Managing A New Look
*'
success g..,.., t tiYprHolf change and in the case of the 1990 Wranglers, the success of the 1989 team propelled manager Pat Kelly to Las Vegas along with pitching coach Gary Lance. Coach Bryan Little has become the manager of the Waterloo Diamonds. That success has also promoted most of the 1989 players, opening the door for more young, bright stars in the Padres' future.
Thking over on the field will be new manager, Steve Lubratich, carrying with him two Northwest League Championships in his two years with the Spokane Indians. He also brings with him a very methodical, deliberate style of baseball, a style that has been
very effective.
"l don't always play
a
conservative game," said
Lubratich, "but I do believe in fundamental baseball and stress solid pitching and defense. That's what will win games." Lubratich was a fundamental player in his eight years as a professional player. He spent parts of two seasons with the California Angels before joining the Padres as an instructor. Lubratich hails most recently from Riverside, California, where he was the manager of the Riverside Red \7ave last season. He took them to a record of 64-78 with a pitching staff that, in part, ended up in the Wranglers lineup last season. "lt's a pretty good jump from A ball to Double A
ba[[ in the Texas League," said Lubratich. "Hopefully they will all make the jump easily. We have a lot of guys that wi[[ be returning to Wichita and some guys up from A ba[[." To handle all those young, strong arms the Padres have sent Jon Matlack to Wichita as the pitching coach. He was the pitching coach for the Riverside Red \Uave last season and saw talent like Rafael Valdez and Jeremy Hernandez make their way toward the top.
Matlack enjoyed his time at the top, over 12 years in the major leagues, pitching for the New York Mets from1977-77 and with the Texas Rangers from 1978-83. The left-hander pitched in the 1973 World Series for the Mets
Managin$ A New Look (Gont'd) and appeared in three All-Star Games, winning co-MVP honors in 1975. Matlack was the
National League Rookie of the Year in 1972, posting a 15-10 record.
His focus in 1990 will be to bring his knowledge and experience to develop and regulate the young arms of the Wranglers pitchers, the comerstone of this years team.
lot of good kids with good arms," said Lubratich. "'We look at these guys as possibly being major league pitchers down the line." "\W'e have a
The more variery in the pitches, the more hitters need to know. Lonnie Keeter will be there to back up both the hitters and
the position players as a coach. Keeter has been the manager of the Padres rookie club in
Scottsdale, Arizona for the past two seasons. Prior to joining the Padres, he was a college coach for

Managinâ‚Ź A New Look (Gont'd) eight years, two years at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and six at the University of Utah. Keeter played four years professionally in the Boston Red Sox and Texas Rangers organizations. Keeter should be kept fairly busy with players like Jose Valentin, one of the Padres high hopes for the future, a good bet to begin the season at short stop. Valentin saw a little time in \Tichita at the end of the 1989
season. Keeter is also looking
forward to coaching the outfielders, possibly the best trio of any team in its class in the country. Returning at center field is Charlie Hillemann with \7il[ Taylor in left field and Mike Humphreys in right. These three have outstanding fielding capabilities, with radar systems set to gauge just about any ball as it comes off the bat and speed that turns even the most challenging hit into a routine out.
The only thing that may get by this group is a ball headed over the ourfield wall. looking to have strong defense and good pitching," said Lubratich, "that's basically what wins the games. \7e should also have good team speed and be able to put the ball in play." '{U(/'e're
The responsibility for all managers and coaches at this level of baseball is to prepare the players for their next step, in this case tiple A and Las Vegas. The challenge is to develop another team strong enough to win the Texas League \07estern Division and beyond, and to keep them in \Tichita long enough to do it.
"lt's one of the realities of baseball at the Double A [evel," said Lubratich. 'qW'e have a very talented ball club and the Padres have an extremely talented system full of bright prospects for the future. \7e just have to maintain a high level of play, no matter who is on the field. Believe me, we're going to win some games "

