Morning SAVIOUR
Omelet, Pancakes with maple syrup, scrambled eggs with bacon, a waffle, sausages with onion, toasts with peanut butter and jelly and a large cup of coffee with milk. Everything fat free obviously! Americans might have a really hard time to find those things in the morning in our city. Among all the food attractions Cracow has to offer to guests, breakfast probably struggles the most. Basically, we have never been proud of our breakfast places in the city center which is, let’s just say, weird.
PIC: Anna Bajor
There is only one thing that might save you. It is usually available 24/7 especially in the Main Market area. Its name is “obwarzanek” which you may call Pretzel as well. Thick, round, bread-kind of crust covered with salt, sesame or poppy seeds which costs about 1,5 PLN. Many night sailors of life lose their partying mood in the morning after. Fortunately “obwarzanek” comes to the rescue to those who are on the verge of hangover starvation.
REKLAMA
Night food. Totally different story. You won’t find any difficulties in finding delicious street food around the corner. Just check our list of famous Polish meals, which you were able to find in previous issue of Cheers Cracow. Unfortunately they are mostly late night meals like Zapiekanka or Kielbaski. Now, let’s get back to our breakfast. Soon after you wake up, with almost an invincible hangover and when two days of partying only remain in your memory, you should prepare yourself to suffer long hours before you eat anything proper. Between 7 and 10 AM Cracow seems to be almost a breakfast desert. You can literary starve to death with one single exception…

The only bad thing about it, is that right after having an “obwarzanek” you will immediately seek for a glass of beer to extinguish that salty thirst and the whole story starts over. Someone once said that Poland is like one big “obwarzanek” – all the best is placed on its edges. You will get the clue just after you have one. Cracow is definitely located on the edge. Few words from Editor As academic year starts with our new issue we won’t try to set you in melancholic mode. 6th Cracow Jazz Fall starts this season and Cheers Cracow is glad to invite you in on page 44. This festival is famous for combining classical jazz with other genres. So make sure you will visit our calendar for October and get some more details about this event! Don’t have enough of modern art? Check out the article about MOCAK exposition. Although the hot weather is over and evenings are a little bit colder you shouldn’t give up on the walks. If you don’t want to stroll in a crowd you can also visit some quiet and green places such as a garden that belonged to Józef Mehoffer. Not only is it calm and beautiful but also has a historical value. If you want to visit the hidden island of a green area in the centre of Cracow read the: Meet the history section. Cracow is a royal city. Making our way by this trail we assume that the Main Market has to be full of historical traditions. So is the Royal Passage- the route by which kings aimed the Wawel Hill. Old City, Barbakan and many monumental tenement houses will be on your way. But if you are interested in less known details and have a will for longer stroll read article on the page 48.

REVOLUTION
of the twenty- something YEAR OLD
Typical foreigners consider Poles to be SAD, deeply RELIGIOUS, probably XENOPHOBIC and definitely VODKA-ADDICTED. Who is a young Cracow dweller in reality? You would be surprised BY THE TRUTH. POLAND became a part of the WORLD OF POP-CULTURE quite a while ago. We have already DANCED WITH THE STARS, chosen our own TOP MODEL and immediately fell for the meanest doctor ever named HOUSE. We witnessed a couple of coming out incidents and SEX ACTS in reality shows. VOLKSWAGEN and OPEL took place of POLONEZ AND FIAT 126P, street look is dominated by H&M and ZARA. Over the last twenty years not only has the scenery changed. SO HAVE WE.

STEREOTYPE 1:
Polish necessarily means Catholic
Entering the city, have in mind that Cracow is still one of the most conservative cities in Poland. However, it doesn’t mean that premarital sex, one night stands or an abortion doesn’t go on behind the walls. More and more students define themselves, either as non-practicing believers or agnostics. We are trying to adjust religion to the new reality standards. Many couples such as Michał and Agata, decide to move in before “happily ever after” officially comes.
- Our parents didn’t have such a chance. Luckily, we do. So, instead of jumping into marriage, we want to spend some time together and figure out if it’s working –
Agata explains. As a generation we broke many taboos. One of them is homosexualism. Nevertheless, some extreme Rightist circles still resist giving gay communities basic rights. It seems, that in this case we need more time to catch up with the rest of Europe.
STEREOTYPE 2:
Vodka streams down here
Please note, vodka is no longer a dominant drink among young people. Today more of us choose either wine or excellent local beers such as Okocim, Lech or Żywiec. We like to have fun and celebrate important occasions with alcohol. Ania, who has just graduated from German Philology, spent the following evening with her friends on one Cracow’s boat bars.
- Are we really that different? British, French or Dutch students do the same. But as opposed to some of them, we are probably more aware of our limits – Ania points out.

T he nation of plumbers and housekeepers STEREOTYPE 3:
It’s true that there are many Polish handy and skilful builders, mechanics and welders abroad, who emigrate to make a living. Although, it’s necessary to see the whole picture. According to researches, Polish youngsters are one of the best educated in EU. Twenty-something year old generation has a precise plan for life. One faculty is no longer enough, so they study two or more at once. Darek, a student from Cracow, did his masters degree in political science then continued his education at the public administration department. By now, his CV looks quite impressive. Own portal, interviews with a bunch of people from polish establishment, movies for television are just a small part of his achievements. Currently, Darek works as a cameraman and shoots films for one of the advertising agencies in Cracow. People from local industries know perfectly well, that when he comes along, magic is bound to happen on the screen. But his thoughts and hopes will always take him further, towards real journalism.
- It’s all about the power that every reporter carries in his hands: not only to show reality but to try to make it a bit better – he explains.
Next target? He has just established a movie production project in partnership with friends. Darek is just 24. As most of his colleagues, he is fiercely ambitious.
STEREOTYPE 4:
A Pole is a sad face
The Polish temper is not exactly what you could consider as optimistic. However, after what we went through as a nation, you have to be more understanding. While the generation of our fathers complains a lot, it seems that young Poles are finally less afraid of taking risks and make the most of current opportunities. That is why Aga never unpacks her luggage. Typical soul of a globetrotter, who finds moments of happiness only after changing scenery. She studies International Business at the University of Economics in Cracow. Maybe that is why she knows perfectly how to travel on a thin budget. If necessary, she will take a job. Her strangest experience? Once, she was earning for a living as a fortune-teller’s translator. – she adds with a smile. As majority of the young generation, Aga speaks fluent English. She also got a bachelor degree in Spanish language so she easily beat the competition and spent the last couple of months doing an internship in Barcelona. Enthusiastic, warm and funny. Of course, life doesn’t always go easy on her. As she emphasizes, being naively open to people, turns against you quite often. Aga is currently applying for a job abroad with AIESEC. she requests nicely.
At least now I know for sure, they lie through their teeth
On days like that, I've got nothing to do but smile.
This time Philippines or Malaysia, so keep your fingers crossed!-

