Field of dreams is one of the “feel good” movies of all time. The ghost in the cornfield didn’t ask a question; he made an emphatic statement. Ray, Kevin Costner’s character in the movie, misunderstood. Like Ray, many former athletes feel that we could have had a professional career if we were a little taller, heavier, and faster. Ray lacked talent, speed, and endurance but, he had faith. Ray traveled throughout the Midwest and the Northeast, seeking to determine exactly who was coming and what he should do about it. After seeing the movie, I traveled back to my old high school, but alas, no ghost spoke to me. The Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) has assembled the most impressive group of workforce colleges in America. They are Georgia’s workforce development field of dreams. We are second to none. Our twenty-two-college system has over sixty locations that serve all of Georgia. We have an adult education presence in each county. Our programs are well-tuned Dr. Anthony O. INNOVATION AND TECHNOLOGY COMING TOGETHER TO MAKE A BETTER EXPERIENCE FOR EVERYONE
Albany Technical College (ATC) has launched a new software platform through admissions called TargetX. TargetX identifies itself as “a Liason Company.” The goal of the new software is to guide the student from application to graduation and beyond to alumni engagement. This tool will also assist in the overall process for those involved with the students in almost every capacity at the college, assisting both faculty and staff.
organizing customer and prospect information in a way that helps you build stronger relationships with them and grow your business faster.” That sounds like a win-win for everyone involved. The Technical College System of Georgia, made up of 22 colleges, including Albany Technical College, launched this initiative at the end of 2021 in groups of 4 colleges. ATC is in the second wave of the launch, which kicked off in the last week in February 2022. This certainly is a process with a learning curve associated with it. Barbara Brown, Vice President of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management ATC, says, “I think it is a positive move in the right direction with about six months to acclimate and go from walking to running in the process. Currently, all applications are now being handled online through the software that is ‘talking’ with the existing software the college has used for years called Banner Student Information System.”
TargetX is a cloud-based solution available through Salesforce. Once a student applies, the data flows into Banner, where an important The TargetX recruitment and admissions suite enables stronger admissions decision is made, and the student enters the system. relationships with prospects, breeds better communication tactics through Dennis Sledge, IT Director at the college and the ATC TargetX project tools, and tracks students through the process while in school. The buzz manager, says that “TargetX can give insight through real-time data about this software is “customer relationship management,” referred to in about enrollment metrics, tracking recruitment activities and improving industry jargon as CRM. increases admissions productivity, and prioritizes mobile-first communication. Nudge or reminder text, emails, and phone calls are all incorporated into the planning and implementation of the management tool. The whole application process is online and easy to follow. The software holds a prospect’s hand through the entire college experience. Kenneth Williams, ATC Enrollment Management Director, says, “This does not replace people in the communication process; rather, it assists the admissions department and the students and keeps everyone on the same page with every communication that is required at exactly the time it is required.” Redesigning the student experience is at the core of the Technical College System of Georgia through this initiative. Retention always becomes part of the dialogue in higher education circles to empower student success through initiatives like this; using technology to redesign the student experience will be a game-changer in the short run. The student life-cycle managed through customer relationship management CRM has proven successful with other colleges around the country. These tools engage with the student, further enriching student success and providing the college with rich marketing services designed to help shape events, including financial aid and registration for classes each semester. Kennosha Hawkins, Registrar for Albany Technical College, says, “I can see TargetX as a growth solution resulting in the growth of classes and increased graduation results. It will expand application pools and streamline the efficiency of the admission’s inner office.” According to the TargetX website, “Together, the combined business is the largest admissions company in the world, currently used in one out of every three colleges across
the country, uniquely positioned and highly qualified to completely fulfill the complexity of requirements for any admissions or student success office. Mission statement: We are a higher-ed company. We build enterprise software that will challenge colleges and universities to transform the way they support their prospects, students and alumni. We strive to be the premier solution for student life-cycle management focused on student experience and outcomes.” The point of contact with a potential student or current student is called the touchpoint. This touchpoint is necessary communication and needs to be meaningful, personalized, and at a level of engagement that makes the student feel like they desire it. The following steps of a visit to campus or registration should feel seamless and not leave anyone feeling confused or like it was a hassle. Every student’s experience with Albany Technical College should be pleasant and memorable both online and in person. The goal of this new approach will increase the probability of graduation on time and leave every person on both sides of the experience - students, faculty, and staff - feeling like the process was done right.

