Few words from Editor Mostly football, but not only…
With 10.000 copies distributed each month, Cheers Cracow is the largest free English-language magazine in our city. Cheers Cracow is distributed in hundreds of locations in Cracow including hotels, hostels, restaurants, pubs, bars, clubs, shops, and other tourist attractions. Cheers Cracow is published monthly by: JB Company, Szczepański Square 3/8 IV floor, 31-011 Cracow Website: www.cheerscracow.com

Recycle this magazine by passing it on! Opinions expressed are those of the writers and do not necessary reflect those of Cheers Cracow or its publishers.
This time is probably simpler than ever. June is all about football (soccer when you are American) this year in Poland and Cracow for some reasons. Three of the top European football teams will stay in our wonderful city during EuroCup 2012 even though Cracow is not even hosting the tournament itself. That means something, doesn’t it? Daniel Jochemko will take you on a tour visiting the most important places where you might come across your favorite football stars, including the hotels that they will stay in and the stadiums they will practice at. But that is not the only reason why it is worth reading the 6th Issue of Cheers Cracow. Marcin Karolak will give us his newest edition of Cracow’s famous story and we all wonder if you figure out what was true and which part of it was just his freshly discovered fantasy. Go to page… to read the story about a football player, an astronaut and a knife that connected them both. Besides football, Cracow is also known for June’s Jewish Culture Festival which is one of the biggest in the world and definitely worth attending. Paula Łazowy who takes care of the culture type of events in our magazine will tell you the whole story about it and let you know how to buy tickets. Check out the Entertain Yourself section. Joanna Bucior, our unbelievably talented writer will take us on a “three elements” trip. Let the water, air and ground reveal their secrets in the summer in the city! All of that on page… Of course, you can’t miss our regular columns: the calendar by Paula Łazowy, the concerts schedule and 5 TIPS by Daniel Jochemko and the editor’s column, which this time Marcin Karolak took under his command to give you a funny description of the battle between the stadium and the pub when it comes to watching football games. Take a seat, grab the newest edition of Cheers Cracow and enjoy the EuroCup 2012. Cheers! Aleksander Olo Gurgul

our times The game begins. Both sides seem to have strong virtues. First strike – comfort. I don`t think that it`s really comfortable to go on within a big crowd, especially for those who aren’t tall and well-built. You can fall down in the moment of big emotional excitement. It can be funnier for people sitting comfortably at a table in a pub. Truth hurts. 1:0 for the pub. The game is on. Strike two – the spirit. One nationality gathered together at the tribune yelling for their players, cheering them up to fight and give their best! Yeah, of course – you can feel the spirit when watching a football match in a pub but it`s barely possible that your team will hear your scream. 1:1. What an exciting game! The stadium uses its secret weapon – The Mexican Wave! 2:1 but people in the pub don’t seem to be afraid. Menu. A well equipped bar always beats the crap out of food and drinks, which you can get at the
8
stadium. People in pubs laugh even louder, because they have the possibility to smoke tobacco, while at the stadium it is forbidden. 2:2. The joy of stadium fans was untimely. Another strike – vision. If you watch the game at the stadium you can choose on which part of the field you want to keep your attention. People in pubs must accept the view that sports channels offer them. Although people at the stadium have bigger opportunities, they can also see nothing if they have weak places. The judge decided 3:3. Oh no! We won`t be able to see the end of this fascinating game because the opponents from both sides ran into the field and the riots began. None of them will ever agree that the other is right. In this case the only thing you can do is to decide which of these fractions you will support. Both the stadium and pub are strong players so it`s possible that the battle will never end. Support your favourite and watch EURO 2012!

Out of sixteen national teams that will participate in UEFA EURO 2012, thirteen have chosen Poland as their base. With all the biggest football stars scattered around Polish cities, the brightest constellation will undoubtedly reside in the “city of kings” – Cracow. Players such as Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, or Mario Balotelli will be sleeping, training and partying in our beautiful city. We’re giving you some hints on where to find them. With “Cheers Cracow” in your pocket you won’t need a telescope to see the stars!
The Three Lions Let’s begin right in the heart of Cracow. English tourists might be able to see members of their national team without making any adjustments in sightseeing plans. Why? Because Hotel Stary, a respectable five-star gem of architecture, is located as close as it gets to the main square (address: 5 Szczepańska Street). After being blamed for staying at a remote hotel during the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, Fabio Capello’s squad couldn’t have chosen a better spot. Massive night life and lots of places to go just outside the main entrance; luxury and comfort inside – all of those aspects have great value as the English national team will have to travel more than 900 miles for their group stage games in Donyetsk! If you want to see them play live, but you don’t have a ticket for any match, you may see John Terry, Ashley Young and others during their open practice. The first one will be held on the 8th of June at Hutnik Municipiality Stadium located at 4 Ptaszyckiego Street in Nowa Huta district.

