The Wichita Wranglers wel come a new manager for the 1993 campaign - Dave Trembley. Beginning his third season in the Padres organization, Trembley comes to Wichita after serving as skipper the past two seasons for the Charleston Rainbows of the Class A South Atlantic League. "l'rn looking forward to com-

ing to Wichita," says Trembley. "l've talked to both Bruce Bochy and Ed Lyirch (Padres' Director of N/linor Leagues), and they've told me great things about the community and the fans." Originally from Carthage, New York, Trembley earned a bachelor's degree in physical education and a N/laster's Degree in Education from State University of New York at Brockport. He joined the Cubs organization in 1984, teaching at the Rookie levei, and in 1985, managed a co-op team at Kinston (NC) in the Carolina League. He served in the Pirates organization from 1986 to '1 990 ln '1 987, he managed the Harrlsburg Senators (AA) to a 7l 63 record and the Eastern League Championship. For his accomplishments, he was named lhe Baseball America lt/inor League lVlanager Of The Year. After performing as Director of Bradenton Baseball Operations for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 'l 990, he joined the Padres organization, taking the helm at Charleston. Dave and wife Nzlichelle currently make their off-season home in Bradenton, FL. Trembley says the emphasis of his Wranglers coaching staff will be on teaching the fundamentals of the ganre and all "the little things" that make a team successful, like laying down a bunt or executing a hit & run play. "You get'em on, you get'em over, and you get'em in," says Trembley, who adds that the concept of "player development" extends beyond just the playing field. "This game is for the players to play, and for the fans to enjoy. But it's our job to make sure it's played the right way and with the respect that it deserves. "Not all major leaguers are in the big leagues. Our players will conduct themselves professionally, both on and off the field. The people in Wichita will take pride, as we will, in how we represent this community."

returns to his second sea son as the pitching coach for the Wichita Wranglers. Siebert joined the Padres organization in 1984, serving as a coach, scout or instructor for the past nrne years. He was the pitching coach for the Waterloo Diamonds (A, N/idwest) in 1991 prior to joining the Wranglers. Sonny was a major contributor to the success of the Wranglers pitching staff in 1992. Tim Worrell and Scott Sanders, two of the Padres top pitching prospects, enjoyed successful first-half seasons, earning both mid-season pro motions to Triple'A Las Vegas. Closer l\,4ark Ettles set a Wichita professional baseball saves record wilh22, while Pedro l\rlartinez had his best season as a Wrangler. And this past off-season, both Lance Painter and Scott Fredrickson were selected by the Colorado Rockies in the expansion draft. A former big league pitcher, Siebert is probably best known for his stint with the Cleveland lndians (1964'69). He also pitched for the Boston Red Sox, Texas Rangers, St. Louis Cardinals and Oakland A's, compiling an impressive win-loss record of 140-114 (.551)while also throwing a no-hitter during his 12year career.

George Poulis Hailing from Cleveland, OH, this self-proclaimed "midwestern boy" is looking forward to spending his f irst summer in the Plains. "Everything I hear about the Wranglers organization is top-

notch," says Poulis. "l'm excited about com ng to Wichita."

Poulis earned his bachelor's degree in sports medicine from Baldwin-Wallace College (Berea, OH) rn 1988. His senior year included working for the Cleveland Browns, which proved instrumental in determining his future occupation of sports medicine. Though still a football fan, Poulis now prefers working in the sport of basebal

"l really enjoy the relationships

you build with ballplayers," says Poulis, "and I like the challenge of helping our players get back cn the field " Poulis joined the Padres organization in '1 989, and served as the trainer for the Waterloo Diamonds (A, lVidwest League) for three seasons. He worked in physical therapy last year, spending time with his famlly, before receiving the opportunity from the Padres to join the Wranglers staff for the '93 cam pa r9 n.

