Minneapolis, Minnesota is a thriving modern metropolis with deep historical roots. Previously known for its large flour mill district and timber companies, Minneapolis has evolved into a complex and multifaceted city. Throughout the city, many buildings have incorporated historical and local elements within their design. Rich wood and Kasota stone line the interior and exterior facades, and ruins of the old Mill District rest along the Mississippi River. Moving past the historical and traditional, the way that people circulate through the city is anything but. Due to its extreme climate conditions, Minneapolis has a secondary pedestrian system that spans between and through most of downtown. These skyways have their own system that defines ordinary street life.

Advertising Positioning o

Target Center is nestled at the edge of downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota. Its general location is within walking distance to many of the city’s prime amenities such as shopping, public transportation, and social hot spots. Across the highway, Target Center shares a large outdoor plaza with Target Fieldhome of the Minnesota Twins. On either side of the Center are large Ramps that cater to both Target Complexes. These are where the majority of occupants will enter and leave the city. The site itself, is relatively flat; however, its Northern and Eastern sides slope downwards to the edge by more than an entire level. Due to its narrow parameters the new design of the Target Center maximizes its foot print to push the boundaries of the site, thus creating an intimidating front for spectators.

Site

The Twin City Wolf Club Level is designed as another he main premium amenity. The WC is objective of the TCWC to provide a holistic fan an just experience rather than watching the game. The Upper Concourse serves the rest of the general admissions and has a wrapping transparent facade that provides unobstructed views to downtown Minneapolis.

The two Suite Levels are design specifically for premium member use. They hold a variety of amenities including: loge seating, a restaurant, outdoor patios, suites, double-decker suites, and a mezzanine.

Plans

The Intermediate ntermediate Level serves es as the primary entry for Premium Guests. Here they have a separate lobby y away from general admissions. ssions. The other end this his level serves back of house use operations. The South h exterior also houses the NBA BA store front museum as well ell as a small retail shop..

Lastly, the Catwalk Level houses the many rigging systems as well as any corresponding facility and MEP operations. Extra press is also located on this level. The Event Level holds the majority of facility operations and service sectors. It is comprised of four primary sectors including: the Minnesota Timberwolves NBA area, the Performer Area, the Facility Operations Area, and the Visiting teams Area.

The Main Concourse has its main entry on the Southeastern edge of the facility. At this raised elevation it connects with the Skyway system. This is also where the majority of pedestrian traffic will filter from.

Target Center does not conform to the physical boundaries of its site. On the contrary it is these restrictions that define key elements of the building. At the corner facing Target Center a large atrium with Media Mesh not only provides circulation for its patrons, but also advertising opportunities for the Minnesota Twins. The Main Entry corner also has a large atrium space that overlooks the heart of downtown Minneapolis. On the Western side of the building two levels reach out and connect to Ramp A. Providing a secondary point of entry for the many different admission levels.

The skin of the building is comprised of three key materials: Oko Skin, Media Mesh, and Triple Pane Glass. The entire design philosophy behind the skin is using pedestrian movement as the facade. The dynamic properties that drive people respond to their environment is displayed along the exterior of the building through the use of the triple pane glass. The Oko skin is a rain screen that has a variety of colors inspired by the fur of a wolf. At highlighted points of the building the Oko Skin is peeled away to allow for clear visibility through the floors. The Media Mesh acts as the primary source of advertisement. It’s flexibility and lightness allows for easy maneuverability and service.

Twin City Wolf Club & Catwalk

The movement of people to and through a building is an influential aspect to the overall fan experience. There are three entry points around Target Center that cater to the different admissions. The Premium Entry resides on the Southwestern side of the facility. At ground level, it provides ease of access as well as valet drop off for members. From here members are easily circulated through a series of lifts up to the suite and club levels or they flow down into the bunker club. The Main Entry for general admissions in on the Southeastern point of the facility. It is comprised of a promenade of stairs and escalators that lead up into the main concourse, thus giving a more grandiose first impression upon entering the arena. To reach the upper concourse, two curved escalators encased in a glass atrium run between the floors. Lastly, the service entry connects with the loading dock on the Event Level. To maintain privacy between back of house and admissions, specific levels and circulation have been kept separate.

The loading dock is placed at the lowest point of the Target Center site at Event Level. For ease of circulation and manoverability, the dock has its own structural system disconnected from Target Center. The dock specifications allow for two large semi trucks, two food trucks, and room for any T.V. and radio station operations.

The majority of the Mechinaical, Electrical, and Plumbing operations are located on the Event Level, Intermediate Level, and Catwalk Level. This is designed for the ease for service operations as well as noise isolation. Running adjacent to the elevators, in each core, are a series of MEP distribution closets and shafts. These service all other floors occupied by the general population.
