Traversing Emptiness: A Visual Journey

Alejandra Repetto Escardó is an Argentinean-Uruguayan visual artist with an outstanding national and international career. With a dAegree in Visual Arts and a National Professor of Painting from the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes Prilidiano Pueyrredón, she is currently completing a Master's degree in History of Argentine and Latin American Art at the Universidad Nacional de San Martín Her career includes a remarkable teaching career at the National University of the Arts (UNA)

She has participated in numerous exhibitions and awards, such as the Salón Nacional de Artes Visuales, the Salón Municipal, the Premio Sívori, the Premio UADE, the Banco de Córdoba and the Premio Avon Among her distinctions are the First Mention at the Painting Salon of the Ateneo Popular de La Boca, the National Painting Prize "Jerusalem: past, present and future" at the Palais de Glace in Buenos Aires, the Critics' Prize and the Art Galleries Prize at the National Painting Salon of the Avon Foundation She has exhibited individually at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Raúl Lozza, the Museo Municipal de Bellas Artes de Tandil and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo La Plata, Her work is present in public and private collections

Alejandra Repetto Escardó's work stands out for its conceptual depth by exploring the relationship between geometry and infinity, expressing in her compositions the concept of the Void taken from Zen Her art explores complementary opposites, crafting a materiality that encourages reflection on aesthetic duality Light is used as a symbolic element that brings dynamism to each creation

As a plastic artist from the Rio de la Plata and Latin America, she takes up concrete art from a lyrical and conceptual point of view In her search for metaphysical depth, she arrives at a sensitive geometry in which she relives the landscapes of her childhood sailing on the Río de la Plata. The experience of the abstract visions of the horizon line divided by a warm palette of colours and the river as a mirror, added to the silent morning mist tinged with pinks and ochres, lead her to an encounter with the romantic spirit In her intention to capture the mood of the scene, the Argentinean-Uruguayan artist witnesses the total dematerialisation of the landscape A circular dialogue that goes from the informalist resignification of her vibrant monochromes at the beginning to the metaphysical structuralism of the River Plate, following a continuous relationship between geometric form and infinity

Her plastic work is marked by fundamental milestones linked to the archetypal form of the Void The artist explores her unconscious for childhood images, which formally and conceptually align with Zen Buddhist principles, resonating with the landscapes impregnated in her memory Silence and emptiness function as bridges to infinity Three common axes: emptiness, silence and infinity, for three geometric forms that remain on the canvas and throughout her work: the square and the triangle serving the circle, the sacred form

Emptiness Series and Light Variations

In the “Void” series, Alejandra introduces her initial reflections on infinity and Zen Buddhism, showcased in her solo exhibition "Time and Space" at the Metropolitan Museum of Buenos Aires in 2004 Here, she explores monochrome as a concept of emptiness, in which canvases become sources of light, enhancing the representation of the Void. A reflective informalism intersects with the colour experience of Latin American concrete art. A vibrant space meets the depth of a contemplative experience

The same is true of the series “Variations of Light”, in which the use of minerals, mica and graphite allows the creation of kinetic and optical experiences through their interaction with light In this series, the module creates rhythm and repetition in sequences of light The ambiguity between background and figure develops in a space of light and shadow that veils and reveals, in an allusion to the hidden, the interior, the illusory

Series Between lines and alternations

“Between lines and Alternations” Series is presented at MACLA Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de La Plata, Argentina in 2015 The planes of colour of her monochrome, rhythmic, random, and vibrant compositionsThe play of complementary opposites manifests itself in an apparently random contradiction between the formal and the informal; between positive and negative spaces; between brushstrokes, hits and misses In this way geometry becomes humanised, crossing the ethereal and abstract space to give way to materiality, the artist integrates alchemical elements related to the concept of polarity

All paradoxes can be reconciled

In Hermetic philosophy, the principle of polarity states: "Everything is double, everything has two poles Every pair of opposites: like and unlike are the same; opposites are identical in nature, but different in degree; extremes touch; all truths are half-truths; all paradoxes can be reconciled"

In many of her works, the sequence of order is not pre-established; the compositional options multiply the possibilities In other pieces, the line searches for light within a compositional grid and then transforms into oblique planes Subsequently, these planes are articulated in an informal geometry The compositional structure allows the play of opposites through polarities and accidents, exploring contrasts such as concrete/informal, complementary colours, line/plane, order/disorder, and empty/full

Continuing the concept of polarity initiated at MACLA, in her next exhibition, 'All paradoxes can be reconciled', at the Museo de Bellas Artes de Tandil in 2015, MUMBAT presents the “Lux” Series, transforming the grid into a line and giving life to a series of ten works that explore space, light and mathematical relationships with the sublime