'round the bases after his storybook blast off Dennis Eckersley in Fall Classic? ln 1992, the Wichita V/ranglers enjoyed a series of similar maglc moments that reflected the character and personality of this very special organization. Here is a brief look at just a few of the hlghlights both on and off the playing field which made this past championship season a memorable experi-

t

THe Srnear On June 4, the Wichita Wranglers dropped the first game of a doubleheader to the El Paso Drablos at Lawrence Dumont Stadium. At that moment, Wichita, with a record oI 25-21 , found themselves five games behind the Western Division leading Diablos with just 15 games to play in the season's first half . The winner would be assured of a playoff berth and a chance at the Texas League Championship. Promising, yet inconsistent, throughout the f irst half, the Wranglers had given no indication that they were about to begin, according to manager Bruce Bochy, "as impressive a run as anything l've ever seen or been associated with " The Wranglers salvaged the second game that day, promptly took the next two games from the Diablos, then suffered a tough '1 1-5 loss on the last game of the series. The Wranglers were three games out with only twelve to play The Wranglers shook off the loss, welcomed San Antonio to Lawrence Dumont, and preceded to win all six games against the N,4issions. Four of the victories were come-from-behind, whlle two were won in Wichlta's final at-bat. The Wranglers were now one game back of El Paso, which had taken four of six contests f rom lVidland. So the confident Wranglers departed for El Paso for a six'game showdown series to decide the first-half title. "When you start to play for a championship, there's a fine line between aggressiveness and nervousness," observed catcher Brlan Johnson just before leavrng for Texas. "Right now, I think we're aggressive." The flight to El Paso was de ayed three hours because of bad

weather, and the team missed its connection in Dallas. They then flew to lt/lidland (dropping off the Vlissions, who were pLaying the Angels that same day), and finally arrived at Cohen Stadium in El Pasoiust one hour before the game The Wranglers pounded 1 6 hits in route to a convincing 10 6 win to tie up the division. They then won the next night, 7'6, taking a one game lead. In Game 3, Wichita hammered out 19 hrts and 14 runs - an incredible '1 2 scoring with two outs. A two-game lead with three to play, the Wranglers magic number was 1. Needing lust one of the next three games to clinch the title, the Wranglers swept the next two and convincingly captured the first half Western Division title that seemed so improbable lust

over two weeks earlier. "We just went down there and steamrolled through that series," Bochy said after the season. "That was amazing. Even that club (El Paso) would tell you they got blitzkrieged." In just l6 days, the Wranglers had gone from five games back to three games ahead. Displaying an uncommon blend of emotion and poise, the young Wranglers showed an ability to play their best when it counted the most Wichita had posted 1 1 wins in a row,14 of l5 and five straight at El Paso to clinch the title. A remarkable run at a remarkable time.

Tur Cuarur "Ladies & gentlemen, it's time for the most exciting two minutes tn

sportsl"

With those words, Wranglers PA announcer and local sports authority Dave Phillips had unknowingly opened a new chapter in Wichita Baseball history, one that will be forever woven into the rich tapestry that is America's Pastime. "Let's give a hand to the Wranglers crack groundscrew as they get the infield back into tip, top shape tn less than two minutes!- it's the . .

What began as a sim ple mid-game exercise to spruce up the infield had exploded into a fully choreographed crowd-pleasing production For two min utes (actually 90 seconds, but who's counting) every evening at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium, the Wranglers six man groundscrew shed their everyman persona and assumed an aura a mystique usually reserved for royalty and rock stars.

He would soon learn that "the look" was a tribute to new Wranglers player Billy Hall, who would be joinlng the team in Wichita for their upcom ng playoff series against El Paso. After tt was discovered that at east half a dozen of the p ayers had shaved their heads, word quickly made its way back to Lawrence Dumont Stadium. And when the team arrived back at the stadi um that afternoon, they learned that Genera lvlanager Steve Shaad, as a sign of front off ce support for the team, wou d consent to have hls head shaved as we I an unprecedented symbol of Wranglers unity. DREAM TEAM out Reuschel, a crafty veteran and a master of keeping batters off balance. Reuschel helped the '72 Aeros to an American Association Western Division crown and the best team ERA in Wichita baseball history - 3.34, "Big Daddy" went 9-2, with a stunning ERA of '1 .32 before joining the Chicago Cubs en route to a career record of 214-191 and 3.37 ERA. Reuschel was a two-time All-Star and Gold Glove winner during his 19-year career.

t'

