WELCOME... Bill Ward 2011 Convention Chairman

to the Alabama Trucking Association’s 73rd Annual Convention

T

hank you for your support and attendance of the Alabama Trucking Association’s 73rd Annual Convention and Meeting. We have an outstanding program planned, and I’m looking forward to being a part of this important industry event. Our Convention offers a mix of business and pleasure to help you better network with industry colleagues and stakeholders. As the owner of a truck and equipment dealership, I know firsthand how tough conditions are for businesses across Alabama – and beyond. The good news is things are turning around, and trucking appears to be on the cusp of recovery. Of course, we still face many obstacles such as growing operational costs and proposed changes to key regulations that threaten our ability to remain profitable. Hopefully, your time at our meeting will spur you to build a stronger and safer trucking industry for Alabama. We have enlisted the best and brightest minds in the business to share their thoughts for what lies ahead for trucking. Here are the highlights: On Thursday evening, please join us as we kick things off at a welcome reception, which includes fellowship with your colleagues, family and friends; a superb dinner; and a spectacular fireworks display over the beach. You will not want to miss this, I promise! Then Friday morning we get things going with our annual business meeting to discuss the obstacles that face our industry. The program includes an expert panel discussion on how to best cope with rising fuel costs. Representatives from several original equipment manufacturers will discuss what their respective organizations are developing to help truckers get the best fuel economy possible. The rest of the afternoon is yours to visit the beach, the surrounding Sandestin grounds, or have cartoonist Deano Minton draw a caricature of you and your family – he’ll be set up from 2 – 4 p.m. at the hotel pool area. Whatever you chose to do with your free time,

2

make sure you make it back Friday evening to join ATA Workers’ Comp Fund and Avizent for heavy hors d’oeuvres and cocktails (This event is open to all convention attendees). Saturday morning, American Trucking Associations Chairman Barbara Windsor will address our group with updates from the national organizations. Afterwards, we will hold our Convention golf tournament at the Baytowne Golf Club. To register, simply visit the ATA convention registration booth or ask an ATA staff member for more info. Later that evening, we will celebrate the leadership of current ATA Chairman of the Board Gail Cooper. Gail has been a hands-on leader, leading our Association with grace, dignity and a dedication to making the industry better, stronger and safer. During the program, we will honor our current Alabama Truck Driver of the Year Louie Haynes and will announce this year’s winner of the H. Chester Webb Award, which is this Association’s highest honor for a member. Wrapping up the evening’s festivities, we will raffle a weekend getaway package at the Sandestin Grand Hotel – but you must be present to win! Finally, I thank our many Convention sponsors this year. This has been one of best years we’ve had in terms of membership support and sponsorship. As you look through the pages of this publication, please make special note of the businesses that supported your Convention. Their generosity and commitment to trucking is strong, and they’re the reason this Association can produce such a worthwhile event. I look forward to seeing you this weekend. If you have suggestions on how we can improve our meeting, please let me know. Thanks,

Bill Ward Bill Ward 2011 Convention Committee Chairman Ward International Trucks, Mobile

BUSINESS MEETING & BREAKFAST Friday, April 29, 2011 – 8:00 - 11:00 a.m., Emerald Ballroom A, B, C

SESSION I: The recent upward trend of diesel costs has been a blow for trucking companies as the nation’s economy continues to feel the effects of the worst downturn in a generation. As of the first week on April, diesel rose for the 17th time 18 weeks, gaining 4.4 cents to a national average $3.976 per gallon, according to the Department of Energy. Energy experts say that trucking’s main fuel has risen 81.2 cents since last Thanksgiving and is 96.1 cents higher than this time last year. For trucking companies, the run-up in fuel comes at a time when most would otherwise be gearing up for an economic turnaround. In addition, many still are recovering from pricey expenditures to meet clean-air rules. Many companies pass on costs to customers with fuel surcharges, but for others that’s not an option. During the opening session of Friday’s business meeting, several representatives from leading truck and engine manufacturers will discuss and answer questions on how fleets can achieve maximum fuel efficiency. Our expert panel is composed of the following:

Alberto L. Alcalá Cummins, Inc. Alcalá has worked 15 years for Cummins Inc., starting in the parts & service organization managing customer support organizations. Prior to that, he worked for Komatsu, International, Volvo and Ford Account Manager as well as the Used Truck Manager for Cummins. He is responsible for national accounts in the Mid-South territory as well as supporting Cummins MidSouth as the factory engine sales representative. Alberto lives in Memphis with his wife and daughter.

