Cracow is the city that tourists mainly associate with the historic center – beautiful houses, home to charming cafes, where you can spend the whole day, enjoying the spirit of the era; with pearls of sacral architecture – the St. Mary Basilica, Saints Peter and Paul Church, the Wawel Hill and places that show Cracow has been a place specifically related to tradition and history. Tourists visit the places associated with a very vivid memory of the Jewish community that lived in Cracow. Kazimierz – the district where time flows differently, among the low buildings, we can admire the tower springing Corpus Christi Church or synagogues, which provide a multi-cultural traditions and history of the place. However, Cracow is a place that inspires the other space explorers – post-industrial spaces, which, as it turns out, in Krakow there is a dime a dozen. It turns out that the best escape from, sometimes stuffy and too artistic, Cracow is exploring the industrial spaces, often converted to a fantastic places, about
which we do not know anything. These places amaze its grand scale and gauge. We recommend to start the tour of the post-industrial Cracow from Zabłocie district, which until now was not very attractive region. Today, through improved urban infrastructure, Zabłocie is a district, which is easier to get, and the district, which has a lot to offer. Here is the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCAK), and the building of the former factory of Oskar Schindler's enamelware, we have museum – one of the departments of the Historical Museum Cracow – Oskar Schindler's Enamel Factory. In a gloomy, typical block on Lipowa 4a Street – a former electronics plant Telpod-Unitra, operates today not only electronic production line, but also a number of other facilities, such as a photo studio. The erstwhile mill “Seed” on the street Zabłocie 25 now we can see exclusively furnished lofts, which appear in this part of Cracow perfectly in time with the global trend of the post-industrial reactivation.

The former cosmetics factory “Miraculum” today is the headquarters of the Club “Factory” (Fabryka Klub, Zabłocie 23). A place that attracts hundreds of square meters, the place where great concerts take place (especially for the fans of electronic music), which, thanks to very good acoustics remain in the memory very long. Here take place a very bold and brave show (for example now – the Human Body). MOCAK, Schindler's factory, post-industrial spaces at Zabłocie district, or Factories are only selective Zabłocie industrial facilities. Currently on the Vistula huge complex – Cricoteka is created and built, this place maintained the convention of raw building activities will commemorate the famous Cracow director Tadeusz Kantor.

The master plan prepared by the socialist city Tadeusz Ptaszycki was announced almost simultaneously with the obituary of Joseph Stalin. Nowa Huta was built between 19531956. One of the biggest and best (whatever!) souvenirs of socialist realism in Nowa Huta, which is representative for post-industrial space tinning is chemical plant at the Ujastek Street. There are concerts of world music's biggest stars, for example during the festival Sacrum Profanum in the September. The hall is an excellent context for the music performed by the band representing the frontier of electronic and alternative music.
Unveiled in 2010 the footbridge Kładka Bernatka that connects the foothills of Kazimierz, has contributed to the revival of tourism in Zabłocie, which divides Kazimierz just a 20-minute, pleasant walk, in search of new space and discovering the fantastic spirit of Cracow industry.
Nowa Huta steelworks was for over half a century, the most important industrial plant in district. The discussion about the need to build a new, powerful conglomerate began shortly after World War II. ASIA BUCIOR Freedom. A kind of feeling that all cyclists know very well. Despite you keep on touching the ground, two wheels and the strength of your muscles will take you straight up in the air. Don’t have your own bike here? Don’t worry, you will find below some useful information how to get one in Cracow.
Rentals Starting from the beginning of April till late October there are many biking points open, where you can rent a cycle for a ride. In that case you should know some basic rules that need to be followed in those places. First of all, you pay in advance (3035 PLN per day). Don’t be surprised when service asks you for a deposit (about 200 PLN) or charges extra for a bike refitting such as luggage carrier or a basket. Remember, if you take the sport equipment for more days you should definitely negotiate a price. Your friends accompany you? Ask for a discount! They usually offer a bargain price for a group which is taking five and more cycles. Don’t forget to bring your ID. It can be a passport or a driving license. The last but not least – “rent for a day” means almost always working hours of a biking point f.e. from 9am till 10pm, not round the clock.

