Genter of Plains and planes
ichita, Kansas is a city of proud heritage which boasts a flavor ofboth the cosmopolitan and the Old West. Located near the geographic center of the United States, Wichita was offrcially declared a community in 1870, but was established as a trading post for early westward travelers in 1863 by the legendary pioneer Jesse Chisholm who blazed the famous Texas-to-Kansas cattle trail years before. The entrepreneural spirit that led to Wichita's beginnings has continued as the cornerstone of the nation's 51st largest city. Wichita now boasts a population ofjust over 304,000, according to 1990 Census figures. Ironically, the city ranking just ahead of Wichita in terms of population is Buffalo, New York at 328,000. Wrangler fans will appreciate the comparison as the two cities share a common link - ownership of its professional baseball teams by Rich Products Corporation, based in Buffalo. From its humble beginnings as a small frontier town in the middle of the American plains, Wichita has become known as the Air Capital of the World with more than 60 percent of today's small
business aircraft presently manufactured in Wichita. As the largest city in Kansas,
Wichita serves as the economic hub for the region. In manufacturing and wholesale and retail trade, Wichita has become the leader. The institutions of higher learning have grown right along with the other of the city's institutions. The Wichita State University, with an enrollment of 17,000, is wellrespected for its academics and WSU etudcnt

an extension in Wichita, and two private colleges, Kansas Newman College and Friends University, round out a vast assortment of educational opportunities. Wichita also offers a variety of attractions as well, including Botanica Gardens, The Children's Museum, the Indian Center Museum, the Metropolitan Ballet, Old Cowtown Museum, the Omnisphere and Science Center, the Sedgwick County Zoo, Wichita Art Museum, the Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum, the Wichita Symphony Orchestra, the Music Theatre of Wichita and much more.
Wichita is the home of the Institute of Logopedics, the world's largest speech and hearing residential rehabilitation center. The city serves the entire region as a major medical center with four hospitals. There are a number ofseasonal events that annually feature opportunities for family enjoyment including, of course, Wichita -Wranglers Baseball and the National Baseball Congress World Series at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium, and the annual River Festival in May that highlights the spring season in Wichita. Some well-known personalities have roots in Wichita, including actors Don Johnson ("Miami Vice") and Kirstie Alley ("Cheers") and Detroit Lions running back Barry
Sanders. This past February, Wichita State student Kelli McCarty, a native of Liberal and Miss Kansas 1990, was crowned Miss USA at the annual pageant at the Century II Convention Center in downtown Wichita. The 2l-year old will represent America in the Miss Universe Pageant on May 17 in Las Vegas. Wichitans are known for their friendliness and generosity. It is their spirit, their ideas and determination, that have allowed the city to grow and prosper - and build for the future generations.

How To Score Wranglers fans can enjoy baseball more this summer by keeping score of the game. The best part about keeping score is that it's easy. All you need is a basic knowledge of baseball's rules. Experts use a simple code, which is based on numbering players by their positions.
Number Players As Follows
'l-Pitcher; 2-Catcher; 3-First Baseman; 4-Second Baseman; 5-Third Baseman; 6-Shortstop; 7-Left Fielder; 8-Center Fielder; 9-Right Fielder; DH-Designated Hitter.
Additional Symbols: lW for intentional walk, L for line drive, Kc for called out on strikes, B for bunt, and
a wavy line indicating a change, either for
a new pitcher or batter. Every time a batter goes to the plate, use
the number to indicate how he was retired or how he reached base. Fielding plays retiring batters or runners
also call for use of the numbers. For instance, the batter who grounds out to the shortstop is retired 6-3 in your scoring. lf he flies to the right fielder, merely use the ligure 9. lf it is foul: 9F. Slmplc Scor! Shccl
(carchar ro shodstop)

The three-phase renovation project began shortly after the purchase of the Wichita club by Bob Rich, Jr. of Buffalo, New York. Attendance at Wranglers games more than doubled in 1989 under the new ownership to 185,104 and then topped the 200,000-mark in 1990 at 218,109. In addition, lO2,62L fans attended the NBC World Series last August and the combined total of 320,730 -fans made Lawrence-Dumont Stadium the most popular sports arena in