Oranje Very strong Dutch team, which finished second at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, won’t reside far from the “Sons of Albion”. Oranje is going to stay in the Sheraton Hotel (address: 7 Powiśle Street) situated on the bank of Wisła river, just next to the magnificent Wawel Castle. A fully equipped health club with an indoor swimming pool, luxurious bars, restaurants and a fantastic view from the hotel room - things like that will definitely prove useful during Netherland’s road to regaining the European Championship crown (they won only once: in 1988). The Dutch will certainly appreciate their training spot as well. They decided to hold practices on Stadion Miejski im. Henryka Reymana located at 22 Reymonta Street. If you don’t know, it’s the stadium of Wisła Kraków, the reigning champion of Polish football league, so the place certainly has championship qualities. The first open practice of the Netherlands national team is scheduled for June 6th.

Azzurri Italians decided to search for an even calmer spot and have chosen a place outside the city of Cracow. A couple of months ago superstars such as Pirlo, Buffon, or De Rossi had no idea where Wieliczka is situated. Right now they’re definitely aware that they will be staying in The Turówka Hotel & SPA (address: 1 Żeromskiego Street, Wieliczka), about 9 miles southeast of Cracow. Quiet and cozy atmosphere away from the big city bustle will certainly calm Mediterranean tempers and let Italians concentrate solely on football. They are going to constantly improve their skills on Marszałek Piłsudski Stadium located at 1 Kałuży Street, with their first open practice planned for June 7th. Join them!

Do you think that there can`t be links between football, kitchen and space stations? Well then, you probably didn`t awake your imagination enough. This month we will help you with that by giving you an example.
Sad destiny of the football
player and the space station astronaut
In 1998 a very unfortunate accident happened during the match between Wisła Kraków and AC Parma. Italian player Dino Baggio was struck by a knife thrown from the tribune occupied by polish football fans. Police even caught the one responsible for that undoubted act of aggression. Although the guilty man was punished and put in prison, we can try to find another, more imaginary explanation for that incident. Philosophers throughout centuries taught us that there aren’t any explanations and theories not worth considering. We have many space stations around our planet. It`s obvious that we haven`t become acquainted with the whole universe and even our own galaxy. So many astronauts, investigating cosmic space, are living their lives existing in space far from home.
20
Why am I mentioning that? I will explain that, let`s be patient. The astronauts while being in space, have the same needs as usual people on earth. They have to eat, prepare their meals, although they can have some problems with the lack of gravity. They do the best they can even though they long to their native planet. Let`s consider such an eventuality, in which a poor lonely astronaut was making his sandwich for breakfast and accidently dropped his knife while cutting bread. Somehow the knife got out of the station and fell down to earth. It decelerated through the atmosphere and met his destiny on the Wisła stadium. Imagine how miserable the astronaut would be if that was the only knife at the space station... Marcin Karolak

