the location of the restaurant within the historical heart of the city, offering a breathtaking view to the Bridge of Peace, serves as his ultimate motivator. The captivating panorama acts as a canvas for his culinary creations, inspiring him to infuse his dishes with not just taste, but also visual delight. In the realm of gastronomy, Chef Giorgi Tigishvili’s journey is a testament to the power of passion, dedication, and a relentless pursuit of perfection. With every dish he crafts, he paints a story that speaks of tradition, innovation, and the warmth of Georgian hospitality.

“ICON OF THE VIRGIN MARY WITH THE CHILD” www.ajaramuseums.ge The fact that Batumi is a city of museums is once again confirmed by the fact that the city has recently expanded with the newly renovated Museum of Religion. In the museum you can see interesting exhibits, including the icon “The Virgin Mary with the Child”. The history of icon painting begins at the beginning of the 6th century, the existing samples were of a more symbolic nature. We can assume that icon painting as a direction was more associated with the catacombs until the 6th century. Luke the Evangelist is considered to be the first icon painter who painted the icon of the Virgin Mary (Hodegetria type). The art of iconography, which originated in theology, was enriched from era to era and obviously acquired both ethnic and cultural, as well as geographical characteristics, even in terms of the availability of paint and minerals. At the beginning of the 20th century, after the Sovietisation of Georgia, the patterns of icon painting were designated as works of art and assigned to museums. As the great fathers of spirituality used to say – the depiction on an icon is a kind of sermon with colours and lines. This is a Bible for those who cannot read.

Today we no longer argue that iconography is worship and not art, but the debate about Byzantine, later, Greek and Georgian forms of canonical iconography continues today. The story of how the 17th-century Greek canonical icon came to the Museum of Religion goes back to the 1960s. The footsteps of the “Pontic Greeks” from the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas to the Museum of Religion go through the private histories of several generations and will enchant you more than the Georgian mythological legend of Amiran you heard in your childhood. It is believed that the icon “The Virgin Mary with the Child” belongs to Greek physician Timoleon Triandapili, who died within the walls of the Xenon (hospital) on the site of today’s Batumi Art Institute. The path of the icon leads to the Cathedral of St. Nicholas. Then it all disappears, lost, reddened, and painted with a Soviet palette. Miraculously rescued, the icon preserves not only its sanctity but also personal stories behind which lie the achievements of a multicultural society, and, to our surprise, it coexists with time in enviable peace. COLONNADES The idea to construct Colonnades in Batumi belongs to the local doctor Ivane Mchedlidze. He brought the project with him in 1933-1934 from a professional trip to Sorrento city, Italy. The project was completed under the supervision of Bogdan Kirakosyan, an architect from Batumi. This structure used to serve as a gate to the seashore which used to be closer to it than today. Years later, the shoreline receded and the sea moved back further from the construction. Despite this, colonnades remain one of Batumi’s most frequented landmarks and a popular meeting place in the city. You will meet similar colonnades at the entrance of Batumi Central Park.

THE STATUE OF MEDEA On the Europe Square stands the statue of Medea, princess of Colchis. Created by Davit Khmaladze, the monument symbolizes the wealth and strength of the country. According to antique mythology the youngest daughter of Aeets the legendary king of Colchis fell in love with the leader of Argonauts’ crew, Jason, and helped him to steal the golden fleece. Medea had in-depth knowledge of herbs and possessed healing gifts. As the legend has it, she could rejuvenate a person which is why Medea was perceived as a goddess and temples were dedicated to her. The term ‘Medicine’ originates from the name – Medea.

The venture was initiated by Batumi Policemeister’s wife, Ketevan Zhuruli. Like in other theatres of Georgia, plays were held for charity here. Those engaged in the drama art moved from building to building but hardly ever lacked the attention of the audience.

This museum is set up in the same building where Nobel brothers’ crude oil refinery partnership ‘Batumi Kantora’ was located around a century ago. Up to 2,000 museum exhibits depict the examples of technological innovation introduced by Nobel brothers, Rothschilds and Mantashev in Batumi, at the end of XIX and in the beginning of XX centuries. AJARIAN CUISINE Georgian cuisine is known for its colorful diversity, use of different techniques and traditional table layouts. There is no similar term or concept in the world for a Georgian Supra, a feast of epic proportions and diverse dishes led by a toastmaster or Tamada. Tamada, besides leading toasts to a variety of subjects, should also guide the evening and entertain the guests with song, poetry, and storytelling. Toasting tradition is prevalent throughout the Caucasian countries; however, the Tamada is a uniquely Georgian phenomenon. Traditional Georgian dishes such as Satsivi, Mtsvadi, Khachapuri, Mchadi, Khinkali, Chkmeruli, Pkhali with walnut, bean, etc. dominate in Ajarian cuisine as well. Apart from traditional Georgian dishes Ajara is also famous for its local cuisine. Resulting from the specific lifestyle in the highlands of Adjara, milk products represent the main component

OUR COMMUNITY COUNTS OVER 700 MEMBERS, WE ARE ALWAYS HAPPY TO MEET NEW MEMBERS AND DO NOT DIVIDE PEOPLE INTO CATEGORIES. OUR DOORS ARE ALWAYS OPEN TO EVERYONE!
