Welcome... to the Alabama Trucking Association’s 76th Annual Convention & Membership Meeting Dear Conventioneer, We once again find ourselves surrounded by our friends and colleagues at one of the top resorts on the Gulf Coast, prepared to conduct the business of this important Association. During our time here, we will discuss solutions for some of the obstacles that face our industry; learn more about the services this Association provides; congratulate those among us who have gone the extra mile in doing their jobs professionally and safely; and honor those who have served this Association through the years with excellent leadership and unwavering support. It’s not supposed to be all work, however. There will be ample time to relax and enjoy the surrounding attractions — the beach, the spa, the golf course, shopping outlets, and the company of friends and colleagues. For the past year, it has been my responsibility to make sure it’s going to a great event. Spearheading the planning committee has been a truly rewarding experience for me, and one that I hope will result in a great meeting for us all. This Association deserves no less. I want to thank Convention Finance Committee Chairman Joe Black of McGriff Tire Co. for his and his committee’s hard work in securing nearly $215,000 in sponsorships funds. His team did a great job that will allow us to gain the most from our time together. I’d like to applaud these men and women for their outstanding efforts. This year’s Convention Finance Committee members are: ATA Chairman Kevin Savoy, Greenbush Logistics, Inc.; Gary Bond, BancorpSouth Equipment Finance; Leigh Breal, Ward International Trucks; Jack Brim, B.R. This time last year, he held the same responsibility of planning for this annual meeting. There’s so much more than meets the eye when planning for an event of this scale, and his advice and guidance was a blessing. Frank and his staff also worked extremely hard, overlooking no detail to ensure that you enjoy and maximize your time here this weekend. Each of them, Jane, Lynn, Brandie, Tim and Ford, offer a wealth of experience and expertise to make it all flow smoothly as possible. A well-organized team is hard to beat. But our greatest appreciation is for the 107 ATA member firms that pledged financial support for this year’s ATA Annual Meeting & Convention. Their support of this and our many other events and programs is why the Alabama Trucking Association is among the leading trade association in Alabama, and beyond. ur 76th Annual Meeting starts off with a working breakfast in the Emerald Ballroom where attendees will hear two great presenters. First up is Ken Gronbach, a gifted speaker, author, and nationally recognized expert and futurist in the field of demography and generational marketing. He brings his brand of wit, humor and clear communication to make the science of shifting demography come alive with real life examples that make it relevant to today’s culture, business climate and economy. Mr. Gronbach has authored several books on the social and demographic changes that lie ahead for business owners. His perspective is macro, delivering the big picture for his audience. He explains how demographers are able to forecast markets, societal phenomena, and economics with uncanny accuracy because they count people, not money or things. His research also explains how the effects of an aging workforce will change the way employers will hire in the coming years, and demonstrates why other world economies, such as The European Union, Eastern Europe, The Middle East, Asia and Africa are all facing serious damaging individual demographic issues with no apparent remedy. He forecasts a large scale exodus and brain drain from these countries and regions to the two continents of the Americas. This will drive the economy of the Americas to levels never seen before.

fter a brief intermission, is Jim Morris, who at the age of 35 got a second chance at his dream of playing baseball professionally. He’d gotten his first shot at the Big Leagues, just out of college, as a pitcher, but nagging injuries and the rigors of life in general derailed him. He retired, married, began raising a family, became a high school science teacher and baseball coach, and was generally a contented man. During a particularly lousy season, Morris lectured his demoralized team about pursuing their dreams and about becoming winners. The team upped the ante and challenged him to pursue his own dreams about baseball. They knew how hard he threw a baseball and believed he had a chance. So the bet was on: If his high school team won the district championship, something they had never done, then Morris would try out for a major league baseball team. Miraculously, the team held up their end of the bet, and Morris went to an open tryout for the Majors, where he threw 12 consecutive pitches at 98 MPH to the amazement of scouts in attendance. That tryout eventually led to a pro contract to play baseball again at an age when most are retiring. Jim Morris His uplifting story, which Disney Studios made into a major production movie in 2002, shows how overcoming adversity in the pursuit of your dreams is the stuff great leaders are made of, whether it’s in business, on the battlefield, in your community, or just simply raising great kids. Mr. Morris story will enthrall and inspire attendees.

