DESIGN NARRATIVE With a strong sense of community and shared pride for their state, Minnesotan culture embodies the warmth and cordial tradition inherent to the Midwest. Providing a community space to celebrate the spirit and victories of the Twin Cities’ teams while reflecting its diverse culture and connection to the people and the land is at the heart of our design for the Minneapolis Arena. While the interior arena spiritually connects the people through shared traditions, the exterior physically connects to the land and urban context through a dynamic façade and streetscape that serve as an invitation to all of downtown Minneapolis. The arena extends this invitation to all of Minnesota by incorporating materials that resemble the local natural landscape reminiscent of summers at the lake house, hiking in the north woods, and family potlucks around the hearth during a winter storm. The Minneapolis Arena embodies the Minnesotan community and their connection to nature, and will thus become a new source of Minnesotan pride.

COMMUNITY Minneapolis, the “City by Nature,” is home to a vibrant and diverse community with a strong sense of local pride. Known for its green lifestyle, Minneapolis sets a high standard for sustainable living and has created a sense of community through that lifestyle. Minneapolis offers a lively theater and entertainment district that reflects the city’s strong emphasis on history, art, and culture. Engaging with this rich culture, the Minneapolis Arena provides a gathering space that will become an iconic place for celebration and Minnesotan identity. Featuring an intimate and low-rising bowl, the spectators will feel a sense of camaraderie while having a great view of the game. The large plaza space framing the main entrance invites the city’s varied population to gather into a setting that unites them under a shared interest. Because of the engaging and welcoming design of the Minneapolis Arena, the Twin Cities community will share a bond of unified appreciation and pride that will surpass generations.

Designed by Jean Nouvel, the 285,000 square foot theater sits along the Mississippi River in downtown Minneapolis. The theater was founded for performance, production, education and professional training of acting. The Guthrie houses three theaters, featuring a thrust stage, proscenium stage, and a black-box studio. Jutting out to the Mississippi River is a 178-foot cantilevered “Endless Bridge,” and on the ninth floor an Amber Room that gives vintage views of downtown.

First Roman Catholic Basilica established in the United States, the Basilica of Saint Mary is one of the many icons of Minneapolis. The Beaux-Arts neoclassical architecture and downtown location make it a popular destination for the religious and non-religious alike. Annually it hosts the Basilica Block Party weekend music festival, which has sold out every year since its start in 1995, as well as the Minnesota Sinfonia for their winter classical concert series.

As the tallest building in the state, the IDS Center has become a Minneapolis icon. At the bottom of the tower sits a shopping and lobby area, known as the Crystal Court. Skyway connections span for four adjacent blocks and the front entrance faces Nicollet Mall, the primary downtown shopping street. This famous front entrance was featured on the opening montage of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” and the IDS Center was designed by Philip Johnson.

This 11 acre park located near the Walker Art Center is the largest urban sculpture garden in the country, housing 40 permanent art installations. The sculpture garden unites green space and Minnesotan cultural life, and has become a top destination. The centerpiece of the garden is the Spoonbridge and Cherry, and the grounds also include the Cowles Conservatory including a glass fish by Frank Gehry.

Made of granite and limestone, the 2100-foot long Stone Arch Bridge is solely for pedestrians and bicyclists. The bridge is the only arched bridge made of stone on the entire Mississippi River, offering great views of the Minneapolis skyline. It was originally built in 1883 for the railroad to increase movement of people and goods across the river.

Minneapolis has been rated one of the top US cities for public transportation. The metro light rail and bus lines have been aggressive in supporting their community’s transportation needs and hold a high safety record. Minneapolis also ranks high on the most bikeable city list, having almost 13,000 people bike to work daily. The skyways have put Minneapolis on the map for holding the world’s largest continuous skyway system, spanning 8 miles and connecting 69 blocks.