SUSHI HISTORY
Most of sushi varieties in the form and shape, which we know currently, aren’t older than 200 years, but their originals can boast of 25 centuries history. The methods of preserving of fishes in salt and rice were known in the north of China and in south-east of Asia at least since 5 century B.C. and what most explorers suppose they came to Japan form these regions along with ability of rice cultivation. Those methods based on salting of gutted fishes and filling with boiled rice, which stimulated creating of lactic acid the main preservative. The fermentation lasted between 2 and 12 months. Sushi prepared this way known as nare zushi or funa zushi are served until today in special old-fashioned restaurants. In the 15th and 16th century Japanese adapted a new method of accelerated fermentation called nama nare or han nare zushi which is well known until today in some regions of Japan. Around a half 17th century a doctor living in Edo(old name of Tokyo) named Matsumoto Yoschiichi has it upon an idea to pickle the rice with rice vinegar, what shortened the time of ripening of sushi for consumption much more. The pickling in vinegar became established out of necessity in cities and regions far away from the seacoast, where before development of fast transport
16
and cooling techniques the consumption of fresh fishes and seafood was a luxury. And in this way battera a type of sushi from rice pressed with slices of mackerel, pickled at the beginning in salt, and later in slightly sweeten rice vinegar is connected with former capital Kyoto and Osaka. A breakthrough took place in Edo at turn of 18th and 19th century. The citizens of Edo were famous for impatience and hurry and those features left a stamp on local sushi called Edomae. The innovation in his type of sushi, rather known as nigiri, was combination of raw, not fermented fish with rice, which was prepared separately. The time of preparing nigiri was incomparable shorter than the before sushi types. It was discover soon that, nigiri tied with slice of algae nori is more durable and doesn’t show tendency, that fish is getting separated from rice ball during moving from tray to the mouth and soaking in the soya sauce. The bigger nori sheets could use for wrapping also be used or for wrapping of rice along with fish, stuffing in order to form thick or thin rolls (hoso-, ura- and futomaki), scones (temaki), boats (gunkan maki) or other shapes. TIPS beware of the
BARTENDER
BARTENDER, BARFLIES BEST FRIEND. KEEPER OF DARK SECRETS, ALWAYS THERE WHEN YOU NEED HIM. THAT’S THE STEREOTYPE, BUT THE TRUTH IS, MANY OF THEM ARE NOTHING LESS THAN THIEVES TRYING TO SCAM YOU ON DRINKS. IT’S HARD TO NOTICE WHEN WE ARE BEING RIPPED OFF AT A BAR, BUT KNOWLEDGE OF BARTENDING SCAMS IS HALF OF THE BATTLE.
HERE F OME O ARE S PU O P OST THE M DING ARTEN T LAR B MIGH S YOU : O SCAM T ICTIM FALL V
1. BEER!
The most common drink in pubs all around the world is also the most common tool of bartending frauds. Your beer might be nothing more but mixed leftovers with just a drop of fresh beverage. Another well know practice is putting fresh beer head, with a spoon, onto an old one or adding water into the glass before it’s filled with beer.
PHOTO: photoXpress
18
2. EXPENSIVE DRINK, CHEAP ALCOHOL. Why do people buy expensive drinks? Some, because they actually feel the unique taste of an expensive beverage, most do it just for the show. Bartenders know that all too well, and do not hesitate to fill bottles of expensive wine or whisky with some cheap substitute, most of the clients won’t feel any difference.
3. SAME DRINK, EXTRA CHARGE. Foreigners are an easy target for bartending scam. Some bars often have two different menu cards. One with higher prices is often served to tourists. It’s common among dishonest bartenders to tell the same price but in a different currency. For example, instead of 5 PLN (“Polish zloty”) you will be charged 5 EUR. The difference is huge.
4. (UN)OBVIOUS CUSTOMS. Forcing tips is an easy way for a barkeep to earn an extra penny, and there are many ways to do that. Suggesting that demanding change is considered a faux pas is usually enough but the list goes on: charging extra for ice, lemon or a glass of water for your espresso. Some bartenders even charge extra for an ashtray or they put a toilet fee for customers. Such “services” won’t harm our budget but after a busy day it will sure leave quite a sum in a barkeeps wallet.
5. JUICY TRICKS.
Obviously, the easiest target for any bartending scam are people that had a “few too many”. Barkeeps can make you pay for the same drink a few times, saying that you haven’t paid yet. They serve you a shot of water instead of vodka or persuade you to drink more. Being juiced leaves you vulnerable to all kinds of bartending scams.