A brief description of the significant equipment updates made through this renovation are listed below: • A-dec 500 Dental Chair with a Continental Delivery System and LED Dental Light • A-dec 500 Operator and Assistant Stools with backrest • A-dec Inspire Treatment console with 12 o’clock Assistants’ Instrumentation and 22” monitor • A-dec Inspire Central Console with pass through X-ray Units Also added the following to other areas of the space:
Unveiling of the New Dental Assisting Lab Renovations created a state-ofthe-art environment to learn. Albany Technical College (ATC) Dental Assisting Program had a ribbon cutting of the newly renovated lab on February 3, in Nathaniel Cross Health Technology Building (HCT), room 103. Renovations to the lab were discussed along with opportunities available in the job market here in Southwest Georgia for dental assistant graduates. The event was also virtual, and broadcast live on Albany Tech’s YouTube Channel.
The previous lab had four operatories with equipment that became outdated. A new lab was designed several years ago to update the teaching facilities with state-of-the-art equipment. The current practices/uses of modern dentistry were taken into consideration. The lab is now 95% complete, allowing for the best educational experience possible for students in the program.
• A-dec Inspire Sterilization Center
“The new layout better utilizes the assigned space we have here at Albany Technical College, allowing for functionality and better student learning experiences. We are extremely proud of the space that has been designed and cannot wait to share it with the community,” stated Dr. Anthony Parker, President of Albany Technical College.
• Student lockers
“We started with a vision of the lab and hand drawings, working with the architects creating digital blueprints. The process has taken a while, but we are pleased to say that the Dental Assisting Program now has six fully operational dental operatories with pass-through x-ray units. These changes give the students a reallife workforce simulation versus having separate x-ray rooms like before,” said Ivey Spears, Chair of Dental Assisting.
• 6.6-gallon Ultrasonic Cleaner • Vistapure System • Nomad (portable x-ray system) • Reception Area with patient seating and reception desk • Dental Lab with 12 student stations and a large island to accommodate 12 students and has 2 mobile instructor tables.
The total cost for renovations to the Dental Assisting Program, including equipment, was a little over $1,054,000.

MANUFACTURING INNOVATION CENTER UNVEILING Albany Technical College discussed the rebranded Manufacturing Innovation Center on campus and launched a Mobile STEM Lab. The event took place on Slappey Blvd., at the building, near the Pedestrian bridge. The rebranding of the Manufacturing Technology Center to the “Manufacturing Innovation Center” (MIC) is a slight but essential difference. The change of name better reflects the critical thinking involved in today’s manufacturing industry. “The name ‘Manufacturing Innovation Center’ communicates the changes in the industry. The ongoing commitment by Albany Technical College to stay well-informed of the needs of manufacturers in the area is a priority. The challenges to the industry in the coming years will dictate that we work closely with employers
to make sure we are at the cutting edge of training graduates as they enter the workforce,” said Dr. Anthony Parker, President of Albany Technical College. The many issues related to manufacturing, including supply chain problems, plant floor capacity, consumer demand changes, and spending patterns, have created an industrywide transformation. One of the most significant factors has been the pandemic that seems uncertain as we move forward. Manufacturing has undeniable challenges that will open opportunities in the near future. Companies will need to prepare for the unexpected, to “INNOVATE” by introducing new methods, ideas, or products. This resiliency will change the industry in the coming years and change how an employee will do the job as the industry moves forward. Ever changing circumstances call for nimbleness and calculated decisions to answer tough questions. Tying the three areas together: technology, people, and the process will make companies successful.

