Few words from Editor American culture- one of the most dominant ones, doesn’t have to fit everyone. However, celebrating love seems to be a good idea even for most skeptical Poles. Valentine’s Day is probably not as popular in Poland as it is in Western Europe but it gains more and more participants every year. 14th of February, the middle of winter in Cracow. What a great opportunity to warm up and share some time with your second half (as we say in Poland). It doesn’t actually matter what you do that day, but being sweet and romantic pays off eventually. Try one of the ideas we have listed for you in section Take Some Advice. Winter means skiing and snowboarding so have a look at page 24 to see what ski-resorts Cracow has in the neighborhood. Think of buying your equipment. Polish shops offer exactly the same quality. Especially when € costs 4,5 PLN shopping smart might turn into pennies. Once again, we will take you for a walk, or maybe this time I shall say a ride. In section Let’s have a ride you will find some tips on how to use public transportation in a quite extraordinary way. Renting a tram for a wedding or a regular before- party sounds like an option for you? Or taking a tour with the retro tram? Still getting confused with our public transportation tickets? March, my favorite month of the year and it’s not only because my birthday is on the 25th. It’s the atmosphere. After weeks of cold and rather unstable weather, the sun shows up again, for more than just six hours. Snow and ice have melted, the temperature gets back to tolerable and finally you can put most of your jackets in the closet along with warm boots and long underwear. Nature comes back to the living and birds start singing, people are addressing each other more politely and … bullshit! Depressing darkness is already gone, that is true, but all you think about is how to get rid of those additional pounds you have gained during Christmas and carnival parties. Looking in the mirror makes you depressed again, so every morning, get up to brush your teeth… Go to the gym and work it out, you Fat ass! You walk outside to run away from this pathetic appearance. You find yourself in the street, full of commercials, posters and billboards. Surrounded by perfect slim bodies. Even the music doesn’t calm you down. I’m

Its aim is to popularize the evolution theory, based on natural selection, developed by Charles Darwin. It also shows the importance of science in various fields of everyday life. Darwin Day is celebrated on the anniversary of his birthday. According to Christians, it is the last Thursday before Lent. Fat Thursday begins the last week of the carnival. It is allowed to eat as much as you please this day. According to tradition, you should eat as many donuts possible. Don’t be surprised when you see mountains of donuts in grocery stores and café’s.

Another undeniable advantage of the pub is its location. Unlike to most of Cracow's premises it is not located in the basement, but on the ground floor. Along the large windows overlooking the beautiful Szczepanski Square, you can sit back and watch live sports or enjoy the bustling Old Town.

Men should remember about giving them flowers. Many café’s, or restaurants offer women free drinks, coffee, cookies etc. because of their day. In schools teachers don’t request anything from them.

The date is not a coincidence. In USA, March 14th is written as 3.14, just like the beginning of the number Pi. Unofficial holiday established in 1988. The pronunciation of Pi is similar to pie, so the main dishes on this day are apple pies or pizza pies.

In 2011, the first day of spring was celebrated for the last time on March 21st. The first day of spring is a popular day for students. It is commonly accepted that they don’t come to school or skip classes. Most schools organize so-called “fun-days” for students to encourage them to come to school.

WOMEN’S DAY

Developed by the World Wildlife Fund in 2007 according to their green policies. It takes place annually on the last Saturday of March. Its aim is to persuade ordinary people, as well as corporations to turn the lights off as well as all electrical appliances for one hour. It prompts us to reflect on climate change. So remember, between 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm- turn the lights off. Let’s help the planet.

WHY SHOULDN’T WE TRY TO GO EXOTIC AND HEALTHY AT THE SAME TIME?

SUSHI, a healthy way to enjoy your MEAL

Usually, when we think about healthy food we say fruit and vegetables, and when it comes to meat, most common people choose fish or chicken (white meat in general in opposition to red – beef and pork). Combining those will give us quite an easy result – Sushi. Asian cuisine, from which Sushi comes from is an extremely diversified and varied type of cuisine, which is a combination of seafood and exotic vegetables. Before we talk about the raw fish issue, it's worth adding a distinction about the terms "sushi" and "sashimi." In Japanese, the word "sushi" refers to seasoned rice, not to fish at all. Sushi may or may not contain fish. If it contains fish, the fish can but doesn’t have to be raw. If the fish isn't raw, it may have been cooked. More likely, however, the non-raw fish in sushi will be marinated in a liquid that includes an acidic ingredient like vinegar or lime juice. The term "sashimi" refers directly to sliced raw fish, often served with soy sauce and WASABI (green horseradish).

