ALI & NINO THE KISS OF MOVING STATUES
“I designed it at a moment when I was hurt, so I wanted to make what was my idea of being together for a moment, with someone, and then you lose it,” “ Tamar Kvesitadze ”
Created by the USA-based Georgian sculptor, Tamar Kvesitadze, a kinetic sculpture of Ali and Nino is undoubtedly one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Boulevard.
7-meter constructions of a man and a woman perform a circular motions for 8-10 minutes eventually merging into each other.
The work was designed in 2007, but only installed in 2010. Made of steel discs, it weighs 7 tons and is 8 meters high. Its construction took 10 months and both figures are controlled by a computer. In addition to the movement, the monument also features spectacular, colorful lighting.
The sculpture was inspired by the Azerbaijani novelist Kurban Said’s eponymous novel. The sculpture symbolizes eternal motion, love and convergence of cultures. However, each visitor can have his/her unique emotions and associations after attending this performance.
To the people of Batumi, the city on Georgia’s Black Sea coast where it has since found a permanent home, it’s Ali and Nino.
To everybody who visits the city, it’s likely to be the abid-
ing memory of their trip: a moving (in every sense of the word) statue which slowly brings two lovers together for a short embrace, only for them to part almost immediately.
It’s impossible not to stand transfixed, bewitched almost, before its tragic beauty, for the full 10 minutes it takes to complete the full cycle of coming together and breaking apart. And then you’ll stand there and watch it again. And again. It’s truly mesmerising.
who are Ali & Nino?
Set mainly in old Baku, Azerbaijan, Ali and Nino is a sweeping novel of romance and adventure which tells the tale of Ali, a Muslim schoolboy from an aristocratic Azeri family who falls in love with Nino, a beautiful Christian girl with distinct European sensibilities. In order to be together they must overcome personal scandal, family blood feuds, World War I and the Bolshevik revolution.
In the end, they must choose between loyalty to their cultural beliefs and heritage, and ardent devotion to each other. They choose each other, only for Ali to die fighting the Bolsheviks as they advance on Baku.

GODERDZI PETRIFIED FOREST PRESERVED IN KHARITON AKHVLEDIANI MUSEUM OF AJARA“
In the Khariton Akhvlediani Museum of Ajara, the nature department occupies one of the most important places. Since the first years of its foundation (1908), remarkable exhibits have been collected here, among which geological collections stand out. Particularly important are the fossilised plant samples from the Goderdzi petrified forest.
The fossilised flora of Goderdzi is located in the southwestern part of Georgia, south of the Meskheti Mountains, east and west of the Arsiani Mountains, near the Goderdzi Pass (2025 m above sea level, 115 km from Batumi) (Fig. 1) in the headwaters of the Dzindze and Achariskali rivers. The geological history of the mentioned area is associated with volcanism several million years ago, which is why it consists of Neogene volcanogenic rocks known as the “Goderdzi Formation.”
Fragments of fossilised flora from the Tertiary period have been found in its eastern part. The area of the petrified forest is about 70-80 square kilometres.
Fifteen million years ago, a forest flourished here, which was then covered by erupted volcanic lava, and over time, the pieces of wood embedded in the rocks turned into opal. The remains of deciduous and coniferous trees (giant palms, magnolias, laurels, vines, figs, birches, hornbeams, beeches, etc.), fossilised and semifossilised trees and leaf imprints are the best preserved.
The fossilised flora of Goderdzi is the best example of paleogeography and the evolution of plants. It shows that the air and vegetation characteristic of the humid tropical climate belt dominated the Caucasus region at that time. We found evergreen and deciduous species in

the forests, shrubs and lianas, ferns, and grasses.
The beauty of the museum’s natural exposition is the opalised wood found in the headwaters of the Achariskali River (fig. 2) which would adorn any museum in the world with its size (diameter 50 cm), antiquity, and beauty. It is 15 million years old. (Fig. 3). Ajara’s geological department sent the “Twin” exhibit to the Harvard Museum as a gift.
One of the interesting exhibits is the petrified, opalised wood of a vine (Fig. 3) from the petrified forest of Goderdzi—length of the wood is 50 cm. The vine’s stem proves that a giant vine grew among us a million years ago. Even today, in Ajara and other parts of Georgia, there are many indigenous grape varieties, and wild vines thrive in the forests.
Recently, leading specialists from 7 countries worldwide have confirmed in a three-year research that Georgia is the cradle of viticulture and winemaking and that from here the grapevine and viticulture have spread throughout the world.
In the museum’s exhibition, samples of opalised and chalcedonised wood from the Goderdzi forest of straw, brown, red or black colour and oily lustre are displayed and kept in the depots. (Fig. 4, 5, 6, 7).