L.E.A.P. Leveraging Education for Advancement Program
A Program Provided by Albany Technical College
REGINA WATTS Director of Special Needs L.E.A.P. Director Albany Technical College, (ATC) located in southwest Georgia, is a public, 2-year institution committed to providing higher education and life-long learning opportunities that promote self-sufficiency, economic development, and community growth and sustainability. Aligning with the mission of the college, the Leveraging Education for Advancement Program (LEAP) is an Inclusive Postsecondary Education Program (IPSE) that is designed to provide students with intellectual and developmental disabilities, ages 18 and older, an inclusive college experience. As Georgia’s only technical college with an IPSE program, ATC’s LEAP program focuses on developing academic, personal, and self-advocacy skills that lead to employment self-sufficiency. Along with being afforded the opportunity to enroll in credit-bearing classes, students participate in career development options and social integration. Virtually all students who enroll come from historically underserved populations, and several of our students are also first-generation
college students. This requires careful attention to providing resources that will help us retain students until they successfully complete their programs of study. This includes intensive advisory services, quality contact throughout the semester, and ongoing, individualized services. Through a mentor program, we connect students with peers who share their interests. LEAP is unique in that it offers for-credit credentials that are approved by the Technical College System of Georgia, which are also available to all Albany Tech students. Students enroll in only one course per semester, and can choose from a list of 15 certificates or one diploma program, which can be completed in 12 to 24 months. Each student receives one-on-one instructional aid from LEAP staff as they engage in college-level courses taught by ATC faculty. In addition to the academics, students participate in hands-on training in their areas of study. Reasonable accommodations, modifications, and services are provided, empowering the students while promoting equal access to educational opportunities. Additionally, Georgia residents attending a technical college earn a college education with no out-of-pocket costs to the student by qualifying for PELL, the Georgia HOPE grant, funding from the Georgia Vocational Rehabilitation Agency or an annual grant awarded by the Georgia Council on Developmental Disabilities. In alignment with ATC’s strategic plan, LEAP also partners with high schools and transition specialists, who are a strong referral source. We also participate in a disability-focused community collaborative. These relationships broaden ATC’s community relations efforts and enhance our ability to attract students from all backgrounds. Since 2016, there have been seven LEAP graduates who received a recognized college credential. Of those graduates, five are competitively employed. Five more students will participate in graduation this spring, and we expect to have 10 students in the program in the fall of 2022. Our challenges include having to overcome below-average reading comprehension levels and the effects of students’ lack of selfconfidence. Many of the LEAP students were told and believed that there were no options for them after high school. With the

implementation of the IPSE option, however, students with IDD have a restored confidence and hope in the possibilities. One of the first students to enroll was extremely shy and timid. “This program has given me self- confidence. It makes me feel good to be in the LEAP program,” he said. “I want everyone to know that people like myself can do anything they set their mind to do if they believe in themselves.” Along with four of the other graduates, he has acquired and maintains competitive employment to this day. The program contributes to the creation of a caring campus community and a productive learning environment that helps the students thrive academically and socially while learning life skills. The students are encouraged to say what is important to them and to build the confidence to voice their needs. “I won’t have to rely on other people (after graduating). I’m being prepared to go into the real world,” said one student who is working on a diploma in early childhood education. The LEAP program is an option for students who have historically been underserved by our higher education system. It sets the tone for what possibilities are available to this population of students, and shows them that they can achieve greater heights. Students leave the LEAP program determined, self-aware, and better prepared for obstacles they may face. They, too, are future leaders of tomorrow.

THE NEW MOBILE STEM LAB
20 ®
“The most immediate applications of A.I. have been directed toward assisting us in our daily lives: robots to vacuum our floors and deliver our groceries or deep learning programs to help us decide what is best to eat - all to make our lives feel somewhat easier. To do so, however, requires data, lots of data. And in the gathering of that data, A.I. can become invasive, making our lives feel somewhat more vulnerable.”
AT ALBANY TECHNIC AL COLLEGE The objective of the Mobile STEM lab is to expose current and prospective students to the different facets of engineering technology by way of providing instruction and demonstrating the usage of engineering-associated equipment and tools. In August 2019, the college initiated a request to purchase a Mobile Stem Lab for the engineering department. The $280,000 lab was finished late last year and is now ready to use in the community. It was funded by grant money from the U.S. Department of Education. For years, transportation to campus has been an issue for our students in the surrounding rural counties. This new lab will enable the college to provide students with information on engineering fields based on the lab’s resources and provide ATC the opportunity to offer instructional engineering classes within the mobile lab. “The STEM field is not only growing for individuals to enter the workforce and get these kinds of jobs but also cultivates the students, helping with their problem solving and critical thinking skills and we want to encourage more students to get involved in the STEM field,” said Dr. La’Quata Sumter, Program Chair, Instructor in Electrical and Computer Engineering. The 30-foot trailer is custom made with ten computer workstations, air conditioning, sound-deadening walls, a lavatory, a 40” external viewable monitor, a 55” touchscreen TV, speakers, and a wireless microphone system. The lab also has a 24-port switch CAT 6 network with printer and scanner, a router, and two roof-mounted antennas. A 12-kilowatt diesel generator is available for power. The plan is to take this mobile lab on the road out into the Albany Tech 7 county service delivery area including Dougherty, Lee, Terrell, Randolph, Clay, Calhoun and Baker counties and introduce students to STEM and the world that it opens up in terms of education.