tips for Euro 2012
in Cracow
If you’re holding this issue of Cheers Cracow, you’re definitely in the right place at the right time, especially if football is what you came to see. We’ve been waiting for a long time, but the biggest treat for all sports fans in Europe, the UEFA Euro 2012, is finally here! Even though Cracow is not one of the host cities, the football fever here is in full effect. Here are some tips on how to get the best out of your stay in Cracow during the football packed June. Enjoy!
1. Feel the real spirit of football
Watching a football game on TV with a bunch of friends is always a good idea. It’s even better when you go to a pub full of other fans and cheer for your team in a larger group. But to really feel the spirit of Euro 2012 you have to go further, because football atmosphere often comes with size. That’s why the fan zone located in the Błonia area (a ten minute walk from the Old Town) is the place to be! It is able to receive 15,000 enthusiasts of football at once, play transmissions of matches on gigantic screens; there are pubs, souvenir stalls, mini soccer pitches, eating places – everything that you need plus the unique atmosphere of multiculturalism and pure joy of watching football. Don’t miss the place!
22
PHOTOS(4): Dreamstime, PhotoXpress
2. Watch out for prices
The fan zone is a great thing, but prices in such a venue are a totally different story. Small, light Carlsberg (the official UEFA Euro 2012 beer and because of that the only available in the fan zones) for 4€ or more? For one beer or two it’s okay, but that’s not the amount of money you’d normally spend in Poland. Prices in most pubs and restaurants are going to be lower, but still they might be up to 10% higher than usual. The same refers to prices in shops, especially the smaller, private ones and those located close to popular football fan spots. The differences won’t be stunning, but if you’d like to save some money, compare prices in a couple of places before you buy something. Your wallet will be grateful. You’ll see more and will be able to get a few more drinks after another win of your team.
3. Make the atmosphere even better
4. Watching games is nice, but…
During events like this we tend to forget that the most important thing in football is actually playing it. You’ve arrived with a bunch of friends, so why don’t you just grab a ball and play a friendly match with guys from another country? You can have a beer in the evening, but before that you have an unique opportunity to challenge people from somewhere else, or have a rematch after a painful loss. The fan zone is located right next to Jordana Park, where you’ll find plenty of space for a game. If not, there are dozens of football pitches scattered around the city (the best ones are called ‘Orlik’). Move your butts and show some skills!
Most Polish football fans are going to be friendly and hospitable, but it will be more than welcome to know at least a few facts about our national team. Tongue twisting surnames of our best players: great trio from Borussia Dortmund - Błaszczykowski, Piszczek, and Lewandowski, or Szczęsny from Arsenal, are something that every Polish fan will be glad to hear from a foreigner. If you add a small gadget like a white-red scarf to your fan gear, you’ll soon find a great deal of Polish friends who are always ready to party with you. There has to be some degree of rivalry in football, but together we can make this event really special!
5. Remember about some rules
Euro 2012 is definitely one big football fiesta, during which you’ll have plenty of time to cheer and celebrate with your mates. All night parties after big wins, dancing and singing in the streets, liters of alcohol – that’s cool, but at times we might go a little too far. There will be lots of police officers wandering around Cracow and even though the rules won’t be so tight, you’ll still get a fine for drinking in public places or disturbing the peace late at night. Let’s try to avoid bad memories. daniel jochemko