EVERY YEAR A FLOW OF NEW STUDENTS COMES TO THE CITY TO TASTE THE UNIQUE ATMOSPHERE OF CRACOW, THE CULTURAL CAPITAL OF POLAND. WHAT IS THEIR EXPERIENCE? WHAT DO THEY THINK ABOUT LOCAL PEOPLE? BEST SIGHTS, PUBS, AND RESTAURANTS? WE INTERVIEWED SOME OF THEM. CHECK OUT THEIR ANSWERS! TETIANA FROM ODESSA IN UKRAINE, Over the last couple of months, Cracow has become my second A STUDENT OF ACCOUNTING ECONOMICS home. The secret of the magic atmosphere must be hidden in the fact that the city combines ancient and modern architecture. To fully appreciate its real beauty, you should definitely go all the way to Kościuszko Mound (Kopiec Kościuszki). All of those, who decide to climb to its top, will be rewarded with a fantastic panorama of Cracow. The night view is just breathtaking! My way to clear thoughts? Walking along the banks of Wisła River or getting lost in those tiny streets of the Old Town. If you haven’t visited the underground market square yet, please, go right ahead and place The Historical Museum on your must-see list! People in Poland and Moldova are pretty much alike. Both Slavian and the Balkan inhabitants are Poland vs. Mexico… uff where to begin? very hospitable and their nations are very friendly. The weather, architecture, people... In Latin When it comes to pointing the differences, social America we are definitely more open to each life would be one of them. Cracow, definitely has a other, but even though, I like to interact with wider variety of cultural events and chill-out spots. However, Europeans as it’s a totally new experience for please don’t forget that we have better wine! If you are new a Mexican soul. Plus the food. That’s probably in the city, look for the Warsztat café or as it’s called “a hostel for the thing I miss the most being away from instruments” located on Izaaka Street. Since you will already be my mother country. I am starting to accept in the Kazimierz neighbourhood, catch a passer-by and ask him Polish meals, but I won’t change my mind nicely about Zapiekanka. Try it! At the end, go straight Mexican food is the best! ahead to the Botanical Garden or just enjoy your lazy afternoon in Mleczarnia bar on the next street.

Surprisingly, our countries have much more in common than anybody could expect judging by the distance. Starting from similar prices of goods and finishing with beautiful girls on every corner. All of that felt like home to me from the very beginning. However, the city where I live doesn’t have such a rich historical background, which makes Cracow even more exceptional. My recommendations for the evening? First, explore all restaurants, little pubs and bars that Rynek Główny has to offer. After a couple of months, when you are finally done, do the same with the Jewish district. You will never get bored, there is always something new to see or taste!

INTERNATIONAL COLLECTION OF WORKS BY CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS, NEARLY TEN THOUSAND SQUARE METERS OF EXHIBITION SPACE AND A XXI CENTURY LIBRARY. THE MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART IN CRACOW INVITES YOU TO EXPLORE. Open since May 2011, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Cracow (MOCAK), located by 4 Lipowa Street, presents the collection of works by Polish and foreign artists, created in the past twenty years. It is the first institution of this kind in Poland. The museum was built on the former grounds of Oscar Schindler’s factory- one new building has been raised and six existing ones have been adapted to the museums standards. The architectural design is by Claudio Nardi, an Italian neo modernistic architect and interior designer. The first exhibitions already await visitors, for example the “MOCAK collection”, “History in Art” (until October

16th). One of their main goals is to show the cyclic image of history, the distortion and inaccuracies found in the documentation of historical events. Another exhibition “Between Sculpture and Fashion” (available until October 30th), is an individual exhibition by Halina Mrożek, a graduate of Cracow’s Academy of Fine Arts. The artist’s works reveal her spectrum of interests, oscillating on the border of sculpture and fashion. In her projects, she sketches different psychological profiles of the human being, using her experience connected with sculpture. In the museum bookstore, you can find the most interesting publi-

WIELICZKA SALT MINE
Imagine 2.5 km long corridors going towards the underground world. Think of chambers and chapels curved in salt, ancient lakes and traces of mining works. Visiting Wieliczka Salt Mine is your key all the way back to the thirteenth century. You simply cannot miss the opportunity to see this UNESCO World Heritage Site, especially because it is situated just 10 km from Cracow. The best way to get to Wieliczka is by a mini-bus. It is easy to catch them either on the corner next to the main post office (Poczta Glówna) or Pawia Street (next to Galeria Krakowska) where they departure. The fare is 2.50 PLN one way (less than 1 euro) and the journey should take about 30 min. Prepare yourself for paying a rather expensive fee to enter the mine - about 60 PLN (16 euro). This price includes a guided tour in foreign language. Just don’t forget your sweater! The temperature in the Salt Mine is 14'C (55'F). If you prefer hassle-free coach tours, there are many private companies running businesses in this field. You will find some offers below.

and jumpin’ bus! ZAKOPANE
Take a deep breath, we are going up! The second proposal on our list is Zakopane, Poland’s most popular mountain resort. Hikers of all ages are welcome to visit this picturesque town to get to know the unique culture of Polish highlands. Once you get there, find a spectacular cable car which takes tourists up to the summit of Kasprowy Wierch. For those who can stay in Zakopane a little bit longer, our recommendation is to take a horse drawn carriage up to Morskie Oko, an amazing mountain lake in the heart of the Tatry range. The easiest way to reach the city is by a private bus. Two companies provide service on the Cracow-Zakopane route, which are Szwagropol and Maxbus, both departure from Cracow’s main bus station. Tickets cost about 18 PLN (4.5 euro) one way, and the journey takes approximately 2 hours. Even though it’s a relatively long trip, believe me – it’s definitely worth it!