What is the most healthy thing in sushi then? Varieties of sushi that include only rice and vegetables offer vegetarian options that are rich in nutrients. For example, many restaurants offer sushi made with shiitake mushrooms, avocado, cucumber, burdock, UMEBOSHI plum paste (a pickled plum, which supposedly is very healthy and beneficial especially for the digestive system), and NATTO (a fermented soybean food that contains isoflavones and has been proven to help maintain bone health. Other varieties of sushi are wrapped in seaweed or NORI, a type of sea vegetable, rich in nutrients, including minerals (such as iodine) and phytonutrient lignans. There are many types of fish that you can find in a sushi restaurant that contain great amounts of nutrients. Omega-3-rich fish such as salmon, tuna, lake trout, herring and mackerel are popular sushi options.

YAKI SOBA Traditional Japanese buckwheat fried pasta with chicken and vegetables INGREDIENTS FOR 2 PERSONS DISH: 200 g of Soba pasta, 180 g of chicken fillet , 200 g of vegetables mix (carrot, mushrooms, pepper, pea, leek) 1 egg (omelet) Spices: light soy sauce, oyster sauce, Hoisin sauce, pepper, garlic, ginger, Seed onion, roasted peanuts, lucerne germ (for decoration) PREPARATION METHOD: Cook pasta as it says on the packaging (usually 5 minutes), rinse it with cold water and leave until the water drains off. Roast the chicken in Wok (or use frying pan if you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have it), add a spoon of garlic and chopped up ginger, mix it with vegetables and continue roasting. To diversify the whole thing you may put crumbled egg omelet inside. At last mix it all with pasta and season it with sauces.When everything is done, arrange it on two platters and decorate it with seed onion, roasted peanuts and Lucerne germ. Voila!

HOWEVER, WAITING IDLY FOR AN EVENING PARTY TO COME IS PROBABLY NOT THE BEST IDEA. INSTEAD OF SUGGESTING TO PUT ON SOME WARM CLOTHES AND EVENTUALLY GO OUT, LET US GIVE YOU A HINT ON HOW TO HAVE THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS: STAY WARM AND HAVE FUN AT THE SAME TIME.

1. GRZANIEC - POLISH MULLED WINE

When on a cold day you see a cheerful person holding a warm, plastic cup, there’s probably the most popular of Polish winter drinks in it. “Grzaniec” is a delicious, hot wine with sugar, cinnamon, crushed cloves, nutmeg and a bit of lemon. It’s especially popular served outdoors, but you can also ask for it in most pubs and restaurants. Sometimes I can’t wait for winter to come just to drink a cup of mulled wine with friends on Cracow’s main square. Yummy! PHOTOS(4): Dreamstime, PhotoXpress

2. MULLED BEER Of course cold beer is perfect in summer, but in Poland we can’t live without it in winter either. Hot, mulled beer is prepared similarly to “grzaniec”. It’s heated (never boiled!) with sugar or honey and a variety of spices, like cinnamon, ginger, clove or vanilla. It might sound strange, but some people like adding yolk or an egg instead of honey to make it healthier. Check it out!

3.RUM-FLAVORED TEA A cup of hot tea is always a good idea on a chilly, winter day. But you can make it more energetic with a tad of rum and lemon juice. That’s why in Poland rum-flavored tea is sometimes referred to as “tea with (electric) current”. One or two of these and you’ll definitely have your internal batteries recharged for a couple of hours.

4. KRUPNIK - HONEY-SPICED VODKA No matter if served hot or cold, it always warms the body from the inside out. It’s really tasty, so you can enjoy every sip of it, not like regular vodka. Of course, you may have a shot of Krupnik in almost every pub, but you can also buy it in most shops. Great souvenir, however it might be hard to resist opening a bottle in a hostel room once you try it.

5. VODKA!

If you’re pondering over what to drink on a cold, winter day for a long time, there’s a chance that you’ll miss the most obvious answer. Vodka is the most popular drink in Poland and you may always step into a pub for a shot. You don’t have to wait for an evening party to try it and have fun. Sometimes it’s just useful.

IT IS THE QUALITY OF SINGLE MOMENTS, NOT THE NUMBER OF DAYS, THAT BUILDS THE MOST EXCITING PART OF A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE. NEXT TO PEOPLE, THOSE UNFORGETTABLE MEMORIES ARE CREATED THANKS TO CITIES. SOME FOREIGN STUDENTS SHARE THEIR IMPRESSIONS AND STORIES WITH US FROM CRACOW. CURIOUS ABOUT THEIR ANSWERS? When I came to Cracow, one thing just hit me and it was the sense of its character. London is a huge city; it’s a city that has many different people living there and it has many faces. It isn’t unified in design or in tradition, and because of its size, most people only associate themselves with certain districts - not the city as a whole. When I paid visit to Cracow I felt the opposite way. I got the impression that it was one city with one community, which was a nice contrast to the capital of Great Britain. A moment to remember? Me and a couple of friends went on a pedal boat trip down the river when the sun was about to set. It was absolutely beautiful. The sun was setting perfectly, and we were all in awe of the lit up Wawel Castle. However, we had so much fun that we lost track of time and before we knew it, it was very dark and we were very far away from the mooring. Thankfully, the police arrived! They told us that we had our fun, and that it was time to head back. Thankfully, with the city lights to guide us, we made it safely back to the shore. Melbourne vs. Cracow? Well, for a start, Melbourne is much bigger and has a lot more people so there’s a lot more diversity in venues, although unfor tunately I haven’t been able to find anything like Cracow’s pubs in Melbourne. Maybe this is why I should start one up there! About adventures… I was on a tram once with some friends and we were laughing and having a good time when an elder lady came up to us and told us to stop laughing because it’s a public place. This June Poland and Ukraine will host the most important football event in Europe, the UEFA Euro 2012. Thirteen out of sixteen national teams participating in this extraordinary sport fest decided to pick Poland as their training base. And of course Cracow will be packed with the largest number of stars as English, Dutch and Italian teams decided to stay in our beautiful city! A true fan always follows his team and it won’t be a tough task due to the International Airport Kraków-Balice – the second largest airport in the country. Just take a look.