Self-service rental Just as Paris and Barcelona, Cracow offers for its guests an automated bike rental service called BikeOne. Three-speed city bicycles wait for users at 16 stands around downtown. Before sitting on characteristic dark blue vehicle, you have to register online at www.bikeone.pl. Unfortunately, service has only polish interface. If beautiful Slavic dialect stop being a problem, you should prepare your credit card. First of all it is necessary to deposit 20 PLN, then pay at least the weekly subscription worth 15 PLN. The good news is that the first half an hour of every rental is free of charge while the next 30 minutes cost 2 PLN (60 min – 3 PLN, every next hour – 4 PLN). Now you can hit the road! Find a stand on a map and return the two-wheeler to another station. Watch your vehicle carefully! The loss of a rented BikeOne will cost you 1.600 PLN.

1. Błonia park
The most popular running spot in Cracow just had to be on our list. Situated right next to the historic centre of the city Błonia park tends to get really crowded in the summer, but in spring it makes a great place to lose some weight we had probably gained during the winter. This route not only has an optimum distance to begin our training with (one circuit around Błonia has about 3.5 km), but if you get tired you may quickly hop into one of the pubs in the Old Town to enjoy a refreshing drink. You know, some scientists claim that a pint of beer after workout is better than water…
2. Vistula river bank
Not only it’s a must-see during your visit in Cracow, but it’s also one of the best spots to jog. Especially in the morning! Fantastic views, broad concrete pathway and a lot of flexibility in choosing a perfect distance for yourself. Our suggestion is to start near the Wawel castle, run all the way to the Salwator district, cross the Vistula river through Zwierzynecki Bridge, head in the direction of Wawel, pass it, cross the river again at the beautiful Kładka Ojca Bernadka in order to make a final push and make it to the starting point. The whole route has about 9 km, but we may modify it any way we want. And we’ll be close to the city centre nearly all the time!

3. Zakrzówek and the nearby park
If you want to go a little bit further away from the centre to avoid the crowd and concrete surroundings you should consider the Zakrzówek lake. It’s proximity to the city centre (just around 10 stops using the public transport) makes it really an accessible location. Route around the lake is scenic, and even though it’s quite tiring, the views will make up for every extra drop of sweat. Especially in spring when the whole area becomes green. Just check it!
4. Lasek Wolski or Rudawa River If you’re already in good shape and want to run away from the crowd, we might give you a hint on how to do it. Literally. Take Błonia park as a starting point and run along a narrow Rudawa river. The route is very long, picturesque and the river bank surroundings will make you feel like you are in the countryside. If you want to check out an even more remote area or you’re into long distance running, just get to Las Wolski (about 6km from the Błonia Park) which is a forest suitable for long training. Due to its size you shouldn’t be afraid that you’ll encounter any strollers. Nice views, nature, ahhh!
5. Up to Kopiec Kościuszki
Finally, let’s get a little Rocky-like. Just run up and down the stairs of the shopping mall and… just kidding! To enjoy a panoramic view of the Vistula River and the city, you’ll have to run up to the Kościuszko Mound - great place with great views of the entire Cracow. It might be a bit tiresome to get all the way to the top, but running back will be a piece of cake later on. Mound is situated about 3 km from the Wawel castle, so we’ll suggest to make it your starting point. DANIEL JOCHEMKO

If you decide to visit Cracow in early spring, you will be able to see how winter ends preparing a place for spring and everything that it brings with it. It`s not hard to see the exact moment of what I`m writing about. Everything starts with grand opening of the cafeterias and it`s gardens all around Market Square.
Even the biggest fans of winter sports are usually tired if the winter last too long. Carrying heavy, warm clothes is much too tiring for more than two or three months. Everyone starts daydreaming about sunbathing with cold drink in his hand. Sometimes we`re so lucky that we manage to avoid mud that appears when the winter descends and the spring is getting born. Nevertheless usually we need to slip from one time of the year to another and it`s usually taking some time to adopt. One day after another is getting longer. We can supplement the shortage of sunshine which tired us through the winter. But what is the clearest evidence that the spring really came to our town? Of course – cafeteria`s gardens all around market square. At first they timidly begin to show up here and then till the moment when the sun start to shine significantly. It`s the real beginning of spring in Cracow and start of the warm season for tourists in this town. The warmer it is outside the more likely you`d like to stop by for something cold to drink. Of course – at the beginning of spring people are wearing jackets and warm sweaters but even though they willingly drop by for a beer or some tea. The presence of these gardens gives you the joy of the coming spring and summer and it`s the first symptom of these.