Ready for more attractions? The next stop will be a Jurassic landscape of the Ojców National Park. During this trip you are going to see an unusual rock called the “Club of Hercules”, enter the Renaissance Castle in Pieskowa Skała and the cave, where the remains of Neanderthal men were found. You can get to Ojców by taking the frequent mini-bus towards Skała from Nowy Kleparz bus stop (leaves every 10 min on weekdays and every half hour during the weekends). Once you reach the place, you can take the opportunity to join one of the Walking and Bicycle Tours or horse carriage rides along the Prądnik Valley. AUSCHWITZ
When in Cracow you must not forget about Auschwitz-Birkenau Former Nazi German Death Camp in the vicinity. According to the horrible estimation during the Second World War, 1.1 million people were executed there. 90 percent of the whole number constituted Jews. Although this visit won’t be an easy one, it should be an obligatory lesson about the worst barbarity of the 20th century for everyone. The camp is located about 65 km from Cracow in the city Oświęcim and the journey lasts about 1.5 hour. To get there, take one of the buses from the city’s main bus station (you will find the schedule on the website: www.visitauschwitz. eu). A return ticket costs 22 PLN (about 5 euro). Entrance to the Auschwitz-Birkenau museum is free of charge unless you want to visit the museum with a guide which costs about 40 PLN (about 10 euro). It is open from 8am till 7pm, Monday to Friday.

Rdza is the kick up the back side that Krakow's nightlife needs! A serious music venue in an excellent space, with plenty of great seating, Rdza has quickly established itself as a dominant player on the club circuit. With its ambitious programme of bringing the best international DJing talent to Krakow it has raised the bar in the old town, and created a unique new venue that attracts a diverse and funky, party crowd.

Looking for palatable décor with excellent music menu? Baccarat would be the adequate location to check out on your late night adventure. That is probably the most stylish and glamorous club in the whole city, which makes you feel immediately like at the Moulin Rouge film set. The entire labyrinthine basement is decked in the funky art work. Drop by for exquisite cocktail and hit the floor while DJs spin house, latino, and disco beats. Just remember to wear the most fabulous outfit from your wardrobe!

You are not a regular David Guetta fan? A bit allergic to pretentious style of disco clubs? Don’t worry, there is something for you out there as well. JazzRock café is a dream place for all Deep Purple and Black Sabbath groupies. Divided into two - jazz and rock – parts, during years has become an icon among Cracow locals. Don’t miss this unique venue on your road!
JAZZROCK CAFÉ, 12 SŁAWKOWSKA STREET
The heart of Kazimierz area hides another must-be place within. Taawa means in Yiddish desire and you can expect nothing less than the disco passion from it. As a queen among modern discotheques, this place dazzles with its illuminated glass tables and purple leather furnishings. Clubbing vibes are turned by starts like Shapeshifters, Sonique, Boogie Pimps or Stonebridge.
When it comes to a strong start, you should probably direct your steps straight towards Frantic. After crossing its doorstep, you will find a bunch of beautiful girls, four bars and two dancefloors in one place. The first room belongs to house & r’n’b music while the second space is ruled by the hiphop style. Without a survey you can tell, this is one of the most favorite clubs destination among foreigners. Place is usually ram-packed from Thursday to Saturday.

JAZZ FALL
Despite many difficulties, we managed to organize the sixth edition of Cracow’s Jazz Fall Festival, which promises to be impressive this year. This is the only jazz festival in Poland, which focuses exclusively on improvised contemporary music and free jazz. The main aim of this festival, from the very beginning was to promote this music genre. And it all started with the Vandermark 5 performances at Cracow’s Alchemia. The popularity of these performances led to cooperation between the club owners and Marek Winiarski, head of Not Two Records, record publishing company. During five editions, this event gathered the greatest world-class stars of improvised music. Over 150 musicians participated, among them legendary Anthony Braxton, Joe McPhee, Charles Gayle, and Peter Brötzmann.

CLASSIC doesn’ t have to mean boring MODERN STAG PARTIES BECAME EXHAUSTING MENTALLY AS WELL AS PHYSICALLY. PEOPLE GO WATER RAFTING OR CANOEING, BUNGEE JUMPING, PAINTBALLING AND DO OTHER CRAZY STUFF INVOLVING FUTURE GROOM IN A SERIES OF UNPREDICTABLE EVENTS WHICH DOESN’T NECESSARY HAVE TO BE FUN. THAT AIN’T GONNA HELP HIM MATES! YOUR BEST DUDE NEEDS TO RELAX BEFORE HE FINALLY SAYS “I DO” AND START A NEW LIFESTYLE. GIVE HIM A LITTLE BREAK FROM THIS TERRIBLE WEDDING RUSH AND GO CLASSY.
Lets face it. Maybe 5 percent of stags end up like we have seen in “Hangover”, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do anything as exciting. Adrenaline is a perfect companion on this occasion, but there are different ways to reach the throb in your veins. Crazy mornings and classy evenings, how does it sound to you? If you want to go cheap and have as much fun as you could dream about, plan your stag very carefully. The best idea is to go abroad using cheap flights. This is why Cracow has always been on the top of the list of stag parties destinations. No wonder! Beautiful scenery, beautiful women, easy communication with cheap flights companies and a lot of things to do. You can spend more than three days doing all the crazy stuff mentioned before outside town (if you have to) and chill out in the finest gentleman’s clubs in the evenings. Every activity you have planned to take during the stag may be either cool or a total waste of time, but there is always one thing you will never get bored with - GIRLS. Fellas lets be honest, this is what stag is all about. Last adventure of groom-to-be with his best friends, outside the town he lives in, without the surveillance of wives, girlfriends and god knows who else. Last time before he goes on a business trip… You can always go random and try to hook-up in the club, but there is no guarantee of successful evening.
46
Successful means what all the men should know so far. So there is a second option more, convenient to set up, a night in gentleman’s club. Perfect way to start or end the stag party. First, take a cab and hit one of gentleman’s club in town, GOLD CLUB Go Go on Księcia Józefa Street for example, is the oldest in Cracow, opened every day from 8 PM to 4 AM. Hello everyone! This is our second meeting, but I truly hope it won’t be the last one. As last month I will try to encourage you to take a 2 hour-long walk or a short ride on a bicycle with me. The places which we are going to visit you can find only in Cracow. The beautiful and old city, former capital of Poland, which some of you have probably already visited in the past. But even if, probably most of the time you were moving by train, bus (rather than car) or by bike. Of course we don’t have anything against bikes but from now on we will be walking on our own legs. Simply, just to see more of Cracow’s finest. Oh, and my name is Kasia by the way…

