Among the new faces in the Wrangler dugout this season will be that of manager Keith Champion. "Champ" enters his third season in the Padres organization and Wichita represents his third consecutive promotion. Champion
managed the Padres SingleA affiliate, Waterloo, lA in the tr/idwest League in 1992 before moving up to Rancho Cucamonga of the California League last season. Prior to joining the Padres. he played and coached for ten years in the St. Louis Cardinals organization. Following an All-American career at Southwest Missouri State, Champion was drafted by the Cardinals and played from 1982 through 1984, reaching as high as St. Petersburg (A-Florida State League). Champion made the transition from the playing field to field coach with the Cardinals as he managed Savannah (1988 and 1989),
Springfield (1990)and Peoria (1991). Current Padres manager Jim Riggleman helped Champion land his first coaching job. Wrangler fans may notice a different managing style in 1994. "l'm not a drill sergeant by any means. I played for guys like that and didn't enjoy it, so why should I be that way?" Champion says. "l let the players have some leeway, I let them do their own thing as long as everything is in line." This season will not mark the first stop in Wichita for the St. Louis native. Champion was a catcher for the Edwardsville Civics team that advanced to the National Baseball Congress World Series in 1980.
"l remember the exciting baseball atmosphere in Wichita," says Champion. "The fans were great, too." Champ, wife Lee and newborn daughter Claire will be a welcome addition to Wichita this summer.

Pitchlng
Trainer
Coach Hailing from Cleveland,
Rick Adair
will be another new face on the Wrangler coaching staff as he begins his first season as a pitching coach in the Padres organiza-
tion. Rick succeeds Sonny Siebert who joined the Padres major league staff. Adair joins the Wranglers after spending the last two seasons as the Cleveland lndians' pitching coach. He began his coaching career in 1986 with the lndians' organization, serving at nearly every level including a 2 1/2-year stint at Triple-A Colorado Springs.
Adair was a third round draft pick of the Seattle ltzlariners in the 1979 June Free Agent Draft. He went on to play seven seasons in the lVariners' system and was one of their brightest prospects before an elbow injury prematurely ended his playing career. Baseball appears to be part of
Adair's genetic makeup. Rick's uncle is Art Fowler, former big league pitcher and pitching coach for a number of ball clubs. He is also a cousin to Wayne Tolleson who played with Texas, the White Sox and the Yankees. Rick and his wife Louisa have two sons, Dustin and Travis, and the Adair clan make their off-season home in Spartanburg, SC.
George Poulis enters his second season in Wichita and fifth with the Padres organization. Poulis looks forward to his second campaign with the Wranglers. "The Wranglers are an excellent organization," says Poulis. "l'm excited to be back." Poulis earned his bachelor's degree in sports medicine from Baldwin-Wallace (Berea, OH) in 1988. His senior year included working for the Cleveland Browns, which proved instrumental in deter-
mining his future occupation of sports medicine. Though still a
footballfan,
Poulis now prefers working in the sport of baseball. "l really enjoy the relationships
you build with ballplayers," says Poulis, "and I like the challenge of helping our players get back on the
field." Poulis joined the Padres organization in 1989, and served as the trainer for the Waterloo Diamonds (A, Midwest League) for three seasons. After working for a year in physical therapy, the Padres offered Poulis an opportunity to join the Wranglers staff for the '93 season.
George and wife Jenny spend
their off-season in Ocala, FL. where George works for It/id-Florida Physical Therapy.

The 26-year old Southern California native was having a solid season when on July 4th, he began a fireworks show in tVidland that lasted the entire month. In the six games from the Fourth of July to the ninth, Hosey hit six home runs, drove in 13 runs and batted a blazing .560. With the Double-A All-Star game in Vlemphis approaching on July 12, the switch-hitting slugger ivas added to the National League squad as a late replacement for a recently promoted player. Looking as if he had something to prove, Hosey went out and smashed a two-run home run and a triple on his way to a 3 for 4 performance while leading his team to a 12-7 drubbing of his American League counterparts. For his efforts, he earned the Star of Stars award given to the game's lVlost Valuable Player. Hosey's wild ride wasn't through yet. One week later on July 19, Wichita was playing host to the Texas League All-Star game. While teammates Billy Hall and Ray N/cDavid were selected to the squad, Hosey was originally overlooked, only to be added to the team once again just days prior to the big game. And once again, Hosey rose to the occasion. To the delight of more than 5,100 hometown fans, Hosey smashed two home runs, one from each side of the plate, to earn [Vlost Valuable Player honors. The hardware kept rolling in for Hosey as he was named lVinor League Baseball's Player of the lVonth in July. Hosey's totals for the month a .370 batting average, 8 home runs, 23 runs batted in and two All-Star game N/VP awards. Not a bad month. For his accomplishments, Hosey earned a promotion to Triple-A Las Vegas on July 29, but not without rubbing off a bit on right fielder Tracy Sanders before he left. Sanders, acquired mid-season in a trade with the Cleveland lndians, picked up where Hosey left off. On August 3rd, Wichita trailed second place rlr It/idland by six games in the battle for the right to "i+ play El Paso in the playoffs. With Sanders leading 't the way, the Wranglers fought back into contention heading towards the team's final home stand and a climactic five game show-