Getting to Cracow from Great Britain you will have plenty of options to choose from: Belfast, London-Gatwick, Bristol (all via easyJet), Newcastle (via Jet2.com), East Midlands, Leeds/Bradford, London-Stansted (all via Ryanair), Edinburgh and Liverpool (via both easyJet & Ryanair). There are also numerous ways to land in Cracow from Italy as Rome-Fiumicino (via LOT), Bologne, Cagliari, MilanBergamo, Pisa, Rome-Ciampino, Trapani (all via Ryanair) and Napoli (via Trawel Fly) are directly connected with the Cracow airport. Fans from Netherlands may get on a plane in Eindhoven (via Ryanair). Whole month of June will be one big football celebration and Cracow’s localization ensures fast

and convenient access to places where games will be held. Aside from good railway and motorway routes you can think about checking domestic flights to Warsaw, Gdańsk and Poznań (all via LOT), or international to Ukrainian Kiev-Boryspol (via Aerosvit). FEBRUARY IS THE IDEAL TIME FOR A WINTER BREAK. If you don’t have any plans, why don’t you think about some fun in the snow? Poland may not be located near the Alps, but we still have quite a few fine Ski Resorts, best for a one or two day trip. Below, you will find short descriptions of a few Ski Resorts, located in close proximity to Cracow, with easy bus access for those, who don’t have a car. If you don’t know how to ski or snowboard- don’t worry! Each ski resort offers trainers, who will help you take your first steps. If you don’t have any equipment, you can rent it at the resorts or you can buy your own at one of many sport shops located in Cracow. Think about it as an investment. YOU WILL FIND IT MUCH CHEAPER IN POLAND THAN IN WESTERN EUROPE OR GREAT BRITAIN!

WINTER SPORTS KOTELNICA BIAŁCZAŃSKA SKI RESORT:

One of the biggest and most developed ski resorts in Poland. There are seven different lifts, including one chair lift that carries six people, which is one of the most modern chair lifts in Poland. It is 1350 meters long. Its total lift capacity is about 3000 people per hour. It has wind protection shields, and heated, soft seats. The ride lasts 4,5 minutes. Keeping the security of the youngest in mind, a patented KID-STOP ® was installed, securing each passenger, especially children from falling out. You don’t have to worry about constantly taking out your ski pass in order to get through the gates. The gateway is equipped with a magnetic reader that is able to read your card from 60cm. As for the slopes, the longest trail is 1400 meters long, it runs beneath the chairlifts. It is an easy slope, perfect for beginners, families with children or for those who enjoy recreational riding. If you are a professional, and you like the thrill, there is a “black trail”, a very steep ride, and a professional snow park, perfect for snowboarders. When you get tired, Kotelnica Białczańska Ski Resort offers you a visit to Terma Bania, a thermal pool complex, equipped with numerous pools (water temperature about 34°C), water slides, Jacuzzis, Saunas, Spa and highly developed gastronomic service. You can get to the ski resort by bus directly from Dworzec Główny to the Ski resort for about 18 PLN (one direction). Prices range from 40-80 PLN (4 hours- 1 day).

ŚNIEŻNICA SKI RESORT:

Śnieżnica Ski Resort invites you to enjoy the four person chair lift of 1100 meters length, and the capacity of 2400 people per hour. The lift to the top station lasts less than 7 minutes. Śnieżnica Ski Resort is a wonderful slope, one of the longest near Cracow, artificially lit and snowed. It is defined as medium difficult. One of its characteristic features is a homogenous slope of 21% throughout the whole trail, which guarantees an excellent ride, both for beginners and experienced skiers. The length of the slope is 1400 meters and it is conducted entirely in the forest, which improves performance and gives more pleasure especially during strong winds. For those, who are taking their first steps on skis or snowboard, there is an easy, short trail prepared for them. Trails are prepared daily by two snow groomers, and snowed if necessary. The resort is about 50 km from Cracow, located in close proximity to Laskowa Kamionna Ski resort. Prices range from 30-70 PLN depending on the hours of your arrival, and on the time spent at the resort.