PHOTOS: DANIEL JOCHEMKO
he art of the city
DANIEL JOCHEMKO
Yes, these walls in Cracow are not what they used to be. I remember that for a long time there have been lots of writings on them, from time to time a nice graffiti, but mostly uninspiring acts of vandalism. Right now you will be able to find very interesting pieces of street art in many public spaces all over the city. Hmm, street art? What is that exactly? There is no simple definition of street art. Basically, we might say that it’s a form of art, mostly visual, that we can find in an urban environment. If you see pictures and paintings created with spray and a stencil in the streets – that’s street art. But it’s only the most basic (and in fact the most popular) form. You may also find stickers which, for example, comment current political issues, mosaics, street installations, or encounter a flash mob. These are also elements of street art, just like colorful advertisements and promotional slogans sprayed on walls (so-called guerrilla marketing). There are no clear boundaries and divisions – you’ll probably just recognize it when you see it. For some people it’s considered vandalism, for others street art is an interesting tool for expressing themselves, asking difficult questions, or simply beautifying and regenerating ill-looking urban spaces. No matter the opinion, it has caught interest and gained popularity all around the world.
Street art has been present for quite a long time before it became as popular as it is today. And the boom that started in the early 2000’s is mostly due to one person. Yes, you might not be familiar with street art, but you must have heard about Banksy. This mysterious, England-based street artist is probably the most important figure behind the phenomenon of making this form meaningful and mainstream. His creative paintings on walls all over the UK, or witty installations like Murdered Phone Booth made his unique style recognized and respected in art galleries. One of his works called Bombing Middle England was sold for more than £100 000! Even his first movie Exit Through the Gift Shop got nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary in 2010. And we still don’t know what he looks like! Successes like these lured many people towards street art. Now Banksy is just one of the numerous street artists and names like Nunca, Faile, JR, Sickboy, C215, or BLU that are only a few notable ones.
28
The last one of the above-mentioned has created a really impressive piece of street art that you may find on Piwna street in the Podgórze district, right next to the Drukarnia Jazz Club. That’s definitely a must-see on Cracow’s map of street art! But there’s waaaay more to explore. For an awful lot of time I used to walk around the city like a clichéd tourist: from one place to another mentioned in the guidebook. It’s ok, but if you take into account that sometimes you may take an unplanned turn into an empty street, take a closer look at some banged up walls, or just wander without a map in front of your eyes, you’ll discover that Cracow has a lot to offer in the area of street art. There are numbers of really intriguing pieces scattered around the city. Don’t hesitate to take a longer walk on a sunny day! Explore!
29
One of the very few places in town, in which you will feel as a celebrity. Luxurious design, comfortable sofas, delicious food and fancy but still affordable cocktails. An absolutely perfect place to hang out during this summer.
new atmosphere
Same outlook, The word Paparazzi derives from Italian language and it refers to photojournalists who specialize in candid photography of celebrities, politicians, and other prominent people. This is how the place on Mikołajska Street used to be seen. Now everything is all about to change. Paparazzi is no longer an uptight posh club. The word Paparazzi was invented in the 1960’s (comes from the film ‘La Dolce Vita’) when literally almost everything in Italy was allowed. This type of atmosphere has been recently introduced in Paparazzi. Everyone who walks in here is going to be treated as a friend!
Cheerful staff that pays a lot of attention to the customer service – this is how Paparazzi differs from other stiff clubs in Cracow. It’s owner Fabio, who was born in Italy and spent many years in London managing numerous clubs, trains his coworkers by himself. He personally supervises all the actions taken in Paparazzi and probably this is why you will find this place cheerful and relaxing at the same time almost as if you were sitting in your own living-room.
30
Cracow has been always known for its great variety of citizens. Basing on their opportunity Paparazzi takes advantage of it in 100%. Lots of tourists, who visit our city and lots of students, who live temporarily in Cracow, give a great partying mixture. A large part of this company vibes in Paparazzi on Mikołajska Street. The new concept of Paparazzi is to make regular people feel for a moment as if they were the real celebrities in the club. This is why student-type-of-events are launched in Paparazzi. “Under 27” is one of them, or karaoke night on Thursday (with two for one promotion) and of course Whisky night on Tuesday. Comfortable sofas, delicious food and fancy but affordable cocktails (more than forty on the cocktail menu!), this is how Paparazzi is going to attract its clients this summer. aleksander olo gurgul

“Very Cracovian” as one of our guests described Guliwer. Famous scholars, representatives of art, science and humanities including literature, often visit us. Wisława Szymborska used to pay us numerous visits, Czesław Miłosz was an often guest, always ordering his favorite lemon tart.

drink wine and have a little bit more
Guliwer Café&Restaurant was launched for those seeking a cozy and casual atmosphere, in the neighborhood of the Main Market, who want to eat a tasty breakfast, lunch or dinner. For those who want to try excellent wine in an affordable price, or just a cup of coffee or tea brew and enjoy a splendid desert. We serve meals derived from Polish, Italian and French cuisines, based only on healthy natural ingredients with lots of herbs without any artificial
reformers, until late hours. The cakes we recommend: apple pie with cream, chocolate cake, lemon tart (Czesław Miłosz’s favorite) or crème brulee are prepared every single day by our chefs on the spot. Absolutely superb aromatic coffee Carraro, roasted in a family coffee-roasting plant in Italian Schio as well as natural, high quality tea brews La Via del Te along with really dense hot chocolate, seem to be a perfect complement of our Menu. Wine is definitely our specialty. We pick only short selections of wines from all over the world, which you can order in glasses or decanters in affordable prices (even for students). We also offer wines in bottles from our rich wine list. Guliwer Café&Restaurant is also an excellent choice for those who while having a break in school or at work, would like to check their e-mail, enjoying a cup of coffee or even lunch (We’ve got Wi-Fi). It’s a perfect stop on your way to the Concert Hall, vernissage or cinema which Cracow is famous for and proud of. Finally, Guliwer is a great place for family and sociable gatherings, intimate as well as big ones, at a ceremonious dinner or with a glass of wine and a snack.
„Very Cracovian Cracow” as one of our guests said.
A place where you can have breakfast or dinner in a cozy and casual atmosphere spending reasonable money which is not common in the Main Market area! Lots of herbs and a wide range of cakes including Miłosz’s favorite lemon tart! Delicious coffee Carraro roasted in Italian Schio and a cup of tea infusion La Via del Te will make your day. Wine is our specialty Affordable for everyone and mindfully selected from short series from around the world. Order a glass or a decanter.

