Ocasio-Cortez took a major step up in the ranks of Congress, as she was elected by her colleagues as the new Democratic Vice Ranking Member of the House Oversight Committee.

It makes Ocasio-Cortez the second-highest ranking Democrat on the entire 47-member committee.

With the elevation, AOC will now work closer alongside former Committee Chairman, now Ranking Member, Rep. Jamie Raskin to develop the party’s approach in the powerful House subcommittee tasked with playing the government watchdog role in Congress. It also means new heights for a progressive member of the Democratic Party, which has made inroads ever since Ocasio-Cortez’s introduction to Congress in 2019.

“Thank you to my colleagues on [House Oversight Committee] for entrusting me with this responsibility. I’m thrilled to get to work with our incredible Oversight team!” Ocasio-Cortez wrote on Twitter.

WHAT IS A VICE RANKING MEMBER?

The vice chair, or vice ranking member role on the committee was first created by Democrats in 2017 — the last time they were the minority party in the House — and it was envisioned as a way to elevate junior members of Congress to their first leadership position.

Prior to AOC in the 118th Congress, the former vice chairs or vice ranking members were Rep. Gerry Connolly in the 115th Congress and Rep. Katie Hill in the 116th Congress. There was no vice chair under Raskin in the 117th Congress.

WHAT’S ON THE DOCKET?

Some things proposed for the committee to look into are the coronavirus pandemic and its origins, federal direc- tives, and the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan in 2021.

Republican leaders are also taking direct aim at President Biden by looking into his family, particularly Hunter Biden and his business endeavors, which have long been sore points for far-right Republicans.

It means leadership like Raskin and Ocasio-Cortez will have to be on the defense for a majority of this Congress in regards to investigations.