992 will forever be remembered as the Year of the Dream Team. Everyone caught the fever - the NBA sent iordan, Barkley & Co. to Barcelona to bring home the gold, Davis Cup dispatched N,4cEnroe, Courier and Agassi to kick Switzerland around, and both the NHL and lVlajor League Baseball entertained the notion of sending representatives to battle foreign lands in future Olympic contests. Determined never to be caught on the wrong end of a fashionable trend, Wichita Baseball has decided to look back through the annals of former and current lVajor League greats who have passed through our community on their way to "The Show" in order to nominate our choices for Wichita's alltime best and bri ghtest. To be eligible for our prestigious ball club, a player must have played all or part of a minor league season representing the city of Wichita, and then subsequently have moved on to a major league career. Our objective was simple: to select the best players during the modern era ( 1 950 to present) - by position - to ever don a local uniform - based exclusively on their minor league career here in Wichita. A difficult job? Sure! Time consuming? You betl 5o we decided to go about our new task the Andy right way - we picked up the phone and called local baseBenes ball historian lVike Kiser for his selections. So here it is, Wichita - your Dream Team! Let the arguments begin...

LHP Lnnnv Guna/'1 972-73 Aeros We needed a left-hander in the rotation, so we settled on Gura, who went 12-6 in 31 starts for the Aeros, and posted the best winning percentage of any pitcher in the American Association (.733) in 1972.We also like Gura because he has a black belt in karate - just ask Brian Downing - and had a real cool mustache. Gura went on to pitch

for the Cubs, Yankees and Royals, winning 126 games with a career ERA of 3.76. (Barely nudged out of this no. 4 slot was former Yankee great Don Larson, who of course Andre Thorn ton - Our pitched the only perfect game in DH World Series history. Despite some serious lobbying from the marketing department, who argued that the addition of a marquee name like Larson would boost season ticket and mini-pak sales, we stood our ground for the integrity of the game and went with Gura.)

RHP Fnarux SEMINARA'/1 991 Wranglers This Brooklyn native was the ace of the Western Division winning Wranglers team from'91, and a popular player in the clubhouse. Big Frank led the Texas League in victories (15), innings pitched (176), complete games (6), and tied for starts (27). He cracked the San Diego rotation in 1992, going 9-4 with a 3.68, and is projected as a key contributor for'93.

Willey proved to be a work horse on the mound, pitching 247 trames during the season. He was awarded the league tr4VP for his accomplishments. From 1958 to 65, Willey played for the lr/ilwaukee Braves (winning The Sporting News Rookie Pitcher of the Year honors in '58), and the New York l\,4ets.

Of all the great players in Wichita history, Phelps undeniably boasts the greatest season of any slugger in Wichita history. Just consider these numbers he put on the board during his memorable '82 season: 46 home runs, 141 runs batted in, 320 total bases, .706 slugging percentage and .471 on-base percentage - all of which led the Triple-A American Association. Pheips also produced 15 game-winning RBI's. The Aeros had a winning percentage of .652 in games which Phelps had at least one RBl. Phelps was justifiably voted the American Association Most Valuable Player that season, and went on to a productive ma.jor league career with the Kansas City Royals, Montreal Expos, Seattle I\zlariners, New York Yankees, Oakland Athletics, and Cleveland lndians.

Brlq/'1971 Aeros

Bell was the second consecutive member of the Aeros to be named the American Association Rookie of the Year. The stocky third baseman, son of big leaguer Gus Bell,

swung a .289 stick in Wichita and played solid defense at the hot corner. Bell went on to win six gold gloves while playing for the lndians, Rangers, Reds and Astros. Up the middle:

SS Cnnlos Beence,/1988 Pilots Baerga batted .273 with '1 2 homers and 65 RBls during the '88 season in Wichita. Traded to Cleveland in 1990 as part of the much-ballyhooed Joe Carter deal, Baerga enjoyed a breakthrough season in '92, becoming the first AL second sacker to bat .300 ( 312) with at least 20 HR, 100 RBI and 200 hits. After Alomar, Baerga is acknowledged to be the best 2B in the American League.