WHAT IS STEM AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO OUR FUTURE? According to the U.S. Department of Education, it’s more important than ever that our nation’s youth are prepared to bring knowledge and skills to solve problems, make sense of information, and know how to gather and evaluate evidence to make decisions. These are the kinds of skills that students develop in science, technology, engineering, and math. The educational website goes on to say, “If we want a nation where our future leaders, neighbors, and workers can understand and solve some of the complex challenges of today and tomorrow, and to meet the demands of the dynamic and evolving workforce, building students’ skills, content knowledge, and literacy in STEM fields is essential. We must also make sure
that, no matter where children live, they have access to quality learning environments. A child’s zip code should not determine their STEM literacy and educational options.” With the growth in biomedicine, microfabrication, robotics and artificial intelligence, its never been more important for students to have an opportunity to learn about these things that will be seen and utilized in everyday life in the modern world. The next generation of innovators will need to develop the critical thinking skills that will lead to new products and processes. Our economy demands that these kinds of thinkers are in place to economics. The solid knowledge bases in these STEM areas is vital for our future. STEM occupations usually offer higher than normal wages. Employment growth in these areas is higher over the next 10 years than non-STEM jobs. The focus on hands-on learning in applications will spark creativity and drive innovation as we

move deeper into the 21st century. STEM education gives people skills that make them more employable. This well-rounded education enables a deeper understanding of the world around us. Innovation like this can lead to new products and better ways of doing business more efficiently. According to theEdvocate, an online advocate group arguing for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education, there are 7 benefits of STEM education in our early childhood and k-12 system: • Fosters ingenuity and creativity • Encourages experimentation • Encourages teamwork • Encourages knowledge application • Encourages tech use • Teaches problem-solving • Encourages adaption Students who are trained in this manner will apply what they have learned and by taking these learned scenarios into the future, they will be able to adapt those concepts in problems or issues that may arise. The blend of career and skills education via mobile brings the in-classroom opportunities directly to the kids that need it so badly. It really is an engaging and hands-on experience that leaves a student excited about the possibilities in fields that may seem intimidating at a distance. Exposing kids to this traveling classroom can open up a world that can change their life in exciting and relevant ways.

AN ELECTRIFYING VISIT LEADERSHIP ALBANY WRITTEN BY: DR. BANDARA GAMINI It was an electrifying visit for the 2022 Leadership Albany Class when they visited Albany Technical College. Acquainting themselves of the educational opportunities in Albany is one mission of Leadership Albany. Above and beyond mere acquaintance, hands-on experiences in the labs the participants were impressed with Albany Tech; they now know we have some of the best facilities and personnel of any educational and training institution. Their visit highlighted the Leadership Albany Class February program “Reimagine: Technology & Innovation” The Engineering Technology lab tours were coordinated by Dean Lisa Harrell, graduate of Leadership Albany. Leadership Albany Class visited the Rapid Prototyping lab, where they saw real world applications of 3D printers. Prof. E. Mallory discussed with the Leadership Albany Class the educational benefits of 3D printing, the growing world of 3D printing which makes rapid prototyping more effective by giving students a tangible learning platform. From concept to creation, students in the Engineering Graphics program can expand their skills and challenge their creativity through rapid prototyping with 3D printing.
Prof. Mallory demonstrated a variety of software, including Autodesk products (Revit, AutoCAD, and Inventor) and SolidWorks used in the lab along with the 3D printing, (ABS, PLA, specialty printer which uses a compressed power and resin combination, and one printer which uses a steel metal composite material with ceramic supports) scanning, and laser cutting technology available to the students. She explained how the program works closely with community partners to bridge the gap between the current supply and demand needs of small items that can quickly be reverse engineered and reproduced in the lab. Dr. Yahya, Chairperson of the Sustainable Renewable and Alternate Energy Program, discussed with the Leadership Albany Class the new program on sustainable/renewable energy at Albany Technical College. He also discussed the importance of renewable and alternate energy for environmental reasons, energy independence, mitigating volatile fossil fuel markets, and also independence for clients who want to generate their own energy. He also described the instructional program, which builds on existing electrical construction, especially circuits and wiring, with additional coursework in renewable energy technologies, photovoltaic systems, installation for both large scale farms and residential roof-top, and maintenance. Dr. Yahya demonstrated the indoor lab for training students on solar PV technology, installation, and troubleshooting/ maintenance. Due to the connections made with the Leadership Albany Class, the Sustainable Renewable and Alternate Energy Program already has made leads for internships to full time employment opportunities for students

