On December 12, President Joe Biden mourned the death of Mexican singer Vicente Fernández on Twitter. “The music world has lost an icon. The music of Vicente Fernández created memories for millions.”

The tweet did not go unnoticed by the singer’s fans or by the Latino community in the country, and it has a deep meaning, as it is a way to recognize the importance of Hispanic culture in the United States.

This act, conceived by the presidential communications office, is one of many that have put the spotlight on the Hispanic community and culture in the country in the last year. The most important, perhaps, is the census data that revealed something that was already intuited: Latinos are no longer a minority in the country.

Some 62 million people consider themselves Hispanic, that is 19% of the U.S. population, a not insignificant figure that has served to generate an uncomfortable conversation that the nation owes to one out of every five Americans.

There are many Latinos, first, second and even third generation immigrants, Afro-Latinos, white Latinos, indigenous Latinos, Latinos plain and simple. Latinos who are professionals, businessmen and entrepreneurs, students and workers, newcomers who only get piecework, farmers who are only in the country during the planting and harvest season.

But they are all part of perhaps the largest productive force in the country in the 21st century. In fact, they have the highest labor participation rate, at 65.6%, and contribute $2.7 trillion to GDP.

But beyond the numbers, the influence and reach of Latinos is growing.

One of Biden’s goals has been to achieve greater diversity in government, and this year the President has appointed Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, Health Secretary Xavier Becerra, Education Secretary Miguel Cardona, and Small Business Administration (SBA) Administrator Isabel Guzman.

Aside from politics, as always, culture has been the highlight. Encanto, the Disney movie inspired in Colombia, has set a record at the box office. The new version of West Side Story, directed by Steven Spielberg and featuring a Latino cast, has also been the talk of the post-pandemic return of cinema to theaters.

For the second consecutive year, Puerto Rican singer Bad Bunny was the most listened to singer on Spotify, with more than 9 million plays, competing with American icons such as Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber.

All these ‘hits’ are proof that multiculturalism is already a reality. The generational change will also continue to modify the criteria of Hispanicity. The ten million Hispanic babies born in the last decade in the country will be the generation that completes the American dream.z

El pasado 12 de diciembre, tras la muerte del cantante mexicano Vicente Fernández, el presidente Joe Biden lamentó el hecho a través de Twitter. “La música mundial ha perdido un ícono. Vicente Fernández creó recuerdos para millones de personas”. El trino no pasó desapercibido por los fans del cantante, ni por la comunidad latina en el país y tiene un significado profundo, pues es un modo de reconocer la importancia de la cultura hispana en Estados Unidos. Este acto, pensado desde la oficina de comunicaciones de la presidencia, es uno de muchos que hicieron que se pusiera el foco sobre la comunidad y la cultura hispana en el país en el último año. El más importante, tal vez, es la información que arrojó el censo que reveló algo que ya se intuía: los latinos dejaron de ser minoría en el país. Unos 62 millones de personas se consideran hispanas, esto es el 19% de la población estadounidense, cifra nada despreciable que ha servido para generar una conversación incómoda que le está debiendo el país a uno de cada cinco estadounidenses.

Latinos hay muchos, inmigrantes de primera, segunda y hasta tercera generación, afrolatinos, latinos blancos, latinos indígenas, latinos a secas. Latinos profesionales, empresarios y emprendedores, estudiantes y trabajadores, recién llegados que solo consiguen trabajo a destajo, agricultores que solo están en el país durante la temporada de siembra y cosecha.

Pero todos hacen parte tal vez de la fuerza productiva más grande del país en el siglo XXI. De hecho, tienen la tasa de participación laboral más alta, 65,6%, y contribuyen con 2.7 billones de dólares del PIB.

Pero más allá de los números, la influencia y alcance de los latinos es cada vez mayor.

Uno de los objetivos de Biden ha sido lograr mayor diversidad en el gobierno. En el 2021 nombró a los secretarios de seguridad nacional, Alejandro Mayorkas; de Salud, Xavier Becerra; de Educación, Miguel Cardona, y a la administradora de la Agencia Federal de Pequeños Negocios (SBA, en inglés), Isabel Guzmán.

Aparte de la política, como siempre, la cultura ha sido el ámbito destacado. ‘Encanto’, la película de Disney inspirada en Colombia, ha marcado récord en taquilla. La nueva versión de ‘West Side Story’, dirigida por Steven Spielberg y con elenco latino, también ha dado de qué hablar en el regreso del cine a los teatros después de la pandemia.

Por segundo año consecutivo, el puertorriqueño Bad Bunny fue el cantante más escuchado en Spotify, con más de 9 millones de reproducciones, y compitió con iconos americanos como Taylor Swift y Justin Bieber.

Todos estos éxitos son muestra de que la multiculturalidad es una realidad. El cambio generacional también seguirá modificando los criterios que se tienen de la hispanidad. Los diez millones de bebés hispanos que nacieron en la última década en el país serán la generación que termine de cumplir el sueño americano.z