aturday morning’s Membership Meeting will focus on the general affairs and current business of the Alabama Trucking Association and the ATA Workers’ Comp Fund. Both groups will hold separate meetings with all convention attendees and guests invited to attend. Featured speaker for the breakfast is Jeff Mason, Executive Vice-President, Communications and Public Affairs for the American Trucking Associations in Washington D.C. Mason serves as publisher of the leading industry weekly tabloid, Transport Topics, and is responsible for all external communications, branding, image and outreach, and public affairs activities and serves on the executive leadership team for National ATA. Prior to joining ATA Mason was a partner with Randall Publishing Co. (now Randall Reilly) based in Tuscaloosa, Ala., spearheading that company’s multiplatform Trucking Media Div., including several print, digital and event brands and was instrumental in the acquisition, development and strategic growth of the Randall-Reilly products serving the fleet and owner-operator markets. Outside of his duties for the National ATA, Mason is active in the trucking industry, serving as past president of the Allied Committee for the Trucking Industry (ACT I), the American Trucking Associations’ Communications and Image Policy Committee, National ATA’s Chairman’s Marketing Council. He also served on the Truckload Carriers Association Board of Directors.

ongtime Evergreen Transport, Inc. employee George Jones is this year’s the Alabama Trucking Association’s Driver of the Year honor for his commitment to industry safety and professionalism in a career that has spanned five decades. Despite sharing the name of the late country music great whose reputation for occasionally missing a day’s work was legendary, Jones has an exemplary work ethic and a passion for his profession that is nothing short of inspiring. In 42 years, Jones has logged more than 4 million miles in his career with only one minor accident. But even more impressive is the fact that he has been with his current employer his entire 40-plus years behind the wheel of a commercial truck. He has worked for Evergreen founder Walter Poole, since he started his career as a young man in the early 1970s. He’s an active driver safety trainer for his company and was instrumental in helping develop the fleet’s current training program. He is also participated in the state’s Department of Public Safety’s Targeting Aggressive Cars and Trucks (TACT) program. Driver of the Year First Runner Up is Homer Kuykendall, Charles G. Lawson Trucking, Inc. in Montgomery. Southland International Trucks Inc. sponsored the Driver of the Year Award.

rapping this year’s Convention is a reception and dinner to honor current ATA Chairman of the Board Kevin Savoy, Vice President of Logistics for Greenbush Logistics — a subsidiary of Great Southern Wood, Inc. in Abbeville, Ala. At the start of his term, Chairman Savoy outlined a 10-point plan to improve the Association’s overall standing as the state’s preeminent voice for the trucking industry. His agenda has included initiatives to bolster member numbers, increase existing membership involvement in ATA events and special projects — especially among trucking firms; and fortify and improve the industry’s public image for economic development, and industry safety and professionalism. During the program, we also recognize this year’s Alabama Truck Driver of the Year, longtime Evergreen Transport, Inc. employee George Jones, who was chosen by ATA’s Safety and Maintenance Management Council for his commitment to industry safety and professionalism in a career that has spanned five decades (Read more of his accomplishments on page 16). Another highlight of this event is the announcement of this year’s winner of the H. Chester Webb Award, which is this Association’s highest honor for a member. Last year’s winner Bill Scruggs of Southland International Trucks will announce the winner. Afterwards we have really special treat that you won’t want to miss. Richie McDonald lead singer and songwriter for Lonestar one of country music’s preeminent groups, will perform an intimate acoustic set just for us. McDonald has long been one of music’s most accomplished and wide-ranging talents. Recognized as one of country’s best singers, he has been the face and voice for Lonestar for more than 20 years. A polished and engaging entertainer, he is among the industry’s most successful songwriters, penning some of the era’s most memorable songs and earned a mantle full of awards and nominations.