RH Cxnts CHAMBLTSS/1970-71 Aeros Chambliss earned his place on our Dream Team for both his ability on the field and his positive influence in the clubhouse. Chambliss is one of only three players in Wichita Triple-A history to be recognized as American Association Rookie of the Year. ln 1970, Chambliss won the batting crown with a BA of .342, probably the first rookie pro to win a Triple-A title. Chambliss went on to a distinguished career in the majors, and is best remembered by locals for hitting the homer against the Royals in the '76 ALCS that sent the Yankees into the World Series for the first time in I2 seasons. A successful minor league manager in the Tigers and Braves organizations, Chambliss begins '93 as the hitting instructor for the St. Louis Cardinals,

CF Jenalo Cunx/1987 Pilots Though the Alomar brothers were garnering most of the headlines in 1987, Clark was quietly putting together a thoroughly impressive season. He finished in the top ten in seven league offensive categories, including BA (.31 1), RBI (95), total bases (271), doubles (36), triples (8), hits (165) and game winning RBls (13). Clark was selected by Colorado Rockies in the expansion draft.

LF Boe "HuRRrcerur" HazlE 956-57 Braves Hazle was a .282 hitter with 25 HRs, 104 RBI's and a .459 slugger for Wichita of the American Association. After getting called up to Nzlilwaukee, Hazle blossomed into the most exciting big league newcomer in years. For over two months, Hazle hit .403 with seven home runs,2J ribbies, and a .649 slugging percentage, pacing the Braves to the American League flag. ln the World Series, Hazle's Game 7 single started a 1

Wichita - a .319 batting average, 12 homers, 68 RBI's and 43 SBs. A shortstop and second sacker with the Wranglers, Roberto and brother Sandy Jr. helped Wichita to the '89 Texas League first-half crown. ln fact, until he led the Blue Jays to the '92 World Series championship, Alomar considered the

four-run rally and Milwaukee became the World Champs for the only time in their history. He went on to play for the Reds and Tigers.

DH Aruone THoRNToN/1973 Aeros We adopted th DH rule (sorry, purists!)just to get Andre Thornton on this team. After being acquired from the Braves system rn mid-lVay, Thornton went on to hit a home run every eight at-bats (17 in all), knock in 45 runs, and hit 289 in lust 40 games. He was nicknamed "Thunder" after hitting three dingers in one game against Denver. Sherman earned a mid-season promotion to Las Vegas in '92 after hitting .332 (a .451 on base percentage!), 1 '1 triples, six homers and 24 stolen bases, along with seamless defensive play. A solid bet to make the Padres roster, Darrell should be a key contributor for San Diego in '93.

MGR Bnucr BocHYl1992 Wranglers winning the Wranglers' first Texas League Championship during his only season in Wichita, Bochy earns the nod. Success seems to follow Bochy around - last year's f lag was Bruce's third consecutive championship (Spokane in'90 and High Desert in'91). After leading the Wranglers to a dramatic, comef rom-behind Western Division f irsthalf title, Bochy helped the team overcome the mid-season departure of such key players as Darrell Sherman, Tim Worrell and Scott By

Local fans wanting to catch a sneak preview of these future stars need to travel no further than Lawrence-Dumont Stadium this summer. Though the San Diego Padres may not be boasting its strongest major league player roster in recent years, there is no question to the wealth of talent to be found on the Padres' Double'A farm club According Io Baseball America, no less than five of the Padres top ten prospects will be in Wichita during the '93 campaign. Representing all aspects of the game, these stand outs include a power hittinq outfielder, a hard throwing right-hander, two slick fielding infielders, and a speedster with a great stick. Here's a closer look at these five talents, in order of their organizational ranking by Baseball America .

initial promise Today, its widely considered that the truest test of a young player comes when he makes the jump from Class A to Double-A. Prospects from B1 A clubs are f unnelled into just 26 Double-A teams, creating the biggest challenge of a player's career. With many major league organizations stocking their Triple A rosters with veterans to be used as handy insurance policies for injuries for the big club, there can be no denying the fact that the best young talent in the game today can be found at the Double-A level. This coming season, fans will have a chance to enjoy watching an entire crop of future major

ScoRE

Wranglers fans can enjoy baseball more this summer by keeping score of the game. The best part about keeping score is that it's easy. All you need is a basic knowledge of baseball's rules. Experts use a simple code, which is based on numbering players by their positions.