KEBAB How is it possible, that every time when entering a new city, you desperately look for a kebab stand or somehow end up at McDonald’s? Let us please change that habit. When it comes to polish cuisine there is nothing to be scared about. Pierogi
They are probably the most popular Polish delicacies among foreigners. Some places call them filled dumplings or ravioli but neither of those terms reveal the whole truth about pierogi. In search of this meal, please look for crescent-shaped noodles made of pastry. They can be served fried (smażone) or boiled (gotowane) and filled with varied, tasty fillings. The first kind on your “must-try list” should be Ruskie (Russian), stuffed with potatoes, onion and cottage cheese. Vegetarians can try pierogi with Kapusta (with cabbage) and Z Grzybami (with mushrooms). There is a perfect choice for meat-lovers as well, namely Z Mięsem (with meat), usually filled with beef or pork and onion. Those who crave something sweet, should definitely try Pierogi Z Serem (with cottage cheese, sugar and raisins) or Z Owocami (with fruits). Ingredients of the last sort depend on the season. If you are lucky enough to stay in Cracow for the summer, do not hesitate and taste ZTruskawkami (with fresh strawberries) or Z Borówkami (with blueberries). The sweet version, covered usually with a dollop of cream (sometimes whipped), is just perfect for dessert. Remember, you can find pierogi almost in every restaurant and bar menu. Price 3 - 25 PLN for one portion (6-8 pierogi)

Barszcz There is a little misunderstanding about the rights to this meal between Ukrainians, Russians and Poles. Of course, according to our sources, the Polish version is the best; but you must understand, we can be a bit biased. Traditional Barszcz is prepared from beetroots and meat stock. The consistency of soup depends on how many other vegetables are included, you can either drink it or eat with some extra meal. It is usually served with specific pierogi called Uszka (literally “ears”) or Z Krokietem (with a croquette). That last mysteriously sounding name is basically a thin rolled pancake stuffed either with mushrooms, meat, cabbage, sauerkraut or a mix of those ingredients, covered in breadcrumbs and fried. Price 8 - 20 PLN
Schabowy Let me introduce you to the king among all Polish main courses – Mr. Schabowy. All true Slavic machos will surely confirm that this variation of pork chops goes best with potatoes and special cabbage, fried with onion and bacon. It’s a safe order for those who don’t want any risk. Just forget about counting calories! Schabowy may be accompanied by a glass of beer. Price 10- 40 PLN

Have you ever tried American hash browns? Polish potato pancakes are quite similar. Chefs prepare them out of grated potatoes, flour, eggs and onion or garlic. Placki ziemniaczane may be topped with many condiments such as sour cream or melted oscypek (smoked cheese prepared from sheep milk). As a fan of this meal, I can definitely recommend the goulash option, known also as Po Wegiersku (Hungarian style).Price 6 - 35 PLN
Maybe our food is not so popular as Italian or as sophisticated as French cuisine. However, there are lots of exquisite dishes, that even choosy gourmets will appreciate after trying them out. Have a quick rundown below and explore Polish tastes bravely! 21
Żurek In the land of the Wisła river, Żurek is something more than just soup – it’s an institution. A typical bowl of Żurek means a soup based on sour rye with at least one boiled egg and a large piece of white kiełbasa (sausage). Sometimes it’s served in a bread loaf, which makes the meal an even more unique experience. You just have to check it out! Price 3 - 15 PLN

Tastes of Cracow Since you have the great opportunity to discover the beauty of Cracow, let’s have a brief look on local tidbits that can’t be missed on your road! Is it high time for lunch? Head your steps toward the Jewish district called Kazimierz. Once you get to Plac Nowy, you will notice the pavilion with little bars in the middle of the square. They all sell Zapiekanka, a halved baguette famous for its quality of bread and many, many flavours to choose from. The base is topped off with mushrooms, tomatoes and cheese – the rest is your decision. From Hawaiian (with pineapple and barbecue sauce) and Diablo (extra spicy) to Greek (olives, feta cheese, mixed vegetables), and Gypsy (ham, sweet and sour sauce) - you can have it all! From this point there is just a couple of minutes to Hala Targowa, where all meat-eaters can buy sausages sold out of a blue van called Nyska. Remember to get there between 8pm – 3am … Smacznego!