LASKOWA KAMIONNA SKI RESORT:

Located only 60 km from the heart of Cracow, towards the south-eastern border. You can get there by bus to Limanowa, from the main bus station. Laskowa Kamionna Ski-resort is a perfect destination for skiers and snowboarders. You will find three tow lifts and a four person chair lift (total lift capacity 3750 people/hour). There are trails for beginners, as well as for advanced riders. In case of some trouble with your equipment, you have ski-service at the bottom of the slope. If you do not own any equipment, there are plenty of ski and snowboard rentals. There is a snowboard/ski school and shops with accessories. When you feel like grabbing a quick bite, there is a restaurant and grill-bar with fulfilling meals, and hot drinks (some alcoholic) to warm you up. The longest trail is 2005 meters. The sum of all slopes is 4000 meters. The slope is artificially lit and snowed. Prices range from 45 PLN for four hours of fun to 75 PLN for the entire day (9am to 9 pm). A perfect choice, for people of all ages, and families.

KOTELNICA BIAŁCZAŃSKA SKI RESORT:

After trying out some winter sports, you may want to think about buying your own equipment. Renting is not as comfortable after a while and not so cheap either. Having your own equipment facilitates learning. It feels better when you are used to it, instead of constant change. There are numerous shops, where you can get professional help in selecting the ideal set, and where you can buy the best and most durable brands. For example, in Galeria Krakowska you can stop at InterSport. You will find equipment for every sport there, summer or winter. A different shop worth visiting is bikershop, located on 6 Czarnowiejska Street. Rowmix shop, located on 99 Mogilska Street will also meet your expectations (if you are a ski lover). In these sports shops, and probably in many others you can Shopping complete your snowboard gear for less than 2000 PLN, and I’m talking about designer brands, not the no-names. If you prefer to ski, prices also range from about 1500 PLN to 3000 PLN. However, you must accept the fact that if you are a pro like Shaun White, and you have high expectations- the prices of equipment also rise. But even though, divide all of them by the Euro currency rate, which is about 4.5 PLN for 1€ and see how much you can save by buying in Poland. PAULA ŁAZOWY

Since that time CouchSurfing community gathers through the website, all people ready for exploring the world and sharing their experience with others. All you have to do is log on to COUCHSURFING.ORG (now you can do it via an application on Facebook as well) and do a search for members who offer their couch for free in the cities on your itinerary. After someone accepts your couch request, you can start packing. The big adventure is around the corner! Since you have a free place to stay and cheap flights to book, visiting foreign countries on a shoestring budget became a real option. As for me, as I have been a part of that community for more than 2 years now, it is meeting the locals which makes the real value. If you are willing to be lavish, take your date to „Wierzynek”, one of the most extravagant restaurants in Cracow, located on the Main Market. Don’t worry if you can’t afford such a dinner- there are other beautiful restaurants, much cheaper, like Zen Sushi located on 29 Św. Tomasza Street- if you are a sushi lover. 2. CINEMA It is one of the most popular places to spend Valentine’s day. Romantic comedies may seem cheezy on a daily basis, but during Valentine’s day it is almost necessary to watch one. You can go to Multikino (128 Dobrego Pasterza Street) or Cinema City in one of Cracow’s malls like Bonarka City Center, Galeria Kazimierz or Plaza and watch one of 2012’s newest hits. Don’t forget to get a big bucket of popcorn and some fizzy pop. However, these are not the only options. Old Cracow’s movie theaters in the city center might change your date to a less American style. Visit the websites of ARS (6 Św. Jana Street) or Kino pod Baranami (27 Main Market Square). If you are single, you can also visit the cinema. There are new premieres of completely non-romantic films, like „Sherlock Holmes”, „Puss in Boots” or „Man on a Ledge”.

Or, maybe instead of buying each other small, useless gifts, be wild and get a room in a luxurious hotel, with a king size bed, champagne and strawberries dipped in chocolate? Even if you live together, such a crazy trip will definitely spice up your relationship.

4. CASINO If you really want to taste the American style – take your date to the casino. Cracow is not a second Vegas, but you will find some nice hot spots to spend your money in a gambling frenzy. Besides, who said you’ll lose? One or two jackpots might take you and your date to another level of relationship and lead you to one of those fancy places listed above.