Number Players As Follows 1-Pitcher; 2-Catcher; 3-First Baseman; 4-Second Baseman; S-Third Baseman;

6-Shortstop; 7-Left Fielder; 8-Center Fielder; 9-Right Fielder; DH-Designated

(NBC) The growing popularity and success of both the Wranglers and the NBC World Series can be directly contributed to the steady yet spirited leadership of Shaad This past season, the Wranglers set a Double-A attendance record for the city of Wichita -220,503 - whiie the 58th Annua NBC Tournament drew 77,460 fans. All told, baseball events at LawrenceDumont Stadium attracted more than 300,000 fans during the 'l

Wranglers fans are quite familiar with the greatest entertainer in baseball, Wi bur T. A, Wrangler. But few are aware that Wilbur's considerable per forming skills were honed during a ong and colorful career rn Hollywood His f ilm debut, Ihe Sons Of Katie Elder, ignored the traditional themes of western films and exp ored the darker side of Chuckwagons and the men who eat off of them. Wilbur's performance as the Deputy Sheriff who captures the cook (Dabney Co eman) sneaking beans into the no-bean chili was hailed as a "triumphant debut." Rather than became typecast as a "Western" actor, Wilbur took a series of bit parts in other film genres, including his criti cally acclaimed performance as Ngyun Kow, the Vietnamese officer charged with interrogating John Rambo (Sly Stallone). After a brief yet successful musical career (his "l\z1C Wilbur Tl" album spawned two rap hits, "Chompin' (At The Bit!)" and "Homeboy Stampede"), Wilbur decided to return to the big screen for his f inal film role in City Slickers As the film's choreo grapher, Wilbur was the brains behind the hilarious coffee grinder induced stampede, which Gene Shalit called "the funniest three minutes in American Cinema." Wilbur continues to turn down offers to return to Hollywood, most recently declining the role of loey Buttafuoco in the U5A Network's musical version of The Amy Fisher Story. He remains active, however, in the local theater scene Wilbur will soon be directing and starring rn a new production of Neil Simon's Ihe Odd Couple at the Crown Uptown Dinner, where he will portray neatnik Felix Unger. 5urprisingly, Wilbur was able to induce fe low team mascot Cookie (who has assumed a Brando-esque profile in recent days) to play the slovenly Oscar ltzladison. The cast also includes the local stage debut of Wrangiers broadcaster Scott Nzlasteller in the role of lr,4urray the Cop. Yet whatever he achieves elsewhere, Wilbur maintains that there is no theater as beautiful as Lawrence-Dumont Stadium, and no part more satis fying than that of the Wichita Wranglers mascot, a part which Wilbur lovingiy calls "the role of a lifetime "

\

992 season.

"l'm thriled to have what I considered to be the best job in Wichita," says Shaad. "The City has given us a great facility, the Riches have given us the resources to hire a fantastic staff and the fans have responded in record numbers lt's been a real team effort making pro baseball successful in Wichita. lVy phrlosophy, for the front office and the fans, is to make it fun to work here and fun to go to a game." Having distinguished himself during his seven year tenure with the Wichita Wings of the N,4ajor Soccer League, Shaad, 38, was chosen by Rich Products Corporation to manage the 1987 National Baseball Congress World Series. With the success of that tournament, Shaad was asked by the Riches to stay on to run the National Baseball Congress year-around, and later, to serve as general manager of their new professional franchise, the Wichita Wranglers. Shaad was a track and cross country star at Wichita State University, where he earned degrees in Journalism and French, minoring in Spanish. After graduation, he worked as the sports edltor for the Ark City Traveler, and then as sports information director for womens sports at WSU. He joined the Wings in 1980, serving five years as their Director of l\zledia Relations, before his promotion to Assistant Generai lVanager in '85, and then to General [Vanager the following year. Steve and his wife Becky have five sons -.Jordan, l0; Jason, 9, Jonathan, 6; .Jackson, 2-1 12, and lonson, just over a year old