Easter holidays mark the end of the 40 day Lent - a time of intensified prayers in Catholic religion and also the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The last week of Lent is called the Holy Week. It contains the most rites and ceremonies. Easter Holidays are moveable. It has been agreed that the first Sunday after the Paschal full moon (after March 21st) is Easter Sunday. The Holy week is the most important week but many people start feeling the holidays from Thursday not Monday, and that is where we’ll start as well.
MAUNDY THURSDAY Commemorates the Final Supper of Jesus Christ and the Apostles. The Mass of The Lord’s Supper initiates the Easter Triduum. It is normally celebrated late in the evening with a homily in church around 6 pm. This day also celebrates the creation of the following sacraments: Priesthood and Eucharist.
GOOD FRIDAY The most important day of the Easter Triduum. Commemorates the death of Jesus Christ on the cross. In catholic beliefs it is a fast day, which means you can only have one full meal and two small ones during the day. Eating meat is strictly forbidden. There is no mass on this day, no music is played, no bells are rung. Faithful gather in church for the Celebration of The Passion of The Lord, which consists of three parts: Liturgy of the Word, Veneration of the Cross, and Holy Communion. After that, faithful participate in a joint Way of the Cross. Afterwards families prepare for Holy Saturday by boiling eggs, which children color. Then the Easter Basket is decorated.

HOLY SATURDAY It is the day before Easter and the day after Good Friday. The last day of the Holy Week which commemorates the day that Jesus Christ’s body laid in the tomb. On the morning of this day, children and their parents go to church to “Bless their Easter Baskets”, the so-called Święconka, the most enduring and beloved Polish tradition. Easter baskets are filled with painted Easter eggs, which symbolize new life, a chocolate or glace covered lamb, which stands for the resurrection of Jesus Christ. You can find salt, which protects food from spoiling, horseradish, bread, ham, sausages, an orange or other fruit, and yeast cake. All that is covered by a white cloth, pinned to the basket by boxwood. Later on in the evening people go to church. During the service the most important part is lighting a new Paschal candle and the blessing of fire and water.
EASTER SUNDAY The day of Jesus Christ’s resurrection, the so-called Resurrection Sunday. In Polish tradition people go to church at 6 am. to celebrate it. Afterwards entire families gather and eat a joint breakfast, which consists of food from the Easter Basket that was blessed the previous day in church. Easter Sunday is the most important holiday in Poland.
EASTER MONDAY Very anticipated by children and teenagers but feared by adults. In Roman Catholic countries such as Poland people douse each other with water. Initially by holy water, which was taken from the church the previous day during mass. It was supposed to cleanse and purify a person. Nowadays, its regular tap water - usually very cold. In some regions of Poland there is also a tradition of striking girls’ legs with willow branches. In Cracow however, you can only witness people pouring water on one another. With much of Cracow’s population residing in tall apartment buildings it is quite popular for young people to gleefully empty buckets of water, or water balloons on pedestrians walking below. So either avoid those places or carry an umbrella with you, which will at least protect you from water pouring down at you. You still have to deal with those who surprise you from the back and splash you.

You want to travel by urban means of transport and see the city from a slightly different side – passing it through. You get on the tram and….there it is: crowd of people, no sitting place and no ticket… what now?

