Ecl( Stadium-Tyler Field When baseball was revived at Wichita State University 17 years ago, Shocker Field was constructed in an empty grass lot along2lstStreeton the east edge of campus. The Shockers'horne

Today, with the completion of the $1.5 million '?hase Itr" expansion prciect in the fall of 192and the addition of the largest on-campus scoreboand in the country in thespring of 192, EckStadium-TylerField stands among the finest collep baseball hcilities in the country. The Phase Itr expansion included the constmction of of the tri-level C+ra ld Michaud pavilion behind the first-base dugout. The lower level houses the Joe Carter players' locker roorn, a "team roorry" and traininghcilities ficrtheWichita State athletics training departrnent. Head Coadr Gene Stephenson was Wichita State's first and only NCAA team title. Since winning the national title, Wichita State has returned to Omaha three more times, twice advancing to the national championship game be. fore suffering a loss to Louisiana State each time. Gene Stephenson, named national Coach of the Year by Baseball America in 1993 for the third time in his career
also earned the honor tn 1982 -andhe1989 and nine times the Mis- Conference souri Valley Coach of the
Year, is in his 17th season as head coach at Wichita State University. Since Stephenson's arrival in 1978, the Shockers are the winningest program in NCAA Division I college baseball with a %J6-276-3 mark in 16 seasons. That record puts Stepherson second only.to Texas' Cliff Custafson in career winning percentage (.766) among active NCAA Division I head coaches and fifth on the all-time list. Stephenson reached the pinnacle of his career in 1989, when he guided the Shockers to the College World Series title with a F3 win over the Texas Longhorns. The championship

opening-round win over Ohio State in the Atlantic Regional last May, continuing the pattern in which he has captured his 500th, 600th, 700th, 800th and 900th career win more quickly than any head coach in NCAA Dvision I history. Stephenson left the University of Oklahoma in March 1 97 for Wichita State, where heundertookthe task of reviving a program which had no history of success and had been dormant since 1970. Since his arrival, Stephenson has directed the Shockers to 12 NCAA tournament appearances, includinga rhool-record seven consecutivedating to 1 982 eight MVC regr.rlar-season titles and eight NII\/C 900 in a 14-5
tournament championships. Wichita State instantly became a winning prograrn upon Stephenson's arrival in 1978, when it compiled a 4330-1 record. Sixteen years later, the Shockers have won 45 or more games 14 times, five times topping 60-win 1982,1985, mark, and six times 7989,1991.,1992 and-1993 - I have been the winningest Division program in the country. Stephenson, a1968 graduate of the University of Missouri, was anassistant to Enos Semore at Oklahoma for six years, helping the Sooners to four Big Eight Conference championships and fi ve CWS appearanc e from197277.
Stephenson may have done his finest job last spring, as he, and assistants Brent Kemnitz, Jim Thomas and Tom Buchanan, guided theShockers back to Omaha after losing six allAmerica players from the 1992 team. With a 3-1 mark last year, Stephenson has put his name in the CWS record book. He ranks fifth in all-time CWS winning percentagewitha 1 G9 record (.640) and is tied for 10th on the alltime CWS win list. Among active coaches,Stephenson has thebest winning percentage in CWS play and is tied for fourth in wins. The 48-year old Stepherson and his of 28 years, Paula, have a son, Jay, ?3, and a daughter, Ginny, 21 .

BRITISH AIRWAYS, AIR F'RNCE , ETC: Most airlines invite you to make yourself
comfortable.
But at TWA, the employees would rather do that job for you. We're grving you more space-by taking out seats. In fact, there's up to 507o more room for your knees. And we've addcd footrests on all our wide body planes, so you can put your feet up after you stretch out. Of course, there are some things we're not about to change-like our policy on free upgradcs for frequent flyers. And now Comfort Class'* passenger service. It replaces coach, but the price remains the same.
For reservations or rnore inforrnation, call your travel agent, or TWA at

Shocker Athletic Sdrolarship Oryanization HISTORY OF SASO
AS
The Shocker Athletic Scholarship Organization was founded in to stimulate and promote civic interest and support for the continued growth of the Wichita State University-Intercollegiate Athletic Association (ICAA). SASO has a wide range of contributors, both individual and corporate. Through its social, recreational and educational activities, SASO is able to build a volunteer membership to provide private financial support to lend scholarship assistance to WSU student-athletes. 1,977

SASO each year. Support of scholarships has provided an avenue to
higher eduiation for many young men and women who may not have otherwise been able to afford college. SASO members benefit from participation, by receiving the satisfaction of supporting college athletes in their quest to better themselves througlihigher education and athletic competition. Additional SASO membership benefits are outlined on the following page.
SASO IS IMPORTANT
SASO members provide approximately one-third of the more than $4 million annual ICAA budget through contributions and ticket purchases. The ICAA's annual scholarship bill has reached $925,000 for tuition, books, fees, and room and board. Currently, full athletic scholarships for in-state students cost approximately $5,500 a year, and more than $10,000 for out-of-state students. The Shockers are most appreciative of the generous support from the Shocker Athletic Scholarship Organization! (Please note: This year, in order to more accurately recognize the generous support of SASO contributors with multiple memberships, all donations have been combined. Each contributor/s name is placed in the club level of the total amount of the donation. The list includes all conkibutors through Feb. 15.)