5. DISCO People say that dancing brings people together, some even compare it to erotic sensations. Therefore, if you want to spend an interesting Valentine’s Night, go to a club with your beloved and dance all night long. Going to a disco is also the best solution for singles. NEW ATTITUDE TOWARDS CUSTOMERS BASED ON THE ITALIAN SENSE OF HOSPITALITY, THIS IS HOW THE NEW OWNER OF PAPARAZZI CLUB (WHO IS ITALIAN BY THE WAY) ON 9 MIKOŁAJSKA STREET WANTS TO ATTRACT INTERNATIONAL AND LOCAL CLIENTS. The word Paparazzi derives from Italian language and it refers to photojournalists who specialize in candid photography of celebrities, politicians, and other prominent people. This is how the place on Mikołajska Street used to be seen. Now Fabio wants to change it. I don’t want Paparazzi to be sort of an uptight or posh club. What I want people to realize, is that everyone who walks in here is going to be treated as a friend. The word Paparazzi was invented in the 1960’s (it comes from Frederico Fellini’s film ‘La Dolce Vita’) when literally almost everything in Italy was allowed. This is the type of atmosphere we want to introduce in our place. I bought Paparazzi four months ago – says Fabio, a typical cheerful Italian, intensely gesticulating with his arms while explaining the new concept to me, which he introduced in Paparazzi – and what I immediately noticed was that most of the bars in Cracow are a little bit stiff. People don’t pay too much attention to the customer service. All they care about is their margin, which is totally opposite to what we Italians are. We are open minded welcoming and cheerful. Born in Milan, grew up in Sicily, but spread his wings in managing a few clubs in London, (Soho House was one of them) where he spent fourteen years. Now he moved to our city. I train my staff by myself according to what I have learned in Italy and England. Our policy is based on contact with the clients. I constantly pay much attention to training. I want people to find Paparazzi relaxing and I want them to be satisfied with the service. Literally, I want my customers to feel at home here, like they feel sitting in their own living-room. Fabio told us how he sees Cracow in general and why he decided to move to our city and compared it to other places he visited.

Well, the great thing about Cracow is that you can meet a variety of people. You have lots of students and medical students, tourists and locals. I would really love to meet as many as possible and base my reputation on local clients who share their opinions with others visiting the city. I was socialized in London and I like the vibe of a mixture of partying people. I sat with Fabio on a comfortable sofa and talked about the future of Paparazzi club, surrounded by a fancy, delicious interior design and pictures of celebrities known around the world. But Fabio explained to me that this was not his concept, he wants normal people to feel as if they were celebrities. Fabio also plans some events for students. We are working on our menu to lower the prices and bring about some discounts. We already have karaoke night on Thursday (with two for one promotion) and Whisky night on Tuesday (whisky promotions). What we have planned next is an “Under 27 night” designed for students, starting in the second half of February. In the future, we would like also like to change the pictures, which hang on the walls. Instead of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, you will find some of our common clients – the real celebrities of Paparazzi club in Cracow. Fabio cares not only about the service but also personally supervises the menu, which is going to contain more than forty cocktail recipes. Basically everyone knows what a mojito and caipirinha is, but we’re gonna have much more than just that. Fabio and his crew seem to be determined to show the others how Paparazzi has changed, especially in the attitude towards its customers. TICKETS You can buy them in paper shops (called kiosks) all over the city or in every bus or tram in a ticket machine. You just have to choose the right kind of ticket. They are divided into two groups: the centre of Cracow and the first zone, which consists of the suburban areas of the city. In these places you can travel with no worries, but only with the following tickets:

For adults, for one ride in one vehicle no matter how long you are travelling or you can travel in as many buses or trams youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d like but only for 30 minutes.

TICKET FOR 2,00 PLN

For adults, a 15 minute ride in all means of transportation.

TICKET FOR 1,40 PLN

For retirees, children, and students with a valid student card or Euro Student Card. This ticket is valid for one ride in one vehicle, no matter how long it takes or for 30 minutes total in various buses and trams.

TICKET FOR 1,00 PLN

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also for retirees, children, and students with a valid student card or Euro Student Card. With this ticket you can travel for 15 minutes by many trams and buses. Tickets from the second group are those that you validate outside of the city, but they are mostly aimed at citizens living on the outskirts of Cracow. You should know that if there is no ticket machine or kiosk you can also buy tickets at the tram/bus driver but only by the exact amount of money. Remember that they are not allowed to give you change nor accept more than the ticket price!

PARTY VEHICLES

Urban means of transport can be rented for parties, different kinds of events and conferences. Vehicles can be hired for at least 3 hours, which is driving about 54 kilometers. Price depends on the kind of bus or tram. The rule: the more historic the device, the more expensive the rent in this case. Those interesting kind of parties are more and more common in Cracow, but not many people know that their history began in the 1980s. It all started when vehicles were rented to transport children to the cinema, theatre or during trips. Right now, we can differentiate four main reasons for renting buses or trams. Those are:

1. WEDDINGS AND RECEPTIONS.

Newlyweds hire a bus for their guests while the bride and groom are being driven to church by a historic machine.

2. PARTIES.

It is the domain of students (especially Erasmus) who rent a vehicle to organize a driving fete. Specially accommodated carriages can be hired and they ride in Cracow. 3. TIME VEHICLE.