Brett Grothen, BSME, PE Kenworth Truck Co. Brett has worked for Kenworth Truck Co. for twelve years, with responsibilities in electrical, cooling and powertrain engineering. He currently supervises the Vehicle Performance Group, which is responsible for defining and helping to improve vehicle performance and fuel economy. Brett spent seven years in engine development, overseeing the electrical integration of proprietary engines into the vehicle. During this time he also led the definition of numerous engine-related functions such as Engine PTO Mode, Engine Fan Control, and Engine Retarder Integration. Brett currently lives in Bellevue, Wash. with his wife and two children.

Kirk Gavaghan Detroit Diesel Kirk Gavaghan has been with Detroit Diesel for 20 years, holding a variety of positions within the sales organization throughout his career. He currently resides in Atlanta, Ga. and holds the position of Regional General Manager.

Don’t Miss The Alabama Truck Driving Championships May 13 & 14, 2011 • Bessemer Civic Center

T

here’s still time to enter your drivers in one of ATA’s biggest events of the year. In two weeks, more than 100 drivers, representing two dozen trucking firms, will converge on the grounds of the Bessemer Civic Center in Bessemer, Ala. for the ever- popular Alabama Truck Driving Championships, a family friendly event that pits the state’s best drivers against one another in a test of road knowledge and driving skill. Set for May 13 and 14, the Alabama TDC recognizes the state’s best drivers in eight different classes. Each Association member company can enter up to two drivers in each class. In order to compete, competitors must be employed full-time as a truck driver for an Alabama-based company or at least a company with a permanent facility in Alabama. They must also be accident-free for the previous 12month period. The competition tests drivers’ abilities behind the wheel of a large commercial truck, safety practices, and equipment maintenance knowledge. It is divided into three parts, including a written test on federal laws and safety regulations, a vehicle defects identification exam, and a timed obstacle course. The competition is scored with points given in each of four different areas. Contestants earning the most points in each class are declared champion. Winners in each class will represent Alabama in the National Truck Driving Championships set for August 9-13 in Orlando, Fla. The National competition is sponsored by the American Trucking Associations and classes include straight truck, twins, 3-axle van, 4-axle van, 5-axle van, sleeper berth, flatbed and tanks. Alabama has done quite well in recent years at the national competition starting in 2005

22

when Darrell Kimbrell, a FedEx Freight driver from Birmingham, Ala., earned the title of National Champion in the Twins class. Since then, there have been others class winners, but the state got its first grand champion when Alphonso Lewis of YRC (then Roadway) won the national competition in 2007. Kimbrell and Lewis will compete again this year, as will last year’s state champion FedEx Freight’s Ross Garner, who tallied nearly 400 combined points to win the 2010 Alabama TDC. The Decatur, Ala.-based driver won the 3-axle class, posting a tournament-high 55 points on the defects inspection, 66 points on the written exam, and 275 points on the skills course, for a combined 396 points. He beat his closest competitor by more than 30 points. Overall, last year’s Championships were a dominating display from the FedEx Freight team, which had seven of its drivers place in the competition. Other FedEx class winners were Kenneth Lockhart (Tank Trailer), Kimbrell (Twin Trailers) and Martin McDonald (Flatbed). Meanwhile, three other FedEx drivers placed in top three spots of their respective classes, including Cecil Salter (3rd place, 4axle), William Brandon (2nd place, Straight) and Richard Pratt (3rd place, Straight). Other class winners were Alphonso Lewis (4-axle) of YRC; B&G Supply Co.’s Charles Lynn (Sleeper Berth); Wal-Mart Transportation’s Dale Smith (Straight); and Winn Dixie’s Joe Banks (5-axle). Banks also earned the Rookie of the Year award for his 329 combined points. Meanwhile, the Ladies SUV champion was Kim McDondald of Mobile, whose husband, Martin, won the Flatbed class. There is still time to get your drivers signed up. For more information call 334-834-3983.

Haynes has more than 35 years of experience as a truck driver and has logged 3.1 million miles, most of which were covered in the southeastern United States. His extra-curricular service to the industry is second to none. He has competed in the Alabama Truck Driving Championships and represented the state of Alabama at the National 24

competition in the sleeper berth class in 2002. He is a long-time member of Alabama’s Road Team and has presented the “No Zone” program which demonstrates how to share the road with trucks to thousands of high school driver’s education students throughout Alabama. In addition, he is a presenter for Alabama Operation Lifesaver, the railroad crossing safety organization, and was the very first driver to participate in the Alabama Trooper RideAlong program known as TACT, ticketing aggressive cars and trucks.
