LEADERSHIP THE HEROICS OF RICHARD FIERRO

Last month, five people were killed and dozens more were injured when a gunman entered Club Q, an LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
If not for the heroics of Richard M. Fierro, it is likely that far many more lives would have been lost.
It was he who helped bring the gunman to the ground, grabbed his gun, beat and subdued him until the police arrived.
“I just went into combat mode,” Fierro said when recalling the events, to the New York Times.
He was with his wife, daughter, his daughter’s boyfriend and some friends, when the mass shooter began firing.
“I needed to save my family — and my family was at that time everybody in that room… that’s what I was trained to do. I saw him [the shooter] and I went and got him… I tried to save people and it didn’t work out for five.”
His daughter’s boyfriend, 22-year-old Raymond Green Vance, was one of the five victims of the mass shooting.
It was an emotional situation for Fierro.
“This whole thing was a lot. My daughter and wife should’ve never experienced combat in Colorado Springs, and everybody in that building experienced combat that night — not to their own accord, but because they were forced to,” he said in an interview with CNN.
Fierro made headlines thanks to his actions on that night, but acts of heroism have been a part of his life for the better part of two decades.
AN ARMY VETERAN
Fierro’s actions in the face of such a scary situation was part of what he was trained to do, which is why he has denounced the description.
“I am not a hero,” he told CNN. “I’m just a guy that wanted to protect his kids and his wife.”
Fierro is a 15-year U.S. Army Veteran, serving three tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. A Bronze Star Medal recipient, Fierro served as a field artillery officer in the Army. He retired from service in 2013, holding the rank of Major at the time.
While known for his dedicated service, Fierro’s actions have gotten him quite the recognition since.
A few weeks later, the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) awarded Fierro with a $5,000 reward and the Presidential Medal, the organization’s highest honor.

El mes pasado, cinco personas murieron y docenas más resultaron heridas cuando un hombre armado entró en el Club Q, un club nocturno LGBTQ de Colorado Springs, Colorado.
De no ser por la heroicidad de Richard M. Fierro, es probable que se hubieran perdido muchas más vidas. Fue él quien ayudó a derribar al pistolero, le arrebató el arma, lo golpeó y lo sometió hasta que llegó la Policía. “Me puse en modo de combate”, dijo Fierro al recordar los hechos al New York Times.
Estaba con su esposa, su hija, el novio de su hija y algunos amigos, cuando el tirador empezó a disparar. “Necesitaba salvar a mi familia, y mi familia eran en ese momento todos los que estaban en esa habitación... para eso me entrenaron. Le vi y fui por él... Intenté salvar a todas las personas, pero cinco se me salieron de las manos”.
El novio de su hija, Raymond Green Vance, de 22 años, fue una de las cinco víctimas del tiroteo. Fue una situación emotiva para Fierro. “Todo esto fue mucho. Mi hija y mi esposa nunca deberían haber vivido un combate en Colorado Springs, y todo el mundo en ese edificio vivió un combate esa noche, no por voluntad propia, sino porque se vieron obligados a ello”, dijo en una entrevista con la CNN.
Fierro saltó a los titulares gracias a sus acciones de aquella noche, pero los actos de heroísmo han formado parte de su vida durante casi dos décadas.
UN VETERANO DEL EJÉRCITO
La actuación de Fierro ante una situación tan aterradora formaba parte de aquello para lo que fue entrenado, por lo que no está de acuerdo con el calificativo de “héroe”: “No soy un héroe”, declaró a la CNN, “solo soy un tipo que quería proteger a sus hijos y a su esposa”.
Fierro es veterano del Ejército estadounidense desde hace 15 años, con tres misiones en Irak y una en Afganistán. Galardonado con la Medalla Estrella de Bronce, sirvió como oficial de artillería de campaña en el Ejército. Se retiró del servicio en el 2013, ostentando entonces el rango de comandante.
Aunque conocido por su dedicación al servicio, sus acciones le ha valido el reconocimiento. Unas semanas después, la Liga de Ciudadanos Latinoamericanos Unidos (LULAC) le concedió una recompensa de 5.000 dólares y la Medalla Presidencial al máximo honor de la organización.