The next stop was the newly implemented state-of-the art electronics lab. This lab provides our students with skills and knowledge for them to be productive employees from day one. From basic electronic components, circuits, troubleshooting to advanced automation and controls, the laboratory is a learning environment of excellence. Under the direction of students in the electronics program, the Leadership Albany Class first built a circuit using an online simulation package from PhET, developed under Dr. Carl Wieman (of the Bose–Einstein condensate and 2001 Nobel Prize in Physics.) Next the students built an actual real-life circuit, using a DC power supply, breadboard, LED, motor and a switch. The group activity in the electronics lab provided a forum for the participants to better know each other. The participants, with their increased knowledge of Albany Technical College’s excellence in Engineering technology, provided an avenue of familiarity of locally available training and educational opportunities. According to Leadership Albany and Albany Technical College liaison Dean Lisa Stephens, graduate of Leadership Albany, the 2022 Leadership Albany Class was abundantly impressed with the experience, the highlight of their day. In meeting the needs of The Leadership Albany program, the Albany Technical College visit fulfilled their goal of “Reimagine: Technology & Innovation” learning and experiencing first-hand the leading-edge innovation and technology are being used to push our businesses and community forward and create better outcomes for its residents and stakeholders.

HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY New Options Available
Albany Technical College had a special presentation featuring the Adult Education Department Thursday, January 20. Adult Education discussed services along with new initiatives that include obtaining a high school equivalency while training for a new career. Dr. Cayanna Good, Assistant Commissioner with the Technical College System of Georgia, Adult Education, attended. “Everyone needs to make a living wage, and in today’s world, you are required to have a certain level of education. Not everyone has a high school diploma for various reasons and life circumstances. Through our opportunities here at the college in Adult Education, a person can easily complete the equivalent of a high school diploma and move on to earn a career through a multitude of diploma and degree options,” stated Anthony Parker, President of Albany Technical College. The Adult Education Program’s mission has always focused on educational opportunities for students through necessary basic skills -- reading, writing, computation, speaking and listening -- to compete successfully in today’s workplace. A student has never had more choices than today, with multiple options for achieving a high school equivalency. Two computer-based testing (CBT) pathways are available through testing centers or proctored at home: the GED® test or the HiSET® exam. ATC Adult Education also offers a workforce-based solution to a high school equivalency (HSE) through joint enrollment called Career Plus HSE. Linda Coston, Vice President of Adult Education, said, “Our department works with a person one-on-one from the beginning, assessing present skills, counseling, and advising as to the best choices available to obtain high school equivalencies. We take it one step further with career path options making sure that students see the choices available and is on the right track at the college.”
FOR MORE INFORMATION: Adult Education Main Office Artesian Hall, Room 118 Albany Technical College 1704 South Slappey Blvd Albany, GA 31701