The Wranglers salvaged the final game of the road trip, returning to Wichita for the home opener with one win, nine losses and minus one pitching coach. With the Wranglers still needing one more victory to put themselves rn a solid playoff position, Wichita fans came out in force on Fan Appreciation Night. Trailing 12-6 with two outs in the eighth, the Wranglers staged perhaps the best comeback in Wichita baseball history. Grand Old Park early a century ago, optimistic prospectors scoured the West bank of the Arkansas River in hopes of striking it rich. Rumor had it that there was gold to be found in the rocky shores along the river. While few people were able to realize their dreams
of wealth, the land on the western bank of the Arkansas has provided priceless memories for many baseball fans. Since its 1934 completion, millions have witnessed the action on the ball diamond at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Though Lawrence-Dumont has been Wichita's baseball home for nearly 60 years, it was not the city's first ballpark. During the period 1905-191 1, Wichita's top quality baseball was played at Association Park, located at lVain and Levy. From 19121o 1933, the city's entry in the old Western League played ball at lsland Park. lt was also at that ballpark that National Baseball Congress founder Raymond "Hap" Dumont's first annual Kansas semipro baseball tourney was held. The 1931 tournament was the forerunner to the NBC World Series. By the mid-
1930's, however, economic hardships brought on by the Great Depression had taken a toll on professional baseball in Wichita. ln 1933 the city lost the lzzies to financial difficulties. Old
age was similarly unkind to lsland
Park. Rickety and dangerous, the ballpark finally gave way to a careless match. The city now faced a dilemma. While Wichita no
longer had a professional team, Dumont's two-week state tourney was flourishing. ln fact, shortly before the fire Dumont had drawn 5,000 to lsland Park to watch the Kansas state championship game. lronically, the same depression that had spelled doom for the lzzies gave new life to Wichita baseball. With the city facing serious financial difficulties, Dumont convinced Wichita city planners to use federal public works funding to build a new stadium on "Payne's Pasture" near the western banks of the Arkansas. Dumont would not only continue to stage his state tournament at the new site, but he would also put on a national semi- pro tournament there. Dumont accomplished quite a feat when he secured funding for the new facility as it was difficult to imagine a stadium being built just for an annual tournament. Completed by the Fourth of July in 1934, the Lawrence Athletic Field was named in honor of Robert E. Lawrence, one of Wichita's best known pioneers. The new stadium was immediately embraced by the city. Longtime Wichita Eagle sports editor Pete Lightner described the '34 state tourr'l nament at the time: "Kansans \_ _-/ will never forget I 1934. The field had not a single blade of grass . . the outfield was barren of all vegetation. But the stands were ready. Bleachers were put up to house the overflow and a big tournament was put over- in fact, the largest and most successful .
ever."
Dumont's national semi-pro
tournament took off during the early years of The Scoreboard at Lawrence-Dumont
Stadium .then (1950's) and now

shortstop Honus Wagner officially opened the inaugural NBC World Series in 1935. That tourney drew 100,000, a figure which surpassed the entire 1932 season attendance of the pennant-winning lzzies. The NBC continues its tremendous success today and will be celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the NBC World Series in August of 1994. The city paid tribute to the late Dumont's contributions to
Wichita baseball when the ballpark was re-dedicated as Lawrence- Dumont Stadium in 1978. Lawrence-Dumont's rich tradition has included other amateur baseball events as well. ln 1949 Wichita was the site for the final round of the NCAA College World Series. Fans who attended the second night of double-elimination tournament featuring Wake Forest, Southern California, St. Johns and Texas were provided with updates of the Jersey Joe Walcott-Ezzard Charles title fight. Texas won the national crown after defeating the Demon Deacons of Wake Forest 10-3. On numerous occasions, the U.S. National Baseball Team has prepared for internatronal competition with contests at LawrenceDumont. The '1984 squad sharp-
ened-up for the Los Angeles Olympics with a win against the Liberal (KS) Bee Jays. ln recent years, the Americans have faced off against the Japanese and the Cubans at the stadium. Lawrence Field would not host professional baseball until 1950
when Wichita acquired the St. Louis Browns' Class A team, the lndians. Between 1956 and 1958 the stadium was home to the N/lilwaukee Braves Triple A-affiliate, the Wichita Braves. After helping the Wichita Braves win the '57 American Association title, Bob "Hurricane" Hazle was called up to the big league club and hit .400 during the Braves' pennant run. It/linor League baseball was to abandon Lawrence Field again, however, as the Braves took their top farm team to Louisville following the 1958 season. Wichita would be without professional baseball until the Aeros came to town in 1970. The Aeros had the longest continuous run in Wichita since the lzzies during the early part of the century. From 1970 through 1984, the Aeros shared the stadium with the NBC. After two summers without pro ball, Larry Schmittou brought the Pilots to town during the '87 and 'BB seasons. Such talents as Carlos Baerga, Roberto Alomar

