Sofi is a Mexican teenager who joins a march where she will meet historical insurrectionists and other unknown women protesting against the patriarchal order responsible for a planetary crisis.

This is the synopsis of a new book that addresses the problem of gender violence in Mexico.

Recounting history, from Mesoamerica, the colony, independence, revolution and up to the present day, La marcha del #TerremotoFeminista tells the patriarchal history of Mexico through the teenager. It’s a country where every day, more than 10 women are murdered with a backdrop of 88,000 total missing persons.

SOFI, THE INSPIRATION

The book was written by journalist Laura Castellanos and illustrated by artist Brenda Castro. Its audience is especially young women, but the creators also hope it will be read by people of all ages and backgrounds to educate them on an issue that ultimately affects all of society.

“Sofi exists and is a girl who, despite being born in a conservative place, was already a feminist at the age of 13,” said Castellanos.

She recounted her astonishment at teenagers waking up to confront and protest gender violence increases in society. At the same time there was a spiral of more violence against women, resistance started to emerge in both urban and rural areas.

With a mixture of journalism and fiction alongside clear and direct illustrations, Castro and Castellanos share the goal of helping women understand “where this historical oppression comes from.”

“That it is not something natural, but something cultural that can be transformed,” said the journalist.

BORN FROM A FEMINIST WAVE

In February 2019, as Castellanos witnessed the fourth feminist wave in the country, she proposed the idea of S ofi es una adolescente mexicana que se suma a una marcha en la que conocerá a insurrectas históricas y otras desconocidas que protestan contra el orden patriarcal responsable de la crisis civilizatoria y planetaria. Esa es la sinopsis del libro que aborda el problema de la violencia de género en México.

Haciendo un recuento histórico desde la prehistoria, pasando por Mesoamérica, la colonia, la independencia, la revolución y hasta la actualidad, La marcha del #TerremotoFeminista relata a través de esta adolescente la historia patriarcal de México, un país donde cada día son asesinadas más de diez mujeres y donde hay más de 88.000 personas desaparecidas.

SOFI, LA INSPIRACIÓN

El libro ha sido escrito por la periodista feminista Laura Castellanos e ilustrado por la artista feminista y vegana Brenda Castro. Va dirigido especialmente a mujeres jóvenes pero también espera que sea leído por personas de todas las edades y orígenes, para educarse en este tema que, al final, nos afecta a todos como sociedad.

“Sofi existe y es una niña que, a pesar de haber nacido en un lugar conservador, ya se asumía feminista a los trece años”, explica la autora.

Castellanos cuenta su asombro al notar que conforme aumenta la violencia de género en la sociedad, las adolescentes despiertan más temprano para confrontarlo y protestar contra él. Y señala como a la par de que hubo una espiral de violencia de género más cruel hacia las mujeres, empezaron a perfilarse resistencias, expresiones subversivas dónde iban asomándose las mujeres tanto en espacios urbanos como rurales.

Mezcla de periodismo y ficción con ilustraciones claras y directas, Castro y Castellanos comparten el objetivo de que las mujeres comprendan “de dónde viene esta opresión histórica, que no es algo natural, sino que es algo cultural que puede transformarse”, relató la periodista.

NACIDA DE UNA OLA FEMINISTA

The narrative of the story was created through the lens of intersectional feminism, as the author brings to light class differences, racism and gender violence, even from the perspective of economic violence.

Writer Rita Segato affirmed that “feminism does not see men as the enemy, but the patriarchal order.” In this sense, Castellanos understands the patriarchal system’s dependence on social class, skin color, urban, rural or indigenous origin, and other struggles that confront individuals.

One of the challenges for the illustrator, Castro, was to get historical characters to interact with Sofi. In the end, the march itself would be the stage where she would meet and get to know them.

“It was a loving way of reuniting the ‘ancestras’ with the morritas [girls] of the 21st century. It is the story of gender violence, of how the patriarchal system has been built in Mexico,” said Castellanos. “The most contemporary books come from Spain, Germany, the United States, but our perspective was missing, which has to do with a country that was conquered, with a humanitarian crisis due to femicides and disappearances.”

The author insisted that the main message they seek to convey with La marcha del #TerremotoFeminista is sorority and hope — the foundations of feminism — in addition to raising awareness among as many people as possible.

“What the book seeks is this awareness, but yes there is a change in the collective consciousness of women. Girls already carry this chip of warriors beyond the ideological,” said Castellanos. z le propuso la idea del libro a su editor. La narrativa de la historia se realizó a partir de la mirada del feminismo interseccional, ya que la autora también visibiliza las diferencias de clase, el racismo y la violencia de género, también a partir de la construcción de la violencia económica. La escritora Rita Segato afirma que “el feminismo no tiene al hombre como enemigo, sino al orden patriarcal”. En este sentido, Castellanos entiende que el sistema patriarcal también depende de la clase social a la que perteneces, de tu color de piel, de tu origen urbano, rural o indígena y las otras luchas que te atraviesan como sujeto. Uno de los retos para la ilustradora fue lograr que los personajes históricos interactuasen con Sofi, pero la marcha en sí misma sería el escenario donde se encontraría y las conocería. “Fue una manera amorosa de reencontrar a las ‘ancestras’ con las morritas (chicas) del siglo XXI. Es la historia de la violencia de género, de cómo se ha construido el sistema patriarcal en México. Los libros más contemporáneos vienen de España, Alemania, Estados Unidos, pero faltaba nuestra mirada, que tiene que ver con un país que fue conquistado, con una crisis humanitaria por feminicidios y desapariciones”, dijo la escritora Laura Castellanos. Castellanos insistió en que lo principal que buscan transmitir con La marcha del #TerremotoFeminista es sororidad y esperanza, las bases del feminismo, además de concienciar al mayor número posible de personas, hombres, mujeres, jóvenes y adultos. “Lo que el libro busca es esta concientización pero, sí, hay un cambio en la conciencia colectiva de las mujeres. Las niñas ya traen ese chip de guerreras más allá de lo ideológico”, constató la autora. z