MILESTONE 50 COMMERCIAL TRUCK DRIVING GRADUATE IN THE FALL
Albany Technical College has reached a milestone with 50 students completing the Commercial Truck Driving Program for Fall 2021. This is an Albany Technical College record number of graduating students. The program is offered in 8-week terms, Monday through Friday, with a choice of daytime or nighttime classes. The objective is to provide the student with the knowledge and hands-on training necessary to obtain a Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL) required to operate any combination of vehicles with a gross combination weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, provided the towed vehicle is heavier than 10,000 pounds. “Reaching 50 graduates from the Commercial Truck Driving Program is momentous. Commercial truck drivers and diesel technicians have been in high demand in our region and across the country,” commented Dr. Anthony O. Parker, President of Albany Technical College. “The Transportation Academy has the potential to speak to and solve a twofold workforce need. By intentionally focusing our efforts on career training in these areas, we present a path forward to those who reside in our community who are looking for a job that pays well and offers health benefits.” With these jobs, people can support themselves and their families and build a great future. The benefit to the community is that the Transportation Academy graduates provide local industries with a qualified and trained pool of talent. This ensures a robust system in our community to move the goods made here to market in a cost-effective, competitive manner. Dennis Oliver, Chair/Instructor of Commercial Truck Driving, says “Before students enter the program, they need to download the “CDL prep” app from Apple or Android Play store. It’s free and this is a study guide for general knowledge, combinations, and air brakes. This study guide is necessary to obtain AP license at the local DMV before entry to our Commercial Truck Driving class.”

MEET THE NEW ACCOUNTING INSTRUCTOR HYEKYUNG “HANNAH” SEO
MEET THE NEW FINANCIAL AID DIRECTOR KIERRA SPARKS Albany Technical College welcomes a new Director of Financial Aid. Kierra Sparks has been hired as the new financial aid director at Albany Technical College. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Georgia Southwestern State University in 2015 and a Master of Public Administration from Georgia College & State University in 2020. Prior to joining Albany Tech, Kierra worked at South Georgia Technical College in admissions. She began her financial aid journey in 2017 when she was promoted to Financial Aid Specialist. In that position, she assisted students with completing the requirements to become eligible for financial aid assistance. Kierra joined the team at Albany Technical College in February 2020 as the Assistant Director of Financial Aid. In the Assistant Director position, Kierra helped the financial aid director implement financial aid processes, ensured that federal regulations were adhered to, hosted financial aid workshops, assisted with training management duties, and provided supervision and guidance to financial aid staff. Ms. Kierra Sparks commented, “I am humbled to serve as the Financial Aid Director for Albany Technical College. As the Assistant Director of Financial Aid, my skillset, knowledge, and passion for serving students has prepared me for a more demanding opportunity.” Kierra is a resident of Montezuma, Georgia, and a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.
In December 2021, Hyekyung “Hannah” Seo came on board under the Business division as the new Program Chair/Instructor for Accounting at Albany Technical College. Mrs. Seo is new to Albany Technical College, but she is not new to the area. She has lived here for over 20 years. She and her husband moved to the United States from South Korea to get his Ph.D. in chemistry about three decades ago, and they have resided in Leesburg for the past 20 years. While raising and educating two sons in the Albany region, Mrs. Seo continued her education in the hopes of becoming a professor, which had always been her ambition. Mrs. Seo said, “I worked for five years in the accounts receivable department in the early 1990s, and it was there that I realized accounting was a good fit for me so, despite having a bachelor’s degree in Library & Information Science from Korea’s ChonNam National University, I pursued a master’s degree in business administration and a master’s degree in accounting.” She graduated from Georgia Southwestern State
University with an MBA in 2008 and then received her MAcc degree from Kennesaw University in 2015. “While in graduate school, I served as a principal of Korean School of Columbus 2009- 2015 for six years. The Korean school in Columbus offers weekend sessions for pre-K to college students interested in learning the Korean language and culture. I redesigned the school’s curriculum and program, hired teachers, and handled business with the Korean General Consulate in Atlanta, as well as all other administrative matters,” stated Mrs. Seo. Mrs. Seo taught accounting classes at Albany State University Cordele Center (previously Darton State College) for a year from 2015 to 2016 until ASU and Darton merged. That teaching experience provided her with both teaching and learning opportunities. “I’ve always wanted to teach again since it’s such a rewarding experience not only to see students improve and achieve their goals but also feeling like I’m continuously learning and growing as an instructor and a person,” said Mrs. Seo.