If you want to get a real taste of finest russian cuisine - come and visit us!
Russian cuisine much more than vodka and caviar It’s almost impossible to describe the kitchen customs of the biggest country in the world. The variety of meals is like the length of tracks of the Trans-Siberian train which connects Moscow with Vladivostok on the far east. Let’s try to extract the obligatory positions. It’s hard to decide whether it’s pochliopka or solianka that deserves to be named the queen of Russian table. The first one is a mixture of different vegetables. Onion, potatoes, white cabbage, leek, tomatoes, parsley and carrot is only the top of the list. All that is condensed with flour. Soljanka is different. Prepared in different ways may consist of fish, meat or mushrooms. Tastes a bit like a sal-
ty-hot & sour cabbage (Shchi) and cucumber soup (Rassolnik), sometimes served with olives. No doubt they are both worth trying. Meat type of Soljanka you will find in Wiśniowy Sad Restaurant in Cracow. While there are two queens, there is only one indisputable king of Russian cuisine known around the world as Boeuf Stroganoff. Sautéed pieces of beef served in a sauce with smetana or sour cream. Pelmeni and Blini might be called the courtiers of the Russian cuisine then. Dumplings with a filling, wrapped in thin, unleavened dough, that originated in Siberia, which have a similar name in other countries like: Ukraine, Belarus and Latvia. In
Poland, a different type of pelmeni is called pierogi. Some of the best you will find in Wiśniowy Sad Restaurant in Cracow, serving Syberian Pelmeni and another type called warieniki. Blini are thin pancakes made with yeasted batter. They can be made from wheat, buckwheat, or other grains, although wheat blini are most popular in Russia. Wiśniowy Sad Restaurant which I mentioned before is also famous for its pancakes with caviar as well as for the exclusive cake Wiśniowy Sad. Fish was important in pre-revolutionary cuisine, especially during Russian Orthodox fast days when meat was forbidden. Salad with salmon and caviar is probably the best way to start the meal with an obligatory shot of vodka… All of that and much more you will find on 33 Grodzka Street. KUBA WIRUS
One of the biggest events of this sort in the world, takes place in Poland, annually since 1988. Its main purpose is to promote Jewish culture, history and faith, which flourished in Poland before the Holocaust and popularize it around the globe. The Festival also aims to familiarize people with modern Jewish culture, which is developing mainly in the United States and Israel. It strengthens understanding and reconciliation between Poles and Jews. During the event Jewish music is presented: folk, classical, Klezmer, synagogue and Hasidic. Other parts of the program consist of films, shows and exhibitions concerning Jewish content. One of the fixed points of the program are workshops, such as Hasidic dancing and singing or Hebrew calligraphy. You can master Jewish paper-cutting or try some traditional cuisine. People from Ashkenazy and Sephardic cultures conduct the workshops, attracting numerous learners. As mentioned earlier, the first Jewish Culture Festival was held in 1988. Its program was centered around a session devoted to the meeting of cultures- Polish and Jewish. A small event at the time, grew to a globally recognized Festival over the years. It became a great opportunity to meet Jewish culture lovers from around the world. Over two hundred concerts, screenings, lectures, shows, films etc. are held every year. Each Festival lasts nine days beginning on a Saturday and ending on a Sunday. It is usually held in late June or early July. The inaugural concert and final concert are the most important ones during the entire event. The former usually takes place in one of Kazimierz’s seven synagogues. It presents cantoral music. The latter is always organized outdoors

in Szeroka Street, featuring Klezmer music. During recent Festivals, over 13,000 people attended "Shalom on Szeroka street," the grand finale concert. The program of the Festival also includes tours around Kazimierz’s synagogues, cemeteries or the Nazi-era Cracow Ghetto. Year to year, the number of guests attending the Festival grows. Additionally, television coverage brings the event to viewers and supporters across the world. PHOTOS: www.jewishfestival.pl