LawrencG-Dumont Stadium NEW PHASE II LOOK While Phase I of the renovarion improved the box seating, the concourse area and the general appearance of Lawrence-Dumont Stadium, Phase II has drastically altered the look of the stadium roof and the infield. Phase II will use $2.2 million of the $5.1 million that the City of Wichita has put into upgrading the ballpark. In 1989 fans enjoyed new plastic molded box seats, new concession stands, a new ornamental fence outside the stadium, a new sound system and a fresh coat of paint. In September the old roof was removed, as well as the infield light standards. The faded and worn infield turf was pulled up and carted away.
Throughout the winter months new steel support beams were put in place and the new roof began to take shape. The roof now contains
ten luxury sky boxes, a press area, two radio booths, a sound booth and a camera bay. New infield light standards are now placed in the concourse area, giving fans and players a better
view of the games. The luxury sky boxes are the highlight of this year's renovation. Each box has veranda seating, wet bar, air conditioning, radio and has been custom decorated by each tenant.
Another bright spot this season, especially for the team, is the new infield turf. A new drainage system was constructed before the turf was laid in March to provide faster draining during a rain and to reduce flooding in areas on the
field. From the time the first game was played in Lawrence-Dumont Stadium in the surlmer of 1934, through the renovations by the city
in 1978,
and especially roday, people have spent their summer
evenings watching baseball as the sun sets over Wichita. Lawrence-Dumont Stadium has been the site of the National
Lawrence-Dumont Stadium (Gont'd.) Baseball Congress World Series for 56 years and has been the home of such professional teams as the Braves, the Aeros, the Pilots and now in their second season, the Wranglers. This three-phase renovation plan began shortly after the purchase of the Wranglers by Bob Rich, Jr. of Buffalo, New York. A similar project took place two years ago with the construction of Pilot Field in downtown Buffalo. Rich bought the Wichita Aeros Triple A franchise in 1984 and moved it to Buffalo, renaming it the Bisons. The Bisons have now drawn over a million fans for two seasons in a row, a minor league record. Phase III will begin after the completion of the 1990 season. New bench back seats will be

Roberto Alomat WORKING FOR A LIVING
By Bill Plaschke Times StaffWriter
In 1987, Roberto Alomar was just one ofthe bright, young prospects in the San Diego Padres'future andwas playing Double A baseball here in Wichita. Now he's in the show and he's...working for a living. It is exactly one hour before the first pitch of the second game of the 1989 Padres season. The San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium seats still smell clean. The grass still looks new. The
popcom tastes great. And in a tiny room in the stadium basement, Roberto Alomar is dirty and sweating and breathing like an old man.
He is in the Padres' new batting cage. The air conditioning in here doesn't work yet. The pitching machine doesn't work yet either, throwing fastballs that screw into the green carpet about 20 feet in front of home plate. That's OK. Alomar blinks the salt out ofhis eyes and finds a patch of green 20 feet in front of home plate and challenges the machine to bring it. It does, and Alomar sends the ball back. Fastball, line drive. Fastball, line
drive. You could lean against the sides of the protective netting that surrounds that cage and never worry about getting hit because Alomar doesn't hit it there. He hits it straight, as if aiming not at the machine, not at the wall behind it, but at some distant point that only the 21-year-old sees. "Oh baby, baby," he shouts to no one, "Keep it coming." The switch hitter is hitting righthanded because, with the preponderance of right-handed pitching in the league, he won't bat that way much this year and it will inevitably become a weakness. Alomar believes in working on weaknesses. Working only on our 40
Roberto Alomar (Cont'd) strengths, he says, is the biggest weakness of all. Not that he is above jumping over and showing off... "Here, I'11let you see the other side," he shouts, hopping across the carpet and suddenly batting
homers... and still finishing fifth in the
Rookie of the Year voting. That, Alomar says, is tired. That invisible target he seems to be swinging at, last year it was survival, but this year it is respect. He wants to
floor dive back into the sheets. That's what it looks like. But that's not what it is. Spend a winter with him in Salinas, Puerto Rico, the tiny seaside fishing village where he grew up in a modest house with a family that included a baseball-playing father (Padres coach Sandy Alomar) and brother
left-handed. "You watch this." make sure he is never wrongly ranked Fastball, line drive. Fastball, line fifth among his peers again. In drive. Now it is 45 minutes before the game. Somebody Alomar believes in working on mentions that there will soon be about 25,000 people weaknesses. Working only on our upstairs waiting to watch
@adres catching prospect Sandy AlomarJr.). Spend one aftemoon with Roberto in ttre water. strengths, he says, is the biggest him play and, isn't he getting And duck. At the beach tired? house of his'second father' weakness of all. "Me, I'm not tired," he Nestor Pabon, a local says. "You don't worry about pharmacist, Alomar spends anything. tirEd." aftemoons diving off a trampoline into OK, so it looks like he can do this Tired, Alomar says, is finishing the backyard pool. He does bellykind of thing in the middle of the 1988 with the seventh-best September flops, he does flips. When he finally night. It looks like Roberto Alomar average in the National League (.330), can climb out of bed, slide on his belly decides to stay in the water, he grabs a with the best September second base to the refrigerator, pop to his feet for a bat and swings it undemeath the percentage fielding in the National surface, which has nothing to do with glass of milk, and then do a League (zero errors in 29 games), with spectacular, parallel-to-the-hardwoodacrobatics, but you have to figure that an overall .266 average with nine helps something.
Roberto Alomar (Gont'd) "People don't realize how hard he
works," said his father Sandy. "It looks natural, but a lot of it is work. He has always worked." One thing definitely natural for Alomar is his fine vertical leap. But even at that, he's only dunked a basketball a couple of times, and not in the last five years. "Of my two sons, he was always the baseball son, the one who would stay at the park all day," recalled his mother Maria in an interview this winter. "He not think of school, he not think of going out with friends, he think only of baseball. He was crazy for baseball." Alomar always thought that hard work would pay off. And at first, it did. After signing out of high school as a free agent, he skipped rookie ball and began his career, at age 17, at Class A Ctlarleston. The next year he was at the higher Class A Charleston. The next year he was at the higher
? o a O
Class A in Reno. The next year,
Double-A Wichita. Consecutive yearly averages of .293,.346 and .319 didn't hurt.
"I thought, you play well, you move up," Alomar recalled. "I always thought it was simple." But then came last spring. And complications. He had a tremendous exhibition season, hitting more than .300 and making every play in the field and everyone knew he would be this team's second baseman for as long as he wanted. But not just yet. For each of the previous two seasons, the Padres had gone
with
opening day rookie second basemen who had come straight from double-A. Both times the players-Bip Roberts in 1986, Joey Cora in 1987-had ultimately failed and been retumed to the minor leagues. The Padres didn't want this happening to Alomar. So he was
first
sent to Triple-A. Upon hearing news

