WEDDING IN GEORGIA

WEDDING TRADITIONS Georgia is a bright hospitable country with beautiful mountain landscapes, the delicious variety of national dishes, ancient temples, and unique wedding traditions. Furthermore, the marriage registered in Georgia is valid throughout the world.

38 AJARA Life Magazine

The real Georgian wedding is a bright bustling colourful event during which many of old traditions are respected. Traditionally, a huge number of guests is invited to the Georgian wedding – their number may exceed several hundred. Of course, not all modern couples follow all the old national traditions of their ancestors. But most of the young still prefer traditional weddings. Before the ceremony, the couple must go through three stages: the courtship, engagement and wedding ceremony. Earlier in the old days, parents were involved in the choice of the bride or groom. Now the young choose their life partners, following their hearts. The only important point is that marriage must be approved by the parents of both sides. On the day of the wedding, the beautiful ceremony of entering to the grooms’ house is held. First, the groom goes up to the roof of the house and releases a white bird. Then he goes down to the bride, and they are treated to the glass of wine. The groom makes a sip and then puts the engagement ring to the glass of wine and passes it to the bride. In the end, the groom gets the ring, hands it to the bride and says beautiful words of love and fidelity. Almost all couples get married at church and register their marriage the same day. The feast is often held in a restaurant because the house can not fit such a huge number of guests. During the celebration, the tables burst from a variety of dishes and drinks. Tamada says beautiful toasts – the first in honour of the bride and groom. The guests present expensive presents or money for the newlyweds. In general, the Georgian wedding is a colourful fun-filled memorable spectacle. If you manage to take part in it, you will definitely have a good time. In recent years, many foreign couples prefer to celebrate their weddings in Georgia – to get married in beautiful churches, make great wedding pictures on the background of the Georgian nature and celebrate on Georgian traditions. Welcome To

GORI

42 AJARA Life Magazine

The original fortress, constructed on a hilltop, was named Gori (meaning hill in English), and was mentioned in the Georgian chronicles as early as the VII century. Some historians believe that the fortress was built by Byzantine Caesar Heraclius to store ammunition battles against the Persians. Just after the XI century the area became an active center for trade. According to some historians, this was due to David the Builder founding the town. Because of its geographical location, enemies frequently targeted the fortress, as conquering it enabled control of the whole Shida Kartli region. The fortress has been invaded many times and controlled by Ossetians, Iranians and Persians, amongst others. The stronghold has been repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt. The current iteration of the fortress was built in 1774, during the reign of Erekle II, but was significantly damaged by an earthquake in 1920. The Stalin Museum includes the memorial house where Joseph Stalin (1879-1953) was born, a museum building with a tower, and Stalin’s personal train car he used to visit Tehran, Yalta, and Potsdam. There are many unique exhibits displayed here, including personal belongings and collections of paintings, photos, films and other important historical artifacts.

Gori (Georgian: გორი ) is a city in the Shida Kartli region of Georgia most famous (or infamous) for being the birthplace of Joseph Vissarionovich Jughashvili, better known as Stalin. Today, surprisingly, it does not look much different from when Stalin ruled the USSR. Gori is also located a short drive from Uplistsikhe, an ancient Silk Road cave city and former regional centre of pagan worship.

By bus Many marshrutkas run daily between Tbilisi’s Didube market and the central square of Gori. If you’re arriving with the metro, go directly through the market (one-story houses) until you reach a square with only marshrutkas on it - just ask one of the drivers. Buses leave hourly from about 7am to 8pm, and the ride costs 3 GEL a person.

The name Gori may look and sound like the plural form of the Russian word for mountain (горы, GO-ry), but the name of Gori, incidentally meaning hill (singular) in Georgian, is much older than the first Russian contact with the Georgian kingdoms in 1500s. Get in By train Many trains run through Gori on their way to or from Tbilisi. Tickets can be purchased at local train stations. Last train to Borjomi leaves at 18:00.

By Taxi Another option is to take a taxi, which also leave from Didube bus station. Listen for the cab drivers calling out “Gori, Gori,” and get in their car. These cars leave as soon as they are full, so your wait could be anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour. The fare for one person in a shared cab should be 5 GEL. If you do not wish to share a taxi with others, then the cost should be about 20 GEL. Be sure to negotiate this with the driver before you get in the car. AJARA Life Magazine 45

In the summer of 1947, John Steinbeck, an American writer along with the legendary war photographer Robert Capa began their journey to the Soviet Union. In his “Russian Diary” Steinbeck describes Georgia with particular admiration and pays great attention to Batumi with its beautiful landscapes, tropical climate and natural diversity. Many health resorts were located in Batumi at that time and citizens of the Soviet republics had to work really hard to get a chance of spending their holidays there. “We have come to believe that the majority of Russians hope to go to Georgia, and not to heaven when they die, since Georgia has a wonderful climate, rich soil and a small private ocean”- he wrote.

Mikhail Bulgakov The famous Russian writer visited Batumi twice, first in 1921, when he came to Caucasus in search of more favorable conditions for his creative life. Bulgakov had even planned migration from Batumi to Turkey, but returned to his homeland in the end. SCULPTURES BY EUROPEAN AUTHORS FROM THE AJARA ART MUSEUM. We offer the readers of the magazine “Ajara Life” sculptures by European masters from the 18th and 19th centuries from the museum’s permanent exhibition.

EMILIO SANTARELLI (1801–1886) - Italian sculptor of the Neoclassical movement. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. He worked in the genre of portraits and created religious and mythological compositions as well as monumental sculptures. Among his works, the statue of Michelangelo for the portico of the Uffizi in Florence (1840) and King Leopold II of Belgium in the Republic Square in Livorno (1848) are worth mentioning. One of the exhibition’s most important works of art is the sculptural composition. This classically exquisite /Nymph and small faun. 1852/. The sculpture depicts the constant companions of Dionysus, the ancient god of wine and merriment. A nymph, the embodiment of the elemental forces of nature, is depicted as a beautiful girl lying on an animal skin and holding a bunch of grapes in her right hand. At the same time, the goat-legged faun stares down at her.

VITTORIO POCHINI - Madam De La-Vallierre (1860-1908) It is an example of the Art Nouveau style that developed in Europe at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The figure represents one of the favourite women of the French King Louis XIV - Louise de la Valliere. The model is depicted in a 3/4 perspective, with her head turned slightly to the left, adorned with a thin lace shawl and a decorative headdress.

UNKNOWN ARTIST - Woman with veil/ Due to its artistic and stylistic characteristics, this portrait is an example of the era of classicism that prevailed in Europe at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century. The portrait bust shows a young woman with her head bowed, covered by a thin veil. Her chest is adorned with floral jewellery attached to the knot of a lace dress with a neckline.

ANTONIO KANOVA- (1757_1822) - one of the most important Italian Neoclassical sculptors of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He moved to Rome in 1781 and soon became the most famous sculptor of his time in Europe. Canova created two types of works: large public, official sculptures, and compositions on mythological themes. Cupid and Psyche (copy) ” The story is taken from the novel “Metamorphoses” by the ancient Roman writer Apuleius in which the love story between the beautiful daughter of a king and Cupid, the son of the goddess Aphrodite, is told. This sculptural composition is a copy, the originals of which are kept in the Louvre in Paris and the Hermitage in St Petersburg.

BATUMIHOME.GE 1.