Being an artist
in Cracow
Is Cracow really a capital of Polish art and culture? How is it like to be an artist in Cracow? How does polish art look like considering the European art market? –these and other questions are answered by Roch Urbaniak, the painter. 56
Roch, do you agree with the current opinion that Cracow is the capital of polish art and culture? Probably many people would like to disagree, but indeed Cracow is the most artistic city in Poland, it doesn`t matter what Warsaw or Danzig (Gdańsk) have to say against it. How does polish art look like on the European art market, if we would try to describe it? To be honest, I think it runs in two different paths. It is a consequence of the two circulations of art in our country, I can say. First is (as I call it) the “artistic” one: important exhibitions, important custodians and advertising at the art fairs. Within this circulation we can hear the legend that polish art is popular, trendy. A few years ago there was a big boom on polish art when Wilhelm Sasnal and the “Ładnie” group had their success. Especially he advanced the position of polish art on the European art market. And that`s the first circulation – “circulation of art history” and one of the big galleries. And what`s the second one? The second one I will describe as the “commercial”, but in a good meaning. There are artists who simply earn for living on it. They collaborate with galleries. People buy their paintings gladly.
I know that you have traveled a lot. Does traveling inspire you? The most important thing when travelling, apart from intent watching everything around you, is talking to people. Maybe it doesn`t have a strict influence on my paintings but I think that traveling opens your head and lets you freely manipulate subjects and plastic forms. Is it possible to make money for living only by making art? Yes, it is. You have many galleries which advertise and sell art. For example Kersten Gallery is respected and people often visit it. It prospers very well on the art market. So indeed Cracow is full of art, isn’t it? As I said we have several dozens of galleries and still new ones pop out. More than that – every week there are a dozen or so varnishing-days. And there is still place for that! And that`s wonderful about this city – a lot of place and energy to make art. Thanks for the conversation. MARCIN KAROLAK
What`s the relation between the two circulations? Firstly, there is an opinion that polish art is trendy but on the other hand you can see that some artists have their successes, smaller or bigger. We can`t generalize. There is also a risk, in the second circulation, to be classified as the artist from Eastern Europe. People of art like to put few works of art in one bucket. It`s not an accusation because, for example, Russians and their works are well respected. The generalization by itself is wrong. Does Cracow inspire you? If not, then what does? What has the main influence on you as an artist? R: Cracow as a city doesn`t inspire me. I`m fascinated for a long time now by ethnography and folk art from around the world. I believe in the theory popularized by Carl Jung or Joseph Campbell which generally says that all people share the same attitude regarding aesthetics, mythology and legends. They share the same sensitivities and the same stories.

The Sokół (Falcon) gymnastic society has played an important role in the history of Poland, at times when our country didn’t even exist on a map. Today the legend comes back to life during the EuroCup 2012. Wouldn’t it be nice to watch a football game while sitting in a historic sports site?
A healthy mind
in a healthy body Initially Sokół was launched in Lviv (which belonged to Poland before World War II) as a society for improving the physical abilities of young Poles and their national consciousness (A healthy mind in a healthy body has always been Sokół’s motto). In 1884 Cracow joined Sokół as one of the branch offices. Thirty years later the society joined Legiony Polskie to fight for the independence of the country and mostly this is why Sokół is so well known in Poland. In the history of Poland, Sokół played a vital part when it comes to football. Thanks to the society’s initiative, the first ever football game has been performed in the lands of Poland (at the time our country was stripped into three pieces between the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, Prussia and Russian Empire). Two teams representing Cracow and Lviv clashed on the 14th of July 1894 to begin a rich tradition of football, even though in both cities football was seen as a plebeian sort of entertainment at that time. Today with the EuroCup tournament approaching, the legend of Sokół strikes back. You can visit the building of the society on 27 Piłsudskiego Street to learn more about it’s rich tradition and enjoy the football game on a wide screen while drinking a cold beer. Pod Sokołem Restaurant invites you to watch every single game of the EuroCup 2012 tournament in its beer garden.