This month I decided not to torment you (this is our first time all in all) so we are going for a walk around the Wawel Hill.
2
Starting on Grodzka Street, which was part of the Royal Passage, leading to Wawel. Let’s move slowly in that direction.
My favorite place on this street is located just on our right side (when walking from Main Market to Wawel). Under the number 13 there is a great ice-cream parlor with delicious deserts. We can step by and have a short break especially if we don’t want to spend too much money. The prices are accessible and service is very friendly. It’s a fantastic place for a birthday party in a small group. Menu contains all sorts of beer: pasteurized and nonpasteurized, dark and light. All from Polish regions which specialize in brewery..

But not too long, let’s go back on our track! It takes only few minutes to see the building with number 22 (still Grodzka Street, but this time on left side) where in 1840 one of the most famous actresses was born - Helena Modrzejewska. We can see a commemorating plate hanging on one of its walls. The tenement house stands on the corner of Grodzka and a beautiful square called Plac Wszystkich Świętych (Square of All Saints).

Walking further we pass the building on 39 Grodzka Street, the place where Wit Stwosz (author of famous altar in Mariacki Church) was living. Further on, on our left we see Institute of Filosofy, Religion, Botanic and Sociology called Collegium Broscianum. All of them belong to Jagiellonian Universitry.
Next to it, there is a masterpiece of baroque architecture – Św. Piotra i Pawła Church. In front of it we can sit for a minute under the tree and enjoy the view. Together with us the statue of Piotr Skarga (situated on a square opposite to the main gate of the church) which stands on our back side.

On Grodzka Street there is also one of the best milk bars in Cracow (especially for students). But the best thing to observe in the streets around the old market are the buildings. Some of them really old and some, 9 unfortunately still not renovated (but with the special local atmosphere), are standing next to those which were briefly renovated, and painted with different colors. It’s very easy to distinguish which is which, however that contrast has it’s own value to the city.

First part of our trip ends under the mound with a the castle on top of it. But Exploration of Wawel we put aside on different occasion. Now we take the Bernardyńska Street and go straight ahead to Czerwieński Embankment. Watch out for the dragon! He belches the fire. Going near the river Wisła (around the castle), it takes about 10-15 minutes to go back to Podzamcze Street. In summer sitting by the river is very pleasurable, especially when you don’t like to spend time indoors. The same thing is about Planty Gardens which encircle the market. This is why we are passing them through on our way back to the place where we’ve started. I have chosen Straszewskiego Street instead of turning back quickly by Poselska Street. Thanks to that we will have an opportunity to see Franciszkańska St. and of course Bracka St. In various times of the year fans of photography can have a lot of fun in here..
52
It’s because photography exhibitions are being held 12 in the Planty Gardens all the way from Poselska St. to the Frańciszkańska St. Right after visiting exhibition we move on and turn right. We pass Metropoli13 tan Curia (yellow building on our left hand) with the famous window dedicated to the pope John Paul II and we turn left to Bracka St. In my opinion this perspective on Town Hall and Sukiennice from Bracka Street, is the most interesting. Bracka is definitely more quiet comparing to Grodzka. Places you can seat are adequate to this statement. We have “Botanica”- elegant and original place. In the depth of one of the tenement is a cafe bar “Spokój” (Tranquility), where you can feel comfortable lying on one of many couches, drinking delicious hot chocolate.
12
We’re going to end up here, but I hope I will see you again next month. Don’t forget your cameras! Kasia Zieleźny

Having snack attack in the middle of your sleep? No problem for Cracow’s citizen (or a visitor). There is plenty of places you can eat after midnight including Kebab places and Zapiekanki. But there is probably nothing more famous in this city than Kiełbaski.
ski Kiełba rite ou v is my fa ack. I can n s ht midnig count on s y e a lw a hey ar guys, t e. e thes r he always
Whose idea was to open today’s legendary Kiełbaski? Actually, we made it up together. Before that we used to work on a cab, came across an idea and it worked out. That was back in 1991 and it’s still running up to this day.
see now, this is how it works. We do our best and people appreciate it. This is why we’ve been here for last twenty years.
How the idea was born? Well as I said before it was in 1991, already 20 years to be more precise [my interlocutor finishes with gentle sigh]
[burst of laughter] Multiple varieties. Actors, journalists, cab drivers, emergency services, police officers, politicians, regular people, poor people.
What was the source of inspiration? Was it the communist years? No, not at all. It just popped out from our heads [second seller explains with a proud smile] All in all you come here in blue Nyska (a communist times car model) and sell your goodies in white smocks?! That doesn’t have anything to do with it. We just started the whole thing the way it is and we continue the same way. Our idea was good enough and it caught on. What made you so successful? Was it the idea, the location or maybe something else? It’s probably the method and good quality – these are the basics. We are always here except Sundays and holidays so the customers may show up anytime they want between 20 PM and 3 AM. We serve only fresh and tasty sausages – according to our customers. You
Who are your customers? Do you often meet, lets say, extraordinary people?
How many international customers come to try your famous kiełbaski? Masses, literary masses. Foreigners visits are very common. Now tell me the secret. Why are they (kiełbaski – sausages) so good? Quality of meat, that’s what matters the most. We don’t run McDonald’s over here, so we use natural wood instead of electric grills. We usually use fruit kind of wood which smells delightfully and brings a little bit of flavor. It has to be fresh and dry not to smoke our sausages too much. You Where do you operate? can’t say you’ve Everyday except holidays in front of been to Cracow when you didn’t try Hala Targowa on Grzegórzecka kiełbaski. Street. You will recognize us thanks to our blue Nyska (communist times SUV).

