WELCOME... to the Alabama Trucking Association’s 74th Annual Convention
Jack W. Brim 2012 ATA Convention Chairman B.R. Williams Trucking
“All Bets On Trucking”
A
nother year has passed, and we find ourselves once again gathering to celebrate one of the nation’s most vital industries. As a trucking executive, I understand the deep impact the recent economic downturn has had for many Alabama trucking related businesses. Most sectors of the economy suffered, and ours was no different. But now, as the pendulum begins to swing back in our favor, trucking appears to be on the road to recovery, and it takes industry leaders like you to ensure that growth is sustained. Of course, we still face many pitfalls that could keep us from reaching our full potential as an industry. Major concerns like growing operational costs; changes to key regulation, and many others stand in our path. Hopefully, your time at our meeting will inspire you to build a stronger, better trucking industry for Alabama. There is a great line up of events and speakers scheduled this weekend – interesting people to share their thoughts and ideas about politics, leadership, and what lies ahead for our great industry. Here are the highlights: On Thursday evening, please join us as we kick things off at a welcome reception, which includes fellowship with your colleagues, family and friends. Friday morning we get things going with our annual business meeting to discuss the obstacles that face our industry. Speaker for this event is former Air Force One pilot Mark Tillman, who flew President George W. Bush during the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. The events and history of that tragic day are well known, but Mr. Tillman will share his mission of keeping the President of the United States safe in the midst of national emergency. Now retired from service, Mr. Tillman now directs flight operations for a private business in Arizona. You can read more about him on page 14. Friday Evening please join the ATA Workers’ Comp staff and Avizent for heavy hors d’oeuvres and cocktails (This event is open to all convention attendees) in the Pavilion, starting at 5 p.m. Saturday morning, we will hold our annual membership meeting, followed by the ATA Workers’ Comp membership meeting. 2
Afterwards Speaker of the House Mike Hubbard and Senate Pro Tem Del Marsh will provide insights and updates from the State House. That afternoon we will hold our Convention golf tournament at the Preserve Golf Club. The course is located minutes from Biloxi, just off I10 in Vancleave, Miss. If you haven’t registered for the tournament, please be aware that space is limited. Be sure to visit the ATA convention registration booth or ask an ATA staff member for more info. Later that evening, we celebrate the leadership of current ATA Chairman of the Board Bill Ward. Bill has done an outstanding job as Chairman of this Association. He has led by example, donating his time and money to ATA’s many events. He also worked to bring the membership together, especially those in the southern part of state where his business Ward International Trucks is based. His dedication to making the industry better, stronger and safer has served us well, and we are grateful for his efforts. During the program, we will also honor our 2011 Alabama Truck Driver of the Year Lawson Trucking’s Recordo Jackson and will announce this year’s winner of the H. Chester Webb Award, which is this Association’s highest honor for a member. Speaker for the event is Jeanne Robertson. I promise you, you do not want to miss her presentation! Finally, I thank our many Convention sponsors this year. This has been one of the best years on record in terms of membership support and sponsorship. As you look through the pages of this publication, please make special note of the businesses that supported your Convention. Their generosity and commitment to trucking is strong, and they’re the reason this Association can produce such a worthwhile event. I look forward to seeing you this weekend. If you have suggestions on how we can improve our meeting, please let me know. Thanks,
Jack W. Brim Jack W. Brim 2012 Convention Committee Chairman B.R. Williams Trucking Oxford, Ala.