Child's Play Series

The Series “Child´s Play” where the subtleties of "Between lines and Alternations” become certainties of pure colour. It presents a meticulous series of fourteen works of the same format exhibited consecutively that form a circular route without beginning or end In this series the artist explores the notion of the circle as an archetypal infinite sequence, while playing with the dynamism of the planes of colour in an important solo exhibition in 2016 at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Raúl Lozza in Buenos Aires

The circle that makes up the group of works appears as a metaphor for infinity in a Moebius strip where play is the gateway. It is a dynamic series that reflects elements of geometry, in which, once again, the artist evokes childhood, that state of primordial innocence that Alejandra Repetto Escardó represents in her earliest monochromes The idea of the eternal return appears as a sequence of panels arranged in a topological form, and this time the informalist and contemplative imprint gives way to a playful and concrete experience

"I thought of the Child's Play Series as a metaphor for the circle, as an infinite sequence, rhythm and cadence I remembered children's games where the imprint of geometry, playfulness and the unexpected appears Kaleidoscope, hopscotch, puzzles, dominoes and so many others I remembered my childhood"

Trinities Series

The exploration of infinity is further developed at both the visual and conceptual levels in the “Trinities” Series, which begins with the exhibition at the Palacio de Hacienda of the show “Substantia (Naturaleza Inmutable)” in 2021 and continues in 2023 at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Raúl Lozza with the show “En clave de tres (In the key of three)”

The works are structured in triads, using the number three both as a magical symbol in Zen and as a sacred symbol in many cultures and religions The circle, triangle and square are basic geometric shapes representing the three fundamental elements of the universe: heaven, earth and man The combination of these geometric shapes symbolises the totality and harmony of the universe.

The compositional dynamics present a rhizomatic narrative in which everything multiplies in the key of three, generating a work with a complex yet visually simple internal structure that invites a harmonious and organic experience The artist creates a structure that reveals complex relationships of space, connecting the viewer profoundly to their own transcendental space in a deep and meaningful way

The triangle symbolizes the trinity of Being, representing the union of heaven and earth, and the connection between humanity and the sacredThe circle symbolizes infinity, while the square is the primordial form of human creation Colour is used symbolically, with complementary opposites in a desaturated palette, accompanied by transparencies and glazes that create an ethereal space Gold, present in the communicating lines and circles, is a clear allusion to alchemy

The titles of the works and polyptychs that make up the Series, such as "Solaris", "Substantia Etérea", "Epiphany", "Les Mariannes" and "Subtilissima Substantia", bring greater clarity to the whole and invite us to reflect on the relationship between the divine and alchemy. The colours vary in intensity, evoking the cycle of life, while the gold, in its divine and infinite character, remains unchanging In Substantia Etérea, the artist explores the hermetic principle of vibration, which holds that everything in the universe moves and vibrates in electric waves The gradation of colors symbolizes this vibration, reflecting the infinite multiplication of the number three In this way, sensible geometry manifests itself as sacred geometry, representing the trinity of Being and its connection with the divine

Geometría y magia

Geometry and magic

After working with the circle as a vehicle of infinity and the triangle as an expression of the sacred, the square is now analysed through a sensitive and spiritual geometry in Magic Square. These are the sixteen panels that make up the polyptych Geometry and Magic harmonizing with each other and the whole The ethereal, the veiled and the symbolic appear again, merging with geometric elements of infinite possibilities

Just as science deals with the problems of the body, philosophy resolves the questions of the mind; however, the answers needed by the spiritual world are often aligned under the terms of magical and religious thought Such concepts that explore the connection between form and meaning are a constant in the artist and this work is no exception The magic square is not only used as a magical and protective artefact in mathematical combinations, but is also a theme explored in art and religion, as exemplified by Dürer in 'Melancholia' and Gaudí in 'La Sagrada Familia'

It is also a reflection of a primordial knowledge that has to do with the magical constant of the number thirty-four, representing a mathematical mystery The polyptych is a clear reference to the existence of magic that multiplies incessantly in a game of eternal combinations that reveals the mastery with which Alejandra Repetto Escardó achieves the fusion between the geometric precision used and the theoretical and conceptual depth.

Aer Series

Alejandra Repetto Escardó is currently working on her series Aer, which she recently exhibited in New York and in Palm Beach After 25 years and in a circular way she returns to the monochromes of her beginnings, but this time resignified after having experienced the path (Tao) Light and colour become immaterial

The soft mist of the walks of her childhood returns sailing on the Río de la Plata, which will always be present The silent pink sunrises on the horizon that divide the plane, and the verticals and diagonals of the slowly moving sailboats Labyrinthine channels like random geometric lines create an enchanted corner where time seems to stand still. A new world is built from ancient formulas. A dreamlike landscape, a slow, meditative and Zen rhythm. Geometric calm dominates the scene once again Silence gives way to contemplative experience The taste for representing emptiness in a painted veil now approaches transparency

Infinity is now only a matter of time