What is the history of this place, your pub? I don’t know the history of this building and my history is that we relocated from the UK last year because I’m Scottish and my fiancée is Polish. We didn’t want just another polish or Irish bar, we wanted something different so we chose to open a scottish-polish pub. We chose Cheers not because of the television programme but because Cheers is a word that’s used all over the world, meaning cheers – goodbye or cheers when you’re having a drink – na zdrowie. And you’ve changed the location from Pijarska Street this year, why? Yes, it’s because the location was wrong, there were no people and you cannot run a pub without customers. So our agent searched really hard for us, finding a perfect location and she came up with this one - Grodzka 31. We saw it, fell in love with it and relocated here, because it’s a busy street and it seems to be a good place to gain more customers. You have two puppies here. Yes. We want this place to be a dog friendly pub, so you can come in with your dogs, relax, get a beer and you will get some water for your dog.

We usually open from midday in the summer and 3 pm from October and I have two rules for closing, it’s when you stop drinking or spending :) What can you offer to your customers, what are the events, how does the life of Cheers flow? We have Sky Sports on every single day, football is normally on Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday. Of course it’s the choice of customers, so you can have tennis or rugby on, or whatever your choice of sport. If it’s on Sky TV, we can show it. What about bands? Who are your guests? We work with great artists such as Liam MacMhurri, or Neal Hughes, who played here when he was on his tour in Europe. Also Danny with the Gravity, Simeon Lenoir and the Old Chopper, The Pixels and many more. What can you do for the British, Scottish, Irish and other foreigners who come here to work ? I have started an expats club here on a Tuesday evening at 8 pm so the expats can meet new people, get information about the best health insurance, medical help, driving school, which is the best school in the area, how to get their business started. Polish people can talk with the foreigners and help each other, make friends, gain the information.

Does music calm you down or does it prompt you to act? That depends on what kind of music of course, but I guess it usually turns me on. Music has always been my great passion, although I have never had an opportunity to learn how to play any kind of instrument… I am asking, because I know that in private you compose your own music. Composing is too much to say. I’d rather say I am having a good time, as an amateur DJ, playing electronic music with my friends at home parties. It brings me satisfaction and relaxes me at the same time. But like I said before, I usually use music to give myself a positive kick. You may call it your own refuge from everyday life. Yes, definitely a refuge from work or home duties.
Recently, you have been engaged to promote your own city – Cracow. Do you treat it more like a duty or as a privilege? It is a huge distinction for me, for sure. I have always emphasized that I was born in Cracow and this is my beloved city. Numerous times people asked me what is my place and the answer was always the same and obvious. Since last year, when this cooperation with the city’s authorities began, I can talk about this devotion more officially. My duty became convergent with what I actually feel, but from the very beginning I treat it more as a privilege. Agnieszka Radwańska was also engaged in promoting Cracow. You may seek for analogy in development of both careers, however in Agnieszka’s case the major factor was probably her father’s determination. He was the one to motivate her to work harder and become a professional. How was
it in your case? It was completely different. At first my father didn’t want to give his consent to let me drive a sport kart. I spent long hours convincing my dad to let me go to practice. It definitely wasn’t a stereotypical situation when a frustrated father wants his son to realize his unfulfilled ambitions or expectations. He never forced me to drive, moreover he even tried to dis-
59
suade me from doing it. But he became very supportive ever since I have finally convinced him and it lasts till today. I might even say that it evolved into partnership. Lately you came up with an idea to run a school of perfection driving. How does it work? Amateur drivers are trained by more skilled professionals including myself. This is the first time in our city when you can come to a training facility with your own car and improve your driving skills. When the course is done every participant has a better knowledge of safe driving and gets a certificate.
60
Your father, besides his racing records, is a well-known businessman in the gastronomy branch. You became recognizable in sports as well. Do you want the Kościuszko brand to be famous for its financing success, sports, good food, or just maybe its being related to Cracow? First I want people to think “he is a great guy” when they hear my name [laugh]. Nobody is able to predict how it is going to look like in the future. Right now what I’m doing is strictly related to sports. I wish my name was associated with sports success which is pretty obvious. As every professional sportsman, I want to win and I pursue to be the best I can be and hopefully become a champion in the future. On the other hand, we all know that a sports career ends one day. Then, I will try my best in business or management and I hope I will be perceived as a competent manager. But I guess there is no need to look ahead that far…
seems to have this specific charm and atmosphere or even magic I would say. It simply can’t be compared to any other. Which places in Cracow would you recommend to our readers to visit in our beloved city? As a sportsman and as an enthusiast of an active way of spending free time I would recommend to hang out in Wolski Woods. Riding a bike on Vistula’s embankment is another great option as well. You can always have a very nice walk to the top of Piłsudski’s or Kościuszko’s Mound from which you can admire a beautiful panorama of Cracow.
Let’s go back to racing then. How would you define a good result this year? I count on being in the top three at the end of the season. Unfortunately, the first round of PWRC, rally in Portugal didn’t end up as I wanted. Everything went just as I planned until the third race. I had a very safe second position and still a chance to win it all, but the transmission broke down and I lost more than twenty minutes. I dropped down to seventeenth place and had to focus on fighting back. This is why I ended up as seventh. That gave me only six points instead of twenty five or at least eighteen for the second place. It complicated my situation a bit. What is a minimum plan then? Minimum would be to finish as third, after Patrik Flodin and Anders Grondal who haven’t been awarded with points in the first two rounds. Which countries have you already visited or are you going to visit this season? Let me think. That will be: Argentina, which I mentioned before, and Finland right after that. Australia will be next and it is going to be my first time in that exotic rally. Then Spain and finally Great Britain as the last. That’s my schedule for this season. You travel a lot because of your profession. However, like you said before, you can’t imagine to live anywhere else besides Cracow right? Yes, I have so many positive emotions when I think about Cracow that I really can’t think of any other place to live in besides my city. I had many opportunities to see different places all around the world, but Cracow

Its attractiveness is reverberated on the painting entitled Weird garden. Today it is hidden behind high walls in the centre of Cracow.