and Sandy Alomar, .lr. graced the field while the Pilots called Lawrence-Dumont home. Rich Baseball Operations, headed by President Bob Rich, Jr, purchased the NBC in 1 986 and then added the Wichita minor league franchise in 1989. With the new Wrangler team name came major changes to Lawrence-Dumont. The new ownership and city planners directed a three-phase, $5.'l million renovation that began in 1989. Phase of the project improved box seating, the concourse area and the general appearance of the stadium. During Phase ll dramatic changes were made to the stadium roof including the addition of ten luxury skyboxes and an improved press area with two radio booths, a sound booth, and a camera bay. New stadium lighting was also installed during the second phase. Phase lll brought the Hard Ball Cafe to the ballpark as well as new offices for the Wichita Baseball staff. While many crties have found it necessary to build new ballparks to capture the charm and tradition I
of days past, Wichita is fortunate to have a stadium with a rich heritage in addition to all the amenities of today's best facilities.

eing a family man is not always easy in the world of baseball. lt helps that Steve Shaad, the recently named Vice President/General Vlanager of Wichita Baseball lnc., has a family that enjoys spending time at the ballpark.
The success Wichita Baseball has enjoyed under Shaad's leadership can be attributed not only to his business and marketing expertise, but also to a solid set of family values that have led to the friendly atmosphere at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. "The niche I think Wichita Baseball fills in the community better than any other sports team is affordable family fun," said Shaad. "l think, as a father of five, that I am not only a beneficiary of that, but also am an excellent judge of whether or not a family can afford to come to this event." ln the five seasons he has served as General lr/anager of Wichita Baseball lnc., Shaad has been the constant force in helping turn a f ranchise that drew just 70,000 fans in 1 988 into the top sports draw in the state of Kansas in 1993. lt is because of his family, including wife Becky and sons Jordan, Jason, Jonathan, Jackson and Jonson, that Wichita fans can rest assured that Shaad is here for the long haul. "l made a conscious decision after a painful divorce seven years ago that I would put my family first over my career," Shaad said. "That decision is a big part of the reason why l'm so happy and content with what l'm doing here. I have a commitment to take Wichita Baseball as far as it can possibly go. I want to do a good job here because this is where I want to be. I am very fortunate that I have a wife and kids who enjoy coming out to the games and that enables me to spend more time with them during the season. I am also very lucky to have the type of job that enables me to bring my kids to work; in many professions that
wouldn't be possible." After seven years with the Wichita Wings, where he ultimately rose to General N/lanager, the former track and cross country star from Bonner Springs began his working relationship with Wichita Baseball in 1987 , serving as the General tt/anager of the National Baseball Congress World Series under the new ownership of the Rich Entertainment Group, ln 1988, following the purchase of Wichita's professional franchise by the Rich's, Shaad was offered the position of General Nrlanager of the newly formed Wichita Baseball, Inc. The decision to accept the challenge of turning around a struggling professional franchise was easy to make according to Shaad.
"l don't feel that anyone attends a sporting event out of a sense of guilt or obligation, but rather, because it is fun," said
Shaad. "l feel it's our responsibility to market our events in a way that will make it fun for people to come out to the ballpark. The Rich's and I have the same basic approach to business, marketing and life in general. ln the Rich's I found owners whose philosophies are so close to mine. This organization shows that it is possible to do business the right way and still be successful." Part of that way is giving people a reason to come to the ballpark. That same attitude also applies to Shaad's approach to creating the right atmosphere for the front office staff "We're in a fun industry," Shaad said. "We shouldn't be so concerned with little things that we don't take the time to enjoy ourselves. Baseball is fun-and the job should be treated that way. lf the employees can't have fun here how can we expect the public to?" .

Local fans wanting to catch a sneak preview of these future stars need to travel no fufiher than Lawrence-Dumont Stadium this summer. Though the San Diego Padres may be a couple of seasons away from contending in the newly-aligned National League Western Division, there is no question that a wealth of young talent can be found on the Padres' Double-A club. ln recenl years, Wrangler fans have had the pleasure of seeing future major league standouts such as Roberto Alomar, Carlos Baerga, Dave Hollins and Andy Benes take the field in L-D. Wranqler fans had a chance to see this lefthanded pitcher during his stint with Wichita Jast season.