During spring and summer you can sightsee Cracow from the historic bus or tram built in 1912. There are three different routes you can choose from. The first one is in the heart of the city. Travelers tour the Old Town. The second option is Kazimierz – an area where two contrasting cultures, Jewish and Christian, met. The last option is connected with Nowa Huta and the socialist realism. Russian cuisine much more than vodka and caviar It’s almost impossible to describe the kitchen customs of the biggest country in the world. The variety of meals is like the length of tracks of the Trans-Siberian train which connects Moscow with Vladivostok on the far east. Let’s try to extract the obligatory positions. It’s hard to decide whether it’s pochliopka or solianka that deserves to be named the queen of Russian table. The first one is a mixture of different vegetables. Onion, potatoes, white cabbage, leek, tomatoes, parsley and carrot is only the top of the list. All that is condensed with flour. Soljanka is different. Prepared in different ways may consist of fish, meat or mushrooms. Tastes a bit like a salty-hot & sour

cabbage (Shchi) and cucumber soup (Rassolnik), sometimes served with olives. No doubt they are both worth trying. Meat type of Soljanka you will find in Wiśniowy Sad Restaurant in Cracow. While there are two queens, there is only one indisputable king of Russian cuisine known around the world as Boeuf Stroganoff. Sautéed pieces of beef served in a sauce with smetana or sour cream. Pelmeni and Blini might be called the courtiers of the Russian cuisine then. Dumplings with a filling, wrapped in thin, unleavened dough, that originated in Siberia, which have a similar name in other countries like: Ukraine, Belarus and Latvia. In Poland,

a different type of pelmeni is called pierogi. Some of the best you will find in Wiśniowy Sad Restaurant in Cracow, serving Syberian Pelmeni and another type called warieniki. Blini are thin pancakes made with yeasted batter. They can be made from wheat, buckwheat, or other grains, although wheat blini are most popular in Russia. Wiśniowy Sad Restaurant which I mentioned before is also famous for its pancakes with caviar as well as for the exclusive cake Wiśniowy Sad. Fish was important in pre-revolutionary cuisine, especially during Russian Orthodox fast days when meat was forbidden. PIOTR NIESŁUCHOWSKI IS A 23- YEAR- OLD RISING STAR WHO TOOK PART IN THE VOICE OF POLAND A TELEVISION MUSIC SHOW. PIOTR MADE IT TO THE FINALS AND WON THE THIRD PLACE. HE ALREADY HAS HIS OWN SINGLE FEATURING ANIA DĄBROWSKA (A WELL KNOWN POLISH ARTIST) ENTITLED “THERE IS NOTHING WRONG” AND SINGS IN TWO BANDS: “THE ROOADS” AND “THE WITHOUT”.

What does music mean to you? I don’t like saying that music is my whole life or that it’s always been my never-ending passion. But it is true that it helps me cope with the reality that is not always that nice. Music is, though. How did the singing beginnings look like? I have actually always sang, even when I was a kid I used to run around with my headphones, yelling and jumping. When I was 17 years old, I joined my first band. When did you discover that you wanted to sing professionally? When I joined my first band, I just thought it could be a great way to make a living. But I was really young, naive and just didn’t realize what it takes. I remember my first concert, with my face covered with my hair. Standing there and trying to sing was really bad. Now I’m a few years older, I’ve got some more experience and there are more things that I am aware of. I feel more relaxed on stage, jump, run, rock out. Just love it. I didn’t really take any particular steps in the direction of professional singing. I’m not a professional. I just like doing what I do and keep doing it when I can. And I guess it pays off. I heard that you sing in two bands “The Rooads” and “The Without”. Where did the names come from? Both of my bands were created long before I joined them. The first band is called “The Without” - and honestly, I have no idea why. Before that, they were called “The Clarice” and as far as I know, it had something to do with the movie Silence of the Lambs. The other band is called “The Rooads”, which is kind of an allusion to the “Beatles”. They also had an „error” in spelling and they are the biggest idols of the guys, who founded the band. What kind of music do you play in those bands? With “The Without” we used to play funk rock. In times when they didn’thave the lead vocalist, they

also combined it with bits and pieces of jazz. Now it’s more of rock music, though we haven’t recorded or made any new material for the last few years. We just can’t find the time. Well, we are in the process of recording two new rock songs, but we have been in that process for a year now... “The Rooads”, on the other hand, does britpop, maybe a bit more rock-ish at times. I guess you could compare our music to what Oasis did, but in a little more of rock version. At least in most of the songs. Can the residents of Cracow count on any concert in the nearest future? There were plans to play in March with “the Rooads”, but there was some trouble with the club, so unfortunately we won’t make it. But we’re planning to come in the spring. We played there with “The Without”, though, in “Lizard King”. I think it was last November and before then we played there a few times as well. We hope to come back soon. In which clubs do you usually perform? We don’t have that much of concert experience in Cracow, but we played there a few times with “The Without”, in “Kolanko No.6” or “Lizard King”. I play a lot of gigs with “the Rooads” in Warsaw. We’ve played in quite a few clubs here, but our favorite is definitely “Piwnica pod Harendą” and we try to perform there regularly. You used to study In Cracow. What encouraged you to come to this city? I’ve always loved Cracow, since I was a little kid. Also, two of my friends from “The Without” live there, so I figured that if I moved there, it would be easier for us to play some more. How do you remember your time spent In Cracow? It was a great time! I met a lot of great people (with whom I still have contact). I’ve seen some great places and I spent such a wonderful time there. It felt a bit lonely at times, as I knew really few people at first, but it got better and better. Unfortunately, I had to give it up and go back home and now I live in Warsaw.