. Dzok, the dog
the impressive power of devotion and loyalty 60
Cracow consists of many stories, legends about heroic people and their achievements. The city used to be a capitol of Poland and home of the Polish kings, who are sleeping their eternal dream in the Wawel Castle’s Cathedral. Near the ancient castle we can notice the monument of a dog. It’s not just a statue of a typical, ordinary dog. It`s the monument of Dżok, the dog. The description written on the plaque says (both in Polish and English): “Dżok, the dog. The most faithful canine friend, ever epitomising a dogs boundless devotion to his master. Throughout the entire year /1990-1991/ Dżok was seen waiting in vain at the Rondo Grunwaldzkie roundabout to be fetched back by his master, who had passed away at the very site.” It all began with the tragic accident – Dżok`s owner and his master died as a consequence of a heartattack. The whole incident took place at the Grunwaldzkie roundabout and as the description says, the desolate and lost dog couldn`t deal anyhow with his master’s destiny.
railway territories where he finally met his end dying under a riding train to meet his master in the other world.
The story rose to be one of the legends that our city has to offer. The dog waited for his master for an entire year. People fed Dżok and felt sympathy for the poor pet, who didn`t lose faith that his master will finally come back for him. It`s tragic because the poor dog probably thought that his master forsook him. It`s barely possible that an animal can understand the meaning of death, especially considering the one of his own almighty and loving master. After a year he agreed to be taken by an old woman, who took care of him for a few years. She died in 1998. As we know the dog ran away and roamed through
It may turn out that you won’t find any information about this statue in typical sightseeing guide-books but if every city has its own urban legend that is unique and special although not so widespread as main local tales, the story of Dżok is definitely one of those. Dżok, the dog shows us honest, authentic devotion and loyalty that is very special, even concerning human nature and our capacity of devotion. We can learn much from this noble dog.
The municipal authorities were not so enthusiastic to set a statue for a dog, even such a unique one as Dżok was. Many organizations, celebrities and citizens supported the idea so finally the monument, created by Bronisław Chromy, was exposed to public view in 2001. In those days Dżok`s monument was the third monument of a dog in the world. Similar stories as Dżok’s was shared by Greyfriars Bobby from Edinburgh and Hachikō from Tokyo.

You go to sleep
and they start drilling your teeth
PHOTOS: Dreamstime
The terrifying atmosphere at the dental office, unpleasant injections. How to chill out the patient before the procedure and about drilling under a general anesthetic. We will talk about all of these with Doctor Renata GÄ…siorowska from Astradent dental clinique.
How old are your patients? I’ve got many in different ages. Kids too? Of course, two years old to start the list and there is practically no limit. Who is usually the most afraid of the dentist? There is no general rule and frankly speaking it has never been related to the age, even adults may panic in certain circumstances.
64
What is the thing that people are most afraid of when going to the dentist? It’s probably pain as I presume. What is your method to calm the patient down? The atmosphere of the office might be terrifying a little bit. White smocks, syringes, the sound of the driller and the specific smell. That is why the first thing you need to do is chill out your patient. Introduce him to the procedure and to what is going to happen in the next few minutes. Talk to patient. Secondly you have to diagnose if the anesthesia is necessary. If the patient is
going to be injected with anesthesia, first we put some anesthetic gel on his gums. Because the injection itself is not the most pleasant thing right? Exactly. That is why we always use a tiny syringe and bring in the anesthetic very slowly. There are probably patients who are so afraid, that they ask you to put them to sleep immediately. There is a group of patient which we call “very sensitive”. It is almost impossible to carry out even a routine examination. That is probably a result of the past traumatic experiences they had. The only way to accomplish the procedure in those cases is full anesthesia. Do you actually put them to sleep? Yes, we have this opportunity in our clinic, however we usually try to convince them to undergo the treatment, while being conscious. It gives a lot more comfort for the doctor and the patient as well. The contact between these two makes it easier to accomplish the procedure with better results. But like I said, “very sensitive” cases usually reject that method and ask to put them to sleep. Is everyone allowed to be treated with full anesthesia? Patients need to be qualified by the anesthesiologist first. The patient is interviewed. All information about allergies, past diseases and anesthesia procedures are necessary. All of that brings the anesthesiologist to the decision whether or not the patient can be put to sleep. How long does the anesthesia take? It is recommended to make it as short as possible. The procedure in full anesthesia gives you a chance for the comprehensive dental treatment including removing teeth, working out cavity problems and installing the dental fillings. What should a person know, when planning to undergo this kind of treatment, which includes the full anesthesia? It’s not only what happens before, but also everyone should know how to behave after the procedure. He or she should not eat anything six hours before and after anesthesia. It is necessary to have a companion with you. A person “woken up” is not allowed to drive a car. Every time a case of anesthesia is being set, a board of doctors is present in the operation room: an anesthesiologist, an anesthetic nurse, dental sergeont, dentist with asistents. This becomes really serious. The patient is being monitored all the time. How many patients decide to do it that way? Not too many, but there is a group highly interested, seeking for it. How expensive is this procedure? The full anesthesia costs around 600 PLN, plus the cost of the dental treatment. dorota czyż