Tickets
KSENIA ŚLĘZAK
You can buy them in paper shops (called kiosks) all over the city or in every bus or tram in a ticket machine. You just have to choose the right kind of ticket. They are divided into two groups: the centre of Cracow and the first zone, which consists of the suburban areas of the city. In these places you can travel with no worries, but only with the following tickets:
TICKET FOR 3,80 PLN
For adults, for one ride in one vehicle no matter how long you are travelling or you can travel in as many buses or trams you’d like but only for 40 minutes.
TICKET FOR 2,80 PLN
For adults, a 20 minute ride in all means of transportation.
TICKET FOR 1,90 PLN
For retirees, children, and students with a valid student card or Euro Student Card. This ticket is valid for one ride in one vehicle, no matter how long it takes or for 40 minutes total in various buses and trams.
TICKET FOR 1,40 PLN
It’s also for retirees, children, and students with a valid student card or Euro Student Card. With this ticket you can travel for 20 minutes by many trams and buses. Tickets from the second group are those that you validate outside of the city, but they are mostly aimed at citizens living on the outskirts of Cracow. You should know that if there is no ticket machine or kiosk you can also buy tickets at the tram/bus driver but only by the exact amount of money. Remember that they are not allowed to give you change nor accept more than the ticket price!
Party vehicles
Urban means of transport can be rented for parties, different kinds of events and conferences. Vehicles can be hired for at least 3 hours, which is driving about 54 kilometers. Price depends on the kind of bus or tram. The rule: the more historic the device, the more expensive the rent in this case.
Those interesting kind of parties are more and more common in Cracow, but not many people know that their history began in the 1980s. It all started when vehicles were rented to transport children to the cinema, theatre or during trips. Right now, we can differentiate four main reasons for renting buses or trams. Those are:
1. Weddings and receptions.
Newlyweds hire a bus for their guests while the bride and groom are being driven to church by a historic machine.
2. Parties.
It is the domain of students (especially Erasmus) who rent a vehicle to organize a driving fete. Specially accommodated carriages can be hired and they ride in Cracow. These devices do not stop to take citizens on bus/ tram stops. The party is open only for people who rented the machine and those invited.
3. Time vehicle.
During spring and summer you can sightsee Cracow from the historic bus or tram built in 1912. There are three different routes you can choose from. The first one is in the heart of the city. Travelers tour the Old Town. The second option is Kazimierz – an area where two contrasting cultures, Jewish and Christian, met. The last option is connected with Nowa Huta and the socialist realism. 4. The last but not least
group consists of hotheads of communication. They rent a machine and drive in it all over the city. During this ‘trip’ they take photos with the bus/ tram in the background. The whole party ends up with grilling sausages on the depot.

Wanda
Mound as a proof that you`re not able to force somebody to love you.

Everybody know that emotions are not easy to handle. Once you fall in love, you`re lost. And on the other hand – if someone tries to buy your affection, someone may suffer defeat. That`s the beauty of it – it`s totally unpredictable. Have you heard about princess Wanda, who didn`t want to marry Rydygier, German prince? That`s the good example of what I mean. Mound is a popular monument in Poland. Wanda Mound is a witness of tragedy which consists of love, politics and sacrifice. Princess Wanda, as we can guess, was an extraordinary beauty. So it`s not surprising that prince Rydygier lost himself in affection. Probably he sent her few bouquets of roses or chocolates. If you`re a prince, you have enough money to attracts women. Guess what? It didn`t work at all. Wanda rejected him. There was no chemistry obviously. The situation was not easy. If she married him, he would be a king of Poland. This was not the best solution to our country. Besides, she didn`t love him so breaking his heart came to her with ease. Chillout – like someone will say nowadays. You couldn’t be more wrong about it. German prince was totally pissed off. Pride took over his sense and he decide to invade Polish lands in revenge. He felt insulted. He loved the girl and she dumped him. What else could he do? But Wanda was not only lovely, but she had also a gift of persuasion. He resigned and canceled the invasion. He felt humiliated so he decided to kill himself. And that`s what he did. But there are no winners in this story. Wanda saved her land from the occupation and didn`t marry the man she didn`t have crush on.
But on the other hand she felt like she owe something to the gods. In that way she had to make a sacrifice. Properly big one. I know! I drown myself in Vistula river – that`s what she could thought. Princess Wanda decided to end up his life in the glory of gods who avoid her from marrying wrong man. And saved her fatherland, of course. To celebrate the heroism of the princess, her mound was built by her people. The mound is located close to the spot on the river bank where her body was found. In 1890, a monument was placed on the mound. It was designed by Jan Matejko himself. And that`s the testimony of the another sad no- love story.