With its striking new big league appearance and breathtaking view of downtown Wichita beyond the brightly painted outfreld fences, Lawrence-Dumont Stadium stands as a Kansas landmark gracing the banks of the Arkansas River. Lawrence-Dumont Stadium is named for Robert E. Lawrence, one of the city's founding fathers, and later, Ray "Hap" Dumont, founder of the NBC, was duely honored by having his name added to the facility which has been the site of the NBC World Series for over half a century. Lawrence-Dumont has also been the home of professional baseball teams named the Braves, the Aeros, the Pilots and now, in their

RICH B ASEB ALL OP ERAI ION S
A No-Nonsense Approach To Fun bought the franchise.
"Wichita just struck me
as a
great place to operate a baseball team,'he explains. "Plus I hated to
see it lose a franchise. I had seen that happen in Buffalo with the NBA and
MISL." Rich is President of Rich Products Corporation of Buffalo, N.Y.,
Bob and Mindy Rich join in the fun at Lanorence-Dumont Sta.dium. (Photo by
DanMoorc) By Derrick Grubbs Each employee of Rich Baseball whether they are locatoperations - Wichita or Niagara ed in Buffalo, Falls is issued a card that contains - "Mission Statement." The the R.B.O. statement begins with the credo: "To elliciently present the highest quality entertainment, service, facilities, products and value possible...." When Bob Rich Jr. purchased the Double-A Wichita franchise in 1988, he indeed set out on a mission. It was Rich who had purchased
Wichita's Triple-A franchise four years earlier and moved it to his hometown of Buffalo, New York. The Buffalo Bisons have drawn over one million fans each of the past three seasons and with Rich at the helm, a similar success story is being written
the nation's largest family-owned frozen foods manufacturer. Rich Baseball Operations is the corporate parent of the Wranglers, the Buffalo Bisons and the Class A Niagara Falls Rapids of the New York-Penn League. Rich also purchased the National Baseball Congress in 1986 which preceeded hie interest in the Wichita professional franchise. Mindy Rich, Bob's wife, holds the title of Executive Vice-President of R.B.O. and manages the day-to-day operations of the organization. She began with the Buffalo Bisons organization in September of 1985. Mindy is also Executive Vice President ofStadium Services, Inc. of Buffalo and President of Rich Communications Corp. She is also a member of the Triple-A Baseball Marketing Committee and in 1988 received the Rawlings Female Minor League Executive of the Year Award. Bob and Mindy aerve aa cochairpersons of Western New York United Against Drug and Alcohol Abuse, a program established for the prevention and education ofthe dangers of substance abuse. A strong community and business leader, Bob Rich is active on 18
corporate boards and in 1983, he earned the Buffalo News'Citizen of the Year Award. Hie keen business skills and shrewd marketing sense as a baseball operator have also been recognized.. Rich has been named the American Association Executive of the Year twice in the last five years, and in 1988, he was honored as THE SPORTING NEWS Minor League Executive of the Year. The Buffalo franchise has become a model for baseball franchises and is one of six finalists contâ‚Źnding for one of two major league expansion franchises to begin play in 1993. Pilot Field, located in downtown Buffalo, opened in 1988, and represents a $42 million commitment by the city government and private contributors to construct a facility that is a showcase for baseball at any level. The facility currently seats 20,000 and can be expanded to 42,000 when major league baseball comes to town. The same t54pe of commitment to professional baseball in Wichita has been initiated by the Riches. At their urging, the city council approved a $5 million, three-year project to refurbish Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. As customer service is the number-one priority for Wranglers staffmembers no shortcuts are taken to assure- the comfort and enjo5rment of fans attending baseball
at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. The best method of gauging the in the faces ofhappy fans those that leave the ballpark feel-ing good and can't wait to come back for more! success is
for the Wranglers.
In 1989, the Wranglers'first
year under Rich ownership, the club more than doubled its attendance from the previous aeason and last year drew a record 218,109 fans. Not only has Rich kept professional baseball in Wichita, but he has committed to provide the community with one of the premier organizations in minor league baseball. But the task was not easy. Upon attending his frrst game at LawrenceDumont Stadium in 1987, Rich found a dilapidated stadium, hot soda pop and cold hot dogs, broken water pipes in the restrooms and a variety of fan inconveniences. So Rich did what any resourceful entrepreneur would do he
