Welcome to the 2014 TDC Dear Trucking Industry Friends: Welcome to the 2014 Alabama Truck Driving Championships, presented by the Alabama Trucking Association and its Safety and Maintenance Management Council. We are very proud to have each of you here today, and we certainly appreciate your hard work and dedication to showcasing our industry’s commitment to safety and professionalism. Today’s contests are part of the initial steps on the road to the National Truck Driving Championships set for August 1216, 2014 in Pittsburgh, Penn. Kevin Savoy In years past we have had our share of winners at Nationals – we have even had one of our own take the Grand Champion title, as the highest overall score during the competition (YRC’s Alphonso Lewis in 2007). Indeed, we have had much success at the National level through the years, but that success started here at the Alabama TDC, and I contend that we have one of the most, if not the best, state-level competitions in the country. Today, we have drivers from dozens of ATA member firms. All of these men and women have earned the right to be here by winning their company’s competition. More importantly these drivers are among the safest drivers on the road today, and every one of them must remain accident-free for at least one year (regardless of fault) to compete. Truth be told, that is what these competitions are really all about – showcasing how committed our drivers, safety managers, fleet managers and other industry participants are to the overall safety of the Nation’s transportation system. And we continue to improve our safety record by reducing the instances of truck-related accidents, but we are not done. As long as there are deadly accidents involving large commercial vehicles, we will remain diligent in our efforts to train our drivers and other employees how to do their jobs better and safer. Likewise, your Alabama Trucking Association is committed to this goal. Today’s event is the culmination of months of planning from our Safety and Maintenance Management Council. Each year this event improves, and the hard work of these women and men deserve our recognition. Thanks for all you do. I’d also like to thank our sponsors for this event, especially Wal-Mart Transportation, Vertical Alliance Group and the ATA Workers’ Comp Fund as our major sponsors. All of our sponsors do so much for our Association, and we are grateful for their continued support. Thank you for joining us at the 2014 Alabama Truck Driving Championships. If you have suggestions on how we can improve this event, please let me know. I hope you enjoy your time here today. I wish you the best, and good luck to all the competitors!

2014 Alabama Truck Driving Championships General Instructions - Skills Test Obstacle Course (Cont.) Usage of seat belts Drivers are required to wear their seat belts at all times while driving in the skills test. Judges at the starting line will check to determine if the contestant has fastened their seat belt before entering the course. Judges at the stop line will also verify that the contestant’s seat belt is fastened. Instructions on the usage of seat belts will also be given to the contestants during the mandatory course review (walk through) prior to the competition. A 25 point penalty will be assessed for failure to follow instructions regarding usage of seat belts. Notice to be measured On those obstacles requiring measurements to be taken, it is the contestant’s responsibility to notify the judge(s) that they are ready for measuring by sounding their airhorn in one short burst. After measurements are taken, the judge for that obstacle will give two blasts of their whistle to indicate that the measurements have been taken. The driver will then proceed to the next obstacle.

2014 Alabama Truck Driving Championships General Instructions - Skills Test Obstacle Course (Cont.) Stop signal If a contestant is going to hit a course obstacle / barrier, the obstacle judge will sound a loud whistle which will be the signal to the contestant to stop. Mechanical problems or breakdown In the event a mechanical failure occurs with the equipment on the course, the driver will sound their air horn at the point the failure occurs and stop. The time will then be stopped and the problem corrected. After mechanical repairs have been made, the driver will start back at the point of being stopped and the time restarted. If mechanical repairs are not possible or require extensive time, the equipment will be removed from the course and the contestant will be allowed to restart the course from the beginning. Professionalism Contestants should maintain a professional demeanor at all times. Contestants are not allowed any assistance and/or guidance while on the course. We understand that family members, friends, and co-workers may wish to observe contestants as they progress around the course. Please make sure to tell your family and friends to avoid any gestures or signals as they observe. These may be misinterpreted as improper assistance. Although there is a sidewalk around the parking lot where the obstacles are located, we ask that those wishing to follow your progress not use this, and keep well away from the course perimeter to avoid any appearance of improper activity. Contestants should maintain a normal driving position behind the wheel and remain seated on the driver’s seat at all times. Failure to comply will disqualify the contestant for that obstacle. Protests Any protest must be brought to the attention of the Chairman of the Truck Driving Championships by the contestant. Once a protest is filed with the Chairman, members of the Truck Driving Championships Committee will meet and make a determination regarding the protest.