BUSINESS MEETING & BREAKFAST Friday, April 27, 2012 – 8:00 - 11:00 a.m., Magnolia Ballroom Dress is business casual. The Alabama Trucking Association is proud to present Mark Tillman, former Commander of Air Force One under President George W. Bush as speaker for Friday’s Business Meeting & Breakfast. Chosen as the nation’s 12th Presidential pilot, Col. Mark W. Tillman (Ret.) served as pilot and commander of Air Force One for eight years and was at the controls and responsible for the President’s safety during some of the most important national events in recent history. Most notably, he piloted Air Force One on September 11, 2001, keeping President Bush out of harm’s way and connecting the flying Oval Office to the nation’s first responders. The attacks killed more than 3,000 in Washington D.C and New York and sent the nation into two wars. “There are all kinds of plans to keep the president safe, emergency action plans, in the event of nuclear attack,” Tillman told USA Today in an August 2011 article commemorating the tenth anniversary of the September 11th attacks. “Pretty much any major military attack, I knew exactly what to do with the president and where to take him to keep him safe. “This was different. This was an attack from within. We had the president who didn’t want to follow our plans for a nuclear attack, which is hide him, keep him safe and allow continuity of government.” Tillman was also the first pilot in history to fly a Commander-in-Chief into a war zone. His mission was unprecedented: transport the most targeted man in the world into the heart of terrorism. One mistake would have left the President open to attack and cost the lives of U.S. service members. Tillman personally orchestrated and executed the covert operation with flawless success. His planning, done in complete secrecy, allowed for a complete surprise to the world. He would repeat the mission three more times thereafter. Tillman’s distinguished career spans 30 years in the United States Air Force. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in 2004 and promoted to Brigadier General — the first military line officer to receive this honor. A man devoted to serving his country, this captivating storyteller will give you a first-hand account of remarkable moments in history. Breakfast compliments of

He was re-elected in 2002, 2006 and 2010. In addition to his legislative service, Hubbard served two terms as Chairman of the Alabama Republican Party. During his tenure as Chairman, Republicans won all statewide offices and gained control of both houses of the legislature for the first time in 136 years. During the December 2010 Special Legislative Session, Hubbard was elected by his colleagues in the Alabama House of Representatives as Speaker of the House becoming the first Republican Speaker since Reconstruction. He was re-elected to the position for a four-year term in January of 2011. A graduate of the University of Georgia with a degree in radio and television, Hubbard came to Auburn two weeks after graduation where he worked for six years in the Auburn Athletic Department as Associate Sports Information Director. ATA & ATA WORKERS’ COMP FUND MEMBERSHIP MEETING & BREAKFAST Continued an early age that business was his passion. While still a student Auburn University, he started his first business detailing cars for local car dealerships. Today, with more than three decades of experience in running a business, he understands the importance of job creation as it relates to the state’s economy and ventured into politics to push for legislation that encourages economic growth and protects small businesses. Just like families and businesses across Alabama have to do, he believes government should live within its means and not spend more than it takes in. Tough economic times require making tough decisions, but he views the state’s challenging budget shortfalls as an opportunity to make state government more efficient and accountable to taxpayers. During his first term as Senate President Pro Tem, Marsh significantly reduced spending by cutting his budget 65 percent, and reducing the staff of more than 40 under former leadership down to four, saving roughly $100,000 a month in personnel costs. In his former role as Finance Chairman of the Alabama Republican Party, Marsh helped Republicans win all statewide offices and gain control of the state House and Senate for the first time in 136 years. Marsh grew up in Birmingham, the son of a car salesman. While working toward a degree in industrial management, he met his wife, Ginger, an Auburn University cheerleader who was born and raised in Calhoun County. The couple has two adult children, Justin and Christine.

W
rapping this year’s Convention is a reception and dinner to honor current ATA Chairman of the Board Bill Ward of Ward International Trucks in Mobile. Because of Bill’s leadership and vision, our Association is positioned well to continue delivering valued services for our members. We are grateful for Bill’s leadership, dedication and commitment to the industry and to this Association over the past year. He has made this Association and this industry better. We will also recognize this year’s Driver of the Year Lawson Trucking’s Recordo Jackson and announce this year’s H. Chester Webb Award winner. Wrapping up the event is humorist Jeanne Robertson. Jeanne Robertson, Bill Ward who speaks to thousands of people annually, utilizes ATA Chairman her positively funny style to illustrate that a sense of of the Board humor is much more than a laughing matter—it is a strategy for success. Other speakers might be as witty as Jeanne. Some might even be as tall. (Barefoot, with her hair mashed down, she’s 6 ft. 2 in. in her size 11B stocking feet.) But nowhere will you find a speaker so adept at turning personal experiences into funny material. This Miss Congeniality winner in the Miss America Pageant, “Yearrrrrrrrrrrs ago,” quoting Jeanne, uses her down-home Southern drawl to leave her audiences laughing . . . and thinking about her message.
