Welcome to Destin! Dear Conventioneer, What a great meeting we have lined up for you. More than a year’s worth of planning went into making this convention one to remember — and hopefully one of our best ever. Some things are just worth the effort, and this event is definitely a labor of love and purpose. On behalf of Alabama Trucking Association Chairman of the Board Wayne Watkins, our Board of Directors, the 2015 Convention Finance Committee, the ATA staff, and our many gracious sponsors, I thank you for choosing to spend time with us this week. These days, Alabama’s trucking industry is hitting on all cylinders. And as a result, our Association has realized many very important milestones in the last five years. We’ve remodeled and expanded our headquarters meeting space; sustained strong membership growth; increased member support; impacted Alabama’s political climate; defeated or reversed unfair taxation and regulation on trucking businesses; worked to make our state more supportive of small businesses; and more importantly, done our part to make state roadways better and safer for all users. Those successful endeavors got their start at ATA gatherings like Convention. The underlying mission at any professional group gathering is to reconnect with those we share a common bond for our livelihood. Our Convention is about trucking in Alabama – nothing more, nothing less. Sure, we are at one of the most beautiful locations in the Southeast, and granted there will be a lot of good times, but make no mistake: We are here to work for Alabama trucking businesses like yours! This meeting is the one time each year when we can gather to confront and address the issues that face us. There’s so much planned, and this booklet gives you all the highlights and information needed to get the most from

ur meeting starts with a working breakfast in the Coastal Ballroom where attendees will hear two important presentations to make us think about our role in the trucking industry beyond the daily grind of operating a successful business. First up is Kylla Lanier, deputy director and co-founder of Truckers Against Trafficking (TAT), a Colorado-based non-profit organization that seeks to educate, equip, empower and mobilize members of the trucking industry about the critical role they can play in fighting human trafficking. The Alabama Trucking Association recently signed up to support this group’s important mission. Human trafficking and forced labor (such as drug trafficking and prostitution) are among the most destructive crimes in the U.S. Mrs. Lanier has been involved in the fight since 2007, when she helped initiate a state coalition against trafficking in Oklahoma. Today, she focuses on bringing attention of these terrible crimes to truckers across the country. Please don’t miss this important discussion.

fter a brief intermission, best-selling author and inspiration for the movie “Black Hawk Down” retired Chief Warrant Officer Four Michael Durant will tell his moving and heart-racing account of life in the line of fire as an Army helicopter pilot shot down in 1993 as part of Operation Gothic Serpent during the Somali Civil War. Little did he know that when he entered the Army in 1979 one day he would be the target of a Somali-fired grenade launcher, a prisoner of war, and the subject of an acclaimed book and major motion picture. Durant’s story is a tense one that describes vividly his experience as a soldier and a hostage, and what it taught him about being an American and a leader. aturday morning’s Membership Meeting focuses on the general affairs and current business of the Alabama Trucking Association and the ATA Workers’ Comp Fund. Both group’s leadership will present separate meetings with all convention attendees and guests invited to attend. Featured speaker for the breakfast is Dave Osiecki, Executive Vice President and Chief of National Advocacy for the American Trucking Associations in Arlington, Va. Mr. Osiecki spearheads National ATA’s advocacy initiatives, whether they are legislative, regulatory or legal in nature. More specifically, he oversees legislative and regulatory advocacy on fuel/energy issues, environmental requirements, labor, safety and security issues, as well as highway funding and truck productivity issues. He has been a stalwart for the trucking industry since joining National ATA in 1996. Since then Mr. Osiecki has served a number of roles for National ATA, including senior safety engineer, executive director of two conferences, and his current role as the trucking group’s leading lobbyist on Capitol Hill. He has been instrumental in favorably shaping numerous trucking regulations, ATA’s policy priorities for several highway bills and crafting the association’s 18-point progressive safety agenda. His presentation will focus on current industry state of affairs and pressing regulatory issues. He will describe in detail his views and ideas for building a stronger, safer and more efficient trucking industry.

he Alabama Trucking Association’s Safety & Maintenance Management Council tapped Golden Flake Transportation’s Benny Lewis as its Alabama Driver of the Year during its annual Fleet Safety Awards Banquet held last month in Birmingham. The Driver of the Year award is sponsored by Nextran Truck Center and is considered among this Association’s highest honors. Lewis has driven trucks for Golden Flake since 1978, where his duties include delivering product, unloading it by hand, and accounting supplies for inventory. Golden Flake transportation director Butch Owens calls him a “standard bearer for what a professional truck driver should be.” In his more than 50 years of working as a professional driver, his record is spotless and his reputation in the industry is impeccable. Golden Flake has even featured him in one of its recent television commercials. Mr. Lewis will be honored during Saturday evening’s Chairman’s Dinner.

apping this year’s Convention is a reception and dinner honoring current ATA Chairman of the Board Wayne Watkins, President of Watkins Trucking Co. in Birmingham, Ala. Chairman Watkins is a hands-on leader who isn’t afraid to work hard for what he believes. A lifelong trucker, he knows the business as well as anyone. He’s known for seeing the big picture for trucking, but also knows the crucial details needed to be successful. At the start of his term, he vowed to improve the Association’s overall standing as Alabama’s preeminent voice for the trucking industry. His agenda included initiatives to bolster member services, increase existing membership involvement with ATA events and special projects — especially among trucking firms; fortify and improve the industry’s public image for economic development, and encourage industry safety and professionalism. He did that, and our Association is better because of his leadership. Also, we will recognize this year’s Alabama Truck Driver of the Year, longtime Golden Flake Transportation employee Benny Lewis and his wife Flossie. Mr. Lewis was recently selected by the ATA Safety and Maintenance Management Council for his commitment to industry safety and professionalism in a career that has spanned nearly five decades. Another highlight of this event is the announcement of this year’s winner of the H. Chester Webb Award, which is this Association’s highest honor for a member.
