ALBAOLA the Sea Factory of the Basques is located in Pasaia and is a visit not to be missed by lovers of maritime culture and history. This traditional Shipbuilding Museum is a singular space, where ship-builders can be watched as they use traditional techniques from the era to construct the San Juan whale ship, a replica of the large 16th century galleon built in the village and which sunk in Canadian waters in 1565. This project is unique in the world and is the only naval construction to be sponsored by UNESCO given the scientific rigour of the construction process and its faithfulness to the original object. The visit consist of a circuit made up of the museum, the carpentry workshop and the spacious shed where building of the San Juan in underway.