That’s really unfortunate for us Cracovians. What did you like to do the most in Cracow? What were your favorite places to visit? These are really difficult questions. A lot of people think I’m weird, because I just like walking around in Cracow. I can roam around the Main Square for a few hours and it makes me feel happy. I remember a few places, like “Harris Piano Bar” or “Dym”, but I also love the whole Bracka Street.There are a few great places on Kazimierz, such as “Kolanko No. 6”. But frankly speaking I’m not going to be very original when I say that I really love the Main Square. It just has this magic and climate to it.

I’ve always been skeptical about all those talent shows, I once vowed that I would never take part in any of them. But actually, it was them who called me and invited me to the pre-audition. So I just thought - what the hell? I gave it a try and... well, made it to the very end. I would have never expected such a thing.

Congratulations! That sure is an amazing achievement! How would you describe this experience? Hectic. Loads of work. It took plenty of time and effort. If I had known that it was going to look like this, I don’t know if I would have decided to do it. I’m sure I wouldn’t do it again if somebody asked me to. But it was also a great opportunity to meet some fantastic people. What did you learn while being there? I learned a lot! I hear much more things in music than I used to, I am a bit more familiarized with my voice, I know what I am capable of and I know how important the hard work is. It really means a lot to me, Ilook at all those musical aspects at a different angle. Did anything change in your life after the program? Yeah, probably a lot has changed, I just haven’t realized all of it yet. We’ll see after the album is out (and I hope

What are your upcoming plans after “The Voice of Poland”? I try not to make too many plans for the future. My primary goal now is to make a good record and then to promote it on concerts. Also, I really want to finish my studies and write my dissertation, just for my own satisfaction.

Can we count on a record to come out soon? In what musical mood would it be? We are working on it. So far there are a few ideas. We’re going to look into them and see the outcome. I’m hoping for a rock or at least rockish album and the plan is that this „rockishness” will be achieved by means of bass, drums and my voice, not too much guitar sounds. No specific plan as of now, so we’ll see! What do you enjoy doing besides singing? I am a translator, that’s something I really enjoy doing. Unfortunately, I haven’t had much time for this lately. I also play the guitar, not in a band, just for myself. I love John Grisham novels and I absolutely adore Woody Allen’s works. What is your biggest dream? My biggest dream would be... biggest concerts on biggest stages withthe biggest musicians. And an apartment on Manhattan. I hope you will be able to fulfill your dreams. A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY

‘ Here, I understood something / From my sisters and brothers customs’. Those are Czesław Miłosz’s words about Cracow from one of his poems. He was born in Lithuania - a multicultural society, what inevitably influenced his creative activity. His childhood became his source of inspiration. Calm village life and many journeys with his father were often impetuous for him. For many years he lived in the USA where he lectured literature on the university in Berkeley. In 1980 he received the Nobel Prize and in 1981 visited our country. He came back to Poland and settled in Cracow in 1994. This city reminded him of Vilnius and Paris.

TEN YEARS IN CRACOW

Miłosz led a very active life in Cracow. We could enumerate many addresses that he was attached to, but his private life was connected with only a few. His journey was launched on Św. Tomasz Street, where he was living for one year after war, but his favourite place that he lived in was on 6 Bogusławskiego Street. Here, his flat was located, from where he went for beloved walks on Planty. His favourite path led from the Wawel Hill to the Post Office on Wielopole. ‘ He was happy like a baby when hard frost was biting him on the cheeks. He didn’t have it in California.’

SPOTS TO OBSERVE PEOPLE

Miłosz, like many other poets loved observing people’s behavior. Guliwer Restaurant was one of his favourite places to do it. As it is located on the 6 Bracka Street he had many chances to see something prominent.He always ordered lemon panure there. The second place he could be met at was on 27 Main Market Square in Bambus Café. And

the last but not least café was strictly connected with his professional environment. It was Men of Letters Café on Kanonicza Street. A table in the garden was his usual spot there.