Roberto Alomar (Gont'd) of the demotion, he cried for a solid hour. His emotional outburst, considering he had never played one
minute of Triple-A, angered his brother Sandy. "He had to leam, it's not that way to make the big leagues," Sandy, Jr. said. "Maybe it was good that he leam that." "Yes, I grew up that day," Roberto said. "Leamed." It was a quick lesson. Nine games into his Las Vegas career, he was recalled to the Padres. On April22,he was their starting second baseman. In
his first big league at-bat, against Houston's Nolan Ryan, he beat out a grounderto shortstop for a base hit. He spent the year
studying hitters cards and watching
hitters and
finally, gaining such
and received national attention when he appeared for the Reds in the AllStar game at his Riverfront Stadium.
The memories of that night continued through until October, when Sabo was voted Rookie of the Year, followed in the balloting by Chicago Cub first baseman Mark Grace, Dodger pitcher Tim Belchet Atlanta infielder Ron Gant and then Alomar. Throw out Belcher, who has no comparable stats and doesn't play every day anyway, and you see where Alomar could have easily been first.
His hitting-.266,9 homers,41 RBIs from such terrible batting positions (lst or 2nd) that during one September stretch, he came to the plate 22 times in a row with the

confidence that he prayed opponents would hit him the ball. "That's what I'm thinking out
there," he said, "Hit it to me, hit it to me. Then I think, 'I can catch it, I can catch it."' The results were, he may still be at second base in the year 2000. "I think right now, he has the best range of any second baseman in the game," said Padres shortstop Garry Templeton, with whom Alomar combined to help the Padres lead the league in tumed double plays last season with 147. "I think he tums the double play better than anyone. And he's only getting better." Not that there weren't more complaints last year. There was still the matter of Rookie of the Year. Despite spectacular fielding, he hit just .236 in the season's first half.
Cincinnati rookie third basemen Chris Sabo batted nearly 100 points higher
bases
empty-is
comparable to the others. Sabo hit.271
with
11 homers
and 44 RBIs,
Grace hit.296 with 7 homers and 47 RBIs, Gant hit .259 with 19 homers and 60 RBIs. Then you throw in fielding...none of the three are considered above average fielders.
"You throw in everything, I am higher than just the fifth place," Alomar said. "[f you take more than hining, put everything together, I don't finish worse than second. Maybe, even,I finish first." Both the charm and curse in the Rookie of the Year award is, you can only win it once. Alomar says he has put its memory behind him. He says there are other things to work on. "The All-Star game," he said,
"A
Gold Glove." He paused.
"Forget about those, a World Series is what I want," he said. "That's what all of us are really working for. Now, that's an award." Reprinted with permissionfrom the San Diego Padres' 1989 Magazinc.