The garden that belonged to famous Polish painter - Józef Mehoffer is located on 26 Krupnicza Street. He bought the possession with the garden in 1932. Not only did he take care of the house, but also designed the garden by himself. What he wanted to achieve was to make access to the garden from the house more comfortable. The entrance to it led exactly from the sitting room. The mansion was opened in 1996 as part of Cracow’s National Museum. The garden was rusty and uncared. It was reconstructed before the whole possession (the house and the garden) was opened for tourists in May 2004. The layout and types of plants were recreated. Today we can find different species of roses, lilies and a monumental oak. The intension was to make the garden’s outlook as close to original as possible. The piece of art depicts cheerful people during a stroll in the garden. In the foreground there is a little boy holding long and colorful flowers in his hand. He constitutes the embodiment of youth and innocence, whereas flowers symbolize the fragility of aforementioned values. Behind the child, in the shade of a

tremendous tree, there is a woman wearing a long, dark blue dress. She might be the boy’s mother who represents safety and love. In the background there is a third figure – a woman wearing a white-red dress. The whole painting is thought to represent the divine land - Arcadia. The harmony is broken by an unnaturally big dragonfly that forecasts danger and death. In the painting Mehoffer depicted his love to nature and sensitively showed the passing of life. The garden is open for tourists from May to October in the museum’s opening hours, which are: on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10am-7pm. On Thursdays and
Fridays from 10am-4pm, on Sundays from 10am-3pm. It is closed on Mondays. The ticket costs 6PLN for adults, 4PLN for children. The family ticket (maximum 5 people including children) costs 12 PLN. On Thursdays, the entrance is free.

It’s hard to imagine that there used to be a city market in the place where currently so many people spend their free time. Quite big, wooden booths stood next to each other. All of them possessed big doors and shutters to sell items. The floor was made of bricks. The whole market was surrounded by a wall with forty round windows. Each stand allocated one window. Its construction began in 1823, and was finished in 1825. It was composed of three main gates, two of which exist until now. The first one led to Sienna Street. The other directed towards Dominikańska Street. The third constituted as the main entry to the market and was described as embellished. The majority of Cracow was destroyed by fire in 1850. The city market was devastated as well, but in 1855 it was rebuilt. However, it wasn’t supposed to serve its purpose for a long time. Designed by Juliusz Dumnicki in 1936, opened in 1940. Finished by Germans. The main purpose of building the covered market, was to carry on the trade in a more hygienic and better organized place. The city council decided to build it in the 1930’s. Karol Roll - then president of Cracow delegated two archi- t e c t s from Cracow to a journey to European co- untries. They were to see the latest and the most popular architectural styles of buildings. Architects visited Germany and Czech Republic.

The existence of the abbatoir in the neighborhood was the decisive factor that contributed to building the covered market in Grzegórzki. It was supposed to consist of twenty butcher’s, eight booths with pools to sell fresh fish, about forty stands to trade meat and five to sell cold meat. After its opening, the market that existed near Sienna street was closed. In the early nineties the space in the covered market was divided into two parts. It was reconstructed and it became a two storey building. Today, it is still one of the most popular places where people go shopping. KSENIA ŚLĘZAK

GET HEALTHY
FOR LIFE Here, warning signs to watch for - and fixes that will keep your smile healthy. WARNING SIGN: SENSITIVE
TEETH AND PAINFUL GUMS
WARNING SIGN: TWINGES Without that protection, most of us at this age have fillings, and that's where we often see cracks over 50. When a tooth is repaired, it's never as strong as the original one. But with age, even unfilled teeth become vulnerable to cracks. Those are prime breeding grounds for bacteria.
As bacteria build up at the base of your teeth, you may just notice a little bleeding when you brush them. But as the microbes multiply, they loosen gum tissue, eating into underlying ligaments and bone that hold teeth in place. Bacteria may also get into your bloodstream, increasing your risk of heart disease, diabetes, and other conditions.
FIX IT:
Another common entry point: the gum line, where tissue recedes with age. Decay here can become serious quickly because it's close to the tooth's nerve. If you don't prevent or catch it early, you could need a root canal.
Prevent early gum disease with professional deep cleaning, daily antibacterial rinses and more-frequent dental visits (typically once every 3 months).
FIX IT: Call your dentist if you feel even a slight twinge. It
If you have sensitive teeth, ask your dentist about typical fluoride or other prescription desensitizing agents. Over-the-counter fluoride rinses or toothpastes such as Sensodyne can also help. And go easy on bleaching, which can temporarily increase sensitivity. (Always check with your dentist before you start the whole process)
may take an x-ray to pinpoint the crack, which can be smoothed or filled. Larger breaks often require a full crown or cap.
PREVENT IT:
Your best defenses: brushing, flossing, and using a fluoride rinse. (In one study, twice-daily rinsers had nearly one-third the risk of root cavities as did people who used fluoride toothpaste and a placebo rinse.) But avoid rinses with alcohol, they can irritate older gums.
66
For people with sensitive teeth, often the reason is that periodontal disease has eroded their gums. This bacterial disease starts without symptoms, and many people don't know they have it until extensive damage has occurred. More than half of adults over age 55 have at least a mild case.
PREVENT IT:
"Get religious about flossing," Choose a toothbrush with soft, rounded bristles. Or try a rotation oscillation electric brush (check the label). Research shows that these reduce plaque and gum inflammation better than manual types.
WARNING SIGN: DRYNESS
Saliva is a magical elixir: It's antibacterial, acid neutralizing, and full of minerals that strengthen enamel. But 25% of women in their 50s don't produce enough, so they suffer bad breath and other problems as a result.
FIX IT: If your tongue or lips are often dry, tell your doc-
tor. More than 400 medicines are linked to dry mouth, including antidepressants and blood pressure and bladder medicines. A Tufts University study showed that patients taking at least one dryness-causing medication developed three times as many cavities as those not on a drug.Your doctor may be able to switch your prescription - and check for other causes of dry mouth, such as Sjogren's syndrome or sleep apnea.
PREVENT IT: For minor dryness or bad breath,
dentists suggest sugarless hard candy or gum sweetened with xylitol.
Daily tongue cleaning also helps. Brush on top, underneath, and as far back as you can reach. A tongue-scraping device, like the BreathRx Gentle Tongue Scraper or the one built into the Colgate 360 toothbrush, can make the job easier.
BE SURE TO ASK YOUR DENTIST THIS LIFESAVING QUESTION!
"Did you check my mouth for oral cancer?" Risk of the disease rises after age 40 (smokers are at highest risk). Half of all oral cancers are discovered in an advanced stage, when survival odds are low. If caught early, though, it's one of the most curable cancers, so make sure your dentist is on the lookout. If you notice any lumps or bumps inside your mouth, or persistent sores or discolorations, let him know.