Professionally, he was connected with many newspapers and publishing houses in Cracow. Those spots are considered as very relevant addresses. 37 Kościuszki Street is the location of ZNAK publishing house. Miłosz spent many pleasant moments there, especially because of his friends’ presence who worked there, too. A different spot is 12 Wiślna Street, where the editorial office of Tygodnik Powszechny is located. He used to celebrate his birthday helping his colleagues with whis-

ky there. Miłosz watched over publications of his poems by himself so he often visited Wydawnictwo Literackie on 1 Długa Street. He used to meet with his fans there too.

HUMAN CITY

Miłosz must have felt a deep connection with Cracow because he chose this city from the whole world and finally decided to live here. He appreciated aspects that many people just walk by and seem not to perceive. ‘ I really like Cracow. I like it because it is the real university and still a human city.(…) Besides this, beauty of your city is important, too. Old tenement houses, architecture…’. His attachment to Cracow was spiritual. Above-cited words are the best confirmation of it. Year 2011 was announced as the year of Czesław Miłosz, because of the 100th anniversary of his birthday. In May 2011, the second festival dedicated to him was organized. During meetings, people from the whole world were talking about subjects raised in Miłosz’s poems. Those festivals are held every other year and they focus attention of the literary world to Cracow. Everything in the memory of Czesław Miłosz. Deservedly.

How old are your patients? I’ve got many in different ages. Kids too? Of course, two years old to start the list and there is practically no limit. Who is usually the most afraid of the dentist? There is no general rule and frankly speaking it has never been related to the age, even adults may panic in certain circumstances. What is the thing that people are most afraid of when going to the dentist? It’s probably pain as I presume. What is your method to calm the patient down? The atmosphere of the office might be terrifying a little bit. White smocks, syringes, the sound of the driller and the specific smell. patient. Introduce him to the procedure and to what is going to happen in the next few minutes. Talk to him or her. Secondly you have to diagnose if the anesthesia is necessary. If the patient is going to be injected with anesthesia, first we put some anesthetic gel on his gums. Because the injection itself is not the most pleasant thing right? Exactly. That is why we always use a tiny syringe and bring in the anesthetic very slowly. There are probably patients who are so afraid, that they ask you to put them to sleep immediately. There is a group of patient which we call “very hard”. It is almost impossible to carry out even a routine examination. That is probably a result of the past traumatic experiences they had. The only way to accomplish the procedure in those cases is full anesthesia. Do you actually put them to sleep? Yes, we have this opportunity in our clinic, however we usually try to convince them to undergo the treatment, while being conscious. It gives a lot more comfort for the doctor and the patient as well. The contact between these two makes it easier to accomplish the procedure with better results. But like I said, “very hard” cases usually reject that method and ask to put them to sleep. Is everyone allowed to be treated with full anesthesia? Patients need to be qualified by the anesthesiologist first. He or she is interviewed. All information about allergies, past diseases and anesthesia procedures are necessary. All of that brings the anesthesiologist to the decision whether or not the patient can be put to sleep. How long does the anesthesia take? It is recommended to make it as short as possible. The procedure in full anesthesia gives you a chance for the comprehensive dental treatment including removing teeth, working out cavity problems and installing the fillers. What should a person know, when planning to undergo this kind of treatment, which includes the full anesthesia? It’s not only what happens before, but also everyone should know how to behave after the procedure. He or she should not eat anything six hours before and after anesthesia. It is necessary to have a companion with you. A person “woken up” is not allowed to drive a car. Every time a case of anesthesia is being set, a board of doctors is present in the operation room: an anesthesiologist, an anesthetic nurse, a dental assistant and the surgeon with an assistant. This becomes really serious. The patient is being monitored all the time with an intubation pipe introduced in his body. How many patients decide to do it that way? Not too many, but there is a group highly interested, seeking for it. How expensive is this procedure? The full anesthesia costs around 600 PLN, plus the cost of the dental treatment. DOROTA CZYŻ

WHAT IS IT? Dance aerobic is a pleasurable form of cardio training. It means that it uses large groups of muscles in a continuous and rhythmic fashion for a sustainable period of time. During classes a trainer mixes steps and figures from aerobics with those from different dancing styles. It might be jazz, classical dance, Latino dance, hip-hop, locking or dancehall. Sometimes there are many steps from different styles combined in one choreography. The way the classes are led, depends on the trainer, but every constant part of it is the warm up - the first and very important puzzle of each physical exercise where your muscles and joints are getting prepared for extensive practice. So make sure you’re not late, because without it, you may strain a muscle, which may be very painful. WHO CAN EXERCISE THIS? It happens, that we do not know if we are skillful enough to train something. Having many doubts, people just give up the thought of even trying something new. To practice dance aerobics you need only one thing and that is strong will. Everybody learns new things with time. The level of difficulty depends on the trainer and participants. A well qualified trainer sees what he/she can do during classes after the first five minutes of warm up. They adjust exercises to the level of partakers and require more and more as time goes by. HOW CAN YOU PREPARE? All you need is a comfortable track suit, training shoes and positive attitude! It is important that your clothes do not limit your moves and in the same way don’t disturb while practicing.
