Welcome...

to the Alabama Trucking Association’s 75th Annual Convention

Kevin Savoy 2013 ATA Convention Chairman Greenbush Logistics Abbeville, Ala.

Dear Conventioneer, Thank you for your support of your Alabama Trucking Association with your attendance of our Annual Convention and Membership Meeting. As I am sure you’re aware, this year marks the Association’s 75th year of protecting your interests as a stakeholder in Alabama’s vital trucking industry. Our program this week will look back at the Association’s many accomplishments through the years and honor those who have served to make our industry stronger, safer and better. To open our meeting, join us Thursday evening on the Sunset Deck as we kick things off at a welcome reception, which includes music, food and drinks, fellowship with your colleagues, family and friends, and fireworks over the beach. Music provided by Rum Runners Dueling Pianos. Friday mornings’ featured speaker is Capt. Gerald Coffee, U.S. Navy (Ret.), who was flying combat missions over North Vietnam in 1966 when his jet was downed by enemy fire. He parachuted safely from his plane, but was captured immediately and spent seven years as a Prisoner of War in Communist prisons of that country. His presentation will focus on his incredible experience from capture to ultimate release. His faith in himself, others, his country, and his spiritual tenets were crucial to turning an unbelievably difficult and potentially devastating experience into an opportunity for personal growth. Friday afternoon, join us pool side for refreshments and cocktails while you bask in the sun. Later that evening, starting at 5 p.m. in the Emerald Ballroom, please join the ATA Workers’ Comp Fund for heavy hors d’oeuvres and cocktails. This event is open to all convention attendees and is always a lot fun. Don’t miss it. Saturday morning, we get back to business with both the Association and the Workers’ Comp Fund annual membership meetings. General business and discussions for the benefit and health of our Association and Fund are on tap. These are important discussions and your input is welcome. Please make plans to attend these sessions. Also appearing on the dais will be Billy Canary, CEO and President of the Business Council of Alabama. Mr. Canary will provide a thumbnail sketch of the state’s political and business climate, outlining what lies ahead for Alabama businesses. Ladies in attendance are eligible for a special Door Prize Drawing (total of $2,000 in cash). That afternoon we hold our Convention golf tournament at Sandestin’s Baytowne Golf Club. This course is a premier choice among the extensive offerings of golf courses in the 2

area, and we are excited to once again hold our tournament at one the nation’s top courses. If you haven’t registered for the tournament, please be aware that space is very limited. Be sure to visit the ATA convention registration booth or ask an ATA staff member for more info. Nongolfers are invited to join us for drinks at pool side. Later that evening, we celebrate the leadership of current ATA Chairman of the Board Jack Brim of B.R. Williams Trucking. Jack completes his term as ATA’s top elected official at the end of this quarter. He has performed masterfully for the Association. He has an infectious passion for the industry, leading by example, donating time and money to ATA’s many events. During the program, we will honor this year’s Alabama Truck Driver of the Year Lawson Trucking’s Larry Thomas, and we will also announce this year’s winner of the H. Chester Webb Award, which is this Association’s highest honor for a member. Keynote speaker for the event is University of Notre Dame football legend Rudy Ruettiger, who is immortalized by the classic feature film, “Rudy”. Make sure to attend Saturday evening’s program to hear firsthand from Ruettiger himself about the details of his inspiring story and the obstacles and challenges he faced in achieving a goal. Capping the evening will be the Dirk Howell Band from Athens, Ga. These guys are pros and have consistently delivered great live shows across the Southeast for more than 35 years. It’s going to be a fun-filled evening. Also, I’d like to mention that there will be drawings at each of the aforementioned events for great prizes like an iPad Mini, iPod Touch, MacBook, high-definition television, gift certificates and cash prizes, but you must be present to win. Finally, I thank our many Convention sponsors. This has been one of the best years on record in terms of membership support and sponsorship. As you look through the pages of this publication, please make special note of the businesses that supported your Convention. Their generosity and commitment to trucking is strong, and they’re the reason this Association can produce such a worthwhile event. I look forward to seeing you this weekend. If you have suggestions on how we can improve our meeting, please let me know.

Business Meeting & Breakfast Friday

8:30-11:00 a.m.

Emerald Ballroom

Dress is business casual. TA’s Business Meeting & Breakfast is the official opening of the Alabama Trucking Association’s 2013 Annual Convention. Featured Adowned speaker for the event is Capt. Gerald Coffee, U.S. Navy (Ret.), who, while flying combat missions over North Vietnam in 1966, was by enemy fire. He parachuted safely from his plane, but was captured immediately and spent seven years as a Prisoner of War Capt. Gerald “Jerry” Coffee U.S. Navy (Ret.) Vietnam POW

in Communist prisons of that country. His presentation will focus on his incredible experience from capture to ultimate release. His faith in himself, others, his country, and his spiritual tenets were crucial to turning an unbelievably difficult and potentially devastating experience into an opportunity for personal growth. Born in Modesto, Calif., Gerald “Jerry” Coffee joined the Navy in 1957 after graduating from UCLA with a Bachelor of Arts degree. In 1962, during the Cuban Missile Crisis, as an F-8 Crusader pilot, Jerry was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for flying low level reconnaissance missions over Cuba, taking the photos ultimately used by the United States U.N. ambassador to prove the existence of Soviet missiles there. He was featured in the 2007 History Channel series, “Man, Moment, Machine,” which recounts his photo recon exploits during that dangerous time in U.S. history. His daring mission is also documented in Michael Dobb’s book, “One Minute to Midnight: Kennedy, Khrushchev, and Castro on the Brink of Nuclear War.” After his capture in Vietnam, he spent seven years in prison camps, and was released in 1973. He then returned to operational duties and retired from active duty in the Navy after 28 years of distinguished service. His military decorations include the Silver Star, two awards of the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, two Bronze Stars, the Air Medal, two Purple Hearts, and the Vietnam Service Medal with 13 stars. Today, Capt. Coffee is considered among the nation’s top speakers, addressing thousands each year across a broad spectrum of corporate America and international groups. His message of going beyond survival and thriving in the face of extreme odds draws not only from insights derived during his prison experience, but also from experiences like earning a Master of Arts in political science from University of California, Berkeley; studying at the prestigious National Defense University in Washington, D.C.; numerous Navy command and staff assignments, authoring books; writing a weekly political column; and his continuing interaction with hundreds of America’s corporations and associations, military units, civic groups and schools as a professional speaker. Capt. Coffee is a respected commentator on current political and military issues, seeing most challenges in terms of opportunities yet to be seized by heroic leadership. He has appeared on cable and network BUSINESS MEETING BREAKFAST MENU news, and numerous television and Bloody Marys and Mimosas Home fried potatoes radio talk shows. His bestselling book, “Beyond Survival,” was also condensed Fresh squeezed Florida orange juice and Hominy grits with shredded cheddar cheese by Readers Digest, and is in its fifth selected fruit juices Grilled sausage links and crisp bacon strips printing. We are all grateful for his leadership, and his dedication and commitment to the industry. He has led with conviction, humility and a goal of serving what is best for an industry he says has been very good to him.” During the program, we will honor this year’s Alabama Truck Driver of the Year Larry Thomas of Charles G. Keynote speaker for the event is University of Notre Dame football legend Rudy Ruettiger, who is immortalized by the classic feature film, “Rudy”.