to relax
THE IDEAL WAY Nowadays, everyone is constantly in a rush hurrying to work, to business meetings, to school etc.. Hardly anyone thinks about relaxing.
Take a moment to read this article about Thai massage- the oldest and most efficient way to relax, gain strength and energy.
HOW IS IT DONE? The person being massaged lies on a special mattress with moderate flexibility, wearing loose, comfortable clothing. Thai massage begins from the feet, moving upwards towards the head. During the massage, masseur works very hard with his/her body using hands, thumbs, elbows, forearms, as well as feet. Pressure coming from the elbows is put on the aorta, moving in a rhythmic way, resulting in the feeling of deep relaxation. The massaged person takes many positions, which derive from five basic poses of passive yoga, for example lying down on the front, on the back, on the side, sitting and inverted positions. A fully complete Thai massage session, should last 2 hours or more, during which the entire body is stretched and put under steady pressure. This also applies to pulling the fingers, toes, feet and ears. Everything is done in accordance to a many-centuries old procedure. After the massage, it is recommended to drink at least, one glass of water, to refill fluids in the body. PHOTO: PHOTOXPRESS

Thai massage is a type of a so-called deep massage. It is a sequence of techniques, which are a combination of acupressure on the most important points of the human body with passive yoga, stretching and reflexology. In Thailand it is known as “nuat phaen boran”, which can be translated as the ancient classical massage.
THE ORIGIN OF THAI MASSAGE Shivako Komarpaj is considered to be the founder of Thai massage. According to legend, he was the personal physician of Buddha. However, the history of Thai massage is much more complex than the simplified legend. Thai massage, just like Thai medicine contains influences from many cultures, such as China, India and other South Asian countries. Thai massage performed currently derives from 19th century schools in Siam, in which knowledge and techniques have been systematized. Still, even now, performed massages differ from each other. The Royal Academy of Massage in Chiang Mai is considered to be the best school of Thai massage. Their techniques haven’t changed in centuries.
TYPES OF THAI MASSAGE: CLASSICAL THAI MASSAGE Is a combination of acupressure and passive yoga techniques. This massage results in loosening tension in joints, tendons, muscles. It stimulates the circulation and lymphatic systems. It restores balance in the body, relaxes and gives a boost of energy.
MASSAGE WITH AROMATIC OILS The oils are extracts from lavender, palisandra, pranjipani, sandalwood, rose, and mint ylang-
-ylang. Its aim is to improve the immune and nervous systems, as well as accelerating the excretion of excess water in the body by stimulating the skin pores.
HERBAL COMPRESS MASSAGE Is performed by using white cotton bags, filled with a mixture of herbs, which have a beneficial
effect on the human body. The herbs include lemon grass, turmeric, the leaves of eucalyptus, ginger, or Cinnamomum. The herbal stamps are heated before the massage. That’s when the essential oils gathered in them are released. The oils are then massaged into the body. Besides giving a feeling of intense relaxation, herbal massage has an analgesic effect and stimulates the metabolism.
MASSAGE OF THE FEET Includes massage of the soles of the feet, toes, ankles, calves, the knee areas. It helps detoxify the body of toxins, improves sleep, improves the feeling of so-called “heavy legs”.
MASSAGE OF THE BACK, SHOULDERS AND HEAD Is a combination of various massage techniques. Its aim is to eliminate traumatic and chronic pains of various parts of the spine. It is performed by using warming ointments containing menthol and camphor. This technique also eliminates pain and pressure of the shoulders, neck and head area. It stimulates blood circulation to the scalp, thanks to which hair roots are strengthened.

Little bit of ladies nudity combined with acrobatic skills and a lot of men’s attention derived from admiration and desire. This is basically how, this exciting modern ritual called striptease works. It is something more than just gaping at bouncing breasts and naked shiny buttocks. Striptease is a kind of celebration of being sexually healthy a human. This is why most of the places performing striptease are being called gentleman’s club. They are designated for people (mostly men) conscious of their sexuality and at the same time capable of curbing their desires. Everything is organized as a game in which everyone can watch but can’t touch unless is permitted to do so. Very spectacular but sensual in a sense and gently erotic dance brings the pleasure to both sexes. Men find the beauty of female body in its exiting moves. Women (usually) find massive attraction to males gathered to admire their looks as well as skills. Strip club which is a most common name for that kind of place, provides a quite varied range of erotic fun you can get. From group choreography on stage called Showgirls to private performances named lap dance. All of that and many more including drinks and good music was discovered ages ago. Nowadays it just became more professional which makes it even more fantastic. So, just sit back, relax and enjoy the show.
