Kikis recently sat down with AL DÍA to discuss her comedy origins and how her approach has changed since entering the game. Jokes about small jars of good jam and short people have all been done by her before. Kikis’ routines are always relatable, but are also brave enough to include issues exclusive to LGBTQ+ audiences

She has also featured as an actress in comedy series such as Drunk History: El Lado Borroso de la Historia, Laugh Factory in Spanish, and the first Mexican season of LOL: Last One Laughing.

Her comedy origins are simple, starting with an open mic at a beer hall and repeating the following week. Since then, a lot has changed about her style, and can be seen in routines, which can’t be defined in one way.

“We are not what we do or our sexual preferences. We are a bunch of defects and virtues, that’s what I like to address in my comedy,” said Kikis. “That’s why people identify with me, because they don’t need to be gay to understand me, they just have to think and feel.”

She has also been one of the comedians to adapt well to the new virtual world brought by the COVID-19 pandemic.

En pandemia con la Kikis, is a series of interviews she conducted with comedians based on an experimental model that first appeared in Cosmopolitan magazine in the 1990s. Kikis also launched the emotional health podcast Blessed Discomfort with her therapist.

To break down more about her views on comedy and routine, she sat down with AL DÍA:

Los chistes sobre botes pequeños de buena confitura y personas bajitas ya los ha hecho antes ella. Las rutinas de Kikis son siempre cercanas, como quien se pone las gafas de la comedia durante un paseo como transeúnte, pero también son valientes al incluir temas exclusivos LGTB. No es fácil ser standupera en Ciudad de México pero mucho menos hacer una importante carrera y convertirse en icono. Kikis ha sido también actriz de series de comedia conocidas como Drunk History: El Lado Borroso de la Historia, Laugh Factory en Español o la primera temporada mexicana de LOL: Last One Laughing.

Sus inicios fueron sencillos: empezó en el open mic de comedia en Beer Hall y repitió a la semana siguiente. Desde entonces reconoce que mucho ha cambiado en ella y que pueden apreciarse las mutaciones en rutinas que buscan no encasillarse.

“No somos a lo que nos dedicamos ni nuestras preferencias sexuales. Somos un chingo de defectos y de virtudes, eso es lo que me gusta abordar en mi comedia. Por eso la gente se identifica, porque no necesitan ser gays para entenderme, sólo tienen que pensar y sentir. Hasta el momento, no ha habido un tema que no toque. En mi show hablo de todo: de cómo somos los seres humanos, cómo pensamos, actuamos, sentimos e interactuamos”, contaba sobre su método en una entrevista reciente.

Ha sido también una de las comediantes que, con la crisis de los escenarios que trajo la pandemia, se ha adaptado al contenido digital. En pandemia con la Kikis es una serie de entrevistas a comediantes a partir de un modelo experimental que apareció en la revista Cosmopolitan en los años 90. What is comedy for you?

For me comedy is not a literary genre or a temperamental flash. For me, it is rather one of the many reflections of our society, of our state of mind, of what we are able to see and what we don’t want to see.

Comedy is the way we tickle the brain to keep it flexible and the most honorable way to make money.

How do you manage current events during your tours and shows?

The jokes that are static are the ones that expire faster and those that are permeated with current events. When what is happening in our environment mutates, that makes them always feel like “new.” In my case I have both.

What patterns of identity are part of humor’s DNA?

It plays a fundamental role because humor changes not only from one country to another, but also from one state to another.

You have to have the ability to change and adapt your show, otherwise you are destined to be a one-place comedian.

Should humor have any ties to tolerance or political correctness?

I think humor has an obligation to change and evolve with the society we live in because it is a very true reflection of it.

Humor has the ability to enter people’s psyche without permission, as well as normalize or perpetuate narratives, so that’s why I think we have an obligation to at least try to stretch a little bit towards a much more inclusive and less violent society.

How has fame been good for you?

I don’t know how much fame I have, but I think it has been good for me to reach more people. For those people to identify themselves in some way, to be able to open some topics and maybe start having that uncomfortable conversation that sometimes is so necessary for something to change.

It has also helped me to be the representation that I would have liked to have had in another era and when there was not in any media. Having the possibility to connect through laughter is also a huge privilege. z tros quisimos indagar para comprender mejor su método.

¿Qué es para ti la comedia?

Para mi la comedia no es un género literario ni un destello temperamental, para mí es más bien uno de los muchos reflejos de nuestra sociedad, de nuestro estado mental, de lo que somos capaces de ver y de lo que no quisiéramos ver. La comedia son las cosquillas que le hacemos al cerebro para mantenerlo flexible y la manera más honorable de ganar dinero.

¿Cómo gestionas la actualidad durante tus giras o shows?

Los chistes que son estáticos son los que caducan más rápido y aquellos que se permean de actualidad, de lo que está pasando en nuestro entorno mutan y eso hace que siempre se sientan como “nuevos” en mi caso tengo de ambos, los chistes “mutables” los disfruto mucho ya que siempre implican un reto nuevo, la posibilidad de fracasar es lo que le pone la sal y pimienta a los shows.

¿Qué papel juega la raza en la comedia? ¿Y el idioma?

Juega un papel fundamental, ya que el humor cambia ya no digamos de un país a otro, de un estado a otro cambia y se tiene que tener la capacidad de cambiar y adaptar tu show porque si no estarás destinado a ser un comediante de un solo lugar.

¿Debe mantener alguna obligación el humor con la tolerancia? ¿Y con la corrección política?

Creo que el humor tiene la obligación de cambiar y de evolucionar con la sociedad que vivimos ya que es un reflejo muy fiel de ella y el humor tiene la capacidad de entrar sin permiso a la psique de la gente, así como de normalizar o perpetuar narrativas, así que por esto me parece que tenemos la obligación de intentar por lo menos estirar un poco la liga hacia una sociedad mucho más inclusiva y menos violenta.

¿Cómo te ha sentado la fama?

No sé que tanta fama representa la que tengo, pero creo que ella me ha servido para llegar a más gente, que esa gente se identifique de alguna manera, para poder abrir algunos temas y tal vez empezar a tener esa plática incómoda que a veces es tan necesaria para que algo cambie, también me ha servido para ser la representación que me hubiera gustado tener en otra época y que no la había en ningún medio y tener la posibilidad de conectar desde la risa es un privilegio enorme, también me ha servido para que me manden cosas gratis, ¡amo las cosas gratis! z