Site Plan: Access Points

With the main entrance located at the intersection of First Avenue and Seventh Street, the plaza serves as a place of confluence for the city. Using the Energy Center on site to advertise event, a large LED screen will draw more people to the southern plaza. Behind the Energy Center is the drop off zone for Premium guests. Influenced by the pattern of the screen system wrapping around the building, the paving stones of the plaza break up to draw the pedestrian to ticketing and the main entrance of the arena which opens up to the bowl. During the cold winter days when larger events aren’t being held, the plaza will transform into a winter garden providing an open ice rink and fire pits for those brave enough to weather the Minnesota winter. Being one of the diverse and accepting cities in America, the plaza can change into a celebration space for parades that happen in the city. With a strong farmer’s market presence in Minneapolis, the plaza can serve as a branch of the market to serve city dwellers closer to downtown and east Minneapolis. With high pedestrian activity in the warmer months, the plaza will change into a food truck stop for office workers to take a break and enjoy good company

CONNECTIVITY With its urban context and rural materials, the Minneapolis Arena bridges the connection of the diverse Minnesotan lifestyles. The arena invites festivities across downtown into the theater and warehouse districts and creates links to Target Field and 1st Avenue. The Minneapolis Arena invites the city in by lifting up its faรงade at the entrances, similar to the movement of a wolves den. The primary and secondary entrances give a view into openings of the bowl to create a link between the city and the game. Likewise, when seated inside the bowl, views of downtown can be seen back through the entrances. This unity between the urban and rural environment is incorporated into the Minnesotan lifestyle as well as the Minneapolis Arena. The arena creates a connection between a diverse community, between the game and the city, and between the built environment and nature.

NATURE A large source of pride and passion for Minnesotans is their nature. The state of 10,000 lakes boasts more shoreline than California, Florida, and Hawaii combined, and the majority of the northern Iron Range is covered in National Forests, containing 58 state forests. Minnesotans are active in respecting and preserving their nature, and have been aggressive with using renewable resources, recycling, and minimizing waste. The Minneapolis Arena will embody these values of nature by displaying materials that resemble wood, water, ice, and stone. The arena plans to actively participate in furthering respect for nature by collecting recyclables, promoting alternative forms of transportation, repurposing collected rain water, using low emitting and recycled materials, and emphasizing daylighting for thermal comfort and views.

The general design is a glass box that maximizes the extents of the tight site. Wrapping around the glass box is a wooden slat skin that creates the overall feeling of movement and dynamics. The wooden skin lifts up in peaks to pronounce the entrances and dips back down to the street level to relate to the pedestrian. To further the dynamic wrapping system, the skin splits in two areas to create outdoor patios. This movement of the skin system is a reflection of the lively community and exciting events within the arena. Minneapolis Arena 54

Form Diagram

The Skin was developed to be manufactured on panels. Within the panels the structure was divided into X’s that would be braced hollow tubes. The large panels of X’s were then subdivided into a secondary structure system made of up triangles, and then a tertiary structure system that correlated to smaller triangles.

Chosen for its durability and ability to be harvested in the state, Ipe wood is used for the arenas screening system. With the constructability of the screen, individual panel can be taken down for repairs or replacement. Moreover, the weathering of the screen will provide depth and character to the arena as it ages and develops along with the city. Using locally reclaimed wood for interior finishes further ties the arena back to its location. With companies such as a Minnesota Barnwood, material finishes inside many areas of the stadium will provide economic growth to the state and local businesses while maintaining a low environmental footprint.

One of many natural resources in Minnesota, limestone for the Minneapolis arena will be quarried from the southern region of the state. This reduction on travel distance and use of local materials increases the sustainability of the arena and the economic growth of the state. The pattern of the stone once installed will be in reference to the context of the warehouse district Another natural resource found in Minnesota, Gabbro stone will be used in the paving in the plaza spaces which blends into the arena, inviting the exterior inside. When it rains, the stone becomes a reflective surface harkening back to the lakes of Minnesota.
