Arena Dear Selection Committee: Studio AP Squared is pleased to present qualifications and highlight our firm’s credentials for this proposed arena. Studio AP Squared is a recognized leader in the design of multi-use sport and entertainment venues, and our firm has the resources required to design the Minnesota Timberwolves New Arena. We recognize the significant opportunity this project offers to create a world class and dynamic facility that contributes to the unique culture of Minneapolis and matches the excitement the Timberwolves and Lynx bring to the city. Our team possesses the passion, dedication and creativity necessary to maximize the potential of this opportunity. Our team maintains continuing research on multi-purpose arenas and stadiums to cultivate a comprehensive understanding of design trends and user needs. Our concepts aim to combine urban design, public space-making, premium amenities, sponsorship and marketing, and to relate the architectural expression to the unique culture of the site. These goals intend to keep both the Timberwolves and Lynx in Minneapolis at least until 2032, attract more top acts from around the country and positively impact the ongoing growth and quality of life of the city’s residents.

DESIGN NARRATIVE 12

WHY CHOOSE OUR DESIGN?

13

N

N

KEY 1 INNOVATIVE DESIGN The current Target Center overpowers the site and allows for little public open space. Rotating the bowl for the new arena introduces several advantages that contrast with Target Center’s current alignment.

Bowl Without Rotation

Bowl With Rotation 1.

N

N

Strengthen pedestrian engagement through an entry atrium and public plaza.

2.

Open the seating bowl to

unrivaled views of Target Field and Downtown Minneapolis. 3.

Increase sideline seating capacity by

17%

14

KEY 2 24/7 BRANDING & ENGAGEMENT The existing Skyway merely passes through Target Center with limited advertising possibilities. Why not embrace this opportunity to create a 24-7 retail and advertising hub? 1.

Over 8000 people pass through this Skyway each day on their commute. Let them buy their morning coffee in your atrium.

2. Give your sponsors ac-

cess to exceptional

advertising space. 3.

Increase fan engagement and excitement with around-the-clock access to the atrium, while generating more revenue.

UNITEDHEALTH ATRIUM

15

KEY 3 DESTINATION MINNEAPOLIS Rotating the bowl produces a unique opportunity to create a public plaza at the bustling intersection of 1st and 6th, giving the team an unparalleled urban pedestrian presence. 1. Host community gatherings

such as food truck festivals

and the farmer’s market in the 20,000 square foot

plaza. 2. Serve as a spot for people to

work, play, relax and socialize. 3. Become much more than an

event-day destination; become an

everyday destination.

16

17

SITE CONTEXT 18

BUILDING LOCATION

N

While the site is currently home to Target Center, it certainly has its challenges. It is one of the most compact in the NBA and the grade drops considerably towards the north corner. Nevertheless, its urban location allows for many potential links with Downtown and neighboring Target Field. These con-

straints and possibilities informed our approach to locating facility service areas and how the new arena would be situated on the site.

N

KEY Existing Skyway ReconďŹ gured Skyway

SKYWAY EXTENTS The Minneapolis Skyway is a series of elevated bridges that total 7 miles in length and cover 69 downtown blocks. Since almost 30% of fans

arrive at the arena via the Skyway, our design celebrates this particular aspect of Minneapolis culture as part of the front door of the arena. The Skyway is an incredible location for increased fan engagement and revenue generation during event and non-event days. 20 2 0

BOWL VIEWS

N

Although the initial idea of rotating the bowl came from the goal of increasing the seating capacity along the sidelines, this building conďŹ guration introduced a tremendous opportunity to connect the seating bowl to the surrounding urban fabric. 1. Picturesque views of the

Minneapolis skyline and the Twins’ Target Field 2. Fan gathering locations on

bridges overlooking the court 3.

Abundant natural light that can be controlled with shading devices

LEED CERTIFICATION To compete wtih current design standards, our goal for thiss project is to achieve LEED Gold CertiďŹ cation. To achieve this distinction, we will:

1. Focus on the Categories of Performance of LEED v4: - Location & Transportation - Sustainable Sites - Water Efficiency - Energy & Atmosphere - Materials & Resources - Indoor Environmental Quality - Innovation - Regional Priority 2. Maximize energy use reduction 3. Analyze the Return on Investment of potential strategies

The Mecho Shade is an automatic sunshade system that blocks natural light during daytime events as needed. It also prevents heat intake from the southern facade and reduces glare.
